A very dedicated and energetic instructor dedicated to sharing understanding about complex mathematical concepts with his students. An excellent teacher.
Unclear about what he wants out of his students, and has a tendency to make his students feel dumb when his expectations aren't met.
has more energy than some 5 year olds. some of the projects were kinda dumb, but otherwise a kickass teacher
He is a cool professor, occassionally. It is true, he does have high expectations of his students, which pose problems when it comes to taking his tests.
This professor is awesome! His tests and homework were easy to understand and very clear. He really helped me understand math much better! Highly recommended!!
This guy is a great teacher. He always says "You're an Idiot" just for fun. He's very easy to understand and if you do the homework problems, then the exam shouldn't be difficult. The final exam is just problems taken from the previous exams.
He is very thorough in his explanations and makes the material easier to understand. If you do the homework, the tests should be no problem for you. He's funny and fun to be around. Mr. Tran loves what he does and you can see that when he teaches.
Makes calculus less painful with his energy in the classroom.
He is a great teacher! His lectures are very thorough and well-planned. His expectations are reasonable and he makes the class enjoyable. I learned a lot and I am glad I had him as a teacher. He is also very understanding and funny!
Mr. Tran expects a lot from his students, no doubt about it, but he is a great teacher and I have learned a lot from him. He is very thorough in his lectures, and a funny guy. I have taken him for two classes and plan on taking him again next semester. He's definitely the best math teacher I've had
Good teacher, assigns a lot of hw and checks if you done it all. Teaches well and easy to understand.
I have taken this professor during the Summer session. He was a very nice guy, very entertaining. He makes the subject fun and understandable. I will be taking his Trig. class for the spring semester, and expect to have and enjoyable experience. Great teacher, best math teacher thus far.
Talks fast, thinks fast, goes fast. Take good notes and your golden.
I thought Mr. Tran was a horrible teacher. He assumes everyone knows math and just goes off into space while your sitting there wondering what the hec happend. His tests are far from what he taught, assuming he taught you how to do those problems. If math is not your best subject do not take him.
I did not like him at ALL !! I am very good at math and took this to help prepare myself for college and refresh from high school. I noticed he really didn't stay on track to what he was teaching and was mean towards student. He seemed to think everyone knew what he was teaching but i helped about h
Oh my god, this guy made calculus bearable! He is the only reason I was able to do well in Calc 2. Enjoyed his energy, and will always remember how to take the derivative of a fraction: if you took him you should remember the song...Would recomend him to any one!
A very eccentric teacher; he is always active and keeps you awakw with his energy. He expects alot from his students with the homework he assigns, projects he assigns, and the quizzes and exams are fair from how he teaches. Very organized and makes Math a fun and enjoyable class.
Outstanding Teacher!!! He really makes sure you know your stuff. I.E. Quizes, group projects... I have taken trig, Calc I, Calc II, Calc III(currently taking). This class is not for those students that want to get an "easy" A. Prepares you for the real world....
His English is terrible. He is hard to follow and inconsistent.
He hardly can speak english, and he goes so fast skribbling on the board, i cant keep up with what hes trying to say, he will say, "Does the class understand?" and the front row who must have been 3 time failures, said yes because they already mastered this portion, and he would assume the whole class knew it. Trig is easy to learn, not with him.
The class is not good at all. He doesn't know this type of math and his english is so bad it's impossible to like it.
I took his summer class & he is an amazing teacher! He really prepared me for Calc II. He is encouraging, honest & knowledgeable. He gives helpful study guides for tests, ex. cred, hw, group projects, study sheets and his tests are fair. He also allows you to have a notecard to use on tests. Take his class! His accent isnt bad at all.
Mr. Tran has to be the most lively math teacher on campus. He's a funny guy, he likes to dance, and he knows what he is doing. The Downside is the massive homework load. I think it's a fair trade for the quality, but that's just me.

Makes math interesting, he is an extremely entertaining and wonderful teacher. Assigns a lot of homework, but the practice doesn't hurt for the advanced math classes. Tests are kinda hard but he let's you drop the lowest test score at the end of the semester and he makes the final easy so you can catch up. As long as you study you will love his classes.
I think he really likes math :)
Best math teacher I ever had. Tran really brings calculus down to earth. He has a very unique style. Advice: before taking this class, KNOW your trig and algebra. He doesn't spend time teaching the class stuff they should already know, but concentrates on getting the class to understand the concepts of calculus. I just wish he would teach calc III
This class is pretty boring if you don't like math like me, but it is fairly easy. He goes over everything and is very clear. He really is a good teacher. You can use a note card on the tests.
I couldn't understand his english

One of the best teachers I have ever had for math. Very funny and nice. Just don't ask a stupid question like: "why are we doing this?" Anyways, his tests are hard but if you study hard then you will do fine. The primary reason his tests are hard is you have one hour and fifteen minutes, then it is over. But, he is definately leaniate. Take him.
understandable accent, expect labs, homework, and tests to be a lot of hard work, not easy math just because it's for teachers. friendly but his philosophy is purposely to confuse you as children will feel confused when first learning. Tests are hard and have a time limit so expect to work frantically with your group to finish in time.
mr. tran's classes are problem free. he'll gladly provide a proof for most equations and will clarify as much as possible in class but always offers to help during office hours if time is short. he doesn't go overboard with homework, and tests are managable. he's a lenient grader. he's a funny guy and class is anxiety-free.
