Ladies, I have it on good authourity that he's super hot
he's super smart and cute... but watch out for the war books
A really nice guy, not the greatest taste in books, and sexy!
not very challenging material. kinda boring.
looks a lot like Pete Sampress and talks like Jeff Goldblum
Easily the best teacher or prof I've ever had. Soft spoken, great choice of text

*Wicked* English Prof, the best English instructor I've had throughout school.
Resembles "Mr. Bergstrom" from the simpsons!!! He's a wonderful prof. Very compassionate, very funny. He is organized and choses interesting and controversial material at times. Wish I could take more classes of his!
Had this prof for American Lit. The books he chose were excellent (for the most part) and his lectures were always interesting. I really enjoyed his class.
he's very understanding towards students when it comes to difficult circumstances. marking can be a bit blase. sometimes helpful in office hours, sometimes not, but an extremely knowledgeable and kind prof nonetheless.
Clear and funny, helps make even dry material more interesting and engaging
He chooses interesting books and he's VERY well-read. Our essay marks depended on the TA, so I'm not sure how hard he is. For in-class essays, he gives you many topics to choose from, so I guess he IS easy.
Nice guy, funny and very open to student comments. Discusses broad themes, but doesn't tell you what to think; lets students make up their own minds about the material. Not hot, but reminds me of Jennifer Beals's boyfriend in "Flashdance."
i always looked forward going to his class because his lectures were always interesting!
american lit was so interesting! book choice was so awesome...however...if you're looking for an easy mark, you're not going to get one here. So many ppl in my class who are normally "good" at english didn't get their usual marks. He's HARD.

knows what he's talking about. very nice and encourages independent thoughts. book choices were good, but a little too much american lit.
ugh... don't get me started
thought i hate english, this class was awesome! maybe because it was easy? seriously, just go to class, take notes on everything you hear in class.. like peoples opinions and thoughts.. regurjetate them in essays and in exams and youll do awesome!
He is very passionate about Literature! He does know his stuff! He can be too high-faluting though - wish he would be less academic.
worst eng class ever...he sucks at teaching... can't deliver his ideas across... always goes off topic and talks about irrelevant things... horrible book choice... o_O
pretty bad english class... difficult to understand because just keep throwing weird words out & explaining them vaguely. Poor organization of lectures... haven't gotten a good understanding of books he chose
enjoyed the course--great prof
The readings are exciting and the discussions have been interesting.
not the most straightforward prof.
Really, really great prof. I have really enjoyed reading the selections so far - they have been a treat! He leads such interesting, respectful, chilled out discussions, and always makes you feel as if what you have said is valid. I am learning so much from this course!
this guy is amazing, totally laid back and interesting, materials are good
cynical, but knows his stuff. can be funny too.
The best prof in the department. Awsome reading list and interesting discussions. He is the smartest man ever, just go see him in his office and he'll help you through anything. High recommendations. I wish he taught more classes!
Here's the deal: If this was a movie about crazy college kids, he would be the "hip" teacher who can "relate". I really think he is playing an angle. And let me tell you, young females students eat it up. Dr.Zeitlin, if you are reading this, you have a fountain of young, hot university girls to tap.

Best, BEST professor I have ever encountered. His class will definately be my most memorable educational experience at UBC.This is a class to expand your mind, and make you a better human being.Thank you Dr. Zeitlin!!!
Prof. Zeitlin was an awesome teacher. He was funny and had amazing insights into the texts we studied. The course content was interesting and he made everyone feel comfortable. I would totally recommend him and any course he taught. Also VERY cute - and ladies I didn't notice a wedding ring!
He's got a female fan club, which is infuriating and makes him seem a bit sleazy. Other than that, good glass, great texts, fair marker. I guess it was really just that fan club that left a foul taste in my mouth, because other than that he would have been great.

An alrite prof, but rambles a lot. Arguments are sometimes left dangling. TA's did most of the work yes... Final was okay, but marking is done by TA anyways

I could sit in class with my eyes closed and listen to this man talk for hours. His voice is like honey.

