He is a friendly teacher. He is not an easy A teacher but I learned a lot from him. He has office hours to help you with your essay, and he will encouraged you to see him.
Very passionate about what he teaches, and very clear. not only is he a good teacher, hes also relly good with his students. Will drill english into you so much, you will never have to take another englsih class!
not an easy A. online classes are NOT for procrastinators.
he expects a lot out of you and grades hard but he's so passionate about what he's teaching, it's easy to grasp the material and stay interested. he'll go out of his way to meet with you outside of office hours --he's a phenomenal teacher.
Brilliant instructor but difficult.
If you take the online course be prepared.Overall a good teacher.
inspirational and brilliant. one of a kind.
Not an easy A. if your an english major very helpful but since i was not sometimes i felt like i didn't get everything. he will help if you meet out of class. lots of homework.
Not a class for an easy A. Knows his stuff, makes it interesting, but at times does not channel class time as well as could be. Definitely learned alot about creative writing and may take Eng 7 with him. If you aren't afraid of hard work, take Wyly, you will enjoy and come out the better for it.
If you are truely interesting in learning english and how to write, and how to critically read - take him. He is brilliant! You will have to do alot of work and cannot procrastinate, but it's worth it - if you work for an A you will get one.
I guess it's just me but I get easily annoyed at professors that begin their class taking a great deal talking to other students about things unrelated to class. There was just WAY TOO much "small talk".. just please get to the subject. I'm NOT here to hear about you and everyone's lives EVERY morning! Makes me feel like I'm wasting my time.
Super instructor with all the right stuff. Cares about his students' lives and success. Will work you hard, but you will come away with the tools to do well. I did.
Very dedicated teacher. He updates you on his office hours all the time in case you need any help and encourages you to go see him. Discussions are interesting if you're absorbing the material. Best english class I've ever taken in my entire academic life.
Mr. Wyly is definitely a great teacher...this is my first time taking an online class...many people said it would be hard, but he made it really easy and fun for me...i would really recommend taking him because he is a great teacher.
Michael was an awseome professor. English was always my worst subject and Wyly made it possible for me to be very successful in this class. He is probably one of the best English professors and will take you through the class step by step. If you have trouble in English (or with essays) please take Wyly. He was always there to help!
I took his learning community, great teacher! If you struggle with english and want to be better at writing essays, take his class. Even if you are great at english, take his class. He is very helpful, always makes time to be available if you need help. Class is not the easiest but you will walk out of his class feeling very confident in english.
I emailed this professor a few times about important matters and papers and one time I did not even get a reply back. This was an online course, I had thought it was just the nature for online schooling, but I have taken other online courses and the other professors got back to me right away.
The best english teacher I've had, bar none. Makes writing assignments interesting and is happy to help when you need it.
Warning! If you take this course online, you will not receive a response from this teacher if you ask questions. Grades are posted months after assignment was submitted. What is expected and what he grades for are like black and white. Be prepared for a struggle.
Brilliant,
I took his class online about a year ago and will never take a class from again. He never responded back to any of my e-mails,changed almost every assignment as students were finishing up with them (assignments were given on a weekly basis),and I don't think he even grades papers! All the comments on my papers were the exact same, including the grade
I took this prof online and he rocks. Don't listen to the nay-sayers. Fact is, they probably thought the course was going to be easy--like the other online courses I have taken. He challenges you to think and rewards hard work. Want to learn how to write? Take him.
makes me want to learn
The material is dull and laborious (8 essays total and numerous assignments). The course lectures are not engaging and often lack in clarity. He would leave questions unanswered and he seemed to lack an interest in the class (lost his passion?) or he was too busy to instruct the subject. Teaching methods are not innovative for distance learning.
Excellent teacher. He's very easy to understand and he's always available to help you out. Totally there to help you make it through.
Had to drop the class. He doesn't respond to email's or question's. He doesn't specifically tell you what is wrong with a paper, or how to fix what he finds to be wrong. His grammar is poor in his lectures, and the assignments are not clear. His class is the worst I've ever experienced at SCC. If you are looking for frustration, take his class.
super hard, super strict, too much homework! I am falling behind on other classes becuase of this demanding proff. Grades or responses not posted? How can you tell how you are doing? And I write plenty for a living! may have to drop or quit job and family to succeed!
Great online instructor. hard, but great
Very dedicated, but difficult instructor. Too many folks looking for an easy online exp in my opinion.
Very intense in-person. Great but tough online course. His lit course blew my mind.
