The best (perhaps the only one) ECON teacher at UBC.

very helpful
pretty good prof. But the final is much harder than the midterm
Young professor. Big on the theory. I didn't get a great mark in this course but it is definitely not a hard course. You can definitely get an A if you try.
Great prof. Willing to help students and shows respect to students.
the textbook sucks, and it makes the course sucks too
He is one of the worst profs I've ever had. The lecture is not well organized, and really boring. Even his note is not organized at all. The textbook is not helpful as well. TERRIBLE TERRIBLE!!!
His midterm was pretty much the same as the past ones except he added one an extra harder question on it! I think the course is not hard if you really pay attention to what he is teaching in class. Don't buy the textbook, it useless just read his notes!!
Very good prof. Lectures clearly and explains graphs and equations well
Very very nice person. But his exams depend heavily on lecture notes(he adds many things than textbook does not include), and he excludes many things the textbook does have.So you really NEED his lecutre notes. I did not use the textbook to study, only used his notes. Exams are not hard if you do all his practice exams.
MT was hard, but the final just okay if you pay attention in class and do all the past final. Very helpful when you ask for help. the course itself was not that easy so it requires some work in order to get good grade
His notes were clear, tells you step by step how to get certain models or concepts. sometimes I found that unnecessary, but otherwise his notes were awesome. The textbook was helpful..but I think I wasted my money on it.
VERY VERY nice prof!He gave us additional office hour on Sat and Sunday when we were having exam!Very helpful in and outside class.Notes very clear.Midterms were tough, but final was okay.Very helpful.I learned a lot from him!!
Nicest and most helpful prof, he held more than 5 office hours before the final. His midterm averages were really low though, mostly cuz they were too long. He's eye candy too.
Expect 4-5 pages of notes per day, difficult homework and midterms where the averages are ~50(Last year at 56 then 52). Really nice guy who will help you if you need it, but you have to work hard for a good grade, as he does almost no examples in class. Good Prof.
Hard exams. Tons of class notes. Very helpful. Very clear in class (English as a first language).
Expect to write 4-5 pages per day, hard midterms and assingments that are VERY ESSENTIAL to the learning process of this course, if you work hard and are able to solve the hw you'll realize that it was EASY.
Tough MT and HW. Be prepared to do all the HW. Final is OK, if you know how to do all the assignments. HW marks were easy to get(10% of the term grade).
the MT was fine, the Final exam was quite brutal, but you WILL DEFINITELY learn from his class, do the problem sets, the Varian text is worthless, your lecture notes are essential in this class, he was just amazingly helpful, one of the best profs i've had, and it was a pleasure to have been one of his students
tough. good luck
Good prof, not an easy class though. Attendance is mandatory simply because he doesnt put up his notes and you need to be present to copy them down. The class can be kinda monotonous. Exams/midterms are hard-ish.
excellent prof. kind of cute too. lectures were interesting. exams were easy if you did the assignments. must go to class for notes (1 class = 6 pages of notes).
lectures were extremely boring and sometimes incomprehensible, even though he had straight from the textbook notes..it's your traditional econ class with lots of math and graphs, etc. i understood the class when i reread the notes...he's extremely helpful outside the class, even arranged a special econ review session for us non econ majors..
super nice prof who is patient and respects everyone. Midterm and final were easy if you understand his notes. Definitely the best prof in UBC. Take his class and you will not regret it.
Very Clear lecture. If you do attend all the lectures you wont need to read the textbooks to get a good grade. The textbooks is useless if you read all the notes, which is posted online(Usually only a few hours before the lecture), and attend the lecture. Strongly reconmand his class.
An excellent professor, very hard final. You may understand everything but get a really bad mark. Lecture are not very useful for the assignment and exams. Class average was around 65
He is not a good prof. The class average on the midterm was 51% and he accused the class of not studying hard enough. All 200 people. It never crossed his mind that we didn't understand the concepts because he is an awful teacher. His assignments are very diffcult and math-based.
notes are setup for monkeys.Show up, copy the overhead. He needs better preliminary information so that you know what is going on before the lecture.Exams are fairly hard, doing the previous exams and problem sets helps. SLOW MARKER.Didn't give us our homework or project grades before or even after the final.Lectures are clear. Often late for class.
hight NOT recommanded!!! extremely unclear lectures and endless notes taking!!! on top of that, super low class average(only64!!!) His classes are definitely one of the worst I've ever attended!!!
hard course with tons of notes, including slides + lecture notes. not clear lectures and hard exams. he gave us past m/ts and finals, which did help a lot. good luck!
