Very helpful, kind & knowledgeable about the subject. Emails a list of terms before each test which really help you study. If you put in the effort to review the slides shown in class & also the terms, you should do fine. Will be taking her next semester for Art History II.
Fast moviing class. A lot of notes any many many slides. This is a hard class and should not be taken lightly. When I took this class it only meet once a week... just to much information for once a week at night. good luck with this class!!!
WOW! Awesome professor, the classes move quickly and there is a lot of information to take in but if you pay attention and review the slides and your notes you should do well! Very knowledgable and helpful, answers any questions you have and keeps in contact with you to make sure you have what you need to do well, long as you apply yourself.
Before I registered for the class I told her I was going on a 3 week trip to Europe and wanted to know if that would be a problem. She thought it was great. When I came back, she had already given the final exam so I had to write an essay, and apparently I didn't understand what she wanted so I did not do well even though I studied while away.
Wouldn't recommend it, unless you are an art major. Required field trips - one is 50 miles from campus. Sometimes runs class long and must sign out after class in order to be counted present. Tests are not easy, and cover a lot of material. This class is listed as Understanding Art. No, this is Art History. Lots of history. Think humanities.
Some students get to sleep in class, while others get "in trouble" for going to the restroom. Very little empathy or concern for others' situations in some cases, particularly concerning the travel-required portion of class. Watch out.
Renaissance to present time. No prereq. Excellent teacher, clear lectures, and great slides throughout semester. One interesting field trip. Take thorough notes and read the book and you will pass. Three 52-question exams; two points each question. Wished for six exams to more evenly spread out the large quantity of material. I highly recommend her
No help what so ever. Instructions very unclear. Unprepared with class projects
Expects a lot out of her students and is very strict about her attendance policy. Three essays are required throughout the semester, one at the beginning and two at the end. First one is easy, last two are supposed to be an analysis of a work of art. She is nice but if you're looking for a throw away class then this isn't it. Book is a must!
Awesome class and awesome teacher. I learned a lot in her class which is helping me with the Humanities class I am currently taking. She doesn't put up with student's B.S. and if you miss a class, you will miss a lot. I would like to take Art History 2 with but her class is only offered late at night.
Excellent teacher. Clearly explains requirements and helps you achieve. Very knowledgeable and interesting. You can pass by following directions but she inspires you to excel. What you learn in this class will help you in many others.
I took this class online-hardest class I've ever taken. Expects SO MUCH out of you to the point of chaos (weekly quizzes- usually 4 ch. each week PLUS other assignments) I made an A in Anatomy&Physiology, Chem, Gov, History, Comp, Humanities, etc... but I'm struggling for a B in this class. If you are REALLY into art and excess work, go for it!
She knows her stuff, but honestly, her lectures are verbatim to the book. READ YOUR BOOK. she tells you basically what you need to study for the test, and if you are nice to her, and email her, she WILL HELP YOU and give you advice. DO NOT miss class, it will hurt you the most. Very comprehensive, alot of material. I like her though. Shes good.
1st off she is SO annoying. she nearly confuses you with over explaining EVERYTHING. there is a lot of work & she expects you to do it exactly by the book. id say if you can, do not chose her. she also expects you to go on field trips, that are mandatory, who has this kind of time? she thinks her class is the only class you have. DO NOT TAKE HER!
She is very enthusiastic about her subject matter and knows her stuff. If you study, then you can do well in this class!
She's a really great teacher. She's fun, engaging, kind, and really clear when she speaks. She hits all the main ideas and tells you exactly what you need to study for tests. Homework level extremely low. DO NOT get the text book; you won't need it if you take good notes. This teacher is great, and I highly, highly recommend her for any class.
I took Understanding Art Online in the Summer with her. You need to read your whole textbook, and you have very detailed questions on tests. If you have a problem with posting pictures of yourself online the class isn't for you. Assignments are fun. Maybe a lot of work for some. But Overall easy A for me.
Professor is fun, engaging, very bubbly personality (which helps in night class). Class is Dual Slide based (lights off all class long) Pay attention to art periods/movements mostly. She posts grades quick! 3 tests (28% grade each) 2 article reviews, intro paper and TONS of extra credit opportunities. Will never look at art the same, thanks to her!
Don't take this class if you ever need to use the bathroom!!! Treats you like you are in Kindergarten-one 10 minute break in 3 hours and no one can leave any other time or she very rudely embarrasses you. Felt claustropobic the whole semester...
