Really easy going teacher. You get a lot of hands-on experience. Not a great teacher. Not organized. But it's a fun class, which encourages creativity. Good for film buffs and wannabe directors.
good teacher to learn directing from (beginging film making)
If you are a tall, hot, blond or sweedish you'll do fine in this class. If you are a dude, you'll be lucking if he gives you the time of day. He likes to hear the sound of his own voice and will stare at the hot chick most of the time.

Pretty good teacher, especially when compared to some of the other film teachers. I didn't learn a whole lot, but it was an enjoyable class, and I recommend him as a teacher.
Online Class. Very Fun. Rec if you enjoy movies and writing. Slow communication on the professors part. A bit unorganized. Just do all of the assignments on time and you will do fine.
Very good teacher, nice guy.
Mike Stinson is the man. Taught me ecerything I know about editing! Now it's what I do for a proffession. Hey, good going on checking out the chics Mike! That's what I would be doing...oh, no...that's what I was doing in your class..oh yeah..you were teaching! Lucky I learned enough for a new career!I HIGHLY recomend.Mike's a UCLA film grad 2!

Stinson is a cool teacher.. the class consisted of 2 papers, 2 tests and the remaining 20% composed of attendance points. Don't miss the class, attendance will write your papers for you. Another perk of the class for those interested, he's a cutie.
Good to look at~ Hello Silver Fox!!
I received an "A" in this class. It wasn't very hard... if you go to all the classes thats a big deal because attendance counts alot. Its two essays and two tests... basically the work really isnt too difficult and you can tell he's passionate about his work. If you can write a paper this class shouldn't be too hard.
great teacher! Make sure you go to class, i missed 4 classes but i did a 4 page paper for extra credit and still got an A in the class. Plus, hes not bad to look at. Take this class you will learn a lot!
awesome teacher, very fair and very cool and creative
This class isn't as easy as it appears, i didn't do well on the midterm, but i did extra credit ( a must) and i got an A. Attendance is BIG, it's the easiest way to guarantee you'll get a good grade, so go to class. On a side note, for all those girls who like george clooney types Stinson's pretty hot.
Very nice guy, class wasn't hard at all. Attendance is most important. And God damn is he HOT! ;-)
He is the hottest older teacher that I have ever had, I loved the class, it was super easy and he is so understanding and helpful with questions.
Stinson is a great teacher and is helpful and the class is an easy A. the midterms are lame but easy and same with final.
Had him 4 screenwriting. Worst teacher I've ever had. If you want an easy A, he’s for you. If you really CARE about screenwriting, stay clear. He’s smooth but disconnected and uses a canned charm in place of commitment and talent. Compare notes with friends: his "comments" are mostly copy/pastes he’s used on other papers. What a waste of time.
Although I never had his screenwriting class I do plan to take it this semester. Intro to film was great with Stinson. He is an easy going teacher and pationate about film. I learned alot about analysing films in his class, about colors, the way the movies were edited, mis-en-scene, ect. Learning how movies can influence people. Good for intro film
When it comes to film Prof. Stinson knows whats up. If you have a desire for any edge of film he has been there within his career. Very nice, clear, and creative. I HIGHLY recommend going to class each day because part of your grade is attendence. If you done exceed your 2 excused absents, and finish both films for the semester. Your an A!!!
One of the greatest teachers I have ever had. Has the desire to teach and teaches so clearly. Made film a blast for me gave great in sight into the movies. Definitely a must take class. Once again Best teacher I ever had
This class was amazing. Best teacher ever! No homework, two papers, a midterma dn a final. Make sure you go to the review and you"ll do fine on both tests. I learned alot!!
Great Teacher! Relly nice, and really wants everyone to do well in class. I learned a lot about film, and he made my friend even switch from comm to a film major!
Great teacher. Class is laid back, and usually pretty interesting. Two papers, one midterm, and the final are the only grades for the class which makes it a pretty relaxing class. Nice guy and an easy 3 credits
Definitely recommend taking film studies 101 with Stinson! He's an amazing teacher... knows what he's talking about...Take this class!
Film Studies was a breeze, the movies are amazing, lectures are interesting, definitely gives you a new perspective when you watch films, I did not touch the book once, don't even bother buying it! Two papers, midterm and final, this class is easy, fun and insightful! Definitely recommend it. Stinson is a very nice and approachable person.
I thought this class was going to be harder then it really is. You NEED to go to class!!! The movies are guy movies but some are pretty good. He has a toutor for helping people wright there papers. USE HIM! He is nice and helpfull and tells you everything on the mid term! Go to class dont fall asleep and u will get an A for sure!
