Toney is very clear and presents concepts slowly and thoroughly. He also provdies online notes which are very helpful. Tests are not tricky and extremely easy. The only downside is that he gave my class online homework that was time consuming.
Toney was a good guy except when it comes to grading HE DOESN"T CURVE AND DOESN"T SAY SO TILL THE END. When i asked him for grade on the final he blew up in my face and was quiet rude to me. He might seem nice but he's pretty much a Jerk onlin
Not the most exciting lectures, but they were clear enough. The homework wasn't too bad and the tests were fair as well. His preposted notes for the whole quarter were pretty helpful too.
the best science professor i have had @ davis. He does not try, but works hard in making his students understand the Chem. Teaches according to the preference of the students, and on the hard parts goes very slowly. Allows u to ask ?s in class. wont move on if someone is unclear about the concepts
This was my 2nd time taking this class. Hardly ever went, but seem like good teacher when I was there. I agree with the comments under this one. The tests were MUCH easier than the chem 128a class I had before.
Dr. Toney is a great teacher, genuinely interested in the success of his students. Though he is pressured to do research, he is willing to make his students a priority... a trait often not found amongst university professors. Very receptive to students questions in class. Very helpful. Family man.
He is very clear with what he wants you to know. Tests were reasonable. But he's often late to office hours. A nice guy though. Highly recommended.
AGGGGGHHH
Hella boring, hard to stay awake at 8am! class too hard and too much work for a 2 unit class!
This class wasnt too bad. Dont even bother going to the lectures cuz he cant really teach. Just read the book yourself. He doesnt curve, but his midterms and final are EXACTLY like the practice ones he gives which is nice. Overall, this class was ok
Not a very helpful teacher, in office hours or in class. Class itselfwas extremely boring and almost pointless to go to.
Class sucked, and his boring teaching style didn't help at 8 in the morning. No curve hurts gradewise too. Know the notes and the practice midterms and you should be ok. Watch out for the 2nd midterm though
Unclear, lazy, mumbles; makes staying awake near utterly impossible.
lectures using powerpoint (seemed to be a summary of the chapters and nothing else)...does not go over enough examples on how to do the calculations and review session before the midterm was not very helpful..
This was his first quarter teaching BIS 102 (usually teaches OChem). Power point slides not useful. No practice test to refer to before the midterm. Midterm 1 wouldn't have been as difficult if he had gone over practice problems in better detail. Very vague in his lecture...
Worst bio-chem professor ever! First time teaching bio-chem, and should be the last! Even though I did well in the class, I had to work my butt off studying on my own for the class. Very unhelpful, unclear, and not understanding. I'd recommend Hilt over Toney.
I don't recommend this professor. I really DON'T. He is really nice but he is terrible. You basically have to read right off the book to learn. Plus, no one goes to his lectures.
this guy sucks so much that i must comment now. first time teaching 118B...he thinks we are spoiled since we want practice exams...and he mumbles when lecturing so no one understands and pretty much falls asleep. and half of his test were multiple choice! god! i hope he doesnt teach ochem series anymore!
Prof. Toney is a terrible lecturer. His voice is extremely low and he does not explain concepts well at all. Take another professor if possible.
First time ever teaching CHEM 118B, and you can really tell. His classes are so boring and you can't even ubderstand him. He is not helpful and even tell you to shut up... You have to study on your own.... I will recommend Nasiri even if her tests are harder at least you enjoy the class...
geez, why all the negative comments. I think he's doing an alright job. He kinda sounds like Clinton. But, Yes, he does give MC exams, but i actually prefer them over tantillo's exams. Its O-Chem what else can be said ;)
Midterm was 80 percent multiple choice.. Class Avg = 55
He's a nice guy, a bit green when it comes to teadching 118B seeing as it's his first time. He's not as bad as the other comments make him to sound. He's helpful in office hour. His mechanisms aren't as pretty as Tantillo's...powerpoint is a bit disappointing...but other than that class isn't that bad. Multiple choice does suck though...
