Do not take him if you get bored easily. He's really nice, but he's a really bad teacher. He doesn't answer anyone's questions and he is SO boring. His lectures are unclear and very unorganized.

I had this class at night for three hours. He speaks repetitively for such a long time that you lost interest. The tests are easy but there is no review. This class lacks structure! If you have another option, you might want to stick with that. Attendance mandatory. Random homework that has nothing to do with the course.
I had a really hard time getting involved with this class. His lectures were extremely boring and he rambled on and on about the same things. He also always used powerpoints that rarely covered actual test material. Waste of time.
Crime in America, One of the best instructors at Texas State. I would take him again. Made an A.
IMO I thought he was a really good teacher for my intro class. I admit, we did not use the book as much as I hoped to make it worth what I paid, but he is patient and gives opportunities for extra credit. I love NPR now because of him and feel more up to date with what's going on in the world. Also, he's a cutie for a prof
Attendance Mandatory. Required Textbook that was almost never used and extremely expensive. Rambling during lectures. His Powerpoints are almost useless. If you're looking for an easy class with a professor whose helpful and knows how to teach, look elsewhere.
Great professor! Interesting content and seems to truly care about the material he is teaching. If you show up and do the required assignments, there should be no reason to not make an A or B.
I think he is a really good teacher. Leads a class discussion and is open to new ideas and opinion. Slides are a little repetitive, but you can be sure that if he says something more than twice it will probably be on the test.
To get an A in this course: Go to EVERY class (very good extra credit for perfect attendance, it bumped my grade up to an A), Focus more on lecture than on Power Points (engaging in lecture is even better), and review the review he gives before every test VERY well (read through it many times). Oh, and a personal finance tip: Don't buy the book. :)
Fairly easy class, as long as you show up you should get a A or B, tons of extra credit, and easy tests do to outlines being posted before the test.
His intro class may seem a bit slow-moving, but he takes time to explain each concept. You learn in this class. He is generally funny as well. He is kind of bad at everything that isn't sociology including spelling. Often times if students have complex questions, he will not understand and simply move on. These questions are generally very abstract
Nice guy. He explains everything thoroughly, sometimes even too much, but still not bad. Going to class is important, and make tests so much easier. Good extra credit from perfect attendance, and a couple other extra credit options. 3 tests, and 4 homeworks. I only used the book twice on 2 hw assignments. Tests are straight from his long reviews.
Attend class, take good notes from his PPT, and use the review he gives you. Attendance is a must and extra credit is offered for perfect attendance. The tests are directly related to the PPT. Good prof and interesting class.
Mr. Whitehawk is a bit rude. When he asks a question and somebody gave a wrong answer he would act rude towards the student. Attendence is mandatory, but he gives you a fully filled out review before the tests, so you really don't have to take any notes. Also put the powerpoints online, but not before each class. AVOID THIS TEACHER IF POSSIBLE.
The material learned is just so simple, it would be nice if attendance wasn't necessary because I don't feel like much is really learned in class anyway.
Disagree with some of these ratings.. I'm kinda of slacker and yet this has been the easiest and funnest class I'v had so far. He's very helpful and laid back. Makes material clear and let's the class interact(debate). Makes rude comments sometimes, but every time, the student set themselves up for it and deserved it. I recommend him!
Took his summer '12 intro class, and it was a walk in the park. I found his lectures engaging and interesting - great if you already like sociology, and if you don't, you get to learn some neat concepts. Extremely nice (even to that one kid who wouldn't shut up) and eager to debate ideas with the class. Attendance mandatory.
100% recommend!!! He kept everybody engaged, his lectures were very interesting. I had him at 9:30 am and always walked in sleepy, but I've never fallen asleep in his class. You just can't! He was very thorough with his work. We were given reviews before exams and they were extremely helpful. Again, would TOTALLY RECOMMEND HIM!
tests are straight from powerpoints. a couple of assignments which are from the book but I just photocopied them from a classmate, because that is really all we need the book for. He is very thorough in class. Tests are EASY, almost too easy for college, but im not complaining. He is a good professor
Long, boring, and rambling lectures. Book was used once through entire course. Tests aren't exactly hard, but you are given a 20+ page outline to study instead of an actual study guide. Avoid teacher if you're looking for an easy grade. Seems way too complicated for an intro course.
Pretty good Professor. I wouldn't mind taking him again. 3 exams combine for 90% of your grade and you have 2 different assignments for 5% each. The exams are not hard as long as you 1. Go to class and 2. Study the powerpoints on TRACS especially as a refresher before the exams. (Perfect attendance = a big bonus to your grade.)
