Keeps it interesting, cracks a joke here or there. Does a good job with the material and really knows his stuff. Assignments may intimidate those who don't care for the course material.
My favourite professor by far. A little intimidating at times, but only because he doesn't let you get away with vague statements. Heavy on the "effort" mark, which is sensible in a small section, so don't expect to skid by without ever attending a class. Be respectful and contribute to discussions and the class will likely be your favourite, too!
Definitely a helpful professor that made the uninteresting material interesting, while also covering a wide range and depth of literature. Definitely knows his stuff, and can lecture well. Helpful with questions or concerns, very approachable.
Wonderful Professor. Dr. Ullyot's enthusiasm and passion for 16th Century Literature is contagious; he's an encouraging Professor who facilitates an excellent learning environment. Though brilliant, Dr. Ullyot is down-to-earth and very helpful and approachable--he genuinely treats all his students with respect and deserves nothing less in return.
Wonderful Professor. Though brilliant, Dr. Ullyot is down-to-earth and very helpful and approachable--he genuinely treats all his students with respect and deserves nothing less in return. This class was challenging in a very positive way--it helped me improve in reading/writing/understanding not only 16th century texts, but literature as a whole.
Good enough prof, personally I cant stand poetry but I still did alright in this class manily because of the partcipation marks for tutorial. Just know the terms from the Lennard book and thats bout it, can bluff your way through the rest. Don't bother going to class, unless you actually wanted to take this class
Nice guy, approahchable and helpful, but has not taught a class after the first one - the students do all teaching. I pay tuition to learn from experts, not peers. In a class on Shakespeare, we didn't even approach the Bard until the 4th week of classes, and will do several other weeks about other writers. Wish he was a more involved prof.
Didn't enjoy his teaching style, felt that he unfairly changed the syllabus to add assignments that weren't worth any credit. Heavy courseload, which I usually don't mind, but prefer to do assignments that contribute to my final grade in a concrete way. Overall a negative experience.
This was my third class with Dr. Ullyot, and not by coincidence. His teaching style is as good as it could be given the material he has to teach. Cracks the occasional joke, is very approachable, assignments are research-heavy and time consuming, though he marks fairly. Effort required.
He is one of the worst professors I've ever had. The workload he expects his students to complete is over-the-top, wanting you to focus on only his class. He tells you that you can write on a topic of your choice, but then does not accept any of your options. Do NOT take class with him!
Plays favourites Good teaching style but doesn't mark fairly. Just be a pretty girl who barely talks in class and you will do well. There is no point in participating because he will give you a mark on whether or not he liked you.
Awesome prof! He always actively engages the class in discussions that are interesting and insightful. Passionate about teaching. My favourite class by far :)
Dr. Ullyot totally plays favourites, if you are not an English major don't even bother taking a class with him, he will ignore and make you feel you are wasting his time. You will only do good in his class if you share his opinions. His assignments are out of this world and the final exams even worse. Not a fair marker AT ALL
I took this class last year. Dr. Ullyot is utterly brilliant. Few times in our live are we graced with a mind that challenges our own to expand; Dr. Ullyot is one of these people. I highly recommend taking a class with him. Despite what others have said, if you work hard and get help when you need it - you certainly will benefit.
I didn't LOVE this class, but some of the other comments are rather ridiculous, in my view. I found Michael to be fair and engaging, but the course material elementary and basic - but necessary for a 1st year class. He did the best he could with the class size and content, and it was obvious he put a lot of effort into the class. :) I recommend him
a requirement for english major or minor and it was really easy. as long as you do your work and go to tutorials you will do good. it is a easy 200 level course and this professor knows his stuff and was very smart.
Great prof, he is difficult to contact outside of the lecture though. Very friendly and approachable. I am bothered by the use of unimportant readings and twitter posts. Heavy workload, is genuinely interested in understanding his students. Very great guy.
One of my favorite professors. Very friendly, approachable and helpful. Made me interested in Shakespeare and able to understand it like I never though I could. I highly recommend taking a class from him.
Great prof. I love that we were graded on twitter. This class is great if you put in some effort. Shakespeare is not as difficult as everyone always says/thinks/acts like. Just calm down and annotate.
Amazing Professor! You may not like Shakespeare but Dr. Ullyot is so engaged he makes you want to be too! His TA's were really good too. I would recommend Ullyot to anyone and I will try to take as many English classes as I can with him!
Prof. Ullyot was okay. I found that class dragged on and we didn't cover much of the text in lectures (although we did in tutorials).