Good prof. Very interesting materials. The final wasn't hard, but the class average was pretty low. Midterm was much harder than the final exam.
For econ 303, going to class is mandatory because the textbook is completely useless. everything you need is in his notes. midterm (35%) was very easy. final (45%) was a challenge, mostly because there's like 5 really different topics after the midterm. good prof cuz he posts tons of old exams that are helpful. office hours are scary.
He is a very nice prof. Notes are clear and helpful, don't even buy the textbook. Do the assigned HW and practice exams, they are really useful. Highly recommanded!
Great teacher, easy to understand lectures, really approachable during office hours. Spent longer helping us than he said he could.
Professor Vaney looks like Adam Sandler. Why couldn't i think of that sooner??! He's a really good with his teaching and i had a lot of fun in his class! Study the notes in excrutiating detail and you should do well in his class.
Love him :p
One of the nicest prof i have come across in my years in UBC. But dang is he hard! If you want to get some real learning experience then take a course with him ..doesn't have to be 465
Go to class for models that won't be in the handouts and try not to be distracted by his smile when he uses it :P
easy lectures as you only need to copy notes(but he writes very fast on the projector so you have to catch up with the pace). The class notes is very useful, I guess they act as a hurdle for students who don't attend class. Exams are mostly based on the notes! but you have to study the notes very carefully!
Vaney is not a good teacher for some students, in econ 303. The major reason is he doesn't have online notes, and he doesn't use text. Unless your extermely intentive your f***ed. He gives past finals/midterms/quizzes. Completely quantative teacher, but uses very simple math (linear functions, Sample size 2).
Love him! himself with his TA is lovely team! comprehensible and helpful.
well, the stuff on econ 355 is easy.... the exams seems easy but the marking is very unfair...too picky ... he doesnt scale up not an easy class at all
He's great! Highly recommend him. If you show up, pay attention and take notes then you will pass. A little slow at marking.
Someone said he's the cutest prof in econ department!LOL! 355 is ok... He tested us with harder questions on related topic students wanted to have for the final exam. It's NOT a smart choice to assign him any topic for exams--even if he give u chance--couz he will make the exam much harder than u expect.
He is really nice and the exams is fair, but not easy. Take him if u really want to learn the stuff, but definitely not a GPA booster course
He knows his stuff, and he's pretty witty. The course material is interesting and I think it'll be useful. Be forewarned, his exams aren't easy. Class is mandatory, because he doesn't post his lecture notes online. Our class did really well on the midterms so he made the final really hard. Definitely not a GPA booster.
Took 303&365 w/him 09spring&summer. Very good at teaching, but at times make you sleep as talking too much (especially in the summer). 303 is much harder because of the standard materials it must have accordingly. NOT a GPA booster but learning a lot for sure. get HW back from econ office. Will take hime again for more on markets and organizations.
Endless note taking. His notes are EXTREMELY disorganized, which totally kills my interest of reading them again. He gives us options of choosing exam questions, but the exams are still UNEXPECTICALLY HARD coz they include many topics that he promised would NOT be covered in the exams.
Contrary to criticism, his notes are NOT disorganized and the exam materials are NOT far beyond the scope of lecture notes. You need to understand and be flexible with your knowledge instead of just reiterating what is being said in the lectures.
His notes are very clear. He knows his stuff really well and use a lot of math to help gain intuition. Enjoyable class!
i actually had him for econ301,355 and 303.i think he looks like the guy in movie "click". His lecture is not the most interesting BUT it is economic.he is helpful and notes provide a lot of materials to help students with the course. recommended
Very arrogant and useless teacher, endless note taking and not very clear.
Extremely helpful teacher
You must attend class and take detailed notes. His textbook is a $130 "resource" that I returned immediately. Class notes are sufficient to do well enough but he speaks very, very quickly and doesn't always label his axes.. annoying. You can tell that he doesn't really care but he's not bad, overall.
Minimum effort guy. Wants to have a low class average, so he makes easy concepts confusing and doesn't explain anything.
Has an awful habit of keeping the classes really easy and test really hard. Very lazy. Often posts practice questions without answers. Very easy to get disengaged during his class & you have to be responsible to pay attention or you are not going to understand it. Never once did we use the text book, waste of $130
Clear notes. Remember to study the graphs for exams and you'll do fine. Final exam is similar to practice one, but you really have to understand how to do the question! No memorization for this course.
250+ pages of notes copying..not joking. He doesn't post notes or anything. 5 pages of notes every class. HARD prof, made easy stuff very complicated. MT/Final was doable but don't expect a high mark from him.
Every class was lots of note copying. He went really fast and does not give you a chance to absorb the material. The midterm and final were challenging.
