She is absolutely horrible. She wastes the class time by making everyone go around the room and say what they think about a topic.Hello there's 50 people, so it takes about an hour or so for everyone to talk. Her lectures are bad,she goes way too fast and doesn't give you a chance to see the overhead.Don't take her.

scatter brain. doesnt have any real direction in the class. shes obviously smart but does not know how to teach.
thisclass is alright i wouldnt highly recommend it but it is tolerable i think she is a feminist cause all she ever talks about is womensrights and her work with the homeless this class might not be to bad if u could take it a monday wednesday friday to shorten the classes for your GER but the hour and fifteenmin classes make me want to kill myself
She is very nice, yet her classes are taken up talking about pointless things not relating to the subject, ONLY TWO TESTS AND A FINAL and the tests are not gone over at all. I would not take her.
No concept of teaching a course. Not easy to please. NOT ORGANIZED! If I heard about the homeless one more time, I think I might have screammed!
Confusing is one word I would use to describe the lectures.
Very confusing, lots of little assignments. Talks about how great Santa Barbra is at least once per class. Seems like she thinks this is our ONLY class. Gave us pages and pages of assignments to do over Spring Break because she didnt want us to "forget" about the class. Sorry I wasn't even in the country and I wasnt going to do homework on the beac
She thinks way too highly of herself and the class. If I didn't need it to keep my health insurance I would have dropped it. Tooooo many assignments, read 500 pages in a week? Yeah right lady. Thinks her class is the only one we're taking. Also very very rude when you have to ask her a question about an assignment or class in general. DONT TAKE!
awesome teacher
Extremely hard for an intro professor. Have three tests and 3 papers (graded very hard) and tests are pretty hard too. She does talk about the Homeless a lot too so if you are interested in that she will be great for you if not then be ready to listen to her talk about the homeless atleast onece per class. If she can fit it into her discussion she
Really nice and has clear lectures and disccussions. I liked the way people are asked to participate, and didn't mind the California examples. She is very knowledgable and improves the level of classes around here.
Really liked class and lecture.
I hate her class
essays every week but that wasnt bad... never clear on what exactly she wanted... hard to do what she really wanted when you figured it out... final not so bad... actually it was pretty easy.. if you asked for help she was always willing to help.. always willing to find a way to make you get a better grade... very nce person...
Great Class - very helpful professor - goes out of her way for students. Tough - but worth it.
Poor teaching skills impede any potential interest for students. Sometimes rather rude, and very non-descriptive on assignments. Was not ever sure whether I was doing anything correctly, and the readings were terrible. Would not ever take again.
Loved the class and the prof. Only two papers and some extra credit. Really knows her stuff - lectures more like discussions.
Took her for my first year seminar on homeless people great class. got to know her students and went out of her way to plan a shelter visits. Alot of reading but you could easily find answers without actually doing the reading. i would reccomend taking her.
Great pro. the best would take her again. Lot of written assignments, no test or quizzes. great class if you like to read and write, and who can't do that?
Lots of reading and writing, no exams. Be prepared to speak in class a lot. Seven minute final presentation-alone. She expects 100% effort and will let you know if she isn't getting it. Hard class, but if you are willing to do the work, it's worth it- you will learn a lot.
great class first day a written assignment was due for the following class, so you must get all 5 or 6 books. doesnt accept late assignments. must fill out a contract for it. lots of reading and writing. no test or quizzes. overall great class
Professor Wakin is an amazing professor, I suggest anyone to take her homelessness class. She combines experiences with homelessness in addition to readings. There are a lot of readings and there is a lot of work but she lets everyone know that they need to be dedicated the first day of class. She is passionate and it shines through in her teaching
Best professor and advisor ever. She will help you, you just have to meet her half way
Very difficult
Probably the best professor that I've had at this university! She's amazing and passionate about her work and her students.
She is amazing! Even though the amount of work can get a little overwhelming it is worth it because you will learn a lot. She is also very good at getting back to students and her feedbacks are great. She is willing to work with students but you will have to work for a good grade. I would definitely take her again.
I took Professor Wakin for Social Inequality and she nitpicks everything and takes points off for it. Her grading criteria is terrible, you won't know what is required of you until you do two of each assignment and even then she'll nitpick your work.
Easily the worst professor I've ever had. Do not take her or you risk getting a bad grade for literally no reason. I barely got a B. Assignment criteria is extremely vague and even when you do everything the way she wants she takes points off for stupid things.
Took her online class. So I took her class twice. Her expectations are ridiculous. She does take points off for no reason. And ohh so much reading. I wouldn't recommend taking her.
