You must attend class and study to pass.
Hurst is not terribly hard....going to class is a requirement but his tests were not really complicated all it requires is a little practice nothing out of the norm
Go to class everyday and study hard for the test because he makes them hard. In my opinion stay clear find another chem teacher.
Bad teacher. Doesn't explain very well. You'll do better if you don't go to class and study on your own.
Bad teacher. Don't go to class and study on your own you'll do fine. I suggest you find another teacher though.
I don't know why they all hate him. He is a nice energetic guy that takes a lot of time explaining ideas and concepts in simple and easy to relate ways. You do NOT have to go to class and the tests aren't hard if you know what you're doing. Only one required project.
Great teacher. This class is not a cakewalk, but if you study, you will get an A. I love this teacher because he's lively and animated. It made it much easier to learn the material. I never grew bored of the class. It's hard to figure out what's on the tests from just the chapters alone. But if you take his notes, that's exactly what's on the tests
Nice and tries to keep the class interested. His tests aren't that hard as long as you study. You do the work and you'll make an A no problem.
go to class, and you will benefit from it cause tests are pretty much the notes. just practice the problems and put some time and effot and guaranteed A.
Professor Hurst is pretty much a jerk. When you ask him questions he answers them in the most condescending way possible. Not helpful at all, and especially cranky in the mornings.
boring lecture, random bonus points for attendance. does not explain well and tests are hard. gives bonus point opportunities for each test. i've had him twice and both times ended up with an a, even though i made low b's on tests so the extra credit and labs do help
Horrible teacher, tests are hard. he rambles on and almost at times loses his focus on the subject. seems to always be very sarcastic. however he seems like a nice guy and its always funny to hear him say swirly and fizzes
Hurst is not a very good teacher. I would really opt not to take him. His test are nothing like the teachings, but he is pretty reasonable. I failed all test and barely passed one. But still got a C because of labs, project, and extra credit.
I don't know why anyone would say this guy is hard. I am terrible in chemistry and came out with a B+. He gave out a lot, I mean A LOT of bonus points. All you have to do is go to class and anyone will do fine. I watched some people not attend and they didn't do well because the idiots missed the bonus points. Trust me take him and go to class.
Terrible teacher
Chemistry sucks initially so the class was hard to begin with. Professor Hurst is an awkward, goofy guy but a good teacher in general. He gives a lot of extra credit which helped because the tests are tough. The lab was really easy and we rarely stayed past an hour. I would recommend him, but a good bit of outside studying is required to do good.
He is very intimidating at first, but I made myself an ever present structure in his office asking questions on the online homework-the hardest part of the class. follow the study guides he gives before the tests, and study. the class itself isn't easy, but the labs are middle school level. ask for help, he will show preferation towards you
I might as well of not gone to class honestly. I could have read the text book and gained the same understanding. The only thing good is that he does these bonus points things and they can make a big difference in your grade. He is really easy if you study.
very hard. he is smart but can't relate information to students
He is a great teacher if you were to study the whole book. You need to put a lot of effort in order to get a good grade. Not a piece of cake.
Good teacher, but kinda hard. Outlines helped, but there were no study guides given.
Good teacher, but kinda hard. Outlines helped, but there were no study guides given.
His class consists of the usual powerpoint lectures. He goes through his slides very fast so you need to be a quick note taker. I made all Bs and Cs and even an F on the test and still came out with a B. There is usually a major project (mine was very easy just about elements). You get bonus points for going to class and for going to the SI clas
He is very precise and concise in his presentation and always available to students in helping them understand the course better.Slow to anger and very hardworking.
Pretty cool dude
He is very clear in his presentations, and he gives a study guide before all his tests. However, the material is very difficult and he is somewhat hard to get help from.
Good professor, really cares about students. Attendance not mandatory, but there is a lot of extra credit if you do attend. Tests aren't too hard, either.
Class starts out extremely easy, but gets harder as it progresses. Your work reflects your grade very well because tests only count as a small percentage. Lab reports, homework, a project, tests, and a final represent your grade. Overall not a difficult class.
Hopeless guy to seek help. No quizzes and tests are ridiculous. Can't survive w.o understanding EVERYTHING from the book. Study really hard, then u MAY get B.
He is not very helpful, but the class is not that bad. Test consist of multiple choice questions and math problems. You get to drop your lowest test and lab grade. The labs dont reflect what you learn in class. If you go to class and study, you should easiy get an A or B.