HE IS HARD TO UNDERSTAND, HE DOESN'T EXPLAIN THINGS CLEARLY, HE HAS UNREASONABLE EXPECTATIONS-DON'T TAKE HIM.
great teacher, has thick accent, but you can usually get what he says and he'll gladly repeat himself if you need him to. my class was half online, i ended up getting an A and ranking first in the class because of the online practice test! it was so incredably easy!
So I took both of his algebra I & II class that he offered. The first one was using a program online. I barely understood that. But the second time I took him I learned so much more. He really works hard to make you understan things so well. Seriously I wish I had taken more of his classes esp. stats if he would have taught that. He's also veryfunn
He is rude, insulting and condecending. You need the book, he'll make sure of it. there is a lot of hard HW and lots of lab work with groups you cannot rely on. the tests take 3 hours, and are hard! he does not offer help outside of class. he treats you like you are back in High School. the course is confusing already, and he makes it more so!
Loved this teacher. He's fun and explains things really well. He moves quickly, but if you do your homework early or read the section before he does it, the class is really easy.
Online class - first meeting/final on campus. I've withdrawn from the class because no additional help was available from the instructor. Communications are unclear and when I asked for help, he simply sent me back the answer rather than explaining the process.
I had his online class. As with ANY online class, you are pretty much on your own as far as understanding the work and getting it done goes. But Tran does make himself avaiable for help if you need it and is sympathetic to personal issues. He obviously loves math and he sincerely wants you to understand it and do well. he's funny and enthusiastic.
Took the online class and if you work well on your own this class is for you. You can play back the lessons as often as you need them and skip lessons if you know the material. The online tools are helpful for homework and quizzes and the tests weren't a problem. Prof. Tran was helpful and I would take his class again any day.
HE IS A VERY GOOD TEACHER, SOMETIMES HARD TO UNDERSTAND AND THINKS HE IS FUNNY. WELL SOMETIMES HE IS. TALKS ABOUT "SEEING THE COW" MEANING IF U UNDERSTAND. ALOT OF HOMEWORK BUT MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR GRADE. GIVES PRACTICE TEST BEFORE TEST ALWAYS. U CAN DO WELL ON TEST AND QUIZ AND STILL MAKE A "D" OR "C" BCUZ OF HW. SO JUS DO IT N U'LL B HAPPI!
Very easy to understand
Great guy, very clear and more helpful that I ever expected. This is the class to take if you want a teacher to put the amount of effort into teaching that YOU put into learning!
Heard so many great things about this guy and have been SORELY DISAPPOINTED. He flies through material, makes fun of you all semester if you aren't understanding things immediately. Very rude and condescending. Can't make up his mind on how to approach things. Probably the worst math teacher I've had here, and I've had 8 math classes and 6 teachers, and most of them have been terrific! Ok, I did get a B, an 89% even, but I was frustrated the whole semester. Maybe he was just having a bad semester, I don't know. . .

He is hilarious! His accent is hard to understand at first but after the first two weeks it is fine. Cracked jokes all the time. He flies through material and goes fast, but he will always help when needed. He adds 2% onto your grade if you have perfect attendence. I would definitely reccomned him!
If you are slow to understanding Math Tran is not the teacher to take. For the "slow to get it" students he will not spend the time explaining so you understand. Condescending alot. And voices that he would like the slower ones to drop from the class.
He is a really good teahcer. You have to attend his class in order to understand the material. He always answers the questions that you have and he is dependable when it comes to actually having a class. And his accent is hard to understand at first, but he always cracks cheesy jokes. I totally recommend him.
ok so i've had mr tran since my math 150 semester and he is honestly the best math teacher i have ever had. He is fair and teaches in a great way. Also he makes you laugh which is always a plus when your learning calculus
best math teacher ever! the hw load he gives you is worth it because i learned a great deal more from doing it on my own (not to mention he actually gives you a grade for it). i definitely recommend him, esp. for math majors. and did i mention he's funny as hell?
I love him! He is funny! I look forward to his class every single time. He is wonderful. Very funny, especially when he asks the class in his thick accent if we are "confused".. I will definately take him again. It's good to have fun in math and he definately makes that possible.
Mr. Tran is the most amazing math teacher I've ever had. I took every calculus class with him and also trig. I am a math major and ecause of his teachings I'm doing great now in my senior year.He really puts a lot of effort for students to comprehend the material, teachers I have now, just lecture and is up to you if you get it. Loved him!!
He's a great teacher. There is a lot of work but it helps to understand it. He makes help available by him or saying that there are tutors available and tries to make sure everybody gets the material in class.
Serious at teaching, yet has some fun on the way. He's intent on teaching you more ways than one on how to solve things as to help you find the strategy most helpful to you. We never used the book in class, but all of our homework was assigned from it. Oh, and get ready for hand outs galore! Great teacher. Highly recomended.
