Philosophy can be ROUGH. Prof. V. kept it interesting and was very fair.
Very good teacher and nice guy. Everyone has to take Philosophy, so take it with Ventimiglia if at all possible, you won't regret it. Alot easier than other teachers.
Very interesting, very approachable and understandable.
he is an unbelievable teacher, makes things interesting and easy to understand. you actually want to learn things with this guy. for tests, you gotta study
If you have to take philosophy, he's the one to take.
what they said...

If you need to take philsophy i would still take MIxie. I took Ventimigila for medical ethics which is a harder class. gives weekly readings and quizzes the next class. easy class if you do the work. he's very understanding with any problems or cocerns
For Med Ethics he makes it very interesting. All nurses have to take either med ethics or bioethics with stiltner. I've taken both. I prefer Ventimiglia.
Great teacher, Passionate about his subject matter, Great class if you like discussions
Dr. Ventimiglia is one of the best professors I had while attending SHU. I took a couple of classes with him and leanred a lot from both. He's enthusiastic about the subject matter and makes the classes very enjoyable.
I had a couple of classes with him and both were intesting
If you're a math-minded person, or a CS major (as was one of my classmates), this class will be a snap. Otherwise, make sure you study, study, study. The exercises in the text are extremely helpful, especially when done several times each as preparation for the quizzes and tests.
One of the best teachers at SHU. Makes the class extremely interesting and easy to understand. There's a 1-2 page reflection paper due every week and a paper at the end of every book finished which scares some people off but it's really not bad. Take him!!
If I didn't have him, I would have probably failed. He keeps things interesting and relates it to everyday things. He is overall a great teacher. Quizzes every class on what you read but he grades fairly. You have to do the reading though.
This teacher knows his stuff, but the subject matter in Logic is very difficult. Weekly reading quizzes. Nice guy, gives a light curve on grades, but if you want an easy class, don't take Logic.
not an easy teacher. I was mistaken by all of the great comments he received on this website. I am a good student and received an almost failing grade on the midterm. other people i know in his ph101 class got in the 50's. Weekly quizzes and reading, keeps you the entire 2 1/2hr class. I heard Mixie is an easy prof if thats what you are looking for
I too was mistaken by the great comments that he received. He makes the material pretty easy to understand. However, with midterm and final exam, I thought I did extremely well since I knew and throughly understood the material. My GPA took a serious hit because of this class. And I came into the semester with a 3.8...Look for other options!
He is funny and relates everything to everyday life and things you would know, such as sports. He's very interesting and although his class is challenging, he gives great notes and makes it easy to understand.
I would agree that Professor V. is friendly and his teaching style is engaging but the course was nothing but 15 weeks of him on his soapbox ranting about Bush, the Iraq War, global warming, gay marriage, etc. I didn?t learn any Logic but did learn plenty about his personal views. Also, if you have an opinion different than his, leave it at home.
Awesome teacher. I'm Econ and honestly thought about minoring because of him. He likes participation, but "call you out" if your argument is flawed. Got feeling he is a naturally tough grader, but lowered standard cuz it was an intro class. He can be tough though. Reading required, quiz if he thinks you're arn't reading. Wish i could take him again
He's a good teacher, except for the fact that all you do is spend the entire class writing notes You only have 2 papers and 2 tests the whole semester, so if you screw one test or paper up, your grade will be affected. He also chooses his favorites in the class.
Very difficult class, definitely need to study. But he is an excellent professor.
Dr. Ventimiglia is a great professor. He really works with every student to make sure that they understand the material. Some of the readings are pretty hard, but he always goes over them in every class.
He is amazing. Do the reading. This is the kind of professor you actually respect and want him to think highly of you. I had him for American philosophy, the material is challenging but he helps you get through it
Professor V is a BOSS. Everyone seems to fail Art of Thinking and hate it and I didn't understand why. He makes material so easy to understanding and I strongly suggest office hours just to talk with him or to gain a better understanding on material. Do homework he assigns. He also curves every test. Definitely take him
MY FAVORITE TEACHER AT SHU. Never have i ever had a professor care so much about a student and he gives his all in helping you pass this difficult class. For art of thinking theres not a better teacher than him.
He's a great professor but honestly the class is stupid. FLO125 will not help you with anything even though the school swears by it.
His teaching style is a roller coaster. Started off with an A, dropped to a C+, ended off with a B+. Uses football as an example a lot so if you don't know much about guy sports, you probably won't understand what's going on. He came up with Art of Thinking at SHU so be prepared to learn more than others. If you keep up the hard work, you're fine
Dr. V is great. Not sure what the others might say, but his class is actually simpler than other sections. You don't only learn/use 6 rules for induction for example while other sections learn 20. Dr. V is super chill, teaches in a clear manner. And although you may not be familiar with his football analogies, they're really easy to get. Take him!