Professor Oberlaender is amazing! Those that complain about her are just LAZY. She's enthusiastic about what she teaches, 2 art articles to write on(of YOUR choice!), 1 SHORT intro paper, 3 tests that make up the most of your grade. Trips to museums as extra credit. Like all college classes you get what you put into it. NEED book!HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
This woman's demeanor is disrespectfully condescending to every person with whom she speaks. I had a tree fall on my truck, and as polite as I could I requested permission to miss class that evening because I could not drive. Her response was call for a taxi, without regard for the fact that I am a low income student who can't afford a taxi.
She has no empathy if you have problems outside of class. She changed a test date half way through the semester, and cared not that one of her students had paid almost $1500 for a trip to the Appalachian trail the week she changed it to. If you want a teacher who cares about her students, this woman is not for you. AVOID HER IF POSSIBLE.
Took online.5 Discussions/5 Tests. Some discussions require trips to museums/roaming your city for architecture in order to complete. Tests are extremely difficult-50 questions only an hour to take it. You can use your book/notes but good luck finding all the answers in the short amount of time. Wouldn't recommend unless you're a die hard artist.
Professor has a love for art & teaching. Wants to see students do well & enjoy art. Trips to museums, finding architecture in your neighbors. Gives extra credit opportunities. Tries to make online course interactive. Helpful & responsive to emails. There are 5 Tests & 5 Discussions. Must buy book & USE IT! Take notes & listen to videos to succeed.
Professor Oberlaender is a genuine and dedicated teacher. She is passionate about the material and her knowledge in this field is clearly outstanding. The course is set up very clearly, and taking the time to study the material will help to pass the tests. Even if art history doesn't interest, you'll leave this course with a entirely new outlook.
Professor Oberlaender is a great teacher and made art history very interesting and even though it was ancient to Gothic , she made it relevant to today. She is also very accommodating , and even stayed late one class so i could take a test early so i could go on a trip the next week. Disregard any comments that say differently
This professor is AMAZING! She was helpful in everything I needed! I took this class online and I would recommend her to everyone. She is passionate about art and knows what she is talking about. You also have a scavenger hunt that is actually fun! Oh ya, she gives extra credit opportunities :)
Professor Oberlaender 100% tells you what to expect and what to do to be successful. Do not take this as a blow off class. If you are a art history major you HAVE to use this instructor. This class requires reading every word using all the of the extra links , credit etc that is offered. The tests are BRUTAL!
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!! Not interactive at all. Class is long and there is little time for questions because she continues to TALK! Not an easy class - I got a better grade when I didn't study (if you can believe that!). Do yourself a favor and find someone else!!!
Overall, this class was very interesting to me. I took it online and could appreciate the opportunity to work ahead. The textbook usage is mandatory, as all the exams are developed directly from it. Not sure why everyone is overwhelmed with the exams: they only included the material covered in the chapters. The exams were the most fun part for me!
The ONLY teacher to take for Art History. Heavy use of textbook. Many of her own amazing photos and stories. Incredibly thorough. Multiple opportunities for extra credit. Two papers due early in the semester - easy. Not a hard class if you read the book and turn up for the lectures. Wonderful teacher. Wish more teachers were like her.
Professor Oberlaender is a gem at SPC. Her class is not a class to be taken lightly, and why would you when you are PAYING for your education. I suggest you read the book, watch the online video's that she provides, and make great use of her vast knowledge. This is not a blow off course, nor should it be. I look at the world much differently now!
Full of content; interesting material; great professor. You'll have to work for your grade, but she's helpful and ready to go the extra mile for you. Truly enjoyed online class and am seeing the world with new sight after the semester.
Professor Oberlaender is great. This is no fluff course. She demands you put on your big boy pants and get to work. However, she supplies you with all the materials and tools for you to succeed in this course. I had to drop because I just bit off more than I can chew. 9credits in the summer while working full time was just overwhelming me.
Wonderful and very informative teacher. She is very knowledgeable and has communicated and helped me a great deal in this class. If you have questions or concerns, just ask her. Also, plan to read and study Art. Make and put in the time. You will BENEFIT!
Great professor, hard class so be prepared to read a lot of the book. it is no easy class, but this professor is one to take. This will be my 3rd times taking her she is wonderful.
I took this Professor's on-line course. Dr. Oberlaender encourag ed the class to meet in person at The Leepa-Rahtner Museum @ S PC's Tarpon Springs campus. She is really cool.No nonsense and as long as you read the material and stay on task you'll do well. Also the discussion forums are unique and fun to do. Enjoy the journey. Don't be camera shy.
If you like art I think you will like this class. I totally enjoyed her lecture class. Ms. Oberlaender is extremley knowledgeable and knows her stuff. You do need to attend class, read the material and take notes. If you don't do any of the above you are not going to make it in the class. There are plenty of extra credit opportunities also.
