Go to class and do your work and you'll be fine. Speeches are not hard just follow the outline. Overall a good teacher.
So she only lectures on one day of the week and the second day you are in class with your graduate assistant, where he/she will be grading all of your speeches!! Be aware who you get, you might have to kiss ass to get an A in your speeches:( But its worth the A's right?? Do whatever it takes to make best buddies with the GA that you get! Good luck!
Ok so this class is a waste of time. We are in a POD Cast section which means that we have to listen to her talk into a mic which half the time is not on topic. It is mandatory to buy a $30 IClicker for this class which was a waste because you barly use it. The teaching on speeches sucks also, people still are using vocal fillers! Do not take her!
Professor Foss-Snowden was great, I really enjoyed her lectures but the other portion taught by her GA Brooke wasn't as pleasant because grading depended on how she felt about you personally. Hopefully Brooke can get over that flaw and teach to her full potential because she is very knowledgable about the COMS subject.
Easy participation points. Attend the classes often, be on time, and use the iClickers during class surveys. Tests weren't too bad. If you listen during lecture and review your notes and the text then tests will be a breeze. I had the Friday class with GA Althouse after the lecture. Pick good topics and follow the speech outlines and you'll pass.
Do not take this class if your taking it over podcast because half the students are lazy and do not want to listen to them and the final covers the whole semester and no one ever studies. i had to try really hard just for a B+
I Loved her. I took her over winter session. It was a lot of work for three weeks but totally worth it. She is funny and very helpful.
Dr. Foss is an excellent professor. She is young so she can relate to students' experiences, but she is also very knowledgeable. I took her Winter Intersession class which was doable, but very demanding of your time-11 days, 4 speeches, 2 exams, 1 paper. She gives you all the info you need to prepare for your speeches and grades fair. LOVED her!
Dr. Foss is a cool teacher. She cares about the progression of her students and is young in appearance as well as at heart. If you are looking for an easy A, don't take her class, but if you want to be rewarded for your hard work and want to leave the class educated about the subject, take her class. She has the whole sexy librarian thing working 2.
Ok, so Professor Foss is a good teacher, however alot of her COMS 103 classes are taught by "graduate assistants". Your grade really depends on your "GA". I could tell my GA somewhat "typecasts" people. She graded you on her likeness of your personality, rather then quality of work. She misses the point of the assignment. My GA was Brooke Boehning.
I haven?t had any professor who lectures like Dr. Foss, She uses video clips and makes the class enjoyable. My only pet peeve is that she INSISTS students call her Dr, and I think she?s a bit full of herself, but hey if I was a doctor maybe I would be too. I had Steven for a GA and he was decent. Do the work and you will pass.
Dr. Foss is a great professor. She is fun and interesting. She can be a little condescending at times, and it is not hard to tell which end of the political spectrum her views fall. If you can overlook those things, and take her with a grain of salt, you will really enjoy her class!
Please just get a good GA, b/c my GA, Amanda Hamilton, totally shows favoritism! Foss isn't that good either! Be prepare to take tests that ask questions about HER, like what she calls a certain thing, blah blah blah...totally not related to the course materials!
Took online class. Worked very hard to get an A. Avg test grade = C. Warning: some test Q's were not from podcasts or book. Tells u tests will only cover basic concepts - not true! Study the trivia as well! Quite full of herself, but doesn't think much of students. OTOH, I had GA Brooke and thought she was very fair despite what others say.
COMS 103 is ok. It?s all about the GA you get stuck with. Professor has a grading metric sheet for each of the 3 formal speeches ? ASK FOR IT! With the grading metric you can write your speech to meet the requirements and score big points. It?s all about improvement too ? so save some room for improvement in later speeches!