Whitehawk is very nice and promotes open discussion in class. His tests are average but have a lot of weight on them. Try to befriend a classmate so you don't have to buy the book if they did. His lectures got boring but i would recommend him.
Really enjoyed this course. Took his Criminology course over the summer, and really loved the open discussion atmosphere of his classes. Even in a short summer class, he really took the time to explain everything and make sure the whole class understood a topic before moving forward. Also really respects every student's opinion.
Professor was expectant on critical thinking but very understanding and did not leave any gaps. Really tried to help students understand and learn the criteria.
Professor Whitehawk is a cool lecturer. He wants the class to engage in discussion so he would not have to talk so much. He HATES for you to be on your phone or laptop not paying attention. He will call you out and try to embarrass you if he sees you doing so. His lectures are long, test are a little tricky, but manageable. Only 3 exams.
I took Professor Whitehawk for Criminology. While the class was not catastrophic, his teaching was not the best. It's more of a seminar and open discussion rather than lecture based. He provides power points and exam reviews which only cover some material on the test. Online quizzes. Textbook required. Exams are tough if you don't study hard.
Attendance isn't mand. but it is worth 10pts in the end. he'll tell you to print out the outlines, do it, they're basically the test at your fingertips. if you aren't interested in soci, than memorization alone will get you an A. only 3 tests including the final all worth 90% of your grade. one of the assignments is out of the book and worth 5%.
If you have perfect attendance you get 10 extra points to your grade. Lectures are actually very interesting and easy to follow. Tests come straight from powerpoints and outline which are posted to TRACS. He was very funny and open to any comments or questions and would try his best to explain the material so everyone could understand. Easy A
Some of these reviews are just wrong. Whitehawk is a great guy and has these awesome open discussion lectures that keep everyone engaged. I have taken my fair share of boring teachers, but he just isn't. When he asks how you're doing, he genuinely cares and wants to know. Class is easy enough. The one paper is overly easy.
Whitehawk knows what he is talking about. Very passionate & interesting lectures; a class that gets you thinking & stirs emotion. Tests are not easy, but if you adequately study & put in the time & effort it is an easy A. Extra credit opportunities through attendance, pop quiz & guest lecturers(when applicable). One of my favorite classes to date.
He will definitely challenge, but it's more fulfilling when you do better. He attempts to make every lecture interesting, regardless of topic. I would highly recommend his classes. I have taken 3 of them, and wish he taught more.
I literally can't keep my eyes open but because he takes attendance, you have to show up. However, you can sign in and leave and all his lectures are on TRACS with the test outlines. If you don't plan to study or read over them, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. The tests are also tough because some of the questions make no sense
This professor is narrow minded. He says he wants your opinion but really only wants to hear what you have to say if you agree with him. I've had to correct this professor at times when his information was not correct and insulting.
This was a very enjoyable class! Class attendance and participation make it easier to do well on tests, but the outline reviews would be enough to get you by as well. Lectures can sometimes seem long but Whitehawk breaks up any monotony with interesting statistics, engaging humor, and a quick pace. Some discussion topics bothersome to some students
My first Sociology class and now I am hooked. Took away a lot of knowledge. What he teaches can be applied and viewed in every day life. I would take again in a heartbeat and the lectures can get interesting if you follow him down the rabbit hole. Loved class
Whitehawk is an incredible professor. I learned so much in this class! He really knows his stuff. There are weekly online quizzes from the textbook, only three tests, a few papers. If you go to the lecture you'll pass.
Nice guy, but easily one of the hardest classes I have taken at Texas State. If you're a psychology major I would not recommend this class, it goes back on everything that I have learned about individualism and made it hard for me to understand. Test outlines are extremely long and vague, also the hardest tests I have taken.
Online chapter quizzes every week. Tests are pretty difficult, and his lectures are long and sometimes interesting, but the interesting lecture are few and far between. There are many chapter quizzes, two tests, a final, and two writing assignments.
dont bother studying the slides just read the outlines inorder to pass the class. gives extra credit, a paper and perfect attendance. So somewhat an easy A class. & dont forget to do quizzes online. Read the book inorder to do the quizzes.
I took Professor Whitehawk for Sociology and loved him and the class. He's an outstanding professor and knows what he's talking about. He gives three tests, weekly quizzes online, and one paper. He also gives an extra credit paper as well as extra credit for perfect attendance. There is no reason you shouldn't receive an A+ in his class.
Professor Whitehawk encourages class discussion. His exams are lecture based, so you want to show up. Gave us group exams if we kept perfect attendance.
Professor Whitehawk is really cool. Sociology is a tough subject to understand at time but he makes his lectures really clear. Also if you have no absences before the test you can take an individual test and then a group test and he advantages the score together which helps out a lot.
