Worst prof I have ever had at this school! B-E-W-A-R-E do want to be yelled at and scared sh*tless? then take his class today!!!
He is the worst prof I have ever had. He is a narcisist who is obsessed with his "wonderful job". He answers his cell phone in class, swears constantly, yells at people 4 discussing info that he doesn't leave up long enuf. He also has a bunch of stab marks on his neck..this probably indicates that he was attacked by a client 4 being such a dick!
I have to say, he really isn't so bad. Yeah, the class is little hard, but it's not impossible. And the guy is pretty funny. It's not scary, just don't take the comments too seriously if they bug you that much.
That person has NO CLUE what they are talking about..he's awful!! I agree 100% with the other 2 comments..he is an ass & really stuck up..I hope that no one else has to be put through his****ty class..especially since his exam was really hard & since he lied about the format of it and what was on it, trust the 3 of us, not the other crackhead!!!
Doiron is no where as bad as others make him out to be. If you listen in class, do your readings - you'll finish with a good mark. 20% for showing up, and the essay was marked extremely easy, I finished with an A+. I suspect the negative comments come from the kids in class who didn't know how to shut up and thought they knew everything.
doesn't teach... more like bigotted talk about personal encounters
Good lectures, makes classes fun
Well I think everyone is entitled to their own opinion...there is no need for name calling...and I would have to agree with the positive comments...Prof Doiron is a good prof and his classes are very interesting! If you attend class, read the readings, and work hard...you should end up with a good grade.
I thought that he was a very fair professor... In order to do well in this class you definitely have to attend all the lectures and do all of the readings as his exams are very specific. He is an easy marker, and he also makes class very interesting. He shares a lot of personal stories in order to make the concepts easier to understand.
Are expected to know small, seemingly unimportant, details for the exam. Good story teller. Second half of class material is 100x better than first.
Not too bad of a teacher. He manages to make a boring subject interesting. His exams are pretty hard so make sure you do all the readings required!
Excellent prof! Always available for extra help when needed. Very clear expectations, and good teaching style. Kept class interesting.
Doiron, is an amazing prof. He interests me in many other ways professors need to learn about how to do. However, his classes are not very easy and you should not go in ever thinking it will be a breeze. He is hard, and asks questions that sometimes he should aka DATES!
Doiron is a great person, but his teaching skills are not very helpful. His tests are hard (even though he claims they are easy) and he gives his classes quizzes as if we're six years old again. Interesting man, funny prof, but DO NOT take any class with him if you want a good mark...
Funny guy,but not a very good professor, gives ridiculous random quizzes where you often need to know the most trivial of details, would not recommend this guy,you can come to class,do the readings and it guarantees you nothing with him,his exams are quite hard as well
Well isnt that obvious that Doiron just typed that below! He's not nice - he's rarely prepared - he gives out quizzes to make sure that people come to his class - (which they never do) - if you have a friday class with him or a class at a bad time thats when hell give them out - hes balding pretty bad - and hes got fake armani glasses
FUNNIEST MAN ALIVE
He's a good prof. He keeps class interesting and as long as you study the content taught and do the readings, it's not impossible to get a good mark. Im enjoying his class this semester. He makes a 3 hour lecture not too painful to get through.
Very fun/interesting prof. LOts of class discussion, makes the 3 hours go by fast. HIs pop quizzes can be annoying because their very specific... so remember dates and little details from hiz movies and lectures...he relies 99% on the text book..so know it inside out...pretty hard marker...overall fun class..just come to class and do readings
Holy crap. It is extremely difficult to get great marks in this course. He thinks that a 75 is a great mark. Multiple choice questions can be very tricky and are worth 2% each. EVERYTHING is from the text - know it inside and out. Nice guy, but he seems too aggressive for my liking.
Notoriously foul mouth - Needs to realize he is offending a lot of people by what he says. Pretty boring although thinks he is witty which isn't true. Marks are easy to get, although quizzes are redundant as they test you on useless facts. Really makes a three hour lecture drag on.
