Swenson is great. He is a super nice guy and makes marketing seem interesting. Good lectures and awesome guest speakers. Quizzes are easy and there are only 4 assignments, but make sure to do them. Tests are decently hard, but not too bad.
Swenson is a great guy, but I didn't love the class. I'm sure the class is great for marketing major, but I was bored. Attendance is definitely optional because everything important is in the myeducator book.
Most people disregard this class because it's significantly easier than the other business pre-reqs. Hard exams. Swenson's hilarious but it's easy to fall asleep in lecture. Study the review slides in-depth and make sure you know each bullet point on the end-of-chapter slides. Follow the instructions on the written assignments and you'll get 100%.
This class is fine. If you do all the reading, study the vocab, and study the slides, and don't miss the guest speakers, you'll do fine on the tests. Class lectures are sub-par and really long, but sometimes he throws in fun videos that make going to class worthwhile.
He is a funny guy, but his lectures last the whole class. No involvement of the students at all, so just don't go to class tired or you WILL fall asleep. He posts all the slides, so you would probably get more out of it just studying the slides and doing the homework rather than going to class. The homework/reading helps and his tests are easy
BusM 241 was an amazing class. I loved it! Some of the best lectures ever, and Dr. Swenson is a great guy! He isn't the most helpful only due to the class size, but the TA's are great. I had such a great time. The class might lull you into thinking you're doing great, but don't sleep on the exams. Overall, fantastic class.
Awesome teacher. Straightforward class. Easy content.
Tests aren't super hard but you definitely have to study for quite a bit if you want to get an A. Class is kind of pointless a lot of the time. Sometimes it's interesting, other times you're watching the clock. Tests are the biggest determinant of your grade. Also 4 pretty easy "Do-marketing" assignments. Easy quizzes before almost each class.
Lot of memorization. Brother Swenson is awesome. Really really great guy. If you put the time in you will do well.
Swenson knows his stuff and you can really learn a lot about the marketing mindset from the class. Most of the time I was wondering why I came to class that day: not very useful. I think flash cards would be tremendously helpful for those who doesn't memorize things easily. It's not all memorization, though, the tests make you apply concepts.
His class is interesting. Take notes or at least make sure you pay attention to the in class examples. You have a chapter to read an a quiz just about every class period so twice a week. There are 4 assignments. 2 Midterms and a Final with the option for extra credit. Don't take it too lightly but it's nothing to stress over.
Class consists of forever long lectures and readings with accompanying quizzes before everyclass period. I stopped going to class after the first test because all we did was watch videos. I really would have liked to have learned more. Study the slides, the preclass quizzes, and the textbook readings, and you'll kill the tests. Silly class, really.
Professor Swenson has probably been my favorite teacher at BYU ever!!!! His classes are fun and he knows what he is teaching! I would recommend this class whither you need it or not. As long as you pay attention in class and review the myeducator stuff you should get an easy A. Take this class!
PROFESSOR SWENSON IS AMAZING. He is clear about what needs to be done in the class. His presentations are clear and filled with videos and pictures. He is personable. His homework assignments aren't crazy and they are really beneficial. The way he teaches is natural and fun. He's the best ever.
His class was honestly a little dry and boring. The tests are easy, but your grade depends on the TA's.
I made the mistake of taking this class too lightly, after hearing it is an easy A. So now I am playing catch up a little bit after not doing as well as I wanted on the second exam. Good lectures, pretty straightforward format, just dedicate some time to it and you will be fine. Sometimes the lectures do get boring, but he is an awesome professor.
He gives legendary lectures and he reminds you of upcoming assignments and exams.
He is good at explaining concepts in class. Class is not mandatory because you have to complete the quiz before you come to class, so if you have questions, go. The online textbook is because you submit assignments in on there and thats where all the readings are so definitely buy it. He is clear on what he wants you to do.
Well organized class with straightforward lectures, assignments and tests. Even though the class is massive and there's very limited oppurunity for individual interaction, Dr. Swenson provides interesting examples and makes the class worth-wild.
Teach yourselves the concepts, they are a little confusing on the slides. TA' grade the written assignments.
The class almost seems like an online class. Swenson basically reviews the textbook that you read for the lecture but he also used an App to see who is ac his lectures and gives a grade based on that which I didn't like (especially because I work a lot and would miss the first 10 mins of class, when attendance is recorded). Not very interactive.
I took him 2 years ago and it was one of my favorite classes at BYU! Midterm comes from reading and lectures, so go to class is important. :D What's going on with the bad rating, he is so great. He ven puts music at the beginning of class ^^
Get ready to listen to lectures all semester. It is extremely difficult to pay attention and getting a good grade on the test comes down to you reading the book attentively. Very poor class, unfortunately if you want to go into business you have to take this class. Definitely worse than the other business prerequisites.
This class is a waste of time and needs SERIOUS reworking. I have never taken a test that was as heavily dependent on remembering arbitrary and irrelevant phrases and terms before. The level of pointlessness is inappropriate for a university education. It is all common sense material that requires hours of exam studying to remember random terms.
Really stupid class. Questions on tests are purposely ambiguous so that not everyone gets 100. Material is really simple. The tests are literally just vocabulary tests. Just straight up memorize the ridiculous terms and youll get an A. Booooooooooooring. Learned nothing
Prof Swenson is an entertaining lecturer... sometimes very funny. But the class was ridiculous. He lectures on EXACTLY what you read and got quizzed on, so I felt like it was a waste of time to go to class; you get attendance points. Tests were common sense but w/ vocab you don't know, so they require hours of studying. Bad class, good professor.
Professor Swenson is a great teacher! The lectures are super interesting and I love going to class.
The class is super straightforward. Do the short readings, come to class and take notes. The test questions are pulled from the reading, the lecture slides, and the homework quizzes. It's mostly just basic memorization, but Swenson makes it interesting. The tests can be difficult because how similar the answers are. You need to know the details
I skipped class often because he posts the slides online and all the reading is online too, however by doing this you miss out on a lot of in class examples that are on the test. He makes the class really fun and exciting with examples to help you remember things. If you pay attention, read, and show up, it'll be a breeze.
Offers extra credit (1% boost). He gives FANTASTIC LECTURES! The material may seem really straight forward and self explanatory at first, but the tests are quite ambiguous sometimes. Just be careful and you'll be fine. The only complaint I had about this class were the TAs. They were AWFUL. Graded papers late, didn't know material, grade typos etc.
Some reading and a quiz before nearly every class. Lecture is entertaining but not necessary, I always did homework during the class. Tests are confusing, you have to remember a lot of the random terms he uses. The TA system is awful, hard to access and not very helpful. I liked learning but felt frustrated with the class.
The reading that's due pre-class is the exact same material that is gone over in class. Lectures are pretty useless, save for a few things that isn't covered in lectures. If you're cruising through the quizzes, then you should do fairly well on the exams. They're fairly self-explanatory, and quite easy if you're familiar with the material.
Easily my favorite class last semester. The tests weren't difficult if you studied hard. The information wasn't terrible and the way that Dr. Swenson presents it was entertaining. I found myself excited to go to class and was sad if I had to skip.
Swenson is alright, the lectures were pretty boring because he basically just restates everything you read about in the book but you have to go to class if you want the participation points. His tests are a bunch of definitions and abstract terms so if you study basically everything from every chapter you should do fine.
Professor Swenson is kind and nice. I love having lecture taught by him! He gives lots of good/hilarious examples during class to make the hard concepts more memorable for me.
Professor Sweson is nice and kind. BUT SOME TAs ARE AWFUL. I got all A on midterms and final but I ended up with A- because of the assignments grades I got. TA graded them without any principle. They took out points for no reason. One time I was deducted 20 points without any reason and feedback.
I loved Swenson! He's hilarious and his lectures are so much fun. He lets you take notes on your laptop, and is incredibly patient, although finish all assignments and turn them in on time!
Professor Swenson is great. Class is pretty straightforward. Do the quizzes, assignments, show up to class, and study for the test and you'll do great. The videos and examples in class help keep things interesting.
Class was boring and basically repeated the reading (which we had to do for an online quiz before class.) But you have to come to class because he asks questions in class that you have to answer for participation. (Not through iClickers, that would be too convenient.) Tests were very focused on vocabulary. Absolutely no late work accepted.
Professor Swenson's class was so easy. I went to class about half the time (just log in to top hat at home and answer the questions), spent very little time on the assignments, and his tests were easy. If you know the material in the slides and myeducator, you'll do fine on the test.
