stood on stage through the entire class...ta's are horrible too.
He seems like a good guy, and the course material itself is interesting, and he often has interesting class discussions...but the tests are extremely difficult, there are only 2, and they count for 50% of the grade each. And the reading is difficult.
this guy suck. Totally unavailable, and his test are too difficult or the material he covers in class. No to mention he not so nice of a guy.
miserable man!!! for a 100 level class for people who are not majors is ridisulous. Too damn hard.
Horrible class. He doesn't know what he is teaching..Lots of readings and he's not helpful in anyway.
Indeed he is horrible. Had no clue what he wanted out of us and his exams are all essays and harshly graded. Even his appearance on NOW, I could not figure out what he was talking about.
Difficult....yeah, very difficult...

Contrary to prior ratings I think this is a great class to take. The material is very interesting. Zweig brings some interesting arguments. Although there is much writing involved it is easy. As long as you keep up with reading your're fine. And there is a lot of room to BS on the essays.
This shady character does not like it when you contradict him dispite the fact that he says he likes being challenged. His exams are too hard 2/3 of the class tend to fail.
Stay away from Zweig.
He is the harshest grader I have ever come across. I've always done extremely well with writing assignments but in his class, everyone receives low grades on papers, he does not include helpful comments and he does not curve the class.
25+ yrs & still running, he just sucks big time. The class overall is pretty interesting, but he seriously needs to understand that students taking 15+ credits are not capable of reading that much material in one semester. VERY harsh grader and is absolutely not helpful during office hours. Whether it's about the course or the ECO major.
This guy is really strict about everything. Not worth taking.. 101%. Although you can get a DEC/ECO/Upper Writing done. Dont the upperdivision unless you have too! GRADES much harder. Tests are HARD! Has to be what he says or the book, not your opinion. I would not recommend him to anyone. If I can grade him, I'd give him 0's throughout, not 1's.
He is a slob thats only around because hes unionized aka tenure makes it harder to fire him. SBU could do without or in fact benefit from the absence of**** one sided opinionated backward self absorbed person. Hes not a real profesor, does not teach anything. He supports communism, wheres mcarthy when u need him?
Do Not Take His Classes.
Take this guy. Despite what everyone else says, you will learn many new and exciting things from him. If you go to class and read the assignments, you will not have a problem getting an A. You should not leave SB without having taken a class from him. :-)
one of the best classes I've taken at SB, lots of reading but he goes over everything thats on the short essay tests. Easy A if you go to class.
The topics are interesting & you do learn something new, but if you are counting on getting your Upper Div. Writing Req. done w/ this guy...THINK AGAIN! The man is very strict & wants specifics when you write a paper on a topic he's familar with. He does the same for midterms & grades on a GPA scale. Hence, there are NO curves.
Stony Brook should do itself a favor and fire this no good COMMUNIST NOW!
HORRIBLE!!! AVOID at all costs!! the only way u should take him is if you have his exams from the previous year as they are the same. Taking him was the biggest mistake on my GPA. A LOT of reading.. Exams count for too much.. wants detailed specifics or u get a D.
alrite guys....dont this this dude...he owned me so much...u'll get 4 books and u gotta read them all...he acts like u have nothing else to do besides reading his retarted books. he makes u use the books he wrote, and he thought he was da man. if you dont agree him, u'll get a D. hes such a dictator or i should say a DICKater? dont take him ever!!!
His classes are interesting however, interesting won't get you an A. EXTREMELY HARSH GRADER. Too much reading material. Test are sooo vague. Its his view or an F in class.
Greatest teacher at SBU! This man has a passion for his subject and can back it up with knowledge. Anyone saying that he is a harsh grader or anything negative about him or how hard his class is, is most likely of below average intelligence or extremely lazy. There is a lot of reading but both 316 & 317 are great classes, you will enjoy them both.
If you sit in front and take an active role in his class you will do well. But if you sit in the back and stare at the ceiling, you will fail. Hes a hard grader, but is very interesting.
Whatever had been said about Zweig was true. Although I could quickly described him and his couse with a few terms, I choose not to. But I will say this. Please remain open minded and not freely believe in everything he taugh because if you do and take his words to heart, you will end hating something and believing in a quarter truth for years.
I showed up to every class, did every reading, went to office hours, studied for exams and still got D's and C's. I am an avid writer, who has been published in many literary magazines, yet this man told me my paper was not sufficient for the ECO upper level writing req., and gave me a D. Do not take his class!
Great professor. Tests and paper are very hard, but teaching style is very intresting. Very interactive with students. Always willing to offer help. Teaches some great life lessons. Not an easy class by any means, but go to class, study hard, and participate. A good grade should not be hard to achieve if the proper time is put in.
The class was good and interesting i learn a a lot on how the corporate world works.
