Funny, interesting and a joy!!
He is truly a smart man. He was a little annoying at times, and the class can be hard if you aren't familar with music theory.
Dr. Naylor is an incredible instructor! He is very knowledgeable and able to convey that to his students. I will never listen to music in the same old way because he opened my ears to a whole new adventure. I recommend him to others often.
This class was a JOKE. Take it only if you wnat to be lectured about racism for 13 weeks. If you want a class on music appreciation, find another instructor. Why does WCC let this go on?
I came to learn about music, not to be lectured on the wonders of diversity. If you want to learn about music, don't take this class. Who lets this guy teach?
My feelings on his music theory class are mixed. On one hand, I learned a few new things and tackled a project for my exam grade that I shall remain proud of for years. On the other hand, found his class occasionally very confusing, his expectations complicated, and his approach overly simplistic.
Dr. Naylor is great! People don't like how he's not ashamed to talk about issues such as racism in his class, but I'm thankful that he'll do that. You'll learn much more than music; he helps you with skills you'll need for the rest of your life.
Off-topic, pretentious, confusing, and judgmental. If you are a musician he will try to find a way to make you feel ashamed and look ignorant. Could be a good class if you are not from the US: he claims to open doors, but in our class he just closed them with his negativity and pompousness. This man has a job for one reason: tenure.
Dr, Naylor helped me open my eyes and pursue my education [at Full Sail]. Also, I love it when he says the word "complex."
Very fun class. Enjoyed it a lot.
He is a very good teacher, he basis your grade on how much youve actually improved since showing up at his class. So if you dont know anything and learn something, you can keep up with the people that knew music since 2nd grade, because they will have to s
I hate the face he makes when he mocks people... and his book he wrote. damn.
Find a new teacher if you want to learn about music, he will only make you feel bad for what you don't know. I was really hopeing to get alot out of this class besides a loser teacher!
truth is indeed stranger than fiction...this pretentious, trifling schmuck has a doctorate! His book is ridiculous.Logical reasoners and learners who are out to expand your knowlege rather than cripple yourself with this rancidity, beware: youll learn nothing, i promise you. For an easy A,commend his travels and insight through you lying teeth.
He does not care about what the students thinks and is rude. I would not recommend taking him just to take the class.
Makes a person learn wierd kinds of music he is an allright proffessor. not hard

Naylor is very knowledgeable about the subjects in which he teaches. However, I'm not sure that that is enough of a reason to take his class. He is pretentious, belittling and judgmental. You really do need to kiss his a** if you want to stay on his good side. And trust me... that's easier said than done. Also, his ponytail is disgusting.
class material is not that simple, and there are too many things to read and listen to. However there are tons of extra credit, and also he gives grade pretty generously. It is pretty easy to get A in his class. He is fun teacher, too. obviously recommended
He is very judgemental and personally I think he just teaches what he believes. He was absolutly NOT clear on the final project but my group, before class, put in not even an hours worth of work into a powerpoint and we got an A. Although this class is very easy, I did NOT like the teacher because he was so stuck up!
In this class, there are several groups for different goals of the students.. If you are not taking Music Theory for the EMU elementary school, and you are not really familiar with musical structure (or a music instrument), then it will not be really easy to get the grade, A in this calss. Otherwise, this class is so helpful with a Smart Professor.
Michael Naylor was the second worst teacher I ever had at WCC (Gohering being the worst) He treated the students going into teaching like we were morons, and gave the musicans in the class more freedom. He insisted we sing aloud in class, and actually made three different students cry on three different occasions. I strongly advise against him.
He's... COMplex... Not a good teacher. I think I overheard John E. Lawrence saying he might not be working there much longer, but I could be wrong. Anyway, he has you do these stupid sonographs. Anyway, avoid him like the plague. He's really annoying.
He treats the elementary ed. students like complete idiots, which is kinda nice sometimes because they don't have to do as much as the other group. But, he makes you do stuff that you're not comfortable with, such as singing in front of the whole class a little kid song about colors. But, he's a good guy if you 1-on-1 with him.
Music appreciation class was boring and confusing. The class content rambled all over the place about cultures, bias, prejudices making it very difficult to understand what the point was. The textbook was more about the authors narcissistic views then music. Untimed, open book test and the class average was 19 out of 30, enough said.
