I'm just gonna say one thing: YOU GOTTA ATTEND EVERY LECTURE. His exams are 100% lecture-based. Some of the questions on his exams are completely irrelevant to the textbook. Also, he gives 4 popquizzes that are worth 5% each, total 20%. 2 midterms are 25% each, us
The course material is fun and interesting. His lecture is good and clear. But the midterm is a total nightmare, 70-90% of MT question is from lecture,MCQ,very tricky, almost like it is designed to make u fail!!It includes those tiny little pieces of detailed information that u thought is not important. U need to record every single words of his le
Good prof, easy to understand, helpful with office hours. However his quizzes/midterms questions( which are all multiple choice), are based off tiny details from his lectures. Attend lectures and take notes if you want to do well.
Really interesting class and instructor but the exams are detail-oriented and awfully challenging. Attending lecture is a must to get a good mark. I would suggest it to other students interested in the brain.
Awesome prof, really makes you enjoy what you're learning. must go to class b/c exams are heavily lecture based and detailed but he makes them interesting and easy to pay attention to. chill prof with good sense of humor but make sure you don't slack off.
This instructor is laidback, but marks hard, strict about deadlines, and creates extremely challenging multiple choice questions for exams. Take detailed notes, go to every class, read the textbook in detail. A lot of work for this course - project was time consuming. He does make material interesting, speaks fast at times. Overall, a nice prof.
Amazingly fun! It's hard not to attend his lectures -he makes everything so interesting. His lectures are crystal-clear, he treats everyone with great respect, finds students interesting, is very motivated to teach, and shows concern for all students. I could just keep taking all of his classes that he teaches. His multiple choice questions are tou
Very interesting, loves to teach. Class is bell curved around 65% average so it won't be easy. Attending class is a must. Gives pop quizzes so you must stay on top of material. Easily my favourite prof at UBC (4th year student).
He's an awsome Prof. I'm in my first year but he's by far the best prof I have. Makes all the material, even the dull ones seem interesting. Shows great examples that aren't based off the textbook but from stuff we might have seen on T.V. He's very respectful and engages students during the in class discussions. Very challenging exams though.
Best prof I've had at UBC without a doubt. He's young but knows his way around a lecture hall really well. Quizzes and midterms are certainly not easy but expectations are clear and fair. If I had him earlier in my time at UBC, I would have considered becoming a Psych major. Great class!
Nice guy but not a great prof. Lecture material was vague and depressing. His slides give you no information whatsoever which is hard for people who are not auditory learners. Exam was really difficult and poster project grading was extremely unfair - I put a lot of work into this course and got a way lower grade than I deserved.
He is a fun and engaging prof who really cares about his students. However, this course is incredibly difficult, and should be not taught at as a 200-level. If I had known what I was getting myself into I probably would not have taken this.
Cool class and good prof. Poster project was fun and useful.
BEST PROF IN UBC!YOU WOULD NEVER BE BORED IN HIS CLASS! Gives pop quizes but are not too hard if you review your slides everyday. Midterms are chanllenging but fair! You just need to really understand the material!!
Great Prof! Incredibly interesting and engaging. Well organized slide notes and If you put forth any effort at all, you will do fairly well.
Great prof! Exams are a murder, but interesting material. His pace is quick but appropriate. He takes teaching seriously and has no sense of humor. This is a critical thinking class, and simply knowing your stuff won't give you an A. Study hard and beyond!
A very enthusiastic prof, knows his stuff, encourages opinions, makes class activities (asks for thoughts, opinions), fun poster project (1st prize winners and runner ups receive prizes), extremely respectful to students, funny, hard exams though (study really hard, and make sure you take down GOOD notes). All in all, a great prof!
BEST PROF I EVER HAD. The class is tough, but it is definitely worth it. Very clear and interesting material. Enjoyed every minute of that class.
Enthusiastic, helpful, clear and knowledgeable prof. Course focuses more on cognitive/bio materials than social aspects of aging. Poster project was educational, however I advise everyone to pay attention to the kinds of posters that HE SAYS HE LIKES when he provides examples. Exams are tricky but fair.
Do not take classes with this professor. The grading system for the poster project is very unfair. Midterms much too difficult, even if you study. Very dissapointed with this prof.
Great prof! I would take his courses in the future. Pop quizzes and exams were challenging but not unreasonable. He has a lot of energy and cares about your success.
Interesting class. He puts his lecture notes on vista but they are more or less a point form of what he wants to talk about during lecture. Very similar to a Bio course. Pop quiz are frustrating and worth wayy too much. You HAVE to attend class, only 30% of the exams is from the textbook and 70% from lectures. Exams are hard, very tricky questions.
Although he speaks clearly, he's quite arrogant and claims he's young, but a harsh professor who makes you go to class and does not give detailed notes, marks unfairly, unrealistic exams, project clear waste of time. Be prepared to study as though it's a 9 cr course. You WILL regret taking his course. Don't be misled by earlier comments.
