Great professor maybe one of the best here. Lectures are mandatory but very interesting and she cracks lots of jokes to keep you entertained. Not very much homework but easy exams!
She drops the lowest quiz and lowest homework assignment. Homework assignments are kind of hard but interesting. Exams are pretty straight forward, but study. Class is necessary, lectures are not online.
I didn't do great in this class because I never went but Ruppert is an awesome professor. She loves students and she loves crime. The tests are super easy and there is weekly at home reading quizzes. There was two papers, but a third optional paper could replace a low paper grade. I would totally take one of her classes again.
Enjoyed the material and prof, but the class was structured weird. Quizzes based on reading but confusing before lecture. Must complete 2/3 homeworks (important!), 3 tests total. Overall a good class for any Crim major, but you'll have to make an effort for the grade. Use the textbook companion site for quiz help and test study.
Could have gotten a better grade if I studied a bit more. She was an overall good professor. Just read the book, do the quizzes, do the homework, and fill out the study guide and you will do well. Test had some tricky questions but overall was simple.
I absolutely love Prof Ruppert. She is young and funny and makes lectures pass by in a breeze. She always answers any questions. Her exams ARE hard, but she definitely prepares you for them. Put in the effort, go to class, do the work, and you will be more than fine. I look forward to taking more of her classes. Take her if you can!
Ruppert is so nice! She goes slow enough in lecture, but still puts the power points online. Class is mandatory, because she gives a lot of point earning opportunities (basically 1 or 2 question quizzes you can use your notes on). Ruppert makes class interesting and is very funny and cute.
This was my first criminal justice course and I wasn't disappointed! Prof. Ruppert is such a great professor and she makes going to class fun. The tests aren't too bad, but you definitely need to study. On the other hand, her TA does grade the homework pretty harshly. I would recommend spending a lot of time on the homework!
Took Drugs and Society, which is in itself an interesting class. Prof Ruppert is a very easy grader and a great, straightforward lecturer. She's very approachable and is great at explaining difficult concepts. Super chill class experience and showed us lots of helpful video clips to go along with the content. Would 100% take again.
I've taken multiple classes with Professor Ruppert and she is awesome every time. Theres weekly reading quizzes, 3 homework assignments, and 3 exams. Exams are tough so attending lecture is important. Overall, she's very nice and respectful towards students and makes lecture entertaining. Just do the work and study and you'll get a decent grade.
I have taken three classes from her, and I have absolutely loved all of them! She is a wonderful professor, and is always ready to answer questions. She responds to emails quickly and thoughtfully. All course requirements are clear, and homework schedule is easy to follow. One of my favorite professors!
Overall a pretty cool person. Her lectures are easy to follow and understand but her exams are just so hard for no reason. It's almost as if she wants her students to fail. Makes you memorize unnecessary facts and stats for no reason and words questions insanely hard with trick questions. She made a fun, interesting course suck...
Professor Ruppert is very caring and understanding with students. She can connect well with the students as well. If you don't show up to class or discussion, you're pretty much screwed because the tests are hard even showing up to every lecture!
Great professor! I would take more classes with her too. She has clear expectations and is great at lecturing.
Great speaker even better looking!
Prof. Ruppert is amazing in lecture and really makes sure she covers everything that she puts on tests/exams. She encourages people to come to office hours and is a great help when giving feedback!
Professor Ruppert is very personable and nice. Going to class is somewhat mandatory as there are Point Earning Opportunities (review from last class) in lecture, but discussion... not so much.
Really good professor, super nice and is very accessible however the tests are very hard.
Professor Ruppert is really nice and approachable. Her lectures are very interesting and informative. Discussions were pointless. The exams are really specific and study guides don't reflect how the exam will be.
She is a great professor, but the overall class is alright. It is broken down a new topic a week, which is a great format. The tests are harder than the homework. Expect to read a fair amount from the textbook. There were three papers, one which is optional. Would recommend this class, but be prepared to work and attend lecture for random quizzes.
