he is a good lecturer. hes pretty funny.
very funny, keeps lectures interesting
Pretty easy class. His lectures are very interesting and he likes to have fun. Break out groups suck but you can still make an easy A without completely reading the weekly assingments.

Entertaining, well-organized lectures. Wry sense of humor. But the draconian grading scale on the paper assignments left me with a bad taste in my mouth. If you're a good writer and don't mind reading 50-200 pages a week for breakouts, this is your class. 300-person classes tend to suck anyway.
His lectures are easy to follow and easy to listen too, but the grading on the papers is ferocious. Also there is only a midterm and a final and it is not clear what you need to know. Hard to get an A.
most entertaining class i have ever taken. only lectures, so u have to pay attention to get notes. if you study a lot for tests, they are easy. TA's were very helpful with essays. def a class worth taking.

The best, easiest, and shortest freshman seminar. You watch full movies on Shakespheare plays, so the class can last for 2 to 3 hours, but worth it.
Dr. Winship makes History fun! He is an amazing professor who knows ridiculous amounts of historical knowledge. His class has a relatively low percentage of A's, but trust me- this professor is worth it.
very funny & likeable professor...actually makes history interesting & fun to learn about. only frustrating thing--there's only midterm & final, along with papers. i did ALL of the reading, & worked my butt off studying & writing my essays, but came out with a B. wish his grading was more leanient. if you have to take 2111, take it with him!
TERRIBLE Mistake. His tests are MURDER. He doesn't give a study guide and his TAs don't speak English. Oh and don't get me started on their essay grading. NOBODY makes an A because the TAs can't read English!! Terrible experience, awful professor. Consider yourself lucky if you get a B.
The lectures are kinda boring but he tries to make them fun and interesting. There are no study guides for the tests but if you follow the lecture notes fairly well then you will do ok.
I took a maymester class with him. He is very funny and likes to help you out when he can. His tests are a bit challenging but not impossible. He sometimes****very obscure things on the test and doesn't give out a study guide.
Class is easy if you go to class and discussions. Most of the TA's will give you decent grades if they see you in class or you attempt the work. The lectures are boring but it's history, what did you expect? He tries his best to make it interesting for the undergrads. I'd take another class with him if I needed to.
he is hilarious and makes it interesting and somehwat fun
Great lecturer and kept me from being completely bored in a subject that i have nothing else to learn. However, he only gives 2 tests and 2 papers. Also, there is no textbook, so review is based only on your notes. He doesn't do in class review either, just answers questions. He is awsome, but his tests are harsh. The papers are not that bad.
I hated history prior to having him as a teacher! He's really good in lecture and he and his TA (I had chase) are HILARIOUS and keep class really fun!! It's not an easy A, but as long as you go to class, read the articles, and study for the tests you'll do fine! Oh yes, and definitely try your hardest on the papers--grammar is the worst!
He was such a great teacher! I never liked history, but this class was amazing. It was the only class I liked this semester, and the tests were definitely fair. Just be sure to go to class and take good notes to do well. Definitely reccommend for HIST 1211, you won't regret it.
Hilarious lectures. Ultra liberal guy who makes fun of Bush, as well as other Democrats all the time. 2 tests, 2 papers are the main parts of your grade, plus mini papers every week. Tests weren't too bad as long as you study. Attendance is mandatory even for lecture. I liked him
He took some getting used to for me. The beginning of the class was slow because it wasn't mostly about America. Overall, I liked him. But I had a TA (Evans) I really did not get along with, so it made it a lot harder for me to enjoy the class. Just remember your weekly papers you spend all your time working on are only 12% of your grade!
IF YOU LIKE GOING TO THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA, DON'T TAKE WINSHIP. He is literally, the worst teacher I've ever had. Tests were extremely hard, papers graded unreasonably tedious, and if you try to work with him on getting extra help/being a good student - he just makes a rude,smart-a comment like he always does. TA's take job way too seriosly too
I think Winship was great. He was hilarious and always kept class interesting. His tests were moderately hard and the papers were graded very hard. The class was interesting, but very difficult. You have to work hard to get a B.