Good Professor. Easy to get good marks in the class if you read the textbook, and highlight important information. His pop quizzes are an easy way to get a solid 18-20% of your grade, just remember important info mentioned in class. Funny guy, and definitely made 3 hour lectures fly by :).
my favourite prof! I keep taking his classes cause I love his teaching style & how he can actually keep my attention in a 3 hour lecture. shows lots of videos to change things up & his super easy pop-quizzes are just free points as long as you've been listening. plus its nice leaving a lecture knowing that you just made 5% on simple 1-word answers.
I've taken 3 classes with him because he is clear in his expectations and lectures are somewhat interesting with practical examples. He believes in what he teaches and has very much experience that can be tapped... Likes upper-year students/keeners!
Anyone who complains about the quizzes being redundant doesn't get the point, the quiz is just to make sure you go to class. It easy marks for showing up. It is all about the text, swears a lot but unless you are overly sensitive you shouldn't be offended. If you can't handle his bad words you are in the wrong field, criminals use bad words too.
Overall acceptable class. Pretty much uses the power points that came with the textbook so all of the info that you need is in the textbook. He makes attendance mandatory though by giving random easy quizes throughout the semester. You can tell he's a criminologist though because he is obsessed with barking out orders. Overall he is a good lecturer
worst professor ever. Never take this class, puts things on the final he doesn't even teach. Puts irrelevant things on the exam. Very unhelpful and is narcissistic. I got a good grade in the class and I still think he is a terrible prof.
Love Doiron! Took all of his classes. Hated him for community intervention but really got to see how helpful he is in Individial Intervention. Amazing with smaller class sizes, very helpful and clear with expectations. Wish he taught more courses for OttawaU crim!
I've had this prof for a couple of classes. He is a GREAT prof. He is very knowledgeable - if you are willing to put the effort in he is willing to do whatever it takes to help you succeed - seriously great prof! I would take additional courses in a second if there were additional courses offered.
Absolutely terrible professor. Got a good grade, but he always skip classes, give out exam questions that are irrelevant and very narcissistic in person. He is very uncritical about the justice system. Just memorize everything in his class and you are fine.
Love this guy. Had a few different classes with him. He is very clear about his expectations. For those that said he put stuff on his exams he didn't teach, they obviously didn't go to class. If you pay attention, go to class, there is no reason why you can't get a great grade. As you get in to upper years he gets more challenging.
Completely useless lectures,I took this class with the expectation of learning the history of criminology but instead informed on every aspect of running a post office. Often went into to current criminology completely ignoring the slides, than quickly reading through the slides t the end of class because he ran out of time.
Nice prof and seems very eager to help out students. Spends at LEAST 20mins at the beginning of the class to complain abt low attendance. And then he reads the powerpoint and doesn't add on. I would've skipped class if it weren't for the quizzes with are basically free points!
Very good prof. Clear expectations, clear lectures, very willing to help a student succeed if they show interest. He ties theory into practice well, and does not have very difficult exams. Random quizzes are easy marks that get people to attend class. I would take classes with him again in a heartbeat.
GOOD teacher !! Very interesting !! !! easy Quiz hihi
Very rude and arrogant. He always goes off-subject to discuss of his current and past professions. Exams had a lot of content that was only elaborated in the readings which were extremely boring. I would not recommend this teacher.
Doiron is certainly a character. He is funny at times with rude undertones, but will keep you entertained. If you want to succeed in his class, go visit him during office hours and ask him questions.
Great lecturer, very interesting material and very enthusiastic about what he's teaching. However, he's not very approachable or polite. I asked him for help with some questions I noticed while studying and he made me feel terrible about myself before walking into his midterm. Easy class, but he tests you on statistics and things you wouldnt expect
He's a good prof. He is funny and mostly interesting even though he sometimes gets lost in rain of thought. His exams are tough if you are not good at memorizing stats and dates but once you know what to expect his exams get easier. There are quizzes at random times and are usually on really specific stuff but usually boosts up the class average.