I don't know how this person below can put all 5's saying that ochem is easy & that he's clear. Take my advice (from someone who is doing just a bit above avg but still struggling): just take someone else. You'll be better off, trust me. Hard to pay attention in class because he's boring and doesn't teach the material well. PASS HIM UP.
terrible teacher. snooty. wasted my time. made me hate ochem more than i did before.
OH Shi@! You beter do well on the midterms cause his final is a B*^ch!! Its long, multi-choice and tedious. Some people while I was takin' the final were cursin' cause it was so hard. But the curve should be cool... it is O'chem though...so be prepared!!
this teacher is a nice guy but terrible teaching skills so you'll need to self study. midterms were fair, but final frickin hard and long. dunno what he was thinking. hope the curve is low. his tests are mostly multiple choice...so not much partial credit is given. if you get him, get a tutor and do practice exams from shore, patten and nasiri.
Toney is a very nice professor who is genuinley interested in helping the students. His lectures are not very organized and sometimes its hard to tell what exactly he's focusing on for the exams. Regardless, I thought they were fair and he is the only chem professor I have ever seen that gave such generous re-grades.
Constantly missed office hours (the one time he was in I had to talk over the sound of him eating gummy worms). Who waits for final scores till March 27th. He just can't handle the fact that everyone knows he is a tool and that he messed up on the final like all the midterms. Powerpoint made it hard to pinpoint what was important. Wutever Bill Clin
He is the worst chem professor I ever had so far. He does not care about his students and very rude to the class ("shut up class!"...which he thinks is very funny). The midterms are not that hard, but the final is. If you want to learn something, do not take him.
Horrible lecturer, manageable tests. He likes to go over physical chemistry stuff in organic chemistry class. Study his lecture notes well. He doesn't test us on any new reactions not covered during his lectures.
hahah these ratings are funny.. but seriously, i dunno what you all are cryin about. Toney is like one of the funniest teachers i've had. His tests are reasonable and his bill clinton voice is hilarious, what a guy! he pwns yall, stop cryin

Strangely enough, even though his voice is kind of flat I like the fact that he doesn't get pushed around by the mass of students and has control of the class. He tries to answer every question asked during lecture so that's kinda nice. His tests were okay but he likes to add slides to the lecture notes the night before which is rather annoying.
Great guy, horrible teacher. I don't doubt the guy really knows biochem, he enjoys his work. But for BIS102 he made outlines of the book and basically read them to us. To make matters worse, the book wasn't that great. You can't fail his class, it's just you don't learn anything. Less than 30-35% but I got a C. Tests were random.
Odd how so many have given him poor ratings - he is really quite the genius at chemistry. His exams are predictable, so know how it works! He doesnt try to hate you or kill you with the midterms. Attend lectures - odd humor, as others pointed out, but really, you will see a different take on chemistry from a physical perspective...
Smart guy, but not cut out to lecture to large groups of students. O-chem isn't my thing, so I hate the class for that reason. Tests seem OK, curve is set so the average is a C+ (instead of the usual C). No hwk is assigned. There are probably better profs out there, but he's not the worst either.
I swear he lectures ****. Watch the guy stumble around and mess up equations because he is incoherent, it's hysterical. I taught myself chem because the lectures didn't help at all. Avoid this guy if you can.
He wasn't a very good lecturer, but I could tell he was a very smart guy. His sleeping-inducing monotone voice and sloppy board work make lectures pretty pointless to attend. The tests aren't bad, but you'll have to rely on the book to learn most of the material. Read it and do the suggested problems and you should be fine.
His lectures are so boring that I fell asleep in class every time in the front row...and I'm not that type of person. His notes are so messy and he is always yawning and sighing. He makes me feel like I'm not the only one who doesn't want to be there.
toney wasn't much of a lecturer, but his exams are fair and multiple choice. just get a good tutor, and self study as much as possible. if you get chen xi (who makes u memorize every detail!!!!!) you will learn to appreciate toney for his straightforwardness.