Best teacher ever! Hes auctually really good looking too! really knows what he is talking about and i wish there were more classes that i could take with him! TAKE HIM!!!! hes a fox!
2 five page papers and two midterms. Very knowledgeable and pretty organized. You must attend class (every single one!) and most importantly:READ!!! there is absolutely no point, grade-wise or academically, unless u finish the reading! Try to write papers on the less popular movies. you'll most likely do much better. Makes movies more fun to watch!
DONT BUY THE TEXT BOOK! EVERYTHING YOU NEED IS ONLINE HE SHOWS IT TO YOU IN CLASS. COOL GUY! JUST DO THE WORK AND SHOW UP AND YOU'LL BE FINE!
Great teacher, great class..don't need the textbook just show up to class..he makes the films really interesting even if your not a film major!
Really great teacher super knowledgeable about film. Some of the movies he shows are kind of boring but it's still a great class. He also looks like an older version of Christian Bale...yyyeah.
Fantastic teacher. Very easy to learn from him and he can relate to student issues. He is very approachable and knowledgeable on the subject of film. Has a very strong work base on the subject as well.
He explains everything very clear, he knows a lot about the subject, his classes are interesting and he is passionate about the subject
He's a suuuuuuper interesting prof. Make sure to speak up when you are talking to him though. He is kind of deaf (seriously, he wears a hearing aid sometimes). Very nice, very helpful, very hot for an older guy ;)
Love this class, tells you EXACTLY what he wants and expects from you. He wants everyone to pass. DO NOT come in late or MISS class. He is extremely passionate and why would you even come late or miss class with him as a teacher?
Stinson is by far my favorite teacher so far this year!! He is extremely insightful and loves what he does. Is always there for questions and is lenient on due dates. I recommend anyone who is considering taking to do it!! he's great and you wont regret it!
Stinson is the man! If you LOVE movies (who doesn't?), then you should definitely take this class. He gives so much detailed information about the film industry, and is very interesting. He is a very laid back guy who wants all of his students to pass! I loved this class so much, I'm thinking about changing my major! Take this class, you'll love it
GREAT, stinson is the man he is great and is interesting.
Stinson is a great film teacher. You can tell he loves movies and he'll turn you into a movie lover. He makes u think about films in a unique way and its very fun. Good movie choices and insightful things to say about each one. I never even bought the book. Hard not to be interested, i got an easy B. Definitely take this class.
Very interesting class and very easy. Attendance is mandatory only because he takes role fairly often. He chooses really good movies and after being in the class I am a lot more aware of the details of movies. I would definately recommend this class with him.
Wasn't very fond of him at the start but he grew on me. He doesn't give the bs busy work that most teachers require. I attended every lecture, did the reading, and turned in the few assignments he gave on time, and came out with an A. One of my favorite classes I had last semester, a lot of interesting material. Just don't get on his bad side ! ;)
One day you watch a movie and the next day you discuss it. That repeats throughout the semester. He calls role so attendance isn't mandatory if you have a friend call here for you. His grading on the midterm and final is very fair. We watch really interesting movies. His lectures are boring. Easy A.
He was a good teacher. He made the subject interesting, and I find myself using the information I learned in his class while watching movies all the time. I really enjoyed it, I definitely recommend film studies. I also recommend this teacher, he was funny and knows his stuff. Good class!
Stinson clearly believes in and enjoys what he does, which is important in a teacher. He?s extremely articulate and engaging with the class, which was over 100 students. The films we watched were excellent, and the class definitely helped to unwrap them for the pieces of art that they were.
Stinson loves what he does. All of the films were interesting and the lectures were quick. I never opened the book and got a A on both the midterm and final. The only work that he requires is the film paper at the end of the semester. He guides you through it and makes it very easy. TAKE THIS CLASS!! EASY A
Mediocre teacher. Easy to get B in class. Watch movies & chill. Nothing too exciting but good class to take for elective. Sort of hard to get A but with work manageable.
He's a great teacher, teaches well. Gives MAny opportunities as long as you talk to him about it. Go to class, the movies are chill, and you'll be amazed at the things that you probably missed out from the movie, when he explains them in the next class.
You can get through w/o the textbook, but it helps. He pretty much tells you what's on the midterm and final, so that just leaves you with the paper. Easy class. Good movies. He's super chill and understanding, and really excited about what he teaches. For anyone taking 101H, it's just 1 extra hr a week and you pretty much do nothing. Worth it.