Wouldn't recommend. Tough grader. Will take points off for no reason. And doesn't leave any feedback for why. Her expectations are very unclear. Lots and LOTS of reading! Wants lengthy answers for homework assignments. Don't expect a 100 on an assignment she states that she rarely gives out A's.
She is very unclear of what she wants and does not help when you ask for it. For a Soci 200 class, she expects the work of a 400/500 class. Frustrated to say the least! My first C ever!
she is very unclear as to what she wants from her students. She doesn't give good feedback if she gives any at all. The amount of work she assigns is ridiculous, & I never complain about a workload. I had such high hopes for this class, but it turned out to be the most difficult and anxiety ridden course I have taken in my 4 years of college.
I found this professor to be very unclear as to what she was looking for and graded very tough. It is hard to feel successful when you are unclear of the expectations of a professor who does not tell you what she is looking for or a guide to help you. Communication was limited and took a good amount of time for her to get back to students.
She knows what she is reaching. But is really tough grader.
I really did not think the way she ran the course was fair. Each summary was graded 1 out of 10 and they were due every other week. It was impossible to get a 10/10 on her essays because she picked every little thing apart. I handed everything in on time and worked hard in this 200 level class. There were not many ways to bring up your grade.
She is a really good professor. Yes she is a tough grader but it is only to make you a better student! Take her!
She give allot of reading. And give good feedback on short essay to make the next essay be better. She care for student but gives allot of work. And she is really passionate of what she teaches.
Unclear about grading requirements. Grades too harsh for the lack of a rubric she provides. Comments on assignments are misleading and doesn't reflect on what she actually wants for her assignments. Places due dates in the middle of the day, so be careful. Awful, long and boring readings that don't teach any material. Never again.
It will feel like no matter how hard you work on a paper a high grade is impossible. Even if what you wrote is three times the required length. Nitpicking is her specialty. Grading criteria are vague and don't reflect what she ACTUALLY wants. I can't even imagine anyone getting more than a 9/10 on ANY paper. Doesn't seem possible to get above a B
Awful professor. Dont expect to receive anything above an 80, if that even happens. It is IMPOSSIBLE to ever get full credit on any assignments. She has taken points off of assignments because her option doesnt align with my own. Her rubric is useless. Dont take her
Terrible professor. In my four years at BSU I have never had a professor force their opinions on myself like her, if your opinion doesn't align with hers be prepared. She will take points off assignments if she doesn't agree with you. Also never gives full credit for ANYTHING, which is shocking because she doesn't provide an adequate rubric.
It was 40 pages of in-depth weekly readings. After that for the online course its one discussion and one 3-page paper due every two weeks so a total of 8 each for the semester. This is the first class I have ever received a B for, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET FULL CREDIT FOR THE PAPER. No feed back at all, but discussions are easy.
She offers great feedback and cares about her students.
The readings were actually cool for this class and lectures good.
Good material, kind and approachable. Writing heavy but good feedback.
Love the material. Really cares about students.
Great and fun class. Good readings and fun outside assignments. This Prof. cares about students and helps you improve on writing.
Amazingly helpful. So kind and approachable. Good class.
This class is interesting - even online. This prof actually wrote one of the books - which is cool! Would definitely recommend.
I've never had a worse educational experience. Dealing with her was like dealing with a little kid, if that little kid had the entitlement of a PhD. Learned nothing, because she actively didn't teach. We just read, and she put down our work, and held back A's and compliments like they were fighting off the coronavirus. Zero stars.
Loved this class. Readings not too bad, lectures good - at your own pace. She made online learning fun.
This class has one book, then just online stuff. It's not bad + she's good on grading and feedback. You know where you stand.
Decent readings for this class + interesting questions. I never thought about homelessness like this - she makes it accessible. Super-nice too!
Fast grader - you won't wait forever and will know where you stand. Answers questions right away + is always helpful and supports students.
Good material - not boring. You always know where you stand with your grade and she answers questions immediately.
Great books and videos and a super-nice instructor. Not so easy but so worth it.
Totally enjoyable material, clear and fast grading, and extra credit opportunities. She is understanding and always answered all of my questions.
Dr. Wakin's class here is far better than her previous ones, mostly since now she adds voiceovers for her powerpoints. You have to do short discussion board posts, and about an essay a week. It is pretty easy to handle, no final paper or exam. If you miss an essay or DB post, you can submit one of each later for full credit. Good feedback is given.
This class was one of the best I have ever taken - anywhere. There is a ton of good material - most of it cheap or easy to access - and interesting!! She gives a lot of comments on writing and is nice and considerate about grading - I totally appreciated it with everything going on.
This class was great - even in a pandemic. She was friendly, communicated with us all the time - and you always knew where you stood with the grades. You get the sense that she cares about the class and everyone in it.
