Ok professor - guess I like him in retrospect b/c I got an A - he likes it if you participate in class!
He is such a nice man! Respectful and sensitive towards students. The class itself is boring, but he tries to make it interesting. There are 2 midterm (very very easy) and a final (take home). There are also 3 short papers (opinions on cases) which are easy too. I deff. recommend him!!!
At first I pegged him as a pompous windbag, but by the end I had warmed a bit to him. He thinks he is open to ideas but doesn't really listen to what you say since he is entrenched in what he already believes. For the record he did not end Apartheid. Hard to get an A, easy to get an A-.
He is sooooooooooo boring.
This professor is an intellectual and expects as much from undergraduate seniors. You have to put in the work to get an A. There are three case analysis due and the exams are essay and M/C which are not hard because he gives you the questions ahead of time. Participate some and you will do fine.
This guy is all right, his class is useless and his lectures even more so. He's a little doughy and is definitely looking to hear thoughts that agree with him and pays short-strife to those that don't, but he won't hold it against you. EASY CLASS
he is sooo boring but easy. no deadlines for the papers no exams no attendance. Had to do only one debate which was bs. Got an A
How did you get an A in the class 5/18 when he didn't even give the grades yet?
he's pretty good. he makes you participate a lot and the class is boring. 3 case analysis, m/c and 3 essays for the 2 midterms and a take home final. take him if you're really angry with modern corporations.
Great Class and Professor. Workload reasonable and class is fun and interesting- Great Professor one of the best @ baruch
He's able to deliver lot of sense to a low priority subject. Exceptionally well read, has seen better days professionally. One has to adjust to his format of teaching. Class participation helps. Seemed pompous and opinionated but is not. Balanced in evaluation. A guy disagreed with him throughout the course and returned with an A. Asset to Baruch.
Nice guy...loves to talk..he's a historian, so he's not the usual business professor type, although he does provide relevant business articles. The class is basically useless, but that not his fault. You pretty much have to be either a retard or a total slouch not to get an A.
Very nice prof. 1 debate, easy pop quizzes (if you read the material before every class), and writing assignments. Although he grades the assignments harshly, he gives you a chance to rewrite them. He cares alot about teaching students.

Good guy, smart as hell. The things that would come out of his mouth were sometimes unclear only because his intelligence is so much higher than most students. Final was easy, all around good!
Prof. is very smart. pop quizes that were easy if you read the material (tells you the authors to pay attention). Grades papers harshly, but allowed to rewrite. As long as you don't slack off too much, A is no problem.
I wish he would just explain things in simple language. No one in the class knows what the hell he is talking about. Prof, I know you read this site: You are intelligent, so stop with the fancy words. "nomenclature?" No one talks like that anymore. When one speaks like that it appears that one is only booksmart w/o any valuable wordly experienc
This last post was hilarious, but true: He's a nice guy and class is not hard. However, he loves using words like 'bete noire' and 'pollyanna'..I guess grad students should know such words, but I had to look them up after a night of his class...don't know if he really talks like this or he is trying to make up for adjunct/lack of phd status.
He is very unclear...you will not understand a word out of his mouth. Be prepared to do lots of research on your own...especially for the term paper. He does a horrible job of preparing you for ethical issues in the workplace.
Prof.'s high level vocabulary makes it difficult for most students to understand what he is trying to say. If he would be just clear, concise and talk "normal", students would probably participate more in class. Be prepared to read lots of articles, chapters, and daily the newspaper. Class participation is highly stressed.
If I had a dollar for every name he dropped in class, I would not need to work. Teaches very aloof, treats MBA students as children. Offers very open-ended term paper with no guidance. Gave final exam questions before exam.
Very committed to subject matter but expects student discussion to drive the class. Seems officious at first but is really just well educated and well spoken. One exam one paper and a group "project". Requirements regarding the paper are very vague. Good grade if you know the basics. NICE GUY!!
Easy grader, considerate but unclear.
Nice guy, a little pompous and likes to drop names. I got an A- in the course, so it's difficult not to rate him well. You don't really learn too much from his lectures, but you do learn from cases and textbook. It was actually more interesting than I thought. Take him in the summer or in January. It's less work.
I am happy I took Prof Stauffer's class. He gave me a renewed appreciation for what it is like to be responsible for your actions as a business person. He teaches something other than just making money and that is hard to find at Baruch.