Really, really easy class. Its simple: do well on the midterm and final (they are not hard) and then put some effort into your paper. That is all that you get assigned (honors has a presentation that is SUPER easy). Basically you watch AWESOME movies and learn cool facts about the movie industry. TAKE THIS CLASS, its a GPA booster!
TAKE THE HONORS SECTION. If you do, you don't have to attend class, only the honors part (1hr/week). This guy is a baller. He understands this class is irrelevant to almost all his students, so he really makes it easy. I only got a B, but I literally only attended class for 3 of the screenings...
class is cool, stinson is not so much. he's very distant from the class and somewhat rude to some students. seemed like he would deliberately ignore your answer if it wasn't his answer and would ignore hands being raised for questions for what reason, i don't know.
super chill class. all you do is watch movies. then on the second day he goes through the book to explain a few things. some of the movies are boring, so you might crash. not too many grades in the class. attendance 20 pts, 2 tests 20 pts each, paper 40 pts. He is pretty lenient with the grading, all you gotta do is talk to him. easy class take it
Attend class, don't get the textbook. End of semester essay is worth 40%.Don't take the class to get an easy A, coz it's not easy unless you're bomb at essays. Take pass fail for the credit, unless you're happy with a B.Class is chill, watch movies then talk about them.
Even the Honors section is extremely easy. You present for 20 minutes on a director, and it doesn't matter if you even reach that limit, it's just participation credit. Never went to the screenings as an Honor student. The answers to the midterm and final are literally handed to you if you go to the review day. Highly recommend as a GPA booster.
One of the best teachers I have had at SBCC. He truly knows what he is talking about and engages the class. He is helpful and if you go to class you will get an A. Amazing teacher. And, hes hot.
Bases all his teaching on the textbook. The screenings are pointless. We do not discuss nor analyze any of them. Not allowed to ask questions and if you do he will give you the rudest, "Go look it up in the book" answer. Not passionate in his teaching and repeats himself again and again. He will let you out 2 hours early rather teach. RIDICULOUS.
He alright, class is cool because you watch movies 75% of the time. He's a pompous jerk if your in his lecture class, take honors he will treat you better. Better film classes if you want a good teacher thou, theres a reason he doesnt make movies .
Really bad teacher. Took him last semester, easy A but doesn't teach well. Surprised there are so many good reviews on here most people must not be studying film but merely taking the class for IGETC requirements. Just my $.02
He definitely knows the material, but the class revolves around the textbook. Tests come directly from textbook website. He's an understanding guy but comes off as arrogant. Went to his office hours twice and he wasn't there. Your grade is based off of 100 points only, so you really gotta know everything and be in class if you want a decent grade.
Very Helpful
Very easy class however, Stinson is not a good teacher, is not clear, and is rude. Take this class with another teacher if possible.
He is great! Take his class, just make sure to start your paper early and study for the midterm and you will get an A, it only gets hard toward the end but it is perfect for students who need a lot of time during the semester. And I definitely recommend him
Professor Stinson is really sweet! He is understanding and if you need help with your paper he has great advice! Most of his movies are pretty cool. He does throw in a couple boring films but the good films even out the duds. Don't miss class because he does randomly take attendance and will drop you after 3 missed classes! He is hot!
Just study the book and begin with your final paper as soon as you can. Also attend class every day because he randomly takes roll. He comes off as a strict teacher but he is actually pretty chill. + he is gorgeously hot which is a bonus. Totally recommend seating in the front especially when he is wearing t-shirts. Great view.
He was extremely confusing.
Passionate about film, but can sometimes come off overconfident. Just show up, take notes, and study. Shows really good films (some can be boring) and doesn't want to fail his students. Start the paper as soon as you can!!
I liked him, although I wouldn't be able to ask him any question since I felt intimidated. If I didn't understand something I would just ask around and that worked out alright. He could be a bit more mellow so more students can feel more comfortable approaching him.
He is clearly passionate about film. But he is really confusing about his assignments, especially for the 5 pages essay. Exams are hard if you do not read the textbook like me. He is more than fair with grading and gives you a lot of extra points and extra credits. I got a B
Very easy, just show up. You don't need the textbook because his lectures use a PowerPoint made by the authors.
GREAT , PROFESSIONAL professor. Extremely passionate, and helpful. just study for the midterms and do the film proposal and you will get an A.
Professor Stinson is passionate about film and it shows in the materials and lectures gives. A great class for students interested in film, but considered very boring for students who don't understand the fundamentals of good film. Owning the textbook is essential to passing this class, few tests, amazing films, great lectures.