He is an amazing prof and I'll be sure to take more English classes with him in the future. I found him to be a very easy marker. I thought I did terrible on the exam (as a didn't meet the page count for anything!) but somehow ended up with a 73%. His TAs are great as well. Highly recommended.
Ullyot's going a great job of integrating technology into the class room. He was super clear and his tests and exercises were fair and helpful. I highly recommend him.
Yawn...not super interesting at all! The whole Twitter thing is lame...don't take his class unless you want MANDATORY Twitter participation! The TA was good, but the class was pretty boring.
AMAZING professor. He is by far the most enthusiastic English professor I have come across and has a unique approach to Shakespeare. If you love Shakespeare, English, or an English major: taking a course with Ullyot is practically mandatory. I can hardly wait until fourth year to take another class with him! (203, 205, 411)
GREAT prof. It's obvious how much he loves teaching in the way that he takes a huge amount of his own time to thoroughly explain every aspect and expectation of his assignments. He puts in ALOT of time and effort so that students can do well. My second class with him, its clear if you put in the time, he rewards the grades.
I absolutely loved this class, and Ullyot is awesome - he's funny and brilliant. The readings were really cool and his lectures were always fun and interesting. He's very laid back and his grading scale is insanely easy (80% is an A-). Recommended!
This man is pompous, self-absorbed, thinks he's some sort of pioneer in the field of digital humanities and is not nearly as intelligent as he believes himself to be. His class was overly simplistic and reductive, he rambled in lectures far too much to the point that it was useless to attend them, and generally offered no interesting analysis.
Such a helpful prof! He is very interested in getting your feedback as a student, and really loves to teach. I highly recommend him to anyone who is majoring in English at the U of C!
Good guy who is trying something new in a field that is starting to feel stale. Well-spoken and knows how to engage people. Class sometimes felt like he bit off more than he could chew. Cares about his students and expects them to care about their work. Recommended.
Dr. Ullyot is a great professor. He uses various online resources to apply and emphasise his ideas. His assignments are all fair. Blogging is a really great form (of project) that Dr. Ullyot uses for interaction and marking. Although, he does tend to go off track causing class to get a bit confusing or boring - but the good days were great!
Ullyot is an awesome prof! I will say that you don't really need to go to the lectures because all you do is discuss the readings and nothing that's said will really help on the exams or papers. But I do recommend going because his discussions are engaging and interesting. Highly recommended for English majors.
Not very good at explaining assignments and is dependent on his TA's. His lectures are 80% of the time rambling. He's an easy marker, the final looked intimidating but if you get a lot of quotes on your dossiers you will be fine. Participation is marked by online activities, seemed a bit tedious but it ended up being fun and it's super easy marks.
He has a tendency to give too much work to be completed. His lectures are interesting and worth attending. Overall he is a good instructor and has great passion for subject matter. Is innovative in making opportunity for students to submit extra work in various mediums. However with so much reading and so many assignment it becomes too much.
I got a good grade in this class. That is not enough however because I did not learn as much as I could have. Especially since this was a Shakespeare course I thought I would learn much more. Hardly attended lectures because did not learn anything. The badge system was easy but explained poorly so it gave a lot of stress. Exercises were fun though
Amazing prof, brilliant, and highly erudite. Understands Shakespeare amazingly well and makes it fascinating to learn. He's a true believer in education and really values your ideas and thinking, challenges your assumptions and helps you grow.
Shakespeare was required for my English degree, and I'm so glad I took it with Ullyot. The semester I took it he decided to make the focus on Shakespeare and film, and it really enriched my experience. The group project was a lot of work, but it ended up being one of my favourite projects throughout university. A very enjoyable class.
Overall, Michael is a good prof. He clearly cares about the quality of his teaching, since he makes all expectations clear and posts a number of writing tips on his website. Grading seems fair enough. The reading list is quite long, but do-able. He makes good use of D2L.
Love this prof. He seems to genuinely care about his students, and offers a decent grading system (work hard enough, you can get an A). However, he can be a little slow to update D2L, reply to emails etc. Selects novels that are very interesting. I'm not an English major but I fell in love with English in Michael's class.
Dr. Ullyot is hilarious and enjoys teaching. Only a few assignments in the class. he always discusses the grading criteria for every assignment in class so you will have a clear understanding. Slow to upload lectures so attend class if that's what you want, otherwise just read your books and do assignments. Easy grades if you put in work.
The books are interesting & engaging. However, Michael rarely answers emails and persistently takes his time uploading lectures, grading criteria, etc to D2l. We can't always make every single lecture at school, so it annoys me when profs make it pretty well mandatory for students to be there 100% of the time.
