guys a hard grader but hes a nice teacher and he knows his stuff Kinda funny alos
hard class with alot or reading, but very interesting
He's tough, but he's a great teacher, and a great speaker, so he's never boring.
Excellent speaking skills. I took 5 classes with him, and enjoyed each one. You have to work for the higher grades, but you have a sense achievement if you do really well in his classes
great great great professor, inspired me to become a history minor in my junior year. he really ropes you into what hes saying and your mind will never wander. and hes really funny as well.
Best Prof. in Stony Brook, period. He is tough, but fair, and will help you if he knows you're trying. He's friendly, and his lectures are so interesting, you feel like you're listening to a radio broadcast. The Best.
The most work and best fun I in a college course. He is severely hard, but extremely knowledgable and brings you into the material - he doesn't just lecture.
The best professor at Stonybrook University. Amazing. He is a wealth of knowledge, insight and ability.
very interesting class
Brilliant teacher! I have never met a Professor who knows his material so well. He's not someone you can BS with....but class is worth taking, because you'll actually learn and be interested. Hes also quite a comedian..
great professor. lots of challenging reading but worth it
Very helpful and understanding, as well as clear
GREAT teacher. Very challenging but I learned the most in this class out of all my others. Very funny too.
i'm just saying he's hot because I was told so.
This guy holds a lecture class of 400 students, and every student is hanging on his every word. Fascinating material, great presentation, but not an easy grade. If you go Stony Brook, you HAVE to take one of his classes.
NEVER went to lecture or did any reading. only went to the recitation cause attendance was required...walked out with a B...class is extremely easy
Fabulous: I feel like bringing popcorn to his lectures because they are so freaking entertaining. Here's the deal: Five books/papers. You do three of the five, or all five and he drops the two lowest grades. The midterm and final are difficult, but generally easy to get a B on so long as you listen.
World War One is awesome!! The simulations rock, Barnhart we love you!!!
awesome, simply awesome prof. If you go to Stony, you MUST take his class before graduation :) just make sure you're ready to work your @$$ off :)
Outstanding! Helped out veteran's during and after 9/11 as we were taking his class and preparing to deploy overseas! Semper Fi, Mike!!
God? We call him Barnhart.
Barnhart is an amazing professor. He makes every class interesting and fun. This is besides the fact that he's an incredibly accomplished academician
**sigh** he's amazingly brilliant, and you really just need to take his class to know what it is that makes Barnhart such a great teacher. He's hard as hell, but you'll learn SO MUCH from him. His stories rock and he's always willing to help his students with confusing stuff. DEF take his class!!!
The best prof at SB.A great man and a brilliant teacher, I cannot write enough how amazing this man is.I wrote my thesis with him and he was amazing, he knows the content like no other.Aside from his politics he is the best in any school, Yale included.
really top-notch professor, very stimulating lectures, funny as hell, and he's incredibly challenging. He gives a lot of work and assigns VERY difficult reading, but it's worth it. I've learned SOOO much from this guy's class. Don't leave stony without taking a Barnhart class!!!
Easily the most amazing, captivating professor in all of Stonyland. Unlimited potential to entertain/engage. Do not leave SB without a lil' Barnhart on your transcript.

He is a history God. My only complaints were that sometimes people took the front row seats so that I could only bask in his Godliness from a far.
He was an amazing teacher I got a B in the course. It was pretty easy if you just went to class. I didn't even open the text book and still managed to get a B
Barnhart is THE MAN... He knows how to keep a lecture interesting
Amazing professor. Difficult courseload but you can tell the man knows what he's doing. Great overall teacher. Second best at USB, IMO.
Do it. just get ready to read your ass off
one of the best professor around! heavy reading load but keeps you interested!
Best Professor I have ever had...
Barnhart is hands down the best Professor at Stony Brook, and he had some of the most enjoyable classes.
hes a great lecturer and the class itself is very interesting. but his papers are impossible. very hard to get an A
Great lecturer and has a sense of humor. Really hard to get about a B+ on an essay, however.
Tough grader, and there is plenty to read. His lectures, are excellent though. I don't recommend for those who cannot function before 11:00 because the lectures are key, for the final and midterm. There are also two unannounced quizzes.
Hard grader, but excellent lecturer. I actually enjoyed going to lecture, breathed humor into a subject which could be boring at times. Definately take his class but be prepared to work. I got a B
Prof Barnhart is the best history professor at Stony Brook. One of the hardest professors but easily one of the most engaging and knowledgeable. And he has a great sense of humor, something most professors don't seem to have.
fun lectures, difficult to get a good grade, lots to read, no HW, 2 papers and 2 unanounced quizes +1 midterm and 1 final... however... he's a lot of fun...