Not a bad prof, show up and take east quizs for 20%. Hard ass on the paper, but I should have followed instructions better to Not cumulative. He is a little self absorbed, rambles about himself, tells same story 2-3 times throughout course. Intresting guest speaker Participate and go see him in office hrs for best results. Go to class or fail
Very straightforward, funny and interesting. Everyone seemed to like the text for this class; however, I didn't like it at all. Took this course in summer and was pretty intense, but from the notes and his explanations I managed to do pretty well even if the text was not my favourite. I would take him again. Quizzes in class are a mark booster.
Michel is one of the best professors of Criminology at the University of Ottawa. He is very knowledgable, funny and passionate about what he teaches. If you want to succeed in his class, just do the readings, take good notes and ask questions. The prof is just simple amazing!
AWESOME PROFESSOR
He means well, but literally the most teacher ever. He post long slides every week and will quiz you on the most useless material. He struggles to finish 10 slides in 3 hours and overall talks to much about himself and his experiences.. which are pointless. Overall not a good teacher and expects you to know to much stuff. Do not do it!
I took this class in my fourth year because I forgot to take it in second year, and I've honestly never been so frustrated in a course before. He never once was able to finish a lesson because he just rambles on about stuff that has nothing to do with the class. He is 100% conservative and has no problem letting everyone know.
Prof Doiron was one of my least favourite profs at uOttawa. He loves to tell personal anecdotes in class that barely relate to class material. His slides, which he posts online, are extremely long and heavy. Midterm is easy, but the final has most of the class material on it, so memorize lists! Gives pop quizzes in some classes so you need to go.
I actually thought he was a great prof. One of the most engaging. VERY helpful. If you want to do well, he gives you every opportunity. Great prof. I have taken multiple courses with him.
He is an amazing prof! If you are devoted to your work and do the readings you will love his class. He does have pop quizzes but they can really help your average ! I would definitely recommend his class:)
He's off topic. Talks about everything and nothing. When he teaches, he reads his powerpoint for 3hours straight. everything he says is on the test. There is no revision. He is not very accessible outside of the class. Boring. Very. Boring.
Pire prof de criminologie.
Not the best teacher. He tends to read from his PowerPoints without explaining. He assigns lots of readings to do outside of class. He also has pop quizzes, so dont miss class. I found that some of the questions on exams were very specific (like stats from certain years). Seems to care about students, but the class requires lots of effort.
This prof talks about content not related to the class for most of the lecture and then quickly rushes through important Powerpoint slides at the end. He reads off of the Powerpoint without explaining what he is saying. The assigned readings are very long and heavy. Lots of dates and stats in exams. Not polite and pompous. Avoid if possible.
Engaging lectures. HOWEVER, his exams, pop quizzes and finals are all on statistics that have no weight or value to the class. Legit one of his questions was: how many people were released from THIS prison on THIS day, for THIS crime. The answer to these questions is embedded in one of the very many readings he assigns.
For the first 45mins of the 3hr lecture, he talks about the most pointless and random things, repeats useless info over and over. He literally takes so much time to actually start teaching the class, so if you show up half an hour late, you won't miss a thing. This class has so much potential to be interesting but he literally ruined it all.
I had this prof for CRM1701 and CRM2700 and both terrible experiences. Get ready to memorize very specific details of readings, videos, lectures, you name it. For example, on the final he made a multiple choice asking the specific day a girl died in a video we had watched 4 weeks before the exam... and he uses Respondus for online, just a warning..
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF! His exams questions focus on details that are wayyyyyy to specific to the point that, in my opinion, many of his exam questions do not even reflect the overall understanding of the student. It is super hard to get a good grade in this class. I am a good student and I usually find school easy but not this class!
IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR RATHER THAN HIM DO IT. I had him last year in 1700 and he wasn't too bad but this year he gives no chance at all and is way to specific. Les examens sont trop specifiques and it has nothing to do with crim.
I am surprised this prof is still allowed to teach at uOttawa. He assigns hundreds of pages to study (and know by heart) for each exam, and asks absolutely academically irrelevent questions about them. Most of his exams are about the readings, and what is about the course will not be on his slides. Trap questions and no care for his class. RUN!
I agree with the last few comments below. I do not understand why this guy is even allowed to teach. The amount that you need to read is extremely excessive. The questions he asks on exams are not relevant to the class. He makes us memorize EVERYTHING from his long, exhausting readings. Like little tiny irrelevant details.
expects you to know minuscule details from 24-page readings and tests you on them. Reads of the slides during class and doesn't elaborate further. Unwilling to change teaching/grading methods even after receiving feedback from students that they are being set up to fail.
Did not record any classes so presence is required, 6 pop quizzes that you have 5 minutes to do, tried to force respondus on us, irrelevant details are put on exams and if I had a dollar for every time he mentions Canada Post I would be able to pay for my degree. The only perk was the bond that the students had for not wanting to attend class
Horrible just horrible. He asked us a question that was from the FOOTNOTE of a long and hard reading. Like dozens and dozens of pages. You will need to read SEVERAL HUNDRED PAGES and he could ask you specific words, dates, times, names from these readings. His exams are EXTREMELY unfair.
Really cool and easy if you study a minimum and read the texts. The bad comments are a little group or the same person and they always challenged the prof. Really annoying for the other students!
Professor Doiron is a great professor. He always gives students the opportunity to ask questions regarding the course content if they need and he makes his lectures entertaining. I honestly don't understand all the bad reviews on here because he is definitely one of the better profs at uOttawa. Would 100% recommend him as a prof.
He convey's the subject in an interesting way for students to engage however, he will not change your grade even if you are able justify them. Also the exams are very specific to the readings... will not be taking his class again.
He's so specific when it comes to the question on the exam. Also, he talks about useless stuff for most of the class and then rushes the important slides at the end.
horrible and the questions are not about crimino, it's about small details that nobody remembered.
Nice guy but his class is ridiculous. Makes you read a book + articles then ask the most stupid and irrelevant questions. His exams are so hard and you need to remember stuff he didn't even talk about "we saw this during class" no tf we didn't. Talks alot about his life then rushes through the slides at the end of class (class is not even recorded)
He is a good prof, tries to make his lectures entertaining and clearly enjoys the subject of criminology. You will need to read a lot, and some of the exam questions will be pretty specific. In my experience, he has always mentioned the "surprise" quizzes in advance. Take good notes in class and on readings and you'll be fine.
I've had this prof for multiple classes. I honestly think he is one of the better profs I've ever had. At first, I believed him to be too severe, but after my second class with him I saw that he is really good and he only wants for students to succeed. He makes you work for it that's true, but the result at the end makes it all the better.
M. Doiron is definitely one of my favorite profs! He makes his classes fun and engaging while teaching you useful information. His lectures keep you interested and go by very fast. M. Doiron knows what he talks about in class and always comes prepared. If you put in the effort in his classes, he will make sure that you succeed!
Dont take this class with this prof. His exams are way too specific to the lectures & have nothing to do with criminology. During the class, he rushes all the important information at the end. Theres also surprise quizzes that have 5 questions and you only get 5 min.
Very interesting and captivating professor. I really liked participating to his lectures which you should DEFINITELY participate since there will be 'surprise' quizzes in his class. In general, he was fine except when purposely downgrading students to maintain an average that suits his expectations.