I hate history Winship made his material interesting to learn. A decent amount of reading involved, pay attention when you read. If you don't take good notes in lectures, don't take his class because it's all lecture. I took it during Maymester and thought the tests were pretty fair. Papers are graded hard.
i loved this class and he really cares i took him for freshman college and i enjoyed him.very knowledgeable in the subject content i. paper was graded very hard but ta did it and she even wasnt that bad i liked her and the class i give him top marks. it is a lecture class based off of notes
Winship Rocks! His lectures are interesting and the tests are based directly from them. If you come to class,(mandatory) and take notes you should be fine. The TAs grade so make nice with yours and vary your time based on what the grades are worth-meaning don't focus on the weekly assignments as much as the papers and tests-and you'll be fine!
Professor Winship is probably one of the best lecturers ever. He keep things entertaining and I'm always awake! It does suck that the only grades consist of 2 papers (which are graded way too hard) and 2 tests (which require VERY specific details) but it's worth if for the lectures!
this should be your "A" class.. there's no textbook except for breakout sessions.... he's a lecturer and very entertaining.... BUT you have to go to class... all the tests are based on the notes.. the tests are multiple choice and short answer.... easiest history class you can take but you have to study the notes daily to remember people and dates
Great prof! Lectures were very interesting. He's very sacastic and funny. His TAs grade too hard but the class was still enjoyable. Definitely recommend if you need the class...
Hard class. Teacher is very funny and very witty, but the class is not easy. Tests are confusing and there are is no study guide. He is a GREAT lecturer, but can be unclear with what will be on the test. Took the class in maymester. Papers are graded really hard. Fun to attend class, not fun to get your grade.
He's amazing! Funniest professor you will ever have! He literally makes you want to switch to being a history major! Take his class if it is at all possible!
VERY interesting, witty and funny guy! His lectures make you enjoy colonial history. Best lecturer I have ever had. Its hard to know whats on the tests and there is a lot of novel books to read but no textbook. It is not an easy class but you'll enjoy winship.
Winship is the best lecturer you will ever have. He has fantastic humor and his tests are very reasonable considering the vast amount of material covered. MUST GO TO CLASS AND TAKE GOOD NOTES. Listen carefully and look out for key words like "significance". STUDY and you will be fine. Seek help from your TA, that's what they are there for!
Winship is a great lecturer, but don't expect him to stick to any outline! Take care to memorize important dates and know the significance of major events for the tests; go to the TA conference prior to turning in your papers. I stressed all semester but made a high A.
Took this class as a Maymester, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Winship is hilarious and a very interesting lecturer. Probably one of the few people I could listen to for three hours every day. BUT you have to take good notes because there is no powerpoint/outline. Would definitely be a good Maymester choice!
Wonderful professor, I thoroughly enjoyed the class. This has absolutely nothing to do with my major, and papers are the worst for me, but him and his TA were absolutely great. Take him! The man LOVES the subject and will get you involved in it as well.
Pros You will never come to class bored He engages with the whole class and he keeps you entertained the whole entire time He doesnt let you use cell phones or computers, which I think is a Pro because you pay attention and take notes! Cons: This class is pretty difficult Alot of Reading and two HARD essay prompts Come to class, take notes
I honestly love history, but found his class to be boring. He talks in circles and can be amusing every once in a blue moon. It seemed more like he would rant than anything else. I didn't like it, but that's just me. He assigns a ton of readings that are long and pretty repetitive. Expect to read a book a week most weeks for his class.
Does this studdering, repetitive thing but he is very clear on what he wants you to know; he does go out of order at times, so you have to go through and kinda re-do your notes. TA's are key! You have readings each week and your TA's report 12% of your grade from their time with you & the other 88% comes from them too bc they grade ur tests/essays
2 big essays, 2 big tests..a lot of reading and studying. If you are a freshman..beware. but if you've been around study your tail off and you'll do fine
Great professor who knows his stuff and loves the class. He's pretty funny and if you work hard and know your stuff for game sessions he'll respect you and help you however he can. Really enjoyed his class
There are two tests and two papers (they were pretty tough). Your grade basically depends on your TA. Weekly readings were a pain and so was studying for the exams. I would recommend taking him if you're willing to study A LOT. Anyways, I liked Winship. He was a great instructor and he def knows his stuff. P.S. Don't chew gum in class.