It?s true the teacher is very condescending. You could take a class with her or with a GA. I personally don?t think GA make good teachers. They do not know how to grade and usually that favor a couple or than others. This was the worst experience I had at Sac State. Her book is over price, the iclicker we rarely used, worst class ever. It too bad
Dr. Foss was AMAZING! Her class was fun and dynamic. The iclicker was used for every class; sometimes for attendance and other times for getting extra credit points. My GA was Kristina Gorgevich and she was helpful, nice, and understanding. Definitely go to their office hours, it will help. Take this class if you want to have fun while you learn.
the prof is cool funny whatever... but what matters is who you have for the GA...
I thought Dr. Foss's lectures were helpful. But the GA was too harsh. Rob Y. was too moody for a guy. It's like he was trying to prove something by being an as@%$#. He was soo hard n rude to the students.
Although I am an A student, I hated this class. Dr Foss was fine, but your GA is responsible for all your grades - mine sucked. Kristina Gorgevich showed favoritism, and was really full of herself.
easy class, do not buy textbooks they're useless. She provides all the notes you will need for quizzes online. 15 small quizzes.. just use Find feature in her notes to find the answers! Lab part of the class is taught by graduate students..easy teachers, helpful. i learned a lot and enjoyed the class at the same time. requires iclicker.
Last name ever,first name worst!!!
Wow!!!!!! what an attitude. all good comments are added by the professor herself. If u want to get "C" feel free to sign with her.
I loved Dr. Foss. I thought her lectures were entertaining and helpful. I actually enjoyed going to class and went to her office hour for help several times. I HATED the GA. GA has all the control and i did not enjoy being graded by someone with no experience. Got an A but I was not confident all semester.
I can't actually grade Foss since she wasnt in class. Andy was a great GA tho, really helpful and funny. The only thing that bothered me was that on the first day when she was there, she singled me out for working at the bookstore had me cover my ears while she told the rest of the class not to buy their book from the bookstore. SO UNPROFESSIONAL
the GA controls your faith. If she likes you, you get an A if not good luck!
The material is very time consuming. The speech criteria is insane and impossible to get a good grade on. Your GA does the grading and it didn't seem like mine understood it correctly and it was like she was told to grade hard. She's the only COMS103 teacher so good-luck and bear through it!
Foss is a great lecturer. I can understand why she is teaching this class. The few times that I missed lecture I was sad. However, because of the fact that each "class" has 150 students, the grading is all done by the GAs in section. I had John Beedy, he was pretty good. Just follow the evaluation sheet when writing your speech to get at least a B.
This class all comes down to which GA you get. If you get a good one you'll get A's on your speeches but if you get a bad one you'll struggle to pull a B or C on a speech. I gave some outstanding speeches but never received higher than a B on anything. Foss is pretty funny, sometimes a little aggressive with students (hit a heavy bag please).
I thought Michele Foss was a good professor. She is funny and keeps the class entertained with jokes. She knows her material and if you actually go to class and pay attention you will learn something. The only thing that sucks is that there is GA for certain sections. I never talked to her I always talked to my GA. I?m sure she would be willing to

Easy class depending on your GA. I got Tamara Moyer and she was great with grading our speeches & giving great feedback. Plus, she doesn't make you dress up like all the other GA's.NO NEED TO BUY THE BOOK!!I passed with an A without buying the book. For the Quizzes(10), ctrl + F is your friend. It's really an easy class
Dr. Foss is funny. Loved lecture. The GA'S on the other hand...hopefully you get a GA who is cool because if you don't, good luck pulling anything better than a C. They take their grading VERY seriously. Make sure you follow every speech exactly how it is assigned or you will be docked major points.
I don't understand why she is the ONLY professor that teaches this class. She is very intelligent, but it would be nice to have options. She makes you buy her internet book. It was not fully functional until 5 weeks into the class. The quizzes were not posted until mid semester. You have to listen to her pod casts which can be irritating.
I was never taught by her because it was a hybrid class, so the only time you intereacted with her was through listening through her audio lessons. As for a GA, your screwed if you get a bad one, for example Tamara Moyer. She was mine and she favored people. Uses "UMM" all the time but deducts points off if you use it. doesnt make sense..