BEST PROF IN UBC!!!!!!!!!!!!Class is super interesting, fun and encouraging. You learn a lot in this class! Pop quizzes are challenging but fair and actually helps boost up my mark! Exams are hard but if you study hard and go to his office hours you will do GREAT!! TAKE HIS CLASS YOU DO NOT WANNA MISS OUT!
had mixed feelings. he's super cute, smart, funny and articulate. Super tall (he's 6' 8) he told us that himself. He's a VERY good teacher. But his exams and are killer! They're super tough and tricky. Even if you put forth any effort you still won't get an A. pop quizzes worth too much, altho he gave us a freebie 100% for completing a survey.
Very dissapointed with prof. Exams were difficult and poorly written (many trick questions that do not accurately test knowledge and only serve to keep the average low)The poster project grading was very unfair and our group got a very poor mark even though he said we did a great job. Not open to discussing marks, which is a basic right of students.
Class was challenging but the expectations were fair. Poster project was work but Dr. Souza told us the lowest grade was a C-, which was really fair. I earned 2nd place and he got us a nice chocolate bar to say congrats. It was a great experience in all.
Good prof that really wants you to know the material. But his tests are extremely hard, be prepared because they are very tricky.
AMAZING PROF. DON'T COME TO HIS CLASS LOOKING FOR FREEBIES OR EASY As. You'll work your ass off, but getting that A is just so much more worth it. He gives review sessions, negotiable office hours, study tips, but you have to take the initiative and ask him for help. Don't be lazy. Fun fact: He used to work in a casino. ;)
Very interesting prof, fun to listen to and always has stories to share which is good! Happy for him he announced he's having another baby! So far I can't say anything about his difficulty yet, but I can say now don't skip his lectures. Cool guy! :-)
Honestly the best prof I've ever had. That said, this is the hardest course I've ever taken at UBC and I already have my BA. He truly cares, went above and beyond to help me with extra study sessions and even giving advice on grad school. I did poorly in the end despite working the hardest I've ever worked and I'd still say it was worth it.
His exams are a NIGHTMARE. The multiple choice questions are almost worded to ensure you get them incorrect and are completely lecture based. His slides are worthless so if you miss more than one class, it's a wrap.
Best prof I have EVER had!! Went to every lecture because they are so interesting. The hour speeds by! He uses a lot of YouTube videos to illustrate the concepts. Very interesting prof, excellent teacher!!
The class is good. Midterms have short answer and multiple choice and are challenging but fair. He offers lots of extra resources (ex: review sessions) and is genuinely interested in helping his students. I'm glad I am in his class.
Simply amazing. No other professor or teacher can keep me up in a morning class like he does. Extremely engaging and you can just tell he wants his students to do well. Lectures are MANDATORY! If you don't go you have to get notes from a friend or you're screwed. Thank you Dr. Souza, congratulations on the twins!
EXCELLENT! No other prof makes me NOT want to miss lecture.Attendence is MANDATORY! Make sure you take very good notes as most of his test questions are from lecture. Very engaging and makes you more interested in the subject. Don't take this course if you want an easy mark. Go to his office hours he might give you hints of what's on the midterms;)
I didn't think "Adulthood and Aging" could be a very interesting course but Dr. Souza made it interesting!! There is a poster presentation he tells you what he's looking for to get that A. midterm is fair make sure you don't underestimate it. lecture is mandatory as most of his test questions comes from lecture cummulative final
Best psyc prof at UBC. He's a young guy just starting out so he's got all kinds of energy and passion. I never missed any of his lectures because they were just too fun/interesting. One time, we had a random class discussion about dreams that ended up with me sharing one of my weird dreams with the entire class...
AMAZING PROF!!! Very passionate about this class and about the welfare of his students.Definitely the best prof. I've had in UBC (he's going to be hard to top). His exams are killer so if you are looking for an easy A enroll in another class.
His exams are way more difficult than they need to be. He acknowledges this but ultimately doesn't change anything and then ends up needing to scale the average up by a lot. And it's been said before: miss more than a couple classes and you may as well withdraw.
I have never had such a fun class! He is always willing to clarify and he really cares for his students. Attendance is mandatory, but I have no idea why anyone would want to skip in the first place. Sure exams are hard, but he always scales so as many people as possible get A's & he bumps people if he thinks they deserve it. The best prof EVER!
I really enjoyed this class. Getting an A is no easy task but he's very fair with grading. Class is interesting and surprisingly relevant to so many things in real life.
One of the BEST prof i ever had!! Yes, the exams are hard, but he really cares about the students and will be willing to change things around. His lectures are super interesting and he makes the material very clear. He's full of energy and very passionate about the course! I really enjoyed his class :)
Nice, funny guy. Tests are tough. Weird marking scheme - 8 marks for a 2 line answer, MC worth 2.5 pts each. You MUST attend class! Goes thru slides pretty quick so pay attention! Text is supplementary. I wish he would have allowed 3 bonus credits instead of 2. Ran helpful review sessions before exams. Got a C+ in the course - my lowest mark at UBCr
He is very engaging and his lectures are interesting. But this class is definitely not a gpa booster, more like a gpa killer. Don't take this class if you don't want a poster project and a cumulative final. Also, yes I have to agree with the terrible marking scheme. If you want to do well, work really really hard.
