I had Professor Victorine for calc 1, 2, and 3. He was honestly the best teacher I've ever had at nova. Ask questions if you get lost, do the homework, try the problems on the past exams that he posts on BB. Take good notes and pay more attention to the examples he does in class than the problems in the book as that's what you'll be tested on.
There are people here complaining that the professor was trying to show off or something by doing an example really fast... My mind is literally blown. Boom. You mean to tell me that you were focused on whether he was trying to show off to you during a math class lecture, when he's supposed to be doing exactly what you described him to be doing...?
He is a great professor if you know math. He is very quick with teaching his materials. You must attend class to know what he is going to put on the exams. Also he is probably one of the strictest graders I have ever come across, he will mark the whole entire answer wrong if you get one tiny thing wrong. His hw in ALEKS didn't correlate in class.
Professor Victorine is a great teacher. Ask a lot of questions he likes that the more you ask the better. He does go a little fast but always before class starts he does ask if you have questions and he will answer those questions. Do your homework quizzes for the points and work on the sample test that he post and do your homework and you pass
I took Mth154 with this professor then dropped the class because he wasnt willing to teach anything in class unless someone had a question or a problem with the assignment. It was more like an ELI course.
Felt like this was more of a high school calculus class then college level class. Felt like homework was still easy and the exams were a joke. I will probably re-take with another prof but not at Loudoun. I heard it's better to take Calc. at the MA campus.
Professor Victorine is awesome! Overall, he REALLY knows what he's talking about and is super willing to help in and out of class. As much as I liked him as a professor, he is VERY hard! He doesn't make study guides, its more of just expected that you know what you're doing. if you want to do well in his class, make sure you study a ton!!
dont take his courses if you are not good with math. he makes test questions difficult to understand and he makes you do ALEKS as homework but it dosent even correlate to what is being taught in class.
I did not understand any of his lectures. It was confusing how he solved problems and I rarely got the chance to attempt topics during class. I only solved problems on ALEKS (an online homework program); however, it was very time consuming and at times frustrating to work on. Although, his exams were reasonable and the grading criteria was fair.
Professor Victorine is really nice because he responds to your email in a timely manner. Also, as long as you are actively trying in the class and completing the assignments on time you will get a good grade in this class.
I took him for Calc 2 and overall he is a great professor, some of the material were tough but if you understand the material you should be fine.
This professor gives only midterm and final, so if u fail those u are done. Don't take him, he repeated a few times in class: "They pay me here to solve puzzles (integrals), I don't care if you guys fail". He is just overall a bad person, he knows math pretty well but is terrible at explaining it. For hw, he just said do them all.
If you taking this class, the good new is that you don't have homework and you don't need to go to class every time , because he doesn't care if you come or not. The bad new is that you need to teach yourself to learn every things for this class.
Math is a hard topic already. I see some people blame their failures on professors.I took this course after being 10 years away from school. I studied A LOT! if you do your part Professor Victorine is really willing to help you. You can ask questions at the begining of every single class. some classes he spent the whole time on answering questions!
One of my favorite classes ever and I dont particularly like math. Victorine is great, not only because he is knowledgeable, but because of his no-nonsense attitude and humor. You have to put in work in order to do well in this course. If you do the hw, go to lecture, and participate, this class is great. Very fair grader. Loves questions.
He just writes on the board at 80 mph as if he's talking to a room of mathematicians. Makes things way too complicated, I feel like half the Calc 1 class so far has been "Check this out, you'll learn this in Calc 5" or "This is so hard I would never put this on my tests." Then the class ends 1 hour early. Like dude I need to learn Calc 1.
Michael Victorine is an overall decent professor. Hes incredibly good at math, and can answer pretty much any question you throw at him with relative ease and clear demonstration. He genuinely seems like he enjoys teaching. Calculus is still a tough subject, so dont expect an easy A. Tests count for all of your grade, so make sure to study.
He only has the final and the midterm with no opportunities for extra credit opportunities. He doesn't give breaks in his lectures which are almost 3 hours long, and he doesn't explain his material well expecting everyone to already know anything.
I was very relieved with the first 3/4 of this class. I took a 8 week online course and I was able to get the work done on schedule. I struggled with the last exam units and had to use NOVA's tutor's a few times. He did not respond to my messages but keep up with the assignments and use the online tutors if needed and you should do well.
