One word: idiot. She doesn't know the difference b/t oxidation and reduction -- a student had to tell her in lecture. She'd be better off taking chem1a rather than teaching it.
She has to be smarter than that though she did write the lab manual that has to stand for something. But I think that her ability in teaching lacks. I didn't learn much from her.
she is an awesome teacher who makes everything very easy. she's funny and adorable! she sayd SUPER.
Absolutely horrible. While it's understood that lectures can't possibly cover everything required for full comprehension, SOMETHING still has to be covered. Does nothing to clarify if you talk to her personally, and online homework is TERRIBLE. Avoid!
Lectures not helpful when pertaining to the exams. Picks topics to lecture about that are random, not a good lecturer, I didn't get much out of it. Exams not easy to understand.
Her rubric for grading exams are ridiculous, even my GSI thought it was too hard. Lectures are not very helpful either.
grading scale is ridiculous
Dr. Douskey is very helpful. Don't be afraid to ask her questions. Even though people think she's too focused on "Unit Topics", for me it makes more sense that way. Her lectures are so adorable too!
Avoid her if you can. Grding system is ridicuolus, and you can't really trust her as a professor, since students often correct her math in class. If you like weird chem problems with cows (yes, the moooooo kind)instead of mols as units, you will like her.
Horrible teaching. She tries to win students' sympathies; don't fall for it. Lectures do not pretain to her tests. Grading scale is crazy. Online hw is horrible because it literally takes hours. Wish I took chem 1st sem... that or shot myself. A def NO.
WOW! Its GEMERAL CHEMISTRY, not "lots talk about RANDOM **** (i.e fuel cells, cows and how they fart => global warming)." Teaches you stuff the day of the test, and wants you to go home and study it!!WOW!Test are difficult but do-able. 1st se
She sucks at explaining and her lectures are confusing~ The midterms were stupid like others have said. The SLC instructors were way more helpful then she is.
if you're obsessed with grades, you won't like her.
lectures don't cover material on tests
Lecture's may not be captivating, but gets the material across. However, her midterms are questionable. Even more dubious is her grading policy. Douskey seems to believe that in order to excel at teaching, a relatively low number of A's must be given.
Her midterms are completely independent from ANY assigned homework she gives. Lecture are vague and lacking depth. Material in midterm are barely spoken about in lecture.. AVOID AT ALL COST IF YOU WANT AT least a B in Chem 1a.
pay attention to lectures because a lot of the midterm questions are examples she gives in class. you need to read your book. online homework is time consuming at times, it is a chem course afterall.
One of the worst teachers I've had. She uses analogies to explain fundamental concepts and focuses on being able to solve problems rather than understand concepts. Also the class had 4 midterms, 2 lab write-ups, 2 quizzes/week, a project, and a final.
Her homeworks are not representative of her tests. You HAVE to do the reading because she puts things on tests she doesn't discuss in lecture. Her lectures are not very clear and can be a bit boring. There are themes, which focuses too much on one topic.
She made me not want to be a chem major anymore. She depended way too much on the online material to teach us the course, and yet never used any homework-like questions on the tests. She played favorites (said she like the afternoon class more).
Sad. Material is off-topic, tests are irrelevant; fails to address student concerns on the boards, comes off as mean and unapproachable. First chemistry course where I felt like I didn't want to study chemistry anymore.
Actually she doesn't just teach for the numbers and calculations but even she said herself she likes to teach material qualitatively. Yah the homework doesn't link up well with exams but I'm just glad I'm learning, online hw is different, fun, interesting
AVOID HER IF YOU CAN!!
I was considering taking 1B after this class, but now I'm not so sure anymore. She made my experience here horrible; barely personable, nice only to selective people, never addresses anything that involves grading or logistics. Teaching is uninformative.
Sorry, but I signed up for Chemistry, not "listen to Douskey talk about environmental issues and how great her husband is." My mistake.
I liked it more than high school chem. Homework didn't help, labs ended early, midterms sort of hard, final was easy.
RUN! RUN AWAY AND NEVER RETURN. DOUSKEY IS REALLY BAD. Her test are unfair and she gives really shallow lectures. She's not hard but she expects you to know stuff that she doesn't lecture on.
unfair tests, okay lecturer. if you don't memorize her lectures, even if you know your chemistry you will not get an A. NOT a class for chem majors, that's for sure. the class annoyed me a lot. i didn't go much. =D
midterms were hard. final was easy. lectures are annoying and not helpful. she tries to tie a lot of real life concepts in what she is teaching and it becomes time-consuming and not relevant to what we need to know.
She is horrible. On the day of the test, she tought up new material which was on the midterm later that same day. Absolutely awful professor and her class is harder then the other chem classes
lectures were ok.... midterms were hard, lots of concept rather than calculation. final was easy, jus a collection of midterm. homework is online... and not very fun. only good thing was the lectures were online.
her lectures are okay. her tests and grading systems are not. the material would be much more fun if taught by another professor. the class is unnecessarily time consuimg.
Ok, I know a lot of people have been really hard on Dr. Douskey. She has hard tests, yes but you can make up for them through homeworks and labs. Her lectures were fun and easy to understand, she tried her best to know student's names. :-)
I have many questions about this class and this professor~ Why did she always make the midterm reviews on the days we took midterms? Why didn't she explain more about the questions like the ones in our midterms? Did she always suppose we should kn
Her Chemistry analogies were ineffective at best, her in class discussions of the quizes served to put the class to sleep-Plenty of BS all around. Strict on grading-very few A's and B's-Alot of her test questions came from her BS lectures, so go to class.