Don't take this professor! He will help you out when you need and he's a nice guy, but he will give you a D on an essay just for having 1 mistake. I understood the material, yet still got Cs and Ds on the test, which btw are ALL essays! Totally killed my gpa!!
This is best professor I have ever had at Stony Brook. He provides a point of view that you will hear in few other places. If you take the class seriously and do all the work, you will be rewarded with a good grade and information that could change your life.
id bet anything that the dude below me is zweig himself.
I've taken both this man's classes. They are demanding and hard. If you are looking for an easy A, it isn't gonna happen here. But you learn alot, and it's all really interesting. Most def worth your time, if you want to bother. Come to class and do your work. If you do, you WILL do well, anyone that complains about his class didnt try hard enough.
ok, folks, just say I did all of his 3 extra credits last year, I even skipped a day of class to go to the city for his extra credit. guess what, he didn't even give me a half letter grade boost from my "extra effort". He is really self-centered, if you want to finish your Eco major on time, don't take him!!!!!
Great professor that knows what he is talking about. If you read the books and understand what the central idea of that class is you will do fine. His exams are based on the readings and your understanding of the topics discussed in class. No quizzes and only a short 2 page paper. Great class.
He is the toughest professor I've had in the economics department. He grades based on a multitude of components. I pretty much failed all the components except for the essay parts of exams and still ended up with a B. If you actually read all the assigned readings, you'll do much better than I did.
If you are a smart cookie, take his class. It is truly a life changing experience. If you don't like to read, actually attend class, or write, don't bother. But if you are actually in college to learn something profound, definitely take one, if not all of his classes.
Very interesting professor and class. You would never think of the things he teaches on your own...butttt extremely hard grader! only 2 exams, worth 50 % each, fail one, ur done. Even if you go to class, its so harddd to pass!! So its hard, but one of the most interesting classes at SB
Very interesting class, however there is tons of reading. Be ready to spend a solid 2 hours a week reading. Also, while class is NOT manditory, if you don't go, you'll probably fail.
The most interesting economics professor I've had yet. I did well in the class, but it took a lot of work. There is a lot of reading, and if you miss class, you're pretty much screwed. It's not easy, but it's worth it. I learned so much interesting stuff.
Great Professor, really interesting subjects, challenging, the most interesting class ever!
If you never get a C or D or F, I would definitely recommend you take this class. He is a GPA KILLER. Here is the case: the class average was C-, and he still did not want to curve the grade. Only two tests and all essay type. If he does not like your opinion, no credit for that problem. He grades tests based on what he likes, not on what we know.
Worst teacher you can ever have. Doesn't care what you know only what he thinks. Gives you massive amounts of reading to do and then gives you essay tests and grades extremely hard. He doesn't teach you anything, he just let's the class talk about random things because he doesn't feel like being a real teacher and i did well in his class
took 351+316, By Far, worst prof. ever had. He only cares about his thoughts, and wants u to read his mind. and grades the class harshly, gives only 2 exams worth 50% each. I can say a lot people failed his class (he posted the grades using ID#). so STAY AWAY.
a lot of boring+useless reading, u have to go to class or u will fail. my advice, stay way. Take any class but his. worst prof. ever!!!
Bad Grader. doesn't care about any1. He gives extra credit but treats it like an exam. talkin about how its not related to class, even tho he said u get the extra credit if u just went to the event. worst prof. ever.
Great Professor. He really cares about his subject. As a consequence of his convictions he is quite harsh when people mess things up. The books are his, so he always knows when someone is wrong.I learned a lot Taking 317 next semester. It's a difficult class to do well in, but if you listen in class and read the material and understand ur gd
i bet the one below is zweig himself or someone related to him. God please make him disappear.......i only took this class because it was eco upper division and a dec k
the worst teacher ever
Horrible Professor. Wrote 2 of the required books for class. Is one of the reasons why tenure for teachers needs to go, and he flaunts that he can do what he wants due to tenure. Will KILL your GPA. STAY AWAY!!!!
if stonybrook decided to a dump on their economic students this professor is what they had in mind. terrible GPA genocide. do not take this course unless you like torture, reading garbage and failing as a hobby
If you want to actually learn something, this guy is for you. Attendance is not required but if you dont show up: Good Luck... He makes you read alot but he isn't a hard grader, 2 test with optional final.. He is getting worse comments than he deserves.. I am a good student, this class will be hard for slackers
i took his 316 and 358 class and both got a A- so i thought maybe he is not as crazy as many say he is. But the real hell is 317 where he really try to be an **** and give everyone a Cs and B-. Very few people got a B or B+(like 6) and only 1 person in the whole class of 50 ppl got an A-. he doesnt give out A's.