Tran shows alternative ways of solving every problem
Smartest man/DR. I have ever met!! He is a genius and he make class fun!!
HE IS A GOOD GUY. IF YOU HAVE PROBLEM,HE WILL HELP YOU.HE'S EXAMS ARE FAIR.IF YOU LISTEN WELL TO HIM,AND DO YOUR HOME WORK,SP,REVIEW CHAPTER,YOU CAN GOT A LIKE ME. ROCK ON MR.TRAN ARE YOU READYYY?
He's a cool guy, he tells some dumb jokes, and stupid stories, but it makes the class easier to take. Class is graded on a normal scale, but you get +2% for perfect attendance, which is what pushed me over the top to get an A. His accent wasn't a problem. Sometimes he brings snacks to class, so don't take him if you're on a diet. TRAN U SO CRAZY!!!
He is nice, approachable, works at keeping the lecture engaging and is pretty good at it, but he expects too much from students. I never had more difficult tests in the four calc classes I took. He actually told us we were all going to fail the midterm. Everybody did.
Tran is a great teacher! He teaches you different ways to comprehend math, based on visual or listener learner. Tran explains everything in detail and makes sure you understand the concept. He's a very understanding guy also. I recommend him to anyone. I will be taking him again for math 70 and 102!!!!
i took his online course, so i dont really know his teaching style. he did send out lots of information via email and sent us practice tests a few days befor we had to take them. the tests were taken in class and he seems really nice, but hard to understand and told a lot of stupid jokes. i dont think i will take him for a normal class, but easy A.
I Love Mr.Tran...I had major anxiety about math prior to taking the class...but he has unique methods of making students comprehend math..Now I understand math and believe it or not, I actually enjoy math...Mr.Tran makes you wanna come to class and stay in class the whole time...I love his jokes. He is the best teacher hands down..I m gonna miss em
Tran is AMAZING! Although he gives A LOT of homework, it helps in the long run. He makes math fun and simple to understand. He cracks some silly jokes, but hey at least he isn't a dry lecture kind of guy. See you next semester crazy Tran! :]
Great sense of humor and very willing to help. Shows different way to solve problems.
amazing teacher! when I first took the class I was completely lost but the homework and study guides really help and I ended up getting a B in the class. I will for sure take him again!
He is SO funny and really cool. Take him and you will end up with a lot of knowledge. Had taken class before but did not understand it, he explains EVERYTHING very well!
He is the worst teacher I've ever had. Writes notes for two hours and doesn't explain things at all. Explains for himself not for the class you can't get a topic in 5 seconds.
This teacher is the worst if you care about your GPA don't take him test are different than lecture.
Tran is funny. Tough, but he has a sense of humor. You HAVE to study!!
Wasn't a good teacher for me. I need one who is more helpful and explains math concepts better. Seemed too shy to even be a teacher. Kind of awkward. I'm sure he's a good teacher for some, though.
i found professor tran to be a perfectly adequate teacher. he is a lenient grader, and will slow down and explain things again if (but only if) you ask. if you do all the homework and study for the tests, you'll do fine in his class.
He's the most entertaining math teacher I've ever had, I'll give him that. You won't be bored. His humor style is passive aggressive which I'm a big fan of. He's very sarcastic towards the people who don't try/don't belong there which I like quite a bit. For the most part, he's a solid teacher but he screws up sometimes on big concepts.
Really cool, fun teacher to have. He explains the material really well and will spend as much time as you need until you understand it.Frequently brings candy to class if you get an A on a test. You MUST got to his class though, he WILL drop you if you miss more than 2!!!
I took him for all three cal's and i can honesty say he does not know how to teach, I learned all the material from youtube lectures! He never explains what he is doing or why he is doing it. He bails all his students by making the h w worth almost as much as his test. oh and he picked on me ALL THE TIME (i also had the highest grade in the class)
I have always been really good at math, but this professor cannot teach! He gave us problems he couldn't even solve and when we asked questions, his response was "just because". Homework grade is what allowed me to pass his class. Group projects are also a major part of your grade. Will help you in his office hours but not after class.
I have always been really good at math, but this professor cannot teach! He gave us problems he couldn't even solve and when we asked questions, his response was "just because". Homework grade is what allowed me to pass his class. Group projects are also a major part of your grade. Will help you in his office hours but not after class.
I took Math 102 on Spring 2010. I worked hard and did study groups. We had group quizes and make sure to keep up on HW. I recieved a B but the study groups really helped. Just make sure to study and keep up on all the work.
Mr. Tran did not resond to eamils in a timely fashion. He made fun of you before tests. Tests were not consistant with online HW assignments or reviews before tests. He says you have to come to all classes for the tests (online class) , but on the final he allows make-ups.He told a girl :you can take the class again if you fail" before the final
Great teacher, You have to do good in all his test so you can pass the class becuase the final is worth 30% of your grade. I got a D so i have to retake it :/
Teaches like it's an upper division class. Doesn't answer questions in class, but homework is 100 points if you complete it. Can lose control of the class easily. Likes to ask you if you want to drop, or tell you that you can take the class next year...annoying.
