so we're still in the semester, but i had a scheduled mtg w Prof Sury and had to write because he is seriously the best prof ive ever had. hes helped some of us during extra review sessions, he explains how the things we study are actualy used in industry, and his lectures are so amazing. its the one class my friends and i totally look forward to!
One of the best ever. He spends time in class and out of class to help absolutely everyone. His lectures are entertaining and useful and its a plus that hes cute, esp when passionate about the topic. Def recommend him and the class.
Top professor at UT. Prof Sury is the real deal. From Goldman Sachs to his own firm to teaching at other great schools, he talks the talk and walk the walk. I've never seen a prof take as much care to make sure everyone gets the material, even if he has to do a wknd session. He cares about the students, the material, and UT, and it really shows.
This is a hard class and Sury moves fast. Sometimes its too fast. But he also makes up for it by spending a lot of time with any or all students who need it. Lots of review sessions, office hours. He also injects a lot of real world topics in that arent always on the standardized test but are critical outside just this class.
Ive had some great professors at UT, but Sury is absolutely the best by far. Hes engaging, wicked smart, and totally charming. His course is challenging no doubt, but i learned a lot and Id take any course he teaches in the future.
Professor Sury is THE MAN. He knows the material inside and out, hes a Wall St veteran who worked his way up to senior positions at Goldman Sachs and his own investment co. So he brings a real-life vibe into the classroom and it seriously energizes the whole class. Its tough and fast, but its the one course we always looked forward to.
Sury is not only the best prof at McCombs, but also the best ive had across all of UT. Its like soo cool to actually feel like ive learned something new in every class session. Hes always on point, looks sharp, and cares to make each student feel important.
Without a doubt, the best professor ever. Hes interesting, knows his stuff, exciting (yep, exciting), and full of energy. i left every class inspired to keep learning! Think im in love lol. Srsly though, i totally recommend his classes. As other ppl said, youll work hard, but way worth it.
Professor Sury is the best professor at UT, which is really saying something, because UT has some great professors. Sury's class, though is on a whole other level. He's active, gets involved, questions and challenges us, and teaches us not just HOW to solve problems, but also WHY we need to certain strategies and techniques.
The class itself was incredibly fast-paced. However, Sury made sure he was available to students and even held reviews before tests (which no other professors really did). He was pretty active in his teaching, but he was also really arrogant.
Surys class was probably the most fast paced and difficult Ive had so far at UT, but it was also the one where I learned the most. He was able to take complex ideas and relate them to us. Im not a math person so his ability to give us the intuition behind things was always helpful. And as someone else wrote, the review sessions were awesome.
Without a doubt absolutely the best prof ever. Hes wicked smart, funny, and totally oviously cares for the students. i wish he was teaching more than just Fin 357.
I got a job offer from a major bank in NYC today, and that was thanks to Sury! I took FIN 357 late (I'm not a finance major), I found the material hard. Knowing I was a senior, Sury took special care to help me in office hours, not giving up on me even when I was depressed. I ended up with a B, and a having new respect for profs who truly care.
Professor Sury is an amazing teacher and totally truly inspiring. He totally changed my views on learning and its honestly had a huge impact on my college life. I hope he will teach 367 or another elective next semester.
FIN357 is a tough class. BUT Sury really made the information easily understandable in class. His lectures are long (don't expect to get out early) and he cold calls students reguarly but you leave the class understanding the material. And he always makes class entertaining and applicable to real life. HIGHLY recommend!!!! Best FIN327 prof!!!
Sury is amazing, he knows what he is talking about and he has the hands-on experience in the market, which makes his lecturers really engaging and interesting.
Surys class is the best. Ive learned more in this course than any other Ive taken at UT. Completely recommend him.
Fin 357 is a hard class in general, but Sury makes the content enjoyable and easy to understand. He brings real world experience and connects with the material. He talks fast in class, but he will slow down and explain it in more detail. Honestly, I only took this class to fufill a core requirement, but I'm now contemplating a minor in Finance.
