WAY easier than any other history 100 class i tried to add, but still there was a lot of work, a lot of reading. very cool, laid back professor!
Awesome teacher. Vann is laid back, up on the subject and has a great sense of humor.
Dr. V is a nice guy, very helpful and approachable, gives assignments that are usually interesting and challenging (although some of the reading is pretty tedious). He's passionate about colonialism so anybody taking his class should be forewarned. And, best of all, he's a hottie!
Professor Vann is GREAT!! His lectures were interesting, even though you have to write the entire class time. You won't get out of class early and he rarely cancels class, but it is worth going to. He doesn't take attendance, but there are surprise quizzes that he uses to see who is coming to class. I highly recommend this class!
Okay, first off. Vann is hot.On certain days, he can dress to and look good. I always thought of him as the quintessential "bachelor" on ABC. BUT! He lectures every class till two minutes passed the hour,he loves the material, but the material can get boring and he can going on..built like the high school quaterback, and smart to!
Great class. Very informative, can get side tracked easily.
he's very interested in what he does and makes the class interesting with his enthusiasm. grades harder than he should based on the tests he gives. he tests on things that you only talked about once a year ago. still. he's great.
Knowledgeable professor with a positive attitude. Tends to lecture very fast so take good notes and keep up on the reading. Hist 51 covers a lot of ground, so those who can remember details and facts will do well.
I'm biased. Dr. Vann is my favorite professor ever. His enthusiasm for the subject definitely shows in the lectures. He expects you to do the reading and will give quizzes to enforce this. He is a fast talker, so if you can't write fast, bring a tape recorder. Just go to class and do the reading...you'll be fine. Oh, BTW...he's HOT!
this class was super easy. i never bought the texts and got an excellent. this man knows what he is talking about and one of the best history teachers ever. And he is sooooo cute. Thats the main reason i went to class...
Attendance isn't mandatory, but he gives pop quizzes. Also, study guides are long and tedious and the exams aren't 1/4 the work you had to memorize! He's funny and knows the subject well.
Professor Vann is awesome! Tries his best to make history interesting to those that do not find it that way. Makes jokes here and there to keep your attention. Taking him next semester too. All around great teacher!
prof. Vann is awesome. He really knows the material and is passionate about it. He includes many colorful stories that make class even more interesting. He makes you want to go to class. If you need help on assignments he makes himself available to answer questions.
HE'S HHHOOOTTT!!! Easy going, laid back, pop quizzes but easy if ur caught up with the material. Lots of books but easy reading. two power point presentations and two 5 page papers. I wizzed right through them. Grades on a phat curve. Tries his best to make his lectures fun. YOU HAVE TO SEE AND TAKE TO BELIEVE. Oh, did I mention HE'S HOT? Take him!
Take Vann. He is an awesome teacher and he knows what he is talking about. There are a lot of books, but it is easy reading and he goes over them. lectures are easy on powerpoint. not laptop friendly (need to ask). easy grader and easy teacher.
Great teacher, likes to lecture but keeps it interesting! Lots of reading. I really enjoyed the class and learned a lot. Good resource for future teachers.
Professor Vann is wonderful, and I would recommend taking any class you can from him. His specialty is French Colonialism in Vietnam, but he's intelligent across the board. A lot of work is assigned, but he doesn't grade too strictly. He incorporates a lot of assignments that WILL help you in other history classes.
This is by far the best history teacher that I have ever had. I learned so much from him, the way he presents information makes it easy to remember. I didn't do much of the assigned reading but still managed an A because I went to almost every class and took notes. I actually didn't want this class to end! I HIGHLY recommend Professor Vann!!
This professor is as smart as he is hot. I will be taking him next semester because I really dug his lectures. The tests weren't crazy hard, but you definitely do have to keep up or it would be darn near impossible.
boring as hell.. but i still got an A.. ;) he looks like jim carrey but his jokes arent funny.. i almost always fall asleep. alot of readings..
I've taken a few of his classes and he's very knowlegable in the various subjects that he teaches. Great sense of humor. Don't plan on texting in class because he will call u out.i just don't get why people are so rude in lecture now a days, having conversations, texting and looking at things on their computer distracting people around them. Give the professor some respect, or stay home! Overall I think he is a great teacher, and he keeps his lectures interesting.
He gives 1 type of exam which includes a small percent of students who think that way. Not helpful when students asked for help after the 1st exam-c avg for the class. He doesn't give a crap if you succeed or else he would take the time to write a more inclusive learning style exam. I guess all that matters is his format works best for HIM. I have learned allot from him, but I cannot demonstrate that with his exams which are the only way 2 earn points except 4 the rare 8pt xtrcrdt opportunities.