She is very friendly and wants you to excel in the class. Tests can be challenging but she will take off questions if the class as a whole did not do well. Keeps lectures very interesting and conversational. I have taken 3 classes with her and really enjoy her personality.
Prof Ruppert is my favorite at the University. This is my third class with her and I have enjoyed every one. You need to go to the lectures to pass the class but they are very entertaining and not at all a waste of time. Her exams can be a little confusing but overall, she is a great professor.
Really enjoyed taking this course with Prof Ruppert. She made the lectures really interesting. The lecture material is pretty much the textbook material so you don't really have to worry too much about going in depth with the textbook besides when taking the quizzes. 3 homework papers and a quiz once a week on a chapters. Overall good professor.
The content of the class is engaging, but how Prof. Ruppert has decided to present the information is not skillfully done. If you are a student who struggles to focus, Prof. Ruppert prefers to insert her personal life way too much in her discussions. Also, any conservative students should be weary of expressing their beliefs in class or in hw.
Prof Ruppert is a good professor overall. For policing in modern society, the Tests are fairly easy and the material is easily memorized. DO NOT TAKE STUDENT PRACTICUM IN POLICING. She is the professor for that class but it is taught by police officers. They are inconsistent in grading and an A is impossible if you miss a single class.
It is very difficult to learn with her lectures online this semester, she is having us watch lectures she recorded from 2015. She is very participation heavy in these lectures which can get annoying. This class is not an easy gen ed like I thought it would be. There are papers, exams, reading quizzes, and lecture points.
Absolutely loved her this semester, and will take her classes again! She's super kind and clear and it's obvious she cares about her students and is very knowledgeable. With the pandemic, I personally loved how she set up her class and lectures, and I really enjoy her teaching style.
Really enjoyed her class, even online. The course material was easy to access and understand. The 3 exams were semi-difficult but fine with some studying. The papers/written assignments were graded harder than I expected but after the first one, I knew what to expect and improved on the next two. Overall, I would recommend her and this course. :)
This professor has chosen to not put any work into teaching and rather put out lectures from 2015 instead. The assignments were graded way too difficult for an intro class that the professor puts no care or effort into and the tests were the same way too. She obviously does not really care about her students or their success that much.
Drugs Deviance and Social Control was a very interesting class, if you study the study guide she gives well and fill it out you will get a good grade. 3 papers (homework) but only the strongest 2 count. Weekly quizzes that come from the book but a lot of them are on quizlet. Overall I would recommend.
If I could give her a 0 ranking I would. I would rather take biochemistry again than take this class. Prof. Ruppert prides herself so much on having a difficult class, however it is only difficult because she does not teach the material that is on the exam. You could study for hours on end, but it is useless because the exam is different.
When I took this class it was online. I think that Professor Ruppert doesn't do well with this type of class. I also think that her notes and lectures arent easy to follow and it can quickly become very easy to get lost. Her style of teaching wasn't for me, but overall the class wasn't extremely difficult.
Exams make up most of your grade but the information doesnt come from lectures. Her lecture notes leave gaps where you have to find information yourself. Studying is pointless when the tests are random. Talks about her kids the whole lecture period and then gives a graded in lecture question. 3 homework assignments that are graded hard.
Doesnt provide full lecture notes. Gives you a PEO as she is still teaching and you have minimal time to answer. Exams are random because they dont cover the same material we have learned. Would never take a course from this prof. if my life depended on it. Criminology is simple to understand, but not when the exams are unfamiliar material
I pray the University re-evaluates this professors ability to teach. Awful. Terrible. Bad attitude. Would never recommend this professor to anyone.
This class was online but the instructor was engaging. Material was interesting. Exams were tough but the study guides and reviews were helpful.
Favorite class this semester - not a ton of homework, exams were not terrible, lectures were super entertaining. I would definitely recommend this class!
Prof. Ruppert has a lot of reading for this class and it is very interesting sting material. However the lectures seem to go very in detail so it is hard to cover everything. The class is much more than knowing facts it is connecting themes and theories.