He is very nice and interesting and teaches you how to write in a business world. Four essays-three pages long each, one presentation (debates format), and a take home final: three essays-two pages long each. Very easy class although writing is time-consuming. Participation in class discussions is very important for your final grade. Recommended.
Class was thought provoking. Downside it was on a Sat.
Not a great professor. Agree with him or else! Lots of class discussion about very little. Case studies, but again only his view is the "right" one.
Professor Stauffer presents many big ideas. This is a thought provoking and extremely interesting class. My notions of “Business” were totally changed because of this class. Very open to differing students opinions. Do all the readings and attend class prepared and one can get a good grade. Great Class. Excellent Professor !!!!
Great person - very philosophical. He cares about the students and tries hard to keep the class motivated. Definitely be prepare to write a lot.
If you put a little effort into this course you'll take a lot from it. The key to getting an A is contributing to class discussions (so read the book), the essay final, the final paper, and the class presentation. The book reads like a high school sophomore book, but there is some valuable information in it you can use in class.
Class discussions are unrelated to exams. Textbook is never used in class, but used extensively in final exam.
very helpful and knows his stuff.....highly recommend him...
Class participation is very important & professor passes around an attendance sheet. Pay attention to his articles. Not a hard class but extremely boringgg. The professor thinks he knows everything.
This Professor is very nice but very boring. His classes are filled with him going on and on about the subject and every once in a while someone will make a comment. You have to do a debate with a classmate as well as right three three page papers about the other debate subjects. The final is a take home where you right three essays each 300 words.
He is very interested in the topic... and HIS point of view. If you agree with him, you will get to talk longer without interruption, but even then he tends to control the discourse. His use of vocabulary is not particulrlly impressive... a google search of what he says reveals mistatements of fact to support his view. He mispells "Paideia."
He thinks too much of himself and uses big words and brags about everything to impress people. The class is extremely boring and he talks way too much. Likes to have the last word. You are better off with someone else. I couldn't stand him!!!
The 1st 2 months of class were awful! Even though 20% of grade is participation we spent the entire time listening to him lecture. Very boring & difficult to understand. He assigns articles & then spends class time reading them back to us-I did not see the point of that. Class is pretty easy, but prof is unclear about what he wants for paper.
No clear direction on what you should focus on for the project or the final. You will not know where you stand all semester, and he will be the last professor to turn in your grade. Grading highly subjective on his ability to recall your name. Misses class often.
Likes to hear himself talk. Attendance Mandatory. VERY VERY Vague on ppr. Only class where you'll have no idea where you stand as there is no feedback on presentation, ppr or final. Final was more difficult than expected. Enjoyed Class-Easy A if you particpate in class. Case Studies were interesting! last Prof to turn in grades!
Very knowledgeable. Knows history and philosophy. Stimulates class discussions and thoughts. Challenges "standard" point of view. Great professor. Interesting discussions. Highly recommend him.
This a great class which definitely exceeded my expectations. Glad to see this class is a prerequisite for mba students. Expect to show up for every class and expect to do a lot of reading - but also expect to enjoy the subject matter and class discussions. Fantastic professor!
He is such a nice guy, but is SO verbose. Says you'll be expected to participate a lot, then proceeds to talk the entire time. Got boring for me, but he's very cerebral, which adds to the discussion content. Fairly abstract and vague, but mostly a relaxed class. He's probably the best option for this course.
Easily the best professor I've had since the beginning. It was refreshing being taught by someone with a broad worldview and the course subject is interesting too. Lots of reading, one group project, one final, one individual paper and attendance and participation.
Will load you with tons of articles, most of which are boring.90% of the time is spent on class discussions, most of which are irrelevant and have got nothing to do with the subject. He will give you no feedback about your performance so getting good grades is essentially a lottery. There are better better profs who teach business ethics out there
There's 1 paper 1 role playing debate and 1 final for this class. The paper is due on the day of the final and he does not give out the debate grade. He did not clarify what he wants with the paper, and only the general topics were mentioned for the final. If you always need to know where you stands in class, then he is not for you.
You'll have no idea how you're doing in class until you get your grade weeks after the final. Pretty much everyone is guaranteed a B, but you must work like mad to get an A. The topics are interesting and thought-provoking, but it's obvious that he wants you to conform to his thinking. I think your grade is partly based on your ability to conform.
