favors students and does not help with problems
I really like the intructor
Tried hard to help those with questions, well structured class

Helpful if you ask
Helpful if you ask after class or during office hours.
Great class and great instructor. He gives a lot of in-class quizzes, but you can work with others and he will help if you ask him. He teaches very clearly, and homework is never collected!! He also sometimes does a magic trick...very fun class!
sometimes not very clear but explains very well when you ask questions. always be prepared for quizzes! tries to pick who is having difficulty and give them the help they need in class.
Doesn't so much teach math as demonstrate what it looks like. Just teachs to the top 30% of the class. If you haven't had the class before or are a math wiz, you're probably going to end up dropping the class.
Tough class...tests very hard to pass. EWU has a terrible Math program.
Good at getting concepts across. Is also very helpful if you actually try to get help. His tests are a bit difficult, not allowing a lot of time- he likes to combine what he's taught you to see if you know your stuff. The final was forgiving.
He is a teacher that doesnt want to pass students. Out of 30 some people in my class he only passed like 3. OUCH!!! Get him out of this program.
Good lecturer but gives tests that are way too long. If you have to stop and think about something on the test, even for 2 minutes, you will not finish the test. He is yet another crappy EWU math program. It has got to be one of the worse math departments in the country.
He is a painfully average teacher. He goes through the motions but offers no insight into anything besides raw algorithms. In comparison if the otherwise bad math program, he is not too bad. He obviously thinks highly of himself as a teacher and gives tests well beyond the quality of his lectures.
This guy is a great instructor with great magic tricks. He gives a lot of in class quizes which are damn easy, its like handing out a free 10 pts every time. Tests are overall not to bad. I would definetly take him again.
Below-average teaching ability and tests are way too long. He just writes stuff on the board and talks--that's it. In-class quizzes were pointless. He's a nice guy, but I wouldn't take another class with him.
I really enjoyed this class-but it was a challenge!!!! He expects students to do the homework, understand it, and come to class regularly- he gives hard tests also. But he does challenge students to do more than go through the motions of math and actually think about it.
his class was easy if you go to class

Mike is a great math teacher, but damn his tests are long. I need more time to complete the required problems. Always ready to give help, and he really wants to see all of his students succed. If you want to take math, any teacher will do. If you want to learn math, take Grahm.
Better remember notation because on the test it can kill you, and you better go to class because we have at least two pop quizzes a week. He is nice, and he does have time to help students, but he is very critical when it comes to showing work. So go to class and notation, notation, notation!
Mike is a pretty nice guy. hes fairly helpful but also critical at the same time. likes to take pts away for every dumb little thing. he also likes to show long proofs that take 20 minutes and are no help to us students (he could better utilize that time by doing more examples). mediocre prof at best. not like dr. Rahn but not like Finnie either.
Really nice guy with a fun attitude towards math. Just do all of the homework and go to class everyday for his pop quizes (which are fairly easy because you can ask your classmates) and he will help you get through the class!
he mumbles and whispers through lecture, so if u dont want to fail, i recommend to sit in the front ! His TEST ARE LOOONG. IN CLASS QUIZ..every week.
Mike is a good instrutor. He explains calculus well and is easy to listen too. He does not take homework, but he does do a quiz, usually once a week. His tests are fair as is his grading.
Great teacher. Makes it fun to learn.
Great teacher, funny, easy to understand, and he makes everything clear. He draws pictures to help you visualize what you are trying to do. Really great. No homework but group quizes about once a week. Tests are easy if you practice suggested problems from the book. He will stay and help if you have questions or you can stop by his office anytime.
He is a very nice man with a fun personality. He gives out quizzes frequently but you get to work with group members and he will help out if you ask. Very easy. Learn the material because he will not grade on a curve, but the material is easy to understand.
very nice fun personality. fair grader.
Assigns homework but does not collect it, but it a good idea to do it anyway. There is usually a quiz once a week that you can work with a partner on, and he will help you out a ton if you ask. I found the tests the hardest part of the class and often did not do very well. Course material is helpful to everyday life.