I took this class online - she mentioned that this was required because of covid and in the future it would be in person. I took this and another class (in person) and thought her lectures were interesting and a good pace. In person is better! This class covers a lot of material and exams were somewhat hard.
I took this class and 1410 at the same time. This one is easier (but was also I'm person). She covers a lot but the readings and lectures were very easy to follow. Exams were not that bad and the study guides really covered most of the questions.
Entertaining lectures, always available for help and support, genuinely cares about her students' success. My favorite teacher at UIowa by a mile.
Professor Ruppert is a great teacher. She is so knowledgeable and her classes are great. Lectures are mandatory (her slides are posted with missing material) There is weekly quizzes, but limited homework. Loved all the classes i've taken with her (: I recommend !!
Professor Ruppert is amazing! Her lectures are interesting and she she is able to get students talking - it makes lecture go by fast. I am not super interested in policing but she makes it engaging and gives good examples. The study guides are long but everything from the exams are in there!
Loved taking her class.
Professor Ruppert is one of my favorite professors so far. She is dedicated, caring, and very knowledgeable about the subjects she is teaching. You HAVE to go to lecture or else it is hard to understand the material. If you pay decent attention in lecture you will do well on the exams. In this class, just reading the textbook is not enough.
I have taken many of Prof. Rupperts course and enjoyed all of them. She has amazing lectures, and I have learned so much from her. If you go to UIOWA I highly suggest taking one of her classes!
Prof. Ruppert is a great professor. She is funny and nice, and lectures are never boring. Make sure you go to class because she does point opportunities every day and they add up. Her exams are hard because her multiple choice options have "all of the above" or some variation, so you need to know everything about everything. GO TO OFFICE HOURS!
Michaela is the best professor. All she does is talk about her kids and Tyler Anderson. Tyler Anderson is a professional iowa elite cheerleader. If you want to to be successful as a cheerleader and criminal justice major take her class. She is the first coach to win a summit title. Highly recommend. Xoxo
tests are hard and powerpoints are left blank so you have to go to lecture in order to get the notes.
Ruppert's lectures are entertaining. She gives good examples. You do have to go to class and the tests are challenging but the information is all on the study guide and covered in lecture.
She is the best professor of all time. She gives every student everything you would possibly need to succeed and never tries to trip you up. She also keeps the material very interesting and she gets to know her students.
She is one of the best professors at University of Iowa. She teaches with passion. She includes personal stories from her life into topics we learn. To do well in this class go to every lecture, take notes, and do the readings!
As a business major, I don't care for crim and this is just a gen-ed for me. That being said, Prof. Ruppert is very knowledgeable, entertaining, and understanding. She makes the class relatable to her and our life experiences effectively. The course's difficulty is exactly what it should be for an intro/gen-ed. Challenging, but easy if you work.
Was amazing. Such a kind heart and good teacher, 10/10 would recomend
She posts her lecture slides online, but there is a lot of attendance, usually twice a week. There are 2 papers that are worth 15% total that are graded pretty tough. The textbook can be found online for free and it is only used for the weekly quiz. The weekly quiz also may or may not be on Quizlet. Exams are fairly easy as long as you pay attention.
Professor Ruppert is my favorite professor at UIowa. I have taken several classes of hers and am running out of ones to take. Lectures are entertaining and class is organized and clear-cut. Attendance is mandatory she does PEO's pretty much every other class. If you go to lecture and take notes you will do well in this class.
The way Professor Ruppert taught this class was fantastic. She made me so interested in the material that I was excited to do homework, her lectures were engaging, and she showed so much care for the material she was teaching.
I loved Prof. Ruppert, I'm taking her again next semester! She is super nice and understanding, her lectures are well paced, and she tells fun little stories during lectures. She is super cool, I highly recommend her to anyone. Not a super tough grader, and not a ton of homework. Overall I really loved her class.
Truly an amazing prof. Super engaging, would take all of her classes if I could!
She is one of the best professors I've ever had. She sticks you with a lot of information that is sometimes difficult to grasp, but her exams come with study guides that outline exactly what you need to know. There are quizzes every week through ICON that are only 10 questions and relatively easy. She is awesome.