I would not recommend taking any classes taught by Tran. He is inconsistent, difficult to understand, and unavailable when students need him. I have horrible anxiety when it comes to math, and he only made me feel worse about my abilities.
Like this class, this is an action packed class and Tran does present it well. It is not an easy class and I don't think he dumbs it down at all, he will do proofs that go 360 degrees around the room at a rapid pace, fun and challenging keeping up. I don't think he lowers the level to meet the students ability which I appreciate, transfering UC.
Funny professor. He doesn't look to trick you on exams. Quizzes are done in groups, HW if complete are free points. Class can move fast from time to time. Use his office hours for help. Just keep up with the HW and STUDYING. Do lots of problems, only way you'll get good at math.
An interesting teacher with a sense of humor; granted a strange sense of humor but still rather funny. He will go back and explain things again although he tends to get annoyed if you don't get after the first few times. Usually he explains things several different ways when he first teaches the new whatever. Focus and keep up with homework!! :)
Very nice guy, but he would say this is this and then he would change his mind and correct himself. Then he'd go back and say the first thing was correct. This happened a few times. It was very confusing. Very nice, but not my preferred teaching style I guess.
Nice guy but confusing... Will give practice midterms and practice finals and tell you that they will completely prepare you for the tests. They wont. Because the subject matter on the actual tests is completely different than the practice tests. He also incorporates algebra 2. Which is a different class altogether. Skip him.
He really likes teaching but never gets back with emails and is not friendly with helping people. He can also be very hard to understand at times. Stay away if you can.
Has habit of tricking students on exams and in class. Study guids give impression of complete understanding of the material, but test has completely different concepts or is significantly more complex. Does not understand questions or comments from students and instead of seeking clarification, ignores the student and laughs. Not professional.
hard to understand him at times., talks to us like we are stupid
funny guy. very random. extra credit helps a lot. study and always do hw. I didnt do as well as I wanted to cos of other classes. but overall a good professor!
He was funny, Helpful, and understood my learning disability (dyslexia). Would definitely take him again for higher maths.
Test are advance Calculus problems which homework and lectures is partially relevant. Quizzes are for easy base on similar problems from Homework. If you plan to score A or B on test be sure you find advanced dozens of Calculus problems online or from another book to prepared you to succeed the test.
PLEASE do NOT take this teacher! He is the absolute worst teacher I have ever had. He lies about when quizzes are&is mean to his students. I took this class in high school & understood it but he is so confusing that I actually had to re-teach myself. Luckily I had a friend that helped me. He also makes many mistakes on study guides. Just... don't.
Tran allows the use of graphing calculators and a small notecard for the tests. Every other test is a take-home test. There are group assignments worth 10% of the grade. Each student in a group receives the same grade as the student who receives the lowest score. You receive 2% extra credit for perfect attendance.
Good teacher who wants his students to succeed but can be very confusing. He'll explain things two or three times before the class finally understands. He loses control of the class easily and frequently. Still tries his best to help and keep the class interested.
Misogynistic comments, frequent cursing, poor grammar, confusing lectures, homework unrelated to lectures, and general incompetence are just some of the many delightful things you can expect from this teacher! This class has reduced me to tears at least 4 times so far this semester. Save yourself, pick a different teacher.
He was a horrible professor!!!!! I can't understand him, he confuses me when he lectures, tests are not based on lectures! Just don't take him I used to love math but he made me hate it do glad I'm done with him!!!!!
Funny guy. Makes class feel less tense/serious than it should be. He teaches in a way that helps you to better understand the practical uses of calculus. Very light/medium workload. +2% to your final grade for perfect attendance.
I got to skip calc I but long story short i ended up having to take this class after it finished everything else. Hes a good teacher, calculus is just tough. Hes helpful, friendly, speaks clearly enough (a gem). Hes also pretty lenient compared to most math teachers (cough anderson). If you want to learn ask questions, he will help.
Test are hard, does quiz's on Friday's no help on that.
He's an outstanding professor. All of these negative posts are probably from students who have no idea what a real college class is like. Read the section ahead of time. Work out examples before class. Do your assigned homework before the next lecture. Show up on time. Don't miss class. Mr Tran is one of the best math proffessors I've ever had.
Not professional and does not have good teaching skills. Tries to be funny but he's just boring. Avoid
Stay away by all means necessary. This guy doesn't have your best interest at heart. Teaching style is outdated, ask him a question, he will laugh at you first, then make you look stupid in front of the whole class. Considered yourself warned, avoid by all means necessary.
Many people say he's horrible, but he is easily my favorite professor! Very funny in class, fairly easy to understand.
He Is An Amazing Teacher Honestly All These Negative Rates Are From Lazy Students That Don't Do their Homework I LOVE tran he helps you when you need it test quizzes are REALLY easy Not a tough grader very nice funny and he CARES about his students TAKE him he will help you get extra credit if you have a low grade he doesn't want anybody to fail!!!
