very nice
he's rambles / talks too much
Good prof, lectures are interesting, tough marker, gives lots of feedback. Work load is a bit much for an elective.
Professor Thorn's lectures were pretty boring. He either read off the slides or went off on tangents. In my opinion, he assigned way too many readings for each week. Attendance is mandatory (10%).
I like his lecture styles because he uses (pretty relevant) case studies to make the content easier to understand. "Tangents" are inevitable considering it's a class that invites discussion. Assignments were fair and spaced out so that you didn't have one every so often. Attendance is important for your participation marks.
Go to class and participate for a mark Michael Thorn as a professor actually treats you as an individual human being not just another student in his class. He relies to and sends emails notifying you of things. Do your readings don't be lazy and you will get a good grade. He gives you so many opportunities to earn marks and his lectures are good
For a class at this level, he over-assigns material and readings to the point where I dropped another class just to be in his film class. That being said, I think he's a wonderful prof. His "tangents" in this case were him getting really excited about the material and going off course, and I'd prefer a prof assign a lot of work and love the class.
Amazing prof! He is so passionate about the course. Probably the best prof Ive had within my 4yrs of uni. VERY ORGANIZED & FAIR GRADER. He wants his students to do well & gives great feedback. It is a heavier course for a 128, but he made it very engaging & gave plenty of opportunity to do well in the course. Online readings! Great sense of humour
Would not take a class with him again. Feedback was poor on assignments, too many readings for an upper liberal. Going into the final exam with only 25% of grade. Passionate about material, but does not discuss sociology. Didn't realize i signed up for a history/film course...
There's no textbook, but there are readings he gives you on D2L. He is super unorganized and a tough marker. He gave us a 5 minute exam review.. he is accessible outside of class.
Makes it into a history/film studies course. Very unorganized and does not give constructive feedback. Going into the final exam knowing 25% of my mark. Passionate about the material but tends to go off topic and relate the material to himself. Would not recommend.
Avoid at all costs. For a upper liberal, assigns way too many assignments and tasks. Passionate during lectures, but really unorganized. Tough grader and poor feedback on assignments and essays.
The most caring and passionate prof Ive had. Works hard to make amazing lectures, I actually wanted to participate in discussions which is so rare for me (+ u can get participation marks thru D2L). I felt he genuinely was curious about our insights. Frequently available for office hours, gives thoughtful feedback, and so respectful to his students
My favourite prof! If you love film, then you'll love his lectures, and even if you're not a big film buff you will learn a lot from him. Gives tons of feedback on your assignments and gave us the final exam essay topics a week before the final.
way too hard for a liberal. I showed up to as many classes as I possibly could and can say I put 100% effort into this course and my mark was still lower than both Finance and BUS800 in the same semester. Just avoid unless you are an expert in SOC and willing to attend every single class to get at least an A.
If you see him as your prof, drop out, switch classes, doesn't matter, just DON'T GET HIM. He is NOT clear with his instructions and expects you to know everything. Get ready to be shut down when it comes to asking questions because if he deems it not important, he will yell at you. He is not professional for a professional communications prof.
He does not give clear instructions when it comes to assignments and even when you ask for clarification it doesn't help. However, I found him very entertaining and a decent marker. The class has no midterm, or exam. Just in class assignments and a group project. Honestly if you want to take an easy class, take CMN 279
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Evaluation includes: Attendance marks,Participation marks(a feedback must be emailed at the end of every class), a Presentation, Feedback of 5 Presentations , Annotated Bibliography,a Thesis, Midterm, a Final that includes writing an essay. Got me so distracted and occupied my marks for the other courses dropped significantly.
Michael Thorn is a good human but a terrible professor. He grades too intensely and doesn't give very clear instructions on his assignments. Way too many assignments (which can affect whether you fail or pass). He needs to change his learning structure for the class; It's clearly not effective at all.
Had him for Pop Culture, given a group presentation, an annotated bibliography, and a thesis essay. In my opinion its a lot of work for an elective and a course that is supposed to be easy. Attendance and participation counts for 15% of your final mark which I found quite annoying especially when your tutorial would just be group presentions.
Prof Thorn is a super nice guy who is passionate about film. His lectures can be boring at times, but he always has movies (and jokes) on hand to liven it up. There is quite a bit of reading and papers. You have a group presentation, annotated bibliography, essay proposal, and final essay. He is a tough marker though. Solid choice if you like film!
He is passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches. Sometimes he goes way off-topic during the lectures but apart from that, the discussion in class is very helpful and engaging. Essays are marked tough but fair. Midterm and final are heavy but straightforward.
'Hollywood and society' was more of a film history class than a sociological one. Lectures are a bit boring, which doesn't really help since attendance is worth 15%. If you're not into film/history, I wouldn't take this class.
Thorn did a miraculous job of making fun material unbearable to digest. He may be passionate about the subject matter, but it would've been great if he reserved a slither of that passion for the wellbeing and success of his students. I have never had a teacher make me feel so small and poorly about myself. Avoid interactions with him at all costs
Dr. Thorn is a contract prof, he deals with an exceptional amount of classes/courses, meaning he works hard and has a passion for his profession, I'm writing this due to the fact of the COVID-19 outbreak, he is trying so hard in these tense times & is doing a great job! I've had him before and if you try you'll do amazing, thank you Dr. Thorn!
One of the worst professors I have had at Ryerson so far. If you have a class with him SWITCH OUT. Extremely tough grader, and you can tell he doesn't enjoy anything he teaches so he makes it miserable for his students as well. Expect to be yelled at and humiliated in front of your classmates if you talk, are on your phone or show up late. :)
He uses too many "pop culture references" that have almost nothing to do with the actual course material. He teaches about proper tone in an email but has the nerve not to use a friendly, approachable tone and sounds rude and stuck up.
Don't expect to be babied. You're a grown up and he will expect you to carry yourself as such. Classes are full of content that makes course material topical and relatable.