Toney is a good teacher, Reading the book and doing the problems was helpful as well as using old tests for practice. Test format is exactly like practice, make use of his discussion section. He wants students to understand and apply the material instead of just memorize which is why he has a bad rap b'c he actually makes students think :0 Do HW
This professor should not be allowed to teach. He isnt clear at all and he doesn't explain what he teaches. I went to all my classes, im a good student, but still got a B. I learned everything from the discussion sections. ITests were exactly like study guides. If you can, take chem 8A with another teacher who actually knows what hes teaching.
haha..this guy would show up to lecture 5 minutes late with his motorcycle helmet and black leather jacket..just about every other lecture. funny man to watch but in a good way. he's not that interesting in lecture but not unclear. exams are very fair; take him if you're looking for a semi-easy class.
lecture time is better spent doing something else. his lectures run off topic and his lecture seems unprepared where he just wings it. he doesn't seem to care for the student's knowledge of material. if you can learn on your own then u got a good chance.

Prepare to teach yourself Biochemistry! Wish I had gone with Hilt or taken another quarter with different professor. Toney is very disorganized and unclear in expectations. His class is frustrating! Especially don't take if you need BIS 103, because you'll be unprepared to draw on any biochemistry after this course.
Probably the worst teacher ever. Can't even tell what's going on at all.
UGH! This guy is so disorganized! He just posted the practice final on monday of finals week! Totally missed out on weekend studying because this guy can't seem to get his act together! You'll basically use the book and TA to teach you the subject.
Cool man outside of class. Terrible teacher... take it from someone else please. So disorganized and really a mess.
didnt go much to lectures, pretty much useless. very hard class, exams not as hard..u have to study the material three times before going to midterms/final, cuz u will be very confused during the exam. again, if ur smart, then there's no need to go to lectures, book is more than enough
compare to Dr. Mascal, he is much easier! All you need to do is memorizing all the chapter summary of the book and finish his recommand problems, then YOU ARE SET!
I really liked him. He reminds me so much of Bill Clinton, so that was entertaining enough for the first couple lectures. If something isn't clear, just ask him after class he's great one-on-one. He explains things so you understand them instead of just making you memorize. Also, he posted all the practice exams early so you could study in advance
He is a really funny man! Bill Clinton!!! you should thank god if you have him!
Practice tests are really helpful. Without them I think most people would've died. His lectures were pretty boring but he tries hard to make you understand instead of just memorize things. Lectures are pretty helpful if you can stay awake.
Once I got over the fact he looks and sounds like Bill Clinton (which made me think he was pretty funny at first), I realized what a terrible lecturer he is. He has a terrible attitude, shows up late for class ALL the time, gets frustrated with students questions, goes off topic to waste class time, and doesn't give answers to practice tests.
Tests are not too hard, but really different from the practice tests. Went too fast on lecture. Some stuffs that he showed us are different from the book, so sometime, I don't know whether to follow the book or him. He is very confusing and he's one of those teachers who speeds up at the end of the quarter when he ran out of time
He's a smart nice guy but can't teach. You have to learn 100% from the book because he just copies mechanisms on the board with no explanation. He constantly comes in late which makes him rush through lecture. Practice tests were not like real test. Midterms arent that hard but final is long and detailed. worth it to take harder teacher
Horrible teacher! His lectures are useless, he's always late, doesn't explain everything throughly, wastes time by going off topic, practice tests weren't that helpful...just bad.
He is a nice guy, but a horrible teacher. Didn't explain any of the concepts thoroughly, all he did was copied down things on the board with barely any logic given. He was very confusing, first day tells us that we should focus more on his lectures rather than the book, and shockingly on the very last day tells that we should read everything.
TERRIBLE. Lectures are disorganized and all over the place. Final really is LONG and HARD. Practice midterms useless, as they are all multiple choice, but the real midterms are not. No answers are given for practice midterms.
He is really nice guy and good teacher.I didn't memorize any of the mechanisms, I just understood them b/c he is explaining the main points which are really helpful in understanding org.chem. Exams are straight forward, no tricks and very easy A.