I think this class is great in person. We do group work and get help with assignments. I know my grade and what is expected.
She was so kind and flexible with us. It helped so much. The book was short and not bad to read. Would take her again.
Class ended up being fun - even with a mask. Great discussions, not boring.
Best class so far at this school.
I've taken dr. wakin for two classes. She is a very tough grader, my first class with her i did not do so well, but this time i knew how she worked and im leaving with an a+. Material is interesting and well chosen, very eye opening class. Def need to work for it, but its worth it. Very nice and understanding and cares about her students.
Even if you do the assignment she wont give you credit if it isnt exactly how she expects it. She doesnt help her student succeed or tries to understand.
She does quizzes and allows for extra credit. The grading is fair with lots of help. Good class.
I took this very low-level course as part of my sociology minor and it consisted of a lot of reading from three different books, a lot of writing, and a lot of critiquing.
This class was in person and the discussions were fun. Everybody talked. You have essays but the grades are pretty easy and clear. You know what you're getting.
I liked the fact that we can choose what we read and that we get comments every time.
The class was fun and kind of easy because you choose what to read from one book. You can turn in late papers and a short final.
This professor is so passionate about what she does. She's a great teacher and a good person. Tough grader though but allows two late papers and two late participation papers due at the end of the semester. Class discussions were interesting and sometimes fun. Show up, do your work, don't procrastinate, ask questions and you'll pass.
Honestly, this class was just meh. There are 4 discussion post, 4 essays, and a final paper, all of which take time but if you read the material it is fairly easy. She gives you many opportunities to make up work. If you need credits and an easy class that does not take up too much time and is low in stress, I would recommend this one.
I got a lot out of this class and I loved the flexibility. She gives good comments on the papers and is a pretty generous grader. You can turn in late work and get credit. There is some research on the final paper but you pick your own topic. There is reading and a lot of emails but I liked it - it kept me on track.
Professor wakin is the best. Very caring about her students and passionate about what she teaches. Tough grader but its nice to interact with people who believe in you and want to bring out the best in you. Amazing lectures too.
She is a caring professor. With her direction she is not very detailed they are pretty general directions was simple for me to understand.I feel like I was following what she was expecting and taking related something that reasonates with topics of the chapter. She would also gives me a 0 because of how I started my Introduction and conclusion.
Prof. Wakin actually grades/annotates your papers! Her comments were thoughtful/encouraging throughout the semester, at least in my opinion. I also really enjoyed the textbook she selected. However, there's a good chunk of writing (~20 pages in total). She gives "late assignment" tickets, though. Definitely challenging, but fun and understanding!
Horrible do not ever take her if you have a choice. She is a nice person but an awful professor. Does not give clear expectations at all or on the rubric. She takes off so many points on every grade even if you followed every guideline. Impossible to get all points or above an 80 on each assignment. Offers no help and fails to go over anything.
I thought this was a great class to get me ready for my capstone. I liked the experiments outside of class and the energy we all put into our projects. It wasn't easy but there were a lot of points just for attendance.
wakin is the best. really doesnt get any better this 10/10
Nice, and a fast responder. I liked choosing my own topic and the help with papers. The format was easy to understand. It was a great class!!
Good professor. We do get to go on a field trip. Grades by a couple essays.
hardest grader ever your work needs to be literally perfect to get a 10/10. readings are very long and hard to understand, i wouldn't reccommend.
This is genuinely the worst professor I've ever had at BSU. Like others have said before, she grades based on personal beliefs and very harshly. I took her online intro to sociology class and received a horrible grade from missing just 1 assignment. I would have gotten away with a B if she had graded my other assignments fairly. Doesn't accommodate
Loved this class. Easy to understand assignments and good, consistent attention. Great class - one of the best so far!
This is a good class. You choose what to write about and get good directions. The readings were online too - nothing to buy - so that was great!!
I liked the comments for this class. Great online class because it's easy to follow. Tons of comments but helpful too.
Great online discussions and a lot of good information. I liked choosing my own topic. Not completely easy but a really good class - it is a subject of interest to me and I learned a lot from this. She actually wrote the book too so she can answer any question.
No textbook to buy - yeah!!! Great narrated lectures and good, interesting stuff - I never took sociology but I like this.. Flexible assignments and extra credit.
I love her. She is so interesting and we go on field trips. She is a tough grader but she is very helpful.
awful professor DO NOTTAKE
Great class, easy to follow.
I think this is one of the best BSU classes. We took a field trip and saw homelessness up close. That was my favorite part. Good class discussions too.
The class readings are free and she emails every week with comments and gives individual comments and grades.