If you are an avid reader of NYT, WSJ, FT, Economist, and have an affinity for philosophy you will love this class. If you prefer Gossip Girl, American Idol, Housewives of NJ, Tyra Banks Show, US Weekly, or TMZ, you will hate this class. What he really teaches is environmentalism in the guise of business ethics. Grades at a glacial pace.
Take this class if you like to read and think (and willing to defend your opinion, both in writing and in class). You will also have to do a lot of listening. He talks a lot. Don't take this class if you like a color-by-the-numbers education. He has a wealth of information and experience. You may just have to be patient to get to it.
I really wish I had taken this class with another professor. He gives you no feedback about how you are doing. The first time you see a grade is on your transcript. He likes people who talk a lot. Make sure he knows your name of you will never get and A. His teaching style is so dull that it makes you lose interest in the subject.
1 midterm, 1 final, 1 paper, 1 role play debate (group project) & LOTS of reading. No idea how you're doing in class until you see your transcript. Most of the class is a B+. Never use text book, no need to buy it. I won't take him if I have a choice.
Final, 10 pg paper, role play presentation. No midterm so don't know what the previous entry is about. He lectures 95% of the time. It's really hard to participate but if you do, higher chance to get A. Really boring class most of the time because he is constantly reading paragraphs from his handouts. Used book for his final. Average professor
Got an A. This guy is absolutely brilliant. Attendance is taken, one paper, one essay (you choose 3 out of 6), on case. Sure Stauffer talks a lot and likes to drop names and quotes, but he is thoughtful and passionate. Write down his quotes, anecdotes, and stories and incorporate them into your essays at the end. Not for mindless frat-boys.
In the morning he reads Financial Times and in the class he talks about what he read that day. He gave us tons of articles to read, plus the book and case studies. He liked to read to us:one day he read Aristotle for 45 min.So boring! He does not teach what is in the book. He talks about irrelevant things. No idea what to study for final. Crazy
Participate in the class, it is 10% of the grade.Final is 40% and for final you need to write 3 essays. You will know what 6 topics will be on exam from the start, so try to pick 3 topics in the first half of the course, and that is all you need to study for final. Memorize some quotes and outline for each topic and you will get an A as I did :)
Waste of time. He only talks about irrelevant things. AVOID HIM!!! Worst class ever! He made me totally hate the MGT field so he is helpful in something at least.....
If you have a chance to take him, do not pass on it. Extremely easy class, no exams. 4 papers, 3 pages each and one debate, take home final. You do not need the book. He is very knowledgeable of the business world and wants you to learn something. Lenient with late assignments without any penalty. An easy A!
This is the most boring professor I have ever had at Baruch. It's sad to know that many students don't appreciate quality. If you are one of those go ahead and take him. This is indeed an easy class but you won't obtain any valuable knowledge from his never-ending lectures.
Good willed super passionate intellectual, can be sensitive. To get an A always attend class punctually, participate regularly, have a positive attitude toward the subject, rehearse for the case, hand in assignments on time, and combine points from the Carrol book with the assigned readings and handouts during the final (45%), citing specifics.
GREAT TEACHER! Cares about what he does! If you are dedicated student you will do fine. Anyone who can complain about this guy should not be in a graduate program! Great teacher I would take him again for any other course he taught no questions asked. He challenged me to think and opened my eyes to corporate social responsibilty.
VERY ethical guy. Some discussion engage the entire class, some, half the class is sleeping. Easy A though. Read the case studies for the paper/final/panel discussion. Book only will get you B+ at MOST. I enjoyed the class and it DEFINITELY opened my eyes about ethical behavior in the business and payoffs with proactive resolutions.
Don't take him .Class will never end. His articles and cases. the book gives you a B. It was like a philosophy class. Aristotle and his ethical world. Don't like anybody to debate him.If you already took him. Just agree what he says.He will be happy. Boring and useless
Class is boring. He says he wants a class discussion but he just keeps talking and when you want to speak he goes "Just let me finish my point." Work isn't bad: 1 group debate, 4 compositions, & take home final (kind of long). He's an easy grader.
GPA killer!! Beware. He knows a wealth of information, especially current events. You HAVE to participate in this class. You can get all 90s on the cases, debates and final that he gives and end up with a B+ because you didn't participate enough according to him. Don't take him if it isn't a must. HARD GRADER!!!
