At the beginning of this course, he introduces the basic elements of accounting and the structure of statements. The second half of the course is heavily on booking (accounting). His lectures are very useful. Practice booking exercies is the key.
repetition is key for this class. do lots of practice problems.

He's a bit confusing and jumps all over the place. Don't take his class if you actually want to learn accounting techniques, it would help you become fluent in accounting practices. Unfortunately, he's the only the professor that teaches accounting @ ucsd
I work so hard but I just got a C-??? why.......
Taking notes is impossible to take in class and his tests are a lot harder than they look. Hate the bell curve grades. Our grades shouldn't be based on how other student do.
Arrogant, but also kind of funny. Jokes can be very inappropriate.
Really really good teacher. You just need to actually put some time and effort in this class to do well. Force yourself to go to office hours. Very good class if you actually want to learn something!
test not representative of material
First off, office hours help. The reading assigments (Liar's Poker is fun to read, no joke). Once you get the concept of bookkeeping down, the class is no sweat. Getting to that point however, is fairly tough. Stick with it, you'll get it.

The class was great, but he'd go off on tangents every so often. This guy seemed kind of sleezy. He had monogrammed everything, talked like a lawyer or a greedy I-banker.
one of the worst teacher ever.. he might be smart but it doesn't pay the bill!! he doesn't know how to teach.. you don't learn anything from the lecture except nasty jokes..
He covers 2 chapters in like 10 minutes and expects us to know everything. His daily quizzes are always random, and extra credits are awarded to the same students over and over again.
Tests not representitive of material in class, quizzes every class so you have to go, mostly based on minor details mentioned in previous lecture. Take really good notes, not too much of a curve.
Great Class! Useful and intensive! He teaches more than just technical stuff. If you actually go to his lecture, you can find out update information in the real world.
Class is very interesting although with the daily pop quizzes, the class can be a bit hard. If you attend lecture everytime and take notes, you'll do fine.
If you actually go to the class, it gets easier. At first, I had no idea what was going on, but by the end everything sort of came together. Go to office hours or find a friend to work with, and you'll be fine.
Great class, the ****es of ucsd will not like this class because econtutor won't help them out and looking for past exams won't help them out either. Begging for extra ponits won't help u out either. only teacher at ucsd that ever held my attention. thanks for the class
I loved this prof! The class was so easy, and he tells the funniest stories. He has a great butt too.
Lectures were out of synch with the reading but they were still informative. Quizzes and exams are based on the reading so you'll do good if you did the reading. Pop quizzes are easy, can be done in less than ten minutes of class time. Spends half the class telling personal stories and jokes.
Anyone who gets lower than a "B" in this class is a bona fide retard. The guy writes everything you need to know on the board and also posts it on the class website. The quizzes are alright and are there to test you if you actually have a brain. Easy class overall.
Free response/essay questions are very subjective, ambiguous and sometimes killers. Lectures are intense and fast-paced; make sure you keep up with reading for pop quizzes and stay awake in class. the TA's are great. Too many jokes and stories that i personally don't care about.
the material of this class isn't that interesting, but he's funny, enthusiastic, and cute~~!
This guy just seems really unlikable. Whether its his monogrammed shirts or random quizzes for his 8AM lecture, his class is quite annoying. He seems to enjoy throwing a ton of material at us without adequate explanations. His lectures could esily be condensed into 30 minutes without all his pauses.
What a waste. Spends most of his time inflating his own ego. Every class that I now take that has 120A as a prereq is that much harder b/c I have to learn everything he didn't teach. Usually unprepared and trips over his words. Easy material though, easy A if you can deal with his self-inflated ego.
soso professor. was expecting an easy A. but ended up stuck with pop quizzes and subjective free-response questions on exams..need to keep up with material. his jokes/stories totally irrelevant, just delays time to get the hell out..regrades fairly. argue w/ him and u'll get the points XD
If you don't know what egomaniac means, well take his class. He compensates his lack of ability to teach the course with his stories about himself. The material is simple, but this guy makes it very difficult.
The worst teacher I've had in years. Material is easy but he makes it very difficult by not being clear, he is never ready for the class lecture, does not know how to solve his own problems. Overall he is agood guy, but definitely a horrible teacher. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! Unless you have no other choice
Kind of a jerk, but responds very efficiently to emailed questions. Its hard to know what is going to be on quizes or tests becuase he fails to drive many points home. He made everyone in our class redo an essay cuz he didn't describe well enough what he wanted. Pissed me off bro!!!
Material WOULD BE fairly easy if not for his complicated teaching of it. Lecture not conducive to note taking, he writes numbers, erases them, and writes some more... ultimately ending in a convoluted mess. On the plus side, there is little reading required. However, DAILY pop quizzes make sure you know what was on p.37 line 8 of the reader...

Most of his class was poitless, but all the pop quizzes made me learn stuff. It did suck reading through my notes before my 8am class though.
Honestly, his lecture is a bit fast. But if you read before going to class you can learn a lot from his lecture. Most of them are applications of theories. These course are NOT rocket science. I had great experience with this professor.
This guy's a ****. He loves the ladies but his lectures suck, he just ****ing rambles about himself. He never explains anything and he blows dog turds.
Given, at first I thought the guy was a complete dick, but give him time and you learn that beyond the ego he is a fairly cool guy. Ask stupid questions or **** off during class and you will find yourself up faeces creek right quick, but read before class
I'd have to agree he does boast about himself quite a bit. He once spent about 20 minutes telling us a story about how one of his students wanted to hook him up with her mom and how he was more interested in the student. I learned absolutely nothing from that class partially my fault but he made the material 10 x's more confusing than it should be.
his lecture sucks!!!!!!!!!