Probably the best professor at SBU. People are usually upset when the lecture is over. His style isn't like he is giving a speech, but more of an hour long story that keeps you wanting more. I've taken him three times and there is a lot of reading and his grading is hard, but he'll make you a better student
Easily the best instructor that I have ever had. There is no other word for him other than amazing. Thank you, Professor Barnhart.
PROFESSOR BARNHART IS THE MAN! HIS LECTURES ARE INTERESTING AND HE REALLY CARES ABOUT WHAT HE SAYS IN CLASS. HE IS A GREAT PROFESSOR.
great professor...need sufficient essay writing skills...keeps student engaged
Great Teacher, excellent lectures, 3 papers based on books that are actually a good read Take him if you have the chance
HE IS AN AMAZING PROFESSOR. I LEARNED SO MUCH FROM HIS CLASS. I DIDNT REALLY THINK IT WAS THAT HARD- JUST GIVE HIM A ROUGH DRAFT OF YOUR PAPER B4 HAND AND HE WILL MAKE CORRECTIONS 4 U. TESTS WERENT THAT BAD- I GOT A B+ IN THE CLASS. U DEF NEED TO GO TO CLASS BC HE COVERS SOO MUCH. ONE OF BEST PROFS IVE EVER HAD- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
VERY interesting class! Best lecturer I have ever had! Many books to read on limited time frame with 3 essays on books. Midterm and final are open-ended broad questions based on material covered in lecture.
His classes are worth going to. Best Lecturer I've ever had!
Amazing Brilliant man you will enjoy any of his classes.
Hmm...dont listen to every1 giving him 5's the whole time, i got a B- and worked my butt off, his classes arent that easy at all, i dont know one some of these people r thinking, also, his classes are BORING!! no lie, i like the guy, but holy crap! all he does is talk, no power pint, nothing to see, just all talk and talks kind of fast, bein honest
Good professor, very clear, although his essays are very hard, and the books are sometimes hard to read, but very good class, take it!
Most amazing teacher ever! I hate history yet he makes me want to come every lecture and actually makes it interesting. No midterms, just quizzes and a final. How awesome is that?!?!?
Incredible professor, great class! He teaches as if telling a story. Truly good at what he does but is a strict grader.
I first had professor barnhart in HIS 105, and immediately felt he was the best teacher I have had at Stony Brook. He is easily the best lecturer at this school, and actually makes history class interesting. I am always looking for any classes he is teaching at the beginning of every semester. You will not be dissapointed with him.
Great teacher. Really engages the students in the discussion. In fact, students lead the discussions. Loved the class because I love to discuss war. I only wish we could have read more about battles as opposed to the time in between.
You should not leave Stony Brook without taking one of his classes, not matter what your major is.
I'm a 1989 alum - but my memories of the numerous classes and seminars I took with Prof. Barnhart are amazing. He was absolutely the best - of may great - professors I had in college. He made history come alive every day!
Easily best professor ever.
He's one of the snarkiest teachers I've ever had. Love it! Makes off color jokes and ties in the modern political atmosphere to situations we're learning about in class. Lectures go by quickly, but I'm taking 5-6 pages of notes every class! He makes even the most boring, political, detailed topics fascinating and hilarious.
If you want to actually learn something, I'd highly recommend this teacher. His lectures are extremely descriptive, and he emphasizes the WAY things happen as opposed to what happened. Nothing sucks more than a history professor who cares how many dates and names you've memorized. Barnhart is NOT an easy grader, but fair.
Amazing professor, leaves no detail out and makes it fun to learn. Seriously if you want to learn and get an A while doing it take this class. You pick 2/4 essays to write throughout the semester with a midterm and final. As well as 2 random quizzes which are easy.
the man is knowledgeable, and the class is definitely worth taking. Lectures are interesting and the work load isn't at all difficult. Professor does have a tendency of bringing personal politics into the classroom however. Mostly humorous observations, occasionally annoying
Not only is Barnhart damn smart, but the man is hilarious. A great teacher and I highly recommend the class.
The class was very interesting. The 2 essays weren't very difficult but the tests and quizzes are hard. The class was very interesting and he was a nice man. I would recommend him. I worked hard and I got a B. If you do not study you wont pass, but if you do you will do well.
It's not an easy class in the slightest - but it's probably the most interesting class I've ever taken. It's worth the dent in your GPA!
HIS 441 is Barnhart's WWII Simulation class, offered once every 2 years. Students inherit the role of various national leaders in 1936, are given certain options and restrictions, and must try to do as well as they can on the international stage. It is the most unique experience as an undergraduate I ever had. Excellent learning experiment.
Definitely one of the most interesting and inspiring professors at SBU. Highly recommended. His classes are not easy but they will absolutely motivate you to do the work. Kudos to Barnhart for being one of the best professors i have ever had at SBU. P.S.: It is sincerely not a good idea to be a smart ass and talk in his class.
There are no words for Barnhart. He is a god.