By far the worst professor I've had at Davis. Toney displays no enthusiasm whatsoever for the subject, his lectures are completely useless, and his midterms are very random. They are not difficult per se, but VERY hard to study for (he doesn't even put answers to his practice tests). Final was horrible.
This guy was late to class 90% of the time by at least 10 minutes. His speech is a little too relaxed for a big lecture to understand him clearly. He answers questions in a patronizing fashion sometimes. Exams are pretty easy, reflective of the later practice tests (excluding the first), all without answer keys, unfortunately. I'd avoid him.
Throughout the quarter, I was questioning whether or not Nasiri was a better choice; now you gotta know how bad it was if you EVER considered Nasiri as an alternative. MTs weren't bad, but the final was a low blow. He's made me considered changing my major. I'm really offended that THIS is where my tuition money is going.
haha, i dont know what everyone is talking about, he was hella funny, easy to understand, and the final wasnt that bad. i got an A+ he made ochem sem like a piece of cake
TERRIBLE. Condescending and rude. You can't even study for his tests because, half of the time, he puts ranking problems (which you either happen to know, or you don't). He teaches from powerpoints (even though he admitted that people had complained about it last quarter). If I didn't hate O-Chem before, I most certainly do now.
HORRIBLE PROF! I have never attended a class in which I have to self-learn the material by myself. He would refuse to help students, give you the wrong info in class (ex. 1/2 of the final is on one section, but not), give useless practice exams, be 5-10 mins late to class, rush through hard material. Curve almost non-existent! AVOID AT ALL CAUSE!
I got an A+ from his class but this is my conclusion: If you get Nasari you get good lectures and bad exam. If you get Toney you get bad lectures and bad exams. You can learn nothing from his class and his pratice test is useless as he does not give you the answers. God Bless you if you get him as an O chem teacher.
I am personally ashamed to attend a university that finds it acceptable to employ such terrible "teachers" such as Toney.
He is not a bad prof at all. He is pretty funny in class and a laid back lecturer. Exams are relatively easy as far as o-chem goes. I definitely learned a lot in this class.
This man is the worst professor I have ever had. He doesn't care whether or not the students learn, has mocked them openly during class, shows up late, refuses to explain, mutters through the whole lecture, and writes very hard midterms while refusing to even share what will be on them. If you have any choice at all, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Practice tests don't resemble final. Refuses to give out answers to the practice tests because "its for your own good." Office hours will make you more confused. I got an A in class but a very hard one. Marked off points when I wrote on the test EXACTLY what he wrote, then he says follow the book, its in your books, look in the book, the book!
he was the best profesor at davis so far, i got an A+, easy as hell, hes hella funny, and sounds like bill clinton, take him, everyone else is trippin about him being bad
Not bad. Looks like Newt Gingrich and sounds like Bill Clinton. Very challenging course, but he obviously had his material well-organized.
Ive had this professor for both 118b and 102 and i always seem to get a B no matter how hard i study or how little i study. His practice tests dont really resemble his exams for 118b but for 102 they are very similar. I had to read the book a lot though to comprehend a lot of te material. Overall hes not too bad.
Not too bad. Go to class and take good notes so you can understand what you wrote down when going back to review. The class consisted of two midterms and the final. Understand the material in class and how to do practice exams and you should be golden.
Go to office hours, read the book, and do the practice exam and you'll surely get an A!
This professor taught with extreme clarity, and the exams were fair. The only thing about him is he care too much about his research, sometimes he does not show up
Pretty clear in his lectures and was open to answering any questions about organic chemistry, even if not necessary for class. Seemed like he wanted us to learn and get interested in Chemistry. Tests were pretty fair. Would definitely take him again.
It's helpful to do the reading BEFORE you get to class. He's extremely clear about what he wants you to know, and I love the bantering teaching style. He also sounds like Bill Clinton, which is pretty nice to listen to.
Ochem is a hard class. Do yourself a favor and take this teacher. Personable, helpful, and very generous with grading
Incredibly clear lecturer, and due to the small class size of the CHE 128 series it was easy to ask questions. Tests lacked very challenging conceptual questions so they had high averages and thus there was little curve.