Good instructor, course is kind of difficult--I'm not music major
Great class. All open book tests. He does get confusing at times so ask lots of questions.
Awesome professor
I am hearing all different comments about this guy. He is a very good person, understanding and helpful. His class can be fun and interesting, but he is very picky.Quizes are difficult and time consuming. 1 hour at the least. Textbook is more like an autobiography and its kinda messed up cuz if you miss a single class, he makes a big deal. annoying
He's a rude snob, he passes judgment on everyone in the class while learning nothing about them, and his text book was a dry, egotistical waste of money. Most of the music he tried to get us to appreciate was really cool, but he ruined the interesting bits with his nose-in-the-air attitude. I'm so glad he no longer the head of the music department.
Dr. Naylor is a little out there. His Music Appreciation class is more a diversity traning seminar, and it seemed like he was teaching the class his faith (Baha'i World Faith). Really put people on the spot, especially minorities. Textbook he wrote is a complete rip and you can't sell it back (apparently it's his policy). A little too arrogant.
This guy suy sucks so much... unless your willing to kiss his ass the whole semester, and buy into his dillusionally open-minded point of view, do not take his class. I know some people say they liked him, but thats just because they were brainwashed by his "revolutionary teaching style"
I agree with the previous post completely... he purposefully drives students to hate music. he is obstinately inflexible, and irrationally obtuse on anything disregarding his centralized teaching techniques... not to be mean, but he is obviously embittered by the fact that he was unable to make it in the music industry, mainstream or otherwise
I loved going to his classes. A very understandable human being. I liked everything about this class. The teachings are so much about reality and I loved it. I learnt to appreciate all kinds of music after going to Dr.Naylor's class. I had a very good time in his class. It was very interesting.
I loved this professor's teaching. He was a great man in appreciating other culture's music which made me proud to be in his class. If you have a problem please go to him he will do anything possible to help you out.
Took Mus Appr. with Naylor at WSU. 75% of grade was a big presentation at the end. Did mine on Finnish Culture and Music. He interrupted me 5 min into the 45 min. presentation and told me to get to the point. Ruined my whole presentation. Two people actually showed up from Finland to hear it. He totally ruined my semesters worth of work.
I'm REALLY glad this class is over. His textbook is inflated to the point of absurdity, he'll stress you out with the vaguest of expectations for projects, and puts minority students really on the spot. The one good thing about the class is the extra credit you can do which is fairly easy. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone I know.
If you want to learn music theory, take it with this guy. First day of class he separated the class into three groups, one for hobbyists and two for people planning to use Music as a career, and tailored the material to each group. Second week of class we had to write a song, but it's less than a minute long and done in a group, so it's not too bad
He is tough, self absorbed and comes off as bitter. However I took Theory 1 & 2 and he did make a musician out of me. Every mistake I made he was on me but in the end I needed that. If you wish to be a professional you need to get used to him.
lol it is very hard to speak of Naylor clean!!!I am a Black that is attending his class for Winter!!!enough said1!!!!
He dissects everything you say, he judges your opinions so much. He is so unclear about what he wants from the students and disrespects races by immitating accents. Hes the worst teacher ever. In all fairness though, its the easiest A you'll ever get.
He develops biases from the very beginning of the class, and it doesn't get much better from there. His lectures are scattered, and although he may be somewhat entertaining, if you don't have any previous knowledge of the subject you're taking, you'll be completely lost. I wouldn't recommend him to anybody.
His main goal for this class is to get you out of your comfort zone and thinking outside the box you've been raised in. He doesn't care about SOQs. He challenges students to do non-traditional classwork. A project about what you are most passionate about, group projects on other cultures, blog posts on an online forum and a creative group project!
Not helpful, talks about interesting biases but hes just very confusing about most of the stuff he says. Its a really easy A, you just have to stand a semester of his annoying and boring class.
His BOOK sucks--boring full of run on sentences&fragments--redundant. More philosophy than actual musical appreciation. Easy A. Quizzes r somewhat meticulous&come from the text. Again book is BORING--pretty sure material comes from his thesis. 3 absences ok...more than that and ur grade goes down. Kinda all over the place. Hippie.
Don't be disillusioned by reality, this is a very admirable instructor who has put his heart into his profession. He genuinely emphasizes with his students. he has his imperfections (as most instructors have) but he ultimately wants to challenge his students and sometimes it will make them uncomfortable. that doesn't mean he enjoys humiliating u.