Best prof i've had at UBC! really cares about his students and wants them to do well. Exams are hard but he's not out to trick you, if you take good notes and go to every class you will be in a good position to do well! highly recommend this course!
Passionate, engaging, helpful, and genuinely cares about TEACHING. Awesome class, great guy, TAKE PSYCH WITH SOUZA!
Passionate teacher. Difficult exams!
pay attention in class, study, study, study...
Now this is what I call a top-notch instructor! Crystal clear lectures that are always interesting and engaging. He uses a lot of examples that make difficult concepts easy to understand. Attendance is mandatory because lecture slides are in point form. Exams are mostly based on lectures, but nothing unreasonable. Nice and funny prof.
Best prof I've ever had! Exams obviously have to be tough, but he is really, really fair & scales so the max # people get A's. He answers questions so well, and he is extremely passionate about his subject. After taking his class I am considering switching to a psych major.
fun class and good instructor
Crystal-clear lectures and cares deeply about student learning. I was not a psych major and wasn't used to the learning style, so I did quite poorly overall, but the class distribution clustered at the higher end. A voice recorder would help to capture small details since he often tests on details.
Awesome prof! Best ever!
Hard test but really good prof. Really enjoys what he teaches and isn't too bad to look at either.
UBC needs to hire more profs like Dr. Souza, deeply cares about student learning & is very passionate about teaching. If you attend all lectures & take cohesive & detailed notes - and MEMORIZE ALL OF IT you will find his midterms very fair. But if you don't put your work in, don't expect a very high mark for this class at all.
Excellent professor, very clear lectures, clear expectations and very detail oriented (literally... every little thing counts when studying!) His love for teaching the material is infectious, makes every non-psyc major want to become a psyc major... BUT! his midterms are no walk in the park, you need to study hard and stay on top of material!
Very personable prof. He clearly loves what he does and what he teachers, and his enthusiasm translates into his lectures. Midterms were a bit tough, but if you studied you should be fine. He clearly wants his students to understand the material and is very helpful at office hours and pre-exam review sessions.
Really passionate and knows his stuff. Funny and helpful. Exams kind of hard. Take his class!
Best prof at UBC.
Wow I came in thinking this class would be easy and boy was I wrong! The exams are very hard, you definitely have to always be reading and re-reading to stay on top of things. The poster project was a huuuuge disaster, he was very unfair in the way he marked them, and he gave very vague instructions as to what he wanted. I wouldn't take this class.
This guys lectures are the type of lectures that other professors should be judged against. You won't find many others as passionate as he is about his field. Best prof at UBC!
Best prof at UBC, his passion for teaching and psychology has yet to be rivaled. Highly recommended to anyone willing to put in a bit of extra work for an incredible class.
Dr. Souza is an incredibly dynamic and knowledgeable prof. His teaching methods are extremely effective and his lectures and sense of humour made the potentially dry material of first year psych interesting and enjoyable. He was very approachable and helpful. Best psych prof I've had, really recommend him. Souza rocks!
The best prof I've had at UBC, so far. His lectures should be the bar to beat for all the other ones. Even the old ones that get lazy with tenure. Exams are tricky as hell. He will squeeze all he wants to know out of you from here. He is a great, approachable and clear prof. Taking this class wouldn't be a mistake, but, be prepared for his tests.
amazing professor, really clear lectures, uses media well to illustrate concepts, encourages class discussion (not just talking at you)
Need to attend class to get notes since posted are only an outline. Exams are tricky, never had a prof that used none of the above for every single MC Q since Michael. Don't ask stupid Q;s on discussion board since he won't bother answering
Amazing professor - dedicated, loves his job... Exams are HARD. This won't be an easy class but I guarantee you'll learn more than any other professor.
Very nice prof, interesting lecturer, catches students attention very well and is clear on presenting class material. However, his exams are painfully hard.... to do well, you must attend class and take GOOD notes (this is very important as his exams are mostly lecture based), and read the textbook atleast once. Good luck.
Souza is an incredible prof who uses media and examples to clarify concepts. He is highly engaged professor who truly wants his students to do well. Despite walking away from the 2 midterms and final feeling like I failed them (I didn't, but only managed a C+ overall), I highly recommend him! He is funny, able to answer questions, and energetic.
Awesome professor. He is very passionate about the subject matter and he makes lectures very interesting. Very friendly and approachable, also.
Dr. Souza is an amazing and incredible prof. His lectures made me get excited about going to class. You learn so much and he's really into getting you to understand and not get bored. I'm signing up to have more courses with him since he was so amazing. Exams are tricky, almost impossible to pass if you don't go to class so don't miss any!