Be sure to take your math classes from Graham! He is super nice and very helpful, more than willing to explain things after class, in his office, or by email. He's not easy, but only because he wants you to know the math. He enjoys math and always talks about the poetry of it. His subtle, but ROFL kind of humor is great. Take his class!!! :)
Mike is awesome. He is clear and concise. Very helpful and extremely fair. He will work problem after problem in order to help students understand what is going on. I should have studied more so I got a lower grade-not his fault-mine alone. Take his class as I passed it on the first try.
Fantastic instructor!!! His sense of humor's hilarious an that helps to make class fun. Class isn't mandatory, but go to it, he has pop quizzes that are great learning experiences. No homework, but the problems are very useful. He'll answer all of your questions and even stay after class to do so. If you have to take calc, take it from Graham! :)
Good Professor! Can tell he really enjoys what he does and his jokes lighten up class. The class was hard, but it's Calc 3, so that's expected. Go to class and do the suggested problems! The pop quizes really do help you learn the matierial too so make sure you're there for them!
Great teacher! Wouldnt take another math class from anybody else. You have to go to class to pass.
Very helpful, made me interested in what I learned. I could go to him for help anytime.
Great teacher, he is witty and very funny, he is very kind and willing to help anyone wh asks for help. He is great at explaining and able to apply the work to real world stuff so it makes more sense. All around great Prof. made math less scary :) this is his calling for sure!!
Pretty good overall class
funny
Goes very fast in class and doesn't get that students may not understand everything immediately. Grades very harshly and on his own whims. Funny and smart, but does not do a very good job of teaching at all. Emphasizes the importance of the "journey" of comprehension, but all grades are dependent on tests and quizzes. not a good teacher at all.
Good teacher, his tests are near impossible though.
Graham is awesome! He is the best math professor I have ever had. Though we cover the material at a quick speed, Graham does a really good job at helping students gain a deep understanding of important concepts. You have to work hard to get a good grade, but the time is worth it.
Best teacher, best math class, he was great!
His lectures were confusing and hard to follow, and the tests were difficult and long. The class is too diverse, making a cumulative final nearly impossible. I barely passed the class, and going every day was excruciating because I knew how confused and frustrated I was going to be in class (as were the people around me).
By far one of my favorite teachers ever. Really great sense of humor and really enjoys the subject and cares about students learning. Quizzes are very helpful. He gives you the whole class, lets you work with others, and walks around and gives help. Tests aren't overly challenging if you understand the material. Highly recommend him. Great person.
Nice guy, but not a very good teacher. He tries to help students, but goes very quickly and assumes everyone is keeping up. Grades are entirely based upon tests, which he marks subjectively. You need to study very hard if you want to get a decent grade in his class.
Graham was a totally useless professor. He spent all quarter showboating and wasting time. I dropped his class and am now taking it again from someone competent. It's a night and day difference. I can't believe this person is employed, but then it is EWU which is known for its horrible math dept. Don't take anything he teaches.
Graham was not comfortable with the material and relied heavily on notes. Graham often got lost in his notes to the point that one lecture he drew a blank and stared at the white board for most of the fifty minutes trying to talk around and about series. I would avoid Graham for any of the calculus series and take Goering or Nievergelt.
He is a really hard grader on tests and doesn't really give a review. He doesn't give homework but gives problems out of the book that isn't graded. There are in class quizzes that are super easy and you get to work with partners so coming to class would be necessary. Good teacher (kind of) grades super super hard.
My favorite math professor by far. Really helpful and has a great sense of humor. If I needed more math classes, I would only take them from him.
Very great teacher!! he is very kind and has a dry humor. His quizzes are easy bc he lets you partner up, but you really got to know your material. the tests can be difficult.
Great teacher with a good sense of humor, sometimes gets lost within his own examples, but generally he always gets back on track. You can work with other people on his quizzes and he walks around and answers questions. quizzes are more or less same as tests, fair. NO assigned homework just practice problems no reason not to get an A if you work.
Very helpful teacher he really explains math concepts in every way possible so you can get the most out of your learning. loves his subject. Always willing to help and explain things in other ways, math is a hard subject but he makes it clear and simple as long as you put in your work
Do the suggested HW and you cant fail.
Graham's tests are short and to the point, covering the core topics of each chapter. He grades and returns almost every test and quiz within a day, including some feedback. He will answer questions every day at the start of class if a homework problem does not make sense. I highly recommended him if you get the chance.
He's not the easiest, there's no doubt that you have to put in some substantial hours of studying to get a good grade. He is a good teacher, though. His test are just a little bit too long.