So boring, pontificates on nothing droning on and on. Upside: allows laptop use so nobody pays attention. Likes people to participate. Interrupts students during discussion to talk himself. You have to present a case with a group, write a paper and take the final (all essays) - that's it to get your grade.
Professor Stauffer is passionate and knowledgeable. I recommend his class because he incorporates a lot of current events. His final exam is fair and it's a take home essay. Remember to participate in class and work hard on the debate and short essays, you'll get an A.
Very knowledgeable, but sometimes boring. 1 group in-class debate (easy), 2 papers, and an essay final exam.
You wil READ. READ. READ! So be ready. it's endless. Exam is easy (make sure to mention parts from his readings to get an A.) He answers emails too.
It was one of the best classes I ever took. Prof. Stauffer is very knowledgeable, and his tactic is to give food for thought. He was great!
One case study with a presentation, 1 10-page paper, written final. Participation is worth20% of your grade. He likes to hear himself talk and stand on his metaphorical soapbox. You will learn practically nothing. He leaves only a little time for discussion. Tons of reading!!!
I enjoyed the class overall. He likes to talk but he doesn't bother anyone that doesn't participate. 1 Group Case Study presentation, 10 page paper on any topic you want, and a final exam that is basically from the first day class topics. You will not go wrong if you take him. Be patient.
He sits on his soap box a lot and it's tough to participate, but he's passionate about the material and respects students. Good use of case studies to tie in with course material. I would recommend taking during the winter session (I bet this course would draaaag on a normal semseter), but you won't know your grades on any individual assignments!
The grading was questionable - but I'm sure no one got less than a B. Over all he was pretty good. He has very strong opinions about the subject matter. often he lets emotions get the best of him if a student pushes his buttons which can be distracting. When he sticks to the material - its good stuff.
Well-prepared, passionate. Classes interesting individually but a bit repetitive over semester. Also, it's really hard to know how he arrives at your grade. I did fine with a reasonable, fair amount of work but I literally don't know my grade on ANY specific element of the course (participation, final, easy group project, unrelated 10-page paper).
Wonderful professor. Every chapter is presented based on current real life examples. You have to be open to learn from this class. Yes, you have to read a lot, but this is why you are a graduate student. I highly recommend prof. Stauffer. Regarding the grade, debate participation is very important.
His lectures are a snoozefest! You really have to pay attention in order to understand the connections he is trying to make. Prof. Stauffer is really nice and love the topic, but in my opinion he does not execute the class well. Also, there is no clear structure to the class or the assignments.
Professor Stauffer is passionate about the material. He cares for his students and tries to keep class interesting. The topics are challenging; those without some background in philosophy will find some of the content difficult. Read articles on the e-reserve and do some research on names and ideas covered in class. Come ready to contribute.
Really really nice person. That being said, class is one of the most boring ones i have taken. Talks a lot. Some stuff is interesting, but most of it makes you go HUH? You will have no idea how you are doing in the class. Final was challenging but fair and everything else is easy but annoying (final paper, presentation).
Prof. Stauffer's Business & Society class may be one of the best I've taken at Baruch. He is incredibly passionate about this subject and really tries to extend that passion to his students. Only thing would that I wish he provided grades during the semester so I could see how I was progressing...
Professor Stauffer is a very passionate professor. You can clearly tell he genuinely cares for his students and the course topics. Proffessor Stauffer gives MASSIVE amounts of reading handouts. For the class there is an easy group project, 10 page paper basically on anything, and a final which consists of essay questions. I highly recommend.
Highly recommended . Easy A. Best professor I've had so far at Baruch. He isn't limited with one subject. At first might be confusing, but really helps you start thinking, learn to connect things . Don't forget to be respectful , listen and participate. Attendance sheet is there, but not a must. Group project , 10 pg. paper and exam at the end.
Fair A!! You work average but get an A! GPA booster!! Take it . Take it. Take it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Easy A. Just participate!
I would take him again. Great professor, give him a chance. If you attend classes and read, you'll be fine. 10pg paper and final. Very educated professional. Sends out all materials you need and Hands out articles often.
Took in the summer. LOTS of readings. Not an easy A. Be prepared to participate. The irony is you'll be lucky if you can get a word in b/c he loves to talk and go off on a tangent. Also, do not dare challenge him in class. You'll be refuted immediately. Also, not a clear grading policy - You'll get one grade the entire semester and it's final.
very fortunate to have a professor like him at baruch. professors at baruch teach stuff which we have no interest in remembering after our finals. Professor stauffer taught us to think and discuss the material. all the lectures, topics and discussions were so interesting i didn't find a problem in participating. his feedback is really helpful!!