Dr. Winship's lectures are some of the most interesting that I've ever attended. There are two test with material strictly from lecture and two essays that you compose with material strictly from readings from the breakout sessions. The tests are somewhat easy, so long as you study, but the essay prompts are very difficult. 12% BO 44% Essay 44% Exm
If you are needing to take HIST 2111, you want to take Winship. He is extremely enjoyable and entertaining. My understanding is that Maymester and regular session there are two paper and two tests, thats it. He said people always do better during Maymester. I'm so glad I took this class. Would be too much with another maymester.
If you need HIST 2111 to graduate, definitely take it with Winship's Maymester class. A $15 booklet and $12 paperback book is the only cost. He has done this class for many Mays & has it down to a finely tuned comedy/teaching routine. You will need to read and study every night for 3 weeks, but it will be worth the effort.
Winship provided me with a smooth understanding of American History with his interesting personal stories and down-to-earth type personality. He is an odd one, but surely one you will not forget! Oh, and don't chew gum in there, he commented that "the bubbles people blow look like aliens and they scare me". You will love him.
Lectures were funny and entertaining. There's only 2 tests and 2 essays. Essays are very strictly graded and the tests are pretty hard. If you aren't a good writer, I wouldn't recommend him. Pretty much all history professors have hard tests though anyway. Oh, and each essay is 5 pages.
Dr. Winship is hilarious. His lectures were very entertaining, even when it came to dry material. There are two tests and two essays. The test were very difficult, but I didn't find the essays too bad. There are weekly readings that you discuss in breakout, and you occasionally have pop quizzes over them.
Dr. Winship is great! I took him during summer semester for Freshman College and enjoyed him so much. He is a funny guy & his lectures are interesting. Everything you learn comes straight from his lectures so attendance is key. He is willing to help & is very clear while lecturing. I would recommend him to everyone! Awesome start to my UGA career!
Dr. Winship is a great profesor. I wouldnt say the same about his TAs. However if you stay awake in class (which isn't hard) and take good notes and study your notes well, you will do well. You HAVE to read for the TAs. You have two exams and two papers and if you pay attention and read you can definatly achieve an A. I would take it again.
His class is all lectures. He just talks every class and the whole semester is one long story from the first class to the end. If you miss a class, youll probably be confused so I wouldnt recommend it. He makes lectures interesting though so its not a big deal to go. He has a midterm test/paper and a final test/paper, nothing else.
Not the easiest class and there's a lot of reading, but he makes it super interesting. He's really funny and a great lecturer. Go to class, take thorough notes and it's not hard to make at least a B
He's a funny guy which helps keep you somewhat entertained, but you MUST take good notes. He doesn't use powerpoint so you have to attend class because the tests go in depth. It's part MC, part short answer, and part description of certain events. Also, weekly readings along w/ questions. Your grade is 2 papers, midterm, and final.
Winship is awesome, but its really up to the TA on what grade you get. Test are pretty hard, papers could have been easier, but again depends on what your TA wants to see. My TA was pretty hard, but an awesome person, so the semester was fun. 2 test and 2 essay grades. One of the only classes that I didn't dread going to.
Winship a great professor, but you have to listen carefully and missing lectures will kill you. You also have to read the readings carefully, which are a lot. TA is very important to your final grade.
Dr Winship is hilarious and his lectures are interesting- he tells history like a story. You must go to class bc they take attendance and there's assigned seating. Tests are straight from lecture notes- take good notes, it's hard sometimes bc he talks fast. Essays are graded so harshly- 5 points off per grammar mistake but you can revise the first1
I had Dr. Winship for HIST 2111 in Freshman College. He is awesome, funny, and very knowledgable. Lots of readings with questions but they weren't too hard just annoying to do. His class made me want to take more History classes in the future. Overall, he is a great professor to have and I learned a lot from the class.