Sury is terrific. Incredibly knowledgeable about finance and peppers in hints and tips for interviews or daily work from his personal experience. On the downside, he talks really fast and skips over information. But this information is often not in the tests and his review sessions are amazing. His explanations are crisp and useful
Professor Sury is by far one of the best profs at UT. Totally agree with other reviewers: he is fast and at times will cover material that's a bit ahead of where we are -- in return, you get an amazing learning experience. His review sessions are also legend at McCombs. His pairing of real world with the theory makes it all come alive. Thumbs up.
This man is a god and legend, he is by far one of the best lectures in McCombs. FIN 357 is not the easiest class but Sury is able to break down the class in a clear and comprehensive manner that makes the class a walk in the park. So long as you read the book and practice before the tests you should be fine.
FIN 357 is a hard class for almost everyone but Sury makes it doable. His test averages are consistently higher than those of the other professors. He holds in depth review sessions before every exam and makes himself available for additional office hours for anyone who needs it. He is an amazing professor with a gift for teaching. Take his class!!
Prof. Sury is by far the most inspirational teacher Ive ever had. His passion for the subject and for teaching is totally evidenced in class. Corp Fin can be a difficult/complex course, and youll have to put in the work, but youll master the subject if you take Surys class.
If you want to excel, take Professor Surys class. Nothing against the other prof I was registered with, but Prof. Sury just took it to another level. Tons of examples, stories from the real world and the financial industry, interview tips, etc. Surys passion for finance is actually pretty hot. ;)
FIN357 is a VERY difficult course, but Sury is incredible!!!!! As a professor, you can count on his lectures & review sessions breaking things down into manageable pieces. As a person, he will take the time to get to know your name, create/work through problems for you, and unite your class. And as a comedian (his missed calling), he's great too.
Professor Sury is the best prof in the business school by far. He brings real world experience combined with the theory that makes the material really become relevant. Sometimes he'll go off on a tangent, but its usually in order to bring in an example relating to how we might use the material in the real world. Def take any class he teaches.
Best prof I've ever had. Knows his stuff. Cares about students. Always willing to give a hand and help. You can tell he loves finance.
Class was a little disorganized but that might be bc it was Sury's first time teaching 374. However, he's an awesome, entertaining professor who goes to great extents to help students and clearly cares a ton about making you learn. Assignments are lengthy but fairly assessed and definitely give you real world application skills. Very useful course!
Sury is a great teacher and goes the extra mile to make sure that students appreciate, understand and can apply advanced material. The course was difficult and challenging, but I learned a lot and in fact it helped me land an internship on Wall St. for this summer. The interviewer was actually impressed with what I'd learned just from this class.
AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING. The best prof at UT. The guy is an expert in finance, has a great sense of humor, and goes the extra mile to help students learn. His sections are tougher than others, but I came through knowing way more than friends in other sections. My friends are jealous Im in Surys section and they arent. If you can get in, do it!
The best professor at UT and it's not even close. Insanely smart guy and a great lecturer. I never thought I would actually look forward to going to school before taking this class. Although the class averages are higher than others, it is so worth it. Do yourself a favor and take Sury. You will not regret it.
Sury was obviously very successful in the field and brings his industry knowledge to the classroom, which makes it much more relatable and understandable. Sometimes he goes through material very fast, but he's good about keeping the discussion very relaxed and is always open to answering questions. His sections consistently score highest on exams.
Totally one of the best. Im not a finance major but Ive considered switching to it after his class. He makes the material come alive, keeps the class involved, and it doesnt hurt that hes charming and cute. I rarely missed class. :)
By far the best course Ive ever taken. This man is awesome. Just for example, I learned more in just 3 class sessions than I learned in a whole semester in another course totally dedicated to that particular topic. Hes that good and also makes everything click together so we understand the big picture and the why behind what were learning.
Sury is one of the best professors I have taken at UT. His real world experience combined with the way he conducts his class makes every lecture engaging and interesting. The material is also very useful.
Sury is a gem of a professor. If you are interested in IB or other related fields, taking his valuation class will help you learn topics that are extremely applicable to real life. His lectures were informative but not overwhelming. Also, he is very understanding and truly wants students to succeed.
