hard but fair
he is ok but that egg question was very hard!!!!
easy to understand, and makes class funny.
Ok for teaching and clarity but poor grammer on tests. very unfair tests.
Not as nice as he seems as a lecturer. Rather officious.
Funny guy (rude too), hates his brother in law. If you take it in the summer, remember to do OLD EXAMS. All the questions are from there word for word
Great prof! Very interested in the topics and made me interested too. I am going to try to take other courses from him.
He is a great prof and friendly guy.
funny guy, great course. easy to take notes in my opinion.
Excellent in my opinion. Passionate about the subject. He's very clear, humerous. Really knows his stuff. You get the sense he really loves what he does ... and it shows!
i enjoyed his class! he's funny and nice. the course was presented in a very clear and organized manner. there was no required text for this course, but i felt like i learned way so much than other courses where i had to buy a bunch of textbooks!

Very helpful as long as you ask.
great prof. i want to marry him. he is very enthusiatic and i ended up with a good mark. lame sense of humor but one of the best profs ive had.
Charming, smart and funny! Reminds me of my Dad! I really enjoyed learning from him and hope to take more classes from him in the future.
was supposed to be in every lab, I saw him maybe once! Some of his videos werent very helpful either, he'd often make mistakes. And if you hold your microscope the way he holds his in the first video, you'll get yelled at!!!!
A perfect science class for arts students - very fun lecturer, content not too hard-core. Tests are occasionally weird, make sure you memorize important numbers. Paper is really straightforward, marked easy. Highly recommended. No text, so get the notes if you sleep as much as I did (oops, not because it was boring).
Had him for summer session: An overall good prof. Likes one-liner jokes, & will tell lots of them while he waits for you to finish copying the overhead notes he spoonfeeds you with. It's great. Lab videos are boring, and were filmed several years ago: if you watch closely, you'll notice he wears a wedding band in them, but he doesn't in person.
he's really cute, but sucks as a prof :( I found him to be really rude when asking a question about the course, he told me to go review my notes/ the text book when what i needed was for someone to explain things in different words. Tests very hard, videos very boring, labs pointless.
Great class!

fine unless you need to ask him something one on one. if you do, get ready to be spoken to in the absolute rudest way possible and in the way most likely to make you feel like a complete idiot.
Labs can get long and painful. The key to success is the WEB SITE! revew the website take notes and treat it like a textbook. Also do the end of class reveiw questions, study old exams, test questions alot of the times dont change and if they do they always cover the same material. talked w/him, some what helpful, has 1500 students so cut him slak
This guy is probably the funniest professor ever. Great class for Arts students to take, no textbook, and an easy term paper to write. Very interesting material, and I thoroughly enjoyed every lecture with his humour and fascinating subjects. Most of the material on tests are common sense, and you don't have to worry about studying your butt off.
"This kidney bean-shaped organ is a, uh...kidney" "This strucutre looks like, uh, actually I don't know what they look like..." Haha...Pretty nice guy. However, the lab portion of the exam isn't that fun. *Sigh* I'd rather have lab reports than a lab section on the exam.
Good sense of humour. Clear, interesting lectures. Everything made sense.
Excellent Prof! The class is great if you are an Arts student who needs a science credit, or a science student that needs an elective.
Clear instructions, easy to understand, good at keeping focus on material, material is organized. No trick questions, all answers are in lecture material, very entertaining! Good Professor!
He is very funny! The course content is interesting and I was happy to find out there was no boring text. Actually want to attend this class. Haven't fallen asleep once. There are a lot of notes but tests are fairly easy.
Great class for any student who has to take science credits (i.e. arts students). The class is super easy, 2 term tests are worth 40% of final grade and 1 term paper worth 15% of final grade, and 1 final worth 45%. Dr. Shaw is really funny and I never hesitated going to any of his environment classes.
Professor not too creative in presenting course material.
Yes he's funny. Yes his classes are easy if you pay attention. And yes, when you do need something, he really doesn't seem to care. Oh well, you can't have it all. Don't bother asking him questions outside class and you'll think he's the man.
The Brent Butt of professors, this guy is hilarious. I think he's from out east but with his demeanor you'd swear he was from rural Saskatchewan. Easy going, could care less about "paper format" - which is refreshing in a sea of pretentious morons. Class was interesting and informative: highly recomended!
This class really made me a lot more concerned, educated and interested in the environment and the problems we and future generations will and are facing. Prof very clear in lectures. Information interesting and relevant. Occasionally I dosed off but this is a great prof and class for a non sciency student who needs a science credit, like me!
He is overall a good guy. His class is super easy! I recommend it to anyone who wants to boost their GPA. And its a pretty interesting class, you have to attened the lectures because he doesnt really write anything down he just talks all class.
Great guy and an amazing in class prof! He keeps students thouroughly engaged; always cracking jokes and making the material he is talking about relavent to students. No textbook so need t be in class to take notes for test. Sometimes throws curveballs. Hard to find outside of class and if you do, he is not overly helpful. But still a great class!
Dr. Shaw is very rude, beware. Impossible to find him in his office. Not approachable. Avoid taking video lectures (day lectures), you'll find the lecture hall is too loud, people chatting and talking, and hardly you'll hear anything from the lecture.
