brilliant and funny. always very patient and helpful. has some pretty interesting stories. :)
Tough class, but she is good at explaining the concepts. Make sure you pay attention to the notes and do the readings.
One of the best classes I have ever taken!
I heard that PHIL 001@SFU was really hard, yes, it was tricky, but I am so thankful I had her for a teacher, she did an amazing job of explaining everything, and gave out practice work that was actually helpful for her exams (SO DO THE PRACTICE STUFF!)she has to be the best teacher to teach phil 001.
Michaela is the best prof i've ever had. shes 28 which may explain why her style is so diff. from all the boring stuff every oth prof does. she really knows her stuff makes phil seem easy. the examples she gives are priceless. get ready for an interesting class. im a girl but she's totally hot.
This class as a subject was boring to me, but she was totally awsome. Made discussions interesting.
hot and she makes it easy to understand
Pushes you, but she's fair and explains concepts very well.
Nice, helpful, and explains complicated materials in a simplistic manner
Cute. Marks very fair. Explains class well. Easy to follow.
Michaela makes sure the class was fun and interesting. She is a young teacher that understands how to make a class fun. The workload is balanced.
Excellant prof. Very nice, clear, helpfull, and caring. A tough marker but if you try hard you will do well.
Make sure u come to class, her tests are straight out of her notes. The class is a bit boring, but she explains everything real well, and tries to make it as interesting as philosophy can be. She is a tough marker, but if u ask her for help she'll be more than happy to help u. & ask her to look at ur outline before writing the paper-it really helps
Phil of morality class. She is very clear, very interesting topics in the class. Good class, better teacher. Make sure you really prepare for her tests cuz she's a hard marker and you can't argue with her, don't even try.
Super nice helpful prof. good class discussions. good teacher. A is possable if you work hard.
She is a very nice person. She also teaches very well as all her notes are very clear and her examples are great! I highly recomed this teacher for PHIL 3033
Michaela is an amazing teacher and person! She is: very clear in her requirements, extremely willing to help, cares about her students' success, gives great examples, encourages students to think critically... what more could you want in a teacher? Plus she is a pretty cool individual. Highly Recommended!
Michaela is a very nice prof. She is very delicated and tries hard to explan the concept by simplifying it. There is a midterm, final and 2 papers in that class. It definitely didn't help that she is a hard marker. Study very hard for her tests and don't argue with her cuz you cannot win.
FIND HER REALLY HARD TEACHER.SHE CAN NOT UNDERSTAND YOUR SITUATION.NOT ABLE TO ANSWER YOU QUESTION.SHE IS NOT THERE FOR OFFICE HOURS
Helpful and nice. Class is not too easy but teacher helps in office hours.
She is funny, interesting material. However, beware of group midterms, choose to do yourself (it's worth 25% x 2) = 50%. I got 53% as a group and did the second mt my and got 90%. Also, she wants you to write in your own words and deduct marks if write word for word from her overheads. Great prof. Highly recommend. Passionate about philosophy.
Tests can be challenging, so study for those. Interesting class discussions, but she argues with her students rather than respecting their opinions. Very opinionated. Papers can be challenging to write if you disagree, because she only allows you to use quotes and info from the course readings which she agrees with.
Great class! Lots of discussion. Don't really understand what those people are saying prob got a bad mark or caught cheating or something. Totally recommend!
Fantastic Prof. She will respect your assertions in both exams/essays but challenges you within the 'philosophy framework'. Her marking is consistent, stick with the material and you'll OK but don't add unnecessary BS or she will give demerit points. Be weary of team exams, many didn't do well, but I had a strong partner that carried me.
Michaela Lucas is one of the best teachers I have ever had by far. Her notes are clear, she responds to emails, and goes out of her way to help her students succeed. What more could you want from a teacher? I bet the bad reviews are from people who do not attend class or do the readings. What do you expect? You have to do the work to succeed.
Micheala's one of the worst teachers at Kwantlen. She's very self-righteous in discussions and lectures and thinks anyone who disagrees is wrong. If you write your paper disagreeing with her you get a bad grade. Also tells alot of stories that don't have to do with the class.