Took 301 and 355. Terrible professor. Endless note-copying. Impossibly and ridiculously difficult exams. He makes things seem easy in lecture and focuses only on concepts yet the problem sets and exams are very math-intensive. As a straight-A student, I'd be lucky to pass his courses. To summarize - stay far far away.
The class average was 55% but he always scales it to 70, which is fair but I find it very stressful. He makes econ very mathematical, and basically expands the appendix derivatives every lecture. Tests are just as or harder than assignments. Expect to put in a lot of effort unless you're a maths major.
Vaney's problem sets and exams are ridiculously difficult. Be prepared to copy down a lot of notes during lectures. It is difficult to do well in his classes.
U will be copying notes everyday, his midterms and finals are very hard, but i still did extremely well, he now scales if the average is too low.
I really enjoyed his class. I felt the assignments were fair, although he didn't always give a lot of notice on them. Not the most structured class in terms of time-frame but if you are ok with that, take him! Really good guy and quality instructor. Generous office hours close to exams.
Great prof, go to the lectures and pay attention and you will do very well!
Very easy assignements, fair test, overall one of the better teachers in the ubc econ department.
Michael is my favorite Econ Prof at UBC!! Assignments are more like bonus marks. I took his 325 and 355, I felt that 365 is much more easier than other courses... more based on Econ 301 stuff..and some policies/history to remember.. Easy to get an A in this class if you memorize his notes and do all his past exams (not a lot).
he is so super super nice but damn he is hard! he makes the material in class so easy and then tricks you on exams! he is super helpful in office hours and he will make sure you don't leave without understanding..plus, he has a great smile (;
Michael Vaney is the man. I had him for four undergrad courses at UBC. Textbooks are never actually required which helps save money. He's one of the few profs who actually provides old finals and midterms for practice in the econ department. The level of math in his classes is a bit higher than other profs, but it was great prep for grad school.
As interesting game theory sounds, I urge you NOT to take his class. He is a very good prof., but the class structure is terrible. Assignments and exams are unfairly hard, and as there are no online notes or textbook usage, if you miss a class you are screwed. His class isn't more 'challenging' as it is 'stifling-ly hard'. He teaches well though
I agree the comment right below. He teaches fast, you will fall behind if you miss a class.I would say he is a nice guy but not responsible,he just uploaded the solution of last 2 problem sets a couple days before exam.He also takes awfully long the mark quizzes, problem sets and even exams.Today,I finally got my grade of last term.AVG is 70%
I disagree with the comments below. I came into this class having only ever taken any econ in high school and put little to no effort outside of class and found that just paying attention and taking notes was enough to get me quite a high mark. I thought the homework was at times challenging but the midterms quizzes and finals were easy.
Dont listen to the guy below, his vaney experience was econ 221 and everyone at ubc knows that everything below 300 is a joke. He is by far the hardest and most intensive prof in econ. his 326 is ridiculous as well. if you dont believe me just go to a class and see how many math/stats majors are taking his course.
He's a very good prof; his notes and explanations are clear. Go to lectures and you'll do fine, though sometimes he goes a bit too fast, but re-read your notes and you'll be able to understand. Assignments and sometimes quizzes can be quite challenging, but midterm and final was fair. Definitely recommended! :)
if you are aiming for a 70, take vaney. if you're aiming for 90+, it will be hard. His notes are all you have to study, his midterm and finals are easy either. He did scale however.
His lectures are extremely unclear. Unless you really like graphs and calculations then don't take this class. You'll be taking a lot of notes you'll likely not look at again. The text book is far more helpful than the prof. He expects you know know a lot before class! Course was very challenging for non-econ majors; expect to study a lot.
Haven't taken a course that can turn me into a happy nerd in a very long time, and he did it! He teaches incredibly well. Very humorous too! Can't possibly be bored in class. His office hours are extremely helpful. He spent about five mins explaining the stuff that I would spend hours to figure out on my own. Best prof i have ever encountered!
He focus on mathematics a LOT.Not really explained about the concept. His test are all calculation questions which is fair hard. However,he provides past exams to you.Assignments are very hard.Be prepare to study A LOT.He ends up scaling though.class average was 72% this term.
Most ridiculous class I have ever taken! Class average on the midterm was 45%. He teaches in class and gives lots of notes and practice problems but when you open up the exam its like its written in a completely different language. It is nothing that is ever taught. Glad and surprised I survived with a decent mark.
bad explaning professor. does not know at all how to answer students' questions or how to make sure that people understand him. course content consists of a bunch of models. that's why you can never go into great detail and contribution to your economical understanding will be low. weird scoring system on the exams. but even though, not too hard.