Prof Foss is a funny and young but she can be a bit strict about showing up late or sleeping during lecture (will call you out). Has GA's snooping around making sure you're not texting. Makes you buy a stupid clicker ($30) that she barely uses. Discussion is easy IF you have a nice GA. 3 speeches, 10 online quizzes, final paper, NO EXAMS!
The funniest professor I've had. Her humor can be blunt at times but for the most part, it made me love attending class! She is also very strict. If you text in class she will spot you out in the entire class. The grading in this class depends solely on your GA. Most of the GAs are cool.
Dr. Foss has G.A.s teach her classes, so you never really see her. However, she is the mysterious "voice" behind the lectures. She makes lectures interesting and fun. My G.A. David Graham was good. Speech prompts are not very clear; do a basic speech format and choose unique topics, you'll do fine. Reading and lectures are essential to quizzes.
DONT need the book, but u have to buy it online cuz the hybrid class is strictly online. IF U GET TAMARA MOYER CHANGE SECTIONS! Ive noticed if she doesnt like you then she'll make stuff up on ur rubrics for ur speeches. Moyer insists her own papers are more important than her students grades. last time i checked UR THE GA, thats ur respondsibility!
This class was so frustrating because I'm not used to rhetoric, but the teacher is awesome. She is hard and expects you to participate but the lectures follow the book/tests while at the same time being interesting. I recommend getting the book because you'll need it for tests/papers.
Michele was perhaps the greatest professor I have had at CSUS. She's great! Her lectures are outstanding. She inserts hilarious clips into her powerpoints and makes the class fly by. Your grade ultimately depends on your GA. I had Cassie. She was new but really sweet. She grades a little hard but she makes section fun and comfortable.
I LOVE THIS CLASS! COMS is mandatory for Business majors, but I'd recommend it to everybody! The Graduate Assistants actually give you your grades in class, but as long as you participate and prepare for your speeches, its hard not to do well. Take her if you need COMS!
The lectures are entertaining but its everything you already heard from regular comm classes. Avoid Morgan Murphy if you can, he is an awful GA, tries to sound smart and be tough on us, just gives out low grades to make it look like he grades it carefully and making expectations as if this is the main course for a PhD. Its only a COMS class...
GA Joni is very helpful.
Format of class keeps changing. One way you don't need to attend is to give your clicker to someone in your section. Class is easy if your comfortable with speaking. Had Morgan Murphy as a GA who was cool as well.
The class was hybrid. Had Tamara as the GA. I learned so much from this class.
Great professor and her GA was great!
Great Proff! super exited and is into her lectures! makes the lectures enjoyable! GA JO was great too! most of the time was hard to understand her because english is not her 1st language so she struggles but she is very lenient.
She is very animated! Loved her lectures. But, the person you are actually having class with is your GA. I had Chris Patterson and he was awesome! That says enough I think. Overall, this Coms class wasn't that bad with all your work leading to one 8 minute final presentation.
GA was Nathan Thompson. He's great!! Extremely helpful, understanding and approachable. You do have a 10 min presentation that determines most of your grade, but lectures guide you through how to do really well on it. Not a lot of homework, readings are not required but they do help. Great class.
I love Dr. Foss!! She is a really good teacher, her lectures are really interesting and she makes them fun. Part of the time you are with a GA, mine kinda sucked, super unorganized. There are clicker quiz during the lecture, and one big speech. There are different assignments that lead up to the speech, easy class just do all of your work.
Class is taught and graded by a GA. I took a hybrid class so all the lectures were online. Listen to the lectures, there are extra credit oppurtunities. Book is Professors book and is online. Class helped me improve my speaking skills. Recommend
Dr. Foss is awesome!!!! She is so fun and witty! She won't be the one grading you, she had GAs that you go to a separate class for, but mine, Katreena Alder, was also amazing!!! Only 1 speech (7-9 minutes), no book, just reading small sections online, and a couple of clicker quizzes that don't affect your grade too much. Easy and fun class!