Possibly the most frustrating class I've ever taken. She oversimplifies difficult concepts and will not give you a good foundation of chem. Not professor material, too vengeful and not understanding at all. AVOID HER EVEN IF IT MEANS DELAYING CHEM!!!!!
nice professor, retarded exams, grades harder than average, must actually listen to lecture the day of midterms (4 mt, 1 final)
Lecture notes only scratch the surface of whats on the exams. Teacher is not a very charismatic speaker. Honestly, this class was not "Berkeley-level quality."
Overall very good and helpful. The only drawback was she tried to oversimplify things during lecture, and when it came to the tests, all we had were those simple ideas in our head, which didn't help us on the test. The demos were great!!
HORRIBLE! lectures seem so much easier than tests, no curve, and she tries so hard to be the fun teacher! tries to tie in global issues- that didnt work. tests were ok, but you have to read everything and be at all lectures! lots of homework online
She's not the easiest professor, but she's very helpful and mostly clear. I thought she was a good teacher... a lot better than my physics professors! :P
I went to all the lectures, did well on the labs and homeworks, but performed terribly on the exams! She doesnt teach to her difficult exams, she tries to be fun but makes the course confusing. Not Berkeley quality at all! Don't take Chem 1A with Douskey!
Douskey is a second rate professor that somehow weasled her way into a job at one of the best schools in the country. Her lectures are simplistic and ineffective and the tests contained poorly covered material.I am embarassed to say she teaches lat at Ca
I tried. I really did. Her lectures were horrible, she'll help you only if you ask the right questions, her grading scale deviates from one established 5 years ago. May be fun to some, but to a lot of people, she's a pretty bad professor.
Although i found the class easy because i had a great High school teacher. I found many of her explanations were ineffective and left students confused and lost.
Poor... Not only does the class sorta suck, so does her grading scale (i.e. a B is 810-890 points). It is basically impossible to get a B+ making you want to give up before the final even arrives! Not a good experience =(
She focuses exclusively on her lectures when looking for exam material, and luckily they are for the most part clear and comprehensible. Be able to explain the chemistry behind her umbrella topics (Acid Rain, Stars, etc.) and you'll do fine. Fun class.
This class was extremely difficult. She focused main on her big picture concepts that were hard to connect to the material.
oh, what a ****bag
very lecture-based...i advise anyone who is taking her class...plz review her notes and watch the lect again online...will be helpful...
She thinks she definitely smarter than she is. I guess she grades hard to justify the fact that she can't teach anything
She is a very horrible professor. i didn't like her lectures, i didn't like her grading, i didn't like the fact that she gave us 4 midterms and a final, and i just didn't like her!!!!
Not a bad prof. Teaches whats on the exam and is clear and gives simplistic lectures on what is a simple subject. Exams are fair and WRITTEN BY THE DEPT for those on here who complained about that. Take a diff. prof you'll get the same exams.
I give Douskey an F-. The class was very easy but her grading scale is ridiculous and she grades poorly.
This professor was the worst by far I have had at Berkeley. The grading system was outrageous 890-899 was B-.......900-910 was A- The MTs were completely lecture oriented- your grade came down to memorizing lectures, not concepts.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS~ SHES A BI*cH
i don't know what the fuss is about she's cool.

The class was fun with a lot of demos. The exams were decent, on the hard side. She is pretty approachable, and nice.
Douskey is not a horibble teacher. She just made it so that there was no extra credit and that you actually had to do WORK to get an A in Chem 1A. Basically, a lot of disgruntled pre-meds have been vetting their anger out on her. I got an A with her, it wasn't easy, but it is doable. She's not one of those people who spoonfeeds.
Prof. Douskey is a great lecturer. She taught the class at a good pace, making sure to emphasize important points of Chem. She had great demos for those visual learners. Take her class if you need to pass Chem 1A because she will teach you what you need to know.
her lectures are really clear, but they are in NO WAY helpful in understanding the material. the problem sets, labs, etc are MUCH harder than her slow, retarded lectures. and the way she has the GSIs grade things is despicable and discouraging. this woman annoys me for so many reasons. try to avoid her if you can.
She's really unreasonable and outright unfair with grading and tests. You make one stupid mistake and you loose 10/100 points... She is the worse chem teacher ever and everything is all unorganized and up in the air. Her lectures differ from labs, homework, tests, etc. Stay as far away from her as possible. She is effing insane.
not a very good prof at all, her lectures are too simplistic and chock full of cutesy pie demos that we don't really need. grading, esp for lab reports, are ridiculously difficult and her lectures aren't much help at all for the hw's labs and tests. i want cohen back
Everyone hated her, but I thought she was great. She taught the basic concepts well, and her tests matched her lectures. She really made me enjoy Chem and clarified a lot of concepts.
The person below me is an @$$hole. she was not that bad. these guys want to get an easy A by a professor that gives them the answers. shes a REALLY nice person and deserves a lot of slack.
How many different ways can you say she sucked in less than 350 characters? She suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd.
what a waste of a semester, the class is a joke. a useless LECTURER. avoid her if you can, unf if u are in the college of chem and she's teaching, tough luck. i still don't understand why the college gave us such a usless teacher. all the useful information could be fit into 2 weeks by someone competent. also the grading is moronic
No one's questioning her niceness. That's not what's being graded here. She was by far the most incompetent instructor I have ever had, and chem 4B teaches nothing outside of APchem/bio. Chembio majors, avoid this class like the plague. You'll be much better off taking 105 instead.