Take this class! Take this professor! I ended up getting a B even though I worked hard just because the exams are weighted heavily, but honestly this class changed my life. He is the best professor ever. Super inspirational and easy going and friendly. I highly recommend this class, I almost switched my major because of him.
I did not like how this class was structured in that you do your readings before class then you come to class and he just goes over the same exact material that you read but this time he drags it out for 75 min. There aren't complex things in this class so i guess that's why he probably doesnt have too much to help us understand. It was okay..
Hilarious and entertaining lecturer. Always shows commercials in class. Very personable professor and always posts slides. Tests are straight forward. significant amount of reading every week with easy reading quiz. There are a few longer assignments in a semester but they are very simple.
I really enjoy this class and Professor Swenson is knowledgeable and humorous. I have learned a lot bout the marketing form this class.
Professor Swenson is not a very good professor in my opinion. He doesn't offer any help for the students. Its almost impossible to get ahold of him which is understandable since theres 800+ students in the class but he puts no effort into communicating back with the students. The TA's always seem annoyed when you ask them a question.
If this is what Marketing is at BYU, then that's very sad. Usually they have the best teachers teach the intro classes to lure people into their program, but this class was a joke. You won't learn much, and you'll get a mediocre grade because the tests are related on information not covered in class. Condescending teacher, and a joke of a textbook.
Look, Prof. Swenson is a good guy and really knows his stuff. However, I did not like the way this class was administered. Basically you study a chapter of the textbook he wrote the day before class and take an online quiz (very easy). Then, you get to class and he repeats everything you read and were tested on the day before.
Here's the deal, study Prof Swenson's in class slides before tests, that's your best way of preparing. He throws in random test questions from something he mentioned briefly in a lecture so make sure you review his slide. He's funny and the class is fairly easy if you study. Also do as much extra credit as you can.
Very interesting lectures. Shows a lot of funny commercials in class.
The class was pretty boring and I feel like Professor Swenson put very little effort into it. He is a funny guy, but the principles in this class are so basic that you learn almost nothing. The work load is light, but there the tests are long and a little difficult. He asks some obscure things so you really need to pay attention in class.
This class was super interesting! It's a great business overview class with a slight emphasis in marketing. The class has a easy quiz due before each class, 4 projects that are quick, 2 midterms, and the final. Go the TA reviews and the tests are pretty easy. He posts his slides but going to class is important to get all of his info and attendence
Professor Swenson may be one of the most caring large-lecture professors at BYU. However, this class is pretty much just a vocabulary class. If this class provided decent review materials for the tests rather than providing a single poorly executed TA review session, this class would be a cake walk. Take good notes on lectures and the book.
Swenson has been my favorite professor so far! His classes were fun, engaging, and he always used funny examples that helped to retain the content because it made me laugh. He is always willing to help, reply emails, and he knew my name in a class of 600 students! I love this professor and I totally recommend taking this class from him!
Swenson is great, hilarious teacher! Shows lots of funny ads in class, and pretty straight-forward content. He does a Top Hat poll every class, which counts towards your grade, so show up! The reading is basically his lecture, but not too bad. Go through the class and review slides before the midterms and finals. It's a lot of memorizing terms.
10/10 would retake Swenson's class. He shows his faith in all his lectures and has a fun personality. Though he lectures, he makes it fun and worth coming. The points/ reading quizzes are very straightforward. Study hard for exams and be careful on projects! The points add up. Do the SONA extra credit, even if you don't think you'll need it.
A great teacher who does his best to keep lectures interesting. Overall, the class was great, assignments and tests weren't too hard, and I felt like I learned a lot.
Professor Swenson's marketing class was one of the highlights of my semester. He doesn't make the course material difficult, but helps you understand the basics of business. Use the textbook a lot and refer to his lecture slides when preparing for exams and you'll do fine.
Swenson is THE BEST! Very caring. This class is honestly very reasonable. Just read the chapter as assigned & youll be fine! For the tests you just need to know the slides that he puts on Learning Suite!
Expect a lot of tangents from Professor Swenson. This course is not streamlined by any means, so students should expect to navigate their way through information that doesn't matter. He makes marketing unnecessarily complicated. Also, be careful when he takes attendance and make sure your program is updated before class starts.
Dr. Swenson is a really swell guy. His class is fun and informative. The tests are pretty specific though and I never really know what to study so that's a bit annoying.
Easy A. This class is a joke. I never did the reading. CTRL F is all you need to get 10/10 on the pre class quizzes. Just search a quizzlet flashcard set before the exam. Pump that through your head for 1-2hrs and you'll get a B or higher on the exams. 15 minutes of effort on the projects100%. The guy's ego is taller than the SWKT tho.
Super funny guy. Very laid back. Lots of ad clips, entertaining class!! Tests aren't too bad, study! Uses TopHat. 2 Online quizzes every week, 4 easy other assignments. SONA Lab for extra credit. 2 midterms, 1 final. Fairly easy overall, expect an A-B if you put in a decent amount of effort. He loves IKEA.
Swenson is a good man. He knows his stuff. He's not very involved with students on an individual level in this course.
Professor Swenson is great, he teaches according to the textbook, but he brings in amazing guest speakers and has interesting examples. Im not a marketing major but I liked his class
Wasn't horrible, but a lot bothered me. Lectures repeat the textbook-tons of information that is "no duh", but you have to remember random tidbits. No dropped attendance grades. Virtually nonexistent syllabus. TAs aren't consistent in availability or grading. Waste of time and money, but, unfortunately, I think he's the only option.
Swenson's classes are very entertaining. They are easy to stay engaged in, but dont have too much fun because the tests include little comments or remarks that were mentioned ONE TIME during one of his lectures. His ten minute (timed) bi-weekly quizzes are impossible if you don't do your reading ahead of time. Take notes during class!
Professor Swenson's course is not very efficient. In class he reads off of powerpoints containing the same information found in the reading, and attendance is required for points. Some lectures felt like a waste of time. However, there are some really cool guest speakers and the class isn't overwhelming.
Honestly had the hardest time getting myself to go to class. The presentations are so dry and all he does is read off the powerpoints which are posted. Watch out for how many times he says "Value" in a lecture, it's a bit ridiculous. Good guy, just not the teaching style for me.
Swenson is a good professor and teaches the material well. His lectures can be boring, but it can be important to listen just in case he tests you on small details. Other than that, if you put in 2 hours (max) outside of class each week, you will do fine. Very easy A if you do well on the tests, which aren't hard if you can memorize the slides.
You can tell he knows what he is talking about. His lectures were interesting and educating. I also left his class feeling excited to be apart of the business world. The readings were not that bad. If you do the readings, pay attention in class, and study for the exams, you will earn an A.
cool teacher but will never round up your grade and the lectures are fun but the tests are hard
I would recommend taking BUSM 241 from Prof. Swenson. If you listen in class and use the slides to study, you'll do fine. Exams are okay if you study, but the class work is easy and kind of interesting. Wasn't the easiest class I have taken, but he definitely makes it doable! TA test reviews helped a little too.
Really charming guy. The tests are fairly simple and it is easy to get an A in this class. Show up to the lectures. The readings are nice but I would say optional. He provides extensive study guides before exams. The lectures are interesting and his examples are really cool. Nike Exec. came and presented on the Summer Olympics in Rio and marketing.
Marketing is not the most exciting subject in the world. Professor Swenson does an amazing job of taking something that could be incredibly boring and makes it engaging. This course is a ton of memorizing things- nothing too hard. It is all pretty intuitive- but I enjoyed this course BECAUSE of Swenson. He is entertaining, funny, and engaging.
They mis-graded my attendance. When I emailed about it, I got no response from him or the TA's. Because of this, I received a B instead of a B+. The graphs/pictures he puts up are confusing, and he never taught anything useful about marketing. It would've been a great class if it was better organized and taught by a better teacher.
Not too hard of a class but I learned a ton about marketing. Go to class, enjoy some jokes and a good lecture- do the homework and quizzes- study a little for his midterms and you will get a good grade. I have had way harder classes. He does a good job at challenging you, not overwhelming you.
This is my second time taking MKTG (formerly BUSM 241). The TAs can be difficult graders, so take your 4 writing/do marketing assignments in before submitting. No late work accepted! Swenson is a fun lecturer, and makes a 75 minute class less terrible. If you spend a couple hours studying, you'll crush the exams. Open note biweekly quizzes, too!