Would have done better if he was more specific about his grading criteria. If you ask him a question he doesn't give you an answer just a vague statement that doesn't mean anything, so unclear
He is a nice guy, a decent marker but very frustrating if your not good at English. He does not answer his emails at all, posted the wrong time for office hours in his course outline, did not post up the grading rubrics for assignments even though he said he would, and did not post our marks for any assignment until close to the end of classes.
Ullyot is a fair marker. He's also a really chill guy whose lectures I found enjoyable even though I'm not particularly fond of Shakespeare. There's a group project in this course that is a fair amount of work, but it'll be enjoyable so long as you plan ahead and communicate with team members. Take home final hard if you didn'tkeep up with readings
He's a nice person, but not the best professor. He never answers emails, posted the wrong office hours, and takes an entire term to mark a 300 word assignment. Every assignment I argued for, I got marks back, so definitely try this. I only wish I could have argued the last assignment and final because I'm certain I deserved a higher mark.
Funny, relatable prof. He wants to see everyone successful. I would attend this class if you want to do super well because he gives you lots of insights of quotes that will most likely be on the final. Mad my 8 am English class more enjoyable. Doesn't mark insanely hard but definitely need to put in effort to do well.
My main complaint is he is a complete scatter brain. Lectures are unorganized and he takes forever to grade assignments. He promised a lot of feedback on our project proposals but only gave two sentences. Although, he does give a heads up about pop quizzes and the midterm is open book. There is less reading than most english classes.
Dr. Ullyot has good ideas about how to teach Elizabethan drama that fall short in execution. His lectures just aren't structured enough to really probe the plays and come up with interesting new ideas. If you want to contemporize the 16th century, why not incorporate theory? Freud makes Hamlet more exciting than an "unessay."
One of the best classes I've taken. Dr. Ullyot has extremely engaging lectures, mostly in a Socratic format - he poses a question, the class discusses. Not many profs can pull this off, but he creates such a great classroom dynamic people will vie for their turn to speak. He is passionate about what he teaches and encourages you to be as well.
Great prof! Really cares about his students and makes it easy to understand what is happening in the storys read. He emails back quickly, and gies out of his way to help his students. If English isnt your strongest class, he is a great prof to have.
He's a great prof if English isn't your strongest subject! He's a fair marker, and definitely does not make your entire grade based upon just essays. The discussion post are weekly, though they are just completion marks. He's a great professor and definitely makes English as an great gpa booster!
I've never had Dr Ullyot before, so I can only speak for him in 459. This class is terrible. It's very disorganized (deadlines shifting all the time), super confusing, and I haven't learned anything other than that I detest digital humanities (and I'm an English major). Seriously, avoid this class at all costs! TA should teach it instead.
Thank God this guy isn't going to be teaching English 205 again. I really dislike the way he handled the course and I wish they had removed 205 from the required courses list a year earlier so I wouldn't have to sit through his boring tirades. The exams where hard and he has a weird obsession with not using tech in class (laptops and stuff). Avoid.
Great prof! Accessible outside of class and willing to help, as someone who is not necessarily good at English I find Dr. Ullyot to be one of my favourite professors.
He rarely spoke about the text, instead he discussed elements of Shakespeare film; info that barely helped on exams. This is a huge problem as you had to write papers on the reading, and the reading itself is so complex and difficult to understand at times. The exams were hard; he expected far too much in such little time ie. 2 essays in 75 mins.
Dr. Ullyot was such an awesome prof to have for ENGL 253.02 (poetry) this past semester. GO TO CLASS, post in slack and do all the stuff that he says to do to get a good grade on the participation report. Readings were so much fun and there was some great discussion. Tutorials were a tad bland. You NEED the textbooks. Very fair grading!
He is such a nice professor and really fair with grading. This class (with Dr Ullyot) is great for students that need an option course in English. I would take any of his classes in a heartbeat and I have taken three courses from him so far.
He's an ok prof if you aren't an English major. It takes time to get simple things marked back, takes a while to answer emails, and tends to run out as the class ends so you have to hunt him down. Make sure you participate as you have to write a participation report at the end. Tends to go off tangents that can get boring. But, marks fairly.
I wish I could say I liked Dr. Ullyot. He put tons of effort into building a course and acccompanying course material. However, His final assignment was hairbrained, and he docked grades from my assignments after he had released said grades. Ullyot marks down like its a hobby. Ullyots course easily demanded triple the effort of my other courses.
He goes off on tangents and didnt provide anything below surface level or useful for improving my writing. Hes a tough marker and is a stickler for format, so beware. He also suddenly changed the course guideline a month before the end of class, so that the final exams content included material on an extra novel... cheers.
