Given that she's new to teaching, she's all right. Sometimes unclear, prone to bad handwriting, but her exams are easy and she's fair with grading. Don't bother with the textbook- haven't bought/opened one so far and I'm getting an A. Summary: not a wonderful teacher, but the class is so easy it doesn't matter much.
Very boring lectures and she is not good at explaining things and loses her trail of thought easily. The class is easy if you are good at natural science or are really interested in the material...otherwise i wouldn't recommend it.
Boring lectures, but exams are not difficult. Do the study guides before every exams and you'll be fine.
I am surprised at the other responses. Class average for the 2nd exam was nearly a D (so many Fs!). If you study, it's fine. But the exams are relatively difficult, with all the short answer and obscure questions.
Class was very easy but incredibly boring. Don't bother buying the book, I didn't and still got an A. Her english is good but sometimes it's impossible to read what she writes on screen. This was her first time teaching a class, and while she's definitely knows a lot about the subject, her class was still very boring.
No reason to buy the textbook. Exams are difficult, and require quite a bit of studying for a 200 level class which I found out the hard way. For this reason it was irritating not to be able to miss more class my senior year. She is really sweet though and explains things very well. She knows her stuff.
She is a great professor. Very helpful. The people who did bad were the people who expected they could not go to class and not study. Maybe a bit more difficult if you are not a science major but overall pretty easy and interesting. Her writing can be difficult to read. Go to her office hours. She is amazing!
Lots of information for a mini course. Don't buy a book! She randomly passes around attendance sheets, so go to class. Quizzes count as extra credit.
Probably the most boring professor I have ever had, and I've had a lot. A ton of extra credit is offered, so even if you do poorly on the test there is still hope. However, extra credit is earned by paying attention, which is nearly impossible to do.
Seriously the most boring class I have ever taken, be it in college, high school, or grade school. I just wanted to die everytime I went to the class. I could not pay attention at all. The material is somewhat interesting, but I don't know how you could ever stay focused for the whole hour. I applaud anyone who can pay attention in this class.
Honestly, Worst professor ever. I will give my reasoning. Geosci 110 is a minicourse, so 99% of the ppl taking it dont know anything about the oceans. She has 30 slide powerpoints each lecture, filled with tons of information, so detailed and specific. She doesn't give any background, but just posts the information.NO REVIEW.
Though the class may be boring (compared to eecs 314, which is the class I was overlaping, it actually seems exciting), go to it. If you go to lectures, pay attention, you will do good on the exam. There is a lot of information, but once she tells you what you need to know, and there really isn't that much.
Pretty average instruction--not great, not terrible. I was constantly bored in her lectures and didn't even realize how interesting the subject is until I studied for the final. Still, it's an easy class for NS distribution, especially because you get extra credit from quizzes (and sometimes just for being at lectures).
Okay instructor; definitely chose interesting course material (can vary by section). Lectures were kind of dry & I often fell asleep or left early. Gives extra credit for being in class & for quizzes, which was tremendously helpful. I got an A+ just by cramming right before the exam. Some questions did require having been in lecture though...
SO boring. It's a really interesting subject, but she talked down to us the whole time. Other profs for minicourses have made this kind of info must more interesting, just by picking up the pace. Easy class if you're looking for a NS distribution. Take it Pass/Fail and you've got nothing to worry about at all.
Worst teacher ever. Lecture is very very boring and her pronounciation is so bad that students can't even understand. Her explanation is just BAD. Too much stuffs to study for final. (more than 30 slides per powerpoint and there are about 8 powerpoints). Exam is so hard and tricky. Don't take this professor's class. You will regret.
I took history of the oceans and coral reefs. I found both classes interesting. Most of the concepts are pretty basic and if you do her study guide and take good notes you will ace the exam. You must attend the lectures! As far as mini courses go, it doesn't get much easier.
Took earth science for non-majors at a neighboring university, study guide is huge and the test does not contain much of the information on the study guide, lectures are like a slow death
Very interesting material that had a lot of potential to be interesting. However, I fell asleep during almost every lecutre. Regardless, I still ended up getting 100% on the final.
I took a Coral Reefs mini course with her. She was very knowledgeable and helpful. The final is the only grade, and quizzes are extra credit. I ended with over 100%. Easiest class I've ever taken in my life. And even though I'm really bad with accents, I never once had a problem understanding her.
This was way too difficult to be called a minicourse. I ended up getting an A+ in the class, but the exam is 100% of the grade and the questions are so tricky. I walked out thinking I had failed. And she is kind of hard to understand. I would stay away from her "mini"courses.
Literally didn't open the textbook once. Don't buy it. Attend class! Every day we attended we received an extra credit point towards the next test. Whole course was painfully boring lectures and 3 tests with an optional final that replaces your lowest test grade.
