He is the only Genetics teacher, but he is very good. Since Genetics isnt an easy class it is good to have a good teacher like Dr. Wooten. Your labs will probably be what is the hardest.
Only teacher, he is on a 7pt scale. It sucks and the class is at 7 am. Labs are tedious and long.
He has an obsession with ruining your life with a 7 am class, and is constantly rubbing his bald head, his second obsession I guess.....
this is a hard class!! He is on a 7pt grading scale which is stupid. the class is big and at 7am. overall it sucks.
it's not his fault that the class starts at 7am, but the 7pt scale is make it or break it for a lot of bio majors
Genetics was tough, part for being early, part for the silly 7pt grade scale. I had a 91, and got a B - not fair at all. Labs suck. Dr. Wooten is OK, but not the best guy to see at 7am...
Hard class at 7 a.m. Labs werent to bad just take forever. The test vary in hardness from multiple choice to short answer or working probs. Class can be interesting if enjoy listening to Dr. Wooten.
He is a good teacher- the bad thing: class at 7 AM and the 7 point scale
The class is very boring, he is always there for class, and the tests are very dificult. Don't plan on partying on Thursday night, or Sunday night, because you have to be in class in order to pass the class.
Tests pull random garbage out of the book in stupidly phrased multiple choice questions. Seven point scale s garbage. Someone should check with the universty to see if it is actually allowed. He makes a fun and easy class into a tedious waste of time.
one of those teachers who likes to prove that he knows more than you. Hates to give an A (thus the 7 pt scale) and tests questions are pulled from space. The practice tests on web ct are so easy and nothing like the real test
This class is bad because of the 7 pt scale. Basically if you work every single problem in the book you can do well but that is near impossible since he doesn't tell you which problems to work, he says "work them until you feel confidant you know it&
I admit it. I hate him for General Genetics. But if you need an elective, take Populaton Genetics. He gave us back our first tests and told us to do ANYTHING to get the right answer (even ask a neighbor). Guaranteed an A or B. Didn't require taking final.
not my favorite person to see at 7am, but gave very clear notes. tests come straight from notes but were difficult. occasional ****ed comments and attempts to be funny didnt quite go over well.. but dont let the 7pt scale scare you, alot of us made A's
Its an early class; however, he gives detailed notes and really knows his stuff. Tests arent impossible, but definitely tough. Labs are long but interesting. My favorite biology teacher.
Explains notes clearly. test arent bad if you read text, but he's a jerk. Thinks he knows everything, wont admit when hes wrong. Made my semester a living h***. Labs are pointless: just copying numbers from a computer which you could easily do at home
The material really isn't that difficult, I covered most of the 1st test my freshman year of HIGH SCHOOL. Come to the 7am class, even if it's in your PJ's. He explains the material clearly and doesn't require you to learn it to the painful detail that the text book presents it in.
Dr. Wooten is tough but not unreasonable. He is available if you ever need help. His tests are tough but they come from the notes which are very organized. Go to class and pay attention and you can do fine. The 7pt scale does suck.
Most difficult class I've ever taken. You can be smart AND work hard and still not make an A. Asks the most ridiculous questions on tests, not fair at all.
i hated this class..only B i've made at auburn...of course, with a 7 point scale, it's not hard to make a B...only teacher for this class which sucks...but at least class is passable
i hated this class and this professor. the amt. of time you will put in will not be evidenced by your grade thanks to his 7 pt. grading scale. he pulls questions from nowhere & his tests are impossible. he's a jerk so be warned.
Ok, Dr Wooten is nowhere near as bad as everyone is saying. Sure it's a hard class, but if you actually go and pay attention you learn a lot and it's interesting. If you go to his office he is very helpful, as long as he can see youre putting forth an effort. One of my favorite classes so far!
Yea no kidding, he's a great teacher. 7 AM sucks, but get over it. I wish I had him for all my Chem and Bio classes. Makes the class very interesting.
wooten is a good lecturer and very interesting. tests arent too hard, but he likes to throw in bogus trick questions every now and then. with 7 point scale an A is very hard, but a B is cake. hes the only genetics teacher tho, so either take him or change schools i guess.
Interesting lectures if you can get up in time. His tests were unreasonably difficult. I studied my butt off and still made Ds. The grading scale is really annoying too but that's his choice.