Super hot. All you really need to know.
Stinson was awesome! I showed up mostly everyday and passed with an A. you write one paper, take a midterm and a final and thats it. Really easy, and interesting. He shows a variety of different movies, and is very knowledgeable of film. Definitely take him!
Rent the book don't buy it! Or go to the library and read the chapters. He is never in his office & doesn't answer emails right away. (I'm still waiting for a response) He is late to class & his lectures are ok, take notes! The movies are ok. Do the extra credit! He kind of looks like a younger Clint Eastwood from The Bridges of Madison County.
Amazing Professor, easy straightforward classes. DONT buy the book, u will never use it, just do the online quizzes and you're set! You have to try to not get an A in this class. I would take him again. go to class or else grades would be deducted.
An inspiration from day one. Not only is his ability to clearly explain the material pristine, he also has background experience and knowledge of film that make his class so exciting! Only one midterm and final, 20 questions each, which are so easy if you have done the reading and payed attention in class. Honors section available-one pp present.
20% of your grade is attendance, he tends to take attendance a lot more at the end of the semester so be there. 20% is your 20 question midterm which is fairly easy. 40% is a 5-8 page term paper which if you put a fair amount of effort in you will do fine. 20% is your 20 question final which is easy as well. Cool guy, actually learned a lot.
To be honest I took this class because of the credit. Film studies does not interest me. I did not do very good on my midterm, but I worked hard on my paper and I guess I did well on the final and got highest grade. This class is a easy A, if you put a little effort in it. Class attendance important in the end of the semester. P.s. he's hot!
Amazing professor. Take this class. Paper, midterm, and final. Show up to class and you will pass. You often times get out of class early and you watch a movie once a week. Highly recommended.
Professor Stinson is incredible!! He is very flexible with helping you out if you are going to miss an exam and with turning in anything late. He is an overall amazing teacher!
Such an inspirational professor. I really enjoyed this class and would highly recommend it to anyone! There were 3 exams, (multiple choice) and 1 analysis paper due, which were very manageable.
Very laid back class. You watch movies half the week and go through lecture the other half. Only two exams which are very easy to get an A. Term paper is long and rather boring to write but Stinson has minimal expectations to give A's on them. Don't skip class too often or he'll give you a very low attendance / participation grade.
Basically you just watch movies every class and sometimes he gives small lectures that are pretty interesting & he obviously loves film. Not a lot of work in this class and its all pretty easy. Isn't very clear about every assignment & the mid/final are hard if you don't do the reading. There is one research paper & attendance is a big grade.
Michael is a great professor! Every week you watch a film (both old & modern movies). There are weekly discussion posts about the films, 1 midterm (online 20 MC questions), 1 final (in-class 20 MC questions), and a final paper on 1 of the films we watched (5-8 pages). Overall easy yet informative class on film basics & analysis. Highly recommend!
Good Teacher. Had him MW, mondays are movie days and wednesday is lecture also calls roll. Just do the research paper and take the online quizzes for the midterm and final and you should be ok and read the textbook.
This class is incredibly brutal to sit through if you don't enjoy older style film movies. That being said if you have the mental capacity to watch a boring 2 hour film twice a week, you will get an A. Midterm and Final are easy just take the practice quiz's and you will get an A on both. Explains what he wants from you everyday for 10 minutes.
1 final and 1 midterm. 20 questions both! Will go over what you need to know before the midterm and final so make sure to be there. You're supposed to "read" every week. But I never bought the book and still got an A. Just pay attention to lectures. Monday you watch movies every week and Wednesday is lecture day. 1 paper is required for his class.
grading criteria is very specific. show up to class because roll is taken at random. take all of the sample quizzes online and you will pass the two exams.
Should be an easy A as long as you do the little work that is asked of you. 2 hours a week outside of class is more than enough for an A.
I took the hybrid film 101 class, where lectures were mostly online, and the one class meeting a week was to watch the movie. Personally, I wished I had taken the 2x week class, because his lectures were interesting and he had a genuine passion for film. I enjoyed the films we studied. Feel I learned a lot re:film composition/history/production
Great Professor and teacher of the film arts
One thing I didnt like about the class is how if you're on time with assignments and others aren't, they aren't punished for it, I scrammed to get my paper in on the due date and I saw multiple people turn theirs in days-weeks late for full credit. Why is there even a due date???... Apart from that, great professor, fun/interesting class
Really great prof, he gives 1 midterm, 1 final, and 1 term paper. Very easy class if you do the reading and go to class. He will drop you if your not there for attendance.