This class was O.K. quizzes 30% & final 70%. Quizzes are pretty easy, as long as you remember to do them online. it is a mini-course so she talks pretty fast to get all the material in, but is pretty clear in her explanations. She addresses questions during class, but not office hours. study hard for final exam, and GO TO CLASS for notes.
Way too tough for a minicourse you expect to come in and just get through. Quizzes online & she gives you the smallest window to complete them (half the time you're able to do it is when a normal person would be sleeping). Came down to the final and the questions were way to tricky for a minicourse. She needs to realize what shes actually teaching
Completely undeserving of status as a UofM professor. Always late to class and doesn't have slides prepared. Her slides and understanding of material are as deep as Wikipedia. She complains that she is too busy with classes to set appointment times, but she does no research nor anything important aside from lecturing, at which she is poor at best.
Truly awful. Homework does not correlate to coursework at all, the exam was completely random and harshly graded, and she seems to barely know the material she is lecturing on. She has been rude to numerous students and seems completely disinterested in teaching. Based on the amount of work, I don't think she realizes it's a 2-credit course.
Michela is rude, unhelpful, not very knowledgeable (her slides were literally from wikipedia and her tests were pictures from google), disorganized, and, quite frankly, overall a terrible professor. No idea why she teaches at UofM.
Do not take this course. Wording on study quizzes is nonsensical, doesn't allow you to see what you got right and wrong on the quiz, gives access to quiz before all material has been taught. 010 would not recommend
All of her 1 credit EARTH courses are amazing for non-NS kids
Wording on study quizzes makes them difficult. Lectures are badly put together so it's hard to figure out exactly what she wants to tell us. She's quite brusque and sends around an attendance sheet each day (but I think the attendance points are bonus?)
She talks too quickly and fits way to much information in one lecture. If you zone out for 5 minutes, good luck. A lot of the questions are about things that were barely covered in lecture. If you are considering taking a minicourse, find a different professor.
Dont take this course, Not easy A. The study quizzes are fill in the blanks, with a wordbank. However, the answers are not given until the exam has ended. The exam consists of MC questions and it won't tell you what questions you have done wrong. Have extra credit though.
Super easy class and a very nice lady. Barely did any work and there was no exams or papers, just six online assignments. Nothing about the class was difficult. Showing up to lecture was extra credit and got a 100% on every assignment. Lecture was not the most interesting but could have been worse and often got other work done in class.
Easiest possible class. 3 quizzes, all answers directly from the lecture slides, provides you with a study guide that contains all questions. Attendance is extra credit. No homework ever. Labs can be long but nothing horrific. Decent professor, probably would've helped a student if anyone in the class had actually needed it. Slides covered everythi
I took Arnaboldi for Earth172/Environ111. The class made me think about sustainability on a deep level as well as a day-to-day basis. She's a very nice woman and makes it easy to succeed. All of the information is from her powerpoints. She gives out a study guide for exams at the beginning of the semester, so just fill it in. Overall, easy A.
Professor Arnaboldi's first-year seminar- Coral Reef Dynamics was a very interesting course. She is very knowledgeable about the field and was good at answering questions and explaining things if you didn't get it the first time. Exams and presentations are straightforward and overall I learned a lot.
Gives long, overly-technical, and just generally difficult-to-understand lectures. She makes it nearly impossible to take notes due to the sheer volume of information thrown at you in one class period, so you are left going over the minimally-helpful lecture slides on your own time just to feel like you understand what she is trying to teach.
I love Michela, and I have taken 3 classes with her. She's very humorous and open to getting to know students. Most people know her from her large mini-courses, but I would recommend taking a smaller sustainability/oceanography course with her. Her lectures are very clear, and so are the rest of the materials she presents.
Even though her class was easy, lectures were boring. There were several concepts that she didn't explain, making them confusing. Gave study guides before tests, so it was easy to get a good grade.
Lectures are extremely boring, she is rude to students and doesn't understand that for most of us, this one credit mini-course is the least of our worries. Her test questions are vague and confusing. She thinks too highly of herself
Worst professor I've ever had. Even though you need a 1 credit Natural Sciences course, do not take this one. She is quite disrespectful to students.
She is a very relaxed professor. The material is dense but the exam was an easy surface-level overview of the material that she covered, plus she lets you use a notes sheet. She moves pretty fast through the slides, but they are all posted ahead of time. The HWs are a bit difficult and sometimes unclear, but she made a couple of them extra credit.
Make sure to attend every class because she gives out extra credit at random. Her lectures are not interesting and she goes over the material very fast. The quizzes are not that bad, but make sure to study for the exams.