Lectures were a waste of time, but had to go due to random pop quizzes. He always gave pop quiz day after exam just to be a d*ck. Quizzes sometimes super easy and other times way out of left field. For upper division, a pretty lightweight class with hardly any homework.
I took this class during the summer. He is a great prof. knows his material. EXTREMELY ADD, but aren't we all? Most useful class I have taken as a whole.
If you ever get the chance to talk to him out of class, do it! He's amazing and by far my favorite professor at UCSD. His teaching style is a little unorganized and he goes on a whim, but he's brilliant and if you get to know him he gives great recommendations and not to mention advice.
This guy loves himself. The lecture is a summary of his pathetic life. He will let you know why he got divorce, or why his son is at SDSU, he will also let you know his son’s techniques to get chicks, or how SDSU is less than UCSD academically, though he teaches out there. I bet he tells the same crap to SDSU students. What a f***ing guy! Get ready

Had him for three classes. Comes off arrogant at first, but keeps lectures interesting. Knows alot about finance and loves talking outside of class. Not to mention he actually speaks a language we can understand unlike most Econ profs at UCSD. Definitely take him if you get the chance.

Strange way of teaching. Unorganized. Not too hard though
What a torture. Extremely unorginized lecture, gives pop quizes (24% of grade) to make you come to lecture so he can make easy material confusing. I heard the other 120A prof is much better. Avoid this guy!!!
This teacher is a real jacka ss. Never explains anything and when he does give an example, 9/10 times he usually messes it up. Lecture is a waste of time, but must come for quizzes, which is sometimes on new material that he writes on the board just b4 the quiz starts...I don't kno how he is for Econ 4, but avoid for 120a.Trust don't take .
This guy finds a way to make even the simplest problems confusing. He has a strange method of teaching and sometimes it works, such as in econ 4, but definitely not in statstics. Avoid this guy.
Horrible teacher. Think very highly of himself.t('_'t) Makes simple mathematic errors. His lectures and text are WORTHLESS, you are better off reading the SAT Statistics prep book. The only reason why people go to his class is because of his pop quizzes every week,**WARNING: there will be one the day after the midterm** ... Avoid him at all cost.
His way of teaching is very confusing. I think he is a great investor but not the best teacher. Has quizzes all the time and sometimes about totally useless things like yesterdays price of Starbucks stock. You feel never save because he always surprises you. However, his jokes are really funny.
he has his own method of teaching, but it works. pop quizes are easy if you scan through the chapter being going to class. He's very helpful outside of class, so go see him, and you'll do good. His curves are very generous. I would take him again.
he's really full of himself and pretty confusing. He thinks that what he is teaching is easy adn its not at all. His reading doesn't really cover the lectures and his midterm covered stuff we hadn't covered yet. His curve is pretty good. He's good if you're really into the class. Otherwise I don't advise taking him.
This class sucks! Class started at 8.am. I have to woke up at 7am to get there to take his POP quizzz... if u don't like to go to lecture, u will have a hard time to pass this class. 25%-pop quiz, 40%final, 10%book report, 25%midtern. I end up with a D in his class due to his morning pop quizzzzz....
worst teacher ever. he has a stick up his ass and makes you feel like a dumbshit every day. he gives pop quizzes all the time and they are completely irrelevant to the material. this guys is HORRIBLE. avoid him at ALL COSTS. you will die and his reader is the biggest bull crap ever. he makes no ese and constantly contradicts himself. DONT TAKE HIM!
Very helpful in person.
easy class made hard. uses abbreviations without explaining first what they stand for. funny, but confusing. pop quizzes start off ez then get harder. impossible to take notes. for the midterm, write out your own balance sheet with the abbreviations he uses in class, and the different names of the same thing his reader, and in the text.
He was really confusing. His class is way too early, and I've met people who took him 4 years ago, and apparently it's been that way for a long time. Attendance is practically mandatory because of his pop quizzes. His lectures didn't facilitate note taking. And he was arrogant and blamed the class whenever he made mistakes on the board.
Honestly the worst professor I have had here at UCSD. He has little to NO respect for his students and really has no interest in the students' learning. He was extremely Unclear about due dates and exam covered on materials. His Final was EXTREMELY hard. He only gave 6 As in the class of like 200 and Failed a LARGE number of people. Dont do it!!!
Easy class made hard due to lack of structure. Accounting is really quite simple, but he makes it confusing by giving it to you in micropieces at a time, all out of order. Also, wtf is up with our textbook "accounting for dummies"? is this UCSD or some vocational school?
He sucks. Honestly, do not take him. If you have to take him to be a management science major, switch to econ, and avoid him because you will not do well in his class. He's unorganized, unclear, doesn't care about his students learning, and gives unbelievably hard tests. Dont take him
The worst teacher ever!! The class is not hard, he makes it hard, you must go to the TAs discussion to understand the class. Best of luck, but avoid at any cost!!!
He is extremely arrogant and inconsiderate. He doesn't care about our time. Its now the third class day, and the first day he didn't show up, without emailing before hand. The second day it took 43 minutes of 80 to get past that we should be accountants b/c of the money, today, was 37 minutes on a quiz that didn't give enough time per question.

Well, I got a C so I'm content. He could've done a lot of things better... but it's a little too late now.
Change your major...dont take him
Kiss good-bye to your dream of earning A or B
Ok heres the thing. Hes actually a great teacher, very interesting. Course material is quite easy. The problem is that hes a jerk. He will not teach you everything you need to know prior to the test or quizzes. Hes quite vague in his descriptions on how to do the homework and very very picky in grading. He comes off as a nice teacher, but he sucks.