This professor is ridiculous. He repeats the same things over again and DOES NOT tell you what's going to be on the test. How are students supposed to remember everything he told us to read? His grading is harsh and I don't think he's qualified at all to be a professor. A lot of reading and a very poorly organized class. Just stay away from him.
Definitely the worst professor in my experience in Stony Brook. Doesn't teach or simply cannot teach. A lot of reading for a course that I'm not sure has anything to do with Economics, at all. Tests are very hard and he expects us to remember all the readings. Studying is difficult if not impossible. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! YOU WILL DROP GPA.
His class isn't even considered Economics. Grading policy consists of only two essay tests. Gives a lot of reading and makes you buy his books. Most importantly, he cannot teach. He is rude and should not be a Stony Brook professor. During class, he goes around in circles and continues talking about nonsense. Please fire this professor.
This guy is the worst teacher of all time. Doesn't care about his students and just babbles about useless garbage. Hard grader with no sympathy. We need to get this guy fired, he doesn't deserve to teach at a school like stony brook.
He's useless and inconsistent. This man is simply unqualified to be a professor. The same answer to the same question could change from a 'a-' to a 'd' which doesn't make any sense. It's either you write things his way or you get a bad grade. STONY BROOK ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT, PLEASE GET RID OF HIM! He's why Stony Brook ECO Department looks bad.
If you can avoid this class, please do. Hardest class I have ever taken at Stony Brook. I had to put in a lot of work to get an A (long long nights). If your smart and you work hard you can get an A. If your lazy, your gonna flunk. Its a lot of reading. i suggest going to class because it helps. Good luck to anyone whose taking him in the future.
I've taken all his classes, and he's definitely one of the most interesting professors I've ever studied with. This class was great, and really dug into globalization, neoliberalism, and it's effects on the world. My one complaint would be that there was too many books, and it kind of felt like we were just skimming the material.

I got a C in this class even though I do all the readings. There are only two essays tests in this class. If you do bad on any of them, you're pretty much done. He's a terrible professor although the course is sort of interesting. He talks in class with discussions but that's it. No reviews. Nothing. If you can, avoid him. He's garbage.
I actually had this class 25 years ago when I was an undergraduate.I am reading this comment and rolling around on the floor laughing. This dude has not changed one bit, perhaps got worse in his old age, he is one of the worst teachers of all times, and a completely miserabole excuse for a human being. And get this - I was actually interested in commu
Was extremely interested in the topics and participated in class discussions every day. However he's an arrogant man who wants every student to follow and agree to his political and sociological ideals. When I wrote things that strayed from his opinions but were still true he failed my answers. Attended every extra credit and got a D. Horrible Prof
He is not helpful and friendly--please, avoid him. He can ruin your GPA.
One of the hardest classes I've ever taken. Only 2 essay tests and an optional final. Grades on a GPA scale. Must do readings and take great notes. The exams are straight forward and aren't as hard as people are making it sound as long as you do the readings. 75% of my class was C+ and under, but I pulled off a B+. Must work hard for your grade.
Do Your Readings & Youll Do Great! Excellent Professor - we need more like him! Not an easy A - But Worthwhile.
If you're not ready to go to class everyday, take notes, and actively listen though out the lecture then i don't suggest you take this class.
40 percent of the class got D and Lower. Use the promise of extra credit which is nothing 85 percent of the time. Do not take this class
In order to get above a D in this class. Expect to do every single reading and study constantly plus take active notes. Even if you do all that there's still a good chance you will fail. He could care less about your grades since he's tenure.
I graduated from SU in 92 Eco major. Came across one of his books "Teaching to student values in the early 90's" The book explains it all. Pick it up if you are perplexed. He killed my gpa back then. Can't believe he is still around driving students mad. He is one odd bird.
I took his ECO 316 and 317. I consider myself a intelligent student, and I want to die right now. Super confusing, and a hard grader. Tons of work.
Grading is tough. While he is an overall nice guy, he is extremely critical when he grades the two tests. It's a shame that the class is so hard to do well in, because he is an extremely interesting professor and his lectures are engaging. If you're willing to memorize tons of information, take it. If not, don't.
Very hard grader. You can do all the reading, but if he doesn't like what you right he will fail you. Need to get a C or above to credit toward graduation. 2 Test 50/50 or Optional final 33%x3.GPA killer - stay away. Says he helps working class, but hurts working class student by failing many of them - what a hypocrite.
I read all the comments before registering for the class and thought this guy could not be that bad, the students were probably slackers or didn't do the reading. Boy was I wrong. AVOID at all cost. This man is really a tough grader and makes it really hard to pass his exams with anything higher than a C. So glad I PNC the class. Please do not take
Just simply don't take his class. what he did is just let you read the book and answer your questions. Wait, also give you a HORRIBLE GRADE.