He is an interesting teacher in the fact that he knows how to get people's attention when everyone is lost. Take notes, read your book before class and after and always ask questions when you don't understand something. He tries his hardest to help when he can. I would recommend him for chemistry! He's a challenge but I learned a lot!
Overall, Hurst was a decent professor in the fact he curves and gives plenty of opportunites to get points besides tests. There is no attendance policy but going will benefit your grade because "clicker" problems add points. Always take notes and do homework and you should pull A or an B.
Write his notes and study them daily for a good grade!
tests are not as bad as they could be but the material is not explained well so you have to learn it on your own
Boring professor. Class wasn't really too difficult but he makes chemistry so uninteresting, it was difficult for me to study. Only works through math problems once or twice even though they make up a good portion of the tests. I never took notes and just studied the chapters in the book that cover the tests. I got a B.
He is the worst teacher that I have ever had! He doesnt clarify anything and his notes are not on the test! You will have to read for yourself and use your SI teacher to be successfull! I made a C and i never make that low in any class!DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!
Hard class and very time consuming if you have to teach yourself, do not go by his powerpoints but read directly from the book which explains everything clearer then he does. I had to pretty much teach myself the whole course to get an A. He acts like he does not want to help you at all even though he says he is always available
this man is rude. he teaches but sometimes will ignore you if you raise your hand... tests are not that bad; however, you may have to study material on your own to fully know what will be on the tests.
Do not take this class. FYE is supposed to be an east A and I made a C. And yes I am a straight A student and I did go to class everyday and do all the work. This teacher does not give A's. He is very rude and you will learn NOTHING in his class. I was very disappointed with him as a teacher.
Omg this was a horrible class. If you have him START READING THE BOOK NOW.What he goes over in class is almost never on the test.To be honest this is the first class I have ever had to teach myself.Usually I get high A in chem courses but I had to fight thru. blood, sweat and long hours(I don?t cry XP)to get an 88 which he calls an A by his grading.
horrible teacher, I hated him. he made it so hard for students to approach him for help. will never recommend ever
Overall good professor. Easy tests, lots of extra credit opportunity, easy labs. Attendance not mandatory but helps if you go. Ask for help on homework and any questions you have. Very easy project, easy to earn points in class and he curves grades a lot to help with final grades. Explains topics well in class, entertaining lectures.
Terrible
This guy is an ass and doesn't care if you know chemistry or not.
Hurst is a wonderful professor if you are good in science to begin with. He has helped me understand chemistry on a new level and makes me laugh at his kind of lame jokes. Hurst is a great guy. If you are good at chem, you will have 0 problem in his class. It's my easy A.
I would not recommend taking unless you are really good at Chemistry. He just reads off the slides and is no help if you go to his office. The tests are hard and he does not give any review as to what to study.
He was my favorite teacher i have taking so far. He is funny and makes it easy to understand the material. I recommend him!
Dr. Hurst takes questions at the beginning of every class. He does not have an attendance policy, but he does have in class questions that count towards your participation grade. There is homework. There are 4 exams a final and an assignment. The final was his hardest test because it is a department-wide final. Overall, I would recommend Dr. Hurst.
Hated this class. His lectures were sometimes boring and he sometimes speed through the notes. His final was super hard. His labs were super easy because a TA grades them, so she really doesn't care. Overall, if you are good in chemistry, take him. If not, PLEASE find someone else.
He does get kind of boring.. But he is very helpful when going to his office with questions.
Please, if you want that quality education everyone was talking about and you paid for dont chose him. I absolutely love chemistry and he made it a pain to go to his class. He chooses two students in the front of the class and teaches to them. If you ask a question he answers it so vaguely. I made an A cause I read the book alot.
Tragic Class... Just tragic
Dr. Hurst's lectures are kinda boring. He goes on and on a lot and it can be hard to stay awake. I would really only take him if you are a chem major or are really good at it.
HORRIBLE. LAZY. ANNOYING. Do not take him if you want to learn. I basically had to teach myself the whole course. He put in his syllabus that he drops a test, but that's a lie. The grading scale on his syllabus is also wrong, but he doesn't care to change it. I do not recommend him...Dr. Orvis is a good teacher though.
