Talks in circles a bit and somehow makes everything she says sound profound. Nevertheless, she was enthusiastic and kind to her students. Tests were extremely fair. Some of the readings were okay, but others were really boring. Probably a good class to take with a few other challenging courses. Pretty minimal time commitment.
This is one of my favorite classes at UNC. She is so nice and the material is fascinating. She also gives very constructive feedback on assignments and provides helpful resources for your research/projects
Besides her apparent obsession with Russian culture, the class is very interesting. It is not a huge time commitment and Dr. Rivkin-Fish is a great teacher. She is very passionate about class material.
I really enjoyed this class! Classes are mostly lectures or movies so you don't really have to show up to class. Even though she posts Powerpoints, beware of skipping class too much because she goes into a lot of detail in class. The readings are interesting and the grading is pretty fair. She doesn't post any grades on Sakai.
Dr. Rivkin-Fish is incredibly passionate about Russia and anthropology. Sometimes it gets a little dull, but it's not too difficult of a class and is interesting too!
I'm a Junior and this is the worst class I've ever taken. All you do is read the absolute most boring pieces of irrelevant garbage possible. All of your work is graded by her TA's, and they're terrible. Everything in this class is subject to her perceptions. Any interpretations of readings that are not the same as her or her TA's is not acceptable.
I really enjoyed this class. Very interesting and minimal effort required. She's a super nice professor, and grading is pretty easy depending on your TA. Definitely would recommend this class.
The class was super easy but lectures were so boring. I did not buy any of the books since I found them online. This class does not require much effort.
Rivkin-Fish is really passionate about what she teaches. If she doesn't explain a topic clearly enough, she will go over it until you understand. I learned a lot in her class through lecture and readings. Unlike other classes, the books that we had to read were fairly interesting.
Rivkin-Fish brings a lot of new, interesting, and engaging material! Her lectures sometimes got a little boring, but overall ANTH 147 is a great class & the ethnography we read was eye-opening. Tests are usually matching, definitions, and short answer. As long as you do the readings and pay attention in class you will learn a lot!
Fish is an awesome and passionate lecturer, but sometimes it can get pretty boring. Good news is even on tu/th classes she only goes for 50 minutes. While the class is not "hard", you will have to read the material to get a good grade. It also highly depends on what TA you have and how they grade.
I loved the material, but because this course had two professors, the grading scale and expectations were unclear. I feel like it ultimately affected the extra credit and my grade for the course. It was a really interesting class though and I enjoyed Dr. Rivkin-Fish's lectures.
The professor is a very sweet lady. It may have been the material of the course that made the class harder than it should be. It is a lot of reading, that you get tested on. The tests are short answer, and somewhat hard (so study). Attending class is mandatory because when you go back to look at lectures you will not understand and be lost.
The lectures were sometimes interesting but usually super boring. The tests should've been super easy considering they're matching, fill in the blank, and short answer- however, they were super specific on random details from class and the TAs hardly ever gave partial credit so it was extremely hard to get an A.
This is my first anthropology class and really got me to love that subject. The issue is attractive and you will be reading different passages focusing on it throughout the semester. Assignments are not heavy but lecture and reading material can make you overwhelmed. But as long as you study, you are fine.
Professor is really great and exams are easy as long as you pay attention in class. She does not make them tricky and you go over all the articles in recitation so make sure you take notes on them because they are on the exam. 6, 250 word essays, 3 graded, 3 as participation. Two midterms and a final. Definitely recommend taking this class.
Rivkin-FIsh is such a good and caring professor. The exams are very fair and as long as you keep up with the reading you should be fine. She gives amazing feedback and is altogether a pleasant professor.
This class was interesting (lectures kind of boring.) I would take her classes again, however, there is a lot of reading. I had to purchase 3 book for her class. There is little homework, just 6 short essays throughout the semester. The tests are easy, and she tells you what to study. Most of the questions are on ideas as a whole, not specifics.
She is absolutely amazing. She is a caring professor that has these fascinating lectures that depict so many different ways in which people look at the world and medicine in particular. I learned so much that is useful to me far beyond the classroom and more into my medicine career in the future. If you listen to her, you will succeed.
Overall, ANTH102 was an easy course - attendance not mandatory and all the lectures were posted online. However, in class, Professor Rivkin Fish often went on tangents about Russia - turning the class into a Russian history course rather than an intro anth class. Because of this, the class is very boring and it took a lot of effort to show up
The most amazing professor/class I've taken at UNC! She's incredible inspiring and gave such relevant and thought-provoking lectures. 11/10 recommend her and this class! It is extremely powerful/meaningful to me as a premed student and it's not difficult at all.