Ventimiglia is probably my favorite teacher so far. Great lectures and really makes you think outside the box. Many of you hate taking philosophy and i thought the same going into this course, but trust, he is the man. Take his class if you're required to take philosophy for you major. No homework except for short readings, 2 essays that are easy.
I love Professor V!! He is very understanding and helpful! He does not want to see you fail!!! Everyone told me how hard Art of Thinking was going to be, but here I am getting 100's on all the tests! He does give weekly or biweekly quizzes which are annoying but not too bad! He assigns homework, but never checks it.. the answer key is on blackboard
Very easy professor. Just need to do your work outside of class and pay attention during the lectures and you will do just fine on the in class quizzes and assignments
Take this online if you can!!!! so much easier, you can do the hw on your own time, complete weekly assignments at your own pace, and the tests are exactly what you learned. I felt like I was able to better understand the material for the class because it was online.
Dr. V is a very good professor and he gives engaging lectures, however, I found his quizzes to be difficult for Critical Thinking. When talking to other students with different professors they said the class was a breeze, but I felt that I really had to work for my grade. Overall, he was a great and smart professor, but a hard grader
Professor Ventimiglia is a very nice person but not a great teacher. His tests and quizzes are much harder than the work we do in class and you really need to work for your grade. He also is not very understanding and I know many other students felt the same way. Definitely would NOT take him again.
Great teacher. Gives you plenty of opportunities to do well in the course. Lectures are abit heavy in material, and sometimes can get lost, but his course is graded from two tests, two papers, and a presentation so not much to do weekly for this class. take him!
Dr. V is an amusing professor. As long you do the work, whos is a lot. Youll do fine
I took Critical Thinking as a blended course so the class met once a week. Online textbook activity and writing assignments based on the chapter due every week and he'd go over everything in class. CTL is a difficult course but splitting it up this way helped me understand and do well. Easy grader and approachable. 1 quiz, midterm, and final.
This professor gives slim chance for success. Very test heavy that includes impossible to find information and doesn't give good feedback as to what you did wrong. Very nice guy but I wish there was more classwork opportunities to bring your grade up since your grade is passed on all quizzes.
Dr. V is the best prof I have ever taken. Philosophy is not an interesting subject, but he makes it very interesting and is passionate about what he teaches. As long as you watch the videos and listen in class, it is very easy to pass. Some of the reading is confusing but he always clarifies it.
Extremely hard. He doesn't help when ask. Weekly quizzes are extremely difficult. When asked for help he basically said I wasn't supposed to understand and that it takes years to understand this material.
Do not take this as a philosophy elective unless you want to do the work for a 400 level philosophy class. 2hrs+ of reading a week. Not easy to receive help outside of class, and when I did it was rather vague and didn't help much. "read slower" is his go-to help.
If you are not a Philosophy or Political Science major, do not take him. Feels like a 400-level course.
Amazing professor. The class was difficult, but made the topics understandable during the lectures. Very interesting and impactful.
Somewhat difficult class with reading(s)/reading quiz and a recorded asynchronous lecture to do before class (we had one class per week). Lectures were more interesting than most and relevant to today, which helped. Final essay, test, and project were somewhat tedious but not impossible. Class lectures usually clarified readings, which helped
I took the Social and political Philosophy course. The reading was definitely challenging and I've heard a lot of complaints about it, but Professor V. walks you through it. There are quizzes every week, which isn't too bad, but there's usually a question that was said in class, so if you miss class you might miss out.
Very nice guy, just wouldnt recommend if youre not a philosophy major. Quizzes are way harder than class and must be done in 8-20 mins.
Gave really great examples to clearly explain ideas of such a boring topic, but he made it interesting. Not tough work as long as you watch the recorded lectures and analyses of the readings that he posts.
I took his class online, he seemed really nice as a person but the class was boring. gave an assessment every week and was a very fair grader. I liked him because he gave very clear expectations and instructions.
I took this class as a late spring course. Super easy, every class he records lectures followed by quiz or 2 to make sure you watch/understood. Super nice guy, explained the class with ease as it sounds like a complicated class. Just take super complex notes and you'll be fine.
TAKE THIS CLASS! Was never a fam of philosophy but looked forward to his lectures each week. Need to buy the textbook as there are readings from it each week on top of recorded video lectures. Quiz at the end of each unit and it's straight from the videos and readings. Select to write a paper for the midterm or write a paper during finals week.
He is a very nice professor but very lecture and work-heavy, took him for an online philosophy course. Very responsive and gives good feedback, genuinely wants the best for his students.