Great professor, very clear in his instructions and expectations. Use of the reading was the focus of HIST 100 so be sure to read. He is also VERY helpful, especially when helping conduct research for the final research project. He seriously knows his stuff. Take his class!
I really enjoyed Dr.Vanns history class-best history course I have ever taken! I learned alot of interesting and valueable information, while laughing all at the same time. The tests aren't that difficult as long as you take notes you should get an A.
The 2 people below me were in my class and obviously didn't get a good grade. I liked that he actually challenged us and the 4 tests that he gave in the class was basically the same type of format all history professors give. I ended up with an A in the class but that was because I didn't try to skate threw like some other people in my class.
Great Class. 2 papers and 3 exams. If you go to class you wont need to read the books, but you will need to reference them to study for tests. Gives a good study guide for exams. Went to class every day but didnt read and got an A.
He has a wonderful personality. He told a lot of funny stories. He is very knowledgeable about the subject. His lectures are clear. There is a lot of reading though. Keep up with the readings and you should do fine.
He is a wonderful prof! He's very accommodating an always has a story to tell from one of his many adventures.READ YOUR BOOKS!! He will use them! Overall a good proff and he's not too bad on the eyes.
Dr.Vann is by far the best professor I have had so far! He is very enthusiastic, and that makes for an interesting lecture. His tests are different, but I found them to be extremely straightforward. He's also easy on the eyes, so you can't help but pay attention during lecture :)
AWESOME PROFESSOR!@!@! Dr. Vann is beyond the best history professor i have even taken. Is he easy? no. But should everyone be able to pass his classes? yes. Lots of funny stories and jokes. Good amount of extra credit, so everyone should pass. Must read the books however, and keep up. Mandatory attendance. 3 exams (including final) 1 essay.
Vann is a quality professor! He makes lectures enjoyable, but does have a tendency to talk fast. There are 3 cumulative tests, and he provides in-depth study guides. 2 papers are also required. I would highly recommend him to anyone wanting to take a history class!
I loved this class! Definitely had to work hard on the papers, but never bought the book and got a B+. He has great lectures, and I went to every class even though it wasn't mandatory. Take this professor!
His test are all cumulative, and study guides are long but he randomly chooses what to test on. Lectures are boring, talks about surfing a lot, does not appreciate student walking in late and will call them out. Lots of books and reading. I would personally never take another one of his classes
He keeps lectures interesting but and gives a moderate amount of reading. The study guide he gives you for his exams are a must. FOLLOW THE STUDY GUIDE!!! His class is based only on exams and each have only a little extra credit on each. I got away with not reading, but went to lecture and studied that study guide for a week then you should be good
Course grade based on tests, and tests are very easy. Almost entirely lecture based and his lectures are good. Very thorough and helpful.
Excellent professor. There are 4 exams (last two exams are accumulative). He gives a long study guide and make sure to study everything on it. His exams are identification (essays) and reverse IDs (terms). He is a very cool professor and really cares about his students. Just study and you will get an A in his class.
Vann is a cool teacher. He's pretty laid back and he's an awesome lecturer. You will learn a lot in this class. He's a fair grader and very lenient on essays. tests are not bad but you do have to study for them.
Dr. Vann is THE best professor. He's masterful at what he does. His lectures are never boring. Even if you do not care for history, his lectures will draw you in and make you learn. His exams are easy and short. I don't think anyone could fail his class. You just can't say anything negative about him. Anyone will love him.
Vann is one of the best history professors at SS. He is helpful knowledgable and keeps lectures interesting and fun. He's cool and really cheerful easy going guy. GO to study sessions and you'll easily get an A. 4 exams, cumulative and they mirror each other. He makes history interesting and fun. I would definitely take again if I could
Vann is the mann! lol he is awesome to say the least CSUS is lucky to him Makes our long 3 hr monday night lectures interesting and funny. He is willing to help so GO TO OFFICE HOURS if needed 4 tests last 3 cumulative that make up your grade GO TO STUDY SESSIONS its basically like getting an automatic no other professor is as helpful
I took Prof. Vann's Hist. 50 one day per week, and it was kinda tough having to cram multiple topics in a day. There's 3 exams and no FINAL exam; the exams are cumulative. It's always best to go to each study session because the TA provides critical and helpful information. Also I thought that he and his TA was very generous when grading the exams.
Your grade is based only on tests. The tests consist of only fill in the blank (without a word bank), identifications of terms, and an essay. You really have to know the material if you want to pass but study guides provide a list of terms that could end up on the test. Do not take if you are lazy.
I never read the chapters, but studied the study guide and took good notes. Study the terms on the study guide. Then, look for primary sources that match the terms on the study guide. Once you know the terms and have a primary source for them, you'll be very successful. Moreover, his tests are cumulative. You must review previous tests.