What can I say about Douskey... well, she's nice, but if you want to learn ANYTHING from this class, try reading the book instead of going to class.
Her lectures are easy to understand but not at Chem 4b level. I was extremely disappointed by this professor. She doesn't deserve to teach at the most prestigious college of chemistry in the nation. Her grading scheme is outright unreasonable and makes completely no sense.
This is one of those deals where the lectures are sort of a supplement to reading the book, and not the other way around. And I tended to fall asleep during that time anyways. The lectures are clear and simple enough, though.
Douskey = ****ty
She had very clear boardwork; her lectures were easy to understand and follow. Lecture notes were all you needed to study for her tests. She had a harsh grading system, which took off lots of points for small things. However, the grading system was fair in that it was stadardized and equally harsh to everyone. She was friendly and helpful in OH.
sucks
Pretty decent professor. Lectures were kind of simple compared to information in text. Exams were fairly easy as long as you understand the material. But you must work kind of fast on the exams and watch out for careless errors. Homework grading was unreasonable. Effort should count more.
Horrible grading scale, and when I took it (Spr 2006) the GSIs were mostly horrible as well. Grading is very arbitrary. Being told one thing and graded in the totally opposite manner, I can say what she says is BS. The material is easy Chem 1A stuff. Tests are straight-forward. Remember, fight for the points they arbitrarily take away!!
God I can't believe she's teaching again this year. Worst lecturer I ever had. Refused to give out grading system until a month before class ended, no one knew what was going on, the labs were terrible, even Dante said the class was not worth taking anymore. It's unfairly biased against o-chem ppl cuz things are done differently. TAKE 105 as subs
Sucks
Reasonably clear lectures. Moderately difficult tests. Unreasonable grading of homework.
She did a fairly good job of teaching. Her lectures were reasonably clear, and she made an attempt to tie things in with actual examples, although some of her examples were poorly executed. However, the material seemed too general, and we probably could have finished everything in half the time, or gone more in depth. Very easy tests.
It seemed like her lectures and the exams were COMPLETELY different from the labs and the homework. The difficulty level of the lectures and tests were really really really simple compared to the homework and labs ( I spent >10 hours a week on homework and labs); also, grading is VERY harsh. Tests are easy but harsh grading KILLS.
Her lectures are horrible and have nothing to do with the midterms. The lab manual is completely awful and she refuses to update it, so the labs are completely confusing and pointless. This class was COMPLETELY awful.
Her Tests were just like the homework...just go over the hw problems the night before and you will be alright, but make sure you understand the material. TEN TIMES BETTER THAN HENDERSON, the other 4B teacher my semester.
Douskey's lectures were clear but they were too simple compared to what we were reading in the texts. The tests were based a lot on the lectures so they were easy and did not reflect the difficulty of the HW from the text. My least favorite aspect of the class was the labs which made me feel clumsy and stupid, but I enjoyed the special project.
Chem 4B is a hard class, but studying definitely pays off. Douskey is friendly and approachable. Her tests are fair. Labs are somewhat challenging. It is essential to ask for help if unsure about concepts.
The lab manual was poorly written, the lectures were mediocre, and the class barely tolerable, even for Chem majors.
not that hard. the chem4a profs were way better. lectures were disorganized and poorly explained, but tests arent that hard. doesnt like theory or math. the special project is pretty cool. isnt that hard.
Don't attend lectures. She can't teach...
Focuses on general, overall learning instead of making you memorize equations. I would suggest going to class instead of reading the book.
Let me be clear. I'm sure she's an extremely nice person, and she tries very hard. The problem is that the material she teaches isn't very difficult. In fact, it could have been taught in about a tenth of the time. Her lectures are dry, and there is very little content. She tests over what she teaches- but she isn't that good at explaining.
One of the nicest lecturers on campus; she was always helpful in OH. Lectures were informative and entertaining. While she could have taken much less time with the material, with more time it was given a chance to sink in. Overall really good, I would say.
I never thought was was nice. Her lectures are unnecessarily long and tedious, and she doesnt really care about the students.
She's really into teaching and the theory of it... except that she tries too hard. Makes classes mandatory by iClicker, which I thought was a stupid system, because her lectures could've been easily skipped. Materials are not hard (she tries to start from very beginning, understandably). but her test Qs border can be trivial, trickily stupid
Completely useless class with completely useless professor.
Douskey had good intentions, but was a hit-or-miss. Didn't explain things well (went through powerpoint, wrote on the board, and rambled on about how we should think). Not helpful when you want her to explain concepts without corny analogies. Exams are easy but you're pressed for time and careless mistakes are costly. As I said, she's a hit-or-miss
She wanted us to think like chemists by thinking about why everything's happening. That's good. Despite her wants, however, she was a poor instructor. Didn't teach, found herself unable to explain deep concepts. Learning came from unhelpful textbooks. Only helpful for special project. "Easy" tests, but unreasonable grading. Unreasonable workload.
I loved Douskey. She was funny, explained concepts well enough to be grasped, and made the field of analytical chemistry really interesting! Grading was fair, and tests really test you on what was presented in class and not some random nonsense from nowhere. Brilliant!
Good instructor. She is very open and helpful during office hours.
This class won't be too hard if you actually use the book and do practice problems. I felt that the textbook helped more than lectures. It is unfortunate though how it is almost mandatory to attend lectures as there are i-clicker quizzes every so often. Oh well, it's not like you can choose your professor for Chem 1A.
Professor Douskey was really strange, durring lecture she would occasionally make jokes which were most times funny. She is definitely not as formal durring lecture as most other professors. I liked that she is was so weird and zany.