Victorine cancelled classes on us frequently(even the first week) and was unprepared when Covid19 closed down campuses after spring break while my other professors easily went to zoom. 2 weeks after break and he has yet to have an online lecture, post content, or even grade our first exams. Our learning software ALEKS felt like my real professor
After NOVA switched to online learning due to COVID-19, Prof. Victorine has failed to give us any work. He promised us through email that he would give us homework, but has not. He also not graded our midterms. He has abandoned our class.
Look I was debating giving Prof. V a good score in the beginning of the semester, but since the COVID-19 switch for NOVA he has essentially abandoned our class. Our tests from beginning of March have not been graded and we only have 3 exams. He has only contacted us once since the switch with one lecture video, no plan, nothing.
DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. I'm taking his class during the global pandemic. the class became online and for almost a month he didn't teach us anything. he uploaded only one 20 min video. we are on week 14 and I don't know how I'm doing in the class because he didn't return any grades. Worst professor I've ever taken at NOVA.
This is by far the worst math teacher I have ever had. When we moved to remote learning, he didn't talk or respond to us for a month! He posted one math video before turning us to a math teacher on youtube. Finals are next week and he has not graded the midterms. There is only a midterm and a final and both are about 10 questions. He doesn't teach
Difficult, petty, rude, and definitely not a good (even an OK) teacher. Takes things personally, doesn't care if you aren't understanding. Petty like no teacher I have ever taken. And I wish would act his profession. Don't like teachers who think students are stupid. Students are just that students to learn, we don't know much hence the questions.
Professor Victorine is GREAT. First 30 minutes of lecture is for questions. His exams are really tough, but if you practice enough you should be good. His grading is very fair. This isn't an easy class, not easy A. Only easy if you put the effort and practice a lot. Usually 3 exams, final replaces lowest grade. If you love Math take him,he does too
he's honestly a nice human but as far as teaching the subject and how difficult it is to contact him, its not very positive on that side. He tries to be relatable and hes a very fun going person at times but explanations and help with the ALEKS system is lackluster.
I'm grateful I took my first math class at NOVA with Professor Victorine. He really wants the students to learn and honestly, he doesn't really care about if you get all the homework done. He wants you to get the concept down. He grades a little slow, but in Zoom meetings, he likes to engage with the students about life and other topics.
The class is ok, I was intimidated at first, but he makes sure you learn the concepts
says he'll give a quiz every week instead of 4 big tests, but im nearing the end of my 15 week course and we have had 4 quizzes. if we mess up on the final we're pretty much screwed
best online class I've taken during the pandemic. if you've taken calc before would recommend. if it's your first time homework is a must. Professor is super nice, really good at expanding/explaining calc ideas. Need help? go to his office hours he's great at explaining things. Due to covid there's only 1 exam that determines if you pass or fail.
Amazing human and great to talk to but honestly he didn't teach me a damn thing for PreCalc, he used ALEKS for the entire class so I stopped showing up and only did ALEKS. Still passed with an A and now I'm in Calc class getting ready to have a panic attack as final season approaches.
Prof. Victorine is an interesting person but we spent A LOT of time chatting in class on random non-calc topics. Our class was behind on the material and we had to go over the last topics very sparsely because sometimes the whole class period could go by without any Calc involved. He did boost our grades tho, but now I'm scared about Calc 3
If you love math your probably gonna like him a lot. If you are there just to get through a class it might get trying at times. He is all about philosophy in math not just answering math problems. Also there are few but very heavy grades. My class had about 4 things graded. A Quiz and then 3 parts of a final.
Definitely the worst professor I've ever had. He only gave us ONE assignment throughout the entire semester, which was a quiz. Divided the final into two parts, philosophical questions and 10 math problems. No chance of improvement and he wont answer emails. Final grade is based on that one quiz and the final. Do not take him if you need Calc 1.
If you want a math class where the atmosphere is really chill, PLEASE TAKE HIM! I was really nervous about getting into calc before, but he is really welcoming and makes you feel at ease really quickly. This class is set up so you don't have to worry about many tests, just take-home quizzes (For Calc). If you slack off tho, you will fall behind.
I took Professor Victorine for Calc 1 & 2 and he was honestly a pretty good guy, really chill. I don't know what he is like in-person. He doesn't really go into detail on how to do certain stuff in Calc 2 and I was pretty confused. Had one quiz which was just HW problems and one final with 10 philosphical and 10 problems from the textbook.
Worst professor Ive ever had. The entire class was based on the final.
He is really the worst professor I have ever had. We ended up having just 2 quizzes and final in which if you fail you fail the class. He is pretty lazy when it comes to grading so be prepared to wait a month and a half for one quiz to be graded.
horrible
This teacher is terrible. If you ask a question he becomes very rude and tells you to ask someone else. Very unhelpful, never answered any of my emails or questions. Not the best teacher either - doesn't explain things well and does more rambling about politics, books, or video games than he does about the material.