Professor Whitehawk is one of the better professors at Texas State. I enjoyed his class and was entertained for the majority of the course. Group Test help a lot if you have perfect attendance. Make sure to do the quizzes every week as well.
Professor Whitehawk has to be one of the best professors on campus. He makes class engaging & his lectures will actually teach you why the world/people function the way they do w/o any monotony. You only need one $10 book for the class for laid-back weekly quizzes & there's also an option to take group exams for perfect attendance during each unit.
I loved this class! Mr. Whitehawk was engaging, I don't think I ever found his lectures boring. Textbook was just a small book around $25 and was pretty interesting as well. There are a couple quizzes over it but it's pretty straightforward. If you don't miss class, you can take a group exam which is a nice perk.
Engaging and fun lectures. A wonderful non biased professor that provides insightful conversation on our society. I would love to take any course Whitehawk teaches.
white hawk tries to make his lectures engaging as possible he allows you to take your exams individually and if you have perfect attendance he would put you in a group with others who don't miss class to gain a higher grade you read a book and have quizzes online over each chapter and he provides one make up exam after your final EASY A!
Whitehawk is very passionate about what he teaches. His lectures were interesting and he encourages his students to participate in conversation. If you have perfect attendance, you're able to take the exams in a group which helps your grade a lot. Besides exams, you'll have quizzes on the book needed which were not hard at all.
Super awesome guy! His test are clear, if you have perfect attendance you can take a group test after the individual (Averages the 2). Small book required (rent for $10) for quizzes on TRACS. Over all super easy class, just show up.
AWESOME guy! So sarcastic and so funny. He has no shame in calling people out and telling them exactly how it is. His lectures are super interesting and they make you want to participate. His test are kinda hard, but if you come to class you should be prepared for it. Gives extra credit so COME TO CLASS!
Took Criminology and Juv. Delinquency at the same time, the concepts overlap so it was helpful. I really enjoyed both classes, just read before the weekly quizzes, study, take the group exam, and you'll make an A. He really enjoys teaching and wants you to make a good grade, you just have to put in the work. Wish all prof.s were more like him!
I love him!
I can't say enough good things about this professor! You will be challenged and learn a lot.
I learned so my important things about my life and society that are sure to help me in my future and frankly help me be a better person.
I really enjoyed his class, it wasn't too hard. If you have perfect attendance (which starts over after each exam) he gives you an opportunity to take the exam as a group! He is super funny and his class made me think and got me super interested! His lectures are always entertaining and informative. Super awesome professor!
Michael is so funny! his lectures are always entertaining and he is by far one of my favorite professors here. I would strongly recommend him for this class! You will not be disappointed. If you don't miss class, he allows group exam choice. (do it) Online quizzes over short book (not a textbook) he is a solid professor!
Whitehawk really knows what he's talking about. He really loves class discussion, and doesn't stop us even when we get behind in the material. Book is needed for weekly quizzes. 4 exams total, he offers a group exam if you have good attendance. 2 major essays-kinda difficult, but he gives good feedback. Take him. Interesting stuff.
Professor Whitehawk makes his lectures feel like your dad is teaching you a life lesson. He's funny, extremely caring, and straight forward. Participate in discussions, show up to every class (then you can take the group exams, which really help) and stay off your phone. His outlines and Powerpoints are on TRACS, so you don't have to take notes.
Professor Whitehawk is awesome! He makes his lectures fun and engaging. He will also let you take a group exam for tests if you have perfect attendance. His exams do cover a lot since theres only 3 but its really not bad!! Hes a pretty funny and laid back guy! Would take again!
3 tests + quizzes over $10 book. Very thorough and makes thing s easy to understand and connects everything to real world situations. The tests are over powerpoint that he gives you access to and if you have perfect attendance you can take a group exam.
A great professor! He really knows how to grab your attention in lectures and loves for students to participate. Very hilarious and super chill. I've laughed so much in this class it's ridiculous. BUT attendance is mandatory and important!
must show up to class to participate in group exams, which are nice. Vague material, class discussions all of the time & not enough learning the material.
Prof Whitehawk is such a great prof!!! His tests are based on his lectures and his guidelines. Attendance isn't mandatory but for every test, if you haven't missed class, you get to take a group exam (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED). If you don't miss class all semester, you get to take a group exam for the final as well. Very interesting guy
By far the worst professor I've taken. His tests are so vague and don't correlate to the reviews he posts. You basically have to go every day to class to pass.