The best!!! If you want to become interested in neuroscience, take this course. Superb lecturer who was at no point boring, difficult exams (but completely fair).
great guy, great prof. interesting to listen to. some of the most difficult exams i've ever written. and a strange and unfair grading system. intersting course, but only take it if you are willing to work hard and are okay with being dissapointed in your mark.
His lectures are great and keep you engaged, but he gives minimal notes on the overhead and tends to talk very fast so it can be a pain trying to jot every important point down.
The best prof !!!!
Fabulous prof. I've never seen anyone put so much effort into their students. Lecture is always interesting and completely necessary to attend. His exams are certainly the hardest I've ever written but always fair. Don't bother too much with the textbook or his slides but do take detailed notes and a voice recorder.
Well, I have to agree with the majority of posters here. Dr. Souza is an interesting, engaging lecturer who devises very difficult tests! Just took the 1st midterm: multiple questions. Will dutifully march over to the psych office to see where I went wrong. And then decide if I am better suited to basket Weaving 101. (Seriously, I love the course).
the best! :)
Take notes in his class! He often reveals some key testable information that's often not explained in the textbook. His midterms are ambiguous multiple choice questions but if you pay attention you'll be fine. He's a very engaging professor so paying attention is never a problem! He also tends to end class early.
BEST PROF IVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. Majoring in psyc because of him.
I've had several classes with him now and despite a rocky start, really love his teaching. He goes at a million miles an hour so KEEP UP WITH YOUR NOTES OR YOU WILL FAIL. Killer tests, super hard. But he's passionate and you will learn more than any other UBC Psych course, guaranteed. Very easy to approach and ask questions as well, really cares.
I did not think perfection existed, even less did I think a professor could be perfect... That is, until I took Psych 101 with Dr Souza. He is hands down the best professor I have ever had. By talking slowly, emphasizing important points and always staying on point he made every class worthwhile.
He is a very good professor, and the lectures were very interesting.
awesome prof
This man is the epitome of awesome. I have taken both PSYC 101 and 207 with him, and he never disappoints in his lectures. Not only does he generate interest through very challenging questions, but he invites participation in class, leading to very exciting talks about brain anatomy. He is down-to-earth and truly cares about student learning.
Lectures are very interesting and "fun". Genuinely cares for students and will make sure everyone has their questions answered. He recognizes/ remembers students outside of class (and he has 200+ students each class), which says a lot about how much he cares. If you pay attention in his class (which is easy to do), you'll do fine
a really patient and clear prof
Dr. Souza is the best psychology professor I've ever had! The material could've been dry and boring, but his lectures are very engaging and interesting. His midterms are tricky, but as long as you attend class and take good notes you should be fine. I think everyone, psych major or not, would enjoy his classes.
Hands down my favourite professor at UBC. He knows his material and lives for teaching and that is hard to find in a professor. Although his tests and assessments are very difficult, he genuinely cares about all of his students and the subject matter. Already can't wait for my next class with him
Best teacher I have ever had!! I went in feeling pretty neutral about neuropsych and finished this course totally inspired!! My only complaint is that his tests are purely multiple choice. Regardless, he is an amazing prof and his classes are worth taking even if you are not a psych major.
Really enthusiastic and dedicated professor. His exams are very difficult however, and the textbook readings are definitely mandatory. Definitely attend class, he uses a lot of particular lecture material as well. Write down EVERYTHING he says. Great guy, really cares about the students and is passionate about Psychology. Especially exec functions!
He explains well, and is very helpful if you ask for help. The only problem is that he doesn't give any questions for homework or anything, so you go into an exam not having rehearsed how to answer the questions at all.
Dr. Souza was hands down my best professor this semester. Like many have already said, he keeps every lecture exciting and interesting. He definitely puts a positive spin on what could easily be a boring/repetitive topic. If I was majoring or minoring in psychology, I would definitely enroll in more of his classes. Lecture attendance is important!
His lectures were always interesting. One thing though, despite saying that he will focus on the lectures there are often textbook-specific questions on the midterms.
An amazing lecturer, he speaks clearly and at a pace students can keep up with. His lectures are fun and he relates material to real world examples/people from his own life. Exams are 80% lecture and 20% textbook, so go to lecture and pay attention and you'll do well in the course.
Do not be fooled! This is an extremely hard 200-level course. However, he is an absolutely outstanding prof who will make sure you succeed if you let him! The course has no pre-reqs and I think everyone should have a chance to experience him as their professor! Take the course!
Dr. Souza is fabulous! One of the best psychology teachers at UBC. He really likes teaching and cares about his students. His lectures are interesting and entertaining. I recommend him highly. I wish there were more like him at UBC.
Souza is a terrific prof. Interesting material, but don't be fooled: his exams are a major punch to the gut -- especially the multiple choice. Make sure you have your knowledge of methods really solidified for short answer sections: he loves to use the 'design a study' type questions. He runs a lot of stuff for students in the dept too -- check it!
Took this course in the summer for some arts electives. Souza is an amazing prof! He uses engaging videos along with the concept and always uses related examples from his own life. He says that the exams are most lecture based than textbook but don't be surprised if he pulls some super detailed textbook questions.