I worked with Professor Wyly in the Literary Magazine class. It was an amazing opportunity, and an challenge. This has to be the most gratifying class I've ever taken. Better than working on the campus newspaper, the students actually get the majority of the say in what happens. As an editor in this class, YOU ARE THE DECISION MAKER.
Really enjoyed his class. Very dedicated and passionate. Always available to help.
Awesome! Professional, intelligent, very fun!
Mr. Wyly really taught me how to write. He can be a bit scattered but it's a part of his charm. Super smart. Talks a lot but is funny. Will spend hours with you in his office if you need it. And, he reads really really well--seriously, I could listen to him read poems all day and I don't even like poetry all that much.
Great online course overall. Very interesting assignments.
I really enjoyed his online English 1. It is challenging but the assignments are interesting and gave me something to write about. Also, he puts a lot of comments on your essays which I like as well. Very helpful. He does not accept late work though.
Michael Wyly is my favorite English teacher. His papers make you think and he really wants you to learn. He will teach you how to write. Take his class but expect to work. It's not an easy A but it's worth the work.
Took Prof Wyly for Creative Writing. This class was extremely fun & I'm taking Creative Writing 2 with him next semester. He makes the workshopping very fun and simple, allows us to do what we want with our writing and still provides room for us to learn how to improve. I feel like a much better writer after taking this class. Highly recommend it.
Very hard online course, We are in the finals week and he has not graded our midterms yet or responded to my 3 week old email. If you take this online course, be prepared to learn on your own. This is not an EASY class.
4 essays, midterm & final to do and takes him a month each to grade. Slacks. Everytime he says he will email us the prompt, never does.Takes him forever. I agree with the comment below i have him in class and he still hasnt return our midterm or essay 3 and its already finals week. Avoid him if you can
Not a very good teacher. a 50 min class and he spends the first half asking just wat we did during the weekend or talks about himself. wastes time and STILL expects us to know what we need to due for our essays when he doesnt even explain it. Takes forever to return essays. Not an easy A unless ur a naturally good writer. He expects tooo much
I had Michael Wyly for the Modern Novel as well as many other classes he instructed. The thing about him is that if you are taking his class for the grade you will sadly be disappointed. If you are truly passionate about literature and learning you will definitely be rewarded. His grades generally reflect the effort you put forth. Stick with him!
His literary magazine class is by far has the biggest impact on me out of all the classes I have taken at Solano. It changed the way I saw fiction and poetry while also giving me a strong sense of empowerment. If you are having trouble understanding literary techniques definitely take this class!
Very awesome class. I knew mythology would be something I would like but had no idea where one could take it. Seriously, change your life Solano peeps ans take this class.
I was rather excited to take the mythology course. I was not expecting the teacher to be camped out on gender issues in mythology for several months. He rarely gets essays back in a reasonable timespan, and is always late getting out prompts. Avoid if at all possible, he will frustrate you to know end.
Great teacher. TAKE THE LIT MAGAZINE CLASS! This class is not like a regular english class. It is really fun and interesting. ha! Wyly is extremely intelligent and very willing to help students in need of clarifications.
Took in Spring 2010. If you have nothing else to do with your time, take Eng. 58. The editors do make the decisions, mostly, but some of the "regular" editors are bullies and the mag will have the theme they want (which is basically the same every year now) This Lit. Mag. needs new blood. Wyly: lazy, confusing, and a procrastinator-but he's nice.
Excellent instructor. Teaches ENGL 1, ENGL 2, Creative Writing, Mythology (This is a rocking class), and ENGL 58 which is the Solano Community College Literary Magazine. He makes a boring subject fun and interesting. !CAUTION! His kids occasionally make unannounced visits to his classes. They are drop dead cute. !BEWARE!
Wyly is by far the best teacher I've ever had. He listens to your concerns and really clarifies what he expects out of you. There are never any surprises and you know exactly what's coming to you. I learned so much about writing from him. Plus, he's awesomely chill.
He's a good teacher. Funny. My only complaint is he's grading on papers is unbelievably hard, so procrastinating on any of his papers would be stupid. But, he does make the class interesting.
I took Wyly for Creative Writing I this semester, and he's by far one of the best teachers I've ever had. He has insights into the writing craft that are thought-provoking and unique. He has generous office hours - use them! He is one of those teachers that genuinely wants to help you.
Professor Wyly is a very good writer. I took this class online and even his lectures are very scholarly. He has taught me how to reach higher levels in my writing. He does grade fairly on his papers, he does expect you to follow MLA format. Although in the real world you dont have to use collegiate writing frequently, you will know how to do so.