His CHE 8A class was definitely sloppy, but GENEROUSLY curved. The tests were majority mult. choice, weird for an ochem class, and hardly any free-response. I studied by doing the questions he assigns as practice and going to small group tutoring over at Dutton Hall and got an A+ in the class. Attend lecture, go to tutoring, and practice.
Knew he was great at the time but after taking Mascals 128B, Toney's greatness skyrocketed.Highly recommend. Very fair. Stimulates your ability to think as a chemist as opposed to memorization. Occasionally calls on people to answer questions, but does so out of good fun. Compassionate for students and what they have to go through. Bill Clinton.
If you actually want to understand OChem take it with Toney! He will give you a very good basis for the rest of your OChem career. If you are taking him for 128A, PARTICIPATE IN CLASS - that's how I got an A. And for those of you who are taking 118A (and aren't attending your lecs), feel free to sit in - it's been helpful for some of my friends.
We had 2 midterms, no study guide, no review session, and no practice tests. Also, he personally said that he designed the midterms with a level of difficulty that the class mean is around 50. I wouldn't take his class.
cold calls on people in lecture. doesn't know how to teach a lower div course. literally less than half the class shows up to his lectures and he refuses to acknowledge that he is any part of the problem, instead condescendingly lectured us for half an hour about how to grade on a curve.
Probably one of the worst professors I've had. Might as well take 118B instead. Test averages were low, because they were very difficult. Doesn't use his own slides. Calls on people at random. Very condescending. Should not be teaching a lower division OChem course, period. Only plus is the generous curve. I would not take him.
New to teaching CHE8B. Spends most of lecture stressing how he will prepare us, without actually preparing us. Mumbles a lot. Likes to call on students. Somewhat antagonizing, and comments on his colleagues. Goes off on a tangent for half the period. Unorganized lectures, slides. Tests are really challenging, & expect a lot of self-teaching.
If you go to lecture, be prepared to waste time on your phone because literally nothing he says is of importance anyways. Very tough exams, got a C on the first and less than F on the second. This is his first time teaching this course and it showed. No practice exams, HW questions can be found online, and very little help. Avoid at all costs.
Not the best teacher, but I definitely think that people people complain too much. Midterm 2 was much harder than Midterm 1, but I got so tired of people complaining that he didn't teach us some of the material when he went over the actual reactions in class! Maybe if people went to class they would have scored higher! He's better than nothing
Prof. Tony is new to teaching this class, but problems lie mostly with his refusal to accept his inability to each a lower division class effectively. Students that take this class are mostly 2nd to 3rd year leveled, yet his resolution to dropping class averages was a document named "I studied SO much for this organic chemistry exam".
Prof. Toney's class wasn't the worst thing in the world like everyone makes it out to be. I probably went to 3-4 lectures the entire quarter and managed to perform significantly better than the class. His tests aren't impossible. Just read the book and you'll be fine.
Prof. Toney was extremely unprofessional and sent out extremely rude and sarcastic emails claiming that it was the fault of the students and their study habits when the majority (around 80-90%) of the class failed the tests. Didn't follow his own grading scale, made rude remarks in class, and was not helpful when students asked him questions.
Toney was pretty condescending and rude to us. He'd ask the class questions and when no one answered, he got mad and started saying how we were incompetent. He would always say that he wouldn't test on every little detail of every lecture slide, but that was such a lie. His test questions are so specific and obscure. Avoid Toney.
Toney sure loves to torture his students. He kept adjusting our grade scale and gave everyone false hope that grades could go up. TONEY IS NOT ONLY A HORRIBLE PROFESSOR, BUT ALSO A HORRIBLE PERSON. Good luck to you if you end up with this joke of a professor.
Sure, the tests were rough, but they're not the issue. Toney talks down to his students, makes us feel stupid for not understanding things, and puts in no effort above the minimum to help. He actually said he wasn't going to have any practice tests because they "take too long to make." I've never cried over a class like I did this one.