Winship is an AMAZING history professor. I had him for HIST2111 during Freshman College and LOVED it. He is very knowledgable and makes the material interesting with very engaging stories. The only cons are you do quite a bit of reading and there is a big essay at the end using the readings. Overall, a quality professor!!
I took this class during freshman college this year and was very impressed. I was initially terrified because of the work load but he was more than understanding and went very far to help us out in any way. Tests were easy if you prepared and took good notes. Very funny guy, very good at his job.
Dr. Winship is an awesome history professor. He really knows his stuff and makes the lectures interesting by telling them like a story. Get ready to go to class and take lots of notes, but don't let that keep you from taking his class. He's hilarious and really gets involved with his students; overall a great professor and one of the best at UGA.
Dr. Winship is by far one of my favorite professors here on campus. He is funny and truly cares about the success of his students. Yes the course requires weekly readings with corresponding assignment questions, but the class as a whole was fairly easy. There is only a midterm and a final, so be sure to take plenty of notes that may be tested on.
This class is fairly easy because the material from tests comes from the notes but WInship is not the best professor. He is pretty entertaining and funny but he literally comes into class and rambles the whole time. no power points, no notes on the board. he just talks. the class consists of two essays and two exams with weekly readings.
He's entertaining, but you have 2 tests and 2 essays (TA grades) which your grade are based on. The tests have 10 multiple choice, 10 two part short answer, and 5 things you have to write a longer short answer for. You must know dates and significance of the latter 5. Reading assignments and questions are due weekly before breakout sessions.
Winship had great reviews but I found this class super hard. I'm an all-around good student and this class really threw me for a loop. He just talks and you take notes. No slides, handouts, textbook, nothing. You just get tested on what he says. Also, there's long readings and questions every week so, get ready to read.
There are no powerpoints or anything but lectures for this class. Instead, Prof. Winship will write (in horrible handwriting) one word on a piece of paper that is projected on to a screen. He has a stutter which makes it difficult to understand, and if you ask a question, expect a sarcastic response that doesn't help.
Terrible communication between him and students. Notorious for changing deadlines/paper instructions and only mentioning it once before class even started or something like that which doesnt allow everyone to hear and account for that sort of information. Your grade is screwed if you mess up one of the 2 test or 2 papers.
Dr. Winship can definitely make you laugh but he can also make you cry when you are up all night reading books for his class. There are two papers, a midterm, a final, and a participation grade. The papers are not bad but the midterm was very different from what he taught us in class. ALWAYS attend his lectures even though you get 5 absences.
I had Dr. Winship for HIST2111 Maymester, and he was a great professor. He gave lots of anecdotes/interesting side notes during the lecture, but he would tell us what points were important. Funny guy and overall I really enjoyed the class.
Dr. Winship is awesome! I took his class for FreshCo. He's a funny person and actually cares about your learning. Doesn't use PowerPoints, he just tells the history like a story. He made it interesting and fun to learn. Tests were pretty easy and came right out of the lectures. Take his class if you can!!
Y'all. I do not know how Winship has a 3.88 out of 5 rating. He makes a core history class ten times harder and more work than it needs to be. And his paper prompts are nothing like what he actually wants from you, very unclear directions. Also he is very rude to his TA's in lecture which basically do all of his grading for him so... not a fan.
I loved his teaching style; no PowerPoints (so don't skip class!), but the way he tells history with stories and connections makes it easy to follow along with. Despite being a class of 200+ it felt very relaxed and engaging. Make sure to study for midterm and final (questions can ask for dates) & keep up with weekly readings for breakout sessions.
Dr. Winship's lectures are completely unstructured and hard to follow. He just rambles during the lecture and writes one or two words on the whiteboard and expects you to follow. The assignments are necessarily long and the papers and tests are graded super harshly. I would not recommend taking him.
He's a great lecturer who has the ability to make history interesting. However, the structure of his class is the worst. His papers are terribly graded with 5 points off for every petty mistake and unclear prompts. During the Covid19 situation, he was not flexible and actually made the final harder. He finds ways to make the class so complicated.