English 18 is the Introduction to Mythology course and you can only take it with Professor Wyly. This is a fun outgoing class. There is a lot of discussion, never had to take any class quizzes and hardly took class notes. The main focus is on the Essays, which if you do all the reading and have your own opinion, then you will do great.Overall, fun!
I took professor Wyly's class online and I found his lectures to be helpful. He does teach you to push your level of writing. One negative is he grades very late, you have to wait awhile to get grades back. Overall take his class in person, although he is good online, I think there is more clarity on campus.Or take online he wants you to succeed.
He extended almost every single due date because either he hadn't graded a previous paper or didn't feel that the class knew enough about the topic to write a good paper. He's a great teacher though, totally passionate about teaching, and will make you a better writer. Take him if you can!
Finally, I feel like a college student. Super interesting. Thanks, Prof!(Plus, he's hot. :P )
Took this class online and had a terrible experience. Hes a nice person but his online class is extremly disorganized, hard to follow, and just incredibly frusturating. He takes a very long time to grade your papers, so much that you dont even get feed back back before your next paper to know what to work on.Also a hard grader!! Impossible class!
Super tight class. Loved everything except how busy he is. Still--always available during his office hours and always there to help.
Nice guy, but prepare to tear your hair out in agony when you can't read any of the comments he writes on your essays and you can't get a hold of him to have him decipher them. Very knowledgeable, but has too much on his plate and is constantly returned papers late.
Love him!!! And I'll be taking more from him cause ot that. His brain is too big, and it's awesome. Go boss man wyly.
He's passionate about his subjects, cares about his students, and is always willing to lend a helping hand. He's slow to grade & return papers but it's WORTH IT; he gives extensive feedback. I've taken many classes with him (ENGL 018, 002, 006, 007) and have never regretted it. I esp. recommend mythology (018) or creative writing (006/007).
Wonderful teacher, and wonderful class. He is very passionate and knows what he is talking about. He's here for his students, and if you don't pass his class it's because you didn't take advantage of his office hours. He's an awesome person and teacher, and every one should aspire to take at least one class with Michael Wyly.
Took his online class. DEFINITELY recommend reading the book he assigns. It's an English teacher in a book! Con: took FOREVER to know grades.
Extremely good class. Although he's busy with a billion other things in his life, he really wants you to succeed and will honestly make time for you one on one to make sure you get an A in his class! Only homework comes in the 4 essays and 4 Reading Responses.
Easily one of Solano's best English teachers. Wyly will help you become a better writer, critical thinker, & overall student. He's passionate about his subjects. He's very busy; you'll have to be patient for office hours. Still, if you need extra help, you'll get it. His magazine course (ENGL 058) was one of the coolest courses I've ever taken.
Best English teacher I've had in such a long time! I had a really hard time at first because I went to a school in Fairfield and the I was not prepared. TAKE HIM! I am taking him for eng 2. He is so helpful!
Have to say, one of the best teachers I have ever had. It can be a lot of work, and I would get frustrated, but he was always available to help. Others in the class backed me up when I pointed this out. Best part is that I feel like I can handle college writing now. Great class.
Wyly is helpful and care about his students however, I felt he didn't know what he was doing. We rarely got around to doing what we were supposed to do, he doesn't know his student's names. There's really no grade book, when I give him my progress report he puts random grades. Isn't very helpful. Essays are returned WEEKS later.
He's ok. I liked him the during English 1 but got annoyed with him during Eng 2 just because he marked me off for dumb things and gradely so harshly the 2nd semester. Takes forever to pass papers back and his hand writing sucks. Will help you fix your essays but still it doesnt help when it comes to your final grade. If you want an easy A avoid him
Great prof. Great class. What else to say? Take him!
Wyly really cares about his students. He takes their success and failures very personally which I found admirable. I really do appreciate him as a teacher. I learned a lot from him and he definitely knows what he's talking about. I highly recommend taking at least one of his classes. Great teacher, great person.
Took his class twice now. I will not do that again. Lets just say that he sees the world a lot differently than I do.
Love Professor Wyly! A little slow on the grading and delivery of assignments, but he is passionate about what he does. Will definitely take him for English 002. His office hours are to be used, not ignored!
I love this man! He's a great professor, super friendly, and truly cares about his students. Get to know him if you get the opportunity :) and SVR is a great class, to take, too!
I dislike English but love this class. Definitely taking him again. Love that he likes his job and works for students.
