Professor Ybarra seems like a really nice guy. This class is as dull as can be and he understands that. Lecture is not necessary to go to after the midterm; he reads from the slides and it doesn't really apply to anything you need to know anyway. This class isn't as bad as it could be but it's definitely not fun.
worked hard to provide relevant studies. Available at office hours. liked the way he connected theory with case study examples.
Subject is not my first choice but professor is very smart and the material was difficult but right. Need to do the reading. Again, need to do the reading.
Only went to class for quizzes, he puts the lectures online and posts study guide so it is very easy to do well in the class, take soc with him for sure
Great professor. Seems really apologetic about having to teach you stats. Don't bother buying the book, we didn't use it once. Understand the math and you'll do fine. No trick questions. Nice guy.
Such a great teacher! I took sociology because i couldn't get into psych but it's become my favorite class.
The class is pretty much a few things to memorize. He understands people want to do well and thus gives a study guide for each class. The lectures can get boring but its not his fault, he is teaching what he has to teach. He tries to make jokes, and they are funny simply because he thinks they are funny. Take this teacher
I honestly hate this class. His lectures are extremely boring and he races through slides before you have the chance to copy them down (but he does post the slides online). His exams deviate from the study guides which makes it very difficult to focus on what to study. The class itself is somewhat easy, but has a really, really irritating workload
Your success in the class is based off memorizing what was in the readings and on the lectures. Not very exciting class for supposedly being about sports. Ybarra does nothing to help make the class more or less interesting. Just do the readings and study the lecture slides and it should be an easy A.
The lectures can be interesting at times but he definitely rambles on about useless information. The exams were harder than they should have been for how easy the subject matter is. Overall the class is interesting but he is not that great of a prof.
Don't waste your time. Never thought a class relating to sports could be so boring. Terrible, terrible lecturer who expects you to memorize random information that he deems important. Steer away from him if you want to take a sociology class.
Ybarra is pretty nice and seems to have an interest in the material he's teaching. However, he is SO boring. I love sports, so I figured this class would be great. No. Just no. It's pointless. The readings are super long, dense, and unhelpful. This was the first semester the class was offered, but it needs a LOT of work.
Easy lectures! Everything was put in clear powerpoint format, and most lecture slides were posted online. His use of youtube clips also helps keep things interesting. If you go to lectures and do the assigned readings, the class is an easy A. Really nice guy.
Professor Ybarra is a very intelligent guy, but his lectures are extremely boring. The class is a guaranteed A if you show up to lecture and take notes. I don't know why people are complaining that the test were hard because all you have to do is study the lecture slides, which are posted online. Also, I haven't read ANYTHING and I got an A.
Professor Ybarra is a great person but a terrible professor. He rambles on random tangents unrelated to what students are expected to know on the exams. Making it not only difficult know what to study but also impossible to focus with his lack of enthusiasm and dull teaching methods. Not to mention left blind on 60% of you receive your final grade.
I took this class to be an easy A. While the class was not a lot of work, the exams were unnecessarily difficult. It was always unclear whether we should focus of the sports information or on the sociological aspects, making studying extremely difficult. Prof Ybarra was not very helpful in office hours and his lectures were extremely boring.
Lectures were boring and the class was disorganized. There is no way of knowing your grade until the end. The exams were ridiculously hard and very difficult to study for.
Worst Class I've ever taken. Lectures were boring and read right off the slides. Asked to memorize worthless facts. If your not a soc major...take something else.
Prof Ybarra is always organized and his lectures cover a lot of material. I thought it would be ESPN-like but now I can't watch ESPN without thinking about all the back stories (concussion, racial & gender equality, economics, etc.) Really powerful class.
I took this class thinking it would be ridiculously easy/it sounded cool. It wasn't THAT hard, but the exam was way more difficult than anyone anticipated it would be... way harder than it needed to be, and it was difficult to know what to focus on. I would recommend taking it if you are actually interested in both soc and sports. otherwise.. eh.
really down to earth and helpful. extremely well organized and clear presentation of material. very nice guy
Professor Ybarra is honestly the best teacher I have ever had. I have taken 2 courses with him and wish I could take another. The material is not necessarily easy, but he does a great job of making the material easy to understand. He is extremely clear and organized. He is very helpful and wants his students to succeed. All around great guy!
Organized, clear, helpful. Lectures are fine and important to attend. Good professor.
Very disorganized class, but extremely interesting.
great guy, very helpful
The lectures were extremely dull. He simply reads off of his powerpoint slides. Tests were unreasonably difficult. They involve a great deal of useless memorization. I would definitely not recommend taking this course.