Professor Oberlaender is a wonderful teacher. She answers emails promptly and gives you a great chance at getting an A as long as you keep up with the weekly quizzes. I took this course online so everything was open book and very easy. For some quizzes, it's best to at least skim the chapter before beginning the quiz.
Professor Oberlaender is awesome! I took her class online and even then her enthusiasm showed through. She gives chances to get extra credit (such as a class field trip). She also has you go on a scavenger hunt as one of your assignments. I learned so much in this class! Excellent professor!
She is one of the best teachers Ive had, her class was easy to follow. All you have to do is make sure you read and follow directions.
It is essential to take good notes in order to pass the exams; I wish I would had got myself a mini-recorder to tape lectures. Very informative class, Oberlaender knows her stuff. Grades fair and extra credit opportunities.
PROFESSOR WAS CLEAR ON THE INSTRUCTIONS - HELPFUL WHEN I EMAILED HER WITH QUESTIONS - QUICK TO GET BACK TO ME. SHE IS CLEARLY A TOP NOTCH PROFESSOR!
This class is not hard but not easy. YOU MUST ATTEND AND STUDY or you will fail the class. She tells you everything you need to know before the test.It is a long lecture so try to take notes.USE NOTE CARDS with the different time periods, artists & paintings on it.She's helpful & DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!Ask questions and feel free to email her 24/7.
Professor Oberlaender is a wonderful teacher. She is supportive, encouraging and and very understanding. I highly recommend her!
The worst teacher. She lectured and that was about it.There was no discussing the art at all.The test were not easy and I studied and you really only get one chance to answer the questions on the test because they are slides. There needed to be way more interaction and discussion.Over half the class dropped out by the 3rd week that should say it all.
Professor Oberlaender is very passionate about this course. Also, she is super understanding and will work with you where she can. If you turn your work in on time and study a bit you will get a good grade. Quickly responds to emails.
She is very nice and very easy to get along with. At first I had a D in the class and she had extra credit available that helped me pass with a B. She has videos tests to help you. Take notes from the video and use your book on the test, I guarantee you won't receive a bad grade on them. I didn't personally read the chapters, just skimmed through.
Professor Oberlaender is a great online Professor. Her expectations are clear, and she provides many different tools to suit your learning style. There is extra credit available, and she will work with a willing student if needed. She also responds promptly to e-mails, and stays on top of grading.
The class was strictly lecture. No time to discuss at all. When you were allowed to speak she talked down to you. Professor has too high of a opinion of herself. She seems to be an academic artist. Doesn't fit with my medium of assemblage. You must study hard for this class and be able to learn with lecture only class.
Great class. True college experience. Professor is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about Art History. She lays out a plan and follows it. All you have to do is the work. My third semester in college and this was my first professor that made sure we got our grades quickly if not immediately.
Excellent Instructor. The course was well structured and you will leave knowing what you should know at this level about Art History- if you pay attention and study hard. There were on-site requirements, arrangements could be made.
Prof. Oberlaender is wonderful! She is so incredibly nice and has a really fun layout for the class. She has you go on a scavenger hunt that makes learning about architecture so much easier and it's really fun. The tests are super easy as long as you use the materials she gives you to study. She is easy to talk to and emails back quickly. LOVED HER
Professor Oberlaender was one of the best I've had at St. Petersburg College. You can tell she is a passionate educator. If you read the material, watchattend the lectures, and study you will succeed. She was more than willing to help give advice and was always available to discuss any concerns I had. Great teacher.
Sweat teacher but videos aren't useful, there is no study guide for this class. A lot of information & no break down on what you need to know for exams Quizzes are 65minutes long & there are 50 questions on 3 chapters that have multiple artist ,multiple symbolizations for paintings, sculptures and architectural designs. Ruins experience with art
Online course so of course be ready to do all the reading.... However, there is no breakdown of what to expect on tests. Three chapters, 50 questions, and 60 minutes on them. A little out of reach. She does not understand the concept that this is a required course, not one that I would have chosen for myself. I'm trying to get an IT degree, not art
Tough class online. Make sure you use the study guides, read the book and watch the videos for each of the 5 tests. This is not an easy class online. Professor Oberlaender is wonderful if you need help. Let me sit in on the live classes to help me. Quick to respond to emails. If I had to redo I would take the lecture. Learnt a ton!
There are only 3 tests in the whole class. Unfortunately with the amount of material given, this means studying a lot to pass. Some of the questions are about artists covered in class, but not necessarily on pieces shown in class. Just be prepared to spend extra time on this class. *Side note* she got 'yeah' on hotness because for her age she is.