Michaela is an awesome teacher! Even if you don't agree with her, she will respect your assertions as long as you can support them. Ethics isn't easy; however, she simplifies it and makes it easy to understand. So much so that a monkey could do it. Slackers beware! You have to work for your grade. An A is possible if you do.
Professor is very helpful, and goes over any questions. Nice pace to the class. Turns to class for discussion which is fun. Helpful examples, diagrams and drawings. Essays are not a walk in the park. Effort is required. Team option to take midterm and final is helpful, but she has rules to avoid social loafing. Good effort= B+ or A-
Awesome prof! I would recommend taking her again because she's such a nice lady. She helps you when you ask for it and she's very friendly. The class isn't easy and it isn't hard. Just study and you could get an A. Remember if you're struggling with philosophy, go ask her because she is there to help!
She is really an amazing teacher. She goes off topic quite a bit but when she does you learn something from her every time. She just has such a different view on life that makes me think that if there were more people like her, the world would be a much better place. Oh, its an easy class! Attendance is required to do well on exams!
good class and easy to work on. recommend
Excellent instructor and overall great experience taking her class. Her notes are very helpful for the exams, and they help you keep up with and understand the material. More people like her in existence would make the world a better place. Highly recommend her for ethics.
I have a class with her at SFU and she is really terrific. Her notes are very clear, her lectures are interesting and it seems like she's got background knowledge on literally anything you want to talk about. Highly recommended.
I loved taking this course. This prof is friendly & clear. Tests are taken in groups. Individual essays are harder. Be warned- if you have a different viewpoint/opinion she will challenge you. If you have a good reason you will earn her respect. I would like to take another Phil course with her again, she's a sweet lady :)
very nice prof. exams are easy (based on class notes so nothing tricky) but challenging in the sense that you have to write them in groups.
Very refreshing to have a teacher with a pulse such as Michaela. She is a new-age prof, and I appreciated her views and discussion, but it may not be for everyone (can be 'harsh').
I strongly recommend not to take her ever ever. if you will take her you will end up suffering. no comments at ALL about describing her
Michaela is quite possibly the coolest person I have ever met, let alone have as an instructor. I really respect her way of thinking. She is not a teacher you want to have if you aren't comfortable with having personal beliefs challenged by a person with "out there" opinions. She's an extremely strong woman! Some people may feel threatened by that.
Good looking, and a very good prof. Knows her stuff well, very clear, and very helpful.
critical thinker and a cool person. actually learned things... go figure. highly recommend this prof
Her class is fair as long as you don't have the TA for your tutorial hours. Lucas is a fair marker, but the TA expects us to be on a 4th year Philosophy level. Lucas is a great prof. Please don't make the same mistake as me by choosing the TA for tutorials. YOU WILL REGRET IT!
Michaela is the best prof I have ever had. I took a 1st year class with her at SFU, and she has a very clear way of explaining concepts, and really knows her stuff. She is very open for discussion in lecture, and I highly recommend taking her class, if you can keep an open mind and have your beliefs challenged. Amazing, beautiful, strong professor!
Course is generally easy and consists of 1 presentation, 2 case reports, 1 midterm and a final. Michaela is very open-minded and tends to go off topic at times but makes some classes interesting.
The most interesting class ever, with one of the most interesting profs! She is very passionate about the material, which made it much easier to grasp as she used examples in the real world. You must have an open mind before taking this class. Group midterm and final were a breeze, and there were also two essays. Loved this class!
Michaela is the most interesting person I have ever met. Not only is she extremely attractive, she's super smart. She has great stories and it's awesome how much life experience she has. Lectures are pretty good, but you will have to pay attention and do the readings in order to succeed. Would totally take her again
Michaela is an amazing teacher who is super enthusiastic about the course. Classes aren't just her talking, its everyone in the class discussing the theories and their personal views and experiences. It is a very interesting class. The readings will get you a little confused because it is all pretty dense, but she goes over it all well in class
horrible please dont take her , she says shes open to all discussions but she is so against other religions and believes her views are right and others are wrong. DO NOT RECOMMEND HER! have a beautiful day!! 3
Michaela is an amazing professor. Every lecture, she provides helpful class notes, relevant anecdotes, and thought provoking questions that both challenge my conventional thinkingbelieves and further my understanding of business ethics and social responsibility. If you attend every class and study class notes, you would do well.