If you go to class (which are very interesting), keep up with what he teaches everyday, and do your work in lab... an A is easy! I did some problems at the end of each book chapter and read notes... Tip: Get old tests!!!! He reuses questions!
Hard class. I know it's early but you have to go. Good teacher, knows his stuff, willing to help and always in his office.
ive taken the first 3 tests. the first one was pretty hard..took an epistasis problem from the book verbatim. they have been getting easier tho. as long as the final isnt terrible i think hes a great teacher . he is a bit of a geek and he is interesting to listen to. lab is pretty straightforward
Dr. wooten grades on the tough scale true, but if you stay focused all semester and don't have to play catch up, an a is very achievable.
grading scale sucks, he hates football so take him in the spring, the guy is an asno!
Dr. Wooten may come across as a jerk at first but hes really not. his lectures are great i wasnt bored once (and i get bored easily) I don't like football that mcuh myself so it was nice to hear someone else degrade it. Just be sure you do almost every single chapter 3 and 4 problem bc if you dont understand the mendel/epistasis probs u are screwed
he is very hard, his lectures are interesting but seems to get enjoyment out of the test average being below 60. he does talk bad about football and puts tests the mondays after big games..if there was anyone else to take do that, but i dont think there is. and not the mention..the 7 point grading scale blows.
Dr. Wooten is hard, but he is a very nice man. I know i failed the final and deserved bad but he gave me better. you just have to go talk to him! very interesting guy
He's the only prof who teaches this class so, there is no way getting out of it. I'd recommend the spring term instead of fall, but his class is VERY interesting and not that hard if you have old exams. The only thing that sux is his 7 point grading scale :o(
Good teacher. Really explained the material well. The seven point scale is tough, but he understands the information and relays it to the student very well.
His class is very interesting and he knows his stuff. The seven point scale BLOWS. Try to get all possible points in lab because it helps out! Also, grab some old tests b/c the format is the same and the figures are the same with NEW questions. Make a point to go by and ask questions so he knows who you are. Oh, he loves the beach mouse! good luck!
This semester all bets are off. He has changed to four tests and has caught on to people using his old tests. He uses his tests to "teach students a lessen" which I thought lecture was for! It's a hard class and he's the only one who teaches it. You can get an A in lab and still fail his class! Take it @ your local community college in the summer!
Genetics is difficult by nature, but Wooten is just a jerk. 7 pt scale stinks, study as best you can, but it doesn't guarantee you anything. have fun!
Extremely helpful if you invest the time. If you don't he does not care. Not difficult material at all, just study it. 7pt Scale does suck, but a good grade is very possible. And you gotta take it here, 3000 and above doesn't transfer from community college.
This class is really HARD. Tests are hardly anything like the notes or questions in book. I studied hard and made a D. It was a really difficult class. Final was also extremely difficult. Unless you are a geneticist, you will have a hard time with this class!!
I really don't know why this guy has a smiley face, cause he don't deserve it!! The class is EXTREMELY hard. He does teach the class and does explain well, however the tests are ridiculously hard and don't really correspond to the notes. Also, has material from lab on tests, never heard of that, especially when you are graded in lab separately.
Outstanding teacher! If you come to class and study the class is not that difficult. Use your textbook, he loves to ask questions from the book. Nice person one-on-one, nothing like he seems to be in class.
I am currently in my first year of vet school, and this class i had last semester and it really helped prepare me..he is tough and i felt like some of his test question were out of the blue. Also if you are not good at word problems study up, cause that is what most of the tests are..and they are worth alot of points..good teacher but 7 point scal
SURPRISES YOU WITH THINGS IN THE TEXTBOOK MENTIONED ONCE AND NOT ON THE THINGS THAT SEEM IMPORTANT AND MORE DETAILED. FINAL EXAM SHOWS UP TO BE MULTIPLE CHOICE.
Very hard. do not take it in the fall tests on monday after big football games. pay attention in class book hardly helps. test will surprise you may be all multiple choice or one problem that you have seen once. good luck
Really rough class. Stay on top of everything from day 1. I made a 90 which was a B (7pt scale blows). Questions seem to come out of the blue. Material for the 1st test was the hardest for me. Lab BLOWS! (our TA talked about random crap for half the period - leaving us so little time to finish.)- but it can help your grade if you can do well in lab
GREAT teacher. Awesome guy! Definately a challenging class for graduate students but it was a lot of fun and I learned a lot.