You have to go to class to get the points from tophat. Sometimes the lectures are really fun with good videos. You don't really need to pay attention too much though. It is possible to just to go through all the slides right before the tests and still do well. Overall, it wasn't too bad.
Professor Swenson has a great sense of humor and makes class entertaining. The class follows the textbook closely, so you get great exposure to material. Lots of memorization, I would just create flash cards along the way. Tests made up a large percentage of your grade but weren't that hard. My only complaint was his heavy usage of powerpoints.
He is a great professor at teaching, inspiring, and entertaining and has a lot of connections, so he brings in a number of guest speakers. He uses TopHat to force you to come to class for credit, and on the Midterm and Final he will slip in some things he taught in class, so pay attention. Tests a lot on application. MKTG 201 has 1% Extra Credit.
The difficulty in this class was staying motivated to do the work. That is not because the material is difficult or discouraging in nature. In my opinion, it is just so boring. You memorize countless lists of marketing principles. Honestly, it feels like the 17 chapters you study could be reduced to 4 as it's very repetitive and intuitive.
Do not underestimate this class!! At first I thought this class was a joke but the second midterm was actually super hard!! I got an 82% and that basically ended up keeping me from an A in the class. Just study hard for every test and do all the extra credit and youll be fine.
Professor Swenson is my favorite professor I've had so far. He is such a great guy and makes class so much fun. It does stink though the amount of text book information there is, that is all very similar so it's hard to remember information sometimes, you really have to memorize. There are few assignments worth a lot of points.
First time taking a marketing class and I found that I love and enjoy it! Swenson is awesome. He's not only great in his field, but a good teacher as well. He's funny, interesting, and engaging. I read the textbook all the way through just because I found it interesting. Got a B+ on every exam, homework is all easy A's. Take Swenson, he's great!
The class itself is not very difficult, nor is there much homework. I got a 98% on the first test and like everyone did much worse on the second test so I would recommend really studying hard for the second test. Get TA to look over each project before turning it in. Mostly graded by tests. Cram and memorize all powerpt slides b4 tests and ur good
Boring lectures but not a hard class. Participation quizzes each class and tests aren't too bad.
Professor Swenson does a really good job with his lectures. I found his class very enjoyable, and it made marketing interesting for me. Even though he has many students, he does really care about each student. When I needed help with something, he was very understanding and helpful.
Dr. Swenson is a great teacher, even if this class does feel absolutely pointless most of the time. The reading and the lectures cover the exact same topics almost verbatim, so if you take notes on one you don't need to on the other. Study a little bit and you'll get an A. Swenson at least makes a boring class entertaining. Guest speakers are dope.
Swenson is a good man. He teaches well, though the class isn't always terribly interesting. Lots of stuff on the test comes from the lectures and the online textbook. There's a few assignments that help you understand your favorite brands, not too hard.
I loved Swenson as a teacher. Marketing itself was a bit dry, but he makes the class fun where he can! Great guest lecturers, fun videos, etc... Grade is based on reading quizzes, 4 assignments, 2 midterms, & final. 5% of grade is in-class attendance quizzes (participation only). Swenson is a kind & good teacher. I'd recommend him for this class.
Swenson is great! You have a reading quiz due before each class period, 2 midterms throughout the semester, 4 or 5 application assignments (which are annoying, but manageable). When a test is open class is cancelled that day. He takes attendance through online polling. Really funny dad jokes. Not too bad of a class. Take MKTG 201 from him!!
Professor Swenson Is absolutely horrible. He is a nice guy but that doesn't make him a good professor. His powerpoints are extremely confusing. He requires 0 participation in class when you look around in class everyone is either sleeping or on social media or playing a game. He made a very simple class into a complete joke not conducive to learn.
Prof. Swenson is a really nice guy, but frankly his class structure is horrible. His lectures are fun but worthless and the class is unbarably easy until you get to the tests which are filled with VERY subjective questions. This is the easiest class I ever took that gave me my worst grade. Teaches no marketing with lots of marketing vocab.
Professor Swenson was very disorganized with his lectures and presentations. I had a difficult time studying for tests. The power points are hard to look through and I felt like the reading did more for me than the lectures. It is class with a lot of definitions. Very nice professor.
Goes through material fast to go over long and boring examples. Concepts aren't differentiated well and can be very similar, they also often seem made up or common sense. Lectures are kind of boring and drawn out.
Lectures are redundant of what you were supposed to read the night prior. But, you can tell that Swenson puts a lot of thought and preparation into his ppt's. He really cares about his students & their success. The tests were fairly easy and straight forward. He makes a lot of dad jokes. Really great guy! 4 Assignments & Quizzes before each class.
Swenson is hilarious and chill. His tests are kind of lame, he makes them tricky because the material is so easy to understand, which wasn't my favorite. But he's chill. Also, I was one of the only people who laughed out loud at his jokes, but I personally cracked up. If you have a good sense of humor, you'll like him.
Good sense of humor and great ads made the class enjoyable. Seemed like we were always a little behind in lecture, but this gave us a chance to review material from the previous reading and quiz. Exams aren't as straight forward as the lectures; be sure NOT to read into any of the questions and choose the best answer. Marketing's cool.
Prof. Swenson is a good man. I like him as a person and professor, but I honestly felt like marketing was useless. Most of what you have to learn is terms, which is the test. I don't feel like there was any application in this class. His class is also really unstructured, which makes it hard to know what you actually need to study. 1% extra credit.
Swenson makes marketing interesting. Some of the topics in this class are a little dry, so that got boring, but he overall he keeps things entertaining. This class is pretty run of the mill, but watch out for the four assignments and make sure to go to the TA lab to double check those. His exams can be a little tricky too. Stand up guy though.
While the material is easy, it is sometimes tough to know what is on the test because he is not always clear as to what is important and what is just entertainment. Good professor though.
Dr. Swenson is a pretty chill guy. I didn't love his teaching style, but teaching to a giant class is always tough. I did better in all of the other business pre-reqs because they have clearer expectations on tests. The mktg tests vary in difficulty quite a bit, which was a little frustrating. Got an A- but spent like 30 min a week studying :)
Swenson does what he can to make this a fun class. Marketing 201 is not the most exciting class, but he fills lecture with fun videos & makes it entertaining. The class is fairly simple if you study off his slides. You can't slack off, but it isn't too hard. Swenson is a good professor & you can tell he cares. He brings good guest lecturers too!
Funny guy
He is really funny and is a really cool guy. He's pretty clear on what he wants you to know. The midterm was not hard, all multiple choice. I would totally recommend him. We had a few guest speakers from big companies like Nike come in. Amazing class.
Professor Swenson is a solid pick for MKTG241. His class is lecture heavy, but the tests are reasonable. If you read the book and understand the material, you can actually get by without going to class, but the lectures are interesting enough that you probably won't feel the need to ditch them. Professor Swenson is famous for referencing IKEA.
Classes are a little long, but they do enhance your concept understanding. He gives so many examples of good/bad marketing, hence why classes can be a little long/boring. He's a good guy. Getting an A is pretty easy if you study the textbook. Bungeelink is used to track attendance-takes forever to load. He is impatient. Only gives 1 min to answer.
Lectures are long but enjoyable because of his sense of humor and the way they are structured. Bunjeelink questions for attendance. Four different large assignments and bi-weekly quizzes. Tests are long and pretty difficult, the questions are application questions, not just memorization. Overall a good class but work hard!
If you have to take Dr. Swenson I am sorry. If you think taking a class from him is better than taking a math class from one of the other professors who's English is difficult to understand, just take the other professor. Dr. Swenson's lectures are only useful to people who already understand the material.
Prof. Swenson is a pretty funny guy. I have never taken a business class before, so it was hard for me to wrap my head around all of the charts/tables/models/etc, but he tries to make it as easy as possible. He uses BungeeLink questions in class to record attendance. Assignments are through the online textbook, so you need it.
Anyone who is telling you this class is hard either didn't read or go to class because this is the easiest material ever and Swenson makes it enjoyable. It's basically a class of common sense, I put in maybe an hour a week and I'm going into the final with a super high A. Swenson is funny and clear in his expectations for the course.
Swenson doesn't provide materials to practice for the tests, perhaps like 6 review questions if you go to the review sessions, the rest is just read the textbook and be able to remember what you read for the test, 100 question comprehensive final, no practice tests. Its essentially the opposite of Accounting with Larson, very unstructured
Great professor that does his best to make class interesting. Not a very challenging class, there are four easy papers throughout the semester and reading for almost every class period. Some people complain about his tests having more than one correct answer, but if you do the reading, the correct answers will be pretty obvious.