Dude repeats himself alot - I see very strong polarities of opinion on this - And Id say you have to be a pretty enthusiastic person to enjoy this class, you will feel alienated if you're inherently shy. And be ready to cram work outside of class regardless of what he says, though he is lenient on grading if youre in group 1
Awful teacher......stay away from him. He is the worst teacher I have ever had. He taught me summer bridge and rambles about regimentation which is annoying. He claims to be multicultural but pretends to have knowledge he simply doesn't possess like in psychology and foreign studies. If you want a A say your a music major that'd do it but not scien

I went into this class expecting an easy A, and I ended up getting a B-, which is the worst grade I've received as a college student. This instructor was very boring, and thought that he was right about everything. My young cousin got into a car accident and died so I had to miss class, and this instructor told me I need to "watch my attendance."
Mean, rude, and terrible at explaining things. He'll answer everything BUT what you asked. I would never recommend him.
He is an awful professor, do not take voice class with him he thinks he knows about it but he doesn't, rude/un-helpful, and steals classes from other performing arts department professors, because of seniority
This guy is a wreck. I just needed to fulfill an art credit, and thought music appreciation would be interesting and fun. WRONG. He wrote the book himself and it's very hard to read. Instructions are wordy and confusing. He'll send you a 5 paragraph email about an assignment and you still won't know what you're doing. His class was truly awful.
Dr. Naylor is amazing
Lectures are long. The readings are usually boringridiculously long. He will often send out emails or instructions that are in no way clear and leave you feeling very confused. He also uses quotation marks around things that don't need them, which factors into his instructions being confusing and is extremely annoying.
Fun, interesting . Different approach to listening and enjoying music.
I took this class for my humanities credit, and I didn't really read the description. Music Appreciation was actually all about different cultures, not really music. All the assignments were easy, but there were a lot of simple projects you had to present. He wasn't very clear with due dates. But as long as you look like you're trying you get an A.
Dr. Naylor is one of the most genuine, insightful, and caring teachers I have ever had. He's passionate about what he teaches and cares deeply about students - so deeply that he avoids sugarcoating his feedback/advice because he understands this is in their your best interest. If you can let go your ego's protective shell he can change your life.
Mr. Naylor is not interested in teaching students how to read music. I took Theory I and I expected him to teach me how to read music. He divided the class in groups and he did not assist me with homework or questions. If you don't know how to read music do not take his classes he does not have the patience and humility to teach beginners.
Professor Naylor took me out of my comfort zone and helped me face challenges I was facing outside of class. He cares about his students and is eager to help you toward wherever you're going for.
by far the WORST teacher ever at Washtenaw. MAKES GROUP PROJECTS A NIGHTMARE. Do not take any classes with Naylor, he is so unclear and doesn't know what's due when. Very scatter brained
Dr. Naylors content for the class was ok but he wanted to be "deep" and ended up insulting a few of my classmates. His quiz and Immersion Papers were outlined and gave good instruction. Everything else was a mystery. He wanted us to be "free form" for our final but directions came out confusing. The "Bridge" has a few obstacles but is crossable.
I enjoyed this class with Naylor. Alternates between a quiz and discussion board each week & a project at the end of the semester. Lengthy chapters but the assignments were never too much, it was the perfect amount of work for an online course. Grades/answers emails quickly. Not an easy A but worth the time to get one. I recommend!!
Dr. Naylor is an incredibly compassionate and rational human being, the qualities of an A+ professor are demonstrated by himself on a daily basis. He is incredibly intelligent and well versed in his field. The time he takes to respond and give feedback to students is UNPARALLELED. He responds to emails, even well after hours, nearly INSTANTLY.
Hands down the best online professor I have ever dealt with. He's kind and considerate, always posts grades and deadlines in a timely manner. I took his online class for MUS 180 and I learned a lot that I can apply to my everyday life. The tests are a breeze if you read the material and use retakes to your advantage. Take this class!
I really enjoyed Dr. Naylor's class. If you aren't passionate about music, don't take his classes. He will roast you if you're not putting in effort. This class provides a very solid base for music theory, but you have to be willing to put in time practicing with a piano outside of class.