He's amazing take him you won't regret he's very nice helpful and he honestly cares about his students who ever rated him giving negative feedback is just salty students that didn't pass the class are the ones that didn't do their homework or study
He's not there to help you. He makes students intimidated to ask questions. I was passing the class and he dropped me at the END of the semester for missing 2 classes. He was really rude about it and embarrassed me in front of the whole class.
Ask ASK ASK if you don't understand and he will get out of his way to help students who truly care to learn. I'm horrible at math but I was able to understand everything he taught. He loves math and he loves students who TRY to learn and do their work.
He makes many mistakes when he teaches. He laughs at students when they don't understand and he is rude. Don't take him.
Started terribly, failed the first exam & thought about dropping.. I put more effort & was rewarded. Finished with over a 95 percent. Tran offered extra credit almost every week. Exams weren't to difficult. You'll be fine if you pay attention, do your HW, and study. Tran will not hold your hand through this course. You earn your grade!
Excellent math teacher! Lectures are clear, and he is always willing to help during office hours. Gives extra credit and prints out all the notes so you can focus 100 percent. Tests were a bit tricky, so make sure you know ur stuff.
Tran is an OKAY professor but he's too much of a downer. He doesn't motivate you to be better but rather makes fun of you and pushes your insecurities. I get he's trying to be funny but if someone tells you you're going to fail on an exam on the day of the exam then it might make some students anxious.
Professor Tran was one of my favorite math instructors. His lectures were clear and encourages the students to help eachother. He is always available during his study sessions and they are extremely helpful. He puts a lot of effort into teaching his class.
He seems ok and I really enjoyed the class at first, but soon he begins to make fun of students instead of encouraging them to succeed. When students ask questions he will usually make fun of them instead of helping and answering their questions. Would not take again; I don't really respect teachers that make fun of their students. Good luck.
I took Mr. Tran for Math 070, worst teacher ever! He has class to review before the test, and nothing that he goes over is on the test. He gives two mid-terms and one final, those are about 80% of your grade. He has mandatory meeting and he likes to fun of students.
I took Prof. Tran for Trig, and it was the best math class I've ever taken. I'm not a huge math lover, I've struggled with other math courses in the past, and I still passed with an A+. As long as you show up, do your homework and all the extra credit that he provides you, you'll do great in this class.
Mr. Tran doesn't care for his students. Likes to make fun of students, and he also gives a lot of homework, and beware of pop quizzes. Nothing that he goes over is on the test, test are hard. If you're not good with math do not take him!
DO NOT TAKE HIM.... He did teach the material well. He gave us a lot of handouts and he gave a lot of extra credit. The test were really hard. If you missed a step the whole question was wrong. I did all the extra credit and i got all 50 or 60s on the test. But at the end the extra credit never helped. I'm having to retake the class.
Take him he is a wonderful teacher. He is quite knowledgeable and loves to ensure his students understand the material in a practical and theoretical matter. He is there to help. He offers a lot of extra credit. I would take him again. If you do the homework, come to class, and the extra credit you should be fine. I would take him again.
I am terrified of math. Funny I am going for engineer. He made Math 230 very easy and it is a difficult class. He truly cares for his students and makes math fun.
A funny guy, but man are the tests hard. I felt the final actually had little to do with what I had learned all semester. That being said, Tran gives review worksheets throughout the semester, and is available if you need help.
Professor Tran is a great math professor he is not rigorous at all and very practical. I would not recommend him if you are going for a math major, however for all other majors he gives very nice shortcuts and teaches only essential information you need to solve the problems. Tests have a rather difficult take home portion, in class portion is easy
TAKE HIM HE IS A GREAT TEACHER AND CARES, he jokes around a lot but that's just him, just pay attention and do your work
He gives out extra work that is sometimes homework and sometimes extra credit, but he doesn't make it clear which it is. He doesn't follow the syllabus. If you ask for help, he doesn't really answer the question? He thinks he's hilarious, but he isn't. The lectures were really fast-paced, and the math textbook was equally long-winded and confusing.
Lots of Homework but will complete half of the homework in class together. Offers lots of extra credit. Test are easy if you do your homework. His humor is very..... I personally laughed everyday, but others dont have the same sense of humor so if you take things too personally dont take him. Example: He will always tell you not to get emotional.
Prof. Tran gives a reasonable amount of homework (helps for students to thoroughly understand the concepts). Any confusions I had was easily dispersed in office hours. Everything tested is base on what he taught. The take-home portion of the exam might be a bit tricky but solvable eventually. He is a cool teacher. Humor is subjective.
For you to get an A, do nearly ALL extra credit (a lot of that), miss NO mandatory assignments, and not only pass, but KILL all the big tests and final. Its not impossible, its actual pretty simple but students have other classes as well to focus on, plus math itself involves mistakes. Tried so hard only to barely miss the A cutoff.
If you want to learn Cowculus, take this class. If you're sensitive, and can't take a joke, livin up. That is what I get from Tran's environment, and that does translate to the real world. If you can't handle a little pressure in the classroom, how are you going to survive real world pressure? I am in his 160 class and I still enjoy it. Cheers.