I took COMS 103 in the Fall and was very worried about this course and my fear of public speaking. My GA was Natalie Dejong and she did an excellent job helping me with the problems that I had and took a lot of extra time helping me. Thank you, Natalie!
Grading system for this class is ridiculous. If you happen to not do so good on on of the projects/points on quizzes, you're screwed from getting a good grade;hoping I can to at least pull a C. GA was ok at 1st, but quickly disliked her,her personality & attitude. Most of grade is based on written work NOT presentation..tho its a presentation class.
I really like Dr. Foss, the problem is she wasn't there for the labs, it was just the GA. It's my first experience with just a GA. However, both instructors were very accessible and Dr Foss' lectures were very clear. Overall a really good experience, but I don't know they did much for my already-existing presentation skills.
She is kind of crazy, but funny. Your Graduate Assistant does most of the grading, and they are all pretty cool. One big speech at the end, and a few assignments and quizzes, but its a pretty easy class overall.
Dr. Foss-Snowden was a great lecturer. Although, this course was hybrid (online & in-person), the lectures and the chapters available online were easy to follow. I took this class as a ComS major with 95% of my class mates being business majors. I still learned a lot! I would encourage anyone to take her and this class if they can.
COMS 103 is not taught by her but a Graduate Student; therefore, whoever the graduate that semester is based on your luck. I got a nice graduate. COMS 103 is not as scary as it sounds. there are weekly group impromptu speeches, final based on chapters, need iclicker, 2 papers, and final speech helped by graduate.
Not even taught by her but a grad student. Based on luck depending on the GA you get. She isn't involved. Don't buy the iclicker for extra credit it's not worth the money for so little points.
Took it in the Fall 2012 and had a GA. The GA grades everything and mine happened to be more of a stickler with APA format. Foss' lectures were entertaining and the exam was straight from notes or lectures. It was a hybrid class so the class met once a week and was mandatory. Didn't need a book since we had to buy the access code. Used clicker once
She is an AMAZING teacher! I took both her org coms class & rhetorical criticism! (Loved them both) Her rhetorical criticism is AWESOME! EVERYONE should take it! She is so knowledgable and helpful! If you ask, she will do everything she can to help you! She's funny, animated, smart, and just a great professor! I'd highly recommend her class!
Excellent teacher, excellent class. Very informative and helpful. Class was interesting every single meeting.
Good teacher! She is very engaging and makes the content interesting!
By far, my favorite professor at Sac State! She uses powerpoint for all her lectures and elaborates on the material so it is easy to stay on track as long as you are attending. There was a quiz for all of the chapters so it is essential that you keep up with the reading. Wrote 3 papers and a final. You'll love rhetoric once you've taken her class!
I've taken her for more than one class but 100B was my first experience with Dr. Foss. I must say she was a college career changer. She lays out the class very clearly from the beginning. Expect to be challenged and always read her feedback! Adjust yourself accordingly. The only thing is sometimes she can be late on returning work. She's a treat!
If you ever have the opportunity to take class with Dr. Foss DO IT! Not only is she passionate about her field, but she is also expert at communicating that passion and channeling it into effective teaching methods. She will push you, you need it. Topics chosen not assigned. I came out of her classes knowing what I want to do with my life.
Dr. Foss is amazing!!! She is cool and laid back but also extremely professional and knowledgeable. As fun and hilarious her classes are, it is balanced out as she holds high expectations from her students and grades accordingly to those expectations. She is a college life changer, and a treat to have as a professor! Must take her classes!!
Dr. Foss is my favorite teacher at sac state. She knows what she is talking about and make class interesting. Great sense of humor and helps you see the world from a different lens. She makes me want to go to grad school and study the media more. Great teacher with a lot of valuable knowledge to share with her students.
As an older student along with working full-time and raising a family, my initial thought was that I would not be able to pass her class. Grading criteria was tough but fair, and a ton of homework and projects were assigned. After three weeks in her class, she became my favorite professor and is the reason I am pursuing my graduate degree.