Probably the most woke prof I've had in a year. 180 is not a music class per se. Blend a mindfulness class with English composition, multiculturalism, world music: and there you have it. His class was the closest to Indigenous studies I'll get at WCC (chap. 3). Save $16 by purchasing course packet direct from publisher. Extra cred was edutaining!
Dr. Naylor was awesome! I was constantly worried I was in over my head but he made sure to answer ALL my questions - help me understand and made it possible for me to not just pass but to learn more about music and enjoy the class! His love/passion of music is contagious!!
Naylor's online class for music appreciation is a tad silly to say the least. He makes you buy HIS books that HE wrote and digitally distributed. All while watching them I was amazed how archaic they looked. Really poor recording quality. Plus it REALLY feels like he is injecting his opinions in his lessons. He has some good qualities... some..
I took this class because I really wanted to learn music theory. I learn vocabulary for theory but still have a very basic understanding of actual music theory. He is not a good music theory teacher and really should not be teaching this course. He sounds like he knows what he is going but he doesnt. I learned more from music students at EMU.
Waste the majority of class time talking about motivation and time management. Then, will complain about students looking bored and also complain about the lack of time to teach the actual material. Very negative to nonmusic majors and tells them to drop the class, even though this is a 100 level class and an art credit. Comes off as very elitist.
The only reason someone would rate this professor poorly... is because he cares more about us building lives that matter and challenges us. I couldn't be more grateful especially in COVID to have a teacher like this...
I'm amazed as I read some of these... this is the only teacher I've ever heard of that creates tracks for students based on their interests, waive or allows for students to build assignments based on interests, and gears everything to our building lives we like. What is up with these folks? This is the type of teacher we've all been waiting for.
I can't believe with the world in complete lock-down-- I was able to take a class that both let me get into music... and explain just about all the problems and point out solutions -- I can use for my profession in science. This was the best surprise class I've ever had.
One of our classmates went on and found that Dr. Naylor's name is misspelled here -- that his ratings include classes he doesn't teach... and that he is viewed as anything but caring, concerned and knowledgable-- If you want an accurate view of the world and what is going on---and you love music... take this class... if not, why did you sign up?
I'm about ready to finish the only class I've taken that treats all the world's cultures and music as equal, values everyone regardless of race or background-- and allows us to connect the ideas to our lives. This is really the class if you have a desire to understand the world. But it makes you show up, think-and doesn't spell out everything.
The only reason I didn't give a 5 is because of life -- and the challenges having a class that makes you be creative, think about options, and explore your own connection to education, music, and other cultures... while doing the pandemic stuff. Anyway... great class.
This is the first class I've ever taken that made learning entirely about ME... why am I in the class, what do I want to learn and how do you do it? If you really want to learn as an adult--take this class. If you just want to to fill prescriptions--take something else. LOL
He is pretentious and self Indulged. He would like to think of himself as inclusive and favoring diversity but If he does not like your views and opinions he will shut you down. He writes his own text books which he requires for his class. Far left effeminate types would love this guy everyone else should stay away.
This professor gives so much work for a 12-week semester. I would not recommend this class at all.
Way too easygoing, and not in a good way. He set a precedent at the semester's beginning that allowed the class to walk all over him with less than half the class even bothering to show up the majority of the time. Late work is also accepted whenever, which sounds good until you realize there's no incentive to engage with the material.
Professor Naylor is overall one of my favorite teachers at WCC. His teaching style is created to be solely focused on you and what you are able to do. He was kind enough to recommend an orchestra for me to join, as WCC doesn't have one, and I can't thank him enough for it. He is incredibly attentive when you need it, as long as you ask.
I took Voice 2 with Dr. Naylor, and while I enjoyed it due to my already having a grasp of music theory and performance, I did observe many people in my class struggling with the ability to read music. While we did end up putting on a very successful concert, I think it would have been better if we worked more on the actual reading of music.
Taking Music Appreciation with Dr. Naylor was incredibly eye-opening. I am a classical musician, and I tend to deal with the biases that come with it; fully exploring those and other biases through music and culture was insightful and interesting. When I was having trouble at home he came to me directly and applauded my strength. He is a gem.
Makes you buy his own textbook, red flag #1, and in that textbook he teaches the most confusing way of reading rhythm that I've ever encountered. Not only is that method not used literally anywhere in the world or in any professional setting, it is also harder than just learning how to read rhythm on a staff! Don't waste your time.
