She did have favorites (what she didnt know is that they made fun of her behind her back), took off absurd amount of points for tiny mistakes and for ideas based on her own opinion.
Ditto to most of what has been said; whoever says she's nice was her class pet.
the worst teacher i ever had. thinks she's better than everyone. only two kids got higher than a 70% on the first paper, and the rest failed..i was one of them. she horrible!!
HORRIBLE!!! She judges you from day one. It seems as though she likes to embarrass her students. Never once told me I was failing and should drop the class. To say the least, she didn't like me or basically anyone, and she didn't hide that

One of the worst professors I ever had. Took off points because students misspelled her name. Thinks her opinion is the right answer. Makes you feel stupid right to your face.
These critisims are written by students that couldn't read the directions to opening a bottle of aspirin much less write a quality university paper on any subject other than football or makeup. Dr. Schiavone is an intellegent, challenging, honest prof.

A little on the rude side. The class is a general Biography course and yet 5 out of 6 of the books were racially fueled books written by black authors, and although a few of them were good, I felt like I was in a black culture course. Also a poor dresser

Just like Lisa Douglas (Eva Gabor) on Green Acres, Schiavone is a NY city girl that came to the country.How come NY isn't where she would rather stay.Don't take her especially for ENG 310 Biography.Her answer is always the only right answer.

I thought that i would have a variety of people in biography, but it seems to me that the teacher is obsessed over black literature. I was wandering why couldn't we do a variety of different people such as, Thomas Jefferson or even Einstein.

Schiavone wasn't all that bad. Intro to the novel was one of the first Eng. classes I had. I felt like it prepared me for future classes with a heavy reading load. Shiavone was challenging but insightful.
Can sometimes be rude to students which makes them feel stupid. I learned a lot in her class, but she needs to work on her personality. Very hard on papers.
yes everyone is right, all she assigns are books on blacks, and it was just 102 english, i dropped it halfway through since the entire class got F's on the first paper, and i thought it was one of the best papers i had written. she's horrible, and mean!!

I had Baseball and Americn mythology.Come to learn, be challenged, and have intellectually stimulating discussions.I made A's because that is what I did. She was considerate of all students too.

All you do is read books by black authors who hate white people. If you expect to have other classes, a job or a life don't take this class because you have a reading due every single class period plus other assignments. This class is total bull***t.
She is a great professor. Her teaching style is very helpful. I learned alot in this class and I learned alot about myself. If you are about learning and understanding, you should take this woman. I appriciated all the assistance she provided.

Gave most of the class F's on the first paper. Required writing labs, conferences, etc. and gave most of us D's for our revisions. Why waste your time? She is difficult to understand and to work with.

My english was film based--so it sounds non threatening and interesting. i soon came to realize that when i signed up for this class, i should've been told all other aspects of my life were to be put on hold. it was horrible.
I hate this class! She thinks that everyone is instrested in what she is. She treats her students like High Schooler's! She wastes my time and is making my grade point drop. Don't take her ever! For anything!

It too me a few classes to get used to her, but now I think she is a very helpful and knwoledgeable professor. She doe snot give hard quizzes and I spent about 10 miutes on each paper and never got less than an A. So I'll give her an "A" as well

I am going to fail her class because of commas. She is very egoistic, hold you the entire class no matter what *has us get out work to do for five minutes or just rambles about herself. If you want to keep up the gpa AVOID at all costs.

Amazing! Who knew a teacher could be as terrible as her! She is not helpful, unclear and a loves to be difficult. If your views aren't her views, she fails you. Period.

Dr. Schiavone was a wonderful professor. I learned a lot from her class. I can see how some might not like her, just because they don't understand her. I liked her so much I took English 465, Rest. & 18th cent poetry and prosse which was challenging.

This teacher is very difficult to get along with. She will fail you for using commas wrong. She is a control freak, it urks me to have to walk into her class.
She was a little strange at times, but aren't we all? There is a lot of work in this class, but it is all easy work. She will help you in any way that she can and is concerned about students. Plus, she tends to extend deadlines, which helps a lot.
She is a good teacher, and yes, you have to know how to use commas correctly in an ENGLISH class. If you follow her instructions, you'll be fine. I loved her!

I must agree with the previous comments about how weird she is. The class itself wasn't that difficult, but she was never very helpful either. She would talk to my class like we were in 1st grade or something. I wouldn't take her again if it came down to it.