For a one-unit class, the workload is ridiculous. The lab reports take far too much time and are worth a lot of points. Going to the lecture is pointless because she just goes into a lot of detail about stuff the lab manual covers. There is an irrelevant poster project, and a newly instituted final exam. Not worth taking this class.
She's funny, informative, and loves to engage students. She tries to keep things interesting with jokes and frequent demos. The concepts themselves were not very difficult or plentiful, but that just meant you could sit back and enjoy her teaching more.
In my opinion, analytical chemistry is a very boring chemistry subject to teach. Yet she does it justice by hitting all the key points. She specializes in active learning, by doing Flipped Fridays, where we do worksheets instead of listening. These are very helpful for the exams, which were easy if you studied her past tests and paid attention.
Great lecturer, kinda babies her students, but is really clear.
Great lecturer and very engaging. Her tests were slightly tricky, but if you kept up with the lectures and homework, you did well. She is very passionate about the material and goes out of her way to help you as much as she can. Loved her enthusiasm.
My favorite prof in the whole wide world. She might have cried at the Florence and the Machine concert, but I feel like crying after every lecture because they are so beautiful. Prof. Douskey, if you're reading this, pls be my best frand. WE LOVE YOU. 3 3 3 Enjoy your gourmet tea and dorm room moonshine.
I actually enjoyed her class even more than the regular Chem lecture
She's got 1 lecture a week, you go pretty much to randomly click your iClicker and then leave. You never interact with her. The GSI is everything - get a good one and switch early if needed. There's a formal lab report but the average was low so they had us edit it and turn it in again. There's a test - super easy, exactly like her practice.
Great professor and amazing lecturer! Very funny and explained the material clearly. Added humor into the lectures to keep students engaged and included many demonstrations. I learned more from this class than the regular Chem 1A lectures, and ended up leaving with a greater appreciation for chemistry.
Douskey is a cute lady, and tries to make lectures fun and engaging, but unfortunately they can still end up being pretty boring. Only really went for iclicker credit. Prelabs and lab reports can be time consuming but are not too difficult and the lab exam is identical to the practice. If you put in some effort and do the work, you can get an A.
Douskey is a very sweet woman, and a much better lecturer than the Chem 1A professors (calling out the Head-Gordons). She goes through most labs beforehand, so you know what to expect. Makes lab clearly the easiest part of Chem 1A, so you can focus on the lecture portion of the class. Sarcasm was on point, very funny lady.
The only thing hard about Chem 1AL was the lab report. However, you did get a regrade with everything you did wrong on a rubric so there's no way you can't get a better grade the second time. Also, you need an iClicker for the class.
The lab reports took a long time to complete, but this is a big chunk of your grade. Go to office hours to get help on homework and labs. Her exams are very similar to prior exams.
She's the homie and very relatable.
She is enthusiastic and does her best to make lab lectures interesting. Attendance is mandatory, but the iClicker tests give you a nice grade cushion. The lab report was the most difficult part of class, but you get a rewrite so you should end up with a decent grade on it. Her exams aren't too difficult as she knows Chem 1A lecture is hard enough.
Lecture was mandatory, and it was hard to get anything out of these lectures. Incredibly dry. No reason to avoid her, just have to show up and work on other homework for an hour a week.
Michelle Douskey is such a great, funny, and kind professor! Her style of lecture is very unique, and her humor accommodated the occasional dryness of the lectures. She loves interacting with students. The formal lab report was difficult, but she allowed a rewrite. The final exam was super easy, similar to the practice exams. Overall very easy!
She is a great person and very nice to all. She does iClicker questions so you have to come to lecture and makes experimental chemistry concepts a bit easier to understand. Lab was very fun and I loved my GSI. Basically, a very good professor to take in conjunction to Chem 1A.
Super easy class! Go to lecture with your iclicker, get bonus points for surveys, show up to lab and follow instructions, do all pre-labs, and turn in all post-labs and you'll do well. Lab exam was pretty easy and I barely studied. Lectures are interesting, GSIs are helpful. Wish I could have spoken to her more 1 on 1, she seems fantastic!
Douskey is nice and sometimes pretty funny. She is very clear on what she wants. Labs were really easy, but they were a lot of work. If you put in the effort, it's an easy A.
TBH, I learned Chemistry from her and not my actual Chemistry prof.. She is hilarious and the reason why I learned some chemistry last semester. I would honestly want to thank her if I saw her again. She teaches well, has humor, and overall is willing to help you out. I HIGHLY recommend her.
Easy A. Free iClicker pts. Most of the time I didn't understand her lectures but it wasn't even necessary for me to do the labs and still get 100% on lab reports (I guess depends on GSI though). Labs required minimal work. She's funny. Gives lots of extra cred and final is pretty much exactly the same as practice exams she posts. Would take again!
I had her for Chem 1AL, she was really nice and caring. A little scattered at times but not too much. I would recommend her, it's an easy A.
Pretty straightforward class, and I personally found Douskey to be really funny. I enjoyed her teaching style and think the class is an easy A.
This class was a LOT of work for 1 unit. 3 hours of lab a week + 1 hour of lecture (iclicker), prelabs that take from 15-60 mins, and lab reports that take around 45 min. If you do the work, you will end up with an A but the final will most likely bring your grade down, possibly to a B. Make sure you put in the work if you want an A.