I started to take this class last year, but dropped it. I took it this quarter, and boy has he changed! (for the better) He uses useful slides that he posts online. He's super clear about what's going to be on the quizzes. I did super badly on the final, but I still managed to get an A- minus in the class. He gave 29 As and A-s this quarter
Nice guy, always trying to find you ways to become one of the boys in new york. I respect him. I am his slave for the rest of my life. I will never as great as him. No, yes i will.
Tests are hard but if you keep track of the ppt materials, you'll get an A. Though tests are hard, average score is low. Instruction is intended to be vague, yet practicing the ppt example gives a clearer idea of wts going on.
I'm told he is a lot better than he used to be. Pretty scary thought, seeing as how he's one of the worst professors I've had at UCSD. Unclear and vague lectures. Irrelevant homework. Ego the size of Everest. If the material was any more difficult than addition and following directions, we'd all be screwed.
I glory'd his class with no prior knowledge. He's a great professor, but don't expect to be able to rely on a book for all the answers to your problems. You have to work to understand the material and be genuinely prepared for the class. "The more we sweat in practice, the less we bleed on the battlefield" sums this class up & is his personal motto
I haven't completely finished the course yet, but he's not bad. He does leave out some possibilities in his lectures, but who can blame him if nobody asks. IMO, he's not that hard. The class average is fairly high. You have to go to lecture and understand what he's doing though. He lectures different from the texts, and tests are most lecture based
Took this class out of interest for possible future interest in business school.. Partner quizzes, cheat BINDER for midterm/Final. Class entirely curved- final grade based on overall ranking. Guy's actually pretty funny. Don't buy books. I've gone to class, don't really listen, didn't buy book and got 78 on midterm. Easliy getting a Pass.
"The more you bleed in practice, the less you'll bleed on the battlefield", Willoughby loves this quote. This quote gives me strength to study until my arm is about to fall off. He's helpful and friendly in office hours as long as you make an effort. He's incredibly intelligent & a great resource if you're thinking about entering into finance.
All you haters need to lay off. Willoughby and Foster teach pretty much the only useful classes you'd get coming out of UCSD manag sci or econ. Econ 4, as basic as it is, is extremely useful for entry level jobs in finance. Its a refreshing change from all the useless theories in all the normal econ classes.
whole class is memorization of terms the first 2 classes, and adding/subtracting the rest of the classes. attendence required. partner quizzes, open note tests. pay attention in class. you must learn all material through his 1 or 2 examples. if youre not a quick learner, youre screwed. very easy class. take it :)
Dude, so this class completely depends on you ranking relative to the rest of the class. Its hard, but if you do well on the quizes and midterm you will at least get a B. Make sure you are at a solid A before the final, because it WILL destroy everyones grades. Expect many people to drop the class and the avg to spike at a 85 around the final.
So this prof is insane. The class is hard, but if you do well on the quizes you will have a good grade. I kept an A until the final. Make sure u have around a 95 before the final. Not one person actually passes the final. 51 was the highest. Curved the class and i got a B+ and i had a 72%
The previous guys who gave him a happy face have no lives. This prof is INSANE. The only way you can pass is by bsing his quizzes and loading every one of them into a "kit" that you can use for your final. Puts completely irrelevant questions on the final. However, everybody did bad so i came out with a B with my 41% final grade. Learned nothing.
This professor is completed useless. He goes on babbling about his ex wife and shows off to the whole class about how important he is.He tries to intimidate you, don't let it get to you. GO TO EVERY LECTURE!Unfortunately, he tests you sometimes on things you didn't study on before.Just know that his arrogance doesn't mean squat. He's a loser.
Loser. Mopes about his ex-wife.
good professor...i recommend this class to every ucsd student who wants to learn about basic accounting...like the previous post, foster E173, 174, 178 and willoughby are the best...also watson E109, Cohen E111, Ramey E130, and Elliot E120A. Steer clear of any new graduate student lecturers. Don't expect much from 110 prof's or lecturers either.
good teacher
WORST professor ever. He doesn't use a microphone so he's barely audible. He quizzes you on things that he taught last minute and he doesn't teach it thoroughly. 3 hour class, once a week. I'm not learning, just trying to get by.
One of the most polarizing professors on campus. You'll either love him or hate him. He changes the format of his course each quarter, sometimes grading everything and others just grading exams. Given that his curve guarantees 50% C's or lower and the material is pretty easy, study hard and expect an insane final.
This is definitely not the most important course you can take at UC San Diego. It is just a watered down ELEM/ACCT course. He doesn't even cover debit/credit which is the core of accounting. To get a solid understanding of ACCT, take ACCT-1 at Extension first, and then enroll in Econ 4. If you do this, you can just sit back and watch the circus
He was a good teacher. You learn a lot about accounting if this was a new subject to you. Attendance is not mandatory but there is a quiz every week so if you don't go you are not going to do well in the class. If you pay attention, read his manual, and do a lot of prac. problems you should do okay.
He seems nice but he's a devil and tricky jerk. Screwed everyone over on the midterm By saying the answer was this before the test but when you see the answer key the answer he gave us was wrong likes the option E on his tests [A LOT]
He is one of the worst teachers I have EVER HAD! He barely even teaches you anything! He just says "You have to know this and that" and he doesn't even go over some of what he put on his tests. and he LITERALLY TRICKS YOU! Don't take him if you really want to learn Accounting!