Whitehawk is the whole reason I became a sociology minor. 10/10 would take again. He really appreciates it when you come to his office hours. Don't wait to go after you don't do well on a test, stay ahead of it. Also, group exams are also for the final, so just go to class man. You learn so much and get rewarded for it.
Mr. Whitehawk is a great professor and I learned so much in this class. His lectures were interesting and there were many times for class discussion. The tests weren't hard as long as you went to class, took notes, and studied the review as well.
Prof Whitehawk is amazing. He makes the course work interesting and easy to understand while encouraging discussion. There is a mandatory reading with weekly quizzes but it's a short simple book. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you have perfect attendance he lets you take the tests as a group. Interesting and easy class with a great professor
If you're okay with ignoring logical fallacies and frequent contradictions, you'll be fine in this class. Each class is entirely lecture based and he'll occasionally ask for people to participate in the discussion (not required). Pretty easy class if you can tolerate his pretentious personality, contradictory ideas, and reading a textbook.
He was a funny professor, always wanted our opinions on the things we discussed in lecture. Lecture was pretty heavy but the exams were all on the PPTs he had but he added some new things here and there so if you miss you wont have that one thing that is going to be on the test.
By far one of the funniest professors. His class was interesting but you have to really read the book he assigns for the weekly quizzes. He only grades based on 10 quizzes from the book, 3 tests (1 including the final) and one random assignment. He offers extra credit as well. Great professor, could've easily got a better grade with more effort!
The absolute WORST. I hated every single class with this professor. He is extremely condescending. He wants class participation but when someone does say something he completely shuts it down if it's not the exact example he wants. Make perfect attendance between tests and u can take a group exam. He averages ur individual test with the group test.
Prof. Whitehawk's class is my least favorite class I have ever taken. The coursework is boring, lectures are tedious, and quizzes are really vague and hard to find answers within the book. The upside is the group test, which really helps your grade, but everything else in this class is just substandard. However, he does care about his students.
The lectures were the most interesting of any class I am in. Buy the ebook and the online quizzes are easy. The tests are easy if you study, and you can take a group test if you have perfect attendance. Please do not take this class if you plan on being on your phone the whole time.
Tests are passable if you study. He also does group tests for perfect attendance between tests and group final for perfect attendance all semester. Lectures feel long but hes pretty funny so they arent really boring. Online quizzes over the book are super easy.
Unless youre willing to show up to every single class given, I would pass on this class. Hands down the worst class Ive taken thus far. His teaching is merely tolerable. One plus is that there isnt an expensive textbook, just a $10 book from amazon. Lectures are a pain to get through. However, his enthusiasm makes it easier to bear.
If you have perfect attendance you can take very single test including the final in a group, I missed one day and couldnt take the first test in a group and failed it, make sure you go to class.
Go through $10 textbook, highlight bolded words & u made a 100 on all of ur quizzes. The exams are ridiculously easy &, to make it 10x's easier, if you're never absent to class u get to take all exams in groups. 2 essays over rlly cool articles...i didn't read the full article or do the min. page limit & still got a 97 for a grade. Take this class!
Very enthusiastic and knowledgable in his lectures. I really enjoyed being in his class because he chooses really interesting topics. Just plan on attending nearly everyday you have the class to get the most out of the course.
Best class hands down mic drop
Attendance matters, if you have zero absences he lets you take his tests in groups. Lectures are hard to stay awake, but I managed. Online tracs quizzes weekly from a 10$ book he has you buy. Some answers are not in the book, no textbook which is nice. HE/s a good guy, sarcastic at times, when someone makes an opposing argument, he seems defensive.
Overall, a pretty good guy, although gets a bit defensive if his ideals are challenged. The tests aren't too hard, most come from the class powerpoints. In his defense, it was his first year teaching this class (in which he had to create). 4 or 5 opportunities for extra credit. Least favorite aspect: he will drop a letter grade if >3 absences.
I really like Prof Whitehawk. The lectures are long, but interesting. Tests seem easy, but no one ever gets the grades they thought they would. GO TO CLASS so you can take the group exam. It brought me up 6-10 points everytime. Hated the book we had to read. There was an extra credit paper
Makes various claims without sources to backup the evidence provided in lecture. This course is heavily dependent on exam grades and professor often rushes you during the exam by failing to provide enough time (especially during the final).
I don't understand what all the hype about him is. He thinks he knows everything and shut you down if you bring up on objection to what he is teaching, even if it is an intelligent objection. His instructions on assignments are confusing (and he doesn't even remember what he puts in the instructions so forget asking him about it in class).
I want to start with saying he is a great professor and knows his stuff. But, he shouldn't be teaching a family class. He spends a lot of time on topics that are basic Sociology, not family. Also, he makes you buy a book only for online quizzes. He never even talks or refers to it in class. It's annoying. His tests make up most of your grade.