Most interesting & easiest class I took all semester. I actually really found her lectures fun to listen to. Honestly, as long as you just show up to her lectures and listen you will make an A on her midterm & final, they were incredibly easy and basically common sense. The midterm average for the class was 90+ if I remember correctly
It was her first time teaching this course. The material was really interesting and a good intro to cultural anthropology
Absolutely loved this class. Took it first semester freshman year and loved it. Rivkin-Fish is an amazing professor and makes the subject interesting. your grade does largely depend on your ta. Did an excellent job explaining the topics and the deeper meaning of the concepts.
This was one of the worst experiences I've had at UNC. First of all, Professor Rivkin-Fish was not accessible outside of class, despite the fact that we are in the middle of a pandemic. I sent her many emails that she simply never responded to. Additionally, she goes on tangents about Russia and her own research, which are irrelevant to the class.
Dr. RF is a really sweet individual, though I have felt dissonant with her delivery of course material. Does not respond to my emails. I wish exams were all short answer as this is a pretty subjective course and I feel multiple choice is not representative to the content of the course. Goes off tangent a lot
Porf. R-F was alright. I heard this class was amazing in person, but honestly felt very boring online. There was some sort of an issue going on with all 2 midterms. For a subjective class, MC questions were worth a lot. She tried her best to be accommodating, but it was hard to go to class with her going off tangents. My TA was very responsive
Took this as a gen ed for an easy A, but that wasn't my experience. Lectures were difficult to sit through. Didn't respond to emails. Issues with midterms and final exam, accused students of cheating every chance she got, then was unwilling to communicate about issues. Don't take this class online if you're expecting an easy A.
Professor RIvkin-Fish really struggled teaching during COVID. I would not recommend taking this class with her online. She changed exam formats the day of the exam, struggled with zoom, and exam grades took forever. Her review sessions were also not very helpful. The material wasn't necessarily hard but the lectures and reviews weren't helpful.
I think she could have been a lot more organized but she really was doing her best and the class was good. A lot of students took advantage of her kindness during the pandemic (ex. some people didn't see the second page on a test (their fault), complained, and we got to retake. Then they found problems with the retake.) She was accommodating though
She was a really great prof to have this semester! She received feedback really well from us about unclear emails, difficulty of exams, etc. She was also really good about extending deadlines and understanding student situations. She likes student engagement during lectures & her lectures were p good. Everything in the class is graded by your TA.
Honestly super disappointed in her. Took this class because friends liked her, but I found Prof R-F to be unreachable on multiple occasions. Wanted to like the class bc subject interested me, but she went on so many tangents about her own research/colleagues that lectures were muddy and not easy to follow. Not enough accommodations, wouldn't take.
Students were extremely rude to the professor and took advantage of her kindness. The class was pretty standard and not difficult. Super interesting too. The TA's were awesome and my TA graded super fast. Literally EVERY midterm, students had something bad to say about the test and made her remake it etc. This is an easy A for gen eds if u need it.
I have taken multiple anth classes with prof R-F and her lectures are absolutely outstanding. I think its unfair for people to say that she goes off on tangents in class - she gives relevant examples that allow you to see how anthropology can be applied to real life. She is very inspiring and her lectures are very meaningful. Highly recommend.
She is super passionate about the class and has great lectures. There are extra credit opportunities and she explains things in great detail. The midterms were graded easy as long as you understood the main idea. There is a lot of reading but you discuss it in class and recitation so you understand.
Prof. Rivkin-Fish is an incredible lecturer and you will not regret taking this course. I've learned so much this semester with her and I can't wait to take more Cultural Anthropology classes with her in the future.
I had her in person this semester and thought she was a super good teacher who is very passionate about this material. If you pay attention to the lectures, do your readings, and somewhat participate you will get an easy A. Tests are not hard and she really wants you to succeed.
Prof is nice but you don't get to know her bcs it's a large class, I thought the course had a lot of potential and is interesting at times but sometimes the lectures can be really boring. I took this for medical anthropology and it's not too hard but you have to read all the material or else you won't be able to answer any questions on the tests.
AMAZING TEACHER. So passionate about she talks about. Her lectures are so interesting although you can get bored at time. You will have to read 3 books and you will have to write about 6 papers in this class. Tests are that bad as long as you pay attention to the readings, lecture notes and books. Really fun class, extra credit offered.
Prof Rivkin-Fish was very passionate about the class and I found the class material interesting, but her slides were unhelpful since all the information you needed was what she said. She often spoke very quickly, making it hard to take notes or process before she moved on. It is manageable though if you keep up with the readings and listen.