Make sure to do well in the quizzes
I was initially was very worried because I heard from other students that her class was very difficult but after taking it maybe those students just didn't do reading/ watch the video lectures... Not hard to get an A or B if you just do all the work. It was a fun class to take over the summer. Really had fun with the architecture scavenger hunt!
Prof O is the BEST instructor I've had!She is a Harvard-quality instructor; this is not an easy class, but it's a great one!I have never had an instructor that interacted with an online class like Prof O-She offers so much of herself; her organization and all the extra material she provides are great. You will not regret taking any of her classes!
Oberlaender is hot, but she needs to have a textbook with quizzes on what we read.
Professor Oberlaender is a great instructor. Be sure to get your textbook asap! The reading intensity was not so bad, so read in portions prior. Always participate in discussions and other assignments because they all matter! Utilize resources given such as: study guides, videos etc. Overall, she is there to help and is a good professor to have!
She's very helpful and understanding. Provides extra credit.
Professor Oberlaender is fabulous! I definitely recommend taking her class! :)
I took Professor Oberlaender for Art History - Renaissance to Contemporary online. There are 5 exams that count for a large part of your grade, but of course, they are open book and she gives lots of videos and resources to understand the material. There's only a couple of discussions that are super easy and only one paper. She's super nice.
Make sure you study for the test, but Professor Oberlaeder gives lots of study guides if you watch her videos. She is an excellent teacher and will give extra credit for hard work.
Ms. Oberlander made the class extremely tedious with her unclear instructions, specifically her scavenger hunt and discussion posts, ended up having to redo the scavenger hunt because of such misinformation. Was extremely backhanded in her compliments. She writes her own tests which often are opinion questions. Overall just a bad teacher.
Professor Oberlaender has many great qualities as a teacher. She explains things thoroughly so there is no confusion left. And she is very understanding of her students circumstances. I recommend attending all her field trips also.
Professor Oberlaender is an awesome ARH prof! Her lectures are extremely detailed and easy to understand. I would definitely take her class again!
Wonderful Professor inside and out! Professor Oberlaender provides every bit of information needed to pass her online tests. Although the tests are open book, be ready to take lecture notes and read, participation matters. I enjoyed every second of the course and would take her class again in a heartbeat!
This professor wants you to succeed. If you put in the work, an A is in your reach. She works with students individually to make sure you can do well in this course. Go on the museum trips! They are great, and she is much better to listen to than any of the other guides in the museum! :)
she is a really good professors and her class so easy and she gonna help you if you need anything.
I took this class online. The class was great. You really do learn a lot about art history. She gives you a lot of extra credit opportunities. My only problem is her quizzes, there are five, fifty questions are timed and she doesn't give you a lot of time. Other than that, it was a good class.
This professor is very engaged with her students in discussion posts, provides very helpful study guides for the exams, and is a superb art history teacher. The museum field trip I took with her was also valuable; I got to see various art styles in person rather than just read about them in the textbook. I am thankful I chose her for this class!
Class consists of 5 exams, some discussions and 2 writing assignments. She opens everything up weeks before it is due, so you are able to get ahead. Don't bother buying or renting the textbook. A quick internet search will send you to reddit and there there is the full textbook you can download.
She's really one of my favorite teachers! If you love art or interested in it, I recommend taking her class; she knows her stuff. You do have to study for her 5 exams and do her study guides if you want to pass. She also has 2 writing papers. I would do as much extra credit as possible. She's not the easiest but she's a great teacher none the less!
Mrs. Oberlander forget that her class is a required class. Not all of us are art majors. I went into the class enjoying looking at art, but because of the course set up and the way she talks to students I now have a different view of artist and art. She is often times rude but nice in her message. STAY AWAY IF YOU ARE JUST A CASUAL ART INTEREST.
Awesome teacher! The classwork was heavy but not anything you cant handle. If you listen to her video lectures and take notes on the study guide while listening youll pass this class with flying colors. Shes specific on what she wants but shes also understanding and a very sweet and caring human being. She responds almost immediately to emails.
I've always enjoyed art but she made me really re-think during her class. She was very rude when I reached out about my grade and asssignments. She graded really weird and the set up of her course was not helpful at all. I did not like her style of teacher. I would not take her again. Her test were also all of the place and impossible to pass.
Professor Oberlaender gives great lectures and genuinely cares about whether her students are gaining a good understanding of the material. Don't expect to coast by, because she does expect you to put in work, but there are opportunities for extra credit. Her tests are difficult, but the study guides are helpful so that you know what's expected.