This is a tough course to do very well in. It is marked as 10% problem sets, 30% midterm, 60% final. In his class you basically just sit there and write out his notes, so it was pretty boring. I prefer a more lecture based prof like McIntyre. The final was pretty long & hard; there was one question on optimal tariffs that the class was not taught.
Textbook is not mandatory. I stopped reading it completely by the midterm and did fine. The Quizzes were very hard the class averages were 40 and 50%. Midterm was pretty easy. He scales ALOT in the end. The class average was 69%. Grades are released late, January 3rd.
An excellent mentor and a very cool prof. Make an effort to get to know him and you will benefit from his loose style.
Nice guy but HARD COURSE!. I thought this course would be easy to understand but his teaching style is just way to disorganized and not clear it was hard to study his notes. Nothing is based of the book, I didn't even open it once. I really like him as a person but never again will I take a course with him. I hope I don't fail the final.
Well didn't buy the textbook. But did very well in the class thanks to his notes. Attending class isn't mandatory but will do well if your go. Notes are very thorough and detailed. Go to office hours ad ta hours. Lot of problem sets so better keepup with all the work. If you learn the material easy exams.
Very nice prof. But keep in mind, he does not provide any of his notes on connect. His writing was terrible, and often I missed quite a part. However, his exams are very simple, and at last, he did a huge amount of scailing. Just keep in mind that you should attend all the classes to get good marks.
This is the worst course I have ever taken and the worst prof I have ever had. If you value learning, avoid at all costs. I was really excited for this course initially, but Vaney did not teach according to the course description. It was so uninteresting that I had to force myself to go to class. It was irrelevant to life, boring, and tough
Going to class is crucial. That's the only way you're going to get notes and learn the concepts because the textbook is USELESS. DO NOT WASTE THE MONEY ON IT!!!!!! He goes fast in class and has messy writing but it's interesting and with hard work you'll do great! It was NOT the hardest class in the world.
Although he's a nice guy, his explanations are not good at all since he skips a lot of steps and never explains them. Even his office hours are a whirlwind. Lots of math involved so be prepared for that. The first part of the course - if you have done stats before, you're fine, if you haven't, google is your friend.
His midterm was tough but fair. Constant note taking each class but overall a really good prof. First time he used a textbook which was pretty much useless.
Going to his class is crucial for summer school at least. He went over slides very fast but try to catch every word if you can. His quizs are hard and midterm is okay.
Problem sets are tough as they include some material neither covered in class nor the textbook. They are doable if one looks for notes online. Exams (both midterms and finals) are easier than the quizzes.
Very nice professor. Notes are crucial for the course. He extended the text book material and test things based on the notes. His scaling up is really helpfu. Had only one day to prepare for the final so it is definetely a course you will get a high grade as long as you work hard.
GO TO HIS CLASS AND TAKE NOTES! INTENSE CONCEPT AND MATH, therefore DRY but if u are good at math, he is ur GPA booster. utilize his office hour, he is much clear and helpful in office hour, very approachable
Why would I ever wanted to take Michael? Do not take his Game theory-strategic thinking. This course is tough, and he didn't make it easier than the textbook. He always wanted to grade you harsh on the midterms, so that you know you need to study for the final. If you are in Econ, don't take him as a GPA booster, take his courses seriously.
Better learn to take notes quickly and listen and understand all at the same time because he waits for no man. He doesn't put his lecture notes online so don't skip class.
Writes notes by hand and doesn't post them online. Not very good if you miss a class and don't know anyone to get notes off of. Problem sets very challenging, get help from TA's in discussion.
his teaching style is really awesome, coupled with erudite materials the lectures are really hot and amazing-one of the best professors i have come across during my undergraduate stay in UBC
This course requires a lot of note-taking in class and NEVER SKIP CLASS. Prof assigns quite a lot of assignments and policy reviews but he sometimes extends the deadline. Jot everything down and you should receive a good grade. :)
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Average is basically a fail, and his midterms are such a disaster.
Both mid-term and Final were extremely difficult, especially for the final. Even if you have revised them, you still don't know how to do it (this is my very first time to leave blanks on the final and I really think that I gonna fail in this course...(hope not)) Better not to take his course if you care your GPA.
Basically, just copy all his notes word for word. You should be able to get at least a C+ ,that is you will have to copy notes for 1.5 hrs straight. If you come from an economics background, this class is 80% review from 301. Since his schedule is given, just go to the lecture you find useful. Exams are not easy, but review isn't really necessary.