Lectures are pretty boring minus a few of the videos included. The exams cover a lot of material but aren't bad if you study. Essays can be difficult. Overall okay class.
Excellent class!Went to office hours, too, and prof. Y was very helpful.
Ybarra is a good guy but his lectures are always early in the morning and attendance isn't necessary so very few people actually go because you can do well in the class without going. You need to study for the tests to do well but none of the information is very difficult. No need to buy the textbooks because he summarizes them in the lecture slide
Professor Ybarra is fine. This class was OK, the lectures were 1 12 hours and he went right up to the last minute and I found myself incredibly bored most of the time. Attending lectures is important though because you get 4 tests in the class and some of the info is from lectures. If you like sociology, Ybarra isn't a bad choice.
SOC 102 with Professor Ybarra is an easy class. More than half of the class got an A. Lectures are pretty boring; would recommend splitting up lectures with friends to get notes. Discussion is mandatory. Lecture Slides are rarely posted online. You can boost your grade over 10% with extra credit. Quizzes have clear cut study guides.
Great guy. Great course. Lots of reading, but interesting reading. Would recommend
Soc 102 was a class on sports and I love sports, but Ybarra made it boring. Also, considering the topics revolved around sports, I don't think the class helped me get a good education into introductory sociology.
Professor Ybarra is great. His lectures seem long, but I would take his SOC 295 class again. He sometimes brings in cool speakers and shows videos which are interesting. Great guy.
4 words: easy peasy lemon squeezy. Don't go to class you're wasting time he posts his notes. Just participate once/discussion, do at least some of the extra credit, and answer the study guides before the quiz. When you do the essay, toss in a couple quotes, they love it.
Ybarra may be knowledgeable, but he is not as funny as he thinks he is, and expects way too much from his students. He will assign 50-100 pages of reading a class and expects students to know every word of the work. His explanations of concepts are confusing and is deathly boring to listen to.
this is by far one of the worst classes I have ever taken. the teacher makes you memorize worthless facts for tests and makes it extremely confusing to know what to study for. he assigns 100 page readings for every class period and the readings are extremely redundant and not related to the class. he literally reads off his slides in class . he is
Ybarra's lectures are very interesting but the class is extremely easy. You can not do a single reading all semester as and as long as you show up to discussion and do the study guides for quizzes and exams you should easily get an A. One of the easier classes at this school.
Sports and Society. Very interesting class if you like sports, extremely easy A. Quizzes, exams, and papers but everything is laid out for you so it is very easy to do well. So much extra credit it's comical. Ybarra is the man.
Ybarra was awesome. Though his lectures were boring, if you are looking for an easy A, TAKE HIS CLASS. As long as you do the study guide, you will be fine on quizzes and exams. A ton of extra credit as well that will boost your grade.
lectures are soooo drawn out a boring. He moves through slides extremely slowly and rambles on a lot. Easy class though with a lot of extra credit and hand-holding for assignments. Attendance not necessary except for the occasional in-class quiz.
Nice guy, the lectures are long. The readings are cool and the papers are a good length. Interesting topic.
Overall an easy class. You get a lot of extra credit for being in class. The reading is heavy, but since the writing is argument based you do not have to dive deeply into all the issues. Quizzes are easy if you take notes and just skim the readings. Definitely would take this class again! Just stay on top of the readings.
Ybarra is a nice guy, but his lectures aren't focused and drift all over the place. However, I do recommend showing up to class because there is a ton of in-class extra credit that will boost your grade substantially. There were 6 total essays plus weekly Journal assignments, and A LOT of readings that you should prob just skim
Prof Ybarra is a really nice guy, tries his best to keep lectures interesting. Offers tons of in-class extra credit for just coming to class, highly recommend going. No tests, just "pop-quizzes" (he gives you advance notice) and papers. Definitely an easy A, pretty interesting material as well
Ybarra is a nice professor, he tries to help students with extra credits and the selection of reading material was interesting. However, the lectures are terribly boring and students often get lost in the explanations.
Here's all you need to know. No exams. GSIs matter so hopefully you get a good one. Come to class he offers lots of extra credit just for showing up. Quizzes are hardest part of the class. Lots of reading but you really only have to do the ones at the beginning of the semester. Work decently hard on the papers and you'll be fine. Easy A.
My guy Mike is a real hoot. Yeah, you've gotta read to pass the in-class quizzes, but the class isn't too bad. Turn things in on time and show up to class for the occasional extra credit and you're golden.