I want to say that Professor Oberlaender has to be one of the most caring persons I have ever met. She was super helpful this semester and I am sure that everyone who had had her would say the same. I don't think I would have passed without her help. She took the time to be there and was extremely understanding for my difficult time. Thank you!!!
I highly recommend this professor for your art history courses. She not only provided insightful lectures into the world of Western art, but the textbook chapters and exams were assigned at a comfortable pace for the semester as well --plus there were various extra credit opportunities. Most importantly, she is very approachable and caring!
Professor Oberlaender does an excellent job at lecturing and teaching! The thing I like about her lectures is that she explains the material well and gives definitions of relative terms in the textbook. Her study guides for the exams are super helpful to use while reading each textbook chapter. She is also very caring and responds fast to e-mails!
The class starts out with cave art and goes up to the Gothic period. The problem, for a non-art majors, is that once you get up to late Ancient Rome the class gets much harder. This is because at this point we know the names of the artists and so have to begin remembering specific artists and their works. Overall information and interesting though.
She is a good honest person who is also willing to work with you in a struggle. Pretty much you get what you put in so don't expect a free pass but don't expect to be raked over the coals.
I took art history- renaissance to contemporary online with this professor! The 5 exams are challeging, but the answers can be found. Chapters are long but the quizzes on them are easy. 1 introductory discussion. 1 essay on your favorite & least favorite painting&1 scavenger hunt project. Overall an easy class, just a bit time consuming.
I took her art history, she had hard tests, pointless assignments. I don't live in Fl anymore it is not a out of state friendly class. She had 2 assignments one was visit a museum, which is fine excep it caused me $40 to only get a d on the paper. The other assignment was a scavenger hunt with buildings. Ned-less to day i barley passed her class.
Just put in the effort and she will be understanding. I put in the work throughout the term and one day missed two quizzes that were due and she was kind enough to allow me to do them afterward. My only complaint is the online format of the textbook isn't ideal, and without a physical copy you will have to take many notes or use other resources.
The exams is a bit time consuming like 50 questions. I recommend to used the Powerpoint to study for the exam instead of the textbook (it's awful to read and shows no picture of paintings). The Art Contemporary Discussion and the Architecture Scavenger was easy to complete.
My favorite teacher for both Art History and learning online. She's patient, respectful, and makes things easier/more fun to understand, which is especially important with this challenging subject. She cares about every student equally and lets you turn in late work, which is helpful, but if you follow the class schedule, you won't have to! :)
Professor Oberlaender is the best professor I've had at SPC. I took her course during the summer. The course was very organized. She gives back great feedback about your discussions and projects. Tests are the only thing I struggled with. Read ALL of the textbook chapters. She really cares about her students. Will take her courses again.
Her syllabus was very standard and her expectations are super clear. She was really flexible with me, and she truly loves art which makes her class much more enjoyable. She allows a grace period for submissions with point deduction rather than you missing the due date and receiving a zero. I would absolutely take any of her courses again.
The most interesting class I have ever taken! Prof. Oberlaender gives amazing lectures, and you can tell how much she cares about the subject and her students. The assignments were difficult, but creatively driven and rewarding. I always looked forward to attending her lectures, even though they were lengthy. I wish I could take this class again!
I took this class as a follow-up to Art History I, and was pleasantly surprised to find that it was much more involved and interesting. Professor Oberlaender is very knowledgeable in art history, and I wish I had been able to attend her in-person lectures. I greatly enjoyed the museum field trip she organizes, a great experience for the semester!
Professor Oberlander provides most of the resources for you to be successful in her class, including a variety of assignments and opportunities for extra credit. However, she lacks tact when providing feedback, and if you miss a single assignment she gets too caught up in unnecessary petty comments, making it an uncomfortable learning environment.
Her class is well managed, due dates are very precise, and she is very passionate when it comes to art. I love how she describes everything in detail without stuttering and she is very understanding as well. Be sure to do your work on time because she is very serious about the deadlines of the assignments. I would take her again!
Professor Oberlaender's art history class is well-structured and engaging. The syllabus is clear, with manageable assignments and exams. Using the PowerPoint slides and Unstuck AI for study prep, rather than just the textbook, really helps. Overall, a rewarding class worth taking.
Great class with a great textbook. Very informative. The exams were fairly lax with the emphasis being on reading and learning the material over simple regurgitation.
This class is online. This professor goes out of her way to not make it that way. She has assignments such as scavenger hunts where you have to go around the city taking pics of art, which yourself included in them. It's great to do this but.... gas is extremely high. So to have to go around town locating all of this is very inconsiderate.