Game theory is not a second year level material but Vaney made it more difficult. His worst side is that he is super disorganized & he never posted his notes online. Hence you have to keep on copying everything he writes in the class. His pace is also very fast, so invest a lot of time for this course. Read the textbook by yourself as it's helpful
If you are a good note-taker, and have a decent understanding of math, this course truly isn't that bad, though it is challenging. Make use of office hour and tutorials. He gives bi-weekly problem sets to solve, which usually have questions taken from past midterms and finals. This class isn't easy, but it's not Math 105 either.
Vaney is SUPER educated in game theory. The course does require a bit of math even though math is not a pre-req. Tests weren't that hard, if you understand the problem sets and previous exams you should be solid in this class.
First 8 am class ever but I barely skipped it since he is a good lecturer. Maybe his hand writing was not clear to read but he gave us enough explanation to understand the contexts. The midterm was really hard and the average was low. But the good thing is he will scale the grades up and gave us an easy final.
By far one of my favourite professors at UBC. You'll have to copy his lecture notes that he writes by hand in class since he does not post his notes online but he's very clear in his lectures and is extremely helpful during his office hours. Exams were not overly difficult if you study and review the assigned problem sets and past exams.
GO TO CLASS otherwise you'll fail. He does not post lecture notes and everything on his exams are from the lectures.
Great prof overall. Exams are hard, but it's upper level econ, so it's to be expected. Micro lectures are straightforward but comprehensive. Would take again.
he is a very nice and helpful professor. His exams are hard but he will scale up :)
This class is not easy, but it is one of the most interesting classes I have taken during my undergrad - I highly recommend it if game theory floats your boat like it floats mine. He does not post lectures online and lectures quickly, but he is clear and helpful during office hours . Start studying early for the final / do past exams. Good luck!
Michael's very approachable, but lectures are hard. He doesn't post notes online so get ready to write a TON.
Not a great prof, assignments are pretty challenging. His tests are easier than the lectures/assignments indicate, BUT the class average is still much lower than other profs! Find someone else if you can.
Good Guy. Blue Polo.
Go to class! Give his lectures a chance and you will learn lots.
Super helpful prof, as long as you attend his lecture, you would learn a lot. Even though there are a lot of notes to take in every lecture (he dose not post online ever), I would like to recommended it. I guess Econ 221 is the easiest course for 200-level Econ, and Micheal's section is supposed to be one of the best one for this course.
Ignore the post saying that his exams are bombs. His midterms are definitely doable if you go to lectures and work through the problem sets. His notes is extremely useful and clear when study for the final exam. His class average is much lower than other prof's but I don't regret taking his course:)
I suggest you guys don't take his class, because his class is a note-taking class. You have to keep writing notes for one hour and twenty minutes, and you will never ever catch up his writing speed. Most importantly, his writing is not clear. Besides, the class midterm ave is around 52, and I think the final will harder than the midterm.
Biggest regret in my undergrad life after 4 years and countless econ courses. He has zero structure in teaching; all you do is blindly copy lecture notes that have little structure and get lost. Moreover, excessive workload and everywhere in my room is research for his lit review paper and presentation assigment. Avoid this class at all costs.
Never had such an instructor that is so bad in teaching. All he does is write endlessly on a document camera without pausing or teaching and students just copy whatever is on the board. He seems to think we can all follow his thought process and as a result he doesn;t explain crucial things or define things. Handwritting is messy at times too.
Way harder than even ECON425 , which is usually considered the hardest ECON course at the VSE, because it is so hard to follow him in lectures because of the way he teaches by making you copy his notes. He lacks the ability to clearly breakdown concepts and teach. He is harder than even econ425 because he lacks teaching ability
Had him for his 3rd year version of 466 too and I found the 3rd year version far better and it felt like he was clearer when teaching the 3rd year version. However, the midterm average was concerning. Overall he is a nice person but the class felt unorganised at time which evens out to "average"
Had him for 221 and 365. Tips for success: 1) Make sure to do his practice midterms and finals. The actual exams will have questions based on the practice questions 2) Attend lectures. Notes are not posted. 3) Complete problem sets. Not going to lie, pretty hard classes so don't do them unless you are really interested in the topics.
Talks pretty quickly and hand-writes the class notes so if you miss class it's virtually impossible to access the material. Super caring guy, if you get to know him and actually listen to what he's saying it's easy to get a good grade. Class average for both midterms were super low but if you put the work in you can easily do well.
2 mid, 2 surprise quizes, 3 assign and a final. He doesn't post anything so you have to go to class to write down notes. Theory is taught in class (general idea), but all mathematical questions in exams that he doesn't go over. Focus on PS and practice exams. Both midterm average was 60%, quiz 40%, but he does curve it. Good luck.