Insanely boring lectures filled with annoying Dad jokes. I learned almost nothing from his lectures. All self taught. No late assignments and I had a crisis around mid semester and got one in late.. Messed up my grade, -5%, and I would've had an A or A- if he would've allowed me to turn it in. Also, tests are super subjective. Horrible experience.
Swenson is a real gem at BYU. He is always very enthusiastic and available to his students. It is clear that he has a passion for what he teaches
He's an okay professor. I was disappointed with the lectures- they were essentially what we had read and quizzed on, with some additional videos included. I was mostly disappointed by lack of examples; he normally just used what was already given in the book, and he always fell back on the same 5 companies. He is obsessed with IKEA.
Great teacher, massive class. 4 easy assignments where TAs are just trying to check off grading boxes, not look for understanding. He put in effort to teach well and make it fun. He wrote the textbook, so his teaching was the same as the reading.
I loved this class! It was super fun and Prof Swenson is a funny guy. There isn't much homework at all but the tests kind of hurt my grade. They are strict memorization and it's difficult to tell what is important to study. The first test was very easy and the second one was randomly a lot harder. Pay attention to lectures!
GREAT CLASS. Swenson is the greatest. Super chill guy. Gives you all the information you need to know in order to succeed. There's only 4 assignments and they're fun to do! Tests are easy if you study all the material. He posts all the slides so it's really easy to be prepared for tests.
You're treated like a freshman in this class and the first 10 minutes are unhelpful announcements. The book alone would have been sufficient to take the exams but attendance is required nonetheless. He doesn't care too much about you since there are so many students.
Brother Swenson is great! His class is super entertaining although may seem like a waste of time sometimes. Attendance is required. 4 assignments are straightforward just make sure you are specific and detailed. Quizzes before class. It seems really easy but you need to study hard for his tests to get an A. Easy B/B+ class. Have to work for the A.
This class took me by surprise. I always felt like it would be fairly easy, but the tests caught me off guard every time, lowering my grade more than I would have liked. Study harder than I did and you'll be okay. Good lectures too.
Maybe I just hate marketing, but this class was BO-RING. I only took it to fulfill bachelor's requirements for my dental hygiene degree. Dr. Swenson gives you a lot of information, but I never really felt like I could absorb anything. Also every class was hellishly boring. Maybe it was just me! Don't take this if you don't like marketing.
Will this man just open up all his quizzes at once and or a least all the ones for the upcoming week UGH!! You get like a 24 period to take the quizzes that starts at 1pm and ends at 1pm the next day! such a weird time to pick and with corona it is a pain in the butt to try and remember exactly when they are open and when they close.
Loved professor Swenson. He is always willing to help out and talk to you if you have any questions. Lectures are interesting, tests you should study for.
Swenson is a funny guy and all, but this class was much tougher than it needed to be. Your tests account for 68% of your grade and the tests are 100% situational. You have to study on your own because my TAs were not helpful at all. The review slides were just slides from class, and they took forever to grade assignments.
Prof. Swenson is a nice guy whose charming disposition will disarm you into thinking that his exams will be as pleasant. Nope! The exams test you on oddly specific content and one-liners given in guest lectures. Unnecessarily difficult for a course with such a broad emphasis on soft skills. If not for the pre-req, I would have avoidedthis class.
lectures are straight from the textbook, but he shows fun ads in class and is super nice.
Everyone says that this is the easiest class of all the Marriott School prereqs. I would second that statement. The tests are actually pretty hard, which made me kinda nervous. But I studied and got high As on the first 2 tests. Then Covid happened and I think he felt pressured to make the final way harder. I got a B, but still ended with an A.
easy class, but you do have to land basically an A of A- on all the exams to get an A in the class. good professor, he was funny and kind to students. the assignments seem simple, but they are worth like 20% of your grade so put the time in on those.
This guy loves the sound of his own voice, I'm sure of it. I did like having guest speakers but I don't want to know that you belong to the same country club. I was graded much more harshly than my peers on the written assignments so that could be dependant on which TA you get. Tests are based on knowing breadth not depth. Best of luck xoxo
This is touted as being one of the easiest Marriott School prereqs. Unlike what some have said this course requires a lot of reading and the assignments are unnecessarily cumbersome. If you put the time in and read the instructions, you will do well on the assignments. Tests are difficult--it covers breadth, not depth. Good luck!
LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES! Go to every class and listen. Understand how he thinks. Know every term in every diagram. Understand clearly the differences of words with similar definitions. His tests are scenarios of companies or products, and asks you what words best describes the product or event. Was docked on one assignment for being too specific....
By far the worst professor I've had at BYU. I've gotten an A in finance, A in Accounting, and an A in EXDM. All these classes have been talked about being harder than Marketing from Swenson. But he could be the most dysfunctional professor I've ever had. Assignments aren' very clear, and get docked points with no feedback. Book is basically useless
Professor Swenson is super funny! He has participation quizzes each class so you need to go, but honestly I looked forward to his classes each week. There is reading and a pre-class quiz each week but it's super easy. If you do the reading you'll do well on the tests. He has super interesting guest speakers as well
This class is SUPER boring. Prof Swenson is a good guy, but he just reads off of his powerpoint the entire time.
Professor Swenson is awesome! He makes the lectures very interesting and finds ways to apply the principles in ways that the students understand. Attendance is based on bungeelink and he offers extra credit. The textbook is interesting and the quizzes are not bad.
Took during Fall 2020 Covid semester as on-demand. Put in minimal effort and am currently sitting at at A-. Do the reading in MyEducator or just google quiz answers for the weekly class quizzes, and the Lecture videos are essentially a repeat of the reading. Also 4 easy projects (took maybe an hour each). Two midterms and comprehensive final.
Brother Swenson is a great guy. He shares a good number of kinda cheesy dad jokes which are nice. His MKTG201 class is pretty easy. 2 quizzes per week usually (10 questions each), 3 exams, and 4 easy assignments. Not a hard class, but very interesting.
Grading was harsh in this class so be careful. There is a HUGE weight on the 4 assignments (5%/per) that are due throughout the semester so if you miss one you can count on your grade going from an A- to a B-. He takes away the flexibility of an online class by only making quizzes and lectures available for only 24 hours which pissed me off.
Professor Swenson is a quirky guy whose lectures often drag on forever. I felt like lots of the examples and application he shared was out of date. 2 quizzes/week, open note but only open for 24 hours. 2 Midterms & Final, hard even if you study the study guide. Questions are application based. I didn't feel like he spent time on things that mattere
Long lectures but very easy workload. The 2 midterms and finals hold such a high weight on your grade that it's harder than it should be to get an A/A+ -- which is very frustrating.
The only assignments that actually matter in this class are the Exams. I did great on the papers and quizzes, but was ultimately held back from an A by my first exam grade. As long as you study hard for the exams, you'll be alright. His prerecorded lectures tended to range from 45 minutes to almost two hours so, get ready for that.
His lectures were great and easy to listen to. He also provides study guides for exams which was super helpful.
Get ready because his lectures are loooong! Easy projects and open notes quizzes. The only bad thing about his class is that midterms and finals cover a big percentage of your grade, so if you don't do well on tests, that would affect you a lot!
LOVED THIS CLASS! made me realize I wanted to be a marketer. he is very inconsistent w the length of the lectures. some were 30 min, others were 2 hours. he is very funny. the class is 70% tests though, and there are only 2 midterms and the final.
This class just wasn't that transparent. I never was able to review my tests to see what I missed, never heard about the TAs, and I never got feedback on my assignments. I took this class during Covid so maybe they were figuring that out still. The online lectures were boring too.
I enjoyed taking this class online b/c I could watch all lectures in doubletime. I felt like the subject material was a bit subjective at times, but that is more a complaint I have with marketing in general (I'm a microbiology major). I wish the TA's gave more feedback on their grading of the assignments but if you memorize quizlets youll get an A.
Professor Swenson's does a good job nailing down the basics of marketing. To pass, study well for each test as they are weighted heavily. Make sure to turn everything in on time as TAs' grading is sporadic.
Everything on the tests come from the lectures, so make sure you take good notes and don't skip class. Lot's of memorizing for the tests, but the concepts aren't too difficult to grasp. Anyone who complains about this class didn't go to class and didn't study for tests and cries because they actually had to study to succeed.
Class wasn't too hard. I watched only about twenty minutes of the lecture, but studied hard for the exams (2 midterms 1 final), there were 4 assignments that take about an hour and open notes reading quizzes for each chapter. Overall not too hard.