This class was so easy and involved almost no work. Went to class literally one time (on the first day) and still got a good grade. Take with friends so that you can study for the online assignments together.
She was unresponsive, rude and mediocre at teaching. For a 1 credit mini course, her exams were online but still way harder than they needed to be.
i'm astounded at all the low reviews :(( dr arnaboldi's lectures are mostly very interesting and engaging, save for a few on very dry topics that would be difficult to make interesting. her study guides tell you EXACTLY what you need to know for exams, if you go over these theres no reason not to get an A. i put in minimal work for a good grade
I had heard complaints about Professor Arnaboldi's other classes, however, assuming this was a one credit course I figured it wouldn't be too difficult. The class work was minimal, however, her exams were oddly specific and very difficult for a one credit course. Her lectures don't cover or emphasize the material covered in the exams at all.
I would not recommend taking this class. For a one credit natural science class the exams were way too specific and covered information that was not on the powerpoint and mentioned very briefly if at all in class. The study guides included information that was not even in the powerpoint, and did not reflect what was on the exam.
Dr. Arnaboldi has been my favorite professor thus far. Her classes are lecture heavy, but she tries to keep them interesting in my experience. There are multiple extra credit opportunities which balance out the occasional weirdly specific exam question. She is a very lenient grader in my experience, as well.
Michela Arnaboldi is a great professor. She taught very well and, with the exception of some odd exam questions, the class was very easy to pass. As long as you did your work and participated in discussions, you received an A. There are also many extra credit opportunities. Nice woman, too.
She was extremely unhelpful and unrealistic. She will not offer any options even for legitimate reasons of missing a quiz or mishaps on her online exams, when it has zero effect on her what-so-ever other than actually helping her students. She even stopped mid lecture to very rudely call out a person for being late in front of 100+ people. Awful.
Stay clear from EARTH 110 if you're looking for an easy A. The course is heavily weighted toward 2 online (i.e., LockDown Browser) exams that you're expected to take w/out using outside resources. The content for several questions on these exams were NOT covered AT ALL in class. In addition, many questions were poorly written and confusing.
Dr. Arnaboldi is a great professor. She handled her transition to online due to COVID-19 very well. As long as you show up and take good notes in lecture, you will do well on the exams!
In the switch to remote learning she went to recorded lectures and more assignments. However, these were not difficult or long. I also found her to be very understanding and she really cared about how her students were doing. Her homework was not long and she graded easily. The project and book report was flexible.
The least understanding or friendly professor I have encountered. Do not bother asking her for any exceptions or extensions, she will not accommodate. To teach in such a way during a pandemic, when nobody is at their best is to lack the understanding of what makes a good educator. Fine in all other aspects, though incredibly boring to listen to.
Overall I think that Dr. Arnaboldi is a good lecturer, and she was good at simplifying and explaining everything. Since the class was remote and asynchronous, there was not much engagement with other people in the class, but I still learned a good amount.
asynchronous and remote, watched 2-3 hours of lecture recordings each week with a quiz and 3 exams total, there's a lot of extra credit. lectures were pretty easy to understand
lectures were ok jargon heavy & never really clear on what you needed to know for the exams. lots of extra credit opportunities & quizzes bc of covid, which is fair bc the daily quizzes were easy bc she really just wanted to make sure everyone was paying attention. sometimes youll get a weird question or two on the exams. boring but easy.
The lectures are honestly the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. They're just screen recordings of Dr. Arnaboldi speaking painfully slow and arbitrarily clicking through her cluttered and unorganized sldies. She seems to just say stuff on the fly without forethought and shows random videos and websites from the internet. At least it's an easy A!
She just does not give two craps about her students. Probably the worst email interaction I have ever had with a professor.
She gave lots of opportunity for extra credit and students were given multiple attempts on quizzes, plus our lowest quiz grades were dropped. Her lectures can sometimes be a bit messy and graphic heavy. There were clear study guides for each lecture that helped a lot on the midterms. If you take good notes, you will do well.
Michela is an amazing professor and such a caring person! I took her intro ENV111 class and another class she taught at the Bio-station and they were both so fun and educational. She provides clear directions and I would highly recommend going to office hours if you have any quesitons.
Lectures are way to long and contain far to much information. Exams are full of multiple choice questions that were not covered. Instead of a comprehensive study guide there were 7 full length study guides for just the first exam. Reveiw day is just the professor sitting on her computer. Overall very frustrating and unspecific
RUNN! Half of the quizzes don't make any sense and when you try to get a point back on your quiz and prove that you are right, she literally will not care and refuses to give any points back. Also, some of the quizzes cover material that simply wasn't taught leading to not knowing what the answer would be on the quiz. Please take a different class.