This teacher is amazing. During the first midterm he gave the class bonus marks because the midterm was all mc instead of containing word problems like he said they would. For the final it covered a chapter outside of the readings he mentioned, and he gave everyone a bonus mark for that. He's also really open to opinions even if there wrong.
the thinks having a phd makes him smart. maybe it does, but certainly doesn't make him intelligent. very individually minded and confused in general. i dont think he's done any research. he just parrots whatever the popular white thinkers of 30 + years ago said.
Just don't take this course with him. His format for the course is bizarre and a large chunk of your grade comes from three weekly discussion posts. For a liberal course, he made it quite boring, hard for no reason and was impossible to impress. Could have been an easy and enjoyable class with more effort on his part.
For a liberal course, this class was way too much work. We had to do a minimum of three discussion posts every week and I know this doesn't sound like a lot but it adds up and it's so annoying and daunting. The discussion posts are also worth way too much. His lectures are quite boring but he is a passionate prof who has interesting things to say.
Interesting that my review was flagged and deleted... regardless I had to drop this course all together bc of this prof. Ppl who have taken this course with a different prof have a fun time but the language this prof uses is way too advanced for whats supposed to be a fun elective. If you study sociology you may like the class but if not ur screwed
I am not usually someone who comes on here and rates my professors. I feel the need to do this for him. He is unbelievably rude. He loves to put students down when they have questions and he belittles students. I do not understand how he's a professor if you have him switch out. Having a PhD doesn't make you a god and he had to realize that.
Micheal is a good professor. Like other courses, go to class, do the readings, turn your assignments in on time, study for midterm/final (which are pretty easy and multiple choice format), and I can't see how you'd get a grade lower than a B. He's worth taking!
He's genuinely a good professor, he does rely heavily on asynchronous lectures which I don't really like considering everything is online although after hearing his reasoning as for why I understand why he has chosen to do so. He does make a lot of star trek references as course material but to his credit he does connect it well to the unit.
Just not a very approachable guy. Makes it hard for us students to want to contact him. The way he talks to us is also condescending. Don't take this class.
This man here is one of the worst professors I have ever had I usually would not have made a post if I honestly didn't think you all need to be warned. He loves to belittle students and when you ask him questions he tells you that you should have been paying attention. For an elective he makes it way too hard.
I agree that Thorn expects you to work for your grade but seriously, if you take the course seriously, pay attention and do the work, you'll get a good grade. Reading some of the other posts here, I have to say, why do so many of your think University courses are supposed to be easy? Why do you think you shouldn't have to pay attention in class?
Michael is smart, funny and kind. He puts a genuine effort into his coursework and lectures. He's one of the few profs I've had at Ryerson who has given me real feedback to adjust my writing and he includes cool pop culture stuff. He's a brilliant dude and will help you work out ideas if you need it. I would seek him out for future courses.
Great sociology course. Learned a lot. Took some effort but he was very helpful in Zoom meetings and helped me improve my grade from proposal to essay. Also introduced us to a lot of films I didn't know about. If your a film buff, you'll love the course.
Second course I took with him. Really good. Lectures are recorded but that's because of Covid. Normally this would be in class. But he keeps things moving by using film and tv clips. He doesn't just use them to be fun. He uses them to explain and make clear AND its entertaining.
He is very knowledgeable but also too knowledgeable, that he answers questions at a level that confuses you even more. His grading criteria are also unclear.
He's a pretty tough marker and only gives negative feedback, never has anything positive to say about your work. Asynchronous lectures but if you have questions during the drop-in meeting, be prepared to feel stupid and belittled. The content of the course is very political-based, which I did not expect as well.
Thorn knows his stuff and makes you work but its worth it. He gives really good feedback but it can be blunt. Really helped my writing. He sometimes get frustrated in Zoom classes, but only when students asked questions he literally just answered 10 secs ago and then he would apologize. I got frustrated too hearing the same question asked 10 times
Amazing class! Really indepth and professor Thorn really, really knows his stuff. He also gives extensions really easy (as long as you ask before the due date) and that saved my ass when other Profs refused my extension requests. If you reach out for help, he'll do everything he can to help!
This guy shows cool video clips and gives extensions without a hassle. Nuff said.
Took SOC202 during W2020 (so it was online). This isnt necessarily a bird course, you need to work for your grade. However, the course material is very easy to engage with (its pop culture) and he seems to be a fair grader. Honestly, I didnt do all the readings and still got an A. Just pay attention to his lectures and you're golden.
Feedback was vague and was quite condescending when you asked for clarification.
It was a real-life course. I will follow Dr. Thorn with his upper liberal studies courses as well. Fair grader, very clear instructions, extensive feedback always, but you have to read and know his lecture slides to get a good grade on the test. Amazing personality as well.
There is something about professor Thorn that keeps me so engaged and enthused during his lectures. He uses real-world examples and talks so casually as if it's a conversation; very easy to follow along and understand what he's saying. TBH I did 0 readings and missed a lot of participation but still got A-! Also, the material itself is fairly easy.
Recorded lectures with corresponding powerpoints that stay up and available throughout the semester for rewatching. Keeps lectures interesting, uses video clips to change it up in an applicable way that actually teaches you something. Super specific about what he wants in assignments, which means if you follow instructions you can get a good grade
I took Thorn's class this summer as an accelerated course. The course content was interesting and had a variety of components to stay engaged like movie clips, youtube videos and readings. Hes a pretty fair grader and gives constructive feedback! I really enjoyed the class and would definitely recommend him as a prof!
If you do your module notes and textbook readings you will get a good mark. In terms of the assignments the prof gives great feedback and is a fair marker. will be taking prof thorn again!
Was a tough course overall. Prof was a very hard apa format grader and it resulted in me losing marks. To do well on the exam all the lectures had to be watched. Lectures were very long if you followed his steps. Was a good summer course but would not have done nearly as well in a 4+ course semester.