We only did ALEKS the entire semester. The quizzes were pushed back several weeks. If you want to pass this class make sure to have knowledge in precalc and calc. He just reviews the stuff we are supposed to be doing in ALEKS. ALEKS was my teacher who taught me everything, he just reviewed. He cancelled class twice and never responds to emails.
take only if you want to know about the philosophical part of calc
No homework so how am I supposed to learn? Everything weighs on the test. You have to write essays for him?.. Doesnt care about his students.
Classes felt like Q/A, he never and I mean never thoroughly went over or showed proof for anything we were learning, he would only ask if we had questions from the textbook and would go over those. We didnt reach the last unit. The class only depended on 3 quizzes and 1 final so dont bomb. If you are in any stem major i advise not to take him.
Only thinks about philosophical portion of calculus 3, class its depended on just a few quizzes and a final which its 50% of your grade, fail the final you fail the class
I took his MTH 167 class, and do not recommend. He is very standoffish and makes it so you feel stupid if you ask him questions. It was an online course and he often canceled class. His demeanor is awful, and I didn't enjoy his class at all. Do not take this class
Teaches like we already know the material (even though we're here to LEARN it). Doesn't go into detail about any of the concepts and spends half the class time "answering" questions in the most ambiguous way. Assigned only 3 quizzes and a final (which was worth 40% of the entire semester grade). His teaching ruined my passion for math honestly.
Just dont
He didn't really explain the material in detail and got off-topic a lot. When he assigns homework he practically tells us to do all the problems in the book for that section. There were only 3 quizzes and a final where the final was 50% of your grade. Do not take if it's your first time learning this course.
He's terrible!!! DO NOT TAKE HIM. His class material is not organized and he himself doesn't teach you anything (Alecs does, "online HW learning tool). Alecs assigns many topics and there is no way to get them done on time bc it's time consuming. He is rude whenever u ask him a question, respond to emails, not understanding. CLASS WAS NOT GIVING!
Professor Victorine was my favorite math professor of all time. He gets a bad wrap due to his cooperative teaching style. He is a very fair grader, and half of the questions on the quizzes/Final are philosophical questions. He challenges his students to find the beauty in the concepts learned in class. As long as you follow & ask Qs you will pass.
Dude I can not stress this enough, DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES. He genuinely doesn't teach at all and gives an insane amount of homework on ALEKS. I have spent an entire day on this homework and I haven't even gotten close to finishing it. AND on top of that he gets super rude when you ask him questions and gets off topic so quickly.
Michael Victorine has an amazing personality and for those who easily understand math you probably won't have any problems. For those who have trouble understanding math he is not the professor for you. He does not effectively teach anything during his lectures meaning that the text book is the best source of information.
There is only one final exam. he gives 100% on quizzes but he does not even look at them. You will think you are doing fine until you get shocked on the final exam. Basically, you need to learn all on your own and when you go to class you need to ask tons of questions. He does not mind if the majority of the class fails.
He is a lazy grader, has an attiude problem, and there is no hw, so the course grade is dependent on exams. He put Calc 2 questions on our [Calc 1] tests to see who was looking up how to solve the questions. He has cursed at us and left class early on muliple occasions. Good luck if you take him. You basically have to teach yourself.
Terrible professor, failed to maintain a standard of professionalism for not only college professors, but any level of teaching. He is retaliating against my class for speaking up about it and will be admittedly grading our final harder bc of it. Btw, 1/4 of our final is 15 paragraphs on five different Calculus questions-longer than my ENG final.
DO NOT take this professor. He does a poor job explaining the material and ends class early if there are no questions from students. He did not grade the exams until 1 week before finals. If students ask questions regarding grades he gets angry and ignores them. The final grade is just 4 tests plus the final, leaving basically no room for error.
Professor Victorine: - Doesn't teach, period. Class consists only of students asking questions or silence - Prevents students from talking - Is very moody - Has mental breakdowns in class - Takes 2 months to grade exams - Assigns 5-8 page essay to final - Frequently ends class early Don't take Victorine if you want a quality calculus education.