Do not take a class with this professor. Long lectures where he reads the entire Power point, except for the moments where he tells personnal anecdotes. DO TAKE NOTES on them because some exam questions are about these anecdotes. Unrelevant questions in exams like dates which do not represent the understanding of the material. Not recorded classes.
the lectures were really interactive which made them nice
He plays a lot of long videos from the 80s during class and uses outdated statistics. He gives pop quizzes on arbitrary things that don't apply at all to the learning outcomes or understanding of the concepts like, "What town was Bob from the video from?" He is the least caring instructor I have ever met.
THIS MAN IS NOT YOUR TEACHER, THE TEXTBOOK IS. I learned everything from the textbook, 70% of his quiz/exam questions are from the textbook, and the other 30% are irrelevant bits of info that you would have to have a rainman-like attention to detail to remember. I'm sure this same class would be very cool if you had a different prof.
Doiron is a super entertaining prof, super helpful if you have a late 3 hour lecture! His surprise quizzes are pretty easy as long as you pay attention and take a lot of notes since they're open book. He tests a lot on the text book and not a lot on the lecture (they're usually only about his anecdotes). overall, great prof would def recommend.
I loved him as a professor. He keeps you engaged and his quizzes are easy if you're paying attention. The midterm is exactly what you'd expect if you pay attention in class. He is caring and wants his class to succeed. I recommend taking this course. He makes it interesting.
I have complicated feelings about this professor. He can be funny and the pop quizzes are an easy way to get a good grade. However, at the start of class he tended to go off topic which means we would only get through 10-20 slides out of around 130. So i feel like Ive had to teach myself the course content mostly.
I honestly don't understand why less than half of the raters would take him again. He is a very caring prof and entertaining. He does have Pop Quizzes but he tells you the class prior + they're very easy (5 question - 5min) if you did what he said to do (video or lecture). I have now taken him in 3 classes total and will do again any chance I can.
This class was lowkey hard and required a lot of work. The midterm and final were hard, and the graded material is barely shown in class. His lectures are very long and boring but you have to attend because he does surprise quizzes (usually 5min and 5 questions, not too hard). Just goes through all 120 slides in the last 5 mins of the class. Avoid.
Good professor.
A prof that makes three hour lectures interesting and making you want to learn more. love him
The textbook was mandatory, but to be honest, I never read it and could've done better with it, but if you're just hoping to do bare minimum, you'll be fine. He said that readings were on exams, but I never felt like there was. The quizzes are easy for the most part, but since they are out of 5, getting 1 wrong or even 2 feels like SO MUCH.
Definitely need to put in the time reading the textbook & taking notes for the class, but if you are able to keep up with the lectures it's manageable. He definitely knows the material, though some of his statistics could use an update from the mid 2000s
Don't like his methods of teaching, that affects everything else in my opinion. Maybe he's better in English but just didn't like him, quizs were on documentaries in class not course content
you'l have 6 quizzes during the semester which you won't know when. This professor is always comparing us to other class saying they're better and easier to teach. He's very strict, you can't talk or even whisper because he'll kick you out.
He is hilarious and this was my favorite class. Even if there's pop-quizzes (he informs you at the beginning), he makes me wanna be there each class.
He is an okay professor, but sometimes he rambles in class. The surprise quizzes are doable because it's about documentaries that he will show you right before the quiz. Can be pretty strict but he seems nice and accommodating.
Loved this prof, he is passionate about criminal law for sure. Uses exemples and makes it fun and easy to understand. Exams are not too hard and everything has to do with stuff we saw in class or lectures. Good teacher in general, makes the 3 hour classes fun and interesting.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS: reads straight off the slides and goes on tangents for 30 mins about his personal experience and none of it is relevant. Claims that 70% of the exams are based on his pp. THEY'RE NOT. He assigns like 500 pages of readings and its about 40% of the exam and its SPECIFIC DETAILS. There's 5 pop quizzes noted on 5, mess up 2 60%
6 pop quizzes in the semester (that forces you to attend each class), he will keep the 5 best grades. The first 4 are on documentaries/videos he plays right before the quiz (beware of those and take notes about every details), one of them is a question and the last one is about one of the readings you had to do. The 5 quizzes + mid-term + final.