Extremely condescending and borderline degrading. Will make you feel very small and bad about yourself for making mistakes or not understanding something. He does not offer helpful feedback and will just belittle you.
He's super condescending if you ask a question and doesn't offer any helpful criticisms. Very much a "figure it out yourself" kind of guy. In his lectures, he often uses unnecessarily difficult words that make you have to Google words and re-read the slides to understand. PhDs don't mean you're better than everyone else - I'd avoid his classes.
Feedback isn't helpful, and like others have said is seriously cutting into the grey area of just personally attacking you instead of writing anything helpful. Will dock marks if your opinion doesn't align with his, even on inconsequential topics, and refuses to admit he's wrong. And I mean wrong on factual things; grammar, names of things, etc..
I'm gonna need Michael Thorn to calm down and understand that he does not know it all. He is very VERY condescending and is very hard to talk to. He is the type of prof that makes u feel like you cannot ask questions. His feedback is AWFUL and they all feel like personal attacks. Honestly save your mental health and choose another course.
This professor is very condescending like others have said, would avoid at all costs. He uses unnecessarily complicated words constantly, where I keep having to google everything he is saying. Even though there is no textbook, the amount of dry 20 page scholarly papers you have to read is ridiculous. Midterm was also very hard and lectures drag on.
The course topics themselves are interesting but unfortunately, I find the lectures to drag on and content to be dry at times. The questions he asks for weekly discussion posts are very wordy and hard to understand and it makes it hard to stay engaged. Also, he's VERY particular about APA citations
I've taken three classes with Thorn and all were great! He makes you work for your grade and expects you to follow instructions pretty exactly, but if you put in the effort, you'll get a good grade. And if you ask for help, he'll meet with you one on one and really help you out. He's also super good with extensions.
I didn't find Thorn to be condescending. He's blunt, but never rude or belittling. His lectures were funny and entertaining though they can be lengthy (theres a lot to cover). Strict grader, but we're in university so there should be no surprises when a prof wants you to work for a grade. If you need help reach out to him, he wants you to do well.
Professor Thorn just seems cruel in the way he marks things and gives feedback. It has discouraged me a whole lot throughout the semester and I don't always agree with what he says. He started off the course by saying this would not be an easy A which is true but I think it set the mood for how the rest of the year went.
He's an overall tough grader and unwilling to consider regrading your assignment even if you meet with him to discuss your complaints. Definitely not a bird course if that's what you were looking for... maybe with a different prof. He also babbles a lot during his lectures. Will probably avoid him for future courses.
Dr. Thorn is definitely a hard marker but I think he's fair. In a course that is considered an "upper-level" course, I would expect that the expectation set are higher and the level of difficulty is greater. He is very clear in what the expectations are. He doesn't fault you for your opinion as long as you can back it up with facts.
his feedback was very critical but extremely helpful and detailed. His lectures were somewhat engaging and he is a fair grader
Fascinating course, can be a tough grader for grammar and staying within APA guidelines which can be shocking if you are not used to the style or from a major that does not care about formatting. Gives a lot of feedback for guidance and clarification. Lectures were asynchronous and kept fresh with the use of a lot of pop culture references.
I can see why people think he's rude, but I don't think this is intentional. He always answered emails quickly and he was funny during his lectures. He did make his lectures mandatory, and I found that he was a bit strict with marking but nothing too crazy. got overall 83 on quizzes, high 70 to low 80 on assignments and you can get the A-.
I had him for a SOC class (liberal) & ended up dropping the course- he was a hard grader, but he was fantastic for CMN. A fair marker , but you have to work for it. He also responds to emails quickly and efficiently, tells you all the information you need to know and answers all questions in a way you understand. Hes also very accommodating.
He gave awful and offensive comments on your assignments. And he marks them really hard. Goodbye, prof.
Full of interesting and engaging content, and his delivery of course material was funny. Accessible outside of class and emails back fast. He helped me work on my thesis and was constantly guiding me in ways that could improve my paper. His feedback is constructive, I personally didn't find his comments offensive. Loved this course, dope prof.
Professor Thorn's class is very engaging and the lectures are very inversive. His feedback on assignments are harsh but helpful and make sure to keep up with his readings otherwise it'll hurt you when it comes to the midterm and exam. If you study those two tests will be very easy. Just put in some effort and you'll be fine.
I took this spring 2021 - a wonderful professor and person! His lectures are very engaging and I learned a lot about my own identity as well as others. He also provides an opportunity for extra credit with weekly discussion posts - this is not at all an additional burden because you don't have to do them all to get 100. His exam was also very fair.
Some people get offended or annoyed with how he answers questions however hes a very thorough prof. He gives all the information you need for assignments and tests on d2l and posts instructions so if students choose not to read or watch the content he puts out its fair for him to respond the way he does especially when he emphasizes to check d2l
Avoid this prof at all costs. He is a very tough grader for no reason and gives the worst feedback.
He gives so much work that are basically full assignments for very little percentages of your mark. Just dont take his classes if you can.
I understand why some people may think he is rude, but I don't agree. This prof wants you to do your own due diligence. All he is asking for is competence. His lectures are extremely entertaining and make it easy to learn new concepts thoroughly. He has made me fall in love with gender and sexuality studies after a slew of lacklustre profs.
Dr. Thorn has been an amazing professor so far (I am writing this on week 6/12). He is extremely clear when providing instructions for assignments and explains common mistakes. He gives very helpful assignment feedback, and his sense of humour also make lectures entertaining and engaging even online!
Prof Thorn is a very tough grader & super particular about everything but I appreciated how organized he was. If you're lookin for a bird course, avoid him. But if you're actually looking for something interesting that you'll have to really put in work for, consider it. I'm convinced the other people on here just didn't try. He's actually hilarious
I can see why Prof Thorn might not appeal to everyone's learning style but I actually really appreciated how much he pushes students, he is blunt but very detailed and concise in his feedback. He genuinely wants everyone to produce their best work and be competent. I didn't find him rude at all, he made me actually LOL in every lecture.