MKTG 201 was a good class, it was just a lot of stuff to remember. Tests are weighted heavily so make sure you do well on them. Lectures are kind of long and monotonous, but they are helpful. Just make sure to do well on the tests and writing assignments.
This class is very simple. 2 quizzes, 2 lectures a week, 3 tests, and 4 assignments. The lectures are long but recorded so you can double speed. It is easy to forget about this class but you definitely need to study for the tests. Tests are always curved a few percents. The tests have a lot from the lectures so don't forget to watch them!
For MKTG 201: Marketing wasn't my thing, but the workload for the course is not bad at all. It all comes down to tests, and there's always some tricky questions on the tests. If you study hard for the tests, you'll get a good grade, if you don't, you likely won't. He is passionate about marketing, and I've heard the in-person class is more fun
I wish I had put more effort into this class because it wasn't very difficult. If you take good notes on his lectures and review them before the exams, you should be fine. His lecture were well done
Marketing 201 just isn't that great of a class. The concepts covered are basic and not very helpful. Professor Swenson does his best to teach a class that contains mostly boring material.
It was an interesting class, but I had a few issues with it. The tests were weighted heavily, hard, and keep in mind an A is a 94, not a 93, and he does not round (I got a 93.8) Also, this may have been a fluke, but at one point I emailed him to meet, and it took him 2 more emails and over a week and a half to respond. Overall good.
His lecture videos were so hard to sit through, and I never knew if the material was important for the test or just another story. Sometimes the lectures were thirty minutes and sometimes they could be over 90 minutes. I mainly focused on reading through and taking good notes on the textbook, and that wasn't enough.
This class would be better without it being prerecorded lectures. Lectures were long, and it wasn't clear what was important information and what was just stories. When it came time for tests (a big chunk of your grade) I always felt good but did poorly. I wouldn't take this class. To try and get a good grade stresses you out more than it's worth
I honestly thought Professor Swenson was an awesome guy, however this class was not. I got basically 100% on all my projects and quizzes which were fairly easy, but the exams are worth 70% OF YOUR ENTIRE GRADE. Which means if you fail even slightly on them, your grade plummets... significantly. Wish I enjoyed this class more, but nope.
I struggled in this course because it was a lot more work than I was expecting. The majority of your grade is exams. I aced every quiz, and assignment but struggled with the tests. If you're the test type take it, but be aware that your grade is consists of mostly exam scores.
Here is a great professor. The quizzes are pretty easy and the assignments are super straightforward and don't take much time. The tests can be tough, but if you study straight from the class slides and review slides it is super easy. Highly recommend!
Tests make up 70% of grade and he only offers 1% extra credit which makes it very difficult to get a good grade if you don't get above 90% on every exam. Classic academic professor that is out of touch with the real world and his students.
prof swenson is a great guy and knows what he's talking about. the only thing that's annoying is that if you miss class and there was some assignment announced, you won't hear about it later. they do not do email reminders or announcements if something changes. so skipping is not advised, but class does feel very repetitive of the reading so RIP
Really funny and nice guy. His tests especially the final were quite difficult at least for me. Lectures are just on the reading so not too crazy.
Great class, would for sure take again. He's a really great dude and missing class is no biggie he posts all slides online if you wanted to look over it.
I'm sure Prof. Swenson is a great guy in real life but as a professor he is not my favorite. He is out of touch with his students and I felt that his lectures always got off topic. His powerpoints are TERRIBLE the animations and transitions actually hurt your eyes to watch. The tests are impossible and make up the majority of your grade.
He does a good job at trying to teach terrible material. The book that he wrote with some of his colleagues is convoluted and was obviously rushed towards the end. Make sure you do the behavioral lab for extra credit. He just goes over the exact same material in class that you read in your book the night before. His exams are poorly written.
I loved this class! He was a super fun professor and the lectures were awesome! Very entertaining and easy to follow. There is a reading before almost every class, and a few projects, but nothing crazy. Very clear about what he wants.
Swenson was okay. He was actually really funny but the material he taught was boring. The tests make up 70% of your grade so I wouldn't recommend taking this course for your first semester at BYU. For the tests, memorize every term mentioned in the text book and lecture as soon as possible. My grade would have been better if I had done this.
He gives you all the material you need to master the concepts, but you need to put the hours in outside of class (3-5 additional hours outside of readings). If you put in the time you will succeed. Talk to the TA's about your assignment before turning them in. Not hard conceptually, but there is a lot to memorize. I learned so much from this class.
It was really difficult to know exactly what he would test on. He is funny and I can tell he cares about marketing, but the lectures were the exact same as the reading so I didn't feel it was necessary to have both. The tests are worth so much of your grade, but its really difficult to know what he tests on.
Swenson is a great guy but I took this class my first semester at BYU and struggled a bit. 3 tests are 70% of your grade and TA's do not do any sort of test review. The lectures were long but he made it entertaining. another thing that bothered me: He also only gives 1% of extra credit. Overall class was fun but I was way lost when it came to tests
Professor Swenson is a fun person, and I did feel like I learned a lot about marketing, but a lot of the concepts are vague and it's a LOT of memorization. The lectures were often boring. Also the exams are worth 70% of the grade, so you could really skip class, study hard for the exams by reading the textbook and slides, and pass this class.
Man likes to listen to himself talk. There arent very many assignments and there 2 midterms. Just read the textbook, go to class, and take quality notes because you basically just have to memorize a bunch of stuff for the test.
The tests were not bad if you know his slides well, people that say they are super vague just arent studying haha because the questions are pretty close to his slides. He tries to make a very content heavy course interesting with lots of fun videos and examples which I really liked and the assignments were pretty good activities to learn real life
He is a great guy. The class however was the least enjoyable in the business school. Feels like a lot of memorizing and answering questions by thinking, "what would Professor Swenson say here" rather than giving a good logical answer. Marketing is not a simple algebra. He also says he can't help you individually because the class is so big.
tries to be funny and isn't
This is an easy class and shouldn't hurt your grade. His lectures are helpful but missing a few won't hurt you. He is not very respectful to students or gracious in his words about other majors, but it's an essential class for the business school.
You will get through his class and not know anything about how to market a product. Complete waste of time. The test is all about knowing some niche info applied to a random company that is not even important instead of key concepts. This is the worst class that I have taken at BYU.
Horrible class. This is not marketing, it's literally just a bunch of charts Swenson drew that you have to memorize in order to pass his class. If you really want to learn marketing, go get a job marketing and in 1 week you will learn more than you will a whole semester in this class. Didnt bother going to his class the last half of the semester.
Honestly was a pretty good class. Liked the lectures. Tests are weighted really heavy so you definitely have to study. If you study, youll do well.
His tests are worded super tricky and no matter how hard you study for them, you still won't do great. He makes you read and learn the entire unit before coming to class (the quizzes have a 10 minute time limit) where he just repeats the same thing that was in the reading. Coming to class is pointless because you have already learned the info.
I wish I could give him a higher rating because he really is a good guy and is pretty funny. But his tests were so dumb and I didn't learn a ton about how to actually market a product. There was just a lot of vocabulary that isn't super useful. His projects were interesting though.
Nice guy but the way that this class is set up is ridiculous. Prepare to study 100+ completely subjective meaningless graphs and definitions that the marketing professors made together only to forget them the moment you leave the testing center. Testing your knowledge of the textbook they wrote. I was Pre-Marketing until I took this class.
He only focuses on covering the material that he is supposed to teach. Teaching techniques are very outdated. Tests represent 70%, the extra credit is a joke and many people took it as an offense. All of those who gave him good reviews are because they want to get into Marketing or are already part of the program. My WORST teacher at BYU
I was excited, but this class convinced me to do Communications instead. Seems like a nice guy, but the tests are waaay too difficult. We could spend like ten minutes on a topic in class and it would be 3 questions, whereas a topic covered for a whole lecture was like one question. Extra Credit was only 1% and it required 4 studies to get it.
I love marketing but absolutely hated this class. I studied more for this class than I did for all the accounting pre reqs. My class had 300 hundred students get somewhere between a failing grade to a high B in the class which is funny because you need at least a B+ to even apply to the program. Take this class to only to learn worthless material.
Going to class is pointless because the professor repeats the exact same thing from the readings. The tests are so wordy and complicated. I studied hard for the tests but no matter how hard I tried, the questions were impossible to answer correctly. It seems that to pass this class you need to memorize all the definitions from the readings.