Simply easy class, feels like it almost shouldn't be a college course due to the fun factor of the lectures. Definitely would recommend to others! Gives plenty of time to finish your work beyond the due dates. Two exams with very clear study guides along with a paper. Rubric wasn't very clear for the paper, though. Still a great class!
to his film studies 101 class great teacher ! 1 midterm 1 paper 1 final. you gotta do he reading though! he reviews each exam a week before and give extensions IF necessary. he lectures but the exams are mostly based on the reading! attendance is mandatory he'll drop you from the class if u miss more than 3 days! other than that i'd recommend it!
Great professor. Super accommodating and flexible if needed. Attendance is crucial, but besides that, he is very passionate about the subject which makes you want to learn!
Dr. Stinson is an incredible professor. He really taught me much more than I expected when taking a film course, and I would gladly take it again. This class is easy, if you pay attention in class you'll do fine. His lectures are great and he's very passionate about film. Also, turn your phone off, he's a savage about phones in class.
I enjoyed all the movies Prof. Stinson made us watch, he even used examples from other different movies in his lectures as well. It's very easy to get an A in his class as long as you study his quizzes online. Only one big essay, a midterm, and a final for the entire semester. I Rarely used the book. Would absolutely recommend to anyone!
A pretty easy class. There's a midterm, final, and one essay. The tests aren't hard. He usually gives a practice test and during the exam he even says some of the answers for the questions lol
Great professor!!!!! Pay attention to his Lectures and you won't need to study for the midterm and final and don't skip class.
I definitely recommend Stinson. Grading is simple, 20-point midterm, 20-point final, 20-points participation(showing up), and 40-point paper. As long as you show you really tried on the Paper, he is a pretty nice grader. Just actually put some effort into it. Anyway, all you have to do is come to class and study for the two tests. Take his class!
Stinson is great professor. You have to be in class because he does take attendance, there are literally just three things that he grades on, a midterm, a final, and a final paper. Final paper he grades really easy on but he stresses heavy about, the midterm and final are very not that hard as long as you come to the class before and study.
Literally the worst teacher I have ever had. I sent him tons of emails and messaged him on Canvas multiple times over a couple of weeks and never got a reply over. The next class he refers to the "many emails he's been getting" meaning he saw them and chose not to respond. There's an essay that he barely talks about until after its due.
He's pretty funny and it's a really easy class. Half of the class meetings are just watching films and the other half are lecture. The midterm and final are really easy too if you pay attention and/or take notes in class. Also he's super nice if you need to talk to him, he's actually really understanding.
Seems intimidating at first but is really helpful if you talk to him/ask questions. Attendance is part of your grade, so show up to class. Only 2 tests (midterm and final), questions are pulled straight from the textbook. Final paper is worth most of your grade, so put effort into it and meet with him for feedback (he's very helpful if you ask)
Personally, I prefer when teachers update canvas, but nothing was posted on canvas. It's near the end of the semester and I still don't know my grade in this class. I've been to every class and I take notes, but I feel like I haven't been taught anything about film. The movie choice was great tho.
Stinson is the MAN. Super funny and class was amazingly easy. Midterm, final, and one paper. Half the course is just movie watching. Pretty serious about attendance and will drop you if you miss too much. Really cool and interesting movie selection as well. You'll be on his good side if you hate musicals as much as he does LMAO.
Michael is really serious about coming to class and will randomly drop you if you miss too much. Also if you're on your phone during his class he will call you out in front of 150+ students. He doesn't put anything on canvas so you have absolutely no idea what your grade is until after the final. Pretty easy and boring though
Prof. Stinson is extremely passionate about film, and his lectures were really inspiring. The only work you will have to do is read a chapter a week from the textbook to ace the midterm and final, and there's one paper you have plenty of time to prepare for. Also, his film choices were so good that I was really excited to come to class every time.
honestly didn't use the textbook, he covers everything pretty well on lecture day, the practice quizzes will give you plenty of guidance and they seem to come from his test bank. make sure you show up to class or you might just come next week and have gotten dropped! it sounds harsh but its an easy class, he's a really good guy and loves his job
Your entire grade in this class will come down to 4 things. The final, the midterm, the paper you write at the end and your attendance. Attendance goes a long way. Hes definitely passion about his job. Youll watch both good and awful movies.