Difficult. The material intrinsically was not difficult (like some more mathematical courses), but his structure of the class, as long with lack of clear supplementary material made the class more difficult than it needed to be. Would avoid if you want a class with a clear structure, outcome, and knowledge that if you study, you'll do well.
I almost never rate or criticize or professor, but Vaney made me do so for the first time. - The class was pathalogically disorganized, nothing posted online, seemed like a schizophrenic mess - The syllabus was not posted until the second week and was missing key information (office hours, contact information) - doesnt respond to emails
I have never critiqued a prof before, but Vaney was so horrible, I felt that it was my duty to warn his potential students. Vaney simply acted like he did not care about student progress, learning of well being. This was also the most disorganized course ever, he always posted assignments late and they took forever to be graded. Never take Vaney
He might be a great caring person, but that doesn't change the fact that he really does not know how to teach. Classes are barely writing math on papers. Nothing is explained properly, severe lack of practice examples, and just overall, lack of knowing how to teach
Vaney is very nice and professional. clear lecture and always cares about the students. you will definitely learn a lot from Vaney. if u want to major in Econ, go ahead and take Vaney. However, do not expect to get high marks without studying. it applies to all courses though
Great lecturer - interesting, engaging and intelligent. The course material is interesting and he provides enough resources to do well in his class. Definitely one of the best Economic professors.
Vaney seemed underprepared and like he did not care about his students whatsoever. Poor communication and highly unreliable at posting assignments, notes, getting back to emails, etc.
By far the worst professor I have ever had.
The worst prof by far in econ. Poor communication with students. Bad at teaching, unclear lectures, tests/quizzes that were not covered in the lecture materials. Talking about maths and stuff rather than how things work and how we should apply the math into the materials. Avoid him if possible!
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD, 40% of students enrolled dropped his course. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS. He was behind on his lectures the whole term, threw 3-4 lectures worth of material at us in the last lecture. Horrible communication. He does not teach the material, just lists it on his board and expects you to get it. Dismissive to students.
Terrible Professor. No communication with students; does not show genuine care whatsoever. Teaches midterm material a day before the actual midterm. Avoid him at all costs.
He is really kind and helpful whenever I asked him questions.
This course gave me daily breakdowns. He spends 90mn writing on paper sheets. Condescending when you ask him to explain a concept. Half the program drew on dry financial maths, problem sets are a nightmare and made me cry. It's NOT an accessible course if you're not an econ major. For some reason he actually did not hate me
another comment said avoid at all costs. I'd agree especially given the online learning environment rn. lectures are quite boring and hard to learn from.
Awful introduction to University, within the first two weeks of class he had not even introduced himself. Within the first month, I was ready to change my major and wanted to drop out altogether. Tutorials were not set up until the second month. Nothing was made clear and he failed to show up on multiple occasions. Stripped my self-esteem. :'(
Literally the worst prof I've ever had during my 3yrs here so far. He's so rude to his students, condescending, gives the bare minimum during lectures and doesn't make any effort to be a clear teacher. Also just looks like Adam Sandler. If you took econ with this guy, don't let him discourage you, it gets better after him. Trust.
Worst prof I have ever had, rarely explained any concepts. Basically learned everything from the textbook and expected us to learn stuff which was not even covered
Don't know how this guy has 3.5/5. Worst instructor I've ever experienced. 0 communication with students, gave us final exam info 3 hours before exam. He ignored student questions if he didn't feel like answering. Did not show any care whatsoever for student well being, clarity, or knowledge. Would not have passed if I didn't get an angel TA.
Michael Vaney evidently doesn't care about his students' success. I took Vaney's ECON327 class online and he made very little sense. If you like to receive grades after submitting assignments and exams, don't take Vaney's class, he returned one of my classmates midterms only hours before the final! Beware and stay clear, this class is not fair.
Michael Vaney is a good guy, but not the best of profs, I like him as a person but I find him to be very challenging, especially if classes are online.
how does he have 3.5? the worst prof i've had, no communication. im convinced he just wanted us to do bad. not to mention that this prof's sections on the exams always had the lowest avgs compared to the the other part of the exams. too much unnecessary upper level content.
Michael is extremely condescending towards his students, and does very little to help his students succeed. We were assigned many problem sets and labs, yet he only gave us our marks for 3 of them. Avoid this dude at all costs.
THE WORST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY COLLEGE LIFE. EVER. EVER. EVER. Do not ever take any courses if you have a choice. He is no professional at all. I am doing a summer course with him. First midterm grade was out on the very last week of term, just a week before final. I mean.. Really?
