He monopolizes your time at the expense of your other classes. He is on an obvious power trip and humiliates students in class. He assigns too much reading. He has no respect for students.
The most intense professor I had at McGeorge. A ton of stress but I learned more in his class that any other.
Definitely one of the hardest professors at McGeorge, but also one of the ones I learned the most from. Demands you do the work, understand what you have read, and show up prepared and ready to participate. He was also always available to explain issues if needed, & interested in students well being
prof. Vitiello is more interested in his own ego than in imarting knowledge and wisdom in his students.
GREAT PROFESSOR- If you are one of his 4 favorite students! If you are one of the remaining 46 students in class, he will ignore you at best, belittle, embarrass, and intentionally humiliate you. Attempting to talk to him is fruitless. Purposely lowers grades in attempt to fail out 1st years.
The inordinate amount of homework and preparation that he requires makes his class feel like summer school. On top of that, his exam was nearly impossible to comprehend. There were probably ten or fifteen claims and counterclaims we were supposed to analyze in the fact pattern.
He's a megalomaniac; He has megalomania: A psychopathological condition characterized by delusional fantasies of wealth, power, or omnipotence.
Resembles Oscar the Grouch. Is helpful during office hours. More susceptible to brownnosing than most professors. I got an OK grade but learned very little substantive law for the amount of studying. I did learn how to deal with a wide range of professorial quirks -- he's got them all.
hard but you learn it
Very tough teacher. Will ream your ass if not prepared. His class will monopolize your life. HOWEVER, he is a very fair grader even though his tests are ridiculously hard, and his hard ass attitude will pay off by teaching students to prepare for class and life. Will instill great analytical ability.Hated it when I was in it, GRATEFUL I took it.
While Prof. Vitiello demands the best from his students and will nail you if you're unprepared, he is also one of the best. His lectures were clear to me and he is always more than willing to go over an issue in his office. The subject, by nature, is difficult for 1Ls, but once I used it in practice, I was thankful for all of the hard work.
excellent professor, very, very knowledgable on civil procedure and criminal procedure. Highly recommend him.
puts you thru hell. he also hides the ball. the class is a first year boot camp, and he does not teach the substantive law clearly, intentionally. best only for civ pro whizzes, if not steer clear.
Vitiello is a taskmaster. He expects you to be prepared and come with your "A" game every day. He thinks that, as a lawyer, you're assuming responsibility over the lives and fortunes of other people -- so you better come correct! The guy is brilliant, difficult, and funny. His class was brutal, but I learned more there than in any other class.
Supposedly I will appreciate what he did for me sometime later in my career
Prof. Vitiello is intentionally very hard on students in class. You must be very, very, very prepared for his class. He gets quite agitated if he feels that a student has not read or thought through problems carefully enough. However, if you are prepared you will be fine, and you'll feel much more confident in other classes having survived his.
Extremely demanding class. Baptism by fire for incoming law students. If you show up unprepared and he calls on you, prepare to be destroyed. That being said, he's a pleasant man if you've earned his respect.
Definitely a polarizing figure, people either love or hate him. Basically the only true socratic method prof left on campus. I really liked him; found him challenging but fair. His class helped with the bar more than any other because i actually remembered it.
Professor Vitiello asks, and expects, a lot. If you put in the time and the work, you will become a better law student and lawyer. You should take at least one class from him while at McGeorge--you don't get the full experience otherwise!
His class is highly socratic, which works for some and not for others. If you don't mind being challenged, and can hold your own when your preconceptions are challenged then you will enjoy the class. He's very policy oriented, which works well because it serves as a great skeleton to hang the rules on. Just make sure you're prepared or you'll hang!
Sometimes unclear in class and he crams a lot of material into one semester, tons of reading, but overall, he is a quality teacher. I learned a lot about criminal law, but I would not want to take another class from him.
Prepare to be publicly humiliated if you don't know the material inside and out. He has a passion for Civ Pro and knows pretty much all there is to know about it. He makes an already difficult subject harder. He has a reputation of being on of, if not, the hardest professors at McGeorge for a reason. Some people love him, I am not one of them.
One of the best professors at McGeorge. Don't get me wrong, he is hard, but you leave class understanding the material. This makes studying for the final a whole lot easier. He picks one person and stays on that person the entire class even if it's obvious you didn't read, thus it is vital to be 100% prepared in EVERY class.
He uses the socratic method more diligently first semester to intimidate students and requires a pointlessly high level of attn to detail for case reviews. He makes civ pro more difficult then it needs to be. The only good thing about him is that though he is horribly demanding in class, he is said to be a generous grader come finals.
Professor Vitiello was by far my favorite professor this past year. You have to be prepared for every one of his classes, and all throughout first semester he was very intimidating. Nonetheless, I don't think it's possible for me to forget the most important aspects of his course because he was SO GOOD at teaching the material. Kudos!