I found him to be extremely boring. I fell asleep at least once a month, and his lectures usally went nowhere. His TA's did all of the work. All he did was ramble on and on in class for an hour.
I found him quite interesting and knowledgeable. He was well organized. I guess it depends on which TA you have if you are wondering about grades. He is not too bad to look at either. To summarize, he was a GREAT prof!
I have no idea how he became a professor. This guy talking is like listening to an empty can clanking. And I agree with the comment before. His lectures really do not go anywhere. Teaches worse than my high school English teacher. And I wish he'd stop saying, Absolutely, absolutely.
easy prof. notes are horrible. he knows wut hes talkin about but the half the class does not. attending class is not important
I like how Zeitlin teaches. He doesn't impose too many of his ideas so that the class has room to brainstorm, but imposes enough to keep discussion going. He's a fair marker and really kind-hearted. You can go to him with any problems you might have. Great prof, great class.
Dr Zeitlin is very good at keeping the class engaged. He is more than willing to go through essays with you and is very quick to respond to inquiries. I was simply filling a requirement for a degree, but truly did enjoy his teaching and this class.
Pretentious and gets his ta's to do everything. I didn't take this class to learn about post-modern theory, post-structuralism or freud (i can do that in my core classes). Guy doesn't even have office hours for his first year students. And yet people seem to be in awe of his "vast" intellect. Just seems like he's posing to me.
I had this prof in my first year. I honestly did not get anything out of the lectures. The points he made were baseless and most of the time he would just start going off topic.
Besides being an engaging lecturer and competent speaker in general, this is guy is smokin' hot. That dinky little chili pepper on the rating just doesn't do him justice. Take his classes and you won't regret it, but don't you dare steal him away from me. I like to picture us reading romantic literature together somewhere in Paris...
This is a seminar class, so most of the talking was done by the students. Nonetheless, he always gave positive feedback and made sure everyone's opinions were heard. Very helpful in emails/office hours
Seminar class is a great medium for this prof. He encourages everyone's thoughts and makes everyone feel like their opinions are brilliant! Or we were a phenominally strong class :) Zeitlin fosters love for literature in his students and is less hung up on the rules of academia than the average prof. Laid back and practically an encyclopedia!
great lecturer. cute smile. REALLY easy work load-the term paper is realtively short compared to other 1st year classes. marking and everything depends on ur TA so make sure u get a good one, my TA was a bore but i reallyyy wish i had BRIAN!!! >.< awesome readings tho overall-especially the 2 at the end. if u like reading this is an awesome class!!
Extremely incoherent prof. I sat through most of his lectures thinking "wtf". On second thought, going to class was probably a huge waste of my time. This class was absolutely useless.. it really did not teach me much. As previous posters have noted, your marks do depend on your TA, but I don't believe you can choose what TA you get.
Great lecturer. Funny, even if he does tell the same jokes over and over again. Encouraging. Most of your mark comes from yout TA though.
I ended up liking this class mostly because of the TA. Prof. Zeitlin is pretentious and irrating.
Liked his lecture style, loved the novels he chose for this course. He is funny and interesting. Only problem was he did this class with our TA Alyssa and she was the opposite cold and annoying with nothing thought provoking to say. Without her this class would've rocked, take it, but drop out the first day if she is teaching with him.
Best prof I've ever had! So interesting and well read, class was never boring.
Went in with zero interest in the course. Thx to Z, BEST CLASS of my undergrad (major in eng). He's funny, sweet, smart, personable (though shy). I made the dreaded trip to UBC solely to attend his class. Insight is a must to do well, but he pulls that out of you. Very encouraging. Guys love him, girls..we all secretly think he's mad sexy. TAKE IT!
His lectures were quite interesting but slow-paced. Fairly tough marker but the novels we read were great, and I still got a pretty good mark. He's also reeeallly hot!
I liked this prof a lot in lecture. He is a bit of a hard marker but very willing to help everyone and he wants you to do well.
Professor Zeitlin may be my favorite professor of all time. He is so thoughtful and so passionate about English, his insight into the texts make you want to go to class. He respects all opinions and cares deeply about his students. He's also, a fairly easy marker as long as you think critically and read the books. COMPLETELY recomended
This class renewed my passion for literature!! Great books, intelligent discussions, thoughtful feedback, laid-back grading (-got A's on every assignment and am not a phenomenal essay writer)...and I must admit, he is intensely sexy, but he knows it and it's intimidating...if you want a chill but intriguing English class- this is it!
I had him for Arts One, as a first year student. I'm not an English native speaker and I make many grammatical mistakes. He corrected them one by one. He was always very patient, understanding and gave great feedback that truly improved my writing skills. He's great!!!
Great prof - very friendly, very commited to all his students. My writing improved so much because of all his feedback.
okay this man is insanely attractive and smart to boot. sometimes in class i would just gaze at him. :P pretty intense reading load for a six week class but i had a great time.
The best prof I've ever had the pleasure of being taught by at UBC. Incredibly interesting lectures and material.
INCREDIBLE PROFESSOR! Very nice and understanding, replies to email quickly. Though he has a soft voice, his observations and thoughts put forth are very engaging. I am honestly just searching through courses to have him again.
Offers the most insightful lectures, extremely helpful during office hours. Heavy on close reading, but models it so well. Belongs to the list of "Teachers who will change your life."
Had Zeitlin as my prof for Arts One, so I had him for about 4 hours every week. Brilliant guy! Passionate, loves what he does, which instills a genuine interest in his students. You have to work for your grades, but if youre ready and willing and talk to him for feedback you'll be golden. Participate, read the books, do your best, you'll enjoy him!