Took Winter session. Assigns a lot a lot a lot of reading. Not everything is so clear, the whole purpose of the class is, though. According to him, less difficult paper than regular session. Requires some getting used to. But if you read and participate in class - you'll be fine for the final.
Took this class during winter session so pretty intense. Really interesting topic, however, the classes can be quite tedious. He talks a lot about himself and his Nobel prizes buddies. Ton of readings and I hardly made the connection between class material and the book. Participation matters a lot. Overall it's an ok class and he's a fair grader
Interesting professor with a wealth of corporate experience to back-up his claims. Lectures can be really interesting at times and/or really tedious. Good class to take for a compact schedule, as the workload is manageable. Overall, would recommend the professor.
Prof is clearly VERY knowledgeable, but doesn't care about ur opinion. Don't argue with him, not worth it. I didnt do any of the reading (theres a LOT) and I managed to skate by, which was nice. The 10 page paper is interesting bc you can write on whatever you want. A decent class and Prof overall.
Prof Stauffer's goal is to make you think about business differently, in terms of ethics and creating value to the community around you. His style of teaching (which is him just talking about whatever comes to his head) can be a bit boring to most students, but if you really try to understand the points he's making, you can get something out of it.
He does ramble a little bit at times, but ultimately I'm glad I took his class. He tries to get you to think and is very passionate about the topic. Sometimes CSR is viewed as fluff, but again his goal is to get you think about why its not. Lots of reading but I thought a pretty generous grader on the assignments.
Prof. Stauffer was the best professor I have had in 3 years I have been to this school. The attendance is not mandatory, yet I couldn't wait to go to his class. Very caring and knowledgeable. Three papers and one group project. I really wish Baruch had more professors like him.
Great professor. He open your eyes to real problems in Management, analyzing the point of view of companies and consumers. You learn new approaches for Corporate Social Responsibility, how to be a good manager, the difference between shareholders and stakeholders and how important are both. Homework relies on how to be diplomatic. 1 presentation.
Fairly straight forward class. Prof Stauffer is very knowledgeable, tends to go on rants a bit but its all in good faith. Grade is based on an in class debate, 2 online forums, 2 reaction papers, and a final take home exam. Very easy.
Professor Stauffer was amazing. Public speaking was not my specialty but encourage students to do well. Each student is graded individually throughput the group debates. Provides feedback on debate materials for pros/cons articles, each group member must speak for five minutes, allows students to use flash cars, two composition papers ( two pages each), two black board responses, and a take-home final that includes three questions ( write an essay for each question). Also, Professor Stauffer dislikes when students read their debate material from flashcards, instead, try to make it a conversational debate when speaking to students. Trust me, take Professor Stauffer, he is an easy grader.
The class is lecture heavy, but it's very interesting! Professor Stauffer has a lot of amazing concepts and personal knowledge to share. 1 in-class debate (don't read off the index cards!!), 2 papers (2 pages each), 2 blackboard responses, and a take-home final (3 prompts, 2 pages for each). Work hard and professor Stauffer will give a good grade!
Super passionate about corp social responsibility. Lectures tend to be boring, but at least he throws some humor in there. DO NOT read off index cards for the debate. Deadlines are loose for writing assignments just make sure you hand everything in on the last day. Assignments are totally manageable and evenly spaced so you won't feel over whelmed
No textbook required. Do give you a take home final, which is a paper to write. Lots of ready. He loves to ramble and talk the whole class. Interesting topics. Not a bad class.
DO NOTTT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!! you will get good grades on the assignments but he will still gave a really bad grade which leave you wondering why. I was not even worried about this class because I had good grades for everything but still ended up with a bad grade.
Get ready to read.
The class basically consists of 6 200 word blogs due throughout the semester and one group debate. Do not read off the index cards and if you do sufficient research, you'll do well. In the end, I felt like I deserved a higher grade but he grades everything at the end of the semester so no feedback for the blogs, only for the debate.
Prof. Stauffer is amazing if you want to actually learn about real problems and he is super passionate about the subject. He has clear grading criteria so if you follow it, participate, read the articles, and do the best you can he will give you a good grade. He doesn't give feedback besides the debate but he gives a grading system in the syllabus.