On one hand, he's scary and hard. On the other hand, of the most recent graduating class, the half of the student that had him for Civ Pro first year made up over three quarters of the Order of the Coif, nearly the entire editorial board of both law reviews, ran nearly all of the important clubs on campus, and won nearly all the awards at grad.
The best professor ever, absolutely loved him! He is the only one at McGeorge that I know who has office hours 5 days a week; he respects his students and really cares about teaching. His class is challenging and demanding, but ... hello ... this is law school, what else do you expect? I would not change him for prof. Main or anyone else.
Civ Pro. Lived in fear throughout 1L. He focuses on loopholes and I was rarely able to figure out what he was talking about in class. He goes out of his way to rip students, even when they read the case but are confused. Read through his past exams, and get a solid rule from each case...ignore the rest. If possible, avoid.
Vitiello is no joke. He knows his stuff and you'll know CivPro better than any other class. Get the Freer Tapes and black paperback!! Listen to the corresponding lecture before class and you will be an all-star. Vitiello sometimes hides the ball on purpose but Freer makes it pretty easy. 1st semest. mult choice comes straight from in class hypos.
AVOID HIM/HIS CLASS! This guy is sadistic, egomaniacal, drill sergeant, loves to publically humiliate students, doesn't help to learn black letter law you need to know, students have to worry more about psychologically surviving his class than learning, he loves to flunk students out of law school, doesn't care how much you've invested into it
An extremely gifted law professor who can use the socratic method to reach your weak spots and teach you. Demonstrates and teaches from an extreme liberal bias- a bit silly given that civ pro is really a class about rules, but he will spend that class time you paid for to decry "judicial activism" as fiction, and tear apart any Scalia opinion
Outline material before every class; no laptops allowed (but you adjust!); tests very fair; he is eager to REALLY help you (and the class) understand; very strict- no whispering to anyone, but you do learn the material from all angles; he is a little socially awkward, but that doesn't matter when he is teaching
Ugh. Other students try to console you that , after taking Vitiello, you'll be ready for the BAR. Not true. He is obsessed with footnotes & controversies better debated among law professors or more appropriate for a law review article. Anxiety is high in his class. Learning is low. I am a fan of the no laptop policy, though
Bizarre obsession with minutiae. Most important goal of his appears to be to completely dominate 1Ls' preparation time. Mean spirited/borderline psychotic about ferreting preparation weakness. Avoid at all costs. If must take, then focus on exams over daily class participation or you will pay the price. Better to get caught unprepared in 1 class.
Dreaded going to class! Is very helpful, but that doesn't make up for his major ego. Prepare yourself for public humiliation.
This is generally a hard subject and Prof. Vitiello doesn't make it any easier. His lectures are pretty removed from real life, emphasizes statutory interpretation and "how could this statute be re-written." Very esoteric teaching and not very practice real. Be prepared at all times!!! Class is tense and terrifying. You WILL get called on!
There is no doubt that he is probably the school's most demanding professor, but he knows what he's talking about. You'll honestly feel like you are talking to one of the nation's leading authorities in whatever class you have him for, and he probably is... It was a complete honor having him as a professor. He also cares about his students.
Vitiello is a demanding professor, but you will learn the law very well. He truly cares about his students and treats them like professionals. Work hard in preparation for this class and don't bring your laptop or EVER let your cell phone go off in class. One of the best at McGeorge.
Very bad experience. Rarely made points. Socratic believer. Hard to prepare for exam. Exams focus on note cases, and his multiple questions are notoriously difficult. No laptop policy created a lot of extra work. There are better ways to learn crim pro. Find a different professor or your GPA will pay for it.
Very demanding. One of the best teachers at McGeorge. Cares deeply about his students and the material. Be prepared for every class. Can be mildly esoteric, but it never bothered me.
I'm happy it's over! I did well, but good luck to those 1Ls and 2Ls that for some reason decide to take one of his classes. He's a fair grader. I probably lost a year or two on my life because of his class. Watch the PaperChase so you know what to expect. Although, I'll add that he cares about his students unlike Kingsfield.
Not sure where others had problems, but Vitiello is fair and consistent. Never humiliated anyone in class, and seemed genuinely interested in helping students. I enjoyed his class, even though it's not my interest, and would take another class with Vitiello. I only wish he focused on CA law, instead of crim law generally.
Vitiello takes what is otherwise a difficult and dry subject and animates it so well. Is very demanding but holds himself to high standards as well. Is super available and concerned about his students. A true gentleman and scholar.
Heard he was bad when I arrived at McGeorge, but he ended up being my favorite professor. He is demanding, but as long as you read and take notes prior to showing up to class, you'll do fine. He is very clear too, and makes a lot of jokes.