Dr. Hurst is an exceptional professor. His class may not be the most exciting but what do you expect? This is a college class, not a kindergarten class. His homework assignments and his tests reflect what he lectures. Just learn the formulas and do the homework/in class problems and you'll be fine. I never studied once and easily ended with an A.
If you took AP Chem, this will be the easiest class ever! He's really odd, but keeps things interesting. He doesn't put anything on the tests that he doesnt review beforehand. Overall, he's a fantastic teacher and I highly recommend him.
Overall, the experience was okay. I worked hard for my test grades but feel like he gives you plenty of extra material to earn a good grade. Go to SI, the labs and do your homework, you will be successful. He is a little quirky and doesn't really care whether you have a grasp of the material.
Class is boring but tests are not very hard. He is not very approachable and answers questions sarcastically. I took him over the summer and it was very fast paced.
The lectures are really boring as he just reads from a slide, and when you ask him a question he just does the problem the same way over and doesn't explain anything. His favorite thing to do is just do the problem as if we understand it already then says "And that's how you do it." He doesn't really give an overview over what the exams are on.
I just took this class(Summer, 2015) & I must say he's a great teacher. I was a bit scared going into the class because I've never really been good at Chemistry, but he broke everything down so easily it was hard not to understand. Since I did take it in the summer,we went through the material extremely fast so going to class everyday was important
He is very confusing. He doesn't really explain the material well. You will have to depend on an SI instructor or yourself to learn the material. Most of the time going to class is a waste. He uses mastering chemistry homework, which is a lot, but it is a lot better at teaching the material. He's laid back though, and he is very easy on grading.
This professor was not very helpful as far as explaining things clearly. If you don't understand him the first time don't even bother asking for clarity because he will simply do it the same exact way again and hope you get it that time. Most of the material I learned on my own through mastering chemistry and the book. Would not recommend.
literally the hardest course I have ever taken. also I suck at chemistry, but that's besides the point. his office hours conflicted with my schedule, what we talked about in class rarely matched the test, and after I failed the first two he finally announced to the class that we could have a cheat sheet. I'm just happy I passed.
Dr. Hurst is an 'okay' professor. He's not the friendliest person and comes off as rude most of the time. He lets you have a cheat sheet on an index card for every test. His grading method isn't very organized and the textbook isn't that useful. Overall, I wouldn't take him again.
Over all Hurst wasn't the worst professor I have had but he wasn't the best. He does give you a cheat sheet note card that you can use on your tests which are very helpful. He is not very approachable and is rude when you go to his office hours. Overall not the best class or teacher but probably the easiest Chem 1145.
He's an okay professor. His tests aren't the hardest and he gives you an index card to use as a cheat sheet on every test except the final. The class definitely isn't easy, and he can be very rude, but I don't think his rating should be that low. And I never even opened my textbook for his class, so there's probably no point in getting one.
Thought FYE would be an easy A but he expects you to write powerpoints on things we have never talked about. I thought it was cool that we only signed the attendance sheet and then left but it ended up hurting my grade because I had no idea what I was doing.
Professor Hurst gets a really bad reputation for some reason but his tests aren't that bad. He explains things well, and he gives partial credit on tests. He's a really nice guy. People complain about his class being hard, but college isn't easy so idk what to tell you.
Dr. Hurst is a great teacher; he not only tells you how to do a problem, but also WHY to do it. I withdrew from my first CHEM 1145 class two years ago. I took his 1145 class and made an A and specifically planned this semester around HIS 1146 class. His tests are the same questions he does in class. Chance for extra credit with labs and homework.
Hes good at what he does. I dont think he deserves the low rating he has. I didnt put much effort into his class and Im bad at chemistry. Yet I still managed to get a B. His class is hard to fail.
I get that chemistry is supposed to be a hard subject, but he made it impossible. He would show the class several /wrong/ ways to do a problem before showing the right way. They only people who weren't struggling had taken AP chem. in high school. I barely managed to make a B. DON'T TAKE HIM. Its not the material that's hard - its him.
Prof Hurst is super hard to approach and when u ask questions he will make you wish you hadnt. He Makes tests from textbook so some of the stuff I never remember talking about. He makes many grading mistakes. He marked problems wrong on the tests that werent wrong. He put my final grade in as a C when I got an A and I had to get a grade change.