Professor Swenson is nice but this class was painful. I have worked different multiple marketing jobs over the last couple years and not one thing I learned in this class was remotely beneficial to any of the jobs that I have had. Just took the final and I already have forgotten everything I studied for his test. women studies > marketing at BYU
I have no idea why everyone is giving Professor Swenson a bad review. Sometimes his lectures felt a little boring, but it was so easy to do well in this class. The tests and assignments were super easy if you did the reading, paid attention in class, and studied the class slides. His lectures are repetitive, but that makes it easy to remember.
I'm very passionate about marketing, but I have to be honest this is probably one of the worst classes I've taken at BYU. Professor Swenson's lectures are really disengaging repetitions of the reading with only slightly added detail. Tests take up 70% of your grade and focus on niche topics rather than key course principles.
Professor Swenson is one of my favorite Professors at BYU. He is kind and cares about his students. To be successful in this class you have to put forth the effort. You will do well if you know his class slides (which he posts on learning suite) and are engaged in his lectures. He's always willing to help if you have a question and so are his TA's.
I hated this class.
Swenson is one of the best professors at BYU. He wants each and everyone of his students to succeed. If you put in the time and effort and are engaged in his lectures you will be fine. KNOW THE SLIDES. He is very passionate, encouraging, supportive, he shares cool stories, and gives lots of great advice. TAKE THIS CLASS and get to know Swenson
I am solely giving a one star rating because of 3 things: 1, He forces you to buy an online textbook that he wrote. You don't need it in order to get the course material. You have 4 assignments that can only be done through this online textbook (all the rest are done on learning suite) and it's worth like 20% of your grade. #FireMike
The tests for this class are all together worth 70% of your grade and they are not easy. You are expected to know the smallest details from the review slides which makes it very difficult to do well.
Swenson is a lot of fun! If you take notes, pay attention in the lectures, and study the slides (all test questions come from the slides) then you will do well.
Good luck studying 600 slides for the 100 question final. This class is the biggest waste of time. Lectures were so boring and mandatory because he asked you random questions on the test about them.
Great guy, but boring class. The lectures aren't helpful for any of the tests, neither are the weekly quizzes. The tests are the main part of the grade- so don't bomb any or your grade tanks. The TAs aren't there to ever help. To succeed, just memorize all of the vocabulary and discussions, and be able to apply it to real word situations for tests.
I did all the reading and took notes on it, and this made the class fairly easy. The tests and lectures were based off the textbook. The few assignments did not take very long. Professor Swenson was well-prepared and was good at covering applicable material in class.
Swenson's a nice guy but his class isn't great. Tests are 70% of your grade and he doesn't prepare you well at all. Lectures are extremely boring and only a small portion of the time in class is useful. TA's don't do much throughout the semester, but the one final review that they did helped more than the class lectures. Rough class, but doable.
Professor Swenson makes an effort to make his lectures not boring, and there are a lot of interesting guest lecturers. Reading/taking notes on textbook readings, going to most (if not all) of the lectures, studying in study groups for exams, studying slides he posts, and doing the SONA extra credit will make it easier to get an A.
The tests are a huge part of the grade, they are 50 questions, and 100 for the final. You need 94% to get an A, feels unnecessarily high for a business class. The lectures are boring and are not that helpful for the tests. This class is all about memorizing some useless concepts.
It shows that he works hard to make his lectures interesting and fun, but because the class is an intro a lot of the test and quizzes are memorizing concepts. Overall, it was a good class and felt like all the needed resources were provided to succeed.
Exams were not as difficult as I had seen on Swenson's reviews. I attended lecture maybe three times and ended up getting an A. It will save you time by skipping lecture and just focusing on the slides! Just make sure to study the lecture slides he posts and take notes on the textbook readings, and you will do well on the exams.
Although this class is lecture heavy, Professor Swenson tries to make them entertaining. The class is pretty straight forward. The one warning I would give is that the tests are hard and heavily weighted, so if you do bad on a test your grade is pretty much wrecked. Study terms and use the TAs especially to see what you get wrong on tests.
You need a 94 for an A. This class was hard. There were a lot of new concepts you had to memorize. The tests are the majority of your grade and they are difficult. I loved Prof. Swenson and enjoyed this class but it was really difficult and frustrating that even though I put in hours every week and worked really hard I still got an A-
Would not recommend. I have no clue why so many people would take this from him. He created the entire class (textbook, tests, and powerpoints). If you don't understand him you will fail.
Professor Swenson's tests have an average grade of a B-. I am not a bad student. I have above a 3.9 GPA and studied for hours using his PowerPoints and the textbook. I have attended each lecture and taken notes. I got a B- on his tests. Take the information however you like but I feel he gives poor direction and then tests hard. Don't take him.
99% of what is covered in lecture is just repeat of what you have to read in the textbook before class so you can do the pre-class quiz. But you can't just skip lecture because occasionally he will bring something up that isn't in the book and he removes from the slides he posts online. He does this on purpose so you have to come to class.
The most boring and easy to zone out lectures ever. Most of your grade are your test scores, and the test are just memorizing hundreds of terms. After the test I did not remember anything. Didn't learn anything from the class. Tests are harder than they need to be. Take another teacher if possilbe.
Prof. Swenson is a nice guy, but terrible at teaching. Marketing should've been such a relevant class, but everything is just memorizing abstract concepts with no application. The course encourages cramming over actual learning. Lectures are mind-numbingly boring. You can succeed, but it takes more work than should be necessary and some frustration
Straight memorization. Class is basically a repeat of the book, so choose one or the other. The key is to just memorize, memorize, memorize before the test. Super dry sense of humor. Some people end up loving it though. Decent class, but I would take it from another professor if I could go back and do it again.
Prof Swenson is a nice dude. But honestly, the lectures felt very repetitive, and they pretty much just went over what we read in the textbook. Attendance was definitely optional. I studied a lot for the tests, but they were pretty straightforward. IMO most of the stuff we talked about was either common sense or marketing according to Swenson.
Swenson is a good guy, however the class is all reading. Attending a lecture is pretty useless until the tests come up and have quite a few surprise questions about things he or guest speakers mentioned once or twice in class. The whole class is about memorizing over about 200 terms for each test. Honestly it doesn't prepare students well.
Prof. Swenson was a nice guy, but the whole class was pretty much a waste of time. You have to do a ton of reading, and it is not worth very much. The class is super test-heavy. Test questions were poorly worded word problems, and the answers were based on his opinion because most of the concepts covered in the class were stuff he made up.
If you want to succeed in his class, memorize content and powerpoint as soon as you learn about them. Very lecture heavy, tests are worth the majority of your grade. He's a great guy, but I would recommend taking the class from someone else if possible
His lectures are repetitive from the readings, and fairly boring. Nice guy, but the class was just ok. The tests are pretty hard, especially given they are a huge portion of your grade and you need a 94 for an A. You have to do a lot of memorization, and pay attention to catch the random 2 questions on the test that were only talked about in class.
The class is in serious need of a refresh. PowerPoint images and videos are several years old. Remember windows XP? The class glosses over abstract concepts devoid of practical application. Swenson has the biggest ego of any professor I've taken at BYU. He loves to gloat to his captive audience of young, impressionable BYU students. Yea, hard pass.
This class is not as hard as people make it seem. Attending the lectures are not necessary if you read and take detailed notes from the textbook. Although sometimes the videos and examples from the lectures are very entertaining. The exams are very fair and you will get a good grade if you memorize your textbook notes. Overall, I enjoyed this class
I recommend taking the class from someone else. Professor Swenson is a nice guy, but not so much as a great professor. Doesn't really prepare you for exams and super lecture and textbook heavy to the point where you have to memorize everything since the littlest details are on the exams.
Take it from someone else!!!
This class is very easy if you are willing to put in the basic work. I think people find the tests difficult because they are skipping lectures or not doing the reading. Attend the lectures, take detailed notes, do the readings (and take notes), read the assignment instructions carefully, study for tests, and you'll do amazing!
There is a quiz due before each class on a chapter. He goes over the same material in the textbook in class so it can sometimes feel repetitive. But he is a very entertaining lecturer and is hilarious. Pay attention to the examples he uses in class they are really helpful for tests and understanding concepts
I have learned that studying for the test is not too bad as long as you are reading the textbook, attending lecture and paying attention, and taking notes. I had heard that the tests for this class could be tough, be I found that by putting in the effort before the test, studying and taking the first midterm was fairly easy.