Yeah he's kinda mean to students, but I personally found it hilarious. Only gave us 80min for the final though and everyone was wishing for more time.
One of the worst professors. Don't take him if you really want to learn accounting! 80mins for the final when everyone needed more time (even though it says 3 hours).
Willoughby is NOT a bad professor, you just have to adjust and work with his teaching method. I thought his lectures are completely imcomprehensible at first, along with many fellow classmates. The trick is to read through the coursepack and his slides carefully. Practice doing financial worksheets etc and GO TO TA/ office hours. THIS IS CRUICIAL
Worst professor in UCSD. He suz. His lecture distracts you a lot. He gave us 80-min final without notification. He hided some difficult materials and those will be on the final. He is not willing to answer students' questions. My suggestion is to take an equilivant course in other colleges if possible.
Said he would give the top 20% of the class an A/A- but in reality only top 13% or so got A's. The final was hard and not possible to complete within the time limit (80 mins) that he gave us.
This class was actually very straight forward compared to all the other econ classes I've taken at UCSD. All his quizzes are extremely straight forward, his take home midterms can be easily looked up on the computer, but his final was brutal. Your final grade basicall depends on how lucky you are on the final exam.
You won't do well in his class if you don't go to class because he requires participation (10%). He has a take home midterm, some projects, weekly quizzes and the final exam. Willoughby is not a bad professor. In fact he'll show you how hard it is to get an A or decent grade in UCSD.People are simply too competitive that it'll be hard to get A. Gl
He's a ****. He can't teach at all and the way his tests are formatted is retarded. He's also kind of an ****.
Willoughby is a HORRIBLE professor. His grading style for certain assignments is unfair for students. Attendance is crucial-he gives out participation points every day some of which you have to answer the most unrelated, unfair questions. Gives out points to those who can do a prob fastest & the rest wont get those points, which lowers their score.
Prof. Willoughby is a pretty crappy instructor, but I had gotten pretty used to bad professors by the time I took his class. The worst was that he is incredibly rude! In class and through emails he always has this arrogance about him. His response to my emails were in all-caps and just insolent and unhelpful.
Practice the quizzes and go in for office hours. His class was interesting because he is a strong speaker. Pay very close attention in class and actually go to class for participation points. GO TO OFFICE HOURS! just do it.
Prof. Willoughby is an excellent teacher. While yes, his teaching style may be difficult to adjust to at first but it's adaptable. I had an internship and the corporate culture there is exactly the same in his lectures. Which is strict, put in the effort for the output you want and most importantly- THINK. Gr8 prep class for real biz environment.
A really bad professor. He makes the material harder than it seems and he's really just a plain jerk!
The trick to Professor Willoughby? Get to know him. He's an amazing person. Not necessarily your best lecturer, but if you go into office hours I guarantee you will be fine.
Excellent speaker and teacher. Makes a subject like accounting more interesting. The final will screw you over so watch out for that by doing well on midterms, and practice your quizzes over and over again. Pay very close to whatever he says in class, he's fast but if you look over your notes, everything else is much easier.
this professor is ridiculous. class was easy up until the final. final was basically impossible to ace because he asked questions he never went over. do your hw, go to class, and when he says you don't have to show up to class for a movie he's going to show, you better go because he'll put questions about it on the final. ridiculous.
most ridiculous professor. partner quizzes are doable. but dont be fooled, the final is impossible and will make or break you. if you want to listen to an arrogant ass, he's your man.
You may be intimidated by Prof. Willoughby on the first day of class. However, if you show effort and really want to learn the subject, you can learn a lot from him. Yes, it is hard to get an easy A from him. Yet, you will appreciate that he helped you build a strong foundation of finance. One of my favorite profs at UCSD!
Prof. Willoughby can be intimidating on the first day of class. Yes, it is hard to get an easy A. Your going to have to earn it in this class. One of my favorite profs at UCSD! He is a must take at UCSD! Amazing Professor.
He is a hard professor no wonders. He may confuse students sometimes but he really helps to build up professional nicely. He is a humorous guy and a helpful teacher in the way to let you know things about career.
One of the hardest teachers I've taken so far. Very challenging class but it's really worth it in the end. He seems like he doesn't care but if you take the time to come to his office hours and get to know him, he's a really helpful professor with a lot of insightful advice. TAKE HIM IF YOU'RE DOING ECON. Don't opt out because you're scared!!
Really nice and helpful during office hours.
The class was very hard, but if you take time to attend office hours it really helps. As many have previously stated, his final are really hard, and it will make or break you.
Worth taking, you learn more than just basic accounting. Attending office hours is key to surviving this course. The professor is willing to help if you just ask.
Seems pretty chill in the summer. I don't get what all the complaints are about.
The material isn't difficult to understand, but Willoughby just thoroughly enjoys throwing curveballs to spread out the grade distribution. Office hours are recommended, he gives a lot of test info there.
People. Just take the class, don't chicken out. Not as bad as it seems and willoughby provides helpful advice, referrals.
The class was surprisingly enjoyable. He has many entertaining stories so lecture was bearable. He definitely loves to throw curveballs to challenge the students because he wants us to learn, not memorize. Everything is in the reader. Lots of practice + office hours time and you're set.
Willoughby isn't as bad as all the reviews cut him out to be but he makes the class way more difficult than it needs to be because it's better for students "to sweat in class than bleed in the real world". He made me change my mind about an accounting minor.
If you want to learn accounting, take. If you just want an easy A and not learn anything, then don't take. It's that simple.