This class isn't too hard but there is no room for mistakes. I made a D on the first test and A's on everything else, a 99 for lab and I still got a B. It's on a 7 point scale. Really study for the first test and if you do well on it then you should get a A. Take Sara Gardner for TA if she is still there. She taught the first and second section!
Great class, just wish it weren't graded so hard. Once you slip up, the is no coming back. I made C on the first test and A's on the rest, but that 93 is just impossible to get if you slip up. 7 point scale will kill you! Super interesting class however.
Wooten is an ok guy. Class isn't bad, towards the end of the semester he makes it relevent. I made a 50(yeah a 50) on the first test and pulled off a B(only God knows how.) The 7 point scale sucks. He's pretty nice to go talk to he's on outdoors kinda guy so if that's your thing he fun to go talk to. You have to take him so I can't say avoid him.
Dr. Wooten is a cool guy and this is a very interesting class. class gets easier as the semester goes on. the first two test are hard. make sure u do the problems in the back of the chapters for these two tests. he uses the same problems. after that, the last test and final aren't bad (multiple choice). lab is easy
Well, you're kinda stuck with him either way. This is a hard class... don't let anyone tell you otherwise. But you can do it. Labs really help your grade AND clarity (probably one of the few science courses where lab matters). You have to know the material like the back of your hand, because some of the test questions are tricky. But you can do it.
Know ALL the notes. The book can help clarify, but not necessary. The first test is difficult, so study the hardest for it. The second and third tests are easier. Know the vocab. Lab is super easy.

Yeah he's the only genetics guy they got and he's kinda a prick. I loved his class though. he was very UNINTERESTING at the beginning probably because he was trying to flunk as many as he could, but after the first test he was GREAT. By the way I did pretty good and failed the first test. 7-point scale sucks, however LABS ARE YOUR GOLD!!!!
Great teacher, yes the first test can be difficult, but only if you aren't willing to put the time in to actually learn the material. If you do that the first test will be a breeze as well the others. Take advantage of the UTA tutoring hours, they usually know what they are talking about even if they sometimes have a roundabout way of teaching you.
I actually ended up enjoying this class. The first test is very hard, but after that things seem to wind down. You still need to study pretty consistently and go to class to really learn the material. Labs are a piece of cake.
He is not a very nice professor one-on-one, but is as a teacher if that makes sense. He does not give you everything concrete to study from, which stinks. His first 2 tests are really hard, while the last 2 aren't so much. He has a 7-pt. scale. You're stuck w/ him w/ genetics. Lab pulls your grade up though.
Thank your lucky stars he retired. A seven point scale and NO extra credit kills your grade.
He's not retired like the last guy said. Difficult class, 7 pt. scale sucks, but lab can be your saving grace. Go to all your labs and do all your lab work. Aside from that, make sure you study for the tests, and the easiest way is to go to class and pay attention. He's really not impossible, but you can't expect an easy grade.
Tough class, 7pt scale makes it tougher. Material isn't hard but tests are thorough. Don't try to take one sick . Go to lab and do well in there. Go to class. Read the book for only the first test then start studying old tests with your notes! He is approachable but he is always right. Not much partial credit! Know your stuff!
Interesting class but you have to stay with it. First test material is all problem solving so work practice problems in book. He is approachable but it is a big class so do not count on getting a lot of time with him. Do the labs, the grade will help save you and help on the tough lecture tests.
Well,,,I thought i wanted to go into genetics,,until i took his class. Making an A is hard enough in his class but on his scale you have to make a 93 for an A, 86 for a B etc. There is absolutely no curve. His first test is a killer, last one and the final arent too bad though. He's not very helpful when you go talk to him about test grades either.
Don't believe the hype, Wooten is a good guy. It is tough, but it's that way because it's supposed to separate the men from the boys. Stay on top of the material and you will be fine. I had an easy A. The labs are a breeze, you should easily make a 100% on them overall. He's also very helpful during office hours. Final is ALL multiple choice!
Pretty tough. Great teacher. You truly learn the stuff and he is a good lecturer. Not really as hard as everyone makes it out to be, but you have to do well on the tests. The problems aren't hard, you just have to be able to work them quickly. And to the guy who said "it separates the boys from the men": keep telling yourself that.