Best prof I've ever had. Engaging lectures, good sense of humor/music, very knowledgeable (answered 95% of questions). Exams are difficult, designed to make students *really think*- not the typical memorizing of text..there was no textbook. He provided relevant articles to read + saved me time and $200. Hard to get an A but learned a TON. LOVE HIM.
Dr. Souza is one of the best prof's I've had at UBC. He will make classes fun, interesting, and clear while using real-life experiences. Amazing class!
Dr. Souza is simply amazing!
I had him for my psyc 309A. he is amazing person + prof but seriously his exams are EXTREME HARD!! He mentions that he's role as a professor is to challenge his students to think outside from the box!! His exams are not from the textbook, mostly from lectures about (70%) on top of that you MUST think outside of the box for all of his exams!
He's a good lecturer but his exams are impossible. If you're planning to take PSYC 101, just take it with another prof. You will learn the same material and not have to deal with impossible exams like Souza's. The class average for midterm was 59% and the final consisted of materials skipped over in lecture and not consisted of in textbook.
Exceptional lecturer and truly passionate about psychology! The tests were tricky, but totally manageable if you've stayed on top of the reading. Definitely write down what he says, even if it's not on slides. Best prof I've had at UBC, definitely worth the tough exams.
Overall a very engaging and passionate professor! Definitely a lecture you can ACTUALLY pay attention to. Make sure you attend lecture though because his powerpoint slides are incredibly unhelpful (point form and uses just "one word" to represent very in depth concepts). His multiple choice exams are very tricky and ambiguous! So be warned!
Great prof if you are in university to learn and attend class. He makes sure his students understand every concept and will take his time to explain things further. Letures are well organized and easy to follow. Exams are not the easiest (who should they be?) but if you do what is expected of you as a student (attend class/study) you will do well.
He doesn't use a textbook for this course so if you go to class he gives you everything you need to do well! Reading was generally really light, just some articles. MC is hard on the exams but the written seemed easy if you understand the topics he's covering. Don't skip the guest lectures, he always asks at least one of the SA questions from them
Dr. Souza is the best prof I've had at UBC. His lectures were very interesting and engaging, and he was very willing to help if students outside of class. Exams can be a little challenging though..
AWESOME PROF! Lectures are exciting and interesting, makes you look forward to the next class. Tests are really hard though as in lots of questions that really test your knowledge (almost impossible to guess answers! Study hard, and you'll really enjoy his class!
Passionate, interesting and funny. Sincerely cares about students' wellbeing. Lectures are extremely interesting. Hard exams though.
Great lecturer, but talks very fast and you can't afford to miss a single sentence of his explanations. Difficult for non-majors to understand, but overall good. Hard exams, especially MC. Explains concepts, but you would have to figure out their interconnectedness on your own. Answers questions with questions. Very busy office hours.
amazing prof! his lectures are very interesting and informative but his lectures are challenging :)
Fantastic prof, he makes everything interesting, even for someone who doesn't have psych as a major. I highly recommend him, and suggest that you figure out your study style before entering his class. He's very helpful and will offer excellent study skills. He may raise your final grade if he sees improvement in your final versus your midterms.Gguy
I really expected to enjoy this course but Souza's convoluted testing always got in the way. I still enjoyed the lectures, no doubt he is a great orator. However, as a teacher of psychology, he leaves a lot to be desired. Definitely overrated.
He is an inspirational, engaging and talented professor. Be prepared to study a lot, because his exam questions are carefully devised to test multiple topics at once. His lectures are very interesting so make sure to attend them.
Absolutely excellent professor. Lectures are mandatory but super interesting: he provides stories from the academic world and his own personal and professional experiences that really show the practical applications of this stuff. Tests are not easy, but you can definitely succeed if you come to class and read the textbook. 9.5/10, would recommend.
Amazing professor AND person, I didn't get such an awesome grade, but it was well worth it. Very engaging and makes the content super exciting and intriguing. If I had to retake all the exams again just to sit in his lectures again, I would.
If you are new to psyc, I would not suggest taking this class, this course will for sure bring your GPA down. I learnt a lot from his lectures and they were definitely entertaining, but his tests are sooo tricky. You will need to understand and memorize every single detail from his lecture and the assigned readings. Trying hard is not hard enough.
His tests are extremely hard. The midterms and the final were brutal. My GPA got destroyed by him. Don't take his class.
Very engaging with the material and made lectures at 8AM worth coming to. Tests were very difficult, but you will succeed if you attend lecture and read the textbook. Really sparked my interest in psychology. I would recommend taking PSYC 101 with him.
Even though the tests are hard, Souza is an amazing prof and makes lectures super interesting! Don't take this class if you're looking for a GPA booster, but if you do take it I suggest using a recorder for lectures.
Super interesting and fun prof. Loved his classes although exams were VERY difficult! Like said before, recording lectures definitely helped. Making mind maps for each unit is also extremely helpful (flashcards too)! Key thing is how things are CONNECTED.