I really enjoyed the course with Professor Rivkin-Fish. She is very knowledgeable on the subject, and her passion is clear in her lectures. There is 6 writing assignments and three exams that are graded by your TA, but my TA was great and very helpful. If you pay attention and take good notes in lectures, you will do well in the course.
There are six 250-word writing assignments and three exams. PPTs are semi-useless, as the important information is what she says. Lectures can get boring at times. There were a couple extra credit opportunities too. If you read the books, pay attention to lecture, and take good notes, you will do well in the course.
This was my second time taking her but through a 400 class. She is absolutely caring and very passionate about her fieldwork on health and gender in Russia. Readings are required to do well on papers and presentations. She is a picky grader, but her feedback is very thorough and supportive of your success in the course.
Her class gave me a lot of anxiety because she didn't know how to structure the class or how to make assignments. She never uses gradebook and no one knew their grade in the class until she put it into CC because 45% of our grade hadnt been graded until a week after the final and 2 days after the last day of finals. Interesting stuff, bad class.
Though lectures can be a bit boring, the tests were not difficult (as long as you attended recitation/read everything) and the readings were actually very interesting. I never really talked to her outside of class but she definitely shows that she cares about her students& wants them to get something from her class!
Professor Rivkin-Fish does everything she can to help students learn and succeed. She has clear guidelines, offers extra credit, and checks with TAs in order to design the exams so that students succeed. I will say that sometimes the lectures can get boring or muddled, but that's only because she wants to make sure everyone understands.
Professor Rivkin-Fish is an incredibly intelligent, caring, and accommodating teacher. The readings for this class were fascinating but quite difficult, but worth taking the course all the same. Discussions were inclusive of all voices and I felt safe and respected. Anyone interested in anth, health, or Russian culture/history will enjoy.
R-F is awesome. She gives great lectures with such interesting material. While attendance is mandatory as participation is a grade, I promise it is worth it because the class is so enjoyable. There aren't many assignments and she is a very fair grader. Love her would 100% take again.
Professor Rivkin-Fish is an overall amazing professor. Gives very constructive feedback and will help you develop ideas for any papers she assigns. While lectures may get a little boring from time-to-time, they were overall very interesting and informative, with a lot of discussion on lecture topic. I would definitely take this course again.
Lecture/readings are sometimes boring but topics are interesting. Pay attention in class and complete most of the readings to do well in the class. Grades completely based on exams and recitation attendance/reading responses that must be completed for recitation. Recitation isn't every week which is nice.
Amazing professor! Even at times when the lectures could get a bit boring, it was her passion for what she was teaching that always kept me engaged. Attendance was required for recitation, not lecture (but throughout the year we only had six recitations). Definitely take her class if you can, I never met a professor that cared more!
Prof R-F is one of my favorite professors at UNC! This was her second time teaching ANTH582 so she seemed unsure about assignments, course load, and semester schedule. You do need to complete 2 hours of fieldwork per week and write time-consuming fieldnotes. However, it is a very worthwhile course and you get to know your peers very well.
This class was super interesting, except the lectures can sometimes get boring and word-heavy. There is weekly reading that you have to do but it is not bad at all. It is an easy class to get an A in as long as you do the readings and pay attention in class.
Paired with amazing TA (Alfredo), my favorite professor so far. 4 grades in recitation and 3 in class BUT she actively ensures students understand assignments and feel comfortable with exams. Incredibly caring and passionate. Incorporates her own work, but it adds to the lecture. 10/10.
Amazing class and an amazing professor! If you do the readings and pay attention in lectures (which are very interesting) you will do well in the course. Learning about such diverse perspectives of healing was an eye-opening experience that I think every pre-med student should have.
Amazing professor! Her lectures are great, as she incorporates her own work too, and I enjoyed the books for the class. She's very passionate about her work and truly wants to make sure students understand the material. As long as you pay attention in lecture and go over the study guides, the exams aren't bad.
Not a particularly difficult course at all but Professor Rivkin-Fish can get pretty monotonous during her lectures. There is also so much unnecessary reading in this course. 300-400 page books will be assigned and only be passingly referenced in the exams.
I love Prof. Rivken-Fish, but the structure of the class is not clear at all. We made up assignments as the semester went on, she is currently restructuring it, but I still wish there was more clarity on expectations. The class itself is not difficult, there are a few reading responses and 1 paper, as well as two group projects.
A ton of reading and not very interesting. Regret taking this class for my gen ed because the tests are a lot of conceptualization. Took this for an easy class and it was way more work than excepted
I LOVE her. she is such a queen and is so passionate about her teachings. it really shows and makes the class so much more interesting and engaging. love her so so so much
She is so entertaining! She is clearly passionate about her lectures, which engages the class. You will have to buy 2-3 books for the class, but if you buy them within the first week, you can find them online for $5-6 each! Highly recommend for med anth minors, or for a gen ed class.