I learned so much taking this course. Stinson is a great Professor! You only have three assignments so make sure you study for the two exams and do as much as you Can for the film analysis paper. Hes very understand and accommodating! So, if you need anything dont hesitate to ask! Hell understand! Take his course, you wont regret it!
If you show up read the book and write the paper you will pass
Prof. Stinson was horrible. He did not seem to care at all, and did not put an effort into his lectures. Essentially had us reading one chapter a week and then repeating everything we just read during lectures, learned nothing new from him. He was rude and condescending to the students and had a tendency of calling people out in front of everyone.
He is awesome fair expects you to come to class. Gets back to emails on time, really helpful. Love this guy.
Stinson is passionate about film, and if you are too then you should talk to him one on one because he really knows what he's talking about, and promise it will be a great discussion and you'll learn a lot . You can tell he wants to share his knowledge and loves helping people out in whatever way he can.
This class is simple, come everyday, take notes and read the chapters. If you do this you will get an A. He has a midterm, final, and a research paper for grades. He doesn't care too much about grades, so yo can take as long as you want on the tests, and even take it somewhere else. GO TO CLASS. He screens a movie every week. lecture is an hour.
This class was really easy, a midterm, a paper, and the final. He practically gives you the answers on the midterm and you can replace your midterm grade with the grade you get on your final so study to make sure you get an A! He chooses great films and DON'T USE YOUR PHONE IN CLASS, Stinson will flip out.
Great guy, great class, 10/10 recommend
awesome guy- really passionate and wise about film which makes his lectures interesting to sit through. takes roll every class period and dropped if you miss three, but its film... so just go. whole semester to do the paper and 2 finals, really easy class. expected to read the textbook but if you pay any attention during lecture you'll be fine
Professor Stinson's Film Studies 101 course was by far the most enjoyable class I took last fall. Professor Stinson is very friendly and approachable in addition to being interested in the content he teaches. The class is super straightforward, every other meeting there is a movie screening and there are only three assignments the entire semester
An amazing teacher! Very knowledgable and passionate about film! The test's are easy if you read the chapters!
I wish I could take this class again!
super easy class! literally just show up and he will most likely let you go early. he's the nicest guy ever very understanding 10/10
The only thing you do in this class is to sit there and watch movies or listen to short lectures. It's super easy if you want an easy A. If you don't like watching movies, don't take this class lol
any edition of book is fine. download a free pdf. all assignments should be done, especially the research paper. showing up to class is necessary. he is willing to accommodate anyone and everyone to ensure their success. very passionate about his work to the point phones are not allowed in his class. he will send you out if he sees a phone in use.
Attendance matters. Miss too many classes and he'll drop you. Shows you a range of movies, from the worst I've ever seen to the best. Graded by attendance, 2 tests and a paper. I received a B in the class. Not sure if I tested badly, my paper sucked or it was my attendance. I never received a grade back for my paper so I guess I'll never know.
Michael is such an easy teacher. All the reviews are correct. Only thing is show up to class because if you skip more than 3 classes the first month, he'll drop you. He reviews the midterm and final before the test day and basically gives you the answers with the way he phrases the question. Only an idiot would fail this class...
Amazing professor! Attend class(he takes attendance!) Graded: midterm, final, paper & participation. easy if you read the textbook and go to lecture. he basically gives out the answer when reading each question for the midterm/final so watch for that. do not use your phone or he will kick you out. the movies he plays are interesting and now my favs
Really chill guy, you should show up to the classes its not like you're busy with work, you're simply watching films. Enjoy this class, he's flexible for the students not his schedule. I sincerely learned a lot.
3 exams and a paper. Do the paper and show up to class and there should be no reason why anyone should fail. On the day of the exams he reviews for about 30 min and pretty much gives you all the answers during the review. 20 multiple choice questions on each exam. Never read the book, but the exams are mostly based on the book. Easy A.
Professor Stinson made film studies a really enjoyable class. The workload isn't too difficult: there's basically 2 exams, a paper, and then the project for honors. Super chill class and the movies kind of forced you to relax. I enjoyed writing about films throughout the semester and now I haven't seen a movie the same since.
THE WORST PROFESSOR. He is just awful in every way. The movies were unbearable and he was just mean and rude all the time. If you ask a question he makes you feel stupid and he gives no directions on the final paper at all. He barely lectures and then makes the tests insanely hard. Unclear on what he wants and doesn't care about students at all.
I took this Stinson's online Intro to Film class to fill a requirement and because I heard it was an easy class. It turns out that the majority of my time for this class was spent reading the textbook, which I hate doing. There wasn't much instruction from him and I found the lack of due dates and structure to be irritating. Would not take again.