Michaela is a fairly average professor. Her notes are helpful, but she can be a bit boring during lectures. Assignments help you to learn the material, but the text is fairly useless outside of being a reference for your papers. One issue is that she tends to use her lectures as a soapbox for political issues such as veganism, feminism, etc.
Michaela requires you to do group exams, unless you've missed more than one class then you have to do it alone which is supposed to be a "punishment" but is a significant improvement over the obnoxious group exams. She bases your entire 5% participation marks on a self evaluation, which if you forget about because there's no class website you get 0
Class and concepts were interesting and she explained them fairly well Assigned papers definitely added an xtra sense of understanding for the concepts. HOWEVER, she seemed to really dislike the idea of religion and questions religious concepts and people throughout the semester which definitely made a lot of ppl uncomfortble. Very Anti-Religion.
Michaela is a great prof! I enjoyed her class and her view on things! She is great at explaining things, although many of the philosophers that are covered are hard to understand! So going to class is important as Michaela breaks down what they are saying into something easier to understand! Make sure you are ready to put in the work for your grade
Michaela is a great prof and I would highly recommend her. She is great at simplifying hard concepts and she has a lot of experience and knowledge to offer.
She doesn't have a website so you have to get notes in class. You have a group of 3 for exams, and if you miss more than 3 hours of class you have to write it alone. The groups are chosen based on your answer to a question, and she puts you in a group of people that got the same mark as you; "you're at the same level". The 2 essays are a bit hard.
very rude prof. Not helpful at all and you can't skip more than a class before both midterm and final or you will do exams alone. doesn't explain notes well very hard on you.
She is very nice and helpful if you need anything. The lectures are dry and are heavily politically motivated. Two exams and two papers. The exams are the only times you will really focus on Business Ethics practically.
Michaela is cool but I find this course unnecessary as it should be a BUSI class, not PHIL. She often goes off on entertaining tangents. Exams are ok if you have a good group that studies. Don't expect to get an A because she doesn't like giving them out. Awesome that there is no final exam for the class. Just 2 papers and 2 exams.
She's nice and will try her best to help if you ask for it, but her powerpoints are very word heavy. You will be writing a lot and you'll have to write because she doesn't use moodle or upload her powerpoints. I wish she would have more concise notes, but they're like paragraphs. She explains while we write and I personally don't like that.
This professor is ridiculous how the hell does she expect her students to pay attention and learn when there to busy writing what's up on the slide cus she's is to idiot to put anything on moodle. She is the first prof that does not have moodle. Her class is ridiculous boring
Michaela is clear with her expectations. Usually Arts courses' readings are very lengthy, but each reading a week (3) are only 2-4 pages ONLY. Easy participation marks if you can show her your reflections/critical thinking. Only negative is that your midterm/final is based on your groups ability to perform.
She is quite a character. Although this class is an easy A, be prepared to be BORED and don't skip class, you only have 2 opportunities to miss entire semester. "If she's there, so are you kinda deal". 2X 1000 word papers and 2X group midterm of 3 people. She gives you what to study for exams. Overall easy but dry class.
I'm very satisfied with having taken this course with Dr. Lucas. She's very engaging and super responsive when you need to contact her with questions. Dr. Lucas is the best all-around, but if one thing I could ask her to consider changing, it'd be NOT providing the reading materials in weirdly shaped and 45-degree angle scanned book pages. :)
Little to no student interaction. Doesn't explain why we lost marks on assignments/exams. Other than that, she's OK.
Treats students poorly and is lazy. Takes months to get assignments back. Boring class boring teacher. such a shame.
Really tough grader. I don't know what you'd have to do to get an A. Boring teacher.
Kinda a tough grader. Got an A- but I put hours into the course and expected better. Oh well. Not many things you're graded with, also a lot of group activities.
Very tough grader, lots of reading and boring presentations. However, you just need to study hard for this course. Tests are 3 hours long, I hoped it would've been long since we're doing online class. Little to no student-teacher interaction.