Very arrogant. He think he is all that but honestly he just acts that way and some people treat him that way because of it. He tries to create this group of elites among his students even though half of those students in the group dislikes him. Does not know how to lecture and blame it on to the students for doing badly.
Student commentator below is clearly insecure. Arrogance that can be backed up is called confidence. The class is difficult, yes. But it's not impossible to succeed in it with hard work and extra office hours. And he is willing to help and explain things if you go. Don't be intimidated. He wants his students to succeed.
student commentator below does not get the difference between arrogance and confidence. An arrogant person only feels smart if someone else feels stupid. A confident person feels competent from the inside out. They use their talents to genuinely try to be of use, or to succeed at the task at hand. Willoughby is one of the most arrogant people.
Willoughby helps countless students. He helped me find an internship, wrote a rec letter for my friend (who got accepted), referred my TA to her current employer etc. People are so quick to pass judgement if someone does something they don't like. His manner tends to rub some people the wrong way. But he does care about his students.
we got bubbly after finals so I forgive everything.
Mixed feelings about this class. But there's only one choice of instructor so it's this, community college or mgt45
attending class is highly recommended: get participation points if you get problems right, he tells you what's going to be on exams, and he might even include a question on a midterm about what he said in class; check the course website everyday; all exams are open-reader but read everything carefully
Usually people like him or hate him. Honestly he is nice! GO TO OFFICE HOUR AND ASK QUESTIONS!! Also, on the exams, remember that there is always a choice"E", none of the above. That's why I got an average score on midterm 1 and only have an A- in the class. True that getting an A/A- is not easy. PUT EFFORT!!
Intimidating at first, but he's approachable (especially in office hours). I enjoyed the challenge of the class and was motivated to come to lecture. TAs were very nice too.
Be prepared for hard work and lots of office hours. It's better to go to the prof's office hours versus the TA's. you have to check the calendar as it tends to change.
happy it's over
He is a responsible professor. He is the only one teaching Econ4 anyway. If you want to do well, put effort and go to his OH.
Office hours very helpful for understanding the course. Practice practice practice, redo homework and quizzes to master concepts.
If you can avoid it, don't take Him. He makes learning harder than it has to be and he wrote the textbook which is almost as unhelpful and confusing as he is. He makes up rules for him class the he never explicitly says and the penalizes his students for not reading his mind. Absolutely the worst professor I have ever had and the worst class too.
Challenging class but worth the effort. Good, solid skills that are useful. Also, I'm glad he actually cares about cheating.
When in doubt, ask questions, go to office hours and try to get to know him. Seems more sympathetic to students he can actually recognize.
Interesting professor. the class was very hard but it's doable. If you can, take mgt45 with Pecore which will satisfy both econ4 and mgt5 for the minor requirements.
I actually like the reader. All the terms are clearly defined and it's more condensed than other accounting textbooks. At least you don't have to shell out $100+ for a book you're only using one quarter.
the reader sucks. you have to go to his office hour, because he test his quiz based on the material he told during office hour, not based on lecture. this course will consume you a lot of time. Definitely recommend to take mgt45 instead
Not gonna lie, this class was hard. But like with anything, if you put enough effort into it, you will get results. Office hours!!!!!
Worst professor I've taken at this school. The reader is useless and the class is terribly organized. Info isn't portrayed through his website and quiz solutions are taken down before they can even be fully understood. He makes this class so much more difficult than it should be. Also he refused to wear a mic and is inaudible most lectures.
Was thinking about accounting as a career. After this class, I hate the idea of accounting. Teacher not good, textbook is his own and honestly the most confusing textbook I have ever read. I read online info to try and prepare, and it was clear, but not even close to his book. His test was ridiculous. It's too bad he is the only option at UCSD.
My advice for anyone taking this now is to be vocal. In other words, if you can't understand him, tell him. He is very approachable, don't be intimidated. He helps those who show a sincere desire to learn. IT IS HIS JOB to teach and to help. Maximize all your resources (TAs, office hours, emails), and you will make it through this class.
THE best professor i had so far in UCSD!If you don't pay attention in class, you are screwed because that's the only way you could learn.Reading the packet yourself at home won't help.He offers you free A- garanteed chances once in a while.I got an A+ at the end.Super easy and fun class. If you fall behind,go to his office hours!you have to follow up
Those who left low rate on this professor must have failed because they didn't work hard. This is a actually pretty easy class if you pay close attention to his lecture. If you learned good in class, you don't need to do much work at home. However,if you fall behind it's hard to catch up by home study though. Go to his office hour and you will succeed
He is the only professor in Econ4, so u cannot aviod him. This course is not hard, but it requires u to read a lot through the textbook. He starts from Chapter 5 when he begings the class and requires u to read all before Chp.5. He doesn't explain materials clearly. He talks so fast. Its hard for international students first taking this class.
confusing and useless class. I really dont understand how UCSD still lets him teach this course bc I'm sure majority of the students learned nothing. I passed the class so im not saying this out of spite. take econ 45, heard the prof is much better.
Although he may know a lot about how accounting works, he is not in the right place to teach. He has lectures that are completely unrelated to the material, lacks the ability to explain exercises, and assumes that everyone gets the material. I recommend taking this class at another campus for transfer credit.
If you don't understand the material, just go to office hours. It's that simple. I took ECON4 during freshman year because I listened in lecture, studied, and went to office hours. I also established a good relationship with the professor too; I still stop by to talk to him once in a while and he has amazing stories and gives great advice.
I am doing you all a favor when I say, do not take this professor. I was told these were one of those professors "you couldn't win with," ignored it, and they were right. No matter how hard you study he will always find some way to screw you over on the test. His teaching style is so unconventional, and lack serious clarity and organization.