Tran did not follow the syllabus. Lectures felt rushed and didn't drive home the concept, we were often given busy work for the last 30 min. of class. In one instance he announced a test (albeit a group test) 2 days prior. You will get an A if you turn everything in and do well enough on tests/quizzes, but it doesn't feel like you actually learn.
Statistics is a very difficult subject to teach. So it can be hard to pick a professor. He is funny but not as helpful as you'd wish. Lots of homework, heavy tests, gets off topic, always needs to make jokes, and he will not understand why you don't understand what he is teaching. Study on your own and you can pass!
Mr. Tran is my favorite teacher of all time. He cracks me up and is very caring about his students' learning and understanding. He takes time and money to make special worksheets and assignments to make the subject easier to understand. Math was like a foreign language to me till I met Mr. Tran. He's super dorky and funny which I love!
I have a love/hate thing about Tran. Im very grateful for all of the points accessible in his class via homework assignments, extra credit, and quizzes. He really cares about his work and his students, he puts a lot of thought into his lectures to math to teach in an unorthodox way. But he gets scatterbrain trying to fit so much in lectures,
Honestly this was one of my favorite classes and would totally take him again. If you study his lectures and worksheets he gives out youll be fine for tests/quizzes. Trans methods of explaining are different but trust me itll stick to you. Interactive class at times, working with your peers, great way to ask questions to understand the concepts!!
Never take him if you have the option not to.
By far one of the most amazing professors I have ever taken! Just show up and leave! It's that easy.
Such an inspiring man! Can not wait to take him for 160. Accent is a bit difficult but besides that you just show up and leave to get an A
Extra credit !
Couldn't have picked a better calculus 1 teacher
Best teacher at AVC. He uses scratchers for his exams so if you don't know the answer just scratch !
Amazing lectures and an amazing man
Such a caring man. Willing to help you succeed any way he can.
Easiest calculus teacher I have taken! Highly recommend.
Michael Tran gave the most detailed lectures. His test were very easy and most of the problems were problems he gave as an example on the board. He offers a lot of extra credit so there are opportunities to make up points lost. He offers great help in his office hours so don't forget to take advantage of those.I would take him again if I could.
He casually rates himself, be mindful of that as you read the reviews and see 3 short same rate/day reviews for ex. I think he's annoying. He thinks he is funny and wastes a lot of time trying to be. He is horrible with time management in classes. He knows math and you might potentially learn. He is super strict with attendance and being on time.
worst teacher I've ever had, he treats your grade like its a joke. He spends time in class focusing on stupid things that don't matter. He doesn't use the correct math terms and uses his own terms, so when I went to my tutors they had no idea what I was talking about. also gives "trick questions" on tests, and makes errors on tests alot
He is a pretty fair guy. Show up to class, do the homework, take the test, then go. I don't regret taking his class I just wish I could have used his office hours to my advantage
Easy class if you truly want to learn. I recommend taking him after 160 because anything before that he is super unclear.
Honestly my favorite professor by far. His statistics class was one of my favorites and one of my most successful classes yet. Really made me work for my A and I'm so thankful. Lots of homework and tests are made straight from homework packets. No book just homework packets. So hilarious, great sense of humor. I always enjoyed going to his class.
I took him for math 250 and 230, and he is by far the best prof ive taken. Very funny but if you get offended easily dont take him, his lectures are easy to understand, guves lots of homework and almost every day is a quiz or a mini exam, it sounds tough but study and do your part and you will be acing this class... ^__^
Michael Tran is the absolute worst higher math Professor at AVC. You will not learn anything in his class. I have always been good at math, and If it were not to YouTube, I would not even pass his class. A mini-exam (Multiple Choice) every week, he does not give partial credit. Either you get the correct answer, or you lose full points.
Ridiculous with grading and extremely unhelpful. I don't know who has the patience to deal with this guy. He is not a good instructor. He needs to be recalled. Scroll down and you will see he rates himself. A few ratings of the same day, same length, like someone is selling him in a commercial! AVOID! Worst math professor.
If you want to learn stats, dont take this class. He doesnt teach really and theres basically a quiz every class. If youre also hard of hearing, PLEASE skip this professor. The dude mumbles the whole lecture and gets mad if you ask to repeat it. Hes sweet and gives Rice Krispies most every class, but honestly cant teach to save his life.
He gives himself reviews on ratemyprofessor lol look at 12/7/18 and 12/9/18 thats all him. Hes pretty bad. Mumbles, uses his own math terms, and overall disorganized. He's really rude to students in class and in his office hours and you can tell its just a job to him and he doesnt care if students learn. Go take Mcloughlin instead for 200 courses
Not a lot of homework, but when there is it's easy. Definitely recommend. Super easy grading scale. His scratchers for test taking was a genius idea.
Mr. Tran is literally the worst math teacher I have ever had in my 15-16 years of schooling. This guy cant even use proper grammar on his worksheets and tests, is extremely unorganized, doesnt use proper math language, and confuses the f*** out of all of his students. I only took him because I had to but now, NEVER AGAIN!!
I loved this class! Prof. Tran is a very kind professor and does a lot to help his students. He literally prints out the notes for you, all you have to do is follow along and ask questions if you are confused and he will help you out. His quizzes are designed in a way to give you points even if you get the wrong answer your first try.