I do not recommend anyone to take his class if your goal is to LEARN the new concepts of calculus. He goes off topic many times and does not grade anything on time. The semester I took him he had only 4 exams and a final exam which means there is EXTREMELY little room for error. Your grade can drop from an A to a C easily if you just mess up twice
hes nice + funny, but dont take him unless ur a math savant bc he doesnt teach during lecture. i had to learn everything from the textbook + youtube, and i was still struggling w/ his mean exam questions. we didnt get feedback on exams so we didn't know what to study for the final. and the final had a ridiculously long essay portion. very tiring
He cares about the subject and he cares about his students. However, I felt that he did not do his job as a teacher very well... His class had an excessively informal atmosphere. It is possible to learn in his class if you are respectful, if you care, if you focus, and if you put in the effort. I definitely do not reccommend him though...
A few things you should know about this prof: Informal lectures; treat class as a Q/A 10% attendance grade, 90% tests Graded weeks or months behind Final includes 5 3-paragraph essays I'm giving a 2 because of the essays. They talk about things like imagination and beauty but frankly I didn't see evidence of him nurturing those values students.
Just take a non lecture online course at this point with this professor, he didn't show up for 1/3 of his lectures and when he did attend, there was no structure at all in his teaching, he would just sit there and talk about random stuff, until someone had a question on a specific question in the textbook. Just tells you to read the textbook.
awful professor dropped his class because all he does is take breaks, doesn't lecture about math just random things, and doesn't grade anything. cancels class all the time because he "doesn't feel like teaching" relies too much on the textbook.
HORRIBLE. He is the worst professor I have ever taken at NOVA. Only grades are based on two exams, so if you fail one, you fail the course. Literally, take anyone else.
This class was a Q&A class and not a lecture class. He also takes weeks to grade stuff and gets irritated when you ask him questions.
I am genuinely baffled at how bad this professor was. PLEASE LISTEN TO ALL OF THE REVIEWS ABOUT HIM. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!!!! He doesn't teach, he whines and cries to the one student who responds in chat, and he also disregards students who have anything to say other than asking textbook homework questions. He is truly a terrible professor.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! It is a joke and a waste of time and money. He was out sick half the time. We learned only three topics.
please do yourself a favor and find another professor. mans does not care if the whole entire class fails. he cancels class all the time and i didn't find out what my grade was until the beginning of november. plus he's so moody for no reason. ngl his class gives me anxiety.
Most of his classes are about solving homework instead of teaching concepts. Class will end early if no questions asked. He acts childishly and makes a retaliation threat if someone complains about him. The exams are hard in some questions. He is a lazy and slow grader who will not explain why you lost points.
Victorine and his teaching style wasn't actually terrible. He was always kind to us. His tests were a bit challenging, but he would give out half credit on the tests if you completed the exam rewrites. Another complaint about him is he would be absent for class. This is true but honestly this is more of a problem with NOVA not having a sub in place
Mr Victorine is a good teacher. I took the class online but he gives us time before exams and informs us on the topics that would be on the exam before hand. He doesnt grade homeworks but gives a lot to help with familiarity of the topics.
Holds class in Q/A style most of the time, lectures exist but not the focus. Be ready to learn by yourself, format = you try first then ask him if you don't get it. Graded by 2 tests, 1 final, attendance 10%. Lets you have a formula sheet for exams (if he likes your class). Final includes written reflection (free points). Tests not that hard IMO.
I actually had this professor back in Fall 2019 and I never really wrote how bad this professor is. I'm at my last semester of college and was thinking of the worst college professor I had. Mr. Michael Victorine is the most garbage professor by far. He is such an jerk and his test were complete nonsense. Please avoid this professor!
I still cannot explain what this course was about, even after taking it. I'm sure Professor Victorine is more passionate about other courses, but if you are taking quantitative reasoning, avoid him. No effort, classes were cancelled almost every other time, etc.
Doesn't teach anything, just uses class to answer to questions from homework. If no one has any questions, he just ends class. For the exams, he gives no study guide or examples on what problems might be on the test. Never answers emails and frequently cancels class w/ no explanation. Be prepared to teach yourself everything!
BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!!! I would give him 10 stars if I could. I hate math so this is saying a lot. If you show up every class and participate, he notices. He also understood that no one in our class was a math major. As long as enough people try, he goes easier on you.
Grades are determined by a midterm and a final exam, nothing else. There are very few times when he has comprehensively explained an idea, which are under shadowed by his ability to write unclear notes for the class to follow. While this is a virtual class, however, the fact still stands that he has failed to explain every major idea in calculus.
He is nice. But not a good professor. 50% of the time he was not there! You will have to teach yourself with ALEKS! He can not really explain math well. And he makes it very well known what students he likes and who he doesn't like. One upside was that you could do test corrections and earn some points back on the test.
