He's a great teacher. He always try his best to make us feel comfortable .

He's fun and he makes you read cool books, for example fight club and the beach. It's an easy A, we just did two papers that aren't that much.

You only have to keep up with (short) reading responses and two major essays. He let us do a creative writing piece for the mid-term essay. So if you are an aspiring writer, Mr. Spurgeon will give you some good constructive criticism. I liked the advice he gave, and am currently using it to turn in the piece to the school's literary publication.

Excellent professor! Kept lecture discussion open to individual opinions of each student vs. shoving his own out there. Welcomed creative thinking during book analysis forums in class. Has great sense of humor and personality. Used a variety of books and authors during the semester and allowed student to choose their favorite for final paper.

Prof. Spurgeon is a good teacher, he can be an ass at times (especially when criticising work), but over all I'd say he's alright. His only flaw is that he doesn't seem to know what a CLOCK is or have any concept of TIME cause he would let the most annoying student in the class ramble on until the class was over, which was absolutely frustrating.

His research essay is freaking rediculously too long and difficult. Its about freaking poetry AND it has to be written based on a literal theory. To tell you the truth, i wouldn't have taken this class if i knew how he ran things.

His advanced screenwriting class is really fun, and great for those with a lot or limited experience. The assignments are straightforward and the in class exercises and required films help hone skills learned in class. You must be motivated, though. A lot of writing is required, but it is a screenwriting class. And the final is going to the movies!

Took him for screenwriting. Easy class, but helpful. He has pretty strong ideas of what a movie should be and what it shouldn't so it's hard to write what you want to write sometimes, but it's good practice. Very into character development so if that's your weakness it's an especially good class to take. Overall, a great class and a great teacher.

Mr. Spurgeon is an excellent English teacher. He was very helpful and great at answering his students' questions. Though the class wasn't easy, it was entertaining and well worth the effort. I didn't especially like all the books he assigned, but none of them were boring. Keep up with the reading and assignments and you should do well in his class.

Best English teacher I've ever had! I hated English when I started, now it's one of my favorite subjects thanks to him. Very clear on what he wants from his students. I was a bad writer, now my other teachers say I should major in English cause I write so good! You have to write six essay's total. Only five are graded. Highly recommend! He rocks!

I took this class the yer before last and i am still dying to go back again. Spurgeon is fun and entertaining while he fills you in on everything that you need to know to begin a screenplay. It was never a chore to go to class, his feedback educated and very useful. I highly reccomend that you take his screenwriting classes.

There were 4 texts that were read with four essays.....BUT he teaches you how to write, think outside the box, and reminds you that reading can be enjoyable and not a mandatory thing! Trust me if you enjoy young professors who relate to you and want a class that challenges your personal strengths TAKE HIS COURSE!

He's a little tough on papers, but his lectures are interesting, and his assignments are easy. I received Bs on my essays but I completed every assignment, so I received an A in the class. Highly recommended.

I would recommend him. I took his English writing 300 class and his lectures were very interesting. His stories of Mexico are also fascinating. You will watch a movie called Frida about a Mexican artist and its a great movie. His grading methods on the essays are tough but I got a B overall. Take him.

Overall a very good teacher. He assigns a lot of outside reading, but it really does help you become a critical thinker if you can stomach the text. His lectures are helpful, and he goes out of his way to find creative and interactive ways to teach. I wouldn't say he's an easy prof, but its definitely possible to succeed.

Great teacher. Has high expectations. Believes strongly in his perception of Literature and needs to be a little more balanced in seeing others definition. He will challenge you to step outside of your box. Don't expect him to hand out compliments. He doesn't. He does not give out easy grades either. But he will make you a better writer.

Provides lots of valuable content, and covers a lot of ground. All the writing and reading can be a touch overwhelming, but the assignments are real simple. He's knowledgeable and helpful. I feel my writing improved and I learned a heck of a lot as a result of his teaching.

Though a fun class, Spurgeon has a problem being consistent in judging the quality of work. He'll give two people the same grade on poems, when one poem is clearly remedial. Then with short stories, he gave higher grades to some that were not as complex and nuanced as others. If you don't want your GPA and mind to be toyed with, stay away from him.

Spurgeon is very accessible. If you want to throw ideas at him, he has office hours and he'll talk to you about your paper. USE the opportunity. You also have the option to rewrite, a clear rubric, and peer input. It's a good course. He's a good instructor.

Professor Spurgeon is one of those teachers that could seem strict at first but as you sit down and listen to him talk about the topic at hand, you kind of lose yourself in thought. Spurgeon's critical thinking class has completely changed my outlook on life and my ways, and it was not just because of the theories but because of his teachings.

Spurgeon is one of those few professors you meet in your college career, the cool hipster types. While I sat through his lectures, I often found myself inspired and anxious to be productive, not just in school work but life in general. He is a high character and he loves what he does. I normally don't like english, and Prof. Spurgeon changed that for me! His lectures are interesting, and his expectations are clear. You write essays using the textbook, and he allows you to re-do them for a better grade. A lot of reading but it's not impossible to get through. I do have to say that he uses a lot of Lit. terms during lectures that I am unfamiliar with so I struggled to keep up in that sense.

Required rough draft then final draft. Rd is 3 pages, final is 4 pages long. Definitely attend his lectures, and this class has made me into a better writer.

Spurgeon is a real gem. He deeply cares about writing, is a wealth of knowledge on the subject, and really helps his students do the best they can. I can't say enough about Spurgeon, I just love the dude. I hope he still has the typewriter keys drawing in his office! I really wish I could go back and retake his class with the knowledge I have now.

Had an online meeting every couple of weeks to discuss the criteria for the next essay, there a four and a fifth as a final. All based on 1 or 2 books you choose from his list, and the textbook. He gives great insight to how to start the essay and is peer reviewed.

Great Professor. He made lectures interesting. Although, attendance is not mandatory you still have to watch his zoom video uploads if you want to pass the class and have a clear understanding of what's going on. You'll know your grade at the end of the semester.

I liked his online class, there is one book and you will write a discussion post on it weekly, pretty much graded on participation. 4 essays across the semester, different types of essays. Clear instruction, not too tough a grader, focuses on writing skills not grammar/formatting. Not hard as an online class and he is communicative. I recommend!

Super kind and laid back! We had a few essays and a book that was needed for this class that you could buy on amazon. Weekly discussions for that book and honestly a really simple class. Even if you don't like english i'm sure you'll learn something great in this class. He doesn't grade harshly and is super understanding, I wish I had him again!