After taking Toney's class, I literally learned nothing about organic chemistry. I could not rely on his lectures (he put in minimal effort to teach and would sit while yelling at us), so I studied the book like crazy. Sadly, this was not enough to get a C in his class. I retook it with Dr. Franz, and I learned SO MUCH MORE, it's not even funny.
Toney puts no effort into lectures. Does the bare minimum by pointing at PowerPoint slides and talking as quickly as he can. Relies on students constantly asking questions to compensate for his lack of preparation. Provides no practice material except several very short HW assignments. Tests are fair, but a lot of self study is required to do well.
Toney overall wasnt too bad. At the beginning, lectures are good but then he goes way too fast towards the end especially with mechanisms which is the central core topic of Ochem. Tests are fair and curve is pretty good. My 64% was a C. Took him for fall quarter 2017.
Toney is a very unique professor. He comes off as somewhat gruff but he's actually very nice and often very comedic in his lectures. His homework and tests are definitely difficult, but still doable, and the homework really prepares you for the midterms. Finally, I recommend getting the textbook. I didn't have it and I feel like it set me back.
His lectures are unorganized and he harassed a fellow student for asking for more practice problems. By harassed, I mean he stalked her social media and contacted her work. He does not believe in practice problems. He showed up to class 5 minutes late each class which totals 135 minutes. He does not answer questions in class nor in office hours.
Avoid this professor at all costs, he teaches solely off powerpoints and yet even those are riddled with typos. He constantly shows up to class late and cold calls students for questions that he never explained how to do, then when they get it wrong he makes a buzzer noise and tells them to pay more attention. Terrible professor as well as person.
I implore you to avoid this professor if you can. He clearly does not take teaching seriously and mostly paraphrases off his slides-- a very ineffective teaching style. Always shows up late to class. The two things that saved me were the textbook and his office hours. His exam difficulties varied from easy to hard, so always stay on top of things.
Highly recommend both attending lectures and reading the textbook. He goes in depth and really wants to make sure you know the material at a higher level, and is a great lecturer in general. If you keep up with the textbook, and attend lecture you should be in the B or A range.(also this seems more fun and informative than the 118 series)
Lectures are a repeat of notes from the textbook but with no application whatsoever. The first homework set is pretty terrible as some of the questions are from chapters we haven't even gone over and the expectation to solve them with minimal help is abysmal. Not looking forward to the taking exams in a course that sets us up for failure. Good luck
I did well in this class, but I did not think Dr. Toney did a great job of explaining the material in a straightforward manner. A lot of his explanations were convoluted, and often assumed we knew the background to what he was talking about. He also showed up to class late many times. But his exams weren't too bad and he was nice overall.
I took Professor Toney after taking Professor Mascal. Professor toney is sooo much better. If you have the option you should take him. Hes accessible during office hours and his lectures make sense. If you look over class example and do his homework you should be set. His practice exams are similar to the actual exam.
Exams are difficult with very limited amount of time provided, given during the difficulties during the pandemic. Assumes and forces all students to "deal with any internet issues", have no sympathy for students with difficulties. To be honest, the list can go on, but man... worst way to learn pchem and no ty to michael toney
He is super paranoid with unreasonably LONG open book exams, time-restricted exams to 50min + 15min to upload, 1 min late 1% deduction policy. Received 3% total grade deduction due to uploading because of slightly delayed with no compensation. This professor's policy gave me anxiety, unnecessary stress in the pandemic for education.
With the current situation going on I would have thought that our professor would be understanding. This isnt the case Dr. Toney. If you have the opportunity to take this class with someone else... please do.
I dont know what kind of magic that made him become a professor because he shouldnt be. The grading scale is crazy. The class average would be a C+ no matter what normal grading policy is. Dont take him if you have chance
Lacks the ability to empathize with students. I took his class during COVID-19 and he asked us to go to the grocery store or Starbucks to access wifi if we wanted to take his exams he refused to reschedule when the city was experiencing internet issues. (I am immunocompromised and this is dangerous for me). Avoid this instructor at all costs.