Did nothing half the Time but he's obviously very into excel. If you're just trying to get by and earn a good grade take him for quantitive reasoning. If you actually want to learn don't take him.
He cancels class at least 3-4 times a month during the semester. He does not care if we learn the material or not and could care less if everyone fails the finals. The majority of your work is on ALEKS which you would have to teach yourself. Would not recommend it to those who really need to pass the class in order to move on to a higher math.
Unfortunately my experience with the class was quite terrible. The care for students was not there at all. We did not receive a syllabus till 2 months into the semester. Professor called out of class at least 8 times. The canvas page was dry and never had any updates. No one knew what was on the final and the professors inability for care showed.
Does not teach any lecture content. If you just want to pass take him but he literally does not teach. Didnt even have a syllabus up.
Was never clear on what we were going over. He would just write example problems for everything and not explain any of the concepts. Never had slides for us to take notes from, the only time I learned something was when we had a sub. He was extremely passive aggressive. Everything was on ALEKS, only one exam and it was the final, no study guides.
We barely learned anything in this course. There is no syllabus on Canvas and nothing on Canvas in general. Most of the time the class was canceled or lasted 5 minutes if no questions were asked. I do not even know what this class is about, to be honest. There were no assignments, no projects or anything of the sort. Its baffling honestly.
This professor is very unorganized and uncaring. I do not recommend taking this class or any class that involves this professor.
Doesn't give af about his teaching or students. Class was just him yappin and EVERYTHING was on Aleks. No test/quiz, only final. There were only 3 grades for my final grade. Trust me when I say I stopped showing up to the class after 3 weeks and then showed up to the final, which was 10 questions asking about functions. Still gotn attendance grade.
Grades by the midterms and finals. Partial credit still given. No calculator needed. Passionately dislikes cheaters and rudeness. Very willing to help you with any questions you have. Everything covered in lessons. No need for textbook although he'd like you to have one. No phones or laptops in class. Bring a notebook and different colored pens.
I had to drop the class because of this teacher's rudeness and his inability to teach. I always took notes and paid attention but nothing made sense. He'd pick whatever he wanted from the presentation and then write a bunch of nonsensical stuff on the board. My last straw was when he made an unnecessary and rude statement. WOULDN'T RECOMMEND!!!
Victorine's class is a bit hit-or-miss, but unstuck ai helped me stay on top of the material when he was absent. Gotta be diligent with the ALEKS work, but the exams are manageable if you put in the effort.
Didn't show up to a third of the lectures. Straight up didn't grade the midterm until a week before the final, and those were the only assignments, so we had no idea how we were doing. Clearly unenthusiastic about teaching. Was just a bad environment and this is the one professor I've ever had who I believe should be fired. I paid for that!?
This professor was a hard professor it seemed like he didn't really know what to teach and he was very rude to most of the students and has said many out of pocket things to his students that are rude. He doesn't know what to put on exams and wasn't able to teach us all the chapters because he kept canceling the class.
Would not recommend to anyone he's awful and rude. He didn't know what he was teaching half of the time and the only reason I passed was because I read the textbook and taught myself. He never taught anything meaningful in the lectures. Our overall grade was only based on ONE exam and A FINAL because he didn't plan accordingly.
He is a good teacher if you keep up with the work. He is more than willing to help you with questions and explanations, and I find the way he structures homework and class to be optimal for busy schedules.
NO SYLLABUS. Grading criteria is unclear. Yells/screams during class. Outrageously hard homework questions that do not reflect the lecture or textbook AT ALL. UNAVAILABLE at all times. Never responded to a single email or question through WebAssign. Take someone else unless you are a math genius.
I took Victorines class this spring semester and I don't know how he still has his job. It was rare to have an in person class because he would always call off. Do not waste your money taking his class it's not worth it. His grades consist of three assignments for precal 162 a midterm(30%), Aleks homework(30%), and a final(40%). Take someone else.
Goated professor. He doesn't use slideshows and is not confusing to follow. Would love to see him teach higher levels of math but he only does calc 2 and lower.
This class was not okay for its teaching. During this time, it was zoom videos that were being used due to covid events, and yeah, even the virtual lectures were not the best. For as long as I was in the class, the lectures were excessively confusing and when I sent emails to him, he did not respond at all. I would not ever take him again ever.
The first day of class, he straight-up said he wasn't good at responding to emails. In the first lecture, he spent 20 minutes explaining a concept and then backtracked and said it wasn't useful. Our textbook for Webassign was incorrect because of him, and we spent a full class doing nothing. I ended up doing an asynchronous course. Disappointing.