One of my favorite business classes. His tests are extremely fair but very difficult, you need to review the class slides, read the textbook and attend the reviews, but if you do the tests are very straight forward. If you don't enjoy business you probably won't enjoy this class. Professor Swenson's lectures are often fun, and very content rich.
The class lectures are dry and are just regurgitations of the book. The exams are worth 70 percent of your grade and they are hard. Goodluck.
I liked Swenson, he's funny. Straightforward class, memorize concepts from textbook and be able to apply them to real-life scenarios. Test questions are mostly common sense and being able to pick up on context clues. Lectures are long but they follow the textbook. Put in time to study and you'll do fine. Good intro to marketing.
Open book reading quizzes. The lecture is copied from the textbook he wrote and felt repetitive but has interesting guest speakers. Tests were extremely hard for me, and I attended lectures, read and took notes from chapters, went to review sessions, and met with TAs. He knows the material, but his TAs do not. TA ran Review sessions did not help.
Tests are 70% of your grade and he didn't give us a study guide, just told us if we had been in class we'd be fine. There's a ton of material in this course and a lot of it repeats itself but just has a different name for the next test. Lectures were long and boring and he shows no mercy if you don't perform well.
I liked Prof. Swenson but his class was hard for me. The tests were hard and it was a lot of reading and lectures covered the same things you read. Open book quizzes, but the tests didn't reflect the quizzes. The reviews also didn't prepare you well for the test. It's A TON of memorizing, and tests are pretty hard. Assignments weren't too bad.
Professor Swenson's class is not difficult as long as you attend lectures and take relatively good notes. Most of the exam material comes from the lectures. He makes the lectures fun and engaging, but sometimes they can be bland. His dad humor really helped me get through some of the more boring topics. The guest speakers are awesome too.
Don't mess with Prof Swenson in lecture! Very respectable teacher, most of the learning is done on your own in the online textbook. Two weekly open-note quizzes, four easy assignments over the semester, two midterms and a final. Very passionate about the subject, I'd recommend going to Swenson if you ever have questions, TAs aren't always helpful.
One of the easiest Marriott school pre-reqs. Reading the textbook and taking notes helped me understand the material, and then the lecture is kind of the same info, so you can just take notes on the stuff that's not in the textbook and the examples he gives. I thought the tests were pretty easy as long as you read the book and went to class.
This class is hard. Tests make up 70% of your grade and 94 is an A. Just study his slides for his tests, take good notes about examples (tests are just application), and think like him (he wrote the whole course). Also his TAs are by far the worst I've ever experienced. Especially the ones who do the review--they don't know their stuff.
The in person lectures were very repetitive of the textbook readings. Waste of time. Swenson spent a lot of time boasting about himself and achievements versus being a humble and informative professor. The class needs an update. The tests were very difficult and poorly worded. If you want to do well, memorize the concepts as soon as he teaches them
He was awesome, hard tests but study and you'll do alright.
If you don't read the textbook, you're going to struggle. Read the book and then you'll understand what's going on in class and have an easier time memorizing it for the tests. Swenson is hilarious and even though I didn't love marketing, he tried to make it fun. The TAs were helpful, especially for going over the midterms to see what I missed.
I really enjoyed his lectures, the class did not feel like a class, so I got excited to go every single time.
Super fun person and gives funny lectures, it was by far my favorite class to go to. He is very sweet, just make sure you pay attention to the material during the lectures, I could have done better with that. But I loved him, he is so awesome and engaging with the lectures!
Graded by a few things: a couple of assignments, chapter quizzes, 2 midterms, and a final. Personally, the concepts being taught were very common sense and uninteresting but maybe that's just me. As long as you memorize the slides and take okay notes during the lectures you'll do fine. Easy to get a B, but mildly difficult to achieve an A.
The class is completely memorization-based. You won't learn any skills, but you'll watch a bunch of ads that Professor S will make dad jokes about. The only thing you'll probably remember from this class is, "If you're not reaching the heart, you're not marketing." Just study the lecture slides. Overall, not a good class, but not very difficult.
Boring lectures, seemed like the same concepts with every lecture, but if you didn't memorize the slides he put up, the test would come super hard. Not that hard to get a B but getting an A is impressive. He's a nice guy, just seems like he's been using the same slides and dad jokes for the past decade.
This man has an ego for sure--HOWEVER, this class is really not that bad. Tests are truly not challenging as long as you're generally paying attention in class and review your notes. A lot of the content feels pretty self explanatory. I thought the content was interesting and the textbook was engaging. Do extra credit, it helps.
He made class interesting! The slides and videos you watch are actually entertaining. The 3 tests are worth a lot, but if you study they were ok. And he is a nice person, and I appreciate how clear and organized everything is.
Loved this class! There are 2 weekly 5 question quizzes but its open textbook so not hard at all. Lectures were very entertaining, he's a funny guy. Test were basically memorization and application. There are 2 exams and a comprehensive final. I basically rewrote all his slides to study and finished with a high A. Also do the extra credit.
Swenson is consistent which I like but the lectures are the same thing as the reading but the reading quizzes are due before the lectures. If you learn by reading this is the class.
This class had the most incredibly difficult tests. The weekly readings were not bad and the assignments were easy but the tests were so so so HARD. The lectures were incredibly boring and had the same info as the readings. Professor Swenson was not only a boring lecturer but did not create a culture of respect for all students.
Mind-numblingly dull. 90$ online textbook written by the professor.
RUN!!! Possibly the worst lecturer at BYU. All he does is read from the slides that are directly taken from the textbook. He makes a genuinely interesting subject incredibly boring and the tests are difficult. Take this class with Dr. Christensen at all costs.
The most boring, useless, busywork, depressing class I could imagine. Take from the other guys, he seems alright.
I'm sad that there are so many negative reviews because I loved Professor Swenson. He's funny, and the lectures were entertaining, as we would watch ads and analyze marketing campaigns. The tests are basically all memorization, so if you memorize everything you'll do well. Definitely not the most difficult class I've taken at BYU.
I stopped going to class completely by the end of the semester. You only need to read the textbook for the quizzes. Take notes from the slides and you'll do well on the tests. Swenson hasn't been my favorite professor, but it's a class that can be endured. Probably take from Christensen if you can.
Not a great professor. Seems like he's a little behind the times. His lectures are boring and the jokes are horrible, I skipped most of the lectures for my sanity. Nothing matters but the exams in this class, and there are no study guides and the TAs are decent at best. Try a different teacher, save yourself some hours and some work.
I dont know if it's the professor or just the class. Marketing is all about doing yet we did very little of that. 90% of your grade is based off of 3 tests that are 50 question bubble sheet tests in the testing center. Memorization is all I really learned. If youre not a good test taker like me do the extra credt.
Nice guy and decent lectures. I never missed a class, did all the homework, studied excessively, worked my butt off just to get a B-. Most of the grade is dependent on the exams.
this class isn't very hard. there are a lot of assignments every week, but they took me an hour and a half a week max. the class can be taken completely remote since the only lecture is always recorded. I would recommend this class for the basic mktg credit
lectures were so useless, just repeats of the reading. your grade is 70% midterms and exams so be ready. i think he's the best mktg prof but this class just sucks. do the readings and study the vocab + slides and you'll be ok
Professor Swenson's MKT201 is straightforward but can be a grind. Lots of weekly assignments, but not too difficult. Rely on the textbook and unstuckstudy ai for test prep - the lectures can be skipped if needed.
Professor Swenson is terrible. Should consider retirement. Super nice guy and funny, but he cant teach. Not even worth showing up to class.
Professor Swenson can't teach. Take the class from someone else. And if you do take it from him its not even worth going to class. He just talks about who knows what.
Stopped going to class before the first exam. Says "AlL eXaM quEsTioNs ArE FRoM mY LecTuREs!" which is false. Lectures are repeats of the book + some jokes. Quizzes are easy. Gotten 100% on all assignment using chat (which is allowed btw). Studying for tests is just learning vocab terms and math. Fairly easy. Don't go to class. Read and study.
The class itself is fine. His lectures can sometimes be boring - but the real kickers are his exams. They're 70% of your grade and oddly specific. A lot of the things we learn are rather subjective, but his tests are very particular and not always completely relevant. The kind of tests that trip you up in the testing center.
Professor Swenson has really good lectures, and explains the material well. I would take a class from him again! The tests are a lot of your grade, and can be difficult.