I actually really loved this class and am glad I took it. No, it's not an easy A. You will have to work for a good grade - which is completely attainable. If you're intelligent and not lazy you can do well
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS if you want an easy A for DEC or whatever. Tons of readings to do. The exams are not that Hard if you read the books, but it's HARD to get an A. I P/NC this class.
Easy Class. Took both classes in the same semester, got As on both. Everyone here is exaggerating! Do you work, you'll be fine
Exams are fair, but you should study hard. Do yourself a favour and attend his class, it´s really interesting. Books are recommended, but you can pass the exams just by attending the course and by taking lots of notes! (for getting a better grade, you should do the extra credits stuff and the book readings)
Don't take Zweig. Don't think, eh, he can't be that bad, people are exaggerating. He is horrendous. He wants nothing more than his opinions regurgitated to him on the exams and if you so much as stray from his view, you are going to fail. It's a struggle to get just the C for credit, let alone higher grades. Please don't take these classes.
When I signed up for this class, I thought the ratings were exaggerated. I didn't think it could be that bad. I was wrong. He even states he doesn't want to see other opinions in exams. He wants to read about "facts", which are in any one of five or so books, about half of which he authored or contributed to. But discussions are interesting.
I took both of his classes, ECO317 & ECO316 and enjoyed them a lot. Very interesting lectures, but lots of reading.
. After registered him, i checked rate my prof. for reviews and i really got scared. Firstly, he has like about 5 textbooks that he wants yall to buy and about 4 written by him ( I didnt even buy one cos i'm broke) i recorded all his lectures on my iphone and listened to them all. I had A.. DONT MISS ONE CLASS Please!!. Pls do his extra credit
Extremely unqualified to be a professor. He has an incredibly lazy style of teaching--he scribbles some nonsense on the board with no sense of structure or organization. Avoid his class.
4 exams (plus one optional) which are impossible. there are formulas we need to pass exams that he doesnt explain OR write down properly. no curve even though avg was a 63 and this is an intro class. rambles about random stories in class. will say that whats in the textbook is wrong but blames our failing on not reading the textbook enough.
Zweig is truly a horrendous professor. His lectures are unclear and disorganized, and he fails to keep his political ideologies out of the discussion. He does not seem to have mastery of the material, and ultimately he's just a very bad professor.
Professor Zweig is one of the worse professors I have ever had at Stony Brook University. His tests are not easy and some of the questions on his exams are confusing. Also, he does not allow calculators on any of the exams. I wish he would keep his political views out of lectures. Overall, not a good professor. I would not take him again.
He deserve all zeros here. Worst professor even. If you need help don't even bother asking him. He's exam are tough and confusing. The TA teaches better than him.
DO NOT consider taking his class. please. the poor reviews of him are accurate. he is condescending, inarticulate, obstinate. che 131 was easier than this. his exams are MUCH harder than he makes lectures and theres no way to study for them (he himself said the textbook was useless). not even helpful at office hours
If you're looking for an economics class that requires about as much reading as an English class, then by all means take this class. Otherwise, don't take Zweig. AVOID unless you're willing to make an effort--at least either do the readings or go to class. Both is preferable. His lectures are long, boring, and solely based on his opinions.
The hardest class ever taken before. If you are not good at English or international student, I strongly recommend you to drop the course as soon as possible. Honestly saying, his lecture is not bad, but the way how he grades exam is seriously harsh. He doesn't consider the contents much. Never expect partial credits.
He is tough grader. Lectures are boring af. If you are looking easy ECO class in SBU do not take him! You will regret.
If you have another chance just do not take his class. Exams are hard. He is tough grader.
If you like economics: Easy A. Show up to EVERY class and write down all the important parts he talks about. You will not need a textbook if you do this. Any questions, just ask. He'll never tell you you're wrong for any opinion you have. Only problem is theres some ambiguity with test questions, but if you ask the TA, he'll help out a lot.
YOU MUST DO THE READINGS and review them before the exams. Only two exams and an optional final. do the readings and remember important facts and literally regurgitate his facts onto your essays. got a B barely went to class. have to be dedicated to the reading otherwise you will fail. not that hard but have to do work. very nice man
Worst professor I've had so far. No curve and the test averages came out to be 50 to 60 range. Sometimes goes off topic and generally confusing person to understand. Has a short temper too and will not care how well you do. Good if your looking for a challenge because the tests are tricky but not impossible.
This guy knows his stuff. He is really interesting and even though he is a tough grader, I would say his 316 class is one of the best in the department. Here is the secret to doing well in the class, know 50% of the information extreme well and its possible for you to get and A. Lots of reading though. Be prepared to answer questions in class.
Great Professor. He's probably the best lecturer I've had.