As a professor he was okay. Has a lot of experience traveling world wide and incorporates that into his teaching. However, class consists of three tests and that is it so in order to do well in the class you have to do well on the tests. The tests are all fill in the blank and define terms. Very difficult if you don't know the content.
Lecture and note-taking are the primary ways he instructs and as long as you take copious notes and study them before an exam you should be fine. His lectures were well thought out and he is an amazing story-teller. I would take his class again in a heartbeat and he also inspired me to take his HIST 149: History of Southeast Asia.
The easiest online course I've ever taken.
I definitely recommend his his online class, it was very straight forward and simple. Two simple short essays, and homework was a breeze. Tedious, but an easy A, trust me.
There are 2 chapters to read (through smart book) and 2 geography exercises each week. There are 2 short papers and 3-4 tests. All are easy. The content is extremely difficult but if you just google everything i don't see how someone could get a grade lower than an A.
Homework ranges from 1-3 chapters per week, 2 essays on topics from both the e-book and the class book, 4 tests plus a final. Homework is easy, tests are easy if you know what to look for. Not a bad class unless you forget to turn things in.
Simple class. Weekly connect assignments due on Thursdays and Fridays. Its about 10-20 questions but you can keep checking your answers until you get them correct. 2 essays from the second textbook. And four exams. 1 midterm and 1 final. Very nice guy and will regularly email the class to remind about upcoming assignments.
Professor Vann made this class the best summer course I've taken. The homework was a little tedious and there was a lot to do each week but it was the most effective form of learning for me. Vann sends regular emails to the class to make sure we keep up with our work and sets you up for success throughout the whole course.
This teacher is so sweet - he actually cares about you and your grade even if you're taking the online class. He is quick to grade papers and checks in with you frequently through email. I've never met him in person but I feel like I should go give him a hug. I'd definitely take this class again - also get the book! You NEED it for the essays!
Each week there are McGraw Hill and geography assignments. You can even click "check your answers" on the geography assignments with no mark down. 5 online exams and 2 essays. Need the textbooks for the essays. He grades them quickly and gives great feedback. Really easy to pass with an A. I only read for the essays.
Easy A class. Chapter assignments and geography quizzes are super easy. You can finish the all chapter assignments in like a week besides the geography quizzes. Exams are easy because everything is on google. Essays are the hard part of this class since it's 50% of your entire grade. Just use three evidence and cite your sources for the essays.
He is so caring and nice, always sends out emails of new assignments and they're due dates. Reply's to emails within 24 hours. The class consists of weekly assignments, four tests, one final and 2 essays. The essay are huge part of your grade. They're not hard. If you read the chapter and construct a good thesis, you'll be fine.
weekly 60 ish question assignments but you redo until you get 100% 2 papers no final or midterm exam no weekly lectures EASY A!!! i recommend to EVERYONE
As expected of an online course, you will have to learn everything on your own. However, the professor was very accessible and quick with his emails. He is also very understanding if you couldn't get an assignment in on time. 2 chapter reading practices and 2 hw assignments are due every week--easy peasy. Just do your work on time and you'll pass.
This class is an easy A. Lots of busy work but it is manageable. 2 essays worth 50% of your grade combined. HE gives lots of extra credit. very lenient as well. I missed an exam and he let me make it up. take him
History is my worst subject and I'm a bit of a procrastinator, but this class really was no big deal at all. Every day you typically have two chapter readings (that take some time to do) and geography assignments with each chapter which were super easy. Follow the rubric for the essays and you'll get a good grade. He sends out reminders as well :)
Easiest online class ever! Many online classes are unorganized, but he made it very easy to understand what was due and what he expected. There are weekly assignments due, but fairly easy. 4 exams, 1 final, and 2 essays.
I don't really know him because never met him. Based on his online class, very poor organization of the class system. Although the quizzes can be found online, it's too much time consuming and it's only worth 10% of your grade which is really stupid. 2 essays are worth 50% of your grade, very unfair grading when it comes to the paper. Try to avoid.
Way too much homework for this kind of class.
The work load may seem like a lot, but this professor wants his students to succeed. I forgot to take the last exam, so I emailed him and he kindly reopened the exam for me! He super easy to approach online and gives helpful feedbacks for essays. Google and quilt will be your best friend, but it only makes the class 10x easier ;)
Incredibly opaque with assignment directions--He'll say something and judge by another set of rules. The class is incredibly easy but dealing with him was by far the greatest challenge. Always gave a very strong impression that questions were a huge inconvenience for him, which is funny, as his teaching style practically demands questions.
I took the online summer class, super easy online A, just do your work on time to get the full points. You have to buy the online book and do weekly assignments on there. You can get 100% on all the assignments if you complete them. Professor is nice and replies to emails very fast.