Took him for creative writing. Super helpful and knows everything. Loved this class!
Absolutely LOVE him. He is smart and passionate about what he does. Now, his class isn't easy but if you put in the effort it is totally worth it. He will work with you if you need help, you just have to show up to his office hours. I would take him again without thinking!
Professor Wyly, in my humble opinion, is a valuable asset to the English department at Solano. He is a thoughtful and considerate professor that will bend over backwards if you come and visit him during his office hours, but won't exactly reply to your e-mails or collect/return essays when he says he will. HOWEVER, he WILL satiate your anxiety.
Great class.
I have taken Wyly for 4 different classes now, and I would happily take him again. He's hilarious, helpful and well-loved by his students. He IS a tough grader but this is better for you in the long run because you will know how to write a brilliant essay for any class in the future. He is always willing to stay after class to help you.
Mr. Wyly is absolutely passionate about English and he knows what he is talking about. he is more than happy to help with your essays in office hours. He is a VERY hard grader. I would turn in essays that i thought were the best i have ever written and recieve C's. You must put a lot of effort in this class. Oh and good luck reading his handwriting
Mr. Wyly is great! I took this class because I love mythology and didn't care that it's only an elective for my major. The discussions in class were amazing, I highly recommend him, this class and would totally take it again if I could! I saved my books from this class because I liked them so much. How often do you do that? missing a few days is ok
Took his creative writing class. Very intense and changed the way i think about writing. I'd never writtten a poem in my life until this class but I really liked what i wrote. plus it met my GE for transfer.
He's an outstanding lecturer, but doesn't follow through on his potential to be an outstanding teacher. He'll assign long papers or which you'll tear your hair out, and he doesn't give you feedback to improve before assigning much more, often waiting months to grade any papers. He's got an excessive workload, but it's not fair that we suffer for it
He cares about his students but at the same time he is also really pretentious and self righteous. There are regular reading journals through the course and several essays. He grades these really harshly.
I really want to rate Wyly higher because I think he's a good teacher, but he lacks any organization or plan. Everything we receive for an online class was posted last minute. This resulted in work during Thanksgiving break that was posted the day the break began. He grades the slowest of any professor I've ever had. His content is great though.
Wyly can go off tangent, but he's very funny. Most of your feedback is given by your peers, but as long as you submit things (and try), you'll be in good shape to pass with a good grade. You should keep up with reading assigned works because you never know when he'll use it or not, so it's good to read to be safe. Fun class, fun teacher.
He takes months to grade assignments. I have 2 essays done since the last time he graded an essay. How do you know your doing well in the class with NO feedback. He says he will comment suggestions for your work. never does. This is VERY frustrating. You have no clue how you are doing in the class. He also grades very hard. final was 40% of grade!
Did you know Wyly is the ONLY creative writing teacher in either Solano and Napa (county) Colleges? The ONLY one! Students have no choice. WHY? I keep on hearing Wyly is a very smart man and yet a busy man. Yes, I agree, hes brilliant, but to forgive and let slide his poor follow through because hes chosen to be so busy. No! I have yet to get any
I've never met someone who cares so much for his students, both during class and after too. He helped me with class, life, and made me a better writer. Loves his subject matter which helps imo.
He is an awesome teacher. Cares about his students, gives great feedback so that are able to improve. Makes lectures interesting.
Online course was totally my favorite. He was an easy grader and his stuff was interesting.
I wrote 40 pages total over the semester in papers. There is also a lot of reading and none of what we did in the class is easy material this isnt like most classes at Solano, you actually have to use your brain. If you take this class you will become smarter, better at writing essays, and a faster reader.
I took his mythology class and let me tell you, HE WAS PHENOMENAL. I highly recommend him! He was compassionate and a great lecturer. Do be prepared to read the myths assigned or you might be a bit lost in the class. I loved how this course psychologically analyzed the myths assigned. Would take again. Put effort and time and you'll pass.
This class started off good but he assigns so many things that he can not keep up the grading. He gives feedback but by the time you get it you don't need it. He assigns work on holidays and during finals week.
He cares about his students. He likes to meet with students and will help you anyway possible but if you are depending on the grade to graduate you should check in with him often because he is a slow grader.
I took a summer class online with Professor Wyly. Essay expectations were unclear, he'd take well over 24 hours to get back to you, and he wouldn't give us access to school work until the day that it was due. Aside from those three things, he wouldn't grade our essays until the next essay was due. If you're taking online English, don't take Wyly.