I took this class for an easy A for philosophy foundational core. This class is extremely hard and lecture heavy. The quizzes are on small little things he says in his videos and nothing can be found online. You have to write down every small thing he says unless you're not going to know the answers on the quizzes. Dont take this class
Quiz every week, there are 2 or 3 videos to watch before each quiz and usually a reading assignment to go with it. The quizzes are easy as long as you pay attention and take notes during the videos and reading. The quiz is timed usually 10 or 20 minutes. The mid-term and final are about 100 questions but 75 minutes long.
Fantastic professor, knows what he's talking about and is clearly interested and loves his subject. Cares a lot about the students and is very helpful in terms of questions on papers and tests, but the material can get complicated and the assignments difficult. Just pay attention and you'll be fine.
TAKE THIS CLASS!! I didn't think I would be into politics until this class. He's super nice and knows a lot about the subject and what makes it easy and interesting is how he explains it in everyday examples so its easier to understand. As long as you pay attention you should be fine!
This professor really cares about how you are doing in the class. The class is a lot of work since it was a blended course however, I feel like I really took a lot from this course and was able to understand it when I applied myself.
Take this professor! I am not interesting in philosophy or politics in any way but this professor made the class content so interesting and engaging. His exams were fair and allowed the student to show that they understood the material it was not nitpicky. Take this professor, he's awesome.
Awesome guy. Available for extra help whenever you need. Passionate about what he teaches. Truly wants students to get something out of the class. 2 exams, one paper, and weekly quizzes. Fairly easy as long as you do the work and keep up. class only meets once a week so pay attention while in class. really cool dude with a lot to offer his students
GOAT. He is super cool and makes class very interesting. Take him for sure, especially if you are not a phil/poli major. Makes everything easy to understand.
Professor V. is a great professor! Although the class itself was extremely difficult, Professor V is very educated and passionate about political philosophy. He truly tries his best to help us understand and wants to see us succeed. He's super nice a funny too.
It is obvious he is passionate about his work and what he teaches. He truly wants his students to get something out of this class. There are 2 exams, one paper, and weekly quizzes due at the end of the week. There are usually a lot of lessons each week and the lectures are very detailed so you have to pay attention and write notes as he goes.
He is a wonderful professor. The content of the class could be difficult for some and since it is asynchronous you have a lot more work outside of class(weekly quizzes on previous lecture, posted lectures, and readings). He is willing to help you, he explains things in simple terms, and you can tell he genuinely cares about his students.
He is such an amazing professor. He explains everything so well and helps you to understand really tough readings. He made philosophy so interesting. If you have the opportunity to absolutely take him!!
I would not recommend this professor if you are just taking a philosophy course for a requirement. I had a high A all semester. Then I did not do as well on the final but still passed. It dropped my grade about 10 points so make sure to really study for the final it is much harder than the rest. Homework graded on correctness.
Dr. Ventimiglia consistently delivers engaging lectures devoid of irrelevant content, and he makes concepts simple to comprehend. Be prepared for weekly quizzes, readings (5-20pgs), and lectures. You will be tested on specific details from the readings and lectures. Tests (including essays) are done ON PAPER in a blue book. He is genuine.
pretty straight foward class, prof is cool and lectures arent hard but you HAVE to take notes the whole time and focus. If you put the work in, youll do good
Do not take him if you don't want to watch MULTIPLE 40 minute videos for the lessons as a online class Quizzes are timed at 10 minutes for legit 1 minute a question so you can barely even think and also relate to himself in videos not even the concept half the time doesn't belive in extra credit whatever that means just don't.
Prof. V is a great guy and an even better professor. You can tell her really cares about communicating his point to every student. He finds a way to engage in the discussion as an equal rather than an "all knowing" participant. If you care about the work, he will reward your effort, and he's a very fair grader.
I LOVED HIM. I never thought a political philosophy class would be so interesting and engaging, but that's what he makes it. He is very passionate about what he does. There are lectures, readings, and a quiz every week that can be time consuming, but if you take notes and put in the work you'll be fine, because you can't search up the answers
2-3 lecture videos with timed quiz every week but you need to take extra careful notes and write down every single thing he says even examples or references because that is what he will ask on the quizzes. Super specific but if you take good notes you will be perfectly fine. Some textbook quoting and citing but not much. I would take again though.
I took him for a winter course; every day was a quiz with an exam at the end of each week. This course is straightforward to understand as long as you watch the videos and write down the comparisons and analogies he makes because he will put them on the quizzes. Just block off two or three hours a day, and you should be able to get an easy A.
DON'T take this teacher. This class is based off of timed test every week and also there are three thirty minute videos you have to watch before taking the test. Most of the test questions aren't even in the videos. I don't recommend this class unless you want to drop your GPA.
Wouldn't take this Professor again.