I'm convinced the ppl who said he's rude on here are overly sensitive unless he's changed his ways drastically. He is a tougher grader but he simply wants everyone to just reach their highest potential and be competent adults. Most engaging lectures I've had for online course by far, has a great sense of humour. Highly knowledgeable & amazing prof
His lectures are very easy to follow and they're quite entertaining. He's kind of a tough grader and the feedback he gives is very honest, which comes across as rude to some, but it is well-intended. Participation marks make up 20% of the final grade, so you have to actively keep up with course material. The course was overall not too difficult.
Amazing professor. The class was done online because of the pandemic so lectures were pre-recorded for the most part but the most engaging ones I've had. His humour might not be for everyone but I found him to be hilarious and always enjoyed the material because of it. Can be a bit of a stickler with grading but provides all the info you'll need.
Prof Thorn is one of the rare instructors I've had at Ryerson that actually cares about what he's teaching, he's very passionate and his lectures are both engaging and hilarious. I agree with the other reviews, he makes you really work for a good grade but I think he's very fair. I'd love to take another class from him, absolutely brilliant man.
Idk why people are hating on this prof in the reviews. Honestly, if you just put in a little time to watch his pre-recorded lectures and understand the material you will be fine. I pretty much breezed through the course apart from the essay which takes a good amount of effort. Would definitely recommend in the future.
I'm so confused by the reviews saying how rude Prof Thorn is. He seemed perfectly reasonable to me, I feel like those people aren't used to University expectations. Honestly just follow instructions properly and do your best, you'll be fine. Super engaging lectures even while being prerecorded, hilarious, direct, and passionate about the material.
Professor Thorn was by far my favourite Prof of my semester. He was super engaging in his lectures and you can tell he was sooo passionate about the material which actually makes learning about it more interesting. On the writing assignments he is very fair and any comment saying he was rude, I would just say he is direct about areas of improvement
I literally tried looking for Spring/Summer courses to take with this prof for my upper liberals because of how much I enjoyed this class with him this semester. Considering how many profs out there don't care, I really appreciated how much Prof Thorn ACTUALLY cared, hence the emphasis on the quality of work we submit. Really enjoyed his lectures.
Willing to accommodate your needs, caring but also very passionate about the stuff he teaches. Maybe a little too passionate for some people but he is willing to help out if you seek help and that can help you do well in his class! I didn't read the textbook LOL, if you wanna take it with prof Thorn, take it online.
Took the class in an online format due to the pandemic this last semester, he'll say textbook is mandatory but you can get away with not reading it. Extremely detail oriented prof, expects the same out of students but makes your work become stronger because of it. I think he genuinely has good intentions, really great course material, I enjoyed it.
Professor Thorn is very direct and some might mistake that for him being rude. He was always very thorough and clear with his instructions, and genuinely wants to see his students do well. The class is not difficult at all if you put the work in.
I thought he would be terrible because of the ratings but his class was my favourite honestly. I finished with a 4.00 and I got good grades on all of his assignments. Midterm was an easy 100% and I've never gotten perfect on an exam. Exam was a bit harder. He does mark a little tougher but if you follow instructions, you should be fine.
I came back to write a review after my experience with Prof Thorn this last semester and I'm happy to see the improvement in his ratings. I'm not sure if he changed his teaching style or what, but either way, his class ended up being the best class I had all academic year. Very passionate about the material, interesting topics, and hilarious.
Best class in my academic career. Take his class, you will not regret it.
One of the rudest professors. He is very discouraging with his feedback. All of his comments bring you down, are unprofessional and feel like personal attacks. Never heard a professor give "constructive criticism" that begins with "okay like". To add on, he is a very tough grader. Avoid this class if you can.
People's ratings of this prof made me scared. However, he ended up being one of the best profs I have had so far! He is very passionate about the course as witnessed in his lectures and all the effort he makes with videos etc. He is critical about guidelines, can be harsh, but genuinely cares and helps students improve their writing.
A very dry talker, but easy marker. Tests especially are super easy, and as long as your essay is well-researched you'll get a good mark on that too. Marks for attendance, but he also shares important information in lectures so it's worth it to attend. You don't need the textbook, but it makes the essay a bit easier to write.
This course ended up being my least favorite sociology class I have ever taken. His lectures are a waste of time and money; especially as a commuter (but are mandatory with the exception of one grace period). Seems like a nice and smart human, but it's blatantly clear he loves to hear himself speak. Needs to shorten his lectures BIG TIME.
He is a good teacher, clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about the material but his lectures often go over time and the entire class falls behind for weeks. A fair marker if you've done the research but his feedback often feels mean, defensive, and personal. Lots of online readings, shows a lot of videos in class.
Class is ongoing, but I really like this Professor, his lectures do run for the full time but lectures are entertaining (as they are all about Hollywood movies) watch a lot of films in class. He is very passionate about films, should be easy marks as long as you pay attention and show interest in the topics of film.
This professor was awesome. His course material was very interesting and he explained everything in great detail for, an online class. When you needed an extension for an assignment due to personal circumstances, he definitely understood and tried to help out. Moreover, his feedback was great. It has helped me improve my writing and citing skills.
I like movies so I enjoyed his class, but if you're not super interested, his lectures can feel lengthy especially since he goes on tangents and attendance is mandatory. Definitely a tough grader if you don't put in the work and he gives very direct feedback. Overall I enjoyed it, but be prepared to work.
The professor is funny and tries to interject personal experiences and extra examples into his lectures. There are many videos and pieces of media shown in the class. A portion of the mark is participation and attendance. The essay is broken down into 3 steps and you are given feedback during each so that your essay is as good as it can be.