Dr. Winship assigns essentially useless readings every week that are required and then doesn't even pull test questions from these readings. His lectures consist of him lecturing to the 200+ person class with no visual aid apart from writing 1 or 2 terms on the board. Good luck if you miss a note. 2 papers and 2 tests make up 88% of your grade.
No textbook, but there are weekly readings that you have to print out which gets kind of expensive. Winships lectures are extremely engaging, and I never liked history before this class. Your TA is responsible for all your grading, but luckily, I got a good TA who was super helpful.
I took this class in freshman college online. He was intimidating and criticizing. I did fine, but there are only 3 tests and 1 paper which made up 90% of the grade. He was open for extra help. He is particular about his assignments. He is sometimes hard to understand in the lectures and all over the place. You have to write down almost everything.
Very entertaining lectures. However, he does go on at least 3 tangents a class which makes stuff hard to follow. Very few assignments actually account for your grade so if you mess one up, good luck...
Do not take this class. It's a foundation-level course that is made much more difficult than it needs to be. Lectures are incredibly hard to follow and full of nothing. TAs take forever to grade. Papers lose 5 points for every grammar mistake and they are a huge chunk of your grade. He also made his class HARDER during covid by giving essay tests.
Winship is super passionate about his subject and his lectures are always entertaining. He covers the material well and adds facts and details that illustrate history beyond the pages of a textbook. There aren't many assignments, so pay close attention to instructions when doing tests and papers. If you show up and put the work in you'll be fine.
Honestly he was a condescending jerk, very hard to follow and not willing to work with you on anything. I had a family member pass away two days before a paper was due and asked for an extension and he didnt seemed bothered and I had to submit my paper on time if I wanted credit. Grade take forever TAS do most of the work.
I'm pre-med and this class kept me from a 4.0. Ridiculously hard for being an entry-level history class. I was receiving LOW scores on my papers yet scoring 95-99's in my NON entry-level English class. Strongly recommend getting the cliff's quick review US history book because his lectures are chaotic and he goes on tangents.
This is more of a literature class than a History class. Too much writing
I had Dr. Winship during COVID, and he was great! There were weekly lectures that were really interesting. There was only a midterm and final, but it was open note, and as long as you went to class, you did fine. There were also discussions and a paper or two but they werent bad either. As long as you take good notes, youll do good!
Please do not even consider. By far the worst I have had. Be prepared to be a good physical note taker because laptops are not allowed, no textbooks, PowerPoints, or material on eLC to help you, just his voice. Unreasonable grader even though you are only graded by a few things. Not considerate and 100% does not care about you.
Professor Winship is good enough, but he requires lots for an INTRO COURSE. I have never had to do this much work, and it does not reflect at all in the grade -- because there's 2 essays and tests for the WHOLE CLASS. Everything is graded by the TA's so hopefully you get a chill one because beware! those essays and tests are worth 90% OF YOUR GRADE
I found Prof Winship very insightful and enjoyed his lectures. With this being said, it is definitely not an easy course especially if you're just trying to meet credit requirements. You have to go to class since he doesn't post any review on ELC. He does post his lectures, which I found helpful for review.
Professor Winship is by far the worst professor I have ever had out of the three years of being at UGA.There are two essays and two tests to determine your grade in the class. His lectures are verbal with no notes or ppts to help you get the correct info, you will read A LOT, and he tries to push liberal ideas onto you. If you can don't take him.
The biggest narcissist I've ever met. Doesn't care about the students at all, and just rants in class. No powerpoints/ notes, so hope you're a fast writer. Acts like this is a masters-level class despite it being required for everyone to take. In his essays, he takes off 5 points for every grammar mistake. Not exam prep, study guide, etc. Avoid him
This human being is by far the worst educator I have ever encountered. He told the TAs to regrade the final because too many people passed. He also will Doc you -5 points for every grammar error. You can easily expect a very low grade or even a 0 as a paper grade. The class is also just too much work for it to be a general history class.
Avoid him if at all possible. Your grade is based almost entirely on two papers and two tests. He posts zero grades on elc, so knowing what you have in the class is really a shot in the dark. He also posts no materials on elc and does not allow taking electronic notes. He rants quite often in class which makes lectures hard to follow. Just no.