She is so nice but I thought this class would be focused on a variety of different cultures healthcare systems but it really only focuses on 3-4 different cultures. There is a lot of reading which you need to do for the exam. We only had recitation 6 times all semester. Make sure you do the discussion questions! She is very helpful in office hours
Pretty average professor to be honest. Class was probably more miserable than it should have been since it was an 8AM.
Dr. RF is very knowledgeable and passionate about the content, but extremely unorganized. Readings are not discussed in lecture at all and barely discussed in recitation, but tested in great detail. Success in this class 100% based on your TA and their grading. Dr RF offers multiple extra credit opportunities and keeps tests the same format.
I enjoyed this class so much! The content was very interesting, especially the content covered midway throughout the course. It is a very reading heavy class though and some readings show up more on the exams than others. Overall great class!
I would reccomend Anthropology 147 to anyone its a great class.
literally DO NOT take this class. I was hoping for an easy gen ed but this is anything but easy. you get SO much work each week and the exams are mostly written and harshly graded. Nobody I knew got an A, and this class gave me so much work. save yourself and don't take it.
The subject and lectures were interesting at times, but a majority of the grade came from the writing on tests and papers. which even though the TA's were nice and fought for us, she was very hardline in her restrictions to keep her tests harder and keep the grading harder.
Dont take this class with Rivkin-fish and Thrailkill, this class is very lecture heavy, assignments are never assigned on time, papers are annoying, pop quizzes in class. These two professors are very unorganized, and dont release assignments on time. This class is treated like a 400 level when it is a 200 level.
I took this class based on good reviews I had seen before, but taking this class along with Professor Thrailkill was incredibly disorganized. Pop quizzes throughout the semester and maybe the occasional interesting lecture. Outdated syllabus! I don't think I would take a class with them again, I would definitely pick a different professor.
I love Dr. R-F! This is my second class with R-F and I recommend her to everyone. This class is time consuming but it's appropriate for a 500 level course. She is super flexible and cares a lot for her students. There is a good amount of reading and grading is slow but she gives great feedback. If you want to learn more about ethnography take this!
The material for this class is very interesting if you are pre-med. However, the teaching team was very disorganized, and they assigned too many readings (one book per week sometimes). The class is listed as 3 credit hours, but it should be 4 CH because you are expected to go recitation every week on top of class. Not worth it.
ANTH 272 is extremely reading heavy and there are random pop quizzes in class that are based on very niche things in the readings. I did really enjoy the actual books that we read and professor Rivkin-Fish is very nice. I found the class to be somewhat frustrating because of how disorganized it was and sometimes it was unclear how topics related.
Dr. R-F is a super interesting person and she seemed to really know what she was talking about, however, she tends to be unorganized and can be difficult to reach outside of class. She is willing to be flexible and work with you once you contact her and is very understanding. Tests were easy if you actually read the material and reviewed slides.
I think that she is excellent at teaching and I value what I learned from her - however, her class was not structured well. She did not follow her syllabus, and so I was constantly stressed about my grade. Also, the class should have been 4 credit hours. I left each class pretty frustrated despite the content being great.
Dr. Rivkin-Fish is probably my favorite professor at UNC so far. She is so kind and it is abundantly evident she is passionate about her work. She gives good feedback and I love that the lectures are more conversation based, rather than a true "lecture." Very loose "deadlines" and will have your back if you participate in lectures! I love her
Honestly, dont really care for her. I've never taken an anthropology class and wouldn't recommend her for your first. She teaches fine but her slides are a mess. I don't think her exams are easy either. Shes so unorganized and i find it hard to differentiate what is important cause shes always yapping.
Prof RF is pretty good. Make sure to use the study guides and read the books she assigns. The class isn't too hard if you read and attended lectures. She records lectures. Make sure you get a good TA. She has medium-difficulty exams but studies. I recommend making flashcards. She can be a bit long winded at times but the class was interesting.
Dr. RF is very knowledgable and engaging during lectures. The lectures were also recorded and attendance was not required which was nice. There is a decent amount of reading, but I found all of it very interesting and not too difficult to apply to exams. In general, I did not feel overwhelmed by the workload or exams ever. Super interesting course.