At first you would hate this class. It is a very difficult class to take with her. If you can stand it long enough it gets harder and you will learn what to do to pass no matter what. I'm going to take her class next semester.
Well she is out there in left field somewhere. I passed her class with a B and I worked really hard. She doesn't grade easy.. If possible, avoid her.. She's a pretty crappy teacher..
Dr. Schiavone is very odd at times, and extremely anal retentive (She took 5 pts. off a paper for spelling her name wrong) but, it's is an easy class if you don't mind doing the work. As long as you do the work and spell her name right, you'll pass.
Her class isnt easy or fun. She is very wierd and waits till the last minute to give any asignment sheets. You will have up to 8 or 9 papers to do on films that you have to pay to watch. Take her class and you will have to do more work than anyone would ever have to do in thier educational life.
Total paine i worked my but off trying to pass her class and the best i could do was a D and with that my chances of scholarships went bye bye. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!
tons of papers to write in this class, but she gives you examples from past students of exactly what to cover. its so easy to write the papers but their will be about a dozen and it will wear on you. especially if you have a hard schedule.
For the love of god fire her. She is the worst professor on campus. Never write about science in your papers. If you do she will force her beliefs. Apparently she was the one that invented everything so the science books are wrong. Got nailed on a paper for saying the sun was a star.
she has a good sense of humor. sure, you have to do a lot of writing, but you're going to have to get used to it sometime anyway. the papers aren't hard, they're really fun and you learn A L O T. she's a fun person and definately knows what she's talking about. a lady who deserves respect.
Dr.Schiavone really knows her stuff. Although you have to write 10 papers she tells you EVERYTHING you have to have. if you are LAZY then you won't do well. The stuff is not hard. She isn't weird she is hilarious. okay well she is a little off but still great!

She can be a little odd at times but she is a very good teacher. She knows her stuff, listen to her and take notes. Her midterm came straight from the notes and reading. She grades easily too.

Be on time! Take notes (tests come from notes). She is boring and strange but if you go to class and put forth an effort you will do fine.
She's somewhat squirrelly, but a very nice person. I didn't find her course particularly difficult. Not the best, but not the worst that Marshall had to offer.
Dr. Schiavone is a bit eccentric, but that keeps things interesting. You will definately learn how to write in 101, and punctuation is key. In 102, you will write several papers, but they all follow the same format. She is helpful if you ask questions. Once you learn what she wants, it's easy to get an A. Don't be lazy. Spell her name correctly.
I initially hated this class (she is rather odd turned), but by the end of the semester I was a better writer for it. If you nail the format she wants on the film papers it isn't that hard to get an A. She is very helpful outside of class.

I wasn't a fan of this class but if you have to take a literature class, then this may be one of the less demanding and easier. Just be sure to have the story for the day read because she quizzes everyday, plus TAKE NOTES!!! Especially when she gets into literature terms and such. Also, it's not a good idea to sit on the back row.
i am an A english student. i only pulled a c in this class. not b/c i didn't do well, but she hated me. she seems to base ALOT of her final grade on whether or not she likes you. do not question her, or she won't like you either. i fully believe that if i'd wrote someone else's name on my assignments, id have had an A. wouldn't take her again..ever
COME ON! I dont know about English 101, but in my class she was great. She is a bit on the odd side, but it makes class interesting. You have to give her exactly what she wants to get an A, but that goes without saying. If you give a math professor the wrong answer you dont get an A... Same thing here. Its a great class, and she teaches it well.

Read the book, take really good notes, even if she is talking nonsense, pretend to be taking notes. She is extremely nitpicky- spell her name right, head things properly, skip lines when she tells you too. I mean, she's an interesting lady, I talk to her at Java Joint sometimes, but she's just ridiculous and lonely.
Class was easy overall - easy quizzes on each story, short paper, etc. - but she absolutely will pick apart your test answers. Show up and take good notes and you'll still probably get a B. However, she was nice and helpful.
She grades very hard. Make sure you go to her class. She does pick favorites. If you can find another professor for the same class, do it. She is very hard and her homework is tedious and time consuming. Don't take it.

I was told it was going to be easy but you have to write like 10 different papers and she grades pretty hard, your stuff pretty much has to be PERFECT. If you suck at writing papers and just hate doing it this isn't the class for you. Her personality made me feel somewhat uncomfortable during class.
I liked the class. The stories were interesting. If you read ALL the stories and pay attention in the class discussion and speak out in class you will do fine. Her tests are a little difficult and she grades hard but overall I enjoyed the class!
She does grade hard but she's very fair and you come away being able to pick the stories apart that you previously would have had trouble understanding. I liked her class.

This teach is all over the place. Lectures are pointless on the exams, and she grades them so hard. I think she believes this is everyones top priority class when it obviously isnt. DONT TAKE, FOR GOODNESS SAKE
She is RANDOM. You go into class loving sports and think 'ahh fun'. No--she never mentions athletes of modern times. We ended up needing to know about religion and 'qualities of left handed ppl.' Every time I emailed she was rude and annoyed. Attendance is mandatory and she grades picky. Don't take this class!! I made a B, btw. It's that miserable.
Worst teacher at Marshall. Reading quizzes everyday and she continues to add books to the course even up til November. Never discusses athletes, only literature.
Sports Lit teacher. Class was harder than it should have been. Material used in class is awesome, but her teaching styles is very questionable. Plus she complains alot about people talking in class, and is very strict on attendence.