Dr. Douskey is kinda an underdog, she's passively funny and also very willing to help her students succeed. Her lectures combine technical info with real-world applications. The final exam can affect your grade, so actually study for it. It sucks because it's a bit of work for 1 unit, but overall it's not too hard if you put in the effort
Technically took Chem 1B which is the same thing as Chem 4B I guess. Though this class is easier than other science classes at Cal (Prof. Douskey doesn't torture her students), still study your butt off for exams, put effort into the hw, and do your lab reports. I really think that working (moderately) hard in her class will get you an A!!
I had a difficult time in my general chem classes, but Douskey's lectures were always clear, interactive, and well-paced. Labs often ended early, but also ran over quite a few times. However, like most lab classes at Cal, your GSI determines most of your grade. Ask questions in lab and put forth a noticable effort so you stand out.
So Prof. Douskey is cool however your grade is entirely based on the GSI. Make sure to get the right GSI and it will make all the difference. Douskey is great at explaining concepts and her actual lecture class is laidback. Great prof. Show up to lecture to get easy iclicker points (don't slack off on this) and you'll be good.
The class workload is even greater than a 4 unit class. We have 1-hour lecture and 3-hour lab each week. It has A LOT OF homework. Usually, I did prelab for 1.5 hours, class notebook for half an hour, and lab report for at least 2 hours. Tough grader. It has a final as well. The prof is good and funny, but the workload is EXTREMELY heavy.
So much work for a 1 unit class! The lab reports are reports are long, the prelabs can also be heavy. There is an essay required during the semester and a final exam. The class is mandatory and the labs are three hours long. If you have a good GSI, you will be fine but if you don't good luck!
Douskey is not particularly engaging or caring about the curriculum from the perspective of the student. Chem 1AL is a non-linear class with a more silo-style progression, which makes each new subject difficult to grasp as it does not relate to the previous one. This class was not my favorite, but Douskey could have been worse.
Prof Douskey is much better at teaching Chemistry than the actual Chem 1A professors. I learned more from her than I thought I would in a 1 unit class. That being said, the class has the workload of a 4 unit class. She is thoughtful and caring and designs labs to make them sustainable and relevant to our lives. Do the practice exams!
Douskey's explanations of her labs were clear and easy to follow. Her sense of humor is amazing and made her easily approachable. As long as you pay attention in her lectures (or watch the webcasts attentively), the labs should be pretty easy!
Really enjoyed having her as a lab lecturer. Her lectures are more difficult to understand then the labs themselves but her lectures overlap well with CHEM 1A material
Explains all the content very well and doesnt overwhelm you by going too fast. Ive always enjoyed going to lecture.
Dr. Douskey was great! She had this slight sarcastic humor that made lectures fun. For the lab itself, make sure you ask questions if you're confused because it's easy to get marked down on your lab reports. Your grade depends a lot on the GSI that you have.
Class consisted of a lecture and lab component. Attendance was mandatory for both but there were ways to get extra attendance points if you missed a few lectures. Basic chemistry concepts, a good intro lab class. Focused heavily on green chemistry. The GSIs were very available in office hours for help, and the course itself was well-managed.
Lab lectures were fairly basic and did not cover enough material to be able to complete the questions on the pre-lab or lab report. 1AL content did not follow what was being taught in 1A. Grade and class experience depends heavily on your GSI. Watch out for the final and learn the green chemistry principles by heart.
She is a great chem professor, very funny and easy to understand. Like any stem class you need to put in work, but as long as you understand material this is not a difficult class.
Douskey would give a very general explanation of what we would be doing in lab. Her grading criteria was super vague for lab reports so it was hard to know what to improve on. Make sure you know the goals of experiments and why you're taking certain steps, you'll need it for the final. Also understand how to do calculations. YOU NEED AN ICLICKER
Dr.D is awesome! I hated chemistry coming into college and was not looking forward to this course. However, it quickly turned into my favorite class. Lab itself is super fun. Make sure you get a good GSI because they are the ones who grade your lab reports which make up most of your grade. They are not too difficult, but can be at times
Professor Douskey is super smart and her lectures are very engaging. She does a good job of explaining concepts, especially if it's your first time taking chem. However, your grade in her lab class will depend heavily on how you perform in labs, your experience in which depends on your GSI, so be aware when choosing your section!
Dr. Douskey is an absolute gem!! I love how she puts on songs that tie in with the topic you are learning right before the lecture and how she jokes during class. Even after classes went online, she did everything for her students to learn the material and attend virtual lab. She made lab fun and interesting. Would def. take her class again!
Douskey's lectures were really kinda pointless, very rudimentary concepts taught for labs that incorporate so many different criteria and techniques. Your grade really comes down to attending labs, having RELIABLE lab partners, and asking for clarification on lab report questions. However, points to her for being nice, humorous and accessible.
Douskey is cool I guess haha! Her lectures were sort of pointless and she wasn't the most engaging, but I still appreciate her effort to make lab lectures as fun as possible. Be ready for a lot of mom jokes that don't always play out the way she wants them to..
Douskey is a great teacher, even though lectures are online, she tends to make every single one interesting and fun! I do recommend choosing your GSI carefully, since some are tough graders! Your grade depends on Labs, so try to be as detailed as possible.
Dr. Douskey was a great professor, especially during the COVID pandemic. She has a great sense of humor & made the class fun & light-hearted! Lab lectures were recorded but you could attend them live. All labs were done online with optional attendance to lab section. Grade is mainly based on GSI grading of lab report sheet. Extra credit is offered!
Dr. Douskey is approachable, light hearted and her lectures were very engaging. She did a great job adjusting the the course to work in an online format. However, some of the reports are lengthy, so you will have to put in more work than a normal 2 unit class. Your grade is also heavily dependent on your GSI, so make sure you get a good one!