I really can't bring myself to hate the guy, but it seems this class is alot harder than it should be. It's very similar to physics and chemistry in that you have to work out the problems AND know certain properties of different crosses. First two tests are killer, but the 3rd is tough, but has no problems. He offers help, but practice is the best
He definitely can come across as a d-bag to a lot of people in class but he definitely knows his stuff and I thought the class was really interesting overall. I enjoyed his lecture style and he kept my attention everyday. The 7 pt scale does make it hard and you have to really study and do well on the first two tests if you want any chance of an A.
I still can't figure out why this class was so hard. To top it off, just about everyone found it tough, but it seemed as if grades were spread out very evenly across the spectrum. He is the only teacher for genetics, and he really brings some tough questions to tests. Answers to them don't always come from lecture, which can be frustrating.
This class is easy as pie. Go to class and pay attention. It will help tremendously. He's a smart guy and loves him some Genetics! Try to get Karen Tenaglia as your lab GTA - she is AMAZING! Get old exams and it'll be too easy.
He is wonderful. He's the only one that teaches, so be ready. Lab is easy if you and your lab partner know how to work together. Old exams really help you understand. Karen Tenaglia is great too: very helpful, and just attending her lab will help you to better understand the material. Lab should be an easy %20 of your grade.
This class was awful. He's not helpful AT ALL if you see him during his office hours, the exams are tough, and his 7-point grading scale SUCKS! The lab consists of a lot of busy work.
He is a great guy - he asks a lot of his students, but I think that you deserve the grade you get. He will help you if you go to office hours and he spreads the grades out evenly throughout the semester. FIRST TEST WAS HARDEST. I made a 64 on it (which was supposedly good), and did fine on all the other tests. STUDY IN ADVANCE - Good Luck :)
Hard. First test is hardest. He will make you feel dumb. After 30 years the man finally decided to do away with the 7 pt. scale (which screwed me in to a C last year) and now has the normal 10 pt. scale, so now is the time guys. Make lots of notecards, really practice and know the difference in the problems. Old tests good for extra practice.
Tests get progressively easier, lab problems are on them which Wooten conveniently fails to mention. Go to class even though its early as hell, study a lot for the tests (especially the first) and you should do fine. Lab is a joke so it should boost your grade.
The class wasn't too bad. It is really early, so you need motivation to get up for that. He teaches the subject pretty well. Make sure you get old tests, as most of the questions are either similar or word for word on the tests. I didn't know this until it was too late and ended up with a B.
Tricky. Does use old tests frequently. Went to his office very often and still had trouble. be sure to read the book and review his notes. Lab is very easy and can help your grade so make sure to do good on the quizzes. He will not show you what you made on the final exam which is very annoying
Easily one of the most overrated classes in COSAM. Maybe it's because I took it Junior year, but this class is nothing special. The first test is easily the hardest, but if you understand his practice problems, and avoid dumb mistakes, it is nothing terrible. Overall not a very difficult class. If you have had 3200, 50% of the class is a review.
Lab is easy if you do pre lab quizzes. First test is very hard but if you study the book and do the problems you will do very well. Final is very difficult but I managed to pull out an A. Class really helped me on the MCAT.
Wooten is really hard and it takes a lot of work 2 do well in class. I have never seen him teach a class that is not at 8am (Genetics at 8am = boring)! Hard 2 get motivation 2 attend class and does not care about gameday weekends. Test are on Mondays. If u plan on having fun at the football games, think again cause all u will think about is Gen....
great teacher! it's obvious he loves the subject and cares that you understand what's going on. really nice when you talk to him one-on-one. test are challenging but everything comes from lecture. lab is really easy also
Dr. Wooten is a great professor. Having taken the DAT, I can assure you that this is one of the most useful classes in COSAM. I don't think I ever missed a genetic question in my practice DAT or real DAT questions, and I never really needed to study those concepts. Wooten does his job well.
Very interesting class. Just hard to wake up for an 8 am and getting motivated. As long as you get old tests, read through his notes, and go to class you'll do fine. test 1 is the hardest test. as long as you work hard you will get the grade you deserve.