Never assigns homework, but you better do it if you want to be able to pass the tests.
THE BEST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD. So clear and straight forward in lecture, Hilarious and loves to work with you one on one. Group quizzes! Grades on a slight curve. Study and you will do fine!
Good professor, really shows you what the mathematicians were thinking when they came up with the concepts. Take good notes to really help you later. He has a total of 12 pop quizzes, and 5 tests. Homework optional, but might help you with the tests. Every quiz you can work together and ask him questions to help, sometimes notes are allowed.
He is a tough grader that is not lenient if you make a mistake. He gives twelve pop quizzes and drops the two lowest scores. His tests are very hard but he does good lectures. He gives suggested problems... Do them! You will most definitely need the book for this class.
Requires alotta hard work and an intricate knowledge of the material to do well, but he is fair. His lectures are clear, make sense, and he stops often for questions. His tests are super tough, all his homework is optional, and pretty much all his quizzes are group efforts, so sit near someone who is good at math. Difficulty high, but fair.
He does give hard tests and grades more harshly on tests than on quizzes. His lectures are really good and he tries to explain when you might actually use the concepts you are learning which is nice. Very helpful on quizzes and willing to answer any questions you might have. Overall really enjoyed the class.
Nice guy, he is funny, but horrid lecturer. I got a 2.8 and retook the class with another professor (got a 4.0), night & day difference. His lectures are confusing and don't make anything clear. I understood that we did certain things to solve problems, but not why we did them. Be prepared to spend a long time in the math lab if you hope to pass.
Great guy. Gives very detailed lectures and will answer any questions if you are confused. Has a tendency to get distracted. Study and do suggested problems to get a good grade. Harsh grader, but totally worth it. I really enjoyed this class. Random quizzes so go to class, but on all quizzes you are allowed to work together & ask him questions.
Doesn't use web assign and doesn't grade hw, but it played a big part in doing well on quizzes and exams. He drops 2 lowest quiz scores out of 12 which helps and his lectures were generally clear. He tells you exactly what to study and expect for exams. He's very passionate about math and answers questions. Like any math class it requires effort.
Mimics stumbling through how a student may solve problems in the class. Basically he teaches in a learn from "my mistakes" way, which actually does help come exam time. It is evident that he has many years of experience, and often skips a crucial step in his workthrough, confusing some. The quizzes are often, but also group effort so not too rough.
No homework assigned so all grades based off of group pop quizzes given every other day to every 3 days. Explanations make 1/2 as much sense as the book, and the book does not explain things very well either. If you have test anxiety/learning disabilities I recommend you take another teacher.
He is approachable and a very likable person which is why i gave him 2 stars Otherwise he grades pretty tough and has the expectation that you remember everything you learned since precalc 1 He will skip steps during lecture, assuming you already knew how to do it. 4 mid terms, a final, and 12 pop quizzes are the only points you will receive no HW
He has no graded homework, no extra credit. Everything is in tests which are super stressful. Overall, horrible experience. Ruined my 4.0.
Hard to be accurate on this. He will kill your gpa if you take the class casually. But if you come to the class willing to put in LOTS of time studying, he is a good as you'll get. The feedback and help he gives is amazing. He really cares, but he can't help a person who doesn't study. I took him in calc 2, it was tough. Oh, also, he's hilarious.
There are many negative comments about Professor Graham's class. However, after taking his class I disagree. He won't give you an easy A and makes you work for your grade but he has a really good handle on the material, explains clearly and thoroughly, and is more than willing to meet after class. I wish I could take him again for Calc 4.
He is a fast teacher and can be difficult to follow in class. He can make simple concepts more complicated than they seem. I had a tutor I met with three times a week and still got consistent Cs and Ds on tests. The quizzes are helpful but his class does not prepare you for his difficult exams.
His exams are really hard no matter how much you study you still fail. Dreaded going to his class. He is nice but hard.
Dr. Graham is one of the best teachers I've had. He explains things in a clear fashion, often explaining in a " how I would do it" fashion. Never shoots down students ideas or questions, but explores them. Lots of pop quizzes, but you are able to opt out of them if you want. He does not assign homework either. I highly recommend that you take him.