Barnhart gives entertaining lectures and is a great guy. This was a great class. He is a very fair grader of exams and papers
Barnhart gives entertaining lectures and is a great guy. This was a great class. He is a very fair grader of exams and papers.
Sincerely one of the greatest professors I've ever had at Stony Brook. I'm not a history major, but he made it so I was truly immersed in his lectures and the world he created. Reading is necessary, but not overly hard. I would recommend this class over any other class at stony as one of the best profs I've ever had, at any university.
Professor Barnhart is an amazing professor. The class is a little tough because of the amount of information you are responsible for. You have ample opportunities to improve your grade. He also gives great lectures with interesting stories! This prof. is a must!
Professor Barnhart is very into his subject but the way he lectures makes you feel like you are actually witnessing the events as they occur. He can be a harsh grader sometimes but he always types out his comments on how you can improve.
Professor Barnhart is the best! His lectures are fantastic, and really make history come to life. Although he is a harsh grader, he is also very willing to lend his students a helping hand. Take him; you won't regret it.
Great lecturer, nice guy, but very harsh grader. Very hard to get an A in his class.
Everyone who said he is a harsh grader is right I don't agree with some of the ways he chooses to grade. Because I was graded poorly My interest to the class didn't receive much of a jump either. I hope everyone else has a better time then I did.
nice enough professor; gives great lectures although his commentary--especially about Bush and Cheney can get annoying. i would only reccommend him if you are a good writer as he is a VERY harsh grader. If you can write well, you should get at least a B, however. There are 5 books required although you only really need to read 2 for essays.
There are 4 essays for the class, you have to do 2, the others are extra credit. 2 random quizzes that I think are difficult. One midterm on a broad topic and a similar final. He is a hard essay grader, but it is worth it if you are a history major bc he's very smart and knows what he talking about. He structures all his classes like this.
He is an awesome professor. If you think you knew about WWII, well he will teach you that you don't. His political jokes get annoying if your a Republican but they only come from time to time. He throws jokes into his lectures all the time to keep you interested. He knows what he is talking about. His grading isn't as difficult as people say.
Brilliant and funny man. Extremely fair grader. 2 pop quizzes, 2 mandatory essays, one midterm and one final. The reading material is for the most part very interesting, the lectures are always intriguing. Don't take this class, or any class with Barnhart, if you expect an easy A. Regardless, his class is completely worth the effort.
This professor is awesome, his lectures are interesting and he takes all questions. He will teach you more than you thought you would ever know about WWII. However, this class is mostly taken by history majors. Being a BME major, I seemed to struggle on the essays for the readings. He grades the essays pretty hard.
As a psychology student taking this as a dec ... I would suggest this class only to history majors, as it seemed I was the only one who wasnt. Nice guy though. 2 papers, midterm final, 2 pop quizzes (hard)
Barnhart is gift from the heavens to the History department. If you are a History major, make sure you take at least one course with him. His courses are far from easy but worth it. His lectures are very detailed and at times, hilarious. He is a tough grader and it will be hard to get an A but you will not regret taking his classes!
I took the class for personal interest and was not a history major. Probably the hardest class I've had to work for a B+. Still Barnhart is funny and interesting; well worth the effort to go to class. Pop quizzes are hard but the 2 exams and 2 papers are pretty easy if you know what he's looking for.
Definitely difficult for a non-history major, but as long as you pay attention, take notes, do the readings, and know how to write a paper well, you should be alright. You get to choose 2 papers to write based on corresponding novels, many of which are very dry & boring, so I suggest starting in advance. Difficult, but doable.
Best. Class. Ever. Take it, you will not be sorry.
Why is a 100-level history course significantly harder than a 300-level history course? I've taken 3 history courses at Stony Brook and this class was by far the hardest with the most work. Sure, the professor is a great lecturer but the amount of work is NOT worth it. Would not recommend.
Grading is more harsh than hard, if that makes any sense. If you do the work well, you'll prob get a B, but it's almost impossible to get a solid A. Recommend writing the papers early and getting the prof. to read it over; he'll do it, and it helps. Pop quizzes are very detailed and force you to keep up with rereading your lecture notes.
If reading three books and writing on them over the course of the semester seems like cruel and unusual punishment, stop reading this now and take something else. If your willing to put in some effort, get ready to enjoy some of the best lectures you've ever heard. Take at least one course with him before you graduate.
He was the only lecturer that I had that didn't make me feel bored--not once during the entire semester. If the class was only the lectures, I would take him again. However, the assigned reading and papers are more than tedious. They take a long time to read, aren't always interesting, and papers are graded harshly. Still, love the guy though.
He is a respectful professor, and he made a lot of interesting lectures. I love him so much. However, you have to be aware that a lot reading and harsh grading are coming. Anyway, he is the best professor in history department right now! For SURE!