I took Business Finance with Professor Sury during the Fall 2019 semester. Professor Sury has made big bucks trading derivatives and working Private Equity at Goldman Sachs, and the depth of his knowledge shows. He throws you a lot information during lecture, but is also goes out of his way to help students who are struggling.
Great professor. While not a finance major, I actually really enjoyed going to class and learning about finance fundamentals. Would definitely recommend him, I don't think it makes much of a difference grade wise since its a standardized course but he will do his best to make sure you get the material.
Simply the best. Sury is one of those profs you actually look forward to and love to watch. He has such high energy and is so into making sure that the class knows the theory AND the application. Awesome to have a great teacher who also has really deep experience to draw on.
Prof. Sury is outstanding! He has totally turned me on to finance and made me more aware of the business world around me. I directly credit his courses for getting me a position on Wall Street, where my recruiter was impressed with my ability to discuss valuation, financial markets, and the impact of current events. I learned all that from Sury.
Middle Office Goldman Sachs Rockstar!
Pretty easy class but he makes attendance part of your grade. Not a terrible professor you can tell he tries really hard, He just does everything too fast.
AVOID
Really isn't well structured like most courses with powerpoint slides based off lecture. He saves everything for the review sessions. Grade distributions are actually pretty bad.
Dont take
Other professors are better.
The tests this semester were rough. Not a class I look forward to or enjoy.
The entries below look like one person went on a rant. Spring 2020 was the first time this class was online, give him a break. I took this class soph year and learned so much. I think Sury is one of the best professors for this class because he is very thorough! He goes over any topic until his students understand. Lots of work but you learn a ton.
Hes not as good as some people exaggerate him to be. Go ask a few students whove had him.
The classes he teaches should be more standardized across professors. He liked me because I asked questions for the sake of asking them. You can tell he cares ALOT.
Didnt explain certain concepts and explained others ad nauseum.
Best McCombs professor by far. Take the advice and ask any student in the class, hes awesome.
Professor Sury is an amazing professor who ties course concepts with real world applications. The lectures were engaging and he helps you understand the math and reasoning behind your answers. Sury's office hours were super helpful in going over lectures and talking about careers, investments, or current events. Favorite professor in college.
If you want to get into banking or consulting take Sury. His course is more difficult but more than half the class got As my semester. Pushes you to do well.
One of the most caring teachers at UT. He genuinely wants you to succeed in life and in the class. Also very humble even with all the success and accolades he's had.
Professor Sury is undoubtedly one of the best professors in finance-based academia, let alone McCombs. He explains intricate finance concepts really well, and will always stop if someone is even slightly confused. He also peppers in his industry knowledge to explain current market movements and give students tips for interviews. TAKE HIS CLASS.
Absolutely the best course and professor Ive ever had. Totally cares how we are doing and goes out of his way to make sure we learn and understand.
Prof Sury is one of the best professors I have had in McCombs. He is quite tough and may seem a bit intense. However, he cares so much about his students and will spend countless hours every week in office hours discussing the market, giving career advice, and helping us prep for interviews (he helped me land one!!). Absolutely take his class.
Super patient and helpful with class concepts and professional development. He has high standards but goes out of his way to help you succeed. Can be hard to reach over email but accessible at office hours. Best prof ever!
By far the best prof Ive ever had. Hes inspiring and confident and knows his stuff but at same time really cares and takes our success personally. I totally adore him.
Super cool, super smart, super nice. No doubt the class is challenging, but its a difficult subject and thats why investment bankers make the money they do. You want to learn from the best, take Sury.
Professor Surys Valuation course was the best course I have ever taken. Detailed, lots of theory but also lots of application. Its a challenging course with a lot of math though.
Surys Financial Analytics class is the hardest class Ive taken and yet I love it. Lots of theory, tons of math, but always applicable to real world.
This guy is the best. He def cares about his students. He held like 3 different review sessions just to make sure he could accommodate all of us. Then he made an extra lecture video for those that still needed help. Thats what a great teacher does. And hes wicked smart.
Favorite prof & favorite course! Added bonus: hes hot and his passion and enthusiasm for finance just add to it.