This prof was mean and communicated poorly with his students ( as a communication teacher). He was a harsh grader and had a lot of work for his class.
This class is ongoing, however I wanted to comment about people saying that this professor is mean and harsh. He's not mean, just straightforward. He cares about his students and their success. I think students, especially first or second year ones, need to understand that not every professor will have the same teaching style.
I would never take this professor again, I would suggest running from this professor if you can. He is very harsh and communicates brashly and rudely. Likely in an effort to be clear but just ends up adding a lot of unnecessary tension to the course. His lectures are so long, with so many videos that really don't need to be there. VERY HARSH MARKER
Professor Thorn is straightforward and helpful, if you take his feedback personally it may seem rude but you can tell he just wants to steer students in the right direction and provide opportunities for improvement. Really funny, may fall behind on lectures but likes to clarify everything. Fair assessments and good, fair grader. Would def retake.
Lots of the readings and examples in this course are his journals and essays. Impossible to cite anything because he does not want you to cite how APA instructs you to do it but the way HE instructs you to do it. Literally created his own citation format. Lectures are long and boring and he falls behind on the course schedule very fast.
Is an easy course, but for some reason he marked extremely hard with very confusing feedback. None of the feedback given on my assignments helped me understand how to do better.
pre-recorded lectures that are long but he really knows and cares about what he is talking about. a lot of his feedback can seem harsh but it really is constructive criticism, he is super accessible outside of class to clarify and help you for assignments. the tests were a bit long and questions were excessive but open booked.
Lectures are very long and usually boring, he would take all of the class time down to the last minute if you actually wanted to stay in class. He grades pretty hard I would say for it being a liberal class. Mid prof, but for some others they might enjoy him. Not enjoyable for me however.
I loved SOC 107 with Dr. Thorn, super interesting course. Great lectures and perfect for cineplex since he uses tons of video clips. The assignments build toward the final paper so you get useful feedback along the way. Go to every lecture and make note of what he emphasizes and you can kill the open book exams. Hope to take more courses with him.
Amazing prof. He makes the lectures so engaging; it was without a doubt my favourite class this semester. Grading is based on a few factors, however he offers a lot of feedback to ensure you perform well on the final paper. Just make sure you follow instructions. The midterm was really easy, and the final exam was a little more difficult.
He is actually a very intelligent and passionate professor which you don't see very often. Grades tough for papers and is very direct, but it's all in the best interest of the student. Make sure to review his slides before exams and COME TO CLASS!! Just coming everyday can boost your grade since attendance/participation is 15%
He's not an easy grader but with that being said, he's actually passionate about the material and I do think he genuinely wants students to improve critical thinking and writing skills. Personally, I'm super confused by people who say his feedback is rude? He's straightforward, no fluffy hiding around the bush. One of my fave profs I've ever had.
This course had an annotated bibliography, essay outline, and final essay for assignments - all of which he was a pretty tough marker and not super clear on his feedback. Midterm and final exams were online and open book which was helpful. He's a pretty stern prof but if you show up and follow instructions you'll do good in his class.
This course was an intensive course and it was in only five days and you had to do the class work after 6 o'clock because the class was starting 9 AM to 6 PM every day and it was a lot of work doing research writing paper doing participation, discussions and a lot of stuff and most of the people only took it for credit.
Out of 8 years of Post Secondary, this professor was my worst! He made me cry and ignored my email telling him this. If you want your self-esteem and mental health intact, AVOID! He makes up his own APA, talks in riddles, and lacks the social skills/respect necessary to be an effective teacher.
I took three courses with Thorn and all were great. Yeah, he's a demanding, no nonsense prof but if you follow instructions and do the work you'll get a good grade. Very accessible over zoom and is always willing to help.
Tough but fair prof. Be prepared to work for your grade but you'll learn a lot. If you ask for help, he'll give it. Tests are pretty easy. It's the essay you need to work hard on. His emails and comments are blunt.
My most memorable class. The lectures and topics were interesting, and he showed many movie clips throughout the semester to convey his points. He is a pretty tough marker, but makes up for it by being so willing to discuss and answer any questions. He was always passionate about the information he taught. Honestly a very fun course.
Overall he was a good prof. Only things I would say I didn't like about him was he made attendance mandatory and his lectures were very boring.
Tough yet fair grader. He gives good feedback and is willing to clarify any questions you have. I enjoyed his lectures, which were mostly analyzing movie clips. Attendance and textbook are mandatory, but I didn't use the book and ended up fine. Seems like he genuinely wants people to succeed, even though he is extremely blunt
It's clear he is passionate about his lecture material. If only his assignments instructions were as clear as that. It's difficult to know what he wants because he isn't clear/specific enough in the syllabus. He's not mean or anything, just very disorganized, and as someone else here has noted I swear he follows his own version of APA.
i thought it was just a tough love kind of thing at first but he is just plain rude, and i do not recommend him at all if that isn't your style. i did however love going to this class, as he's a good lecturer. grading / assignment expectations aren't clear but he has a board open for questions all semester.
I can see why students would not like Dr. Thorn, just because he is very stern when he talks and is a harsh grader. My tips for this class: - Attend every lecture - No need to buy the textbook - Dr. Thorn gives students access to his published work, use them as a structural reference for your thesis proposals/essay!
Not a bad course, I just found the lectures a bit boring and I didn't like he posts the lecture slides after he finishes the unit. Not a hard marker and assessments are not that hard either. I don't find him mean, rude, or blunt. He gives constructive feedback that is fair, and if you want a good grade, follow the feedback he gives you.
Micheal is a great professor, he explains content very well and in depth. He likes to use movies and external movies, tv shows and other media in his lectures. Ive taken 3 different sociology classes with him and the course breakdown is nearly identical. Great prof, 10/10
Overall great Prof. Readings aren't necessary. He's passionate about his material. Clear grading criteria. Will help you if you ask. He has specific APA criteria, so be aware to follow it closely. He can come off blunt but is due to his busyness. Participation and attendance matters. If you show up and listen, you'll do well. Overall fun course.
