Exams can be difficult. Make sure you go to class because he does take attendance. Overall good teacher, very helpful and encouraging :)
Very clear in lectures, easy to take notes from if you're paying attention. I found the tests easy, but others in the class didn't but hey, it is Douglas.
Class is fun, you wanna go, his discussions are real, and he knows what he's talking about. Reading is avg. tests are great, a lot of mult Q. I would encourage any crim students to take him!
first teacher i had at douglas, hes a good teacher too!
mike was a great teacher, i wasn't interested in criminology before taking his class, and now i am! tests are based mainly on lecture, so take good notes! 2 term paper, midterm and final.. nothing too difficult if you study! i didnt read the textbook and i did just fine! overall: AWESOME TEACHER, WOULD DEFINATELY TAKE AGAIN
This man will go out of his way to make sure you are crystal clear on all testable material. Such a great guy; Mike really cares about his students and is probably the best prof I have had in my 2 years at this college. His tests are based on lecture, the text is basically just complimentary tolecture notes, so go to class or you won't do well.
I took my first class crim 1160 with him, and he made the class really interesting! He would get the whole class involved in the discussions, and his notes were so clear! His lectures were so interesting, and you actualy wanted to hear what he had to say!Take this prof, worth it!Im going to take another class with him :D
He is the best teacher ever...I find Crim prof who come from real experience like attorny's are better teachers...lectures fun and interesting...test easy and off notes...you don't need a text or CC and no cases...the best...must take!
this teacher is awesome!
Michael rocks!!!! Best prof ever. Would definetly recommend him. I wish he could teach all my courses. Layed back, lets you eat entire meals in class(well at least he let me). Love him to death!!!
Micheal is an amazing professor. Definetly one of the best. He is fairly easy.. if you pay attention to what he says. Everything he says is important.. he is amazing
first class with him was 1160, very interesting and he knows everything, very pationate about his career. his tests seem hard but you get an awsome mark in the end. make sure you pay attention to the lectures and READ THE BOOK!!! you'll do fine, hes great !!
he was an awesome prof who helped me alot with my paper. he spent time with each student who wanted it going over their term paper to help them get the best possible grade. my fav professor so far!
This is one of those prof's who will change the way you feel about school. He is an AWESOME teacher, so helpful, so understanding and one of the best reasons to join the legal studies program at Douglas College. You will learn so much from him guaranteed :)
Michael is just a awesome person to have as a teacher. He is just amazing. Wonderful person to know, and ask for help. Very friendly, and caring. Extremely recommended. You will love his lectures.
he by far is the best teacher in douglas college! and plus hes very very hot!;) really helpful and sweet.
VERY AWESOME TEACHER!! Gives good class notes (speaks clear and slow so easy to jot down notes). Study from notes and will do fine. One midterm, one paper and one final. Must attend class for participation marks. Would take another class with him anytime.
Sporer was an awesome teacher, very helpful. I LOVED his class and did well in it, I would love to take another class with him in the future, hes amazing.
1 assignment, 1 paper, and 2 tests. very interesting person
Good teacher, took a summer night class so it was boring as hell (not his fault). He probably cared more about his students than any other prof I've had yet. For example he invited anyone that wants to be a lawyer to come see him in office hours for advice or questions (He is currently a practicing lawyer). Fair marker, great person.
he is okay but don't like the course
Great teacher!!! Class was fun, his stories were related to the course so easy to learn. Has got to be one of the best profs at Douglas! Would take his class again!!!
Great Prof! He explains things in detail, so everyone gets what he is trying to say. As long as you go to class and take notes, you are set bc whatever he covers in class is on his exams and what he doesnt cover from text, you dont need to know. Very easy and participation is 10% so showing up gets you a higher grade! I would suggest taking him!
Very understanding, and truly wants to help every student, which is hard to come by. The material would be unbearably dry if it wasn't for his real life experience and witty stories. Would for sure recommend him as an instructor? or lawyer haha
This is, by far, the best prof I've had at DC. He genuinely loves what he does which puts him above other professors. I'll definitely take this prof again! PS - Is it just me, or is Mr. Sporer also dead sexy?
Michael Sporer brings the horror to the court room lol. What can I say he is wonderful, he knows his stuff. "What do you want the court to do, (the remedy),""How do you get there? (the process)," Legal process and remedies. MIKES AWESOME.
The best prof i have ever had. Genuine in his want for you to succeed. Knows his material inside out. Very helpful. His office door is always open. I have never had a prof go out of his way to help me and give me some pointers in other classes and in my crim path. This guy just has a good heart. U want to go his lectures. He is very knowledgeable!