Quizzes after watching documentaries that portray on extreme details. His exams are just as precise (will ask for precise numbers in ages, years, etc). He tends to talk about random things for first few hours then skims through the rest of the material at the very end. Lecture material is the condensed version of the textbook he makes you read.
He assigns two chapters a week and each chapter is about 45 pages so it's super time-consuming & a lot to memorize. In class, he often goes off on personal tangents, which, while interesting, as they are relevant to the field-- waste time and it becomes confusing what is course material. He reads off the slides word for word. Memorization heavy.
Easy grade for midterm, but hated his pop quizzes. Quizzes were on the longest and most boring videos ever. The questions were on very random and specific things so take notes on EVERYTHING. Not super friendly, not very organized sliced, but does tell you most of the things you need to study for.
There were pop quizzes, but they were so easy. Michel did read off of the slide a lot, but as for exams and grading, it is so easy to do well. His final and midterm were super easy and I would totally recommend him if you are looking for a class that you don't have to try hard in
All the other rating are very true, He reads off the pp then talks a bunch, and some things that he says verbally are important to remember but a lot of it is just talking. Compared to my other classes I find this one hard to study for because I feel like its just a bunch of facts, like im not learning towards a specific knowledge at the end
Great guy!
I do like Michel as a person, but not so much as a professor. I was a bit taken back when his exam had questions that stemmed from casual conversation during lectures; the average person would not have retained that information as they'd prefer to memorize lecture/textbook content. Textbook mainly on exam, lectures feel useless.
lectures are entertaining. there were times where we barley went through slides because of how off topic he went. attendance is not really mandatory. he does assign random quizzes worth your grade though. read the textbook! some of his exam questions were random and not based on the readings. just random info he would throw in class
Michel is not the friendliest but he's really passionate about what he teaches. His exams do focus on little details like years and percentages so beware of that. You will need the textbook as you will read the entire thing for this class. There are pop quizzes but as long as you pay attention, they are super easy. He's a good professor for sure.
He seems like an alright guy. Keeps complaining about people not showing up to his class but if it weren't for the pop-quizzes there really is no reason to go (I say this as someone who went to every single one). He reads off the slides (which are a summary of the readings) and goes off on tangents. Entertaining, but not very useful unfortunately.
He's a good person and very accessible outside of class. His pop quizzes are very easy since they're either based on documentaries or pre-test material. His midterm was very specific and he was lenient on how he would grade future assignments/exams. Make sure you read the whole textbook!
Be sure to write down everything he says because he puts specific questions on his exams based on random things he's said in class. Pop quizzes are pretty easy. Be sure to attend the lectures before exams since he tells you almost all the short answer questions you are going to get. As long as you show up to class you should get a decent mark.
Engaging lectures and fun class overall, but the professor can be strict with pop quizzes on obscure details. Staying on top of the readings and using study tools like Unstuckstudy helped me stay prepared.
I really liked Michel as a professor and a person. I enjoyed his class so much and will be trying to take his classes in the future. BE CAREFUL THO! he has quizzes where he will talk about specific info in class that is not on lectures, and implement them in the quizzes. attendance is not mandatory, but go to the lectures it's important.
Would take his class anytime
This teacher is awesome, he's very funny and makes his classes interesting. Very easy to ask questions, always ready to help. He uses pop quizzes, very easy 5 questions quizzes which u don't need to study for just attend class and take notes on documentaries shown in class, very good way to boost your grade.
- loves participation - pop quizzes that count for grade - gives examples of questions that are on the exams the last class before the exams - read the weekly readings they help understand the class and help prepare for the exams
This guy is the GOAT. His pop quizzes were straight forward and predictable (and honestly the videos he bases them off of are super interesting). His fun anecdotes are entertaining and make boring content more fun. Also, he literally tells you information that's important - you can know what to study. Content is a lot, but awesome prof. 10/10