He seems passionate about what he talks about in lectures, however he is a very hard marker
Follow his direct instructions on all the assignments and you'll be fine. His exams are online and heavily based on his lectures.
Dr. Thorn is a professor who is very passionate about the topics he teaches. He can tend to grade a bit tough when it comes to papers, however, if you use the resources and follow the instructions provided that will usually set you up for a good grade. I would definitely enjoy taking another course taught by him, overall great professor.
Prof. Thorn is very direct and organized and I appreciate that. What you see/hear is what you get. This course was heavy and he warns you about that. As long as you stay on course and follow his instructions you'll be fine.
2nd course I've taken with Prof Thorn and it didn't disappoint. Focus on the lectures and take notes-most of quizzes are things he mentions in lectures. For assignments just follow his instructions, he gives good feedback if you ask.
I thought he was a good professor. His feedback was direct which I usually prefer and he made a bunch of disclaimers that he wasn't trying to be mean. I thought his grading was fair though tougher than some other professors I've had. The course was interesting and he was a good lecturer though the history of the film industry was boring.
Professor Thorn is very organized and has a system. Make sure you memorize his course outline because he mentions EVERYTHING in it and would like things done a certain way. However, with that being said, he is a very good prof. Interesting lecturer, easy grader, and good content. As long as you play by his rules you are destined to get an A.
One of the best profs. Yes he has expectations from his students but it's reasonable. Grading is very fair. His classes are fun and he knows what he's talking about. Would 100% take him again
Clearly very passionate about this subject, but classes were extremely long and boring, and had mandatory attendance. He is frequently passive aggressive in his commentary, and provides minimal help regarding citations. Participation is important. Do not expect this class to talk about current day pop culture. Exams are all online though.
Long, heavy, boring, and mandatory lectures. Not what I expected from a pop culture class, veers away from my expectations of "pop culture." Very tough grader, ESPECIALLY when it comes to citations... Exams are online open book, so that's the only positive...
Classes were in person and lecture heavy. Overall the class was very interesting and the prof lets you join in for your participation mark. He's very particular about how you write his papers and weekly discussion posts but if you just follow his instructions and pay attention in class you will get a good nark.
Sassy man apocalypse. His feedback seemed so backhanded and rude and was not approachable at all. He posts everything online including online final exams all from the textbooks and lectures but attendance is still graded.
sassy man alert!!! he was nice and the lecture were fun as he added either big mouth or south park clips into the lecture. he was an pretty nice grader as i missed a few things, but his feedback was for sure sassy. you dont have to go to the lecture as he added everything on online but attendance was being marked.
He has marks for participation and attendance, which is pretty easy. His midterm and exam were online and multiple choice but it was a bit difficult. His lectures are a bit boring after a while but you have to keep going because of attendance. He graded the final essay pretty easily.
One of the most organized and passionate profs I ever had. He clearly states the grading criteria on both the syllabus and in lectures. He also provides examples of what he wants, his feedback may seem harsh but remember this is a first-year course intended for academic growth and transitioning into post-secondary. Attend lectures and participate!
Interesting course, however was very long and mundane. For a pop-culture class there was hardly any relevant references to modern-day pop-culture. Participation matters, so be aware, also online tests so a bonus. Pick an essay topic you can argue!
Extremely tough grader.
Dr.Thorn is very passionate about what he teaches and gives you good feedback. The course included 3 assignments in addition to an online Midterm and a final exam. He gives you very detailed feedback about the assignments. He is a fair grader but definitely not a tough one. His lectures were too long but sometimes quite interesting.
I love Prof Thorn. Once you get used to his marking scheme and what he likes, you're good to go for all of his classes. Can be a bit blunt with answering obvious questions, so just look over the syllabus for assignments. He makes them as detailed as possible and he goes over them too. Teaches well and online exams are not too hard either.
No matter how passive aggressive or high-strung he appears, Dr. Thorn loves being a professor, and it shows. He provides SUPERB feedback on writing assignments, the best in all of my years in undergrad. Yes, long and sometimes dry lectures but his passion tends to draw you back in. He wants you to work very hard, but it's worth it!
Extremely tough grader and brutally honest in feedback. Midterm/final exam were easier than the assignments. His lectures are thorough and detailed. He appreciates it if students participate. He is passionate about what he teaches. Great lecturer and helpful when asking him questions (tho he makes it seem that some questions asked are stupid)
By far one of my favourite classes I've taken in university so far. His lectures are really interesting and the content is engaging. He provides a lot of feedback on assignments and his instructions are very clear. If you follow his instructions and watch the lectures you will do well. I definitely recommend taking his classes.
This was one of the most fun classes I've ever taken. Very engaging lecturer and would teach concepts through different movie and tv show clips, and taking it in the movie theater made it that much more engaging. He is a little tough on students and his feedback can be cold. but i really recommend it
He gives attendance marks and he teaches good during lectures but is a bit of a hard grader for the essay but he is a normal professor nothing much to say.
very direct and honest, wants to be as clear as possible. quite nice, funny, and gives very well put-together lecture. follow instructions, do the work, participate, and you'll do good. I don't understand when people complain about attendance or participation being mandatory, its school, what did you expect.
Passionate prof who makes lectures engaging with media clips. Grading is tough but fair - just follow instructions and you'll do well. unstuck AI was a lifesaver for prepping for exams.
I took this class as a lower level liberal studies course. Due to majority of your grade coming from a research thesis essay, it's not a super easy course that you can just cruise through. He takes attendance every class. can be a bit mundane but he's very passionate on pop culture. Midterm & final are online!!!