I really enjoyed Prof Ybarra. He is really passionate about the subject and tries to bring in a bunch of modern examples to connect the material. He does give occasional quizzes, but will always let you know a week ahead of time and they're not that difficult. No tests, just a few papers that were fairly easy to write. Definitely a great class!
Ybarra is fairly boring in lecture. The class itself is very interesting and easy and a good GSI makes a world of difference. He just isn't very engaging and is a little snarky. He does offer a lot of extra credit so it's an easy A... my grade moved from a B to an A when he put the extra credit in at the end of the semester.
Gives extra credit in class. Gives out study guide for the exam and will give you specific hints about the exam if you come to office hours. Very genuine and has that grandpa feel to him ya know. Went to his office hours for extra credit and ended up talking to him for a long time about issues. The guy loves his readings.
This was about the 2016 election. Lectures usually had videos so that was nice, and he sometimes gives you extra credit for showing up! Have quizzes in class sometimes but he warns you beforehand. A few papers, but weren't too bad as long as you go to class and read the MANY readings.
He tries to help out his students by offering extra help or extra credit. I had him for two classes and he really cares about your education. Yes, there will be things to read but that is college. He is one of the best professors I have had at Michigan. A GREAT PROFESSOR FOR A FRESHMAN as he care and the material isn't that hard.
Ybarra is one of the best professors at this university. He genuinely cares about his students learning the material. He always makes himself accessible outside of class for extra help and even offers exam review sessions if wanted by the students. There is also extra credit offered! I would take every class with him if I could.
Take notes and be diligent in test preparation and you'll get an A. Study guides are allowed to be used during exams, so make sure those are great. If you give just a little effort in this class you'll be fine.
Prof Ybarra is there for his students. I like that he is invested in giving us material that makes us think. He seems to care about the process of learning and I respect that. I'd take a class by him again.
The class was pretty straight forward, alot of memorizing small details but as long as you take the time to do so, its not bad at all. Alot of EC opportunities.
Class is cake if you can bring yourself to do the bare minimum. He is really friendly and cares for students. Show up for all the lectures since there are random extra credit opportunities. Take advantage of the study guide he posts and if he offers a review session the day before the exam make sure to attend.
The lectures aren't the best, but it is an easy class. The discussions are SO helpful. If you want an easier stats class, he is def the way to go.
I went to the first two weeks of lecture. Never watched/went to one again. I am terrible at math but the slideshows and practice problems taught me everything I needed to know. The labs really make or break your experience in the course. The homework can get time-consuming. The exams were super easy though.
Probably one of my professors so far. He cares about his students and his material. He is very straightforward and I had never been confused about his material. Show up to lecture where he offers extra credit sometimes, take notes, and fill out the study guides and you'll be good with an A.
His lectures were very boring and not helpful for there exam. Going to class was a waste of time, however the discussion section professors very awesome. Would not recommend his class, one of my least favorites
No need to go to lecture. Just go to lab and examples of everything will be worked through and simplify material. Easy exams (you get notes sheets) and homework due every Friday so pick a lab early in the week if possible. Prof did have step-by-step examples in lecture but lectures were unnecessarily wordy which is why I stuck to just going to lab.
Professor Ybarra is very knowledgeable about the course material, however he lectures in a way that is a little boring at times. He shows lots of videos which counterbalances that point, but you could watch lectures online and not lose any value from this course.
Don't take his 100s courses because the 4 tests are extremely difficult. He is a tough grader. That said, his 300s course is much better - essay-based and small-group. When he presents to smaller groups he is more engaging; in large seminars he is very disconnected. I think this speaks a lot to his conflicting reviews.
Dr. Ybarra isn't bad but nothing stood out for me. Lectures were a bit boring and sometimes the information was repetitive. DO WELL on the tests, they are not that hard but you still need to remember the information. He is very clear on what it's on. Discussion is easy points, but there are make ups available if you miss it. LOTS OF READING!!
I wouldn't say Ybarra is a super nice guy, but lectures were only an hour long and recorded. Labs were required, but mine only lasted 30 minutes and was really helpful. The concepts weren't difficult and you get four pages of notes on exams so it is easy to do well. If deciding between stats 250 and this class choose this one.
Overall pretty good, main comments are that there is a huge amount of readings for a 100-level course, and you may want to reconsider taking 102 for distribution if you are not super interested in sociology. Otherwise, if you are, this course was very interesting, and once you get into the lecture you learn a lot.