-No textbook -no study guide WHATSOEVER -two tests -two papers -long rants that do not relate to anything in class. -Tests are majority short answers and are very specific -will get deducted 5 points for every grammar error made on a paper (could get a minus on a paper) -TA's are helpful -No grades in ELC the entire semester :(
Winship was alright, he cares a lot about history. The two exams and two papers make up 88% of your grade, so it's vital to do well on those. There was lots of reading that had to be done for the discussions. He posted the lectures online, so you can get away with not going to class. I definitely had to put in a good bit of work to make an A.
My roommate complained about Winship every day. He did not allow any technology to be used. He forced students to print assignments; an inconvenience with limited printers on campus. He was harsh and unclear with grading. He does not use a system with helpful feedback. Lectures were monotonous. He was clearly knowledgeable, but not a great teacher.
While Winship is a fine person, he makes for a bad professor. Winship's lengthy lectures were only one of the annoying aspects of his class. No laptops were allowed in this class, yet he made you turn in all assignments on ELC AND bring a paper copy of it to class. Winship's feedback was negligible at best and confusing at worst. Do not take.
I took this class over the summer, so it was a semester's worth of work in a month, and it was a ridiculous amount of reading (4-6 hrs a night). The tests are very difficult and he grades papers hard. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
Winship is a very interesting person. This class was extremely fun. He isn't very tech savvy, but he is always easily reachable by email. He doesn't put grades on elc, so you never really know how you're doing in the class. Overall, an easy course. Learned a lot about puritans/the revolution. ATTENDANCE IS VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT!
Dr.Winship is clearly very passionate about history. He doesn't post powerpoints but his lectures are not bad at all. He seems to really care about his students, and most of your grades come from your TAs who are super helpful
The work load in this class is insane. There are weekly readings and discussions, which are to be turned in both online and in person, two 5-7 page papers (you will receive the instructions a week to two MAX prior to due date), and two exams. No technology is allowed, there are no PowerPoints or recorded lectures, and attendance is mandatory.
He doesn't allow technology in the classroom, but he is a very intriguing and funny lecturer. Grading is mainly dependent on 2 exams and 2 essays, and there are weekly readings. The readings typically aren't too bad as long as you break them up well. Overall, not as bad of a class as everyone makes it out to be. He is an interesting guy.
I had Dr. Winship for a Reacting to the Past class, and it was one of the best, and most immersive, that I've taken. He weighs participation really heavily, and he assigns a good amount of reading and homework, but he also works with each student to help them have the best possible experience. Definitely take if you have the chance.
Dr. Winship's class was hard just because you're really only graded on tests, papers, and attendance. However, his lectures are interesting and keep you engaged. You can't use any technology and there are readings every week. Some of the readings could be very long but they were interesting most of the time. He was good for a history professor.
Really funny guy who is passionite and knowledgeable about the material. The only problem with him is that he uses no powerpoints which is annoying if you miss class. 84% of your grade is based on two papers and two difficult exams, so its key you do good on those. Easy class for most of the semester as long as you take notes and prepare for exams.
Tests are impossible. He is an entertaining teacher but uses no slides or notes or textbooks. Reading assignments every week. I would try to take a different class/teacher if possible, if this is your only option your grade will probably come down to your TA.
Dr. Winship in his own words, wants us to experience history for ourselves, and does not allow any tech in the room; however, he still manages to keep things entertaining. His tests are hard, but not overly so- as long as you keep good notes. Be ready to write a lot, but as long as you keep up with your readings, he is a very enjoyable professor.
Took for Maymester to get it out of the way and kinda regretted it. No tech in the classroom so be prepared to write A LOT. Would tell us the wrong info or forget to teach specific things that would show up on test questions. Reading assignments weren't bad but can be a lot (esp. for Maymester). Was pretty rude when giving feedback on final papers
This class is not impossible at all, but it's too much work for everyone to be putting in just for the history credit. The amount of content subject to be on tests is ridiculous, they take attendance for lectures, & we have a huge final essay & test in the span of 2 days. You only need a 90 for an A which is great, this class is just super annoying
Hard to take notes when there are no powerpoints used in class. He just talks during lectures. He says the wrong dates sometimes and says you should look them up after class to confirm what he said. His lectures can get confusing at times. There are two non-cumulative tests that are VERY specific. Take another professor if you can.