He was a great professor who really sparked my interest in philosophy. I always looked forward to his class because of how engaging and interesting he is, and I really liked the sarcastic humor he uses during his lectures. I definitely recommend taking his courses, he's a great guy and really knowledgeable about a lot.
Please do not take this class. There are weekly assessments that are timed 10 min based off of multiple 30 minute lecture videos and most of the questions are about very small details he says in the videos. Basically impossible and way too stressful for an online class. I had to withdraw because I probably would've gotten a C.
This class gave me a new perspective on politics.Ventimiglia really wants his students to embrace the lessons from his class. Grade is based on weekly quizzes, two exams, and a short paper. TAKE NOTE OF LITTLE DETAILS in his online and in person lectures, he'll ask about them in the quizzes. Very cool guy and would take him again.
Coming from a nursing major, I was so afraid to take this class, but it is easy and Dr. V made every class a joy to come to. He made every lesson so understandable(a 5 year old could understand politics from it). The work and quizzes are so easy, the people complaining are lazy and take 0 notes. You will leave this class actually learning something
I put in a lot of effort and paid attention and took notes but I still did not score great on quizzes. Quiz questions can be very specific things he says in lecture so if you don't write that down, you automatically lose a point. Took out more time to do his work than my fully online course. If you have a hard major, I would avoid this class.
i don't know how he has so many reviews actually one of the worst classes i've ever taken so much material and you only have 7-10 minutes to take every quiz. also takes FOREVER. to grade anything. prob wouldn't have taken it if i had known so WARNING
He actually made politics interesting, the people giving him below a 5 are lazy and don't want to put the work in. I will admit, the workload was a lot but it was very easy and I would score 100/100 on each assessment that was given each week. The course was blended, thats why it was so much work. Come to class, take good notes, and you'll be good.
As a nursing major with a hard courseload, this professor is great. I genuinely was interested in the class, and I learned a lot about politics and philosophy. Weekly quizzes are easy if you uh.. pay attention? Easy grader on tests and papers, too! Take this class, it is so fun and interesting! It is important to take notes in every class!!
Definitely recommend! I took this course to blow a foundational out of the way but Dr. V really helped me understand the workings of political philosophy. The weekly online quizzes did stress me out as they are timed and sometimes specific from the online lectures but overall they're manageable and the exams are also straightforward.
First fully virtual course at SHU, made me realize I can manage it. Weekly readings and videos take 1-2 hours, just put it in 2x speed. Accessible and responds to emails very quickly. You can't make up quizzes, so stay on top of due dates. Very kind and wise professor. Quizzes are once a week, 10-15 questions, multiple-choice, and HYPER-specific.
I took his class online, but honestly, it was not horrible at all. It was very time-consuming, but if you pay attention to the videos and take notes, it is a very simple class. I also found it somewhat interesting. He is a nice guy but his grading is a little tough but nothing crazy. Philosophy can be a horrible class, I think this was enjoyable.
I took Dr. V's Conservatism class and genuinely it was one of the best decisions I made at SHU! Don't get me wrong the class is tough, but he makes it so understandable and it helps how student operated and discussion based his classes are that everyone is helping each other learn. If you want to become an expert in a subject take his class! 11/10!
This guy rocks seriously. When you're taking some of his harder classes, the more work you put in, the more he is able to help.
Every week, he had timed quizzes. The questions were very specific!
Dr. V is awesome!! I loved his class and thought it was super interesting. His lectures are great. Timed quizzes once a week but as long as you pay attention to the lectures and put in a little bit of effort you'll be fine. Midterm and final are easy. I recommend him 100%!
He overcomplicated simple explanations of the course that were way too confusing on an easy topic. Everyone in the class thought the same. confused on more then when we walked in
He is ok. He overcomplicated stuff, Weekly quizzes. If you are confused about his work, he will accuse you of cheating even though you may not. I would not even use AI because the questions are so specific; do not waste your time on that. He is a smart man and encourages his students to be smart. Learned a lot from him, but he stressed me out.
Ridiculously hard for an online class, I went to his office hours and asked for feedback, he still gave me low grades. Not very willing to work with you.
hard for an online class. Took this as a gpa booster definitely wasn't. Should't have more added stress as a nursing major but here we are
definitely hard for an online class. 2 hours worth of videos every week. As a nursing major thought this was going to be for a gpa boost, definitely isn't.
This class was so frustrating and disorganized. This class requires you to watch long videos, and then take weekly quizzes on it. The questions were highly specific. On top of that, Dr. V's slides don't actually help with understanding the material since they're literally just images (pictures of Peter from Family Guy) instead of real content.
I really loved this class, however, if you take it hybrid, there is a weekly quiz you take at home corresponding with online and inclass lectures. These quizzes are difficult to do well on. Only one paper and two exams. Overall, great class.