Amazing, amazing prof. Like truly inspiring. His course was one of the highlights of my academic life. But that said, it requires a lot of concentration. If you don't want to work hard, you will get murdered. But if you pay really close attention and take copious notes, he's very clear on his expectations. Brilliant teacher.
I took PSYC 101 as an elective, but thanks to him I am planning to major in it. Great and funny prof and explains concepts clearly. Couple things to note: His exams aren't as hard as everyone makes them out to be as long as you 1) write down EVERYTHING in his lectures in class (aka don't skip class), and 2) READ THE TEXTBOOK.
Dr. Souza is awesome! Passionate about what he teaches and make sure everyone understands the context. Very humorous and I really enjoy his class, although it takes great effort to pass the exam. You have to really understand everything he mentioned in the lecture. He offers score-bump to those who improved in two midterms and final.
Dr. Souza is probably the best psych prof at UBC. I looked forward to attending every lecture and I learnt a lot from him. His midterms and final require reading the textbook and being able to apply information rather than simply memorizing it but i promise taking his course is worth it.
Really great prof but really hard exams. I skipped a few of his classes before the first midterm and nearly failed it. You really need to type out everything he says and not go by the slides alone. He's a fair marker, all multiple choice, but not an easy exam at all. Really cool guy.
BEST PROF EVER! Every lecture is engaging and fun. His stories are so interesting, and he always makes the class laugh. Exams are by no means easy, but are not impossible to do well on as long as you put in some effort reading the textbook and attend lectures. Once you take Souza you will be comparing every psych teacher to him afterwards.
The material and his lectures are very interesting, but his tests were extremely difficult even if you have a great grasp on the material. His exams are based on seemingly unimportant details, or things he didn't talk about much in during class. Overall his exams made what should have been a good course into something frustrating and unenjoyable.
Positives: Souza is by far the best professor I had. Born to teach. His tone, his transitions from slide to slide, his clarity, it's flawless. Negatives: the textbook is almost useless. Just skim over it, and be able to summarize, no need to memorize every fact. He's an extremely tough prof. To do well, attend his lectures with full attention.
I do not usually take Rate my Prof comments too seriously. However, I took my first psyc classes after reading about Souza on here and have loved every minute since. Yes, the midterms and finals, though m/c, are challenging, but fair. Do not let that stop you from taking an amazing class with an amazing prof - 50 minute lectures are far too short!!
PSYCH 365 totally could have been a really dry course, but Dr. Souza makes every lecture very engaging and interesting. It is no exaggeration to say he is the best prof I have had so far at UBC, and you learn SO MUCH in his class. His exams are challenging and involves critical thinking. Straight up regurgitating won't work. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Souza is by far the best prof I've ever had. He is an incredible presenter and makes every lecture interesting. Even though I didn't do great, I'm going to miss studying his material. Take this course!!!!
Souza is an amazing lecturer and I really recommend taking his class. His tests were difficult so make sure you really read the textbook along with studying notes! He'll never remind you but textbook material will appear on midterms and the final! Inspiring teacher and very natural speaker.
Dr. Souza is an amazing prof, one of the best at UBC. He's very passionate about PSYC and I thoroughly enjoyed his class. His midterms are hard, but definitely doable if you pay attention in class and read the textbook. I'm probably going to take another PSYC class just to be in his class again, that's how good he is.
nice guy but hard ass in terms of expectations. Not sure if he is just nice to first years but he expects a lot from his upper level classes.he also pulls questions from out of nowhere for exams. wouldn't recommend him for a summer course prof.
Great class! Dr. Souza is a really great lecturer and is super engaging. Exams are challenging and require you to think and apply what you've learned. Rote memorization is not enough to do well in this course. I've taken three 300-level courses with him (301, 365) and would recommend him for all of them.
Dr. Souza is a great prof but in order to succeed you have go to every class and make sure you have notes on almost everything he mentions and do not forget about textbook material, in order to ace his exams you have to know every shred of material and be able to apply it have fun
Makes lecture interesting, but sometimes talks a little too fast. Take notes! Whatever he says in class is important/testable. Poster project was not marked very fairly for his PSYC 322 class (imo).
Amazing class! Super interesting, no textbook (just journal articles), and super recent material. Exams are difficult because you have to apply what you've learned. Best class of my undergrad career, hands down.
He is interested in the material but comes off kind of arrogant when talking to students. Maybe its just my experience, but he seemed more interested in being impressive or looking esteemed than actually conveying or teaching the underlying principles of the class. I also do not think marking exceptionally hard so marks scale up, is a good policy
Dr. Souza definitely knows how to make lecture material interesting. He is excited about the material, eloquent, and very clear. However, exams are difficult. I found that the best way to get by is to study class notes, and read the textbook a couple of times. Exams are mostly based on lectures, but textbook questions (bolded) definitely come up.