Dr. Whitehawk is an amazing professor. 10/10 RECOMMEND. I took him for a summer Sociology 3337-Family course and I learned soooo much and I never got bored in his class. His lectures are well organized and cover great material that is fascinating. Signing up for his class was a great decision and I'm glad I did it.
Does a great job of staying on topic for things that will be on the tests and has great discussions. Tests are based only on lecture so if you miss a day you're probably missing something for the test. You get to take group exams for every test including the final if you have perfect attendance. Every test has a very helpful outline provided.
Changed my life for the better
Professor Whitehawk was an amazing professor who really went out of his way to help us understand and apply the material in this course. For every unit he has his slides posted and an outline that all the test questions are pulled from practically. His lectures are super fun and engaging. If you show up to every lecture you get to take a group test
He would avoid questions by saying his opinion even if it was about our attendance. Said many things that raised too many questions about if he should be teaching or not. Talks to us like children and not as adult students. Also, his kids are brought up EVERY class.
Typical annoying man. Will ask for elaboration from students who are already uncertain to speak in class and then will be dissatisfied with anything they can come up with and then he will say the "answer" and it's the same thing they said but just very specific... Condescending.
10 quizzes and 2 test + final. Attendance required but lectures are very interesting ad you wont get bored. Can work in groups if perfect attendance for test. Gives ok feedback and office hours are eh. You can download a free PDF of the textbook online, do all the quizzes online and be fine. Dont buy it since its only used for online quizzes.
I didnt like him at first but he grew on me pretty ok expect to call on. big on no phones. only 3 test total. test was pretty straight forward if you take good note and study his outline. textbook is an cheap easy book with 9 chapters and you have quiz over each chapter online which are all uploaded in the beginning . only 1 assigned assignment
BUY THE ONLINE BOOK it helps with the quizzes. He gives alot of extra credit for not missing a class. Tests were taken in alone once then in groups after that and he averages the scores. He's honestly kind of annoying but the class was great conversation, I enjoyed going. If you apply yourself you'll make an A
I loved this professor. He always had a great attitude during class. Lectures were interesting and he definitely encouraged participation. We did individual/group exams and they were fairly easy if you studied good. Would take this professor again. Good class.
Get the online book for quizzes. If you have questions it's better to email the IA. For each exam he posts an outline of all the material covered. Super cool and funny guy but the lectures get a bit boring. His wording on exams can be unnecessarily difficult, so study.
The course textbook was a different approach then in other courses I have taken, but it was refreshing and stimulating. Professor Whitehawk is kind and understanding as long as you care too. The 10 quizzes are over the book and a big part of the grade. They are short. Read the chapter you will pass. Pass the test last minute? Read the outline, BAM
I took this class online. Lecture every class period. Need book because quizzes over chapters. Definitely need to attend lectures for tests and study for exams. Grade mostly depends on test scores, so be prepared.
He is such an interesting teacher love him! He makes you think about your stance on pretty much everything. I learned so much from him. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. easy class and actually learn a lot. Studying his reviews will give u an A.
Not a bad professor or class necessarily, but the class is brutal if you don't like writing papers. It is not labeled as a writing intensive course, but it should be. Participation is heavily encouraged, but some of your questions might get told, "No that's wrong." As long as you do everything you'll be fine, but buy the book for the quizzes.
Pay attention and you will learn a lot.
Hes okay. But the first day, when doing introductions, he said Externally, Im white. But internally Im brown which is extremely wrong to say. Like this is a criminology course, so at least know how race and ethnicity works and be correct about it. But he also said similar things throughout the semester. So I would never take him again. Sorry
you will write a lot. this class is hard
Professor Whitehawk is a very energetic person but says some questionable things during class such as on the first day saying Im white on the outside, and brown on the inside as well as a few other things not appropriate throughout the semester. He asks a lot of questions and requires an answer to move on. I would go to every lecture if possible.
The exams are over the notes, and the chapter quizzes are over the book. I failed every exam in that class because he lectured over so many different things, when the exams were over way too specific subjects. Everytime I ask him a question he makes me feel dumb. He is funny, and you can tell that he loves his job. Study the notes you take in class
He is very enthusiastic about the subject that he teaches, he is very engaging and ensures that you understand the material to your best ability. Although attendance is not required, I do recommend attending as much as possible since there is some material he goes more in depth as to what is in the PowerPoints
barely any assignments, your grade is riding on quizzes every week (which are easy) and exams. literally only one assignment. there are two extra credit assignments he has, but he takes a while to grade them. while attendance isn't mandatory, the exams sometimes have questions on what he says at lectures. go to class!