Never seen a group of students as well as the TA's more confused by a teachers outline lol. I will say I respect that he is firm with what he wants from you, but man will he punish you for not meeting his expectations. He's good at what he does and seems passionate but class can be a bit rough and he may come across as condescending at times...
I wanted to like Ullyot as you can clearly tell how passionate of a prof he is but he is easily one of the toughest markers Ive ever had, little feedback, and mixed guided lines for his assignment. If you make one small mistake, you will be docked marks heavily. He changed the course outline with less than a month of the course remaining. Avoid!
People say he's passionate, but I think Dr. Ullyot is just pretentious and superior. He's demonstrated no desire to nurture his students, he teaches us thru spotify & blog posts, he changed the final exam with no warning, and he has unreasonable demands for participation. He picked amazing course texts, but proceeded to make me dislike all of them.
Dr. Ullyot often comes across as condescending and elitist. He is extremely rigid (yet vague despite all his 'criteria') on what he expects. He has not shown any actual care to nurture learning and instead demonstrates a desire to "show off". As well, he changed final expectations three weeks before the exam with little to no notification.
It was fairly hard to actually communicate with him through email as he would basically beat you down about how incorrectly you formatted your email instead of answering your question. His feedback and responses to questions on slack were not always nice.
Dr. Ullyot is certainly... passionate about English, which I can respect; however, his style of teaching is another thing entirely. Online is not his thing, and he teaches primarily through podcasts, his social medias plastered all over; he seems far too scatterbrained and he comes off mighty pretentious. Strange, lofty demands for participation.
Dr. Ullyot is a very passionate teacher, it's clear he loves English. However, he comes off as pretentious and condescending to his students who, in a second year class, obviously don't have the same close reading/essay skills that he does as a PhD holder. Vague expectations, uses MLA 7 instead of MLA 8 for some reason???
I am shocked by all of the negative reviews for Dr. Ullyot. He is really such a nice prof who is very passionate about what he's teaching. He made 'moving online' easier as he incorporated podcasts into the lectures and was extremely helpful with shifting deadlines. His lectures were very interesting and I learnt a lot about Paradise Lost.
I feel like I took a totally different class from some of my peers; if you followed what was expected of you (which was very well defined) it was generally an easy grade and I found him to be smart and engaging. Different strokes, I guess! I also had a family death during the term and he was super accommodating, which I greatly appreciated.
This was a great intro to some classic works - I found Dr. Ullyot's podcasts to be really helpful and the requirements/expectations well laid out. I would like to add that he did not end up changing the final (as is alluded to in other posts) even though he had every right to; the entitlement from some of my classmates was downright embarrassing.
TAs graded most of the assignments and taught the lectures. Ullyot 'taught' via his spotify podcasts, probably to boost viewership, and then graded us on assignments in which we just proved we listened to them. He was disorganized in his course delivery and aggressive when asked for no last minute changes. I loved the course material and TAs tho
Brush up on your grammar because he is a stickler for all things grammar and his favorite punctuation is the semicolon. Be prepared for him to not answer your questions politely or have an answer at all. You will fail this class if you are not good with grammar, punctuation, poetry reading, or don't like to speak up in class.
Be prepared to read poetry. For some reason, Ullyot decided that a Literature After the 1700s class meant that all he had to teach was poetry. Also be prepared to participate, if you don't you likely will not pass. Do not expect helpful feedback or clear instructions for assignments, you will not get any. Good luck!
He grades papers like its a 500 level class and his feedback isn't helpful at all. When answering questions, he's rude and not straight to the point. For a Literature after 1700 class we mostly talked about poetry and a lot of the readings are hard to keep up with. Its likely that I'll never take a class with him again :)
Dr. Ullyot shares a lot of useful resources for us to succeed in his class and he is evidently very passionate about English. I found his grading scheme to be fair, he was always organized for class, easy to get into contact with, and treated his students with respect.
Dr. Ullyot helped me to appreciate poetry significantly more than I did before this class. While the majority of the class focussed heavily on poetry, we read two novels as well. He was very passionate about what he was teaching and he made the material easier to interpret. While he is a tougher grader, his rubrics and expectations are clear.
His lectures were confusing and disorganized, his grading criteria was impossible to meet or understand, and he was borderline abrasive when asked questions. He didn't listen to student responses and never went into the racism/ sexism apparent in some of the texts that he chose, saying instead that the "poems were pretty". 100% would not recommend
His class was not an English class (ARTS 503) but he graded as if it was. His expectations were not super clear and he assigned too many readings for a non-English class. He was funny and when you reached out to him he did his best to help out but it was hard to sometimes reach him. He graded based on 3 unclear assignments as well.