The Psych department takes on way more students the profs can handle, Souza especially. Going to his office hours are a nightmare, and one-on-one time is HARD to get. If you're failing, the likelihood he'll make you a priority is slim to none. He'll cater to you if you do extremely well though. Anyways, good orator, inspiring class, but way to hard
Such a great prof! His lecture slides are clear and efficient, and he is a great speaker. He makes the material easy to understand, but you must attend lectures. Exams can be tough if you are relying on pure memorization because he wants you to synthesize the information, not just regurgitate it. I would definitely take his classes again.
Awesome. Exams are tough, you better study for them. The best professor I've ever had at UBC.
Great class, great prof. Lectures are always clear and engaging. He is always happy to help during office hours. There was no textbook for this class (at least this time). It's all journals; don' fall for the "Just understand it in a broad sense". You need to now a decent bit of the specifics of each study. Attend lectures, and read the journals.
Dr. Souza is a wonderful professor, but has ridiculous multiple-choice tests. It feels like every question is a trick question. I studied very hard, but still found it extremely hard to get above 70% on a test. DO NOT take this course as an "easy" elective, I took it as my elective (Im in eng), and it is probably going to be my worst mark this term
Absolutely inspirational and a great personality. Extremely helpful, and always looking out for the wellbeing of his students, and makes time to connect one on one.
Memorizing is not enough for his exams, you have to understand and apply every concept. However, his lectures are the best I've seen so far. He's engaging and funny. I'd only recommend if you're looking to major in psychology and find the material interesting. Don't take as an "easy elective". And never. ever. miss one of his lectures!
If you read the book and study hard - you'll pass. His exams are based both on lectures and book. Attendance is important.
Dr. Souza is AMAZING. You will not be able to pass any of his courses without attending his lectures. He has very high expectations of his students, and that is reflected in the exams. They are all fair, but they require you to work hard for it. He was extremely helpful every time i went to see him at office hours. Sometimes arrogant, but helpful.
Amazing prof. His tests are tough buts its worth it.
Tests definitely are tough, but he speaks with such passion and really, it's the most inspirational and interesting lectures I've had by far. If you're interested in Psychology, take a course with him at least once.
Souza... What can I say. He is knowledgeable, smart, funny, witty, and clear. I have never felt sleepy when he's the prof.. took 102, 322 and 301 with him. You cannot miss a single lecture--every single concept, side remark, story, and factoid is testable so write fast. He makes students think and not regurgitate! 1010!
Straight forward, you have to work hard if you want to do well in his class. Leave no page unturned (well, be reasonable) in your readings, and go to his lectures. On the other hand, he builds off of what was taught in 101, which made 207 and 301 much easier. Great, fun prof, a little arrogant but very engaging. Challenging but gets you thinking
I registered for this course, ready to suffer (I hated biology in highschool)... but holy, he was amazing. I'm not a psyc major but now all I'm talking to my family about is "brain this..." "brain that...". 8-9am., Mon. Wed. Fri., listening to him while sipping my morning was my favorite recreational activity that term.
Funny guy, interesting content, but TERRIBLE notes - you'd have no idea what to know if you werent in class. MANDATORY ATTENDANCE. MT average could've been much higher if Souza was clear about what was going to be tested. Wasted time studying the content equally but he skipped a lot of it. all lecture based. GPA DROP. slightly arrogant.
Best class ever. Tough but engaging, Dr. Souza is inspirational.
Souza is an amazing lecturer. Class will always be interesting and go by quickly. He explains material very clearly. Must attend all lectures and take good notes as you cannot understand slides on their own. That being said, material is not very difficult to understand. No textbook is a plus! Exams are fair, but be prepared to run out of time.
Course content was good but the grading for the group project was extremely unfair and the expectations were very unclear. also the exams were way out in left field
This was hands-down the best class I have taken at UBC. I work with brain-injured patients and I learned so much from this class. Dr. Souza is amazing, yes his exams are tough but I think you get more out of this class from just listening to him than whatever your grade may end up being. I wish he taught more classes because I would take them all!
Souza is known for two things: being a hard marker and being a fantastic professor. If you're looking to take his classes for an easy mark, don't bother. BUT, if you're looking for an inspirational, intelligent, and funny prof, look no further! The course is so interesting - it helped me chose which area of Psych I want to pursue in grad school.
FANTASTIC prof! He makes PSYC 101 (a typically dry course I've had to take it before at a diff uni) interesting and fun to study! He's super inspirational. Don't be fooled - his tests are difficult - but all MC. Read your textbook & study your notes and you should be fine! Finally, don't miss a class.
Dr. Souza is outstanding. Lectures are clear and informative. Tests are challenging for sure but are fair and reasonable. Guest lecturers, including patients who have sustained a brain injury, were a unique experience that I'm not likely to have in another course. This course is an absolutely must for students interested in neuropsychology.
remember everything
Souza makes you work for every mark you get in the class, but it's 100% worth it. Go to every class, take excellent notes, and make sure you are actively engaging with the material, rote memorization won't get you anywhere. He says you only need to know the "basics" about the readings but that's a lie. Learned so much from this man!