Toney seemed to not be able to adjust to online teaching, but made his students pay for it. Lectures were unhelpful and horribly boring. Told students to go to starbucks or safeway for wifi during the pandemic. Used a gaussian curve, making it impossible to get an A. Has no understanding for his students, but can take a day off for not feeling well
Non-responsive and is not willing to accommodate for students. Many students expressed that they did not have a printer to access during COVID as campus was closed and he basically stated that printers are $60 which is relatively cheap now a days. Many students and their family lost jobs during COVID but that didn't seem to bother Toney.
Not necessarily the hardest course I've taken, but he just makes it especially hard during these trying times of global pandemic. If this class was held normally on campus, I would just suck it up and would not complain. There are many challenges that students have to face. He has zero compassion and makes no efforts to help students.
Material was not extremely difficult. Solutions manual and textbook will be your teacher. Try TA office hours instead of this professor...
Avoid him if you can . Show no sympathy for students' situation
Don't take him if possible. Exams are hard and don't give any practice papers or helpful in any ways.
Student can't print his answer sheet? Go buy a printer. Student has connectivity issues? Ask a neighbor or go to Safeway for wifi. Student asks about the final grading logistics? He's causing mass hysteria and spreading false information, report to SJA! Best way to grade students? Gaussian curve where your grade depends on everyone else.
It is obvious that Prof. Toney is only at UCD to research, he just does not care about teaching and it is obvious in his boring lectures. Exams were relatively simple and the final had repeat info from exams. Enzyme kinetics lectures were good, quantum mechanics lectures were horrible. He grades based on a Gaussian curve (info not in syllabus).
Online quarter was hard on everyone. Dr. Toney was very helpful in office hours, being approachable and clearly cared that his students learned the material. Unbalanced emphasis on certain concepts but fortunately they were the interesting ones. Read the book, understand all lecture notes, do the chapter practice and you'll be in the A/B range.
Those good reviews were for in-person times and more than 2 yrs ago, and it is clear he had 0% preparation for an online format. I must be honest and say at least he is a nice person and shows the will to help during OH, but he is srsly the worst teacher I have taken here in Davis. Even for Ochem it was too much. At least avoid him for online.
He wasn't that bad imo, his lectures were just boring (for online). He was really nice during Office Hours, and would explain things in depth. I feel like he skimmed over some important topics sometimes, but follow the book and you'll be fine. His tests were way too long to finish, but he made up for it with the curve. Overall, an ok ochem prof.
boring and confusing to follow. Just read the book and do the problems to see your understanding. Use the professor for office hours to clarify points that don't make sense to you. Overall he's not reliable to gain a full understanding of what's going on, which is what you're being tested on. Much of it is self learning so Lecture is wasted time
He is just lazy and not excited to teach. Uses old recordings that have sound issues, you can barely hear him. Extremely rude if he ever replies to your emails. Test and quizzes have nothing to do with most of what he showed in the lecture. The bad curve that we can't even see during the quarter. No one was able to finish his exams.
Prof. Toney's lectures are quite boring but informative. He reused his recorded lectures from last year, and they have constant sound glitches (very bad). Grade is composed of 8 quizzes and 3 exams. The exams are too hard for the time given, but most exam material comes straight from lecture/textbook. Definitely get the textbook for this course.
Prof Toney is one of the hardest professors. He doesn't give you enough time to do exams and exams are really hard. Please don't take chem 107B with him. He doesn't care about his students.
If u study the lectures notes and stay on top of it u will be fine. Anyways, he basically let all those who had like a 57% or low 60 pass with a C- which is pretty generous. Review ur notes everyday and u can do the book problem he assigns if u want. Good lecturer but sometimes I didn't understand the concept since it was hard so go to OFFICE HRS!
Generous curve, and material tested is quite fair based on lectures and assigned problems. Lectures up to MT2 is pretty good, but after that the lectures and material weren't as well taught. Free response on exams can feel short on time, but questions asked are typically fair. He's not the most enthusiastic but teaches concepts well.