Graham is Graham. He is a very good teacher and extremely thorough if you show up every day, which is awesome. He assigns homework, but you don't have to do it (I recommend you do) and he's a very rough grader on the test. He wants you to know the subject, but I also am not sure if he really cares if you don't.
Graham is a really nice guy and you can tell he actually wants to be there. The class mainly consisted of quizzes, 4 big exams, and the Final. The quizzes, however, were more like in class assignments, because you can work together and even ask him for help. If you miss a quiz day, you receive a 0, but he dropped the 2 lowest quiz scores.
Compared to other math professors, Graham is pretty good. His lectures are pretty easy to follow, and he explains things better than most. He does not grade on a curve however, and will be pretty tough on grading. He does 4 exams, a final and 10 quizzes for credit. Quizzes can be done as a group. He also assigns homework, but it's optional.
His class was thorough and very easy to follow he explained everything perfectly and answered all questions when asked. He does have random quizzes Which threw me off at first and he won't announce test so check the syllabus in advance also on the Note of quizzes he allows you to partner quiz almost the entire quarter.
He teaches in a way that is easy to understand and will answer any question you have. He always has exams and quizzes graded by the next class day. He has an exam about every two weeks but he lets you know every concept you need to for the exam the day before so you can prepare. He never has anything in the exam that he didn't focus on.
He is a good teacher and an entertaining lecturer, but he gives you a list of problems and does not assign graded home work. the only things that count towards your grade are tests and quizzes. You have to really put in the effort and take it upon yourself to practice the material.
He was so bad I had to drop his class. Grades quizzes and exams only, assigns homework, but wont grade it so it cant help offset a bad exam. He is nice, but his lectures are confusing to the point it looks like he has never taught. I talked to ex-peers and they all told me he is pretty bad and were at major risk for not passing.
Graham should never be able to teach a college class again. If you want your GPA to get bent over then take his class. If you want someone who just expects you to learn everything on your own then take Graham, everyone I talked to from my class was also failing all quarter long. Terrible lectures and he has 0 care about your effort for your GPA.
He gives a lot of tests, non mandatory homeworks and is a tough grader but he is a great teacher and is always willing to work with you
Great teacher that runs a no BS class. Grades are calculated entirely off of tests/quizzes, which he will prepare you well for. Homework is optional, allowing you the freedom to let yourself fail if you don't take the class seriously and practice, but also allows for more flexibility in your studies. Your grade will be a reflection of your effort
Graham is awful. His quizzes are unscheduled and so much of the quiz material isnt taught before the quiz is given. The tests are worth way more than they should be. You can fall as many quizzes as you want and be fine, but if you do bad on one test you may as well kiss your grade goodbye unless you do amazing on everything else.
You will never fall asleep in Graham's lectures. He keeps them very interesting and rarely goes on tangents. The course work was difficult as expected, but whatever you do, do not get behind on homework. All in all a great professor who loves what he does, answering questions, and has a deep understanding of math.
I wish I didn't take the advice from people leaving reviews here. I do not care how good you think you are at math this guy was a rude awakening for me. It wasn't until I started skipping class and teaching it to myself did I improve. Marks you down for doing math problems "in a way that is confusing" to him even if you get the right answer. Run.
Professor Graham provided immediate feedback on homework and exams. Very well organized! There were almost daily webassign homework assignments, 11 or 12 written assignments, 4 exams and a final. This is a lot of work, but getting a poor score on one exam won't tank your grade. Note: this class was taken online during COVID lockdown
Took it online. Was available, had everything ready on time and split it into digestible chunks. Took an online teaching course beforehand and it showed. Really tried hard to help us succeed in the pandemic. Hilarious dry humor.
I have taken about 6 classes with Professor Graham. While the material assigned is somewhat time consuming, the lectures are straightforward and Professor Graham is very good at responding to emails and providing help. I feel like he cares about his students and I'm sad that this is my last math class as I'd gladly take him again.
I don't understand the bad ratings. It's necessary to keep up with lectures and homework to do well, which isn't too much time. He is always willing to meet to go over tests/homework to help and has an awesome dry sense of humor. Doesn't try trick you on tests and they are very fairly graded. I highly recommend him as a math professor.
If you want to learn don't take him. I complained about him to my tutor and they said Graham is interesting. They personally liked Graham because he expects you to know the material he is teaching already. That works fine for Math majors, but I am not a Math major. I had Geology class with several students after him and we all thought he was lousy.