Worst Environmental professor I had at U of M. I will never ever take her class again. She not only teaches remotely but also the recordings she uses are disorganized and wordy. She pretends to be nice to her students, but in fact when you ask her simple questions, she would just ask you to watch the recording again.
Professor Arnaboldi is the most mediocre and bland professor I've ever had. Her assignments and tests really make you apply your knowledge, but also make learning very obscure fluff a priority. It doesn't help that her lectures are boring either. Still she is better than a good chunk of profs I've had, so taking her class isn't horrible at all.
Prof. Arnaboldi was not very organized. She is not a very good lecturer. The canvas page was extremely difficult to navigate. There were way too many assignments, most of which were not worth very many points, which made it really difficult to keep track of what was due when. I would not recommend.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. What was supposed to be a 1 credit course ended up being more difficult and more confusing than the rest of my 4 credit courses. Grade is heavily based on tests, but the tests make little sense and do not reflect what was learned in lectures.
This class wasn't terrible, but was more work than I wanted from a 1-credit minicourse. Dr. Arnaboldi is very knowledgeable and respectful, but the workload and depth of the course needs to be trimmed. Most lectures required, easy quizzes, high-stakes exams, interesting topic.
Dr. Arnaboldi is really interested in glaciers, her lectures are a little sleepy which is not great since you need to pay attention to all the lectures since that's the only thing the exams are on (no readings). Besides the exams, which are manageable, I had to do two easy presentations, a tedious but easy paper, and some canvas discussions.
This was an extremely easy 1 credit course. Although attendance wasn't mandatory, Dr. Arnaboldi emphasized that we should show up to class, but I actually stopped going to lectures after awhile. Sometimes her lecture quizzes are hard to figure out along with her study guides, but Google is a great resource. Drawback: lectures are extremely boring.
Dr. Arnaboldi explains the material very well. This class in particular was nice because it pushed for library research culminating in a final project that is intended to be installed on campus. There were no exams and only simple assignments that went toward your final project. It was a new project, so the direction was a bit unclear at times.
Treats her one credit class like we all want to study coral reef and eventually become professors on this subject. It's not that serious, I presume most of us took this class for the natural science credit. Do not take her class. Her exams are like 50% of lecture and 50% random facts on the topic of coral reefs.
Her video lectures were poorly structured, with frequent jumps between concepts. Slides with excessive text were flashed for a few seconds, while images or graphs were displayed for extended periods. I frequently had to rewind to grasp the instructor's rapid-fire explanations, which often bore no relation to the slides. She seems passionate, but..
Arnabaldi provides a truly frustrating experience. Final project was a multi-page single spaced paper along with an activity. Spent quality time on it to be told it was "incomplete at best", she ignored parts of my project then marked them as missing on the rubric. Overall a careless instructor I will be avoiding at all costs going forward.
I would not recommend this professor for any classes. I have taken her for many earth classes and I did not enjoy any of them. A lot of the quizzes and exams contain information not found in lectures. The work load is way too much for a one credit intro course.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Professor Arnaboldi treats this class like it is worth 4 credits and the workload is ridiculous for a 1-credit class that most people take to get natural science distributions out of the way. I am taking 17 credits this semester and this class was the most work I had through the first half of the semester. Steer clear.
Professor Arnaboldi is the worst professor I've had at Michigan. A 1-credit intro to coral reefs class has caused me more stress than any of my 4-credit major classes. She treats the class like we are studying to become marine biologists. The 2 in person exams are based on random things she says in lecture and are way too difficult for earth 100.
If you show up you'll be fine. She does test a lot about what she talks about instead of what's on the slides (expected), but the exams are very easy. Barely paid attention and got a decent grade. Recommend if you need an extra credit. I will say there is an annoying amount of outside of class work for a 1 credit class but it's all severely easy.
she's really caring and if you do all of the assignments, you will get an A
Dr. Arnaboldi was such a great professor. Almost all assignments were optional (daily quizzes, free-response questions, etc.), but they were good practice for understanding the material. She was super helpful and would make time to explain any confusing material. The class material itself was super interesting and fun to learn about.
Loved taking this class! There were many opportunities to get the grade that you wanted, and you could never lose points because the grading scale only goes up. If I was a freshman looking for an easy A and a fun class I would take Earth 156 a hundred times over again.
I could tell Arnaboldi really cared about the content, but lectures were pretty long and sometimes boring if you aren't into oceanography. SUPER easy A with lots of opportunities for credit, most information can be googled though. Would recommend for natural science credit.
This was the worst class I've ever taken
Missed out on an A threshold by less than 10 points when I got well above the class average on the last 2 exams and had almost 1,000 more points than the average person in class