You know its bad when every alum you talk to laughs when you tell him you had Vitiello for Civ Pro. I mean c'mon his lectures are hardly decipherable, I have seen first hand how his comments have been used to put-down instead of encourage new law students. Decedent guy outside the classroom but McGeorge could use a change.
He is very tough on you in class, but the material is presented in a very clear manner. He is GREAT in office hours and very committed to helping his students suceeed.
He is passionate about his subject and relentless in getting the most out of everyone. Make sure you are prepared- he always is. You will learn a lot, but it may not be pretty.
stressful
Plays favorites and confuses students who are struggling to understand the daunting material as being unprepared. Avoid if you can.
READ THE RULES (FRCP)! The hardest professor I've ever had in my life. Class was always confusing and you need to be alert 100% of the time. But he will teach you a lot of skills you will need for your legal career. Impossible exams, but fair grader, so that's a plus!
Very nice outside of class, and I enjoyed studying the materials for class and preparing for class. Class however is another story. The material is not presented clearly, and you will get sometimes 10 emails from the Prof a day highlighting concepts he didn't get to cover fully. He can be disrespectful towards students in class who HAVE prepared.
He is the worst educator on the face of this planet. He knows the material inside out, but he can't teach. He makes EVERYTHING x1000 more complicated than it should be, most of his students are confused and frustrated. His style of teaching is HORRIBLE. Outside of class, however, he is a very nice individual.
Wonderful professor, one of the best I have ever had. Not sure about some of these other reviewers' classes, but in mine he was extremely clear and straightforward with the material and what he expected students to know.
He is the definition of the Socratic method. The book has a lot of amazing theory, just not a lot you will need for the final. He used Dressler so a commercial outline will save a head ache. I did not use the book or class notes to study for the final. His class is more of a mental exercise class, but the actual take away isn't as complicated.
Outstanding professor. Vitiello expects the same things out of his students that law firms and clients will expect from you after law school: Work ethic, an ability to communicate your ideas (especially in writing), and added points for intellectual curiosity.
The worst professor I have EVER had. Subject matter is difficult, however the way he teaches makes it worse. If he fits into your learning method you will like him, but if he doesn't, you will be confused, even if you read and prepare. I have talked to several students, either they like it or don't; there's no in between. Nice guy outside of class.
V is a prof that u either love or hate. I LOVED him. He taught me so much more than a book could about the fundamentals of CP. He's not easy & be ready to have a lot of anxietystress before class, but remember that he genuinely cares about students. Won't like u if u are unprepared. Having V is a right of passage - socratic to the death.
The path to doing well in Vitiello's class is clear, if alot of work. Do all the assigned readings, pay attention lectures, and then go to his officer hours prepared (last one is essential). His class is very polarizing however, if you don't meet his expectations, its easy to feel lost and fall behind in class due to the pace he goes at.
Extremely difficult, but at the same time, very thorough and eases up on the grading of exams. If you hate the socratic, avoid at all costs! Most I've ever learned from one class
Class participation is very important - more so that you volunteer and do so regularly and substantially. Not only does it help with learning, but he seems to like it and doesn't call on you for the normal cold calling stuff after you volunteer for a while. Just be sure to pay attention to everything he says. Every word matters.
Vitiello takes great efforts to ensure that every student who wants to succeed has a fair opportunity to do so. Is his class easy? NO! He is fair and will work with students on how to improve.
Vitiello is both the toughest Professor I had my first semester and the most caring. If you are willing to do the heavy lifting he refers to frequently (meaning read every word in the text, supplement, and frcp) you will do great! Sometimes his lectures are a bit hard to decipher but go to his office hours and you will get it!!
Excellent class, interesting material, and a hilarious Professor! Do the reading, put in the work, go to office hours, ask questions, participate in the hypos and you will love him! Great Professor who cares tremendously about his students.
I love Professor Vitiello! He expects a lot out of his students, but the payoff is great! I learned so much from him, and he really does care a great deal about his students. Highly recommend.
Prof. V is the OG on campus. I wish every Professor were like him. He holds you accountable to know the material and does so in the student's best interest to become stellar attorneys. I learned so much from him in comparison to other classes. Be sure to come to class prepared, and you will do great.
He's what you'd expect from a law school professor who has mastered use of Socratic method. Come to class ready, he expects much from you. You may come to class believing you understand the material, but he will show you that you know very little. It's an intimidating class, but very fulfilling. If you do it right, you will be better for it.
Pros: friendly outside of class Cons: you will read the most for this class out of all your classes, Socratic method, will continue to put a student on the spot whether prepared or not, exams tend to focus on the FOOTNOTES from reading, no laptop policy in class, sends lots of emails, class will move on whether you understand or not
There are mixed reviews about Professor Vitiello but I am here to tell you how great he is. Not only is he one of the best lecturers I have ever had, he is also very kind and compassionate. He can be tough but he truly only wants what is best for his students and wants to push them to be critical thinkers and quick on their feet. Best at McGeorge!