Her lectures are amazing but if you don't go, you will not pass. Lots of material but the study guides are basically the test. Three papers throughout the semester and the TAs will help if you reach out.
Michaela was my favorite professor that I have had at Iowa. Her lectures are interesting and enjoyable, and she is very good at her job. The work is not too difficult, but you get out what you put in. I would 100% take this class again. I learned a lot and enjoyed it a ton.
Exams and assignments are difficult, but her lectures are engaging and fun. She deeply cares about each of her students. Personally, I found the readings to be excessive, but most exam and quiz questions come directly from the textbook and/or lecture. A LOT of content but a very interesting course with lessons that will definitely stick with me.
She tells you exactly what you need to do to do well in the class. Lecture was engaging and I thought her test prep days were super helpful. Great professor all around.
Professor Ruppert was a great teacher. Class was pretty challenging, but the lectures were very helpful. GO TO LECTURES BEFORE TESTS. She explains a lot in those classes.
She's very nice & caring. Will make accommodations. Online quizzes are easy (open note). Attend lectures to get an A in class. No need to read book. Test are multiple choice all questions relatively straight forward and easy. Very little is graded; quizzes, two writing assignment, PEO (class participation), tests, & final. Discussion class is easy.
Ruppert is great, I've had four classes with her, and she is just a good professor. Its not always an easy A, but you won't have to worry about getting a terrible grade or anything.
Professor Ruppert gives great and engaging lectures. Make sure to do the readings and take the reading quizzes seriously because they're often test questions. Overall a decently challenging course, but very manageable if you put in the work. The grading is fair and the exams line up with course material.
Professor Ruppert expects a lot from her students, but she was a great professor. She communicates what she wants clearly with students. There are a few major papers, two midterms, and a final exam. The papers take time, but are easy to write if following the rubric. The midterms and finals were exactly what was on the study guides.
Papers were tough but learned lots in the lectures. Attending the lectures and taking good notes will translate into a good exam grade.
All of her assignments made sense with what we were learning in lecture, although the first paper was very difficult for me). Most importantly gives great feedback and seems interested in us fully grasping concepts. She did a great job with this class and I learned a lot.
She's great, laidback, makes the material interesting, and sets clear guidelines and rules. I recommend not skipping out on the lectures as she gives out important information, especially before midterms and exams. The papers had clear guidelines that were easy to follow, quizzes were easy, two midterms, and a final. Studying is IMPORTANT!
Prof. Ruppert was amazing! She always made lectures fun to listen to, and she explained everything clearly! She also was very good about answering any questions or concerns. Her TAs are also amazing, I highly recommend Anna.
This class was mainly focused on lecture materials along with textbook readings that go along with weekly quizzes. You have two main papers due, but they are a maximum of 3 pages.
Overall, Prof. makes it fun and the class was interesting, I think it's a great gen ed class to take. TAs make sure to give feedback, you get to do fun discussions and play Kahoot for reviews. No mandatory attendance for lectures, but yes for discussions. Quizzes are easy, papers are fine, and midterms aren't that bad.
BOT. The bun is iconic... but man she a bot.
Go to lecture! She does give grades for attending lecture and the exams are on mostly lecture topics. 50 minutes goes by fast - engaging and explains things in a way that is easy to follow.
This was an 8 a.m. class but lecture attendance was graded/required. I didn't dread going to class and surprisingly Ruppert was able to get the class talking and participation was strong for it being early. Interesting topics covered in engaging ways. I would recommend!
For a Criminology or similar major, this class makes sense to take. As a gen ed however, not so much. 3 exams, 3 papers (unnecessarily tough grading for a 1000 course), & mandatory lecture with even one lecture missed resulting in points off. Takes about as much time as many of my major-related classes. If you need a grade booster gen ed, skip it.