He's a great professor who loves his job. The content he teaches is very interesting and will change the way you think of society. However, I've noticed that some people don't like him because he "makes them feel dumb when they ask a questions". I've seen this because a student go on a rants making opinionated assumptions. Very entertaining
Love him! Taken 2 courses and signed up for 2 more. He has a clear grading policy that he lays out at the beginning of the year. People that don't follow it complain when he doesn't hand them an A. The course is super interesting. I actually like studying the material. Kinda tough. the more effort you put into the class the better your grade
was so boring! I think he was genuinely trying but his lectures felt like a waste of time. If you don't show for the lecture you won't pass the class bc the test is purely based on in-class discussion. he doesn't lecture by telling you "this is the information" he stands there and says well this is the topic what do you guys want to know.
Professor Whitehawk is a wisenheimer. Subpar professor who exaggerates lectures & engages inefficacious discussion. No need for your opinion or presence. Take the class if you need it. Do the assignments & pass the exams to prove your academic ability. Subpar-below an average, usual, or normal level, quality, or the like; below par.
Would never take a class with him again. Never understood anything he was saying in his lectures and he says everything theoretically. The average grade for an exam was a 60 and there was no curve. I’m not one to do poorly in a class but I did in his and most of the class did too. Do not recommend, many people have dropped the class.
You can tell he really cares about this subject but sometimes it can be hard to pinpoint exactly what to remember for tests. He encourages student participation! The exams are accumulative and beware of the 5 page essay.
he's amazing!! i wish i could take more classes w/ him, he's really great!! he makes all of his lectures super interesting, even if you have no interest in sociology. he opens up an honest discussion about social class, racism, and real world issues! he really makes you think + the tests are super easy, you just have to pay attention in lecture lol
I loved his criminology class it was probably my favorite class of the semester. We talked about some really interesting topics, that being said attending class was important because test were lecture base only. You could really tell that the professor cared about the topics and having a discussion so be prepared for him to wait for participation.
I had this professor for two classes spring semester and he was better in the other. This class is new and everything seemed to be the same topic. Only 2 tests and quizzes every other week but attending lectures is important because he gives more info during lecture not included on slides.
His class is lecture heavy. Note taking and participation is key in his class! There are a few tests based on lectures and quizzes based on a book. Overall, a really interesting class that's not stressful at all. Because of his class, I grew an appreciation for sociology. I considered making it my minor! Go ahead and take him.
Hated this prof. He made what could've been simple concepts, very difficult to understand and is inconsistent in his lectures. Along with this he would ask us questions about concepts we had never even heard of until 30 seconds ago when he said it, and was annoyed and would just keep asking us questions when no one answered. Never taking him again.
Had him for Intro to Soc as well & he made exam reviews, so I recommend him for that course. For 3324, NO. I took him again because he is nice & is sometimes funny, but as a professor, it ruined my grade. SO many concepts & statistics, exams barely correlate. Also, he didn't make exam reviews. And you barely have grades so your exams matter a lot.
Take another professor if you can. He does not test review at all I think that is his major downfall other than that he is an okay teacher, his lectures are very long and gives a few assignments/quizzes. Offers extra credit but only for little points. Would not take him again
I learned to look at my life and others from the vantage point of society. There is so much useful information if you would just allow for an adjustment in perspective. He loves his job and I now love sociology.
Great class and a great professor. I highly recommend him.
I honestly barely tried/went to class and was successful in this course. Prof is very funny and passionate and makes me wish I went more lol
Professor Whitehawk is one of my favorite professors I've had so far. Lectures are interesting and engaging. He uses a textbook, but mainly for quiz grades. So long as you go to lectures, you will do fine. Offers "group-exams" for those who have perfect attendance in each topic.
Honestly I loved Mr. Whitehawk. He is so outgoing and just an overall fun teacher to be in class with. He also reminds me of pitbull, so that gave him a few extra points. In all realness, he was so sweet and is very passionate about his place of study.
my favorite class and professor so far, i loved this class so much he is so passionate about this subject and keeps the class engaged. i was never bored in his lectures, easy to follow and pay attention. tests are over lecture slides so just show up and you will do well.
Whitehawk is very quirky so his lectures are entertaining. Showing up to class is a major part of the class, you can take group exams for an average grade if you only miss a certain amount of days. He's very personable and eager to help. Would definitely recommend taking him!!