Avoid this guy........if he is nice to you once, it probably means he is waiting for the revision period to end and then you get a kick in the back. These people employed by the u of m shouldn't be there, there are farther more energetic and nicer professors out there who would gladly take this position. Michael go home.
i find him to be very interested in his work and interested in student's success. He can be a bit unapproachable but is a good prof overall. I enjoyed his video lectures much more than Dr. Stacey's and actually realized that time went by faster when Michael Shaw was lecturing
not a bad prof. doesn't post his slides and moves fast so I took pics in the lecture to make sure I didn't miss anything. I found stacey's lectures harder but questions easier. his exam q's were fairly tough and some were confusing. overall good though, just need to read the textbook to clarify ideas.
He knows his stuff but he does not really seem to transmit his knowledge to the students. Goes thru slides pretty fastly, exam questions are hard but he is fair and recognizes when he makes a mistake. Joy Stacey is better than him!!!
Mr. Shaw is a good teacher. His lectures are kind of annoying because he tries to teach students how to take notes by not posting notes online. All this does is make students take more time watching lectures as I did in the library making my own powerpoints. His class material is easy, little textbook reviewing is required.
He goes through the lectures really fast. At first it was impossible to keep up. But the content of his lectures are easy; they're pretty much a review of grade 12 bio. However, I found his fast pace to be helpful, it definitely made me faster at writing notes.
Good prof but has a horrible attitude towards helping students. Video lectures were very fast paced as well.
First of all, he doesn't say what his grading scheme is (this is really irritating). Secondly, he is really rude in class at times and makes you feel stupid for asking questions. I aced the first midterm, but didn't do so well on the second. The problem was that he doesn't give notes, you have to make your own notes when is is talking.
highly over-rated
Good teacher, but made a lot of sarcastic comments. He made the course interesting because he made a lot of jokes and he also knew what he was talking about. I learned a lot that I never knew before and it was never boring. A bit rude sometimes, but all in all a good prof. Also, the tests were pretty hard.
He goes way to fast in video lectures and often makes mistakes.
His lectures are clear but it's a bit hard to keep up with the notes, he goes a bit fast. I always had to rent out the videos from the library haha! I also found it hard to contact him, he doesn't have set office hours.
Thought he was good at informing us what we need to know for the exam.
I liked him. it was an easy class but interesting. He was pretty funny.
Extremely captivating and easy to listen to. Also very funny. He gave very clear notes and explanations and the tests were fair and reflective of the subject matter. The only warning I have is that he doesn't post notes, which you take every class, so you either have to be careful about how many you miss or have a friend for back-up.
He makes complicated things sound more simple but he goes way too fast in lecture. We have to take notes on everything written on the screen plus what he's saying. Its hard to get down what's on the screen even if typing, let alone what he says too.. Do yourself a favor and rent all the lectures from the library instead of going to class.
Helpful in lab and funny. I found his lectures very quick, but was able to keep up. He made it clear he was always willing to help us with problems.
Borrow DVD lectures from library so that you can pause and rewind. In the lectures he seems like a nice and cool guy. However, in reality, I did not get that same vibe about him, he appeared to be rude, uncaring and self-centered. Luckily, you only see him once in a while in lab days. Oh well, exams were lecture based, so personality didn't matter
Explains notes extremely well and goes over important concepts in great detail. Moves a bit fast in lectures though so get the DVDs from the library and you're golden!
Very good prof. Tries to add humour in his lectures and exams! Explains things very clear and precise. He does go fast during the video lectures if you attend a section. But if you watch it within the 2-hour borrow period in the library and move at your own pace he explains it all very well.
Very difficult to get all material because he doesn't post any notes. He just talks all class. I found the tests to be kind of hard. There were quite a few questions that were never explained in class. Funny guy. Made lectures interesting.
Good proff. Knows his stuff, but doesn't have powerpoint slides like Dr. Stacey did. Seems helpful, encourages students to see him if theyre having trouble. However, his portions of the exams are tricky. His wording of questions tricks you, I'd say he loves to use the "weeding students out method" on the exams, so study hard and know your concepts.
Excellent guy all around, his lectures are well organized explains things in great detail emphasizes and repeats along simplifies concepts students would typically find difficult. He tells you exactly what you should study what will be on the exam he says to circle it in his lectures. With having that said very respectful prof.
He is an awesome lecturer, you will not get bored in his classes! His explanations are super clear and he is willing to repeat if something is not fully understood. His marking is fair but hard. He is willing to review his marking if you ask for it but you will need a strong argument for him to change the mark. Overall highly recommended!!
The course is ok but don't expect any help... he can be rude. He has his favorites and depending on the day, may be nice or not so nice. Going to office for help is a waste of time. He just points you back to the book.
Much clearer in the video lectures than joy Stacey is. Explains concepts in many different ways which is extremely helpful. Also moves a bit slower than Stacey did, so it's easier to grasp the information
Easy to get the grade, but hes extremely rude, is not really any help and will always say figure it out.