This class isn't easy by any means, but there are so many points floating around that you have many chances to get a good grade in the class even if you bomb a few times. Yes tran can sometimes be difficult to understand language wise, but hes always a good sport about it and you can ask him to clarify things.
Tran is very considerate and definitely worth taking. He made Calc 3, a daunting class, seem very easy and laid back. The amount of work is small; what seems hard is adjusting to his test format, but even that's rewarding in itself. Outside class, Tran is very practical, caring, and gave me solid advice that I still haven't forgotten. Took Fall2019
I took Tran for math 150 (calc 1) and this was a really fun class. Even though half of the class was online due to the pandemic he still tried his hardest to make sure all his students passed. He is a great lecturer and really cares, he always ask if you get the content and insists that you go to his office hours which help very much. Do Take !!!
Professor Tran can be outright mean to students, constantly putting people down whenever they get the wrong answer (when it's partially his fault that they're lost...) His English is understandable but his choice of words is often unorthodox, with the class ending up routinely confused and lost as to what he's saying. Not the worst but not ideal.
This class was an easy A if you took notes and payed attention to lectures. If you miss a class, goodluck. He will take away your attendance points if you don't participate when he calls on you. There are a total of about 5 exams with 10 questions each. We take a class quiz every week and they're only about 3 problems. Overall, the class is great.
Attendance is important! Get book to teach yourself. Has an accent (online schooling is hard) don't bother asking any questions, makes you feel stupid, will say"you just sit there and look pretty and smoking a joint " to every student who is confused. If you just need the credits, just need to pass and can shake off his unprofessionalism, easy A.
Prof. Tran has by far been the most comprehensive mathematics teacher Ive had. He has a great sense of humor that, from reading the comments, not many people understand. He ensures that all students participate in lectures and is incredibly patient with those that struggle a bit. In essence, I would definitely take him again for higher div. maths.
Professor Tran was one of the worst math teachers Ive ever had. I took this class during an all online semester and instead of him trying to make it easier for all students he would randomly call you out to work on a problem and if you didnt get it right he would basically call you dumb. Easily one of the rudest and unhelpful teachers Ive had.
He would call on random students during lectures to do a math problem, and If you didn't understand he would make you feel dumb and either kick you out of the class for that day or move on to the next person without even helping you understand how to do it. Quizzes like every other week and only 5 exams. There was never homework.
I find distance learning makes it difficult to properly know the professors in a classroom setting, but this is my experience. Prof. Tran, offers second chances on exams which is great, but also grades everyone together on quizzes so if a peer gets it wrong you do too. Terrible at communicating & rude at times, he will put you on blast for mistakes
Tests on things we didn't cover. Gives himself fake reviews. Garbage time management. Uses made up math terms. Puts people on blast 24/7, spends half the class roasting students. Kicks students from lecture for no reason, doesn't respond to emails, gives a 0 if your internet acts up. 0 empathy, 0 help. Easily the worst professor at AVC.
If you want to understand what is happening in calculus don't take tran. Every time I was in his class I dreaded being there because he was teaching was basically putting students on blast and expecting them to get the correct answer the first time. If you have connection issues your grades are at risk. I would never take his class again.
As long as you really pay attention (as you should), participate, and review notes, you will pass. He is a tad harsh on students but it seemed it was only to the ones that really didn't pay attention. Personally, I am terrified to ask for help but as long as you ask for the help you need and show you are willing to learn, he's super chill.
He was really good at explaining the material, but sometimes would use odd comparisons that didn't make sense. He calls on half the class to participate every day. If you don't get it right you loose points and if you are absent you also loose the points. All the tests are multiple choice and you are given a week to do them.
The class is really easy to pass if you show up and participate. You can easily lose points by not being able to answer his questions or not showing up, but overall not too bad. Pretty much no homework, and all the quizzes are done together. Funny teacher and you can tell he cares about the students.
I took his Math 115 course as a hybrid. He told the online students to "pretend" or "imagine" we could hear him or see the board because he put no effort in to the technical aspect of class. The only time he did so, was ONLY for 2 classes after several students complained to the dean. He then called us "emotional". Only passed due to study groups.
It was a hybrid class, he rarely acknowledged the online class & basically everything the other 1.0 review said. We overheard him tell an in-person student that "the online students are just watching tv" & said he "made quizzes worth more so the online students would drop out". Makes terrible "jokes" and definitely lacks emotional intelligence.
Takes a long time to get to the point, only prints papers out, no online grading, unable to see grade until after test, and unclear instructions.
His class can be hard at times but overall is a great professor.
Top 5 professors at AVC. His tests are pretty average some hard questions some a bit tougher. The first couple HW assignments are in the textbook but later on, he would just give us WS with like 2 questions. He gives you a lot of WS and paper that corresponds to the lecture. His grading is fair and you are updated with your grading constantly.
Easy class if you show up and participate, I would suggest communicating with the professor or other students if you miss something because all information taught does get brought up on quizzes. Overall one of the genuinely kind professors on campus and is more than willing to help in any way to ensure you succeed, speaking from experience.