This class covers a lot but the lectures are interesting - great gen ed. Exams are tough but the study guides help. You need to attend lectures and discussion sections, they're graded.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Super interesting class and she has so many stories from her life, you can tell she loves what she does. Come to lectures or you won't understand anything (she does PEOs almost every lecture for participation points) Would def take more classes with her, made criminology fun. And it's pretty easy just study
Amazing professor who truly cares about the student, and teaches an engaging and not too difficult class. Does a good job of engaging the class and getting them talking, not a snooze fest. Reading can be long, but it genuinely informative, and helps a lot. Provides tons of online resources and review time. Great freshmen class to get started.
She is a great lecture and I really enjoyed her class. Lectures are information heavy and most of the infromation is on the exams. Very exam heavy worth over 50% of the grade. Two papers not very difficult the second paper sucks. Attandence is mandatory and will drop your grade harshly. Commuincation with your TA and professor will help you a lot.
I have taken two of her classes, and I just love the way she teaches. She makes lectures interesting, and her drugs class is my favorite class I have taken at UI. There are written attendance questions once a week, so attendance is mandatory. I would not skip though because she posts the slides but leaves out some of it so you have to be there.
She's definitely an engaging instructor and her lectures were far from boring! The exams were easy as long as you paid attention to the lectures and attended review days! She doesn't allow extensions or make-ups on quizzes but she lays out what is expected of you on the first day of class. I would definitely take a class with her again.
Great lectures, funny, caring, and relatable. Was very realistic with expectations, wanted the best for students, but still wanted us to learn. Attendance is important and participation matters, but honestly loved going to class as a criminology major. Loved the way she ran the course and have already enrolled in more of her classes.
Professor Ruppert was a nice professor and was passionate about what she was teaching, but the way she organized her lectures was very difficult. The course was heavy and it was hard to keep up with notes. And if you missed something in lecture, it wasn't always in the slides. There was also a lot of reading that was hard to keep up with.
emailed quickly & was kind, but the course is reading heavy (quiz every week w/ textbook readings) and lectures were mandatory. the slides sometimes were missing info that was only available during lecture, so you really had to go. ta's can grade your essays kind of harshly. there's probably an easier gen ed for you to take
Overall not a difficult class if u put in a little bit of effort. Great at communicating concepts in lecture to guide your understanding and the exams aren't to difficult.
This is my second class with Prof. Ruppert - her lectures are entertaining and she makes the content relatable to real-life. She definitely tries her best to help students succeed. Go to class, take good notes and don't skip the review sessions!
Missed 3 classes cause I had the flu and it dropped my grade from an A to a C. After that I couldn't get it back up to an A, so i recommend going to class even if you're sick. Was an 8 am class but expected us to be excited and ready to participate. Her exams are difficult especially with the true/false and none/all of the above questions.
10/10 would take again. Lecture attendance is mandatory however, and there are LOTS of readings.
Aight she isnt bad,, she just can come off a super rude at times. The temps were below freezing one day and she basically laughed in our faces for not cancelling class. Show up to lecture or ur gonna lose a ton of points. Lectures arent terrible as she is pretty engaging.
Took this class as a gen ed and I would definitely take it again! Taking another class with her even though it isn't in my major. Be sure to attend lectures as she covers a lot. She keeps class engaging and is funny. Exams are ok if you use the study guide and review materials given.
Took policing at 8 a.m. because Ruppert is the best (and I needed the credit for my major). This is the third class I have taken with her. She is fair, consistent and really wants her students to succeed. Highly recommend!
Great class - Exams and homework were easier than intro. All her lectures are interesting and relatable. Attend lecture, use the study guides for exams.
Not too hard for an intro level course, but felt harder than it had to. Only including some of the info on slides is something Ive never seen before and seems to hurt student's learning. This makes attending very important, because if you miss a topic, you've missed it. The rest of the work is pretty easy tho, but the class just felt very janky.
Great lectures, funny, quick to respond to email/available. Very realistic/up front with expectations. I dont really get the neg comments about attendance, notes etc. Carly her policies, is very fair and accommodating if you communicate! Not an easy, gimme course but she wants the best for her students and really promotes learning over the easy A.