I took this classes as my summer class along with my communications class. And let me say I would NOT recommend taking this class. Expeditions are nearly impossible. And his grading rubric is insane. We would turn in our papers and wouldnt receive any feedback until our next paper was due.
Took his class and it was really fun and it whenever you had any questions he was extremely easy to get help from. He also was flexible when things happened. Will definitely take a class by him again.
I'm so bummed with this class. He has the potential to be such an amazing professor, when he does give feedback it's in depth and you can tell he's very passionate about what he does. I just think he takes on too much and ends up behind with grading and even (weeks) posting assignments. I might try taking him in person, but I won't take online.
Really easy class, about or less than an hour a week of work, except there is 4 essays that you write about 1200 words each, if you go to his office hours he will help you a ton and if you just do it on your own and follow the instructions you can easily get an A on all of them. Basically just complete the assignments and you'll be good.
Great teacher, office hour access is golden to get clarity on assignments and essay structure. He gives great feedback that is actually motivational and makes you want to do better next time, a nice guy and passionate about English and reading diverse subjects, story, poetry, plays, from all ethnic and categorical backgrounds. I enjoyed this class!
Prof. Wyly was great - always reachable and is very understanding. I had a lot going on this semester and he let me turn in my assignment late after I reached out to let him know what's going on. Work is easy, just get it done (I should take my own advice). Wrote four essays this semester, all with clear expectations of what they should entail. :)
I took him online and though I hate English, it turned out to be fairly easy with him. Every week we just read about 3 pages of a lecture, read a couple short examples and do a discussion on them and a test of about 5 questions you read about. About 4 fairly short essays compared to my old teacher.
Took this Eng002 for Fall Online. Great professor! I would honestly recommend Weekly 5 question quiz and 1 reading with discussion. He's open to all ideas- as long as you can prove your point on you essay/discussions, you will get a good grade! He does take quite a while to grade and give feedback. Easy to pass. Last reading was Hamlet.
Wyly is really nice but rambles endlessly. PRO: next to no assignments CON: he can't ever stay on track and won't teach anything Easy class to take but infuriating if you actually want to learn anything or hone your craft. If you're really new to creative writing and know NOTHING, Wyly is a great jumping-off point. Otherwise, he's a headache.
He is one of my favorite teachers. He goes above and beyond for his students and inspires the creative writing students. Super supportive and easy to talk to. It was an easy A because I enjoyed the class so much. If you don't like writing then his is not the class for you. Grades fair. You will do a lot of reading though, writers read anyway!
Gives out way too many essays, 2 midterms with 2 essays each, and a final with 2 essays. The prompts for said essays are hard to interpret, and it makes the essay hard to write because the prompts are unnecessarily complexly worded, and complicated.
Professor Wyly was an okay professor for ENG001. He barely assigns any homework, but it's straightforward when he does. There are a total of 4 essays that you need to complete and a final(easy A). His rubrics for work are very detailed and tell you what he wants, and he gives great feedback. The only downside is that he never stops talking.
Not a bad professor, not a great one. LOVES to hear himself talk/write. Overcomplicates his writing unnecessarily. Emphasizes communication, but only wants to schedule zooms in a small window. Gives good feedback (weeks after the fact), but it is bias based and not effort based. Falls behind on grading very quickly (3 weeks+). Passable but tough.
Professor Wyly was great for English002. Class consisted of weekly disccusion posts, short quiz of readings, and 3 essays. I 100% recommend attending his office hours when it comes to the essays, it is THE KEY to get an A on your paper. He provides great feedback and helps you get the highest grade possible. Not an easy A but a great course.
Professor Wyly's ENG002 is a mixed bag - can be tricky, but he's open-minded and gives good feedback. Assignments are manageable, and unstuckstudy proved a helpful study tool alongside the textbook. Worth taking if you put in the effort.
I took all three classes in the creative writing program. The last two were out of control. Half hour monologues and months to grade. Class time was wasted and although it was an in-person class, the class really took place on Canvas. The only comment I got on my final (portfolio) was that I could send an email to get actual meaningful feedback.
I really enjoyed my time in his class, he seemed to really want me to succeed. I will admit that he does talk a lot and it's usually off topic. I don't really have a problem with that, but others might. I think that I genuinely improved in my writing skills here, more than in any other writing class, due to his feedback.
Wyly was so nice. I wish I went to his office hours because they for sure would've helped to secure my grade more. I didn't end up going to any but he always left comments on what I could improve on my essays and allowed me to submit late when I expressed difficulty. Overall nice professor and I enjoyed his class. :3