He has a strict attendance policy that does not excuse medical emergencies or deaths within the family. I was in the ER for 3 days with proper documentation and went to discuss my absence with him and his words were "Even if your parents were to die I wouldn't excuse your absence." Lectures are interesting and fun but I would not take him again.
awful, I took this class as an elective and he always drags out one slide into a whole lecture for the class with useless information and then rushes to give you all the information right before the test. Not a understanding teacher at all. Do not take.
Incapable of conveying material clearly. Dragged out his teaching over numerous mind numbing lectures, which mostly consisted of material that had absolutely no correlation to what we were tested over. Seems like a nice guy, but horrible teacher. Crammed all test material in one lecture right before exam. Overcomplicated simple ideas on purpose.
Professor uses his own opinions to teach. His own opinions are on the tests too. You won't learn much.
This professor allows for discussion to lead the course and Chapter topics. Often he will start with a controversial issue and then let people discuss it. Theres no moderation and often times it feels very uncomfortable.
Had him for SOCI1310 my freshman year. Didn't really like him then since he was super slow with the lecture and annoying with the questions he gave us like we were 12-year-olds. I have him now for criminology. I regret it with all of my being. really considering dropping his class because he acts just the same. one word to describe him? Ugh.
Professor Whitehawk is very passionate in what he talks about. Although it is a lecture class, he engages with students throughout his lectures. ALL of his tests are based entirely off of his lectures and what HE says in his lectures. He creates group tests after individual tests so you receive a better grade. gives LOTS of extra credit.
He knows what he is talking about when he is teaching and most importantly he is passionate about what he does. His lectures are always interesting and informative. Would recommend taking his class to absolutely anyone.
good teacher cares for his students till about the whole class fails the test which is lecture based, asks how he can fix it- every idea a student gave he turns it down. he does give extra credit. attendance not mandatory but if you don't miss class you get to take a group exam, however grades wont average if you get less then a 60 on your test.
If you don't intend to participate, this class is not for you. It's really important to engage in discussions in order to further your own learning and understand the material for this class. What he teaches is really important in understanding the world around us, and he gives good (albeit long) discussions on those aspects. Great class!
computers are only allowed in the 1-3 rows of the class, don't miss class if you want to take a group exam!, he lectures the whole class time
Most complicated professor I've ever had. rambles about irrelevant stuff all of class and covers incredibly boring material. says his outlines are "good study tools" but they're completely jumbled up with material that only 5-10% of is even on the exams. the outlines ended up just jacking up my grade. If I could take someone else, I would
He kinda makes you feel stupid for not knowing things or not participating
Rambles about irrelevant stuff all for all of class. States his outlines are good study tools but they aren't. the outlines only cover about 5 questions. the outlines ended up just messing up my grade. As well made class incredibly boring if you didn't get his nonsense of the day.
Whitehawk was a great professor! He is the perfect instructor for an introduction course. He repeats important information that may be hard to comprehend without being too repetitive. Make sure to show up to class to be eligible for the group exams because that was the reason I received an A in the class!
His lectures make absolutely no sense and are not useful for the exams. He rambles about controversial topics and encourages the students to talk about it, and his quizzes were difficult. I would not recommend this class to anyone, I'm sure any other professor would be better than him.
Easy class. You need to be in class because everything on the exam is what is talked about in class. Lots of extra credit. He has group exams so they may actually bring your grade down if you don't do good on the individual. Funn class!
This professor is awful. I am pretty good in school, I am not someone who falls easily behind. I failed this class by 4 points and he would not help me round up my grade even though I attended every class possible. Hes one of those professors that sit on one slide the whole entire class and just yaps. DON'T TAKE HIM, HES HORRIBLE!!!!!! save urself
obnoxious, loves to hear himself speak. Somehow made one of the most interesting classes annoying- gets distracted by students incredibly easily and often. I had a student in my class constantly talking—clearly for attention. Any good professor would know how to shut down these questions and obnoxious ploys for attention, but he leans into it!!
Don't take the class if you're not going to show up. The negative reviews are, I'm sure, from people who never went to class and/or never took notes when they did come. His class is pretty interesting and as long as you go, you'll be fine. He offers group exams which help A LOT if you don't really know what you're doing.
Whitehawk's lectures can be hit or miss, but try to engage with his system - it works if you put in the effort. The group exams are a great chance to boost your grade. I found Unstuck AI and the textbook really helpful for studying.
He is the worst professor I have ever had. He talks about topics that don't matter on tests or homework. One time, when there was maybe one person left taking a test in the room, I glanced down at my phone for one second, proceeded to call me out, made me step outside, and then told me I couldn't take the group exam. DON'T TAKE THIS GUY.
Whitehawk is definitely very interesting to listen to, but the outline of the course is not ideal. There are only two tests, one final, one written assignment, and nearly weekly reading quizzes that are unrelated to lecture material. The tests are entirely over lecture content, so having only two tests means they're usually crammed full of content.