This class is alot harder then it has to be. DO NOT MISS CLASS. Be very familiar with everything on powerpoint slides and give yourself at least 3-4 days of intense studying before a test. I barely pulled out an A and I invested a ton of time. The final was absolutely brutal. Also, be ready for tricky questions on exams.
He puts lecture slides online, but you really need to go to class to make sense of them. Tests are always Monday at 8 AM, so I wouldn't take this class during football season. He uses a 7 point grading scale instead of 10, but you can still make an A. His tests are tricky more than they are difficult. It's really helpful if you can get old tests!
Genetics is hard but fascinating! I looked forward to class everyday even though it was at 8 am. He is a fantastic teacher and makes everything crystal clear. You MUST invest about 4 days studying for his tests. They are HARD. And the class is on a 7 point scale. He DOES NOT change the scale at the end. I had friends who had a 91 and they got a B.
Great teacher, very knowledgeable about Genetics. You will have to study hard for an A, but no lecture homework, so you will have time to study for the tests. Labs are usually easy A's and will boost your score. He has not done away with the 7 pt scale. He switches from 7 to 10 pt at random semesters(bet on 7 pt, that's what I had).
Absolutely horrible class. His 7 pt scale is beyond unnecessary. I studied for days for each exam and my grades just got worse. I ended with a 74 which is a D in Wooten's eyes. Aced the lab but it doesn't make up for the 7pt scale.
Very Difficult class. The grading scale is not fair which makes the class very frustrating.
He provides excellent examples in class to understand the concepts. Very nice guy, even let me take a test I slept through accidentally. Lab is easy and great grade booster. He finds a natural break in the class to do his grade scale (I got a 91 and it was an A). I feel like I learned a lot from him, and I really enjoyed the class. Great professor!
As mentioned, grading scale is not normal. He is very knowledgable and clear about the subject matter! Tests can be easy, but make sure to know details. He likes to use little things to trip up students on some questions (ex: sex determination).
Nice man, go to Office hours. 7 point scale is ridiculous. Material isn't too hard, I got A's (Even on his scale) on 2 of the 3 tests, and the final, but I still ended up with a B on his scale, a 91. All because of one test that I got a 79 on. Not very flexible with points.
Wooten is a good professor. His online notes will not make sense unless you go to class or read the books. He rewards those who go to class sometimes with extra credit. DO NOT fall asleep in class, he really does not like that First test is ridiculous, get tutoring and go to office hours when possible.
Dr. Wooten is a very smart guy. His lectures are informative, and the notes are posted online. However, you have to go to class to understand them. His tests aren't super hard per say, but super tricky! I never used the book, but some people find it helpful.
Dr. Wooten is a very smart man and is very passionate about what he teaches. He explains material well and is clear about what he expects. His tests can be hard but if you practice the word problems a lot and know your notes, you will do fine. Old test help A LOT - he usually posts some for his classes each semester but find as many as possible.
Wooten has a pretty standard class. Go to the lectures, read the book, and you'll do fine. The tests are a little tricky because of all the jargon and big words he uses. His power points are online, but the best method is reading straight out of the book. The lab is super easy, but a little tedious.
Dr. Wooten is a great professor. Genetics is a fascinating topic and he does a nice job at teaching it. He posts the notes online but they don't make any sense unless you go to class. He's clearly passionate about what he does and VERY smart. The tests are hard but not impossible if you study. Pretty much, you'll get out what you put in.
Wooten seems like a really nice guy but he takes his class way too seriously. His tests are way too hard and if you don't show up to class, then you're screwed. I showed up to every class and still couldn't make a decent grade on his tests. Would not recommend!
I took him online and expected a fairly easy semester. His tests that he posted are absolutely nothing like the test you take. He covers an insane amount of material and wants a complete understanding for the tests. Only thing that helps is that there are so many lab grades and the lab quiz answers are online.
Wooten is a great professor and makes lectures very interesting. Attendance isn't mandatory per se but that is the key to a good grade. Tests come from lecture notes and are very straightforward. Study hard and you will be fine. A is very do able.
This being an online class, it is important to watch all of the videos for lectures. It is important to also do all of the homework/labs, they help buffer your grade. The tests aren't terrible if you study your butt off, but otherwise, its pretty hard. The labs take FOREVER. Would not suggest taking online, hard to get ahold of professor or TA.