This professor may sometimes feel a little bit distant, but overall he is a good teacher and knows his stuff really really well. Also, his way of teaching is super clear to me and understandable.
He was a good lecturer but did not give very many mathematical examples in class. He did however give a multitude of practice exams and quizzes before exams. Our section got curved heavily in the end. Tough assignments but let you complete them in groups.
I can't believe he has ratings above a 1.0. You won't understand any of the material taught in lecture so you'll spend hours trying to decipher the notes you took in class. He's rude, doesn't care if you fail and exams are extremely difficult (class average for midterm was 52%) Trust me this is the only review you need, DO NOT TAKE HIM.
It would be alright if he didn't make the exams so hard and if he delivered the lectures in a more engaging way.
He's not as bad as people say he is. Very tough tests though... His lectures are okay! The scaling was helpful!
Forcing everyone hand write long answer in distance education and must upload everything in pdf in 5 mins horrible test style avoid him
Why should someone include materials in a final exam that were included in less than 5% of lectures. I spent more than 30 hours studying hard, reviewing across all notes and practicing as much as I can, yet his exams had to include unfamiliar material?? Avoid this professor. I learned more from notes prepared by Pearson than i did from him.
Professor Vaney's exams are a bit tough, but not impossibly so, and it makes doing well in them satisfying. The lectures can get heavy with material, but the overall concepts aren't hard and I think professor Vaney does a good job teaching it conceptually. He's not perfect, but he's not as bad as some of the some of the comments make him out to be.
Choose other instructors for the same course and you will pass much more easily. He is not responsible for students. You have to work on your own for the most of the time. The questions for quizzes and midterms are controversial and he refused to discuss with students respectfully. What ever grade you receive, you can not argue even you are right.
Very poor slides, no notes uploaded to help students. Seems like this guy is stuck in the 1960s model of teaching involving zero feedback, old school projectors, etc. Pretty disappointing to have such primitive teaching style in 2023 in a major university 3rd year course.
Personally I found this class to be quite easy. The quizzes and final exam were not very difficult. Midterm was slightly harder than average. They key is to attend lectures (He won't post his notes), and practice from the past exams/quizzes, the assignments, and the notes from lectures. Mostly trade models with graphs, numericals and policy.
I loved taking this course! Work hard and attend classes, and you will get a good grade. Content is definitely not easy, but prof really made learning easier in lectures.
Only review you need, take this course if you are willing to study a lot in your own time, lectures are often quick and introduce material not in the textbook overall take if your good at grinding out past papers
DONT EVER TAKE THIS COURSE WITH THIS PROF IN YOUR ENTIRE LIFE. At least not in the summer. His final , quizzes , midterms etc are all calculation based and there's too many graphs. I have never rated a proff ever before this but this prof is really bad as his exams are too hard. His 2nd quiz average was barely a 50%.
Please do not take him. I have never struggled so much in an exam regardless of the subject. It was just too tough
I only took this prof because I had to make up for credit in the summer. NEVER take this man's class. If you have the choice, find an online option. None of his exams were ever based on his slides, only calculations he would spend a max of 15 minutes explaining (his lectures were 3 hours mind you). Listen to the reviews, save your grade.
Cool and laid back. If you like finance take him.
Do not take this proff!! he takes midterms + quiz + paper+final.
Biggest tip is to show up to class for this course. Prof. Vaney draws all the graphs on paper and does not post it onto Canvas, so it's up to you to attend class and take notes. He's pretty thorough explaining the graphs and concepts, and he does go through practice questions a lot in class, which are very similar to what is on the final.
Lectures are worth attending to grasp the material, but expect a heavy workload. Use unstuck ai and practice old exams to ace this course.
355 with Vaney is a hard class, but he's an extremely fair grader and gives you lots of opportunities to boost your grade. The material is complex, but if you show up to class and study, the exams are pretty manageable, as he gives you lots of practice. I definitely recommend ECON 355 if you're looking to take an upper-level economics course.
He's terrible. From dry lectures to unfinished slides which he only completes in class on paper and doesn't post. Exams are tough. The fact that he doesn't upload full notes to study is terrible. His lectures are also mind-numbing and he doesn't respond to emails. Would NEVER take him again.
355 with Vaney is a tough but rewarding class. I would recommend it to someone who is willing to study hard and attend all lectures. Exams and content are quite challenging, however, he gives lots of practice in order to prepare.
Vaney is a great person but a challenging professor. His lectures are dry, very fast-paced, and hard to understand. Study the old exams and quizzes to prepare for the midterms and finals. Don't skip lectures. Be prepared to work very hard in this course!