Pretty good professor. No complaints. I think the grading scheme is pretty fair and assignments and exams are all doable
I hated pop culture so much. It was so boring and he would take up the entire time for the lecture and attendence was mandatory. If youre good at writing youll do fine in the course but man those lectures were brutal. he also thought it was a sexuality and politics course and wouldnt stop talking about donald trump. Dont take this class.
To Michael Thorn, you are a passionate individual with valuable takes and knowledge. But goodness me he does not stop yapping. That, coupled with a generally cold and condescending demeanor, leads to and all around unenjoyable experience. Genuinely just a mean-spirited person who puts down anyone who dares to ask an "obvious" question.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. he is stuck up as hell and thinks he knows everything. He gives three page instructions and expects you to literally follow every detail. He marks extremely hard on the final essay. Avoid at all costs
Professor Thorn is an exceptional educator who genuinely cares about his students' success. His thoughtful feedback and support made a significant impact on my learning in CSOC 603. Highly recommend taking his course!
I've had Thorn for SOC202 and SOC633, and I've genuinely enjoyed both. He can be blunt but never malicious. His feedback is fair and detailed, which I'm thankful for considering he has hundreds of students each semester. He clearly wants students to succeed by providing clear assignment outlines, quick email replies, and after-class support.
I loved Dr. Thorn. He is funny and tries to use pop culture in lectures to keep it interesting. His grading criteria is very clear and specific, just make sure you follow it exactly. His exams can be tricky, but they are online and open book so totally doable! Just make sure to attend class and participate for those marks! You will love him.
Wasn't a fan of his teaching style, I found him boring to be honest but I have to respect his assignments and grading technique. If you go to class and follow his assignment instructions to a T you'll do great.
This was my third class with Prof Thorn and I have no regrets. The breakdown for all of his courses are the same, so once you know how to successfully follow his instructions, everything is a breeze. Don't need to focus too much on the readings as exams are largely based on his lectures. Honestly, one of my fav profs in the Sociology Department.
Professor Michael Thorn can be a little bit intense and lacks some social awareness at times (ironically), but overall his lectures are some of the best I have had and he offers amazing insights into sociological perspectives. Participating and engaging with the content is the best way to receive a good mark and learn the most as well.
AVOID! literally gives 5 pages of instructions for all assignments, like your life depends around it. fluds d2l with posts about the same subject. Overanalyzes, so confusing to follow. never had a prof this overboard to the point where you are left more confused.
Professor Michael Thorn's class is frustrating. He mostly plays YouTube videos instead of teaching, enforces mandatory attendance, and won't let students leave after the break. His grading is overly harsh, with long, confusing instructions. Even strong effort gets low marks. Take SOC107 with someone else if you can- course isn't worth the stress.
As someone who is heavily interested in popular culture, he taught greatly as someone who is very much passionate in popular niche media. His attitude is a tough and sometimes cold but his lectures often sway that opinion into someone who is simply passionate. The thesis assignments itself is not very hard if done carefully and to the criteria.
i was a little nervous to take class with this prof after reading some reviews but genuinely if you have respect for him and go to class hes really good. a lot of people said he is "sassy" but so far the feedback ive recived has been really helpful. makes the classes engaing and understandable. i would definetly take class with him again
One of the best professors I've had so far. His lectures are deeply informational. Progressive thinker, exact, clear, brilliant communicator. I hope I get to take more of his courses.
One of my favourite teachers so far at TMU. His classes are very engaging and interesting, it makes you want to learn. You can tell he enjoys what he is discussing in this class. The class is great as long as you follow his very detailed outlines. I hope to take more classes with him!
Dr. Thorn is easily my favourite professor of my two years at TMU. He is engaging in lectures, asking questions and cultivating a class discussion. His feedback on assignments is extremely thorough and you are likely to receive a good mark if you follow his very in-depth instructions.
I hate this prof with my entire being. His classes are SO boring and his assignment instructions are literally 5 pages long but just make you to be even more confused. He is very stuck up and really stubborn. avoid at all cost
Extremely blunt, like borderline rude but lowkey its easy to get a good mark just read through the instructions and go to class. Textbooks are mandatory and he will make you use them in your assignments but typically only pep
oh my god he is the most painful prof I've had to deal with for multiple semesters. his classes are boring. he just talks and talks. his instructions for assignments are like 6 pages long and make you even more confused. attendance is recorded every class for part of your grade. if you can escape him, save yourselves before it's too late.
I have taken multiple courses with him and he just repeats the same content he teaches for one course in the other. He is the most boring prof I have ever had. The feedback he gives on assignments sound condescending and rude.
if you show up to the lectures you'll be fine. attendance is mandatory and he can be really blunt especially on assignment feedback but he's a nice person and the use of videos and stuff in class makes it a lot more engaging
This prof is great! I don't agree with any of the negative reviews. He is passionate and his lectures are interesting. He also tells you exactly how to excel in this course, so it is very easy to do well, you just have to pay attention and read the assignment instructions. Overall, great prof and awesome guy! The midterm + final is also very easy
This is probably your best bet if you were late choosing an elective and need a semi-easy course. Professor Thorn is a genuinely interesting guy and not a bad person IMO. The hate he receives shouldn't scare you. Yes, attendance is mandatory, but it's a good way to force you to go to school. The films he chooses are entertaining to keep you awake.
Very passionate about course content. If you show up, you will do well. He can be harsh with his comments and feedback but it is clearly because he wants students to do well. His assignments' criteria is detailed and so you know exactly what you need to do to get a good mark. I would recommend him if you are interested in learning about sociology.
Professor Thorn tends to have really tedious assignments that require a lot of attention to his instructions however in trying to be specefic I found he just confused me more. He is a nice enough guy but between his grading criteria and mandatory attendence the course ended up feeling like a chore for me.
Prof Michael talks a lot in class, which can make the lectures feel boring, especially since attendance is mandatory but it's all on films so not too bad. However, if you carefully read and follow the instructions, it's easy to get a decent mark. Since the midterm and final are both online, the course itself feels easy. Win prof.