Dr. F is the funnest Professor I've had. I will think of her every time I watch TV. Her class gave me insights into pop culture and television that I have always wanted. 3
Incredible! I wish all teachers had this level of passion. Interesting lectures, provides great feedback for your papers. Took her class over Summer. Crammed a semester of writing into 6 weeks but would take it again with her if I had to.
Very funny and SMART! Makes school enjoyable - highly recommend taking a class from Dr. Foss!
Online final, which is the only time you might want the book. Lecture heavy and she uses a lot of modern examples mostly from the genre of horror. She's obviously knowledgable but I learned more from a CRC course tbh. This was a good refresher. She's very specific in what she wants and lays it out for you. Working really hard will get you an A.
If you are a good student, you will do good in this class. It's very well organized and she knows her stuff. Learned so much in only two-weeks. Would take again.
This professor is amazing. Arguably my favorite class/professor by far. This class is a core class and a writing intensive course so don't expect it to be easy. You have to work for your grade, but professor Foss really goes in depth with you and is very accessible when you need help. She is also very funny. Long live and prosper!
Dr. Foss is a GEM. She's wicked smart and offers lots of constructive help for students. The coursework is challenging but rewarding. Her lectures are very interactive and she is really funny! If you ever get the opportunity to take a class with her, DO IT! She's wonderful. One of the greatest COMS professors at Sac state.
This professor single handily made me change my perspective on the CSU system. I have never met such a charismatic professor in my life. The grading is fair and always makes sure to give detailed instructions when asked. Her lectures are entertaining and knowledgeable. Dr. Foss is extremely understanding as well as extremely helpful. I recommend!
I enjoyed taking this class with Dr. Foss. She is a caring and great profressor.
A professor that is built different? Dr. Foss-Snowden. I have not met a professor that is equal parts instructor & equal parts fun. Most instructors don't blend the two sides, but Dr. Foss does 100%. This class is pretty difficult just because it is a senior seminar & because you don't have a grade for the whole semester. HUGE paper due at the end
Professor Foss-Snowden is amazing! She makes her class fun while presenting materials. This being a media class, it's bound to have some fun stuff like short films or personal stories, but she went above and beyond to do more than just that. The analysis project was really fun and we got to choose our media artifacts for it, as well. Highly recmnd.
Attendance and participation are mandatory. 1 peer review, 3 method auditions, 1 self-evaluation participation sheet, and 1 huge final paper (300 pts). Prof was nice and she enjoyed teaching concepts. Slow grader so you wont know your grade until after she grades everything
Wrote 3 papers on different rhetorical concepts. She gave me a lot of stress and anxiety because she did not grade your papers in a timely manner. She did not answer questions in a straightforward manner either, so it was hard to figure out what she really wanted for the papers. This class will keep you on your toes, that's for sure.
I want to preface this review by saying that Dr. Foss is a great professor. She's very passionate about what she does, but the final project for this class is ridiculous in scope for adult college students who have other classes, work, and life to worry about. It's way too large of an undertaking for anyone who's full time school, or anything else.
Used an old version of a textbook. Be ready to learn who famous people she knows, as if it was part of learning lesson. If you want to be a tv critic, by all means, otherwise, skip and take a different profesor.
Dont take her class.
Research before you take Her class. He will not be empathetic of students hardships.
Great professor. Offers good feedback, respects her students, and knows what she is talking about. She wants her students to succeed, and will help them get to that point.
Dr. Foss is a pretty chill and sweet professor. She does cares about her students and does give an extension for the journal assignments we had to do. The work in this class was not easy but not too hard either. Get ready to take notes during lecture because the quiz is based on the zoom lectures.
She showed a lot of unprofessional behavior: late to office hours or just not show up to them; act immature in class, overtly picking “favorites” and being unnecessarily rude to others; wouldnt grade for months, etc. Also wasn't a great lecturer and mostly treated class like a personal place to voice her opinions rather than teach the material.