Worst professor I've ever had. The lectures and study guides provided didn't help whatsoever when it came to his exams. This professor is also heavy on the no electronics policy during class and will call you out if he catches you using them during class. As someone who only missed two classes, I completely recommend avoiding him at all costs.
Great professor honestly. You NEED to be present for lectures because the power points don't go in depth on the material. If you go to class you should be fine. There are quizzes over the book chapters which are easy if you read. The book material is not on exams, its just lecture material.
Good lecturer and he's very willing to work with you outside of class. The only thing holding this course back is how few assignments there are. Make sure you go to every lecture so you can do the group exams, or one bad test will be very hard to recover from.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. His lectures are not interesting whatsoever and are VERY statistics heavy with very little actual substance. He gets way too off topic and entertains irrelevant conversations for half the lecture time. I did like his group exam policy and his grading was nice but I hated every single second of this class
An amazing professor that is passionate about what he teaches! Attendance is not mandatory but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. His group exams and attendance is fair, but this is not a blow off class. Studying and attendance are required, seeing how few grades he has, having one bad grade can knock you down FAST. Overall loved his class + enjoyed the material
WORST CLASS EVER!!!!!! HES IN SUPER HARD AND HIS TEST HAVE NTH TO DUE WITH THE LECTURES HE TALKS ABOUT. ONE QUESTION WAS " MR WHITEHAWK ONCE SAID" extremely hard and lecture based test!!! only 3 test and if you fail one, you fail the class. There is readings and quizzes on canvas but there all right. ALLL test in person. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Dr. Whitehawk's Social Stratification class is one of my favorite classes I have ever taken. He gives FANTASTIC lectures, so you won't want to miss class. Loved every second of class discussion and lectures. Although the grades are test heavy, he doesn't make them too tricky. Just show up to class, study, and you will be fine.
his lectures are very insightful and interesting. The exams aren't super difficult if you pay attention in class and use the unit outlines which basically tell you everything on the test. he also does a group exam and individual exam and averages the score which helps. gives a lot of extra credit. just go to class and take notes and you'll be good!
Whitehawk loves to yap. A lot. I think most of the lectures were him yapping about god knows what and then a small percentage is the actual lecture. The problem with this is NOTHING RETAINS. He lacks as an educator. HOWEVER, the group tests are the saving grace when it comes to your grade :)
He is passionate about his class, and it was a very interesting, fun class. There was a weekly writing and responding to classmates, but it was relatively easy as long as you didn't get behind. McGraw was used and can be a pain in the butt, but for a Summer class, it was a good class.
Not my favorite guy. Tests didn't seem super fair and were tough. He does offer extra credit though.
when i tell you my rating is generous. the only reason i gave him a 2 was because hes passionate about the subject. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. goes on offtopic tangents and tells jokes that shouldnt be told to any class... really weird vibe. yaps too damn much and reviews for tests were NO HELP. just more documents of brain dump.
The people that gave bad ratings probably are looking for an easy class w/quizlet.This is a great class that's informative & lecture heavy but that's because discussing in class is super important! Those that say he yaps too much clearly don't understand what SOCIOLOGY means. I mean wow your SOCIOLOGY teacher is weird because he likes to socialize?
Don't get me wrong he is somewhat good on he does he's very passionate about his job. However when I tell you he sets you up for failure for the test he does. Every time he wants you to write your notes he class he always skips mid way when everyone is trying to write the notes. Also the "stuff" gives to study for the exam is bs.
Literally just a boring class. Not hard at all, one short paper and a couple tests. There are online quizzes pretty much weekly that you have to read for or you won't pass. Other than that, not super hard but his lectures are attendance mandatory and super boring
Enjoyable professor, lectures are boring at times but if you have good attendance you can participate in group exams which always increase your exam grades. As long as you take notes and study from study guides it's pretty easy. There is a book to be read and weekly quizzes, they're a little harder but nothing crazy.
Show up to class! Group test if you do and all the test answers are in lecture. He also has many stories he loves to tell especially about his kids which does cause him to ramble sometimes but he's just very passionate when he talks.
Whoever says hes a good teacher is lying. He can never stay on topic with his lectures. If you fail one test, GOODLUCK getting your grade up. (Our class test average was never above a 80) 😭😭 And studying the outline and powerpoints does not help you at all. Test are designed for you to fail. If I could rate him a zero I wouldve.
Mind you I only missed one class and suddenly I have 5 absences? Also he sucks at teaching never gives you time to write the notes or anything don't get this guy. Oh and of course he's BALD.