I took this class sophomore year, and it was a great gateway into Med Anth. There are a lot of excellent readings, Rivkin-Fish's research is so cool, not too many exams, heavy focus on group discussion during recitation, this class is not an easy A but it is achievable if you do the readings, look over lecture slides, and go to most lectures
She is a great lecturer, and there is no such thing as a dumb question with her - a safe lecture environment. Grades depend on the TAs, there's a bunch of short 300 word essays you must do and "essay reviews" as well. The exams were a pain, but not too bad. Advice: KEEP UP WITH THE READINGS!!
I took this class because professor Rivkin-Fish was teaching it and she is so fascinating. Attendance is not required, but I would reccomend going so you can ensure you take good notes. What is on the slides is less important compared to what she says. Tests are high percentages but she gives a clear study guide and if you use it you will be fine.
She is a good lecturer, but the class is super boring. It is one of the easier triple-I you can take.
Lectures were extremely boring and unorganized. The entire teaching team was always talking over each other. Definitely not a fun class, but probably one of the easier triple i's.
Overall, the class was quite boring, but one of the better Triple-I's. She was my favorite of the three professors, but mostly bc the anthropology side of the course was the most interesting. She tries to connect with students and is available for office hours. The class was mostly participatory with a mid-term, final, and a large group project.
Worst Triple I ever!! do not ever take, it is the hardest one out there and the professors are super boring. Attendance is mandatory and the TA grades harsh.
She was the best of the three professors for this Triple-I. Her lecture content was the most interesting, and she seemed like the kindest. My biggest problem with this class is that you couldn't tell what you were supposed to take away from lectures and readings. Not a hard T-I though, you won't have to give too much effort, just do the readings.
she was the best out of the 3 tripleI teachers. lectures made sense, she was nice and not passive aggressive. however still boring. the class itself was a joke, but easier than others.
Prof. Rivkin-Fish was a good professor in a badly formatted class- all three of the professors for this class were kind and caring with students, but the class style is just not good in general. Her lectures were interesting and she LOVED hearing students' perspectives.
Rating for all 3 teachers here. Class itself is manageable in terms of readings and class structure. There are reading quizzes each week that are simple and a few lowest scores are dropped. Midterm and final were literally based off the guide provided. There were some issues with grading throughout the semester, but emailing the teachers fixed it.
I am saddened that Professor Rivkin-Fish's association with the terrible gen-ed that is IDST has given her a lower reputation. She is a phenomenal lecturer and an incredibly insightful person. The way she formulates her words is so thoughtful and expresses a deep level of reflection. The course itself was very easy as long as you did your readings!
I am currently in this class and I have made above a 90 on both midterms. Rivkin-Fish is an excellent professor who truly cares about her students. Attendance is not mandatory, however, make sure to keep up with the recordings and readings. There is a lot of readings but the midterm focuses on the concepts. tip: KEEP UP WITH READINGS AND LECTURES
Don't use her IDST class reviews to sum her up as a professor. ANTH 147 with Dr. Rivkin-Fish has been my favorite, most eye-opening class this semester. As long as you do the readings, the assignments and exams are completely manageable. Lectures are recorded and only recitations are mandatory. She's very caring and knowledgable. No regrets!
Super interesting class, a great lecturer, and the exams were very fair and reasonable. Lecture is optional and they are posted online, but you should go because they never run over 45 minutes in length, and they are super interesting.
Very easy and manageable class. Tests are designed to be doable. Lots of reading assignments but a manageable amount of work. Reading responses and recitation are annoying but chill. Lectures are optional and recorded.
Lots of reading, but incredible lectures!!!
Loved this class. Super interesting and the class was chill, exams are chill if u do all the readings and watch the films. Fw Fish fr
This is the 2nd class I have taken with her and she is an amazing professor who cares about her students and provides engaging, passionate lectures. It is relatively easy, but you definitely need to be prepared to do all the readings and know the terms for each exam. If you can understand and remember the analysis of the readings you will do well.
Pretty interesting class. TAs grade leniently for assignments (just follow directions). Even though its easy, exams can be a bit specific when asking about the material. Best way to study is to find a friend and talk through all the disc q's covered for the unit. Dr. Rivkin-Fish is very nice and accommodating!
I wasn't a personal fan of her lecture style, it was hard to stay engaged when I did go. It didn't help that it was an optional 5pm lecture.. if you won't force yourself to go it might not be the class for you. Tests were very specific in the short answers... read ALL the material. TA didn't grade ANY of our assignments until after the exam.
Great professor, boring class, Didn't attend or watch a single lecture, just study lectures and reading and you will be fine. Grading is heavily dependent on TA's though, pray you get a good one
Go to lectures, she appreciates students attending, and overall such a more engaging experience. She is charismatic and really just a wonderful professor. Honest and very well-versed. Passionate above all. Highly recommend