Bring your phone or something to take pictures of the slides in class with. He rushes through the lectures quite quickly.
Good prof, talks quickly and goes through information fast. BIOL 1340 didn't have a textbook so class notes were all you had to study for midterms and final. He did show An Inconvenient Truth for two classes though which was slightly disappointing for university. Still would recommend.
He's an easy prof but just super rude and abrupt outside of class. He seems like he's very annoyed with students. Good notes though. If you know what you're doing, his questions are very easy.
Mike Shaw's portion of the course is super straight forwards. His notes are clear and his examples are easy to follow. He's also a pretty funny guy. However his exam questions can be a little tricky.
I thoroughly enjoyed this course, but I do love Biology. Only downside to this course was that we did not hear from the professor during the course.
Overall he's a funny guy who makes lectures interesting and his notes are straightforward. A lot of notes, unnecessary numbers and no textbook for reference. The problem is he isn't helpful and he doesn't stress what is going to be tested which makes exams difficult.
Amazing Class. Learned a lot of really relevant information. Engaging Lectures on interesting subject matter.
He's a wonderful teacher he is welling to help , he has a clear way on teaching , not so many assignments during the semester , HW once every week could be twice sometimes , exams aren't so bad the first exam usually the easiest , second exam is the toughest final isn't bad ,attendance is not taken but it's recommended to attend don't buy the book
Awesome prof. Easiest class of my life
He's a great prof and had very entertaining lectures. He made this very interesting class become even more awesome than it would have been. There are NO notes given out or online, so you do need to go to class unless you have a friend that you can switch off days with. The course is simple!
Has interesting, fast-paced video lectures. They definitely keep you awake and alert the entire lecture time. To succeed in bio1020, make sure to read the textbook at least once a week and understand the concepts. Before all exams, do as many practice questions as possible. exams are not easy peasy. Labs are fun, at least my lab TA was great.
Extremely bad prof. His portion of the video lectures were insanely confusing. He went super fast and never left the slides up long enough to take notes since he did not provide any. Also, he is very rude when you go to him for help and laughs at you for not understanding the material
I took his distance ed BIOL1010. I recommend avoiding this at all costs. He gives little to no guidance and expects you to pull the most important information out of the textbook. Assignments are also next to impossible due to the lack in guidance. Can take weeks for him to reply to your email.
The course was split between him and another prof, and his half was by far better. His notes were organized and he explained really well, using strong analogies and diagrams to help. His lectures didn't drag on, and it wasn't too hard to keep pace with him. His portion of the exam seemed easier and arguably more fair, he'd tell you what to expect.
This prof is probably one of the most condescending and terrible people who I have met in my life. His lectures are easy, but he will not be specific when answering questions and is insanely rude when you go and meet up with him. He teaches the cell division section of bio1020, I will not miss this prof when his cells quit dividing.
Taking spring session course. Wasn't really interested in the topic going in, but he's funny enough to capture my attention. Gratefully, not some huge tree hugger. Took BIOL 1000 with him distance and it was boring, textbook only readings. In class lectures are the exact opposite even during these 2 hr. spring lecture slot times.
Micheal makes lectures funny and is easy to listen too. He doesn't post any notes, I recommend taking pictures of the slides to copy later or re-watching the lecture to understand what he's explaining. The material is not difficult if you have taken a high school biology, the exams were based on material in class but never hurts to read the text.
I took his distance course and it is by far the worst class Ive ever taken. He gives no guidance and you are expected to memorize like half the text book. Assignment questions are very vague
I took the distance education class with him and highly wouldn't recommend it. The assignments were easy but this professor will expect you to know which stuff is "Important". Almost everyone fails the final exam because you have no guidance what so ever and have to make your own notes based on the textbook.
Course was great. Lots of time for the assignments and good feed back. If you need your hand held take one of the other sections.. if you are a grown up who works on your own you will be fine.
difficult
I took his online bio1000 course and hadnt heard from him once in the whole course, no lectures just read the textbook without any guidance. Quizzes werent terribly hard neither were the assignments but holy talk about a never there for you prof. Wouldnt take ever again, pick another bio class.
I hated him! Tests material he has never covered in class, doesnt post the notes so be attentive in lectures and WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN. I only got through it because it was online and group chat was very helpful. I would not recommend taking this class, another elective would be much easier. The topics however are interesting and I did learn
Not sure where all the bad reviews came from as I've had him for a few classes now and overall good prof! He makes everything easy to understand and is hilarious. Only downside I had was having a hard time getting ahold of him outside of class as he rarely responds to emails.
didnt recieve one single class or explanation of the textbook content from him.If you take this class to learn, just buy the textbook and it would be the same. No effort and didnt reply to emails. his assignments, even if you give all the info he takes marks off for nothing. Final exam is not easy at all considering he gives no class or explanaiton
He is not a good prof. He needs to improve how he teaches. I went for my final exam and he did not even finish grading my assignments which were 25% each. He never posted any videos or lectures, you will learn everything from reading. Did not even see his face or hear his voice before going in for the final exam.
Took the distance Bio 1000 course, it's basically a self-taught course with the textbook, but it was relatively easy to get an A+. I would take a course with him again.