It was hard bc he doesn't use any ppt & strictly talks for the whole period. 5 free absences.besides lectures the discussion days consisted of reading some type of material (sometimes sooo long) and taking a short 5 q quiz but they were easy. there were 2 tests 2 essays. essays were based on TA so luck ig but as long as u fulfill reqs ur good
Winship is a good guy, but he uses no powerpoints and just talks at you, which is a problem because he tells you dates that he sometimes gets wrong. The lectures are engaging though. Two exams and a paper are basically the whole grade, but there isn't much reading usually. You'll probably struggle if you aren't familiar with the period already.
The exams were based on long readings and his lectures. His lectures are just him talking with no microphone and hoping that 300 kids can hear him just fine. He's a funny dude, but it does not feel like he's rooting for his students. However, the TAs are all amazing and are constantly looking to help you.
He was one of the most interesting, eccentric professors in my time at UGA. I will never forget this class, for good and bad reasons. He is literally hilarious, but a lot of students are rubbed the wrong way and receive his humor as offensive. I never had a clear idea what I was supposed to do, but I definitely learned a lot. Easy grader, too.
All of the tests are based on lectures. If you miss a class, it is very hard to keep a good grade or catch up on the lectures. His lectures are interesting but hard to be fully engaged as you have to handwrite all the notes and may miss some information, and he lectures a 300-person class with no mic or slides. TAs are very helpful though!
I took this class over the summer, and I was worried after reading the other reviews. However, Dr. Winship is a great teacher. He tells interesting stories about his life and is very passionate about history. It was not that hard for me to get an A. You need to go to EVERY SINGLE CLASS, write everything he says, and read over your notes closely.
I took his class over the summer and was initally scared because of the ratings. We had smaller class sizes so it made it easier to talk to him, but the workload was reasonable, he'd answer questions pretty well, and his stories were awesome. He does make mistakes but he's very passionate about history and funny. His class left a deep impression!
Pretty horrible
Dr. Winship does not publish the details or due dates of assignments or exams on the syllabus, and instead mentions them a week or two before they are due and expects the class to be prepared. He goes off on tangents in his lectures, and there are 1+ page writing assignments due every class. Gets upset at students asking questions. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!
Dr. Winship's class has a unique vibe - no slides, just his captivating lectures. The workload is reasonable, and Unstuckstudy came in handy for prepping. Overall, an enjoyable experience!
I took this class in a summer term but he is a great teacher. He really knows what he's talking about and makes lectures very interesting. There are readings but they arent too bad. Just go to class, pay attention, take notes, and you should be fine. He is also willing to talk to you about grades outside of class.
Disrespectful when providing feedback, impossible exams, no technology in the classroom, would consistently provide us with incorrect information that we'd be tested on. THE WORST!
He stands at the front of the class and talks the entire lecture everyday. There are only 6 grades in this class: quizzes and assignments from discussion, 2 essays, and 2 exams. This class really depends on what TA you have as they grade everything. He makes it difficult to understand what to take notes on so pay attention in lecture.
This class was honestly way harder than it needed to be. Get ready for weekly readings along with questions and a quiz on each one. 2 test and 2 essays are most of your grade. He seems passionate but just doesn't teach too well, a lot of what is talked abt during lectures won't be on the test and they are pretty boring. There are better options...
Dr. Winship is a great lecturer and these lectures are VERY important so attendance is mandatory. However, his assignments, due dates, and exam dates are never clear. Also the technology learning curve is crazy, I don't think he ever created an assignment 100% correct and I'd often have to email him to upload the dropbox. But he is an easy grader.
He has no idea what he's talking about and switches between dates and terms because he isn't sure which is right. Graded by 2 essays and 2 tests, which is not much, and the tests are tough and require deep thought on things that were never discussed in class. I studied TONS for tests and did bad on both, I don't know how it's possible to get an A.