Everyone who claims this class is very hard clearly did not read the reader. You can either prepare first by reading the reader before lecture or you can even just cram a few days before the midterms, and you should be fine. Tests are open reader and notes (write them in reader). Willoughby himself is a fun guy, keeps lectures fun.
Prof. Willoughby brings a lot of energy to class, which helps keep lecture engaging. However, he moves incredibly fast and I could hardly keep up with him in class. Also be warned, his final was absurd, to say the least. I was following the material decently well up to that point, and then this class had me lost at the end.
if you are taking this class to get a feel of accounting, don't take him. He makes no sense in lectures and his reader is absolutely useless. He jumps from chapters to chapters without letting you know. Honestly, if you are like me and you are trying to see if accountng is your thing! dont take him!!!! he will ruin it for you
attendance is mandatory and the reader is necessary for the class (and you can use it on the midterm/final). Honestly, i didnt do well in the class. not sure if it was because he went over topics quickly and i could not grasp it. (his reader lacks multiple examples). But I do agree with him when he says, that you need to practice it over and over.
Yes his class was difficult, but it was not impossible. You have to put in a lot of work, go to his TA's office hours but with accounting once it clicks it clicks. Lectures are confusing, but understandable if you went on Youtube before hand. *Know your reader! It's open book b/c of details! DONT THINK NEGATIVELY. IF OTHERS CAN DO IT, YOU CAN TOO!
The teacher makes the class a lot more confusing than it has to be. The class will be a lot simpler if you just make T-chart for every accounts. He just assumes that you remember where all the numbers go and by doing so he also makes a lot of arithmetic errors.
Just understand the cases of Thai me up and Ugly Puppy, the other materials are more like definitions. Reader is your most important reference, so better read it through. Exams may cover things he'd never talked about. Be prepared for class and you may get an A- guarantee.
I thought I had a good command on the material, went into the final with an A, ended up getting a C in the class. I really have nothing more to say, other than this was probably the most frustrating class I have ever taken at UCSD (for several reasons), and if you can avoid this professor, you should.
One of the most bizarre professors. But one of my favorites too. Glad that I met him.
Professor Willoughby is my favorite professor at UCSD! Taking Econ 4 was one of my best choice in college. He was not only friendly but also inspiring. For his class, getting and A and C is definitely a personal choice. If you go to class and find him at office hour, you will not only learn about financial accounting but also many life lessons.
Very helpful professor. His style is harder to follow, but his one of the coolest and funniest professor on campus.
Prof Willoughby is a brilliant professor. He makes sure that no students are left behind and really makes an effort to present the material clearly. He cares about his students. He is by far my favorite professor and is my mentor til this day. The material I learned from his classes helped me a lot in my first job after graduation.
Only class I know that brings in professionals to speak about their finance careers, how they chose them, and how they acquired their jobs. Very useful and practical class, Willoughby does everything he can to bring these networking opportunities to us even spending his own money to treat them after class so we can talk to them for even longer.
Prof Willoughby is very helpful and personalized with the students that take interest in him, and he backs them for everything they do. I am currently working on Wall Street and he has played a pivotal role for me getting there. His class is very practical to the current market and not entirely bookish like other econ courses at UCSD.
Challenging class, no doubt. Go to OH, get to know him & TAs. If it seems like he's picking on you, he's not. It means he likes you (a good thing!). People misunderstand him, his teaching style, jokes. There is no malicious intent. Lighten up. Get to know him (I say this for all instructors, get to know them). You'll be better for it.
You get what you give. Stay focused, go to OH, study hard, and practice repeatedly. Accounting is repetitious. This professor is intimidating, but I took it as a challenge and worked harder. Rank system breeds competition. His methods are unique, to say the least, but you will never forget the material. Single most useful class I took at UCSD.
Prof W challenges you but provides a safe setting to learn from mistakes.“The more you sweat in training the less you bleed in battle”. He doesn't try to screw you over, he’s training you. He goes out of his way to provide support in and out of the classroom. There’s a reason students keep in touch for decades, put in your fair share it's worth it.
There are a lot of professors I like at UCSD, but he was the only one that taught me how to win in the real world. He taught me how little things that most of us were not aware of could make a big difference in the professional world. He is very approachable and gives very constructive advice. Take him and go to OH if you want to be street smart.
Very practical lab to take. Can be combined with 198 to satisfy UD requirement. You learn finance terminology in a fun, relaxed setting while networking with professionals Prof brings in. Opportunity to participate in CFA challenge, he is heavily involved in mentoring. Interesting guy but you can tell he's passionate about what he does.
This class basically destroyed me, although I tried very hard and went to office hours. But I gained a pretty cool friend in Professor Willoughby. It's very rare for professor to make friends with his student. So although I did not receive the grade I wanted, I think I still gained a lot from the class. But this class is not easy!
Prof Ws class was a life changing experience. He was the most influential prof I had the pleasure of taking at SD. He will give you a professional mindset, and you'll develop a skill set in accounting. Both will be invaluable in what you choose to do in the future. Incredibly approachable as well. Go to OH. He wrote me an excellent recommendation
Difficult class but you will get a solid foundation for the rest of your accounting courses. Like what everyone else says, go to OH and keep practicing. It is doable, and he is a pretty cool guy once you get to know him. Not for people who are easily offended, but it does prepare you for the real world where people aren't always going to be PC.
If you are intelligent and hard-working, take this class. If you are not intelligent and lazy, then do not expect neither life nor this class to give you anything easily. Willoughby will teach you some very hard life and accounting lessons. Be prepared.