Do NOT take this professor. If I could I would give him a 0 out 5 stars I would. Content was fairly straight forward but Graham does not teach it well. He is not clear in his explanations and will randomly laugh and not finish his thought. Majority of the class would do awful on his exams and he would not care. Condescending when you ask for help.
Wish there was a 0 out of 5 option. Gives random pop quizzes, and when asking for help, answers condescendingly. Has a very dry sense of humor and sometimes doesn't finish thoughts. Course content was easy but Graham made it difficult to grasp. No curves on exams regardless of class average. If you bomb first exam, you're done. Would not take again
Good but tough professor. Our entire grade was based off of 4 exams, final, and 10 pop quizzes to encourage attendance. (there are 12 quizzes but the lowest 2 get dropped). If you can't make it to class, at least get notes from a friend. He does a good job teaching and explaining material, and he doesn't try to trick you on exams.
Graham will lecture for the whole class period. Read the textbook as he will not explain the concepts very well. There are 12 random pop quizzes (each worth 5 points) throughout the quarter. The quizzes are sometimes harder than the tests. He doesn't grade Homework. There are 4 tests(each worth 100 points) and a final(worth 200 points).
Graham is a great teacher, lectures are interesting and engaging, quizzes and tests are exactly what he teaches and are easy to expect what will be on them. The class is hard, because the material is hard, but he makes it easier
Follow the calendar. He warns you there are pop quizzes, but it's easy to predict when they are. If you stay up on the reading/homework and ask questions you will do fine in his class. Easy grader on the quizzes but a bit stricter on the exams. Very helpful in office hours, and answers questions thoroughly and patiently. I hope to take him again.
Great professor overall. Yeah, he has pop quizzes but you can work with classmates and use notes, so it's really more like an in-class assignment. Just show up to class, do your work, and you'll be fine. He's really funny and helpful when you have questions.
Helpful when you have questions and sneaks in a joke or two during a lecture. Really all you could want in a professor.
Very condescending when asked for help with material.
Math is a subject I NEED constant practice in; he only gives suggested problems from the book and none of it is graded which to me feels lazy. When he helps you on problems during class he talks down to you, and you're left just as confused as before you asked. He gives surprise pop quizzes with no leniency on making them up.
He is the WORST pls dont take him
Graham only really tells you how to do something, but does not take the time to actually show you. There are rarely any examples of how to use formulas and he is not very good at explaining things. There are so many pop quizzes, but he does let you work with the people next to you. The exams were fairly easy. I would not recommend him!
While I love this guy as a person and think he's got a really good sense of humor, he is not a good professor. He teaches as though his students already know the material and really only grades tests and quizzes (random). You get a one sided notecard for tests which I have found doesn't even help most students because we are so lost.
Professor Graham's class can be challenging, but using resources like Unstuck AI alongside the textbook can really help. His lectures are straightforward but cover the core concepts well. Stay engaged, complete practice problems, and you'll do just fine.
What's difficult about taking this class with him is the homework isn't required therefore it isn't graded. Your entire grade is based on pop quizzes and exams. It depends on the type of student you are and you might struggle because the homework isn't there to boost your grade. Which is the only reason why I wouldn't take him as a professor again
I would hear a lot of people hating on this particular class but if you show up and put the work in you will be 100% be fine. He gives quizzes but he walks around helping people and you get to use your notes and work with others. Quizzes also help you with the tests because the questions on the quizzes are literally on the test. Recommend.
You can tell he enjoys being a professor. I liked his lecture style. Only thing I have to say is If you don't show up for class you won't pass, he doesn't take attendance but there are random quizzes/group projects. Nothing on the quizzes is a surprise, nothing outside of what he has lectured on.
get ready to teach yourself EVERYTHING. Only teaches through examples and isn't much help when you ask for it, doesn't grade homework so class grade is just quizzes and exams. Quizzes are random and there are 12 throughout the quarter. Very difficult course to work through.
I've never despised a professor this much until I took his class. No homework, so only thing being graded is quizzes and exams. Doesn't explain the examples and how he got his answer. If you ask a question about how he got that answer he just points and says “well it's just this” but doesn't explain. DO NOT RECOMMEND! Hated going to class.