This class was a pretty easy A. I took the 6 week summer class and we had online assignments each week and then a test on Friday. The homework are just busy work but 100% guaranteed. You have to write 2 essays that are very in depth prompts so it might take a while but you get a week to write them. The exams were easy because the answers are online
Dr. Vann teaches a really interesting class and his grading is not nitpicky. You have to watch the lectures to pass the course though. He is super passionate about this class and it's been one of my favorite classes so far.
Took his summer course and it was quite rigorous. I wouldnt necessarily say it was an easy A but if you do the work youll get an A. We had chapter readings, geography exercises, and an exam every week. Also 2 papers and a final exam. The papers werent too bad, just follow his directions. I was able to get an A even with the 6 weeks we had.
required a lot of reading but only have 3 assignments. We have 3 essays due that were 100 points. Wasnt too harsh on grading either if you put in effort
I read the book but still failed exams. Personally I think the exams are also too tough. I wouldnt recommend this class to anyone.
Great professor. Only thing is there is a whole lot of reading to do. Few exams throughout the semester with a final exam. But the essay is what really matters. If you do good on the essays, then you should be fine if you keep up with the weekly assignments.
If you want a class where you can half-ass the work, this ain't it. There are a few tests and essays that require tons of reading and attention to lectures. There is no homework, just make sure to keep up with all the readings. Professor is awesome! He really makes each lecture interesting! Get ready for dad jokes. Side note: lectures are long.
This class was utterly boring. There was no engagement with the professor, nothing but reading and answering questions off of a smart book. I am a A+ student and History is my major and my passion. I felt disengaged and was delighted my transcripts had accepted this class already so I was able to drop it.
Professor Vann is the coolest professor I've ever had. His lectures were so interesting but if you are not interested in history, they could feel long. Watch lectures or you won't pass the class. Not an easy A but it's fun and worth it.
Class was online, there way a lot of homework. but it was mostly just busyworks and was not that difficult. The important assignments of this class were the essays (2), they're not super hard. But they are worth 50% of your grade so if you don't do well on these then you'll fail. Exams were also a bit difficult.
He is a tough grader. His exams and quizzes does not really connect with the homework. He does not answer emails. If you take this class good luck.
Very annoying Professor. Grades citations like his life depends on it. Easy class besides his insane essay grading. Not having to interact with this professor was a plus.
I* took this class online and Asynchronous* Pretty easy class, just very time consuming. Never really read the book until I had to write the essays. Put in effort on the essays because they are 50% of your grade. Exams can be hard so I recommend making a discord with your classmates.
You hardly interact with Professor Vann unless you need something mandatory. It's a fairly easy course filled with a lot of assignments and exams so prepare to plan these things out. There's also a lot of reading to be done as well. If you're not into online courses like this one, dont take it. Otherwise, this class is a free pass.
If you're good at writing in Chicago style, you should be at least decent at the essays. He doesn't reply to emails, and expect him to move the goal post in terms of grading those essays. The classwork itself is easy, but the essays being 50% of the grade can drag you down immensely.
Vann was an amazing professor! He responses to emails in a timely manner and was helpful when issues arose. There are many assignments, but they are not that difficult just very time consuming. The essays are a great portion of your grade and are required to be written in Chicago format.
He assigns 4 things that are due by 5 pm every Friday with 25 to 30 questions each taking about an hour to complete. He takes his essays very seriously Chicago style for both essays. TA will also help him grade essays. Exams and quizzes are ok but you need to read a lot to get a good grade. If you dislike reading then this class is not for you
The professor decided to make the class hybrid and made one class day of the week designated for ready and the other for group discussion. The assignments were clear and easy to locate information.
By far one of the most unpleasant experiences. For the essays, we were expected to use Chicago-style which none of us had ever been taught how to do; when we messaged the professor for help his responses were very unhelpful and made us question if the professor was a sadist or densely ignorant. The last 3 assignments were 50% in the last 2 weeks.
Heavy workload, weekly homework is alot sometimes. The exams are 50 questions and sometimes a drag. Essays have to be done in chcao style or your grade goes. Overall not a hard class if you stay on top of the work. Professor is also easy to reach out to and will answer any questions.
I took his online in Fall 2023. He's an amazing professor and he gives you a breakdown of how he would grade your essays. If your essay meets that criteria, you will receive full marks. This class had a lot of reading assignments, but everything else was pretty straightforward.
Professor Vann makes it difficult to be an online student. There is a gluttony of work, lack of access to puts you on his schedule. This class includes 5 chapters a week, accessible Monday through Friday, with all assignments arbitrarily due at 5pm on Fridays. If you are a not a History major, do not take this class.
I had him for both History 50 and 51 over the summer and it was pretty chill. Mostly McGraw Hill homework and tests, two essays over six weeks. As long as you meet criteria for the essays I don't think he grades harshly.