Fantastic. Super understanding about missing class and very passionate about the subject. Good lecturer, and lets students have a lot of free range in discussions. Fair marker but gives excellent feedback on writing and really encourages students to be creative.
Professor Zeitlin's class was not the most enthralling class I've ever taken, but he himself is a very kind and caring prof. who is more than willing to work with you to ensure you do well. Getting an A in his class is not easy, but you likely won't get lower than a C--he really wants you to succeed! Definitely recommend this professor.
Although Zeitlin initially seems like a quality professor, feedback is scarce and assignment marking is very tough. If you care about your gpa then STAY AWAY! Engl 120 has similar class averages to 112/110 yet everyone enrolled wants to major in honours English. Unless you are a Nobel Laureate who is prepared for a C at best then avoid this course
A patient and knowledgeable prof who values his students' ideas and growth. Great lecturer. Wants everyone to contribute in seminar discussions. When you participate, you'll appreciate the insight he has to share. You do have to work hard for your mark. He'll be happy to talk with you outside of class for feedback or to discuss about ideas.
Very caring professor who gives detailed feedback. Values participation and helps start meaningful discussions, and gives a lot of insight into the books we study. He really wants his students to succeed so he will do his best to help you improve. Would definitely recommend.
i love this prof and I wish everyone was like him. He's incredibly understanding as long as you communicate with him. If you do the work and show that you actually care about getting the work done, then he is willing to work with you and give you advice. Really a caring professor which I have found hard to come by
Michael is a living embodiment of the stereotypical English prof. He can find meaning in almost any page of any text, he adores reading aloud, and he abhors Zoom. Although his seminars can be a bit dry if students are not willing to participate, his essay feedback and text analysis will change the way you read and think. Thoughtful and insightful.
Zeitlin is a super friendly prof and I really enjoyed hearing what he had to say about the novels covered. He provides fair feedback and is always enthusiastic/happy to have students jump into the discussion. He's genuinely passionate about his class and he is a really sweet guy so I highly suggest you take him!
Dr. Zeitlin is an absolute gem. He's super passionate about his subject and absolutely loves it when his students share their thoughts on the readings. He's a fair grader and is always willing to help you outside of class. By far, one of the most caring and genuine professors I've had at UBC. Texts are hard, but he makes the class worth it. :)
Dr. Zeitlin is probably the best professor that I've ever had at UBC. Cares about his students SO MUCH and teaches with so much passion. His voice is so calming which made for a pretty chill class. Absolute GOAT.
goated prof. always accessible after class and obviously cares a lot for students that care about his class.
Sometimes I was able to fully be invested in the discussion/lecture but other times... he lost me. If you really like English and close reading/interpreting literature then you would do amazing. He emphasized being able to come up with your own interpretation/opinion and being able to expand on this with evidence from the books.
super kind and super understanding! loves participation and is glad to expand upon any point a student wants to make. so open to new ideas, even if your point is just "i liked this one sentence in this one book because it sounded nice" - every opinion can be valuable! absolutely lovely
Prof. Zeitlin was so so so helpful! I could not have picked a better professor for my first university English class. He made a huge effort to help me improve. He even made himself accessible on weekends over email. I learnt SO much during this course. He was extremely willing to provide support whenever needed. Amazing!
absolutely love this man . good readings and cares so much about students
I'm so happy I trusted these reviews. Amazing prof, cares a lot about students. Really heavy on improving throughout the term instead of having to be the best throughout the semester.
Absolute god. Respects everyone's ideas and thoughts, even if it's just a simple note like "I liked this sentence."
Great ENGL100 prof! He showed us that our ideas were valuable whether they were "right" or "wrong". He has amazing insights on the various works he assigns, but also encourages the class to engage in discussion with him. There were 2 take home papers (5 pages), 1 in class essay, and the final. Take this class if you like to share ideas with others!
The best professor so far! Extremely willing to help, always accessible outside class. His grading is a bit tough, but he is more than happy to provide in-depth explanations for all his comments if asked. He was very encouraging, and pushed me to go into Literature. Very patient, kind, and his lectures strive to engage all students.
i love this prof. he is so nice and kind to all of his students and makes us all feel as though our thoughts all matter. slay king.
Very caring professor! Respect students' ideas in writing. Take his class!
Prof Zeitlin is very passionate and knowledgeable. He cares about his students and is very understanding. However, there was A LOT of readings. There were only two papers and one midterm (an in class essay) in the course so participation matters!
this man should have a podcast where he yaps about american history. he'd make a killing bc his voice is so soothing. soothing enough to put me right to sleep every single lecture without fail. he definitely cares about his students, but sometimes the essay feedback crushes dreams. you're always going to have that damn purple pen saying "explain?"
bro was Lowkey evil.
bro. ENGL 100... more like Micheal 100.
Prof Z is passionate and engaging, but his grading can be tough. Attend class, do the readings, and use tools like unstuck AI to prep - it really helps. Overall, a challenging yet rewarding ENGL100 experience.
Professor Zeitlin knew his material well, and encouraged talk in the classroom a lot. He had students select passage readings, and we would discuss them in class. The workload was okay, there is no final exam, but our “final” was an in class assessment of a reflection regarding poetry. The weightings are good, and I would suggest going to office hr
find-your-soul-100.
Prof Zeitlin is super passionate about what he teaches. Loved hearing him talk about the texts and his interpretations. He is very open to everyone's ideas and opinions and encourages participation. He can be a very tough grader on the essays, though, and his feedback is very vague. You can always access him during office hours.