Wouldn't recommend at all. Sounds like a fun class on paper, but the class is horrible. It's all stuff from at least 40+ years ago. The Ali stuff was pretty cool though. Attendance is mandatory seeing you'll have a quiz everyday on a reading assignment from the class before. Don't dare look or speak to anyone else once the class starts either
She is very educated in what she is teaching, which I think is her downfall. Since she is so educated in the subject she believes that we should be able to know the stuff instantly. There is a quiz at the beginning of class every day, which I think is unfair due to the fact that some of the reading is confusing and needs clarification a quiz.
Boring class. Too may stories to read & they're not that interesting.
Do NOT take this professor. She made a class that sounded like fun (Good Stories) difficult simply because of how strict of a grader she is. Her test have lots of essay questions and she will take points off for just about ANYTHING. I would definitely not recommend this professor.

Do not take her, I'm an A English student and I struggled to pass the class. Shes incredibly rude and her opinion is the only one that matters. She made me uncomfortable in class shes very odd about sexual stuff in books.
Do NOT take her! The class was supposed to be an easy A and most came out with Cs. She was unnecessarily difficult and rude. Too much reading for one to possibly handle and her grading was extremely harsh. I would never recommend her.
This is the worst professor I have ever had in my life. If you get her, switch out as soon as possible. She marks off 10 points if you have a semi-colon in the wrong spot. She made me want to stab my eyes out in class, but if you missed she had an attitude, even with a university excuse. She is rude, opinionated, and biased. DO NOT TAKE HER.
I honestly think that she is one of these people who got her PHD in English and then said, "OH! now what do I do?" Her knowledge of English literature was impressive but seemed to have trouble passing it on. She graded WAY TOO HARD and never gave clear proofreading advice.

Okay, everyone talked about how she is a very difficult grader, this is SO true. She isn't very specific on what she takes off points for so ASK! She gets upset when people don't follow directions to a T. If english isn't your strong suit, like me, get a professor that isn't aggravated by "dumb" questions. Worst grading criteria ever.
I mean one sentence in a 500 + page book makes a sexual reference and she spends the whole class (yes the WHOLE class period) talking about it.
She is "different" & she has very high expectations for her students. But as I read through past reviews, I was struck by the poor grammar and spelling of so many Marshall students, so I can see how frustrated Dr. Schiavone was when reading papers and trying to teach us how to be literate. Dr. Schiavone 's class is extremely tough! She does not make it clear what you are going to be tested on, her exams are confusing, there is A LOT of reading material and she expects you to read all 40 some pages before your next class meeting. If you go to her office she will try to help you but her advice has never helped. Do not take her... EVER!
She was overly controlling of the classroom and treated us as middle schoolers. Will keep you in class longer than time allotted. 2 absences only. She is the most particular and difficult teachergrader I've ever had. The tests won't be easy at all. So particular that it becomes the running joke of the class. SAVE YOURSELF FROM THIS, DONT TAKE HER
The hardest class I have had so far. She will treat you like children but expect perfect work. Hardest and most particular grader I have ever had. I would not take her if I was you. I learned nothing.
Dr. Shiavone is the nightmare professor that students talk about in college. Do not, I repeat, do not take her class. She is a tough grader and her tests are absolutely ridiculous. She has no respect for her students, and she will continually talk down to you.

Dr. Schiavone is kind hearted and excellent professor. If you put the time and the effort into her assignments and demonstrate that you care, she'll go out of her way to ensure that you're learning the material. I highly recommend her.
Dr. Schiavone was a nightmare but I did learn a few things. She has some days that are good but most of the time beware of her wrath. She is the toughest grader I have ever seen and will tell you to correct something and then it still be wrong the next time she sees it.
I used the tag hilarious because half of the time she was so disrespectful, I thought it was a joke. She embarrassed me in front of the whole class multiple times if I didn't know the answer to a question. She even laughed at one of my papers when she was going over it with me in her office. Schiavone is rude and egotistical. Do not take her class!
I honestly didn't like or dislike Dr. Schiavone. I will admit she was rough at times and could be sassy, but if you just listen and follow what she says and stay on her good sid she will make sure you succeed in getting a good grade. I don't think her intentions are to be rude, but I could be wrong for some people.
She treats you like a third grader but then tells you its your responsibility when she neglects to give you all the information to pass the class. Surprise quizzes and presentations that are NOWHERE on the syllabus. She mentions things for the first time a week before theyre due. She also quizzes you on the book even if no one bought it yet
Is unnecessarily tough. Had for my first English class in college. One month into the year she told I needed to take college seriously or drop out. Also accused me on not going to the writing center for help. When I showed her the receipt with the writing center notes on it, she said I must have forged it. Horrible person/ professor.
Professor Schiavone runs a tough class, but using Unstuck study alongside the textbook really helped me stay on top of the material. Definitely attend class and utilize the writing center.