The most fun and intriguing professor I have had yet. Every day, class is interesting, and professor makes a lot of clever analogies to make parallels to easily understand the concepts. Definetly recommend going to OH...you can clear up concepts you don't understand and get to know the extremely intelligent, helpful and professional professor.
Probably one of the most underrated Professor at UCSD. He keeps his classes interesting, and genuinely tries to help his students. Definitely not the easiest class because financial accounting is new to most who take it with Willoughby, but if you do not take for granted that it is an open-reader exam; not only will you do well, youll learn a lot.
I would avoid taking Professor Willoughby at all costs. Yes, a lot of people say he was a great professor because he was, but teaching wise I wouldn't recommend him. He assumes everybody knows what he's talking about, and forgets that some people are walking in with no background. He does not clarify or teach well. I do NOT recommend him.
There's a lot of reading. Most of the time he just talks about historical facts but doesn't actually teach it. You will be confused most of the time. He doesn't use blackboard and his due dates are a little confusing. He's really nice and definitely inspires me but I personally think he all over the place.
Things have to know:1 the definition of each item on the balance sheet 2 T account( how to say(drcr) temppermenant account)3Difference between :long lived asset and expense; revenue and gains;temporary account and permanent account. He gives two guaranteed A-(get that at ALL costs, just dont get caught), however very tricky with irrelevant info.
Good professor and I learned a lot. However, his exams are extremely hard. no curve at all. Gives out a lot of terms and expects people to have some sort of accounting knowledge before coming to the class. OK professor.
A good teacher, but he expects the best from you and he expects you to try. The course reader is very important, get to know it very well because it is necessary for every assignment and test. Go to class to get extra credit and get to know him. Become friends with him because he is a good mentor and helpful in steering you to an economics career
This professor is hit or miss. People either love him or hate him. His teaching style really wasn't a good match for me. It didn't help that he often seemed pompous and condescending to others. He takes attendance, so make sure you don't skip. He went a little to fast, and I had a hard time understanding things. The key to an A is PRACTICE!!!!!!
He is tough, especially if you don't pay close attention. Make sure to practice, and office hours are a good idea. Lectures are FAST PACED and tend to end early. There is an A- guarantee for extra credit. The reader is your life. Take it to every lecture and write in it. He may be tough but you will understand accounting if you work hard.
The mid-terms were easy compared to the finals. Paying attention in lessons and reviewing lecture material afterwards are key to securing an 'A'. Even though exams are open book, it pays well to know the material by heart. Use the A- guarantee to your advantage.
Willoughby is THE BEST professor ever. His tests are really straight forwards and they totally reflect the textbook. The textbook itself is not boring, Willoughby writes it. He also gives a lot of credit opportunities in class. All you have to do is participate!! I earned a lot of extra credit by participating. Highly recommended class.
Lectures are not that helpful, though he takes participation and quiz almost every day. Make sure you are really familiar with textbook, and you will be fine.
He's a very cool guy, tells funny stories in class about his family and career. Lecture isn't too useful (should do more examples); reader will be your life. Some questions on the final will be strange (specifics on nordstrom). Tiny details are very important. I like his attitude towards class participation, it beats mindlessly just clicking in.
He is pretty confusing if you aren't familiar with accounting. Get ready to use the reader a lot and do your own research. Participation matters a good deal. Go to his office hours and try to have a good relationship with him.
Seems a cool guy. But his class is terrible. The worst thing is, he made you buy his own book but it's not clear at all. It's extremely concise thus unclear. Lectures not clear neither. Not so hard to get A-, but I'm not a fan of his style. Recommend waiting for another professor if possible.
He is professional and nice, but the way he teaches is extremely confusing for beginners. You HAVE TO spend LOTS LOTS LOTS of time reading textbook and studying by yourself. He doesn't have a detailed schedule, so you need to read half of the book before the second week to be prepared. Don't take this class if you've already had three or four clas
He is not the worst professor, but he is the worst professor I had for a grade 3/3/2 on this web. His lecture is just as unclear as his reader. Avoid at all cost
Not too bad, but he doesn't make the concepts super clear. The reader is better than his lectures. His personality is insufferable, he is so in love with himself and loves to share personal anecdotes and is casually condescending to students. Not in a malicious way, just in a clueless way. Probably requires attendance because he likes an audience.
Don't take this class unless you have to. Unclear lectures, starts talking about bs sometimes and just throws you off. Get ready to teach yourself, TA's are helpful if you ask the right questions. Gives off a vibe that he's too good for this class, almost like he doesn't take it seriously enough. Tests will try to trick you and keep you guessing.
This professor does not know how to teach. He teaches nothing to students. The only thing he does is to talk irrelevant and useless words.
I took this class to gain skills, not for a letter grade (got a P). Lectures are bizarre, rambling, and incoherent. The participation system and random A- insurance pop quizzes are nonsensical. I left most classes wondering "what just happened?". Tests are open book, but that doesn't mean much, because its a meandering hodgepodge of words.
Willoughby is a smart guy and he knows it. He will teach you more than any other professor in the Econ department if you can suck it up. He can upset students sometimes because he doesn't coddle them and it's great because the real world isn't going to coddle you. Definitely taking extra classes just for him. Lecture hold your attention for sure
He is the worst professor ,do not know how to teach. His notes are super messy and not clear . Avoid to take his class .
Truly one of the worst professors I've had. If you're a beginner to accounting you're going to spend a lot of time learning the stuff on your own. His lecture style and notes are incoherent (definitely doesn't know how to teach). On top of that, he's mad some pretty misogynistic and inappropriate jokes in class.