Professor Douskey is the best! During lectures, she manages to keep us engaged with jokes and funny stories while also teaching us the course material. The course is well organized, fun, and informative even in the online setting. Your final grade mostly depends on your GSI so make sure you get a good one.
Professor Douskey made this semester so much more bearable. I left each lecture smiling and laughing, and she made it clear that she cared about her students by engaging with us; despite the class having 1000+ students. I loved her so much that I'm hoping to take another course with her once everything is in-person. I can't thank her enough!
Easily one of the best professors! Not only did she engage in lectures with students and GSIs, but she also made this online semester SO MUCH BETTER. You can tell she is passionate and overall enjoys teaching. Her lectures are not hard to understand, even if you have no background chem knowledge. The GSIs for this course are also great.
Although lab became online this year, professor Douskey made it interesting and informative. The class is also curved generously. The only imperfection about this class is how much your grade depends on lab reports, and having a tough grader gsi can really ruin your grade. Would recommend.
Chem 1AL is a lot of work for two units (the nature of labs). Dr Douskey is very caring and very accommodating in her class. Your grade is primarily controlled by your GSI. Lab reports must follow the rubric to a T for full credit. The material is pretty straightforward but still time-consuming. I recommend you take her. She's a fun instructor!
Great lectures that explain the math and background of each lab. Easy final with multiple practice finals provided that match what you will be getting. Amazing and hilarious person that cares deeply for her students!! Go professor Douskey!!!
Her lectures are very clear. The class can be a bit hard, especially since it's online. Just make sure you follow the instructions and you'll be fine. Also, the final exam can be surprisingly difficult, so make sure you study well.
Dr. Douskey is so kind and understanding. I enjoyed her sense of humor and her ability to teach concepts more clearly than they were taught in Chem 1A. The only thing I wish we had was a rubric for all the lab reports because we never knew what we had to include to get full credit on all the reports. GSI's grade hard but there are EC opportunities.
This class is not hard but extremely obnoxious. This class has been completely inaccessible and she expects way too much from you especially during a pandemic. She has provided horrible resources at best and expects everyone in the class to have a tablet and access to a different version of the textbook than she provides. Not even good recordings.
Lectures were boring but she is a nice person.
she's super sweet & it's a fun class! easy A
Dr. Douskey is a fun prof, and helpful in office hours. I can honestly say her lectures were enjoyable to attend. The class itself is a bit tedious, mostly due to the long lab reports (which is the case for many lab classes). However, it is graded fairly, and the end-of-semester exam isn't too difficult. Work hard and you can get an A.
Her lectures are amazing and quite engaging. The grading criteria are clear and consistent from the beginning of the semester to the end. I personally would like to take her classes again.
Although I did well, I wanted to warn students. The grading for the lab reports really depends on the GSI and impacts your final grade heavily. Douskey was not very accommodating, expected students to have tablet access, and was harsh over Piazza to students with questions. This course felt harder than it should be. Final exam is tough, study!
Douskey seems like a nice person. The labs are all based on your GSI so make sure you get a good one! Her lectures were pretty boring and took way longer than the 50 minutes scheduled. Her class is not bad, but it can be improved. Don't bother posting on Piazza because they never answer. Final is hard so really study!
This is not a hard class at all, but my low rating is for the professor herself. She has a somewhat passive aggressive attitude. Given the pandemic, she was not very accommodating - expected people to have tablet/stylus, and ran way over the 50 minutes for every single lecture.
Professor Douskey was very caring of her students and had excellent lectures. She would often stay after class to get to know students better and talk with them about a wide range of interesting topics. Make sure you attend lectures for the participation check-ins and google form surveys.
Theyre very clear and the lab was pretty easy although everything really depends on your gsi. The final is what gets most ppl but other than that its a solid class
Awesome Professor! Just show up to lecture, pay attention, do what you're supposed to do in lab and you'll be fine. Go to office hours before submitting lab reports if you want double check criteria. Do all the practice exams she gives before the final. Go to weekly review session held by the head GSI--It helps a lot in the end when studying.
PROF. DOUSKEY IS AMAZING! I took 1A at the same time, and really started to hate chem. But, Douskey made me realize chemistry isn't so bad, and with the right prof, you can succeed. I wish she taught Chem 1A, too. Her lectures were easy to follow, and lab was very fun! She often cracked jokes and was great to have this semester! Highly recommend!!!
The lab reports truly take a lot of work, especially when you are unsure of the grading criteria (which isn't clear). Always mention IMFs, units, and calculations whenever possible and you will do well. Your GSI should be helpful when completing your report!! The final exam was extremely similar to the practices, watch pre recorded lectures tbh
Prof Douskey is so sweet and fun! Makes chem seem so much better. Labs are hard because report grading criteria is unclear, but you will be fine. Final is easy if you study a bit!
I took this class Fall 2021 so all our lectures were online. Even then, she explains everything you need to know clearly and concisely, no trick questions or anything. The class really just depends on the lab reports, which depends on how easy your GSI grades. Reports aren't really difficult though, just pay attention to lab and read the procedures
I have to say that the lecture part is not that "important " for the grades. The most important thing of this course is the weekly lab reports, which is 60% of your grade. However, the rubrics is vague and it depends heavily on ur GSIs. The final exam is pretty easy and there's a lot of practice midterm available.
Her practice midterm exam answers always have mistakes in it so students freak out not knowing which is correct. She also includes topics we haven't learned on the midterm.