This guy does not care! showing up late and ending lecture early. he also wont help you if you ask him questions, which is insane
knowledgble prof, hard exams. GO TO LECTURES cuz he covers extra contents in class and never posts them on canvas.
Hilariously bad! Do not take his class. No one knows what is going on in class + he is unhelpful to students :)
Unhelpful and uncaring. I emailed him a few times and never once got a response. Perhaps his teaching style is better suited for other learners; but I struggled to pay attention to his lectures (they were extremely dry). The good: he posts old exams on Canvas, so you know what to expect on the final. The bad: literally everything else.
Very challenging prof. He uses handwritten notes of concepts vastly different from the textbook and does not post them online. Also very math heavy, but he does not teach it to you: you have to basically imply equations out of graphs/models. Heavy load of 3 written problem set assignments, 2 quizzes, and a paper on top of midterms and finals.
Whatever you do… just please DO NOT take this class. (I have never written a review for any professor in my 4 years at UBC)
Whatever you do… just please DO NOT take this class. (I have never written a review for any professor in my 4 years at UBC) does not reply to emails does not post answer keys for his practice final second quiz average was an 8/ 20
Unless you have to, don't do it! Take it from someone who is extremely optimistic and thought "how bad could it be" after reading this comments....take your tuition fees elsewhere my friend please.
THE GOAT. Don't pay attention to the fear mongering, he's a nice guy, and generous in terms of shifting weights. If you show up to class, study hard, and do the practice he provides for quizzes/midterms/final you will do well.
Yes, I agree with the person below, nice guy. But do not take ECON 355 with Vaney. Dry lectures and hard exams. Involves lots of math and algebra. Exams were very broad, so be prepared to study a lot and study hard if you decide to take this course.
Worst class I've taken at UBC. AVOID THIS CLASS IF POSSIBLE. Prof is super dry and difficult to pay attention to. Talks way too fast. If you must take this class: 1.Use TA office hours, youtube videos, and redo all notes using posted slides 2. Draw concept maps and brain dumps before exams. 3. Use practice problems sparingly. Focus on theory.
ECON 355 with Vaney is a hard but rewarding class, don't listen to the comments below, yes the class is difficult but Vaney does provide large amounts of practice questions which are similar if not in some cases the same as the ones that are on the midterms/quizzes/final. Take the class is you're willing to attend lectures and study.
He is the worst prof ever in UBC. AVOID his class. That will be best advice for you. If you have to take his course, then you better go to TA and get more things from TA. There is bunch of YouTube videos that is much better than his lecture.
I've never rated a prof or taken a class this difficult at UBC. DO NOT take this class, especially in the summer, save your grade. He breezes through material because its easy for him and provides minimal explanations and I am so lost in lectures. He claims the assignments take 30 minutes but it took me 8 HOURS!!
Gives a lot of practice + makes it clear what he expects of us. Easy to perform well, just have to do a lot of self-studying. Mandatory attendance, as he explains concepts in class that aren't in the textbook/online and refuses to post them. Not very friendly, refuses to reexplain concepts in office hours, and isn't good at explaining in lectures.
Vaney is a hard teacher, but he absolutely knows what he is doing. While his lectures can be quite dull at times, the material he provides in said lectures is extremely informative, and necessary to pass. If you're willing to work for it, a good grade is absolutely reachable.
Errors in slides. Uses a really bad textbook that doesn't explain well. Doesn't support students.
Really nice professor!
Vaney is really great. He really really understands the material, is super knowledgeable, and takes no BS - so don't try it. He's upfront. If you are confused make sure to go to his office hours, what you get out of his classes is what you put in. do NOT wait to attend office hours until it's too late. Also he doesn't respond to emails well FYI
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS (take 371 with Wagner instead). this class is so unorganized, he doesn't even know his own grading criteria. with a pre req of only 101, it's insanely difficult because his tests are nothing like the practice tests or problem sets. his slides contain no useful information which was the only reason i went to class, save urself
ECON 374 is with Vaney is a tough class but if you attend lectures and do the practice problems he provides you can easily do well as all tests are based off of what he goes over in lectures which are directly applicable to the practice problems. The class is really interesting and a good elective if you are looking to take a 300-level ECON class.
Tests are so bad and nothing is related to the practice problems
While it certainly might help to have more Economics background than 101 to take his class, overall I found the lectures very engaging/entertaining and the content straightforward. He is definitely no-BS but I overall found the content in the Quizzes to be quite fair, it was also helpful that he told the class what we could expect in the final.