Poor teaching style
while he is knowledgeable in his field, and while he can be very friendly outside of class, he does not know how to teach. You will read so much in his classes. He enjoys making exams out of the footnotes in the readings, and he is a tough grader as well. He does not utilize PPs, so the entire class is just him talking and cold calling students.
Professor Vitiello challenges you to the next level. The workload was heavy. However, I learned a TON in his class. He gets you to think strategically about the rules and the stories behind them. I found the skills he taught useful. Highly recommend if you want to be challenged; do not recommend if you don't want to work long hours into the night.
Poor Teaching Style Makes subject more difficult: Freer was a lifesaver. If you must take for Civ Pro, just pretend Freer is your ACTUAL Professor... because he IS... all of Vitiello's courses are based on Freer, and he even models himself after the guy. He has a front row 10 students per class, so if you're not in, you will feel left out.
he may be a good guy outside of class, but you will struggle unless you are one of the 5 people he enjoys. He never was an attorney, only a professor, so while he has mastered that, he has not mastered the actual art of what happens outside of class. Makes the class harder so he can experience a challenge. Does not make class enjoyable
Poor teaching style. Spends the entire class asking students questions, but never circles back to what the main point is. If you don't understand what's going on he assumes you just aren't trying. Assigns a ton of additional questions to answer before class, but does not go over all of them. If you have to take him get a supplement!
Professor Vitiello is someone who holds a wealth of knowledge in a topic that is extremely complex and difficult. He prepares the class for the reality that judges and the law in general will not be as forgiving as professors in law school. While some may not like him or find him difficult, he is very accessible and friendly outside of class.
Within class, he is fine disrespecting students but will not tolerate even the slightest pushback. Outside of class during office hours, it was my experience that he was rude and would often answer questions with "it's in the reading. reread it and youll have your answer". Why teach the MPC if it isnt law?
His teaching style is antiquated and confusing. Talks in circles and doesn't even finish points. Degrades students in class for not reading closely enough and fails to realize that people have different learning styles. Can't even ask questions without fear of being made fun of in front of entire class. Ruined what was supposed ot be a fun subject.
If you see him assigned to your schedule, CHANGE IT ASAP. He assigns so much reading and refuses to change his teaching style for students. He will embarrass you in class because he focuses on a miniscule part of the reading. Its so obvious he has a group of students he loves to call on in class because he thinks they always have the right answer.
As others have said, if you see Vitiello in your schedule, change it. He's rude, disrespectful, and his lectures focus on minutae that will direct you away from primary subject matter. He hides the ball to the point of making a simple concept difficult. Use Freer on west academic, he simplifies complex material, a hallmark of a good professor
Do not take Vitiello.
Great if you are a auditory learner which I am not. He does not use visual aids or powerpoints, but just lectures straight through. Tough grader, especially hard multiple choice questions. Well respected but not my cup of tea.
A very tough Professor and expects a lot from students. However, he truly wants people to succeed and understand the material. Cold calls frequently and free-form. READ THE FOOTNOTES of the cases assigned and make sure to read the Notes and Questions following each case; he expects you to know those well. Fair grader and very accessible
Do not take this professor. If you have the choice to take a different professor, take the other. I can't even stand reading his Bridge To Practice books assigned for classes he does not teach - they're written in his lecture style - super open ended, hide the ball, heavy on critique of the court decision and convoluted and give no clear answer
I was placed in this professors criminal law section. So far he has sent 10 emails and chastised a classmate as not doing the readings after he asked a question on a case he didn't understand. I checked the ratings and I am wondering if it's possible to change sections.
Professor V's is the definition of the Socratic Method. You will rarely get a straight forward answer from him regarding the black letter law. He will almost always answer your question with a question of his own. If you still struggle he will tell you that you haven't read closely enough. Hiding the ball is his claim to fame. Avoid.
I truly do not get the hate MV gets here. Yes, he is old-school, and will not be nice if you did not do ALL of the reading and answer ALL of his assigned questions. Yes, he hides the ball, and expects you to work for your grade. Yes, he meanders a little. BUT if you can handle that, then you're gonna learn a lot. Also very helpful in office hours.
I was very scared of being placed in his class because of all of the scary reviews. Vitiello is a fantastic professor and is such a good resource. Yes, his cold calls can be brutal, and he will call you out if you don't do your homework. He just wants you to succeed. You're in law school for a reason, and you gotta work hard in his class.
Unfortunately, if you're one out, you won't have much choice and we'll have to take him for Civil procedure or first semester or criminal law second semester be prepared to be confused and to teach yourself the subject.