Cared overly about class participation (worth 15%) even though the class was 100+ people so it was impossible for everyone to speak each class. His course content did not mesh well evidenced by the 2 final term papers both due the same day with very different topics. Overly specific writing criteria down to how long each quotation had to be. Awful.
Dr. Ullyot is a great lecturer and this class was very manageable. Although rubrics are occasionally unclear, he marked assignments fairly. The amount of participation required was daunting, but not completely unreasonable. However, I found the assigned texts to be a bit limited in diversity (in era and authorship) for a survey course.
Prof Ullyot likes to flaunt his expansive lexicon in whatever way he can, whenever he can. His rubrics are full of ambiguous, unhelpful buzzwords that leave the student unsure of how to proceed. Knows what he's talking about, speaks passionately, and always keeps lectures interesting, but his slides were basically useless. Not a very tough grader.
This is the oddest professor I have ever had and not in a good way. He acts as though he was put on this earth to grace us with his knowledge. His teaching style is odd to follow as he loves to hear himself talk and expects you to memorize his rants. This was also the hardest final ever, not a single person finished or left early.
Professor Ullyot is very passionate about literature, but he is not passionate about teaching. He does not understand that he needs to engage with his students. Loves listening to himself talk. There is absolutely no reason that I should be paying $800 for a course just to listen to a PODCAST that is already recorded and FREE to access.
He's alright I guess? But his lectures were pretty boring. I despised my TA but other than that the class is average
He was super helpful outside of class and his lectures weren't too bad either. He seemed to be super passionate about the books and English in general which was both good and bad. Assignment guidelines were super clear too and he explained it more in or out of class if needed. His lectures were also engaging as he often asked your interpretations.
Seemed like a cool dude. Went to maybe 5% of the classes, only went in for exams.
Ullyot takes so long to give you your mark back. The semester has ended and we're still waiting on 85% of our final grade with no communication from him whatsoever. Didn't even show up to our final exam. His lectures were uninspired and he seemed unprepared for them almost every time, making us students have to lead discussions.Really disappointing
His lectures consisted of him yapping the entire time and it felt dull at times. You would need to go to get the passages that MAY be on the exams. Very nice and would give you feedback but only if you asked.
Rude, arrogant, disinterested, ill prepared. What little he taught he repeated every single lesson. Overly complicated and persnickety assignments constructed on whims. Cancelled a bunch of classes because he clearly had nothing to teach. Writing a participation report to justify our grade on our effort is not only ironic but insulting.
253.03 was my easiest class yet. Ullyot's books are interesting, he goes over them in class, and he tells you important passages that you then write about on the test for an A+. People on here dislike that he talks a lot, but if you go to every class, read on time, and write down what he says, it's a guaranteed A. I loved this class!
The lectures provide all the info you need to succeed in the exams, which are ridiculously easy (open book, you can bring in any notes you want + the books, as long as everything is a physical copy). His grading criteria is clear & he's an easy marker. Him and TA are available outside of class. I'm taking a course with this prof again next year :)
ENGL 305 was not listed, class was not 307 I took 305. Prof Ullyot was extremely fair, gives good feedback accessible outside, highly intelligent knows content, caring, inspirational, quite witty. Attending not mandatory but highly recommend taking notes in class verbasum- Underline text discussed and write next to it exactly as he says for exams
305* While I felt the final was a bit much to do in the time given, the rest of the course was super interesting thanks to Dr Ullyot! He clearly cares deeply about what he is teaching and just as much about his students, could not recommend enough!
Professor Ullyot's lectures can be a bit rambling, but engaging if you stay focused. The exams are manageable with the open-book format and good use of the textbook. I found unstuckstudy helpful for exam prep alongside my class notes.
Professor Ullyot was amazing! Not sure where all these negative ratings are coming from because that wasn't my experience at all. He was organized, entertaining, passionate, and intelligent. The lectures were captivating and I was excited to attend every class. The exam was pretty tricky considering the time given, but fine if you read everything
Not an ENG course, but my worst professor so far. I learned nothing from this course; as other reviews say, he talks to hear his own voice in lectures. Only the heavy readings he gave taught anything. Lectures are mandatory, and he'll give participation grades based on whims. He doesn't believe in giving high grades & his rubrics are super vague.
THIS IS FOR ASHA 222. I could tell he cared about our class, but he had some unrealistic expectations for excellence and offered little feedback for our papers. He also lectured in a pompous manner, despite there being times where he had little knowledge about the topic he was teaching. He shouldn't be trying to teach science as an English prof.