If you are able crim major do the internship option for your Capstone! The experience was invaluable and the class so, so beneficial. I finished with a job offer and networking/experience you just can't get in a traditional classroom!
The 2 homework assignments were challenging to write under the limit and how they're graded depends on the TA you get. Lecture is interesting because of how Prof Ruppert taught, even though it was at 8 am. Easy reading quizzes if you do the readings. Attendance not mandatory but sometimes there are activities graded during lecture, so show up.
Prof Ruppert is an amazing professor who cares deeply about her students. Even if you aren't interested in the field of criminology, you will learn something. I have had her as a professor twice and am taking another course with her in the fall.
ABSOLUTE QUEEN! I took this class for the Social Science credit and I absolute loved it. I wish I could switch majors just to have more classes with her. She is absolutely and made this class enjoyable. There are three exams all multiple choice very easy IF YOU GO TO LECTURE. Espessially the one before the exams (she basically gives you answers)
I had Prof. Ruppert throughout my undergrad. She has always been engaging with students and willing to provide clear/transparent feedback.
This class was an online, summer class. It moved quickly but she was well organized and paced things in a way that kept me on track. The online proctor's for exams was weird but I understand the reason for using it. Overall, the class was interesting and super engaging and well organized compared to a lot of other online courses.
Prof Ruppert was my favorite instructor throughout my time at UI. All her classes are structured very similar and while she expects you to learn the material and demonstrate your understanding, grading is fair across the board. She's funny, lectures are entertaining and it is clear she wants the best for her students!
She has been the best professor I have had at Iowa. Very good at explaining the content and has very thorough lectures. My TA is also very good and goes even more in depth. It is a lot to remember but the class is structured in a way that allows anyone to succeed. Also, the best and most organized ICON page.
Professor Ruppert goes above and beyond. She has taken time to set up guest speakers, field site visits, bring case studies for practice into the classroom, etc. that align with this class. She keeps class fun but makes sure we cover the necessary ground. Highly recommend taking class from her if you are able.
Standards for the class are clear. Not a gimme elective but a very interesting class and fair. Ruppert is readily available and goes above and beyond to help her students
She's great, laidback, lectures are interesting. I recommend not skipping out on the lectures as she gives out important information, especially before midterms and exams. The papers had clear guidelines that were easy to follow, quizzes were easy, two midterms, and a final. Use the study guides and tests are fine.
Grades come from tests and homework. Lots of topics covered but for a gen ed the class is interesting, lectures are great and engaging - be sure tonattend class and use the study guides!
This professor was very educated and knew what she was talking about. The only thing was that she speaks very fast, and no extra credit opportunities. If you pay attention and go to class, you'll do great.
Really good professor and gives great lectures. Talks pretty fast but gives great info. Genuinely wouldn't have wanted a different professor for this course. Pretty witty, fun, and realistic, which helped the class feel less intimidating!
Ruppert is a baddie no cap! She is so silly in her lectures and will give you extra credit if you do something funny or embarrassing. She is full of energy due to her drinking Bang energy as her breakfast every morning so be ready to match her high energy. Her hair may be a croissant but its rockin and poppin.
As a CRIM major, there is a reason she's director of the undergrad department. (and a PhD baddieeeee). She grades fairly easy for her papers. Her exams are difficult, but if you go to lecture you'll be fine. You're not going to want to miss lecture though! She's super engaging and very caring towards her students!
I have taken every class possible with Ruppert, she has an amazing personality and makes lectures interesting, you can also tell she genuinely cares for her students. I took a 8am class with her last semeste and I genuinely looked forward to her class every morning. Best Professor I've had in my 4 years at Iowa, can't recommend her enough.
Ruppert was a great professor! She knew what she was talking about. However, there test were pretty average and attendee was mandatory. There were online quizzes each week, two papers, mid term and final. Harder gen ed but a great teacher
She was a great professor, she talks really fast so try to take notes before class so you can catch what she says in lecture. Her tests are completely based on lecture and readings, but lecture is lowkey fun because she tells funny stories. Make sure your TA is good though for your essays.
Great professor honestly but a hard gen ed.