Class is fairly easy, but lectures can be boring. tests are worth a lot of your grade. There are reading quizzes due before every class. He can be funny. He gives good examples during lectures. TA's aren't the best. Textbook is $100. 2 midterms, and 1 cumulative final. A couple of random assignments but they're easy and he enforces the use of AI.
His class was fairly easy but very exam heavy. The quizzes, which were a small part of the grade, were very easy. All assignments you were allowed (or required) to use AI. The exams weren't hard for me you just need to attend class and understand the concepts taught. However, if you do bad at an exam you get screwed over with your grade.
The tests were weighted too heavily. My friend took the online class and it was much easier than my in person class.
Professor Swenson is a great guy, but lectures were often really boring. There was a reading quiz before every class, and an online project every once in a while, but use of AI is encouraged. The tests are a big chunk of the grade and the TA test reviews were very helpful. Other than the reviews the TAs weren't very helpful though.
I didn't love this class. You have to spend $90 on a textbook that is mostly just fancy over-complicated terms. Our final exam review was cancelled, and instead of going over the review in class, we talked about bucket lists for an hour. Not exaggerating. We didn't even get a recording or anything, just 147 review slides to study ourselves.
He just stands at the front and spits words at you all class long. I didn't pay attention, memorized the TA review slides, and passed the class just fine. The assignments are easily done with AI (which he encourages) but you've got to be on top of the quizzes because there's 2/week. His humor isn't for everyone.
Scam artist. Makes you submit projects through his $90 textbook, forcing you to buy it. Horribly organized class content, not engaging in lectures, narcissistic and thinks he is hilarious. Final exam is 100 questions that are typo-ridden and recycled from midterms.
Lots of harsh things being said and not all true, lots of different perspectives out there. Class isn't to hard, do the pre-class quizzes and study for the exams using review slides. There are repeat questions from the Midterms on the Final. Extra credit kept me at a A-. Yes you have to pay for the book he made, but thats the story of college.
I didn't learn anything from what he said in class. I wish I hadn't gone to lectures. I've done fine on the midterms by going to reviews, but he canceled the review for the final and wouldn't even have the TAs do a Zoom or recording, just 147 information-heavy slides. You have to buy the $90 online textbook that he wrote. He thinks he's hilarious.
Honestly one of the most outdated classes I've ever taken. Teacher is not a really connected with the field anymore. All of his marketing teaching applied 15 years ago. But not as much today.
I actually loved his lectures, definitely do the readings for the weekly quizzes and extra credit they seriously boost your grade. Tests were pretty heavy on memorizing, but the review sessions and slides pretty much tell you what's on the test so study it well and you'll be fine! You can also use AI on assignments, he was always available to meet!
Honestly one of the most annoying professors I've ever had. You will sit there and go through the most boring slides in the world as he proceeds to make dad jokes that make me want to smack my head against a chair. I reached out to him several times for help questions about fixing a grade and he never responded.
Exam-wise, every point counts. This makes it frustrating when questions have spelling errors or wording that feels intentionally screwy. Watch out for those exam review slides, too, because they're not entirely reliable either. TA meeting times are limited and you'll have to compete with hundreds of students. Textbook is an extra $100.
I loved Swenson! He is super awesome and really nice when you talk to him. Honestly this class really isn't bad. Just turn in your assignments on time and study the class slides well for the exams. This class had well written exams. Overall I learned a lot from just paying attention to the lectures. You get out what you put into this class.
Swenson was a funny lecturer, and I enjoyed his class overall. The course has a lot of reading for daily quizzes and is very test-heavy. (70%) The extra credit is only 1% of the course and doesn't do much. I enjoyed the content of the course but am not a very good multiple-choice test taker, thus receiving a B.
Course material was semi-interesting, but lectures dragged on and were so boring. People are harsh on here: he's not the worst, just has long and boring classes and makes you buy a $100 textbook. He clicks through 70 slides per class and expects you to memorize literally everything. I got an A but it's because I memorized everything he ever said.
I loved Professor Swenson. I thought his lectures were incredibly engaging and helped you gain a solid foundation of marketing concepts. This class is very test heavy though. It is relatively easy to get 100% on all the quizzes and assignments. Go to the TA review sessions for the midterms and final. They cover everything that will be on the exams.
Lectures were very boring to me, it was hard to stay engaged. I love to laugh and having a funny professor helps me learn better, his jokes just did not land. Going to class is not necessary, just memorize all the slides and you can get an A. TA reviews for the midterms are helpful too. Easy A I would say, but remember you get out what you put in.
The lectures are just repeat readings, but I genuinely liked his style. Pretty dry humor, which I enjoyed. Homework is easy and he embraces AI in a very forward way.
He is a good professor. You get out what you put in. This class inspired me to go into marketing, and I will forever be grateful for that. He invited some really wonderful guest speakers (CMOs from big companies) and used lots of cool examples in his class.
His rate my professor rating should be higher. Prod. Swenson is amazing and I loved his MKTG 201 class. He taught concepts well and was overall super easy. His tests were not hard at all and there was no homework. He also tested us on his power points instead of the textbook, which was so nice. Definitely take MKTG 201 from him!
Swenson is a funny guy. Lectures are very difficult to sit through and not remotely engaging. The course grade is 70% exams. WAY TOO HEAVY for intro course. Beware that even if you excel at two of the tests one of them can totally tank your grade. No effective study materials or exam review. A man who in his heart cares but poorly designed course.
I loved this class so much, it made me decide to switch my major to Marketing. Swenson is such a good teacher and helps you love the content if you give him a chance. Class is hard, but study and you'll do fine
Honestly, if you are diligent in doing your daily quizzes (only two a week) and use the Study Guides before exams you should be absolutely fine! The class has great detailed material, but not too much that you are ever overloaded and I was able to crush every exam without stress. Professor Swenson is really funny but the class didn't get his jokes.
Prof Swenson is a great guy - he truly cares about his students and wants us to succeed. If you email him with an issue, he's super accommodating and helpful. I think his lectures were a bit boring at times, but he can be really funny at times too. He's a sweet older guy that has embraced AI, so we were encouraged to use AI on projects.
Swenson was great! Engaging lessons, hardly any homework, great sense of humor, and interesting/inspirational guest speakers. As long as you read the textbook chapters/take the quizzes consistently, and show up to class, it's easy to do well in his class. I always enjoyed his lectures and would definitely take from him again!
This class was a bore. Lectures would start with a joke or a reference to the football game and then scripted jokes after that. I didn't learn much. Very much a "know what is in my head" type of professor and that is how his test are written. If you are getting a business minor, take other classes where you will learn real, applicable information.
How the class is formatted is terrible! Exams are 70% of your grade so if don't do well on 1 exam it will destroy your grade, There is 1 TA Review for each test, there is no recording if you can't go, there is no practice quizzes, no retakes, can't turn things in late no matter what, the TA slides are not helpful for the whole test! Class is BORING
Friendly professor, poor class structure. I wish there was more opportunity with practice questions or applying marketing concepts rather than memorizing it and being tested on it with it being worth 70% of our grade. Prepare to clutch up exams by memorizing a million marketing terms.
This is my problem with BYU Business intro classes in general, but a lecture read class works well for biology, NOT FOR BUSINESS. If you want to actually learn to be good at marketing, you need to apply it! It's 100% useless to memorize a bunch of random marketing terms that a bad professor reads off of a slideshow someone else made.
If you're not good at memorizing, this class is tough. Tests are 70% of the grade. Midterms include guest-speaker questions, which forces you to go to class. The $100 textbook is required to submit homework assignments (5 in the whole semester...). There's extra credit. Prof. Swenson is nice, but the course feels poorly structured.
Tests are all about memorization. Attendance is not required. (You need to go to guest speakers because those will be on test but not textbook.) Assignments are easy and AI is allowed. 4 points of extra credit throughout the semester. Weekly readings in the textbook, along with weekly quizzes that are open book but limited to 10 minutes.
Professor Swenson is a good person; I just found his lectures very boring. The lectures are very similar to the readings, so you think maybe you can get by with just the online material, but every once in a while, he'll drop a very important piece of information in class. He does this just often enough that missing class isn't really an option.
He is a very nice guy and I liked his humour. Your grade is 70% exams, but he tests you on his lecture slides, not his book. If you study well, his tests are pretty easy. Homework is really easy as well as the 4 assignments you do.
This class was one of the most boring classes i've taken. I went to class 8 times and fell asleep in every lecture because everything he covers is completely repetitive with the book. Anybody could've gotten an 80 on the tests with basic business vocab knowledge and there are a few questions that are always super specific.