Be ready to read a textbook chapter or two as well as 3 to 4 other reading assignments per week, Lectures are painfully boring and sociology is rarely referenced in class, the main focus of the class is on "sports" rather than sociology. However, as someone who did not do a single reading throughout the semester, it's a rather easy class.
This class is reading heavy, there is one homework assignment per week with a couple off weeks for exams. Lecture slides are fairly straightforward, but attending lab and having a quality GSI is crucial to success in this course, as some topics covered can be confusing. Wouldn't really say it's a social science course.
Professor Ybarra's lectures were painfully boring. If you enjoy someone who reads of slides loaded with text, doesn't engage with students during lecture, and assigns endless readings, this is the class for you. Discussion sections were the most engaging part of the course, and he doesn't even lead them. Find another Sociology class if you need one
The lectures were so incredibly boring and unhelpful, and he handled the GSI strike really poorly. He was unnecessarily rude and unfair, both in his grading scheme and his treatment of students. This class largely depended on your GSI, so had there not been a strike I likely would not have cared, but alas. Having to watch his lectures was painful.
If you have a passion for sports, this is the class for you! Professor Ybarra covers fun content, while relating it to the broader sociological world. The GSIs were great, and there are many opportunities to have fun discussions in section. Ybarra offers tons of extra credit, while the only drawback is the heavy reading and memorization focus.
Lectures were always painfully boring, he took over two months to grade our first essay and did not release the scores until after our final exam, the exams are painful with an essay, at least 35 questions, and 4-6 free response questions, and he assigns a ridiculous amount of readings and there will be questions on the exams about ALL readings
Not a hard class but boring and slow class-wide discussions daily
Math isn't my strong suit and I didn't touch the textbook once so maybe that's why I wasn't successful but unsure. I would suggest taking stats 250 instead of this if you want an "easy" QR fulfillment, but that's just me. The work was tedious and difficult at times.
He is a very boring lecturer and this class was no fun
Tbh lectures were boring but missing just one can put you SO behind. It went from 0-100 pretty quickly but he warned us of that. He is very kind, accomodating, and makes lots of dad jokes. GSI section will make or break your grade. Mine was amazing. LOTS of homework so stay on top of it but exams were decently easy. Great introduction to stats.
Ybarra is kind, accommodating, and respectful. Lectures were extremely dry and never important for assignments or grades. Grades were mostly based on a long essay you write the whole semester plus discussion section w/ GSI. Easy enough, but unfortunate that grade is based on one really big essay.
Very reading heavy and 3 papers plus an extensive student choice assignment and 3 exams. Exams require a lot of studying and lectures were boring and hard to engage in. However, he does offer a lot of extra credit which I would take advantage of.
This class isn't extremely interesting but professor Ybarra is very clear and fair. Lectures are a bit dry but theyre only 50 minutes. Lots of extra credit offered throughout the semester, cheat sheets on exams, and a clear homework schedule. A good math class for students who don't typically like math.
Professor Ybarra is a kind and respectful instructor. The lectures were not the most engaging, but he made them applicable to class assignments. The assigned readings are kind of dry and dense, so you can just skim them (I stopped reading them after a couple months lol). The class is kind of graded off of few things so just be aware of that.
This class is hybrid and each asynchronous lecture has slides. The slides can work for the homework. Ybarra is funny and caring. He is also realistic with this course. The averages are usually between 85-90% on exams. If he is teaching take it and if you can have Vicky as a gsi do it. (All the gsi's are great tho) You also get cheat sheets
The class was very straightforward. The exams were open-note and similar to the homework. If you do the homework and you will do great in Soc210.
his lectures are boring so i wouldn't even watch them. all of my learning was from my GSI. very easy class and made me like statistics.
Ybarra was an excellent instructor. His lecture videos were long, and weekly assignments built up quickly, but that's the nature of the course. He conveyed material clearly, and optional lecture workshops allowed students to ask questions. You can't expect to achieve a good grade without putting in the time and work, but Ybarra is very supportive.
Ybarra talks really slow, but many of his lectures are hybrid and can be watched in 2x. However, the workload and assignments in this class are confusing, heavy, and incredibly irrelevant at times (waste of precious research project time). I do not reccomend this class, but if you have to take it, do not do it with other work-heavy classes.
Maybe this is because I took a stats class with similar content to SOC210 in high school, but I honestly never needed to watch Ybarra's lectures to get a good sense of the material - I mostly just took notes off of the lecture notes provided because the recorded lectures were just him reading slowly off the slides. Go to lab sections though!!!!!