This was a grad course that we took to prep us for the rest of the MSBA curriculum. It was an awesome introduction to financial analytics and covered a lot of quant/math/matrix optimization, statistics, and of course finance. All on Zoom, and very helpful. Great teacher.
By far, the best professor I have ever had. You can tell that he loves finance and loves teaching. The material is tough, but Sury goes out of his way to be available and help every single student.
Before I took this class I wasnt sure if I wanted to do Finance or switch to MPA, but his teaching showed me I was in the right place. He makes everything really interesting because he cares about it and will even throw in some interview/recruiting tips for people who want to work as analysts. Take this class whether you're accounting or finance.
One of the best professors in UT I have ever met. Very successful person himself in finance and economics, he managed to convey practical knowledge very clearly and in detail to students. Required a lot of efforts though, but if you tried to follow him all the way, which he strived to help us to do across the semester, you would learn a ton
Best class Ive ever taken. Definitely hard, but you get tons out of it. Covers both theory and practical and emphasizes how to use the theory in real world. That was most helpful to me.
A truly great professor who cares about his students learning. He can move quickly, but always starts each class with a quick review of the material from the previous class. I wish I could take more of his classes
Without a doubt Sury is the best professor Ive had at UT. The course has a ton of theory/math but he always shows us why it matters and demonstrates how it will be used. Highly recommend.
Professor Sury is an amazing lecturer who really cares about teaching relevant, applicable concepts. It is a hard class, but he gives hints occasionally about what specifically will be on exams/he gives a lot of partial credit. Would love to have him as a professor again- I thoroughly enjoyed my semester
Prof. Sury is definitely a character, one who not everyone will like. I found him quite enjoyable though. What cannot be disagreed on is that Sury is very practical and efficient with what he teaches. Much of the finance curriculum at UT feels overly academic and useless. Not this class. Pretty difficult, not a blow-off class, but I recommend it.
Sury is an AMAZING lecturer and really cares for his students. He will tell you everything you need to know for tests. I asked Sury the night before a valuation interview if he would help me prepare and he made time to prep me. I couldn't have gotten the job without him! Come to class, take good notes, and TAKE SURY'S CLASS! He's worth it!
By far one of the best faculty at UT. Highly recommend his class if you want to be prepared for the real world.
By far my favorite class and professor at UT. Wish he could teach all my finance classes. Could not recommend the class enough, you will definitely be more prepared for the real world.
The best course at UT. I've learned more in one course than in the rest of my major. It's is quant heavy and a lot of Excel model building but it's exactly the training that preps for a career.
GREAT professor! Very knowledgeable and knows his stuff in and out. Class itself isn't hard to get an A, he has 7 projects that take some time that's due every weekend. His exams are very heavily weighted but aren't hard. He gives you a study guide with concepts you need to know and your test will be on excel simpler version of the homework.
Fantastic prof. Great lectures. Was in MSF version. Pitched at right difficulty, insanely knowledgeable and experienced in the real world. Great to talk to. Highly recommend both as a prof and as a person.
Professor Sury is one of the rare and dedicated professors you find in business schools. He is an industry expert with a deep curiosity for financial markets and makes sure to teach his students all they need to be successful. The exams can be somewhat challenging, but if you pay attention in class and actually engage, you will be fine.
Professor Sury is awesome! He explains tough finance concepts in a way that actually makes sense and always make class interesting. Super approachable and helpful. This is definitely one of the best classes I've taken at either McCombs or my school back home! (I am an international student).
Awesome prof! Super knowledgable and experienced. Tons of work applicable for my career (consulting). Projects and exams can be hard at times but shoutout to my TA Kenji! Super understanding and genuine person and lowk carried me through the course, love u king!
This is the ideal professor that you'd want as a finance major at McCombs. He's incredibly knowledgeable but will meet you at your level by breaking complex and technical questions down in class. Lectures always flew by, and I never felt like any of them were a waste of time. Excel exams are definitely complex, but the material prepares you well.
Professor Sury is incredibly knowledgeable and his lectures are very useful. The class is graded on seven group projects and two exams. He breaks down various financial/technical concepts important for any finance careers, which makes the class interesting. Paying attention in lectures prepares you to do well in the class. He is a great professor!