So much work for no reason. Doesn't teach whats covered in homework -- expects you to learn from an online bot homework site.
Douskey was one of the best chem professors I have had. She cares about her students well being and success. Her exams aren't hard if you take the practice exams she provides. She gives free versions of the lab manuals and textbooks making the class really accessible. Her lectures are kind of slow but she explains things very well.
Ngl did not attend a single lab lecture. They were widely unhelpful and just repeated pre lab information. Dr Douskey was very enthusiastic and kind, but definitely spoke quickly.
Professor Douskey is nice and enthusiastic, but the lab lectures don't really do that much. They help you prepare for the lab a bit, but they aren't very helpful and it's mandatory attendance. Most of your grade is on labs, which are graded by GSIs. The final exam is pretty easy, and really similar to the practice exams she provides.
To preface, I took Douskey for CHEM 1AL and CHEM 1B. I enjoyed having her for 1B a lot more since the curriculum was more tailored to what she wanted us to know. I felt that she was more caring too. Her lectures and homework don't match up to the midterms but the practice midterms are very similar to the real ones! Definitely take practice exams!
She's a good professor. She tried to create a good atmosphere and tried to give out extra credit at the end. Lectures don't help much with lab. For lab reports there often wasn't a clear grading rubric. Lab reports were usually lengthy so make sure to start early. The final exam is very similar to practice exams. Overall, the class isn't difficult.
For 1AL your GSI is what really matters. If you get a good GSI they will for sure do anything they can to help you succeed. Douskey is nice and she tried extra credit but it didn't work. She does round up your grade though which is helpful.
Just one test which is the final. The finals are pretty much the same format every semester, except sometimes she'll add in a trick question here and there. Extra credit depends. She is a funny teacher and her lectures are engaging but not quite informational? Feel like everytime my peers and I would walk into lab we'd be confused. Your GSI is key!
While the Chem 1AL experience is heavily based on the GSI, Douskey provided clear lectures and viable online alternatives in case of extraneous situations. Labs were interesting and, while write-ups were time-consuming for a 2-unit class, the overall course was a net benefit to students interested in chemistry.
Professor Douskey is very intelligent and she loves chemistry. Her lectures are funny and she makes her students smile. Her explanations are very clear and her notes are useful. Chemistry 1AL is easy to follow and I would recommend Douskey.
Professor Douskey makes lectures really engaging; she has cool aunt energy, which is rather comforting. Although the work load is sometimes rather heavy, I think the class itself is quite enjoyable.
You better pray that you get a good GSI they're what make or break the class. Prof doesn't do anything, she lectures and those barely make sense cause she spends way too much time going on tangents. She doesn't go above and beyond, her GSIs take on the majority of work. If you take this class and get a bad GSI, honestly just drop, it's not worth it
I would not take with her except if it is a requirement
She seems like a great person and is really kind, but the lectures really never made sense and there was almost no direction for the labs until the day of. There are online labs available to view so that helps make sense of everything before the actual lab day, but the lectures are honestly useless and I only went because it's part of the grade.
I love Professor Douskey! She is honestly one of the best teachers I have had this semester at Berkeley! She is helpful during office hours and always answers questions after lectures to clarify everything. Her classreally made me fall in love with chemistry. 10/10 teacher, she is fantastic.
Douskey is overall a good lecturer. She tells jokes that either hit or miss, but I rather have that over a stale professor. However, my 1AL experience was mostly negative, due to my GSI and her extremely strict grading on lab notebook pages. GSI breaks/makes the class for lab, not the actual professor. Very generous curve for final grades however.
I loved Prof Douskey! She is extremely kind and you can tell she cares about her students. Your GSI matters, but I had a chill GSI. The lab reports are lots of work, so be ready to put in time. It's a 2 unit class but it was the most work I had and shorter labs took 2-3 hrs. Go to office hours, GSI's are super helpful and will answer q's.
She's probably the best lecturer I've had so far; engages the students, good humor. The GSI you get dictates your experience in the class more than she does, however. A lot of prep (reviewing the lab process, goals, and doing the online lab) is really the key to doing well. Lab reports are a lot of work and the questions are sometimes unclear.
She's an alright professor, her lectures are useless, but funny, yet are counted for your participation in the course. She didn't accommodate us for the final in response to the strike and left a sour taste in my mouth because she couldn't find my participation makeup forms. She's good for 1AL, but her presence in the class is meh. GSIs did more.
Lectures were entertaining but did not help with lab reports. SO much work for a 2 unit class and questions were often vague + grading varied between GSIs. Go through the online lab before attending in person to make lab go smoothly.
Amazing professor. Absolutely amazing. While the prelab assignments and lab reports can require lots of time and effort on the student's part, Chem 1AL with Dr. Douskey will surely be a net benefit for any and all students interested in exploring chemistry.
The lectures were helpful for a quick overview of future labs, and the final exam heavily mirrors practice exams. There is a lot of work for 2 unit lab though.
The prelab quizzes were sometimes excessive. The lectures also didn't always help with the actual lab itself which made the labs confusing and stressful because of time. The GSI's really did make a huge impact on how the class flowed. Overall Douskey was kind, but most discussion on material were with GSI's.
Professor Douskey is engaging and a good lecturer, but her lectures aren't super helpful for the labs. Ultimately, your success in this class will be determined by your GSI. Don't underestimate this class being 2 units; the lab reports are very time-intensive. Start pre-lab quizzes and lab reports early, and go to your GSIs office hours!!