Great lecturer, interesting and engaging. He is available to talk always and makes an effort to listen. Exams are difficult.
Group project outline was very clear. He expects a COHESIVE group presentation. Majority of class complain that the expectations were too high for the presentation but that's just because those groups missed criteria. Received 48% on midterm but 81% on final. He bumped me up to 79% FINAL GRADE. he's very open to grade bumps if you deserve it.
honestly, best lectures, makes you actually wanna learn the material. probs the best prof ive taken in terms of lectures, however, exams are quite hard and not enough time to complete them.
His exam is quite challenge. He told us he will make exam difficult . The average will much lower than you expect. Be careful !!! He will not show any mercy !!
Great lecturer, hilarious guy, and passionate for what he does. Never a monotonous moment. Literally. He can't even pretend to be monotone. Tests are a cinch as long as you study and keep up with the lectures. Questions can be pretty tricky, so read each carefully and ask questions to clarify if you're even slightly unsure- you won't regret it.
DO NOT TAKE ONE OF HIS CLASSED IF YOU ARE A STUDENT ATHLETE. I took his class in the first summer session and had to miss the exam due to a sports event. I gave him the option of writing it early, it being proctored while I was away or writing it late and he told me I had to take it up with advising and was zero help. Good lecturer though.
Good lectures, charismatic professor, funny and very interesting, but his tests are TRICKY. His tests are definitely challenging, and written for the purpose of tricking you. He is a very nice guy, very interesting and is so good at lecturing. It's a dream scenario - Mid term 1, Mid-term 2, Final. So those tests really count for your mark.
Amazing, inspirational, clear and hilarious lecturer. Passionate about what he teaches, and keeps lectures interesting by exposing us to modern research, guest lecturers, etc. Must be interested in the topic because it's a tough class, but if you keep up and pay attention you should be ok!
I love everything about this course. Lectures are clear and easy to follow, extremely fascinating and mind-blowing.I love Souza both as a lecturer and a genuine human being. He is hilarious. I just can't get enough of him being sarcastic. If you follow the lectures, take good notes and read the textbook, you should be good to go.
He is an amazing lecturer and very intelligent. His exams/quizes are hard, but it's doable, and I would rather have an intriguing prof and actually learn something than to have easy exams and boring lectures. I almost failed my first quiz, but once you get used to it, and study of course, you'll start to get better. the TA was terrible though.
Souza is a great lecturer, if PSYC is your field or of interest, I would recommend. He cares about the field and is well educated but still very approachable. Quizzes and tests were hard, takes serious studying to get a good grade, but it is possible. I found that he took too many questions, but maybe the class that I was in was just highly chatty.
He is one of the profs that I will remember after graduation. He is knowledgeable, fun and interesting. His lectures resembled more a TEDX talk than a lecture. His lectures were so interesting, that I was waking up early in the morning in order to get a good seat in the class. As a person he is very chill and relaxed alpha male. TAKE GOOD NOTES!!!
Best professor I have had thus far. To do well in his class you need to pay attention and work hard but achieving an A is 100% possible if you get your full effort.
really got my interested in psych-- he was amazing! It's too bad he's leaving for U of T but hopefully he'll inspire other students just as he inspired me... be ready to work a lot though or you won't pass.
Extremely passion - he is probably one of the best professors I have encountered so far. His tests are very tricky, but they are fair. Take lots of notes in class as they are essential for the midterms/final (75% lecture material, 25% textbook material). Sad that he is moving to U of T or I would have definitely taken another class with him!
Material is always very interesting and he adds anecdotes to ensure there's you can recall it easily. Tests are difficult, his tests are often the 'standard' for hard among UBC students, as they draw on application over pure fact memorization. Still very fair, ask questions for clarification and always attend lectures. DO YOUR HSP CREDITS!
Very passionate about the subject of psychology, and it's easy to see in his lectures. Expect to read about 500 pages of a textbook for this course.
Prof Souza is an AMAZING addition to UofT. I have a social science major but needed to re-take this course for credit. He is by far the best lecturer I have ever had in my undergrad at UofT. He presents material SUPER clearly, even though he's challenging. He always shares opportunities. And TAKE GREAT LECTURE NOTES. It's 95% of the exam.
Great professor, very enthusiastic, and makes classes very entertaining. His lectures were 2.5 hours long but I had no problem paying attention. Exams are challenging, but not at all unfair, very application based and requires you to think instead of just recalling memorized information.
Dr. Souza is the most caring, knowledgable, inspirational professor I've had the opportunity to learn from. Most of his exams are lecture based, with just a few terms pulled from the actual text you read. The amount of variety in terms of material you have to understand is quite dispersed but very interesting. Strongly recommend taking his classes!
3 semesters later... no marks below an A since. If you've ever checked your exam at review sessions, you'd know why people say the class is so "hard". His TA's constantly mark questions that are nigh identical to the answer key as incorrect. I didn't check my first exam; wish I did. Also, he put stuff on the exam he said wouldn't be there.