Wooten is a good teacher, but he expects a lot of his students. Attendance is not mandatory and he posts (although very outdated) lecture notes online; however, he tries to weed out lazier students who don't come to class by lecturing heavily and testing on material he only covers in lecture. The lab considerably helps your grade. Use his resources
Go to class in order to get all the notes and hear lectures. posts very outdated notes online but can help your studying. tests were all multiple choice. lab helps grade a ton so don't slack off in the easy lab. would recommend for genetics
One of the best teachers I have ever had, very kind and personable. He is very smart and is here to help. He is a staple in the Auburn COSAM program and many people admire him. He gives old tests out for you to study. The grade you get is what you deserve: no if, ands, or buts. Want an A? Work for it and you got it.
Dr. Wooten is a great lecturer, but don't skip class. He likes to mention things in class that aren't in the powerpoints and will be on the test. Really likes when students go see him in office hours. Challenging course, definitely read the textbook and don't memorize but try to actually understand the concepts and processes.
This class is very lecture heavy. His lectures are incredibly interesting and he always gives examples, but you are expected to know the lecture material very thoroughly, as he will test on things that are not covered in the book. Go to office hours and work hard.
Took his online genetics class. Genetics is a relatively difficult course but Wooten is a very fair professor. Labs are tedious but important (especially for the final!) Online class is a little extra effort because you have to be organized but it wasn't too difficult. Wooten is your best bet for a genetics prof at Auburn
Wooten is a good teacher and covers everything you need to know on his lecture videos. He explains things really well and the class just isn't that hard although it is a decent time commitment. he provides old tests and old test from other students are also helpful. lab kindof sucks but is not difficult.
I think he went a little crazy with the amount of time he took for his online lectures so be prepared for this to be a major time commitment if you take it online. His tests aren't awful but make sure you know how to actually do problems. He's a pretty reasonable guy and easy to get hold of by email. Just be ready to put in the work.
Take this class online if you like to cry. Really. The lectures online take up way more time than just taking it in a classroom. He doesn't get to the point very fast and that makes it hard to know what to actually study. It's the part where he puts the powerpoint up for 1sec you'll be tested on. Mad about buying book b/c we never had to use it.
your grade is from 4 exams and a final, only. In previous years, the lab would help your grade, however, that is no longer the case. If you do not have a lot of old tests from students who took him in the most recent semesters (which I did not), an A is absolutely impossible. Take it in class. It'll probably be less of a time commitment that way.
Although this class was online, it was very difficult. The test questions were extremely difficult and often did not reflect his lecture matieral
The online class is not that difficult. Set aside a couple of hours each week to watch the videos and take detailed notes and it won't be hard to get an A. The tests are very doable from just those notes, I spent the money on the textbook and didn't open it once.
Tests are full of trick questions and are confusing, but they're doable if you study really hard. The amount of time and work you need to put in for this class seems really disproportionate given that its just an intro genetics class. I'd say use the book, his lecture notes, and take *really* good notes. Challenge him on grades too; you never know.
The ONLY grades are 4 exams, a final (which everyone says destroys their grade), and packback. Packback is worth only 10%, which barely affects your grade. Tests are very tricky and very detailed. Dr. Wooten will not open up tests to review wrong answers, and is not the nicest in his emails. Even harder than biochem, and I am better at biology.
Do not take his class. He only grades you for exams and packback (only worth 10% of grade). Wording of exams are super tricky and he doesn't give you enough time to solve all the problems. His lectures videos are super long and outdated, and he refuses to re-record them. He is rude in emails. The final is not hard compared to his other exams.
Dr. Wooten is a very nice professor just teaching a hard class. His syllabus seems mean but that is for the genetics department he is actually a fantastic dude and teacher. The exams are hard but he teaches you all the material you would need to make a 100.
He's an okay professor. He has good lectures, and he teaches well. The problem is that he includes several questions on exams that simply were not covered. Wording on exams is extremely difficult to decipher. He is very stringent on exam due dates, which is to be expected. I would recommend taking the regular 3000 class over this.
5 test is your grade and thats it. Its Asychronous but can be either super slow with emails or super fast. Exams are pretty easy
Taking this class online probably made it a little more difficult. There were 4 test and a final and that was all you were graded on. Bombed the first two test and went to every SI after that and did well enough to get a C to pass. Lectures are lengthy and detailed notes need to be taken on them.