Great prof. Has inspired the hell out of me. Take this prof. if you are willing to challenge conventional wisdom.5/5
Outstanding prof. Very engaging speaker. His work experience makes for some interesting and relevant stories. I can honestly say I looked forward to attending his class. Always available to help during office hours and will encourage you to do well. Tough midterm, easier final. Would recommend.
Very easygoing and clear. Repeats everything twice. Talk to him during his office hours if you have any concerns; he's very approachable. Some of his arguments rely on a somewhat right-leaning political stance, and if you don't favour a Lockean philosophy you may not always agree with him, but he's very open to debate. He wants you to succeed.
He is extremely helpful, and nice.
Michael Sporer is an AMAZING teacher.I love him!!!!!!!!!! He is soooo helpful.
He is the best teacher I have ever had! Easy going, and talks about the law with passion.
So easy going, and he LEARNED RUSSIAN IN UNIVERSITY!He's Intelligent, and a very respected lawyer in Vancouver. flat out said we don't need to read the text. The course was dry, he made it SO interesting. Did I mention he's handsome? would take him again 100%.
Excellent teacher, enjoys what he does and does it well. Recommended.
He's Great and really knows what hes talking about. very helpful when it comes to not understanding.
Mike is an EXCELLENT professor. Would definitely take him again, and recommend him to anyone. He isn't necessarily an "Easy" marker, but if you put effort into your work, you will do good. Always willing to help, or answer questions.
Michael is an amazing teacher. He keeps the classes attention with using interesting examples and is always available to help his students if they're confused about anything.
He is a brilliant teacher! He is also good looking!
You will not find a teacher who cares for his students more than Michael Sporer. Top-notch instructor with a passion for law and teaching it. Many have already said it and they're absolutely right - he wants you to succeed. Extremely well-read. Will definitely miss this teacher once I've moved on.
My favourite prof!
Excellent lecturer. Is able to take a subject that normally would be boring and uses examplesstories and experiences to make it exciting, interesting and easier to grasp the concept. Genuinely appears to enjoy teaching and has a very easy going attitude.
First off, Mike is great. He is extremely knowledgeable, never too quick in lectures, repeats everything twice. He is also extremely patient. For such a busy guy it is amazing how much he is there for you, in person or by email. Only thing is day time assignments for a night course. Some of us are there from 6-9pm because of day time commitments.
Awesome instructor! Michael is the most caring instructor I have ever met. He genuinely wants all his students to succeed and will help you in any way he can. His class is just a lecture, no slides, just him talking. If you take good notes and really focus in class you can get an A for sure. His tests were focused on almost exclusively on lectures.
One of the best profs in Douglas, I'm not even joking. He makes 3 hour lectures interesting and not long. He's really knowledgeable about his field and is willing to help. If you need help on something, he'll try his very best to answer, and his explanation will stick to you.
Best professor at Douglas College. Not only did I get an A+ in his class because I understood everything on the exams but his class really motivated me to continue into law school. If you have an option of Mike or another teacher, choose Mike. I don't know anyone who has something bad to say about him.
Michael is absolutely caring. He goes around the class during breaks and makes conversation with ppl in class. BUT his notes come out from him. You actually have to listen to him in order to pass the test (but he repeats what he says). He talks so monotone, but at times he'll make it interesting. So if you zone out like ME, DONT TAKE HIS CLASS.
He is a super-professor. He makes 3 hour lectures fly by, honest you won't feel it! You do need to take notes because those are the ones you need in order to pass the test. He doesn't use the textbook at all, just quotes some of the cases here and there. He is always open for student to ask for help. His voice is monotone, but he can be funny too
Omg this prof is amazing!!!! I will definitely take him again. His 3 hour lecture flies like 1 minute !!! One of the best!!!
Dr. Sporer is a real gem. He is very caring towards us students and will quickly learn your name. 3 hour lectures passed by so quick! He lectures and sometimes writes down things on the board. Make sure to write down everything that he says and all the cases he gives as examples. Gives great feedback on the paper.
Michael is the best prof in the legal studies/criminology department at Douglas. Very good at teaching, explains in a clear concise manner. Always has time for you, and very caring, encouraging approach to teaching. Any way he can help, he is there for you. His marking is very fair, and never pulls tricks on tests. The best of the best...
Mike is the best professor I have had at Dougie! Lectures can be boring but he tries his best to make them interesting and keep you engaged. Note taking is a must because the exams are based exclusively on lectures. He is also quick with getting marks back and gives constructive feedback.
honestly my favourite prof so caring so knowledgable THE BEST
One of the best instructors I've had. He makes every lecture exciting without the usual powerpoint every other prof use. Always gives excellent advice with assignments and exams. Plus lots of case examples which makes his content easy to understand.
One of the best profs at Douglas. He truly cares about his students, not only in terms of succeeding in his class but also in life. He is more than happy to be a professional reference on your resume. A respected lawyer as a reference is a major plus for any career. Super pro freedom of speech and cautious of government. BEST PROF!