Very nice professor. Doesn't use the book or canvas so everything is a handout. Takes too many breaks in lecture for me to focus as I have ADHD. Do not take him if you are neurodivergent. I could not focus in this class and only passed because of group work. Had to teach it to myself in the summer. Great guy but not the best professor for everyone.
Don't listen to the bad reviews, I had no issues with Tran. His grading criteria is very clear, his lectures are straight forward, and you mostly do group activities. He has to be one of the easiest professors teaching math. He mostly hands out notes which are very helpful towards tests. He is also funny and tries to make the lectures interesting.
Extremally unhelpful. Didn't respond/reply to any emails or actually update grades on time. Most of the assignments I turned in went ungraded or "past due" even when done ahead of time. Does not offer help or explanations of any kind for anything and responded "this is an online class, find outside resources such as the ones listed in the syllabus"
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! He degrades his students, blames his students as to why he is behind (even though he took two weeks worth of classes off), and is extremely sexist. He also threatened to drop me for missing a class due to my grandfather being in the hospital and proceeded to call me out in front of class. Seems cool but is the worst.
I enjoyed Professor Tran's class so much. His lectures and explanations were clear, and he took the time to clarify any confusion students may have had. He did crack some jokes that came off a little offensive or rude, but as a professor he was great. Never understood statistics as clearly as I do now! Make sure you're engaged in his class.
Professor Tran has a very funny personality. He makes his students laugh and makes the lecture easy to understand with great examples. The only thing is that he doesn't post assignments or grades on Canvas, everything is on paper but trust me it's easy. It looks like kindergarten work. Just pay attention during class and you'll be fine! Easy A.
This professor is very rude. He is not understanding at all.
Prof.Tran is great. A lot of his work is done by handouts, which you are able to write notes on. It's very easy to get lost if you aren't paying attention, and sometimes you may have to read a textbook/watch videos get get a better understanding since he doesn't really revist what he taught in previous lectures. Otherwise, he's great professor
Professor Tran has a fun teaching style, but you need to stay engaged in his class. The assignments are straightforward, but he can be tough if you don't put in the effort. Unstuck study was a lifesaver for practice problems!
Professor Tran is very tough on his students, goes off topic a lot, doesn't explain the material well at all, he has even misgraded assignments. He blames us for slowing him down, even though he talks about dumb things that don't relate to the class, and isn't gifted at teaching by any means. Avoid at all times if you care about your grade.
As a person that struggles with math, this professor was not helpful at all !! He goes off topic a lot and make jokes that are inappropriate, his teaching way is very old school and all assignments are on paper. Even tests are on paper and you don't get to see your grade on canvas. The semester that I took his class basically all student's had a C.
1000-point class; you cannot lose points, only gain them. About 6ish exams, 2ish group projects, the rest is homework from the textbook. Prepare a folder/binder, Tran hands out about ~70 pages at least throughout the year. Otherwise, pretty funny teacher, if distasteful humor at times. Exams aren't difficult if you study, homework is harder. 11/10
Prof Tran is awesome. This is the second class I've taken with him and he stays consistent. He gives handouts each class that are considered his notes. His exams are 10 questions max and are like lecture questions. Tran is funny if you don't take too seriously as well. Overall, he made diffyq very enjoyable and understandable. Strongly recommend!
I respect Professor Tran, but as it is, I must say that for anyone who struggles with Math, avoid at all costs. He's a tough grader, he's rude all the time, he makes unusually crude "jokes," and he grades very poorly. If anyone takes his class, I'd advise them to not "get so emotional about it." He must be investigated by the Dean.
Class is challenging, but this teacher makes it simple, homework thats assigned make sure to get it done early, the homework has reattempts to try, tests are a bit hard but still manageable, he responds and is accessible outside of class, in total 5 tests, and 10 discussions + homework that count, as long as youre consistent and try you will pass.
I felt like we were in a comedy skit every lecture. He made the materiel easy to understand which helped the students not get emotional in such a way. I do suggest reviewing the work and not just showing up to class just to get a grade. Because you can miss out on a considerable amount of points and tips for the exams. Why a 4? I smoked up an exam.
MATH220 - Nothing he says explains the homework or tests, the only way I was able to pass this class was teaching myself using the ebook and online resources. Lectures spend time talking vaguely about problems and doing generic examples, but the concept is not explained at all, and in order to do well on the tests you must understand the concept.
You will probably get an A or B, but it won't be because you have a great grasp of the material. I don't think he believes that this notoriously conceptually difficult class needs to be taught with any mathematical rigor. He will also say some baffling nonsense on a regular basis, like he doesn't believe that words have specific meanings.
If you've struggled with math then I'd recommend not taking his classes. I'm honestly surprised I passed. It's very easy to fall behind and missing one day of class is too risky. There was some moments where he's been “rude” to his students. Out of the 13 classes I've taken here at avc his class was the most difficult.
This class is actually just a fever dream from start to finish. Several concepts were omitted entirely near the end due to pacing issues and not enough time was spent on important concepts. Though I may just be getting so emotional in such a way.