Hes honestly not that bad. I took him summer term and his tests are straight forward. His lectures are kind of random but the powerpoints he uses are helpful. Go to class! He is very smart but sometimes doesn't know how to explain it to people who dont get chemistry. Check over his tests bc sometimes he makes grading errors. Kinda funny in a way
Terrible professor. Makes lots of grading errors on exams. Doesnt explain things well and is unapproachable. When we had our ACS final in the class, very little of the material on the exam had been taught to us in class. Surprised I managed a B in there
No help. I got an F on the first exam and came to his office hours & instead of actually helping he gave me a football analogy that this is just the "first game" and I got the rest of the season. When I went to go pick up my last exam before the final, I asked him why I got points off the math & he told me "the course is now over I cannot help you"
He was a pretty laid back with teaching with just slides and quick demonstrations. He did show interest in what he was teaching.
Funny guy but does not teach the material that well but just enough where you can pass the test. I would highly recommend finding someone that has taken his test before and getting there test. Test are identical ever year and that will make or break your grade
Avoid taking his class if you can. Im normally good at chem, but this class was impossible. He skips over slides and doesnt give straight forward answers to questions.
do not take this class id you don't want to take again. he can't teach and is rude. we skips slides and won't go back so he skips information that's on the test. you have to read the textbook word for word
Professor Hurst was not a bad professor. This was my 2nd time taking this course and i would recommend him 100X over my last professor. The main problem i had was he grades exams wrong, then says its fine because you "still made a good grade." I have lengthy email chains that he never responded to because he didn't want to take blame or fix it.
Sucks at teaching
Dont take this man. AVOID AT ALL COST!!
This mans awful do not take, prob almost any other chem Professor is better. Lectures he gets off track very easily and when we got moved online for covid he didnt even do zoom for our class.
Worst professor ever. Reads off of powerpoints and hardly teaches any of the material. Im having to read my textbook on my own to even attempt to make a good grade. He grades all 40 papers in one night when half the problems are math problems. Very rude. Would no recommend to anyone.
He reads off of the powerpoints and that's it. He is not good at communicating when you have a test. There is a lot of homework throughout the semester. The lab helps A LOT with the final grade so make sure you do those. You basically have to teach yourself.
Hurst is the worst! He is not confrontational and refuses to give you anything beyond the basic info. I am a high achieving student & I withdrew from the class which was the best decision ever because I wouldve finished with a failing grade. He is very hard to understand and does not teach. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS, YOU WILL REGRET IT!
Be prepared to be embarrassed when asking questions. He is very dismissive and seems annoyed when people come to him. If you get sick expect no guidance. He is a very quick grader and sometimes misses problems, but he typically does not adjust grades. His lectures are very brief, and it is rare that anyone makes A's on his tests.
Dont take
Worst professor that I have ever had. Please avoid him at all cost.
Horrible he dont care about students very nonchalant
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He is very rude and makes no sense in his lectures and will never try to help explain. He will also grade things wrong or give you no credit for something you did, but will not fix it. His class is VERY HARD
Passing his class for credit is nearly impossible. He does not like to answer any questions, but if he does the answers are very sarcastic and rude. In person was very uncomfortable and awkward. Never posted any grades in folio for lecture or lab. He also was not any help in lab, and sometimes slept while the TAs tried to help the students.
Don't take him!!! His lectures don't relate to the exams, and make no sense!
He's an ok professor, reads off the PowerPoint and writes on the board. Attendance is very mandatory you sign an attendance sheet every class. Labs aren't hard but he isn't much help for them, the TAs are your best bet. My advice is if you don't already have chemistry knowledge or remember your chemistry knowledge from HS, don't take him
What he teaches isn't on the test and he breezes through the powerpoints. Also doesn't ask questions during his lectures. He doesn't engaged with the class t make sure you understand just keeps teaching. Highly don't recommend especially if you need this class
Cant teach, can barley walk.
He is hard to understand when he talks. The online homework has problems he hasn't taught. He doesn't engage with the students to make sure we have it. He just breezes through the slides. He doesn't care for the students. I would not recommend him unless you are ready to teach yourself
If you have him drop the class immediately. Be ready to teach yourself everything. Tests and homework are so hard. He offers absolutely no help. Rude when you ask questions. Doesn't engage or care about students at all. Literally just mumbles and reads off his terrible power points.
He is very rude when asked questions and will make students feel dumb when they do ask. The homework he gives is about nothing he has taught. The lectures are very monotone and almost unbareable to sit through. The slides he "teaches" are not on the test and the tests are very hard considering half of it was not taught.