I took this class summer after senior year in high school to get a few credits before enrolling my freshman year. Definitely recommend it, a great first college class! I took this during the summer, while there are weekly write-ups, the workload was light usually just asking you to watch a movie & correlate it to the material you learned.
This class was so frustrating. He rarely sends instructions for the class, his assignments are confusing, hardly uses canvas, and makes his quizzes "0 points" on canvas but apparently adds in the points after the class ends? I was so excited to take this course, and left feeling discouraged about the film industry.
This was a great class to take in the online environment, the assignments are divided by weeks and if you follow the prompt you will get an easy A. The week consists of reading 1 chap. of the book, writing a 250 words report, review the flashcards, respond to students. 1 Midterm and 1 Final. Make sure to read the book and do the assignments Easy A
Mr. Stinson was always available to answer any questions I had. He really cares and is interested in your ideas/work. He also doesn't ask for a ridiculous amount of work to be completed. Very reasonable teacher.
I took this class online Spring of 2021, and it was very poorly organized. Every assignment needed to be turned in in two different places, and the instructions were very unclear. There were incorrect dates listed for due dates that were clearly outdated. I would not recommend taking this class online.
Coolest dude ever. Super intelligent and passionate. He has the utmost experience you can think of in this field and makes the class fun by taking it not too serious. Overall I feel he just wants to share his insight and love for film and it really shows. Class is easy peasy, for sure recommend taking it in person other than online if you can.
Fine for an easy A, but his canvas is pretty confusing and he clearly doesn't read any submissions. You will likely get an A, but you will probably be confused, and not clear on what is actually graded. I took an online class, and there were no recorded lectures or anything, and he stopped making announcements about halfway through.
He just wants students to get an A. Flexible on deadlines, you can turn late work in to the end of the semesters. Lectures are kind of boring, but the workload is so minimal it's worth it. He didn't respond to any email I ever sent him. This class is an easy A, but if you're really interested in film you can get a lot out of it.
I participated in Professor Stinson's study abroad program and he was the perfect professor for this experience. He understands why the students are on the trip and tries to make as much time possible for us to explore our surroundings. We did a lot of analyzing films and writing screening reports.
I was a part of his study abroad group and he was a great professor who was passionate about film. Not focused on grades but rather more on learning about various movies. He cares a lot about his students and their wellbeing and is passionate about helping everyone succeed.
I had Professor Stinson during my study abroad trip and he was such a great teacher to have!! Hes very flexible and engages well with the students with helpful feedback. Would recommend him!
Great class. The learning is not made too abruptly and the subject is made very interesting. The class really changes how you see movies for the better. One of those classes that you regret missing when sick. I would 100% recommend it.
Michael Stinson is a well-dressed, professional and a passionate teacher of film. He is my first choice recommendation for anyone looking to take a chill class in the cinematic arts. He is very easy going and generous with any extra time that students may need to turn in assignments. His lectures are a delight to learn from! Very respectable man!
His film study class is super easy, he is a great teacher very knowledgeable. The only things really graded is online quizes and screening reports on movies plus a final screening report and quiz. Attendance isn't mandatory since everything is turned in online. Textbook is available online for free, hard to find. For readings which are optional.
very creepy. studied abroad with him. He privately made inappropriate comments towards female students , pried students about personal things, and made several sexual references during his lectures. He is very self absorbed for a community college professor, doesn't allow questions, and attempts to intimidate students. yelled at an autistic kid.
Really interesting lectures, and made me think about the way movies were made that I never had before. You have to do 1 screening report every week, a midterm, 1 paper, and a final test. You're not graded on much so if you don't do the assignments even if they're not hard, you'll fail. Doesn't give much feedback for writing which is a downside.
The professor clearly knows what he is talking about without making the lectures boring. Weekly one-page homework assignments, a midterm/final test that he gives the answers for, and a 13-page essay that is the same as the weekly homework but longer. I have already recommended this class to a friend who is taking it next semester. TAKE THIS CLASS
Michael Stinson is a professor who has a clear passion for teaching film. His lectures were very informative, but also fun and engaging (which is impressive considering the size of my class). The movies he screened were super interesting and not what you would expect. Super easy grader and overall a great teacher who I would definitely recommend.
Really interesting and enjoyable. Easy A as long as you do your work which he accepts late.
TAKE THIS CLASS! Prof. Stinson is such an amazing professor that is genuinely passionate about what he does. Once a week there are screen reports which are simple and easy. He encourages you to use Chat GPT to get inspiration on your papers. There is one longer paper due at the end of the semester. No need to buy the textbook if you go to class.