The best Professor I've ever had. Has clear grading criteria. His lectures are clear and concise and uses case studies and examples from his own life to help you understand the content for that day. He makes Law interesting, a special talent in this day of age. No PowerPoint, pure lecture. Never once read my textbook. Widely respected by all profs.
he is the best teacher i admire him. the way of teaching is really good he clears the concepts. always ready to help
Such a great prof! Would definitely take more of his classes.. Our class marks were based purely on 2 tests and a project, but he really prepares you well for the project.. The tests, you are on your own!
second class with him, very intelligent teacher and clear & informative during his lectures. able to ask questions and receive a clear response. taking notes is very crucial in this class as the exams are straight out of the notes.
Your grade is based on one midterm (M/C, T/F, and one short-answer), an in-person "examination for discovery" (which isn't bad if you prepare), and a final (same format as midterm). Exams are simple (we all finished in under an hour). No notes/lectures are posted, so taking down lectures (which are easygoing and straightforward) is vital.
I don't usually rate profs but Michael definitely deserves this. He is amazing to say the least and genuinely cares about all his students. He is easily accessible and everything on the exams is purely from the lectures. Did not need to use the text at all. He is engaging and uses examples to help you understand the material a lot better.
Michael is a phenomenal professor. He really cares about his students and wants to see them succeed. He doesnt rush his lectures so they are easy to follow and opportunity to take good class notes. Nothing bad to say about Michael 10/10 would recommend
Mike genuinely cares about his students and is there to help you and push you every step of the way. He gives clear instructions for exams and assignments and makes sure you are prepard. He takes attendance and gives marks for attendance and participation. I would highly recommend him and will pick him over any other instructor given the chance!
This was my fourth class with Mike, as he is the most caring prof at Douglas. He really wants you to learn and succeed in the class, and encourages to ask him for help and guidance. I'm hoping he teaches other upper level legal study/crim courses because he's honestly the best prof.
Michael Sporer is a really passionate professor. If you participate in his class and get your work in on time, he will help you in any way he can; he wrote 3 pages of feedback for an essay I submitted, and suggested several books he thought I would be interested in. Super good, interesting professor who cares a lot.
LOVE HIM! He is super caring and he gives life advice. He gave me hope to become a great police one day. Participate and don't ever skip an attendance, if possible. WRITE everything that he says. An easy grader for sure! Don't forget to finish your paper early and then, please do visit his office for some proofreading and words of encouragement.
Go to class and youll pass. Repeats anything important twice or tells you its important. Everything on the mid terms or final exams are in his lectures. Also a very caring professor who cares about his job and what he teaches
I really respect this man but I will admit his lecture are boring. I left halfway through every class didn't study or buy the textbook and still passed his class.
Michael is a great prof. This is my third class with him and loves his classes. This is not an easy A class. Some questions can be worded tricky but once you show up and listen, you will do fine. Write down everything he says and learn the cases he gives as examples. There is 1 final, 1 midterm and 1 2000 word essay.
If you're looking for engaging and charismatic lectures, this professor is your man. He's got a style of his own and makes the lectures interesting with his anecdotes. Caring and considerate with simple course structures. No complications. An old school guy with a passion for what he teaches. Easy grader as well.
Amazing lectures and gives really good examples. Quite the storyteller! I loved his lectures and online he did amazing, make sure you take notes from lectures because tests will be based off only lectures!
Mike was a great professor, he has inspired and motivated me more than any prof I have had before. He likes to acknowledge hard work and achievements, which are greatly appreciated. The course was hard by nature of the material and type of assessment, but not necessarily because of his teaching style.
An amazing, knowledgable, and kind professor! Is always available to answer questions during and outside class and really cares about his students. The lectures are always very interesting, clear, and are directly related to the exam (no surprises). You will not regret taking a course with Michael, he is one of the best professors you could have!
Michael may have been the one of the best professors I have ever had in my college years! The course is already hard on its own and Michael prepares his students who are interested in going to Law School which makes it a little more difficult. However, Michael wants every one of his students to excel in the course! He is very helpful and caring.
He was 100%, my favourite professor. Criminal law with him is so entertaining and engaging. The class was super fun.
Michael is an old school professor, his lectures are an absolute snooze fest, but u need to attend them to get all the info as his exams are based purely from the lecture notes. Textbook his required, but not really. He is a caring prof, but his exams are pretty hard, but he seems to be a generous marker for the term paper.
The lectures are boring and goes very off topic, i do not recommend this class it has barely any resources and it is expected to watch 3 hours of lecture with 0 bullet points or notes, just talking.