Overall his lectures are interesting but is a tough grader in general just follow the instructions and this class will be easy. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY!! he's sneaky and if people leave after attendance he will make you email him to cross check who came and who left. Also the hate he gets is uncalled for he's like Sheldon from TBBT.
Honestly, the best SOC prof at TMU. He is funny and really enjoys teaching. There are a lot of cool class discussions and videos that he presents in class. He is very particular about following instructions, so make sure you are not missing ANYTHING before you hand in an assignment. But if you do what he asks, you are guaranteed an A.
I enjoyed SOC 633, however be sure to read his instructions and "tips and hints" he provides. If you follow that closely you'll likely get a good mark. The midterm and final were online which was nice!
I hate sociology so no one who teaches it will seem that great
His APA guidelines are absolutely abyssmal. He expects absolute perfection when doing citations and his instructions are pages and pages of mind numbing information. Relies heavily on participation in class. He is truly a once in a lifetime experience and it is not positive. Listen to the reviews and avoid him at all costs.
He is very particular about following instructions and VERY strict on APA citations. From high school until now, I never had anyone critique my APA until him. He is also a very strict marker. Even after following his instructions, it always seemed like it was never good enough. Would avoid him at all costs.
He talks a lot in the lecture and do not stop till the lecture ends. You feel like he's teaching himself instead of the students. However, he's not tough when it comes to grading, he explains the assignments clearly in class and Brightspace as well. He gives clear and detailed instructions.
Taken as an intensive, be prepared to spend the full day in class. Gives detailed feedback and assignments are easy as long as you follow the clearly outlined intructions. Watch the movies before the course starts if you don't want homework, readings aren't nessesary. Can participate via discussion posts. Prof is knowledgage and cares a lot!
HORRIBLE. WORST PROFF EVER.
This the only review u need, fr. He records lectures, posts transcripts if ur too lazy to watch, posts slides (basic but sum profs don't smh). U can resubmit stuff 24h after the deadline with no late penalty, n his feedback is actually helpful. No glaze but bro's the goat—just follow his (kinda picky) DETAILED instructions and u'll be fine trust
Took this as an intensive course. Professor Thorn is very passionate about teaching and knowledgable about this course. Daily participation in class discussions is important. There was daily readings, quizzes and discussion posts plus a big final paper that is split into 3 parts. He is a fair marker but you need to put in some effort to do well.
Horrible Prof IMO even though I got an A-
This course is content heavy. And there's a bunch of assignments- a lot, and the criteria is very specific. The instructions for these assignments could be 3-4 pages in some instances, so there's a lot of reading and lot to follow. He grades exactly on the instructions he gives you. I noted that he doesn't give 90+ on assignments easily.
He has an interesting lecture style, but the information and references he uses is engaging and funny. There are super clear instructions and literally every question can be answered by just reading them. Participation and attendance is mandatory (attendance sheet passed around twice during class).
approachable instructor who knows exactly what he expects from his students. he ensures you don't miss anything important. What I appreciated most was his detailed feedback on assignments, it's clear, constructive, and genuinely helpful for improving your work. If you follow his guidance and stay engaged, you'll learn a lot in his class!
He talks about political subjects in EVERY single class. This class is called The Entertainment Industry yet he mentions Trump and politics every class. The units he teaches in this class do not relate to the Entertainment industry so do not expect to actually learn something about the industry. It is about politics NOT sociology. Do not recommend.
Interesting lectures, but wow this guy is the most unapproachable person ever. Feedback on assignments are so rude it's not even constructive criticism at this point. His feedback just made me feel dumb and like I wasn't good enough for this course. Make sure your citations are perfect or you might get unnecessary marks off. Avoid him at all costs.
dont pick, he doesnt make any sense when it comes to anything.
Overall okay class, exam and midterm is online openbook. but this class is NOT A BIRD COURSE. he is a tough grader and lectures are not engaging
Professor Thorn is a great professor. Those who do not agree and do bad in his classes likely do not read assignment instructions. His lectures may seem lengthy but they are interesting, informative and use great examples.
Dr. Thorn is an incredible professor. His lectures are always very engaging, and he is passionate about the material. He is a pretty hard grader, so do not take one of his courses if you're looking for a mark boost. Despite all of this, he offers incredible feedback and does take note of individual improvement. He is one of the best for sure!
Falsely accused me of academic dishonesty. I've never been so offended considering I work hard on my papers. This was honestly the worst experience I've had with a professor.
First-year students should be aware that this is not a bird course. The workload and level of difficulty are higher than expected and may exceed that of some required courses.
Professor Thorn is a great professor. This is the third class I've taken with him online, and I've only had good experiences. His lecture style is very interesting; he posts pre-recorded lectures, which is really convenient, and I learned a lot from his classes as a non-arts major. Follow his instructions, and you'll do great!
don't understand all the hate he gets, i enjoyed his lectures. attendance and participation are 15%, but you can do your weekly participation on a discussion post! there's only like 3 assignments and they all tie into the final essay at the end and the midterm and final are open book and online!!
I love professor Thorn! His lectures are super engaging and his instructions are very clear. A lot of your grade is just showing up and interacting with the lecture, but if you don't feel comfortable speaking in class you can submit a response on D2L. The only other grades are from easy D2L unit quizzes and three assignments for a final essay.
Honestly my favourite prof at TMU so far. I'd commute 2 hours for this class, and it was worth it because his lectures are engaging. His grading criteria tells you exactly what you need to do to get an A on assignments, and he provides samples from past students which are a huge help.
This class is not a bird course unless you are genuinely interested in the themes. It is content-heavy and can feel a bit demanding despite being asynchronous. Weekly quizzes, bi-weekly discussion posts (easy but should know weekly content), and there is very specific instructions for the 3 assignments, which I personally liked but can be a lot.