One of the best professors ive had so far in my sbcc experience, very professional and clear instructions.
Super knowledgeable but amazing at making film simple to understand. His passion for film carries over into his teaching in the best way.
Super nice and laid back teacher. One page screening report a week , along with a midterm, final, and final paper which he prepares you for extremely well. We watch a movie in class every other class, and he is always asking students to submit questions to a discussion post every so often because he truly wants his students to succeed
Prof Stinson was awesome. Super easy to talk to and very understanding about assignments. You only have 1 screening report a week which is graded very easily. Goes over every exam before you take it, super fun and easy class. Oh and you also watch a movie every other week, and they are actually good movies.
Prof. Stinson was amazing. We watch a film every other week and go over the midterms and finals together in class. Overall he makes the class very engaging and is always prepared to put on an awesome movie for the class.
He is very understanding and informative. Very engaging, passionate, and takes a big interest in his profession.
Great professor that actually made me interested and engaged in class. Easily graded screening reports that are due every week, but you can submit them as late as you want for FULL credit. Just do not miss lectures, easy A.
He enjoys his job. Very minimal work
Great
Michael is great. In class, all we did is read what we wrote, and he would give very insightful feedback and encourage the class to as well. He recommended us filmmakers, books, and movies to look into based on our style. every assignment I got 100% no matter what Michael really just wants to hear what you write and push you to be great.
Great professor and very funny. He's really kind and wants all his students to do well. I had him in spring for 101 and summer class 173 and both very light workload and super manageable. Would retake if I could
Professor Stinson makes this class engaging and easy. He's passionate about film and his lectures are informative. Assignments are straightforward, and he's generous with late submissions. unstuck AI was a great study tool alongside the textbook.
Stinson is a great guy. He is very caring and compassionate about film. He might be the easiest grader of all time and he also super funny. I recommend t the class if you want a chill class with an easy A.
Basically free credits. Very easy homework, 2 tests (which he gives the answers for in class) & 1 paper. He's a super nice guy that is passionate about film & with extensive experience. A lot of people stop showing up, & it seemed to sadden him. Attendance isn't necessary, but def recommended. The class itself consumes very little time. Take it!
Grading has been good, not very strict, but the films shown in class are very graphic and uncomfortable. There are so many amazing films out there, yet we mainly (for in-class screenings) watch heavily sexual movies. Very creepy. Also, he is very strict on phones; he will call you out in front of class for having it out.
Easiest A of my life. Once a week movie reviews that are fun and easy, online midterms, but if you just show up to class he literally gives you the answers to them, and one 5 page paper for the final that was pretty much just a big movie review. Easy material, very cool and funny guy, would take his class again! Everybody in my class loved him.
i want to die next to a man like him. #needthat (lectures were great also) (changed my life)
Easy A for sure. Once a week page-long film analysis, online midterm and he gives the answers if you show up to class. There's a 4-6 page final paper as well. Pretty easy material and you watch a movie about every other class (though they were questionable lol). Having the book is beneficial for the weekly assignments, but not necessarily needed.
The workload for each week consists of writing a one-page report on any film. It takes about 20 minutes plus just watching a movie once a week. Half the time, the lecture consists of watching a movie for the class period, which you can write a report on. He also gives all the answers for the final before you take it. Impossible not to get an A.
Laid back, super fly, and loves his job; Professor Stinson's Introduction to Film Studies class was my easiest class I took, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS GO TO CLASS! I promise you it's an easy A as long as you're there! One of the best teachers at SBCC! It's literally watching your favorite movies, and connecting it to class. EASY A! GO TO CLASS!
Easiest A ever. You just need to watch movies (which I love anyway) and write about it. You need to write a paper on the film each week which is slightly tricky because you can't use first person, and you can't just explain the plot it's more about the techniques used in the film and the themes. Just attend class and don't be on your phone :)
Take. This. Class. This class is hands down the most ideal GE you can possibly take. He gives you ample resources if your interested in film, he is so passionate about what he teaches, he is very obviously an educated professor and he provides SO much support under circumstances. This class= 0 stress and he keeps it super interesting. take him.
Great intro class! The professor is organized and explains material clearly and gives helpful tips for assignments. Easy grader and allows late work. No detailed feedback but gives general advice to the class. Lectures and textbooks are the main tools. Engaging and easy to follow!
easiest class ive taken at sbcc, most time consuming part was watching the movie (which you get to choose)