I agree his lectures are kinda boring but just make sure you take good notes. He's a very nice guy though and he's very knowledgeable since he is an actual practicing lawyer.
By far the best prof I have had at Douglas and one of the best teachers I have had ever. So thoughtful in his feedback. So knowledgeable in his lessons. A great sense of humour. Just an all around great guy and best type of teacher. I highly recommend taking any and all classes you can with him.
He is a great person. There is no doubt that he is smart, caring and have so much knowledge/experiences from his professional life but... his class is really boring. online classes: he talks for 3 hours sometimes with no slides or just bullet points. His exams are hard and sometimes you really feel lost in his class lol
Professor Sporer is a good teacher, he really cares about his students and about what he teaches so the class isnt boring.
One of my favorite professors. Has a great amount of experience in law and really loves what he does. I didn't find the lectures as boring as others have said but I can see where they're coming from. If you take notes and watch all the lectures you will do well in his class. If you're interested in law I can't think of a better prof to have.
Mike teaches by orating his notes. If you are a good note-taker, you can do very well in his class. Because the slides are sparse, you must actively listen to what he says. Still, he always repeats and emphasizes essential points. Organize notes before the final exam. The final exam was 3 hours and most of us wrote for 2hr55m.
He is an approachable and knowledgeable instructor. I liked the breadth of topics covered in this intro class. He also makes reading recommendations, so you can dive deeper into a topic based on interests. Exams were based on lectures, taking notes is a must. He is very passionate about teaching, a great class for anyone interested in law or crim!
Professor Sporer is such a sweet person. He's really approachable. I had him for two classes and both had midterm, paper, final, and participation. He's a generous marker and his exam was quite easy. Just listen to his lecture and take good notes, all his exams are based off his lecture, bought the textbook but didn't read it and still passed.
Very friendly professor who wants all his students to succeed in not just his class, but in all areas of life. You can tell he is a lawyer by the way he holds himself and lectures. Mike had very interesting stories and didn't assign much homework beside textbook readings. I would highly recommend him as a professor.
Michael's classes are super easy and he is very engaging and adds humour to it too. His tests/exams are open book and you have to write a paper which is also super short and easy. He is accessible outside of classroom time and answers your questions appropriately.
Professor Sporer was probably the best prof I've had thus far. His lectures were interesting and he always made sure everyone understood the content. The one thing I will say is that the notes he writes on your paper will be hard to read. Other than that, this class was amazing!
Never knew law would be so fun to study, had the most out of class time spent with any prof in my life. He's very knowledge and experienced and very caring. Would love to take any course with him. Very understanding and approachable as well. Can't say enough good things about him all would be short to praise this gem of a person!
Best professor I've had since I moved to Canada. The lectures are pretty long but he gives two 15 min breaks so it won't feel that long. Answers questions asked throughly. Very caring professor and repeats the important parts of the lectures 2-3 times to make note taking easier. Study 6-8 hours before the tests and you'll get a good grade.
He has been the best professor I've had so far!! he always makes sure everyone is understanding the material and unlike other teachers he actually gives though feedback on how to improve. I would 1000% take one of his classes again. He makes coming to class fun and I think he actually cares about his students.
LECTURE HEAVY! He literally talks the entire class and gives 2 15 min breaks his slides are vague and expands the ideas through explaining the points so make sure you take GOODNOTES He repeats the important points. the entire course just note take. There are no homework or projects just midterm final participation I bought the textbook but DIDNTuse
I would never take him again. He's very strict and the lectures are very heavy. It was very hard to understand him the whole semester, he goes really fast and doesn't post his lectures on Blackboard. I would never recommend him as a professor to anyone. Don't waste your time and money, take someone else if you can.
Professor Sporer is very knowledgeable in his field. Not only is he a great prof, but he is one of the nicest people I've met. His lectures are very interesting and provide a lot of insight into criminology. I highly recommend taking a class with him. Take good notes in lectures and you'll be good.
If you show up, listen, and take lots of notes this course will not be hard. Michael is a caring teacher who motivates his students by giving them adequate feedback and support.
amazing and inspirational person! definetely a harder class as theres lots of content, but the effort you put in is the mark you receive. he is extremely caring and always willing to help. attendance mandatory but you can pass without textbook.
He makes his lectures interesting and he's very knowledgeable. The textbook required was never used.
Professor Sporer is passionate and knowledgeable. Lectures can be dense, but taking notes and using resources like unstuck ai help a lot. If you're interested in law, this is a great intro class.
Mike is inspirational and makes the class interesting. Great class
I've written about Michael in another comment, but I cannot do enough of these. This prof deserves the props. Please participate in his lectures! He makes the time go by fast with how engaging the lectures are. I've certainly learned a lot and he makes me want to keep learning. In my opinion, he's an amazing professor and everyone should take him.