She should be 1/5 not 4/5. Practically learn nothing from her. She gives you assignments every week and no other interactions at all. You contribute so much and she gives you a bare minimal passing grade. She's lazy af that she wants you to keep track of your own contributions and submit to her at the end of the term. DO NOT TAKE HER, SHE THE WORST
Avoid Michaela's class if you can. If you disagree with her politics, your grade will show it. She is THE laziest prof I've ever had. Group projects are her thing, so get ready for those. If you are forced to take her class, just nod along with whatever she says or she'll give you a lousy grade. She values her vanity above all else.
What I learned about Michaels's teaching style is if you answer exactly what she is asking in a thoughtful manner, you'll get a good grade. If you start rambling on about other material to show how much you know, she's going to give you a bad grade. Stick to the basics, answer her questions fully and you'll do fine. I am NOT a business student.
Instructions not clear. Conflicting instruction. Instruction changes. Confusing.
Overall, the information provided in this course is unclear, so are the instructions.
Literally the first week of class and her instructions for the class discussions are super confusing and mine ended up being deleted everytime I upload something on it. I would avoid her if you can
When taking Michaela's class it isnt about if you can do the homework by applying your skills, its about doing how she likes it. Shes weirdly specific about everything and its the most headache thing I've gone through all semester and I'm not even a philosophy student.
Nothing
I will not get into detail because my situation was very specific, but let's just say that I love philosophy and if I were to take another class, I would try another professor in a heartbeat.
This course was not thoughtfully designed. She is very particular about how students complete assignments, and it is to the point where assignment instructions overcomplicate easy concepts. Students are graded on their ability to please the professor rather than on demonstrating their understanding of the course material.
Though grader
Very bad prof, grades very tough, and does not know how to correlate course material well with the students. I would not take this prof, STAY AWAY. Grades like her life depends on it.
Too much course material and very little engagement. Very strict in how she wants things done with her instructions
Please do not take her! It is an online class but it seems like a final exam in every assignment. She marks so harshly. Gave me a 40%/100% just because i misspelled something in one of the citations. Does not teach at all and you have to watch the lectures. Its like shes trying her best to make u fail.
Online async. Basically doesn't teach, has students ask and answer each other's questions about readings along with randomly assigned group work. That's it. Communications are weirdly defensive and condescending. Super picky about random stuff. There are better profs for this course.
I had her async courses for Phil 3033. She was not too hard and generally easy. Her moodle course itself was little disorganized and odd. She locks the weekly group discussions, and she expects you to keep track of what you wrote. Overall, Ms.Lucas is a nice professor, and she did give me an extension for the written assignment. Her exams were ok.
I'm telling you right now take a different prof and drop this one ASAP. No transparency and loves to find any excuse to fail you.
I have found this course very challenging due to the professor's disorganized teaching and unclear communication. weekly readings are difficult to follow, and I have sometimes felt unfairly blamed for issues instead of being supported. This has caused me stress and made it harder to engage with the subject, despite my interest in philosophy.
Online sync + irl 3h exam. If online, it should be lecture-heavy. No class calls this sem + no textbook; just 40m~>1.5h video lectures, some readings, a few reading response assignments. If u have >3 courses, u do better taking notes for ~1h lecture vids. Irl exams, she asks for oral response too. Study material; Take many notes, do readings.
She does not give you comments even when you fail her assignments and give you a reason why she failed you. Had to drop her class because even with me getting 100% on the final exam I wouldn't pass
Professor Lucas where do I even begin be ready to deal with a headache the entire time you have her I mean seriously this class is way harder than it needs to be the instructions on every assignment have to be the exact or else you will do poorly. You basically got to please her to do well this professor for me is a perma avoid!!!!
Must follow assignment rules exactly. Idk if I can pass cuz I misread exam 1 rules by skimming rules as readings +notes cited if needed. No textbook, just READINGS, writing responses, 40m~1.5h lecture vids ~4-7k words notes=40k words exam 1, exam 2 40k. DO READINGS. I cited notes > readings, got 0% exam 1, 3d study, re-appeal mark @ exam 2. idk.