Even though it's a intro class, best finance class I took during my time at UCSD. Does he spoon feed everything to you? No. Do you have to do a little supplemental learning on the side? Yes. Hmmm... sounds like what you have to do in an actual job. Also, he's hilarious. Take this class.
I gave a four b/c I did fine, but I probably won't take his class again. His class is fun and challenging, I felt I learned a lot. I understand he tried to make the class more interesting by giving the insurance staffs, but I preferred easier and more straight-forward professors. Anyway, I'm done with his class.
His lectures are not well organized and aren't very clear. The textbook is also written by him, so it's also not very clear. He offers A- guarantee pop quizzes which are not too difficult, but you don't have much time to do them. His midterms are relatively easier than his final and he only gave us 1 hour and 15 minutes. I wouldn't recommend him.
Worst professor forever!!! No homework, No practice questions, and only one sucky reader which is edited by him!!! Doubtlessly Econ 4 is hard, and it's so hard to make progress with a bad professor.
It's hella eazy with minimal homework assignment. I can complete the midterms in 30 minutes and score just fine enough to get A. Final is optional if you make it to No.1 in the ladder.
A great guy. He knows basically everything in this field and gives great instruction. A professor who teaches beyond textbook.
I'll start off by saying, is this class hard, it difficult because he is a terrible instructor. He is a good guy, but horrible instructor! In 10 weeks you don't actually start learning anything useful intil you hit week 5/6. Wish there was alternative class to take (i.e MGT 45)
Everybody I talked to in class did NOT like him. that's literally 90% of the people who came to class because they were stupid enough to take this class for grade. Very confusing and did not respect students at all.
He has a course reader that was very confusing to understand, so even though we could use it during exams it didn't make much of a difference. He is a bit condescending and creates a competitive atmosphere by ranking his students. The final is practically impossible and worth 50% of your grade. Don't take him.
Don't get me wrong, he knows the material in his field really well. It's just that, the way he lectures may be a bit challenging. He writes everything on the chalkboard; and it's pretty small so I recommend sitting near the front. The reader does help you understand the material. BE SURE TO BE UP TO DATE WITH NORDSTROM, he's a big fan!
His tests are TOO DIFFICULT especially the FINAL. The lecture could get boring because he sometimes goes off topic from the lecture. His class is unorganized and I learned much by making notes on his reader (which you can use for midterm and final). However, very generous on his grading scale as 80% could get you an A-!
The most hateful thing about a textbook is saying a bunch of abstract stuff without giving an example. He does it throughout the reader. And he makes everybody buy his new reader every quarter with maybe just some slightly changes in words or order. He is a merchant rather than a teacher.
Willoughby was scary, to begin with, and his reliance on participation points and a crazy competitive grading scale made the class seem very hostile. He teaches good information, especially since it is an intro class. One crossword puzzle quiz, an open-book partner midterm and an open-book final (really difficult though). Good luck!
He is the best professor I have ever met. Many students here said it was poor, but i thinks it was because they did not even read the textbook at all. If you just focus on his lecture and study regularly, this class will be really easy. I just read the textbook, focused on his lecture, and studied with his slides. Finally, I got an A on this class.
He spent a huge chunk of the class time rambling on useless stuff. I deeply regret spending 34 bucks on the "required" textbook because it was just as aimless as his lecture. And it was written by him. And please don't brag about doing 3 or 4 digits subtraction in your head. Just don't. It made me cringed.
He is a funny guy. However, his lectures are not organized. His reader is weel designed. Open reader/laptop/calculator exams/quizzes. Quizes are designed and I quote "to shock you". A movie is also part of this class. A lot of questions in the final will base on this movie. Make sure you watch it and memorize important details. Hard class general.
Answering his questions and asking good questions can earn you extra credit. Sometimes gives pop "quizzes" which he call Exercises. Midterm and Final LOOKS doable, but I always score much lower than expected, both open book. Only 5 out of 35 students got As, 4 of them because they have the 3 highest Final Exam scores. Great teacher, hard exams.
Professor Michael Willoughby may 'know his content well' but in no way will help you understand the course content. His lectures are all over the place going off on tangents and offensive jokes, there is no textbook, he sells his reader for the course which is also unclear, his exercises are unorganized, and he creates an atmosphere of competition
He's a pretty cool guy and over-all I liked him. I felt his lectures lacked a little structure and he doesn't explain things too well; but he encourages questions and will re-explain things. He does offer lots of extra credit and is pretty funny, but I would recommend using sources outside of class to learn the material if you don't understand it.
People thought that he was really hard, but he grows on you! He wants you to succeed and if you put the time and effort in, then you'll do just fine. If you notice an error in his work, tell him. I almost failed the class due to a careless error, but him knowing my face saved me and i ended up with an A
Lectures seem unorganized but in fact are really well-designed. The best part of the class is the ugly puppy model, which includes all the important principles of accounting. I narrowly missed all three A-insurance quizzes but got the A bonus on final. It gives me a lifelong lesson: one step close to perfect means nothing. Only perfect is perfect.
Misunderstood, stories for days, textbook narcissist, extremely intelligent, very supportive and caring if he decides youre worth it.
He would like to walk around in the lecture room without a microphone, which makes the lecture soooooooo inaudible!!! Also, please be aware of VERY TOUGH TESTS!!!!
He pretends like the class is very easy and he wants to give out as many A's as possible. His lectures are very interesting and keeps your attention, but BEWARE the exams are extremely difficult and time crunched that even if you understand the material fully, you will likely still do VERY poorly.