The lab lectures are so not helpful for the actual labs. Douskey makes some jokes and stuff but you basically have to learn everything yourself for the labs -- the stuff she lectures on is barely relevant.
Professor Douskey teaches the lab lectures, but the actual lab is led and graded by GSIs. The pre-lab quizzes and lab reports are VERY time consuming. Attendance is mandatory and is taken with iClicker, and they don't accommodate that much for lab and lecture absences. I felt like the lectures did not help me complete the lab assignments.
Lectures are not very helpful and points are docked from lab reports for the smallest things. But the lab exam was very fair, okay experience overall
Nice professor! Appreciate how she conducts lectures, fairly easy to understand. The downside is that ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY (taken via iClicker...which has a lot of connectivity issues). Class is a lot of work (Pre-Labs and Lab Reports are VERY TIME CONSUMING). THE FINAL DETERMINES YOUR GRADE! Recommend taking with Chem 1A simultaneously!
She was a very kind and funny professor. However, the lectures did not really help with the lab. GSI's office hours helped the most as they are very knowledgeable. There is so much work despite it being a 2 credit class. There are lab reports weekly which are so time consuming. You do learn a lot of lab skills though.
Lectures are semi related to labs, but you don't need to go to understand the lab. You do a pre-lab quiz before every lab and have to pass it in order to attend lab. Just read the lab manual in order to pass the quiz. Lectures mostly have to do with the stuff on the final. Had an A before the final, and ended with a C, so study for the final.
lecture could be boring sometimes because it was either exactly what was in the prelab or didn't help for the prelab quizzes at all. rubrics on lab assessments were pretty picky, so make sure to read the questions on lab reports carefully and answer every part of the question. this class takes a lot of time for being 2 units.
Her lectures were kinda boring but she and the classes resources I found to be pretty accessible, especially with prompt responses. This class was a lot of work but ultimately pretty good.
Weird and sometime snot relevant lectures but definitely mandatory because of iClicker. The class itself wasn't too bad as long as you have a good gsi. Final was also not bad just not a terribly enjoyable class. Lab reports were easy but like busy work.
Her lectures are pretty irrelevant to the actual content, she's just cracking jokes the entire time. Will depend on your GSI. Labs are graded very subjectively and vaguely, they're not easy at all. Final matches practice exams pretty well. Overall pretty unremarkable.
Professor Douskey's lectures do not cover what is on the pre-lab or the lab assignment. However, the labs entirely depend on how good is your GSI. Lab reports are graded strictly, and some of the lab reports are long (especially the last lab). The final exam somewhat matches the practice exams.
She such a nice and sweet professor. However, Pre-Labs and Lab Reports took up so much time and energy. Most of the final grade relied on the final exam, so if you did bad on final exam you were done for. As long as you did practice exam you should be able to get a b at least because I did not attend any lecture.
Lectures are hit-or-miss, but the GSI's office hours are super helpful. Labs are graded strictly, so read the rubrics carefully. Unstuckstudy AI made prepping for the final a breeze. Overall, it's a lot of work for a 2-unit class.
She is rude when you ask for help and want an accommodation. The opposite of caring and understanding. Do not recommend.
Way too much work that is graded way too hard for a 2 unit intro class. Lab reports are so long with pointless questions and are graded according to inconsistent, arbitrary and unspecified guidelines where the only advice they give you is "be more detailed" and when you submit it there is hidden criteria that is mentioned absolutely no where else.
Lectures were mandatory because of iClicker but not helpful. You don't need to pay attention and you'll still be fine in lab. Lab reports were tedious and long. Final was almost exactly the same as practice tests. Overall, doable class but mostly busy work from the lab reports and ended up putting more time into Chem1AL than Chem1A because of it.
Easy class but very time-consuming. Lab reports can take hours and are graded harshly, if you submit anything out of order you receive an automatic zero. Pre-lab quizzes can be very lengthy and are often just time-consuming busy-work, but not too difficult. If you put effort into lab reports and study well for the final you can easily get an a.
Dr. Douskey is sweet and cares about her student. Has a solid curriculum. Lectures often felt irrelevant to lab reports and prelab quizzes. Reports were tedious and strictly graded, but GSIs were helpful. Reports took up to 8 hours a week. The final was true to practice exams. This class is not hard, just requires a lot of work outside of class.
Lectures were not helpful for doing the lab but attendance was mandatory. Pre lab quizzes were tedious but easy. Lab reports were time consuming and graded pretty harshly. Final exam was easy and basically the same as practice exams.
Lectures were engaging and she is accessible outside of class especially in office hours. She stayed behind often to answer questions and it is clear that she cares for her students. Although the prelab quiz and lab reports were time consuming and often ambiguous, they are doable. The final exam was fair and similar to the plentiful practice given.
Lab lectures weren't the most useful and grading criteria was a bit unclear. However she's a nice professor and overall the class was pretty manageable. Lab exam was identical to exams from previous years.
I love Dr. Douskey. It clearly shows that she is passionate about education. I will say her lectures don't have any relevancy to the actual labs. The grading of this class depends all on your GSI. The practice final exams ARE CARBON COPYS to the Final Exam you will get. Also the class isn't hard just a bunch of busy work (like srsly a ton).
Attendance is mandatory, she uses iclicker. The lectures are a waste of time. She's not a bad lecturer but the content she teaches you is not helpful for the pre-lab quiz or post-lab report. The final is the exact same as the practice exam she gives. The class is only difficult because of the busy work you have to do.
Prof. Douskey made 1AL's expectations very clear and her lectures covered general topics associated with the lab as well as some of the procedure. Attendance is mandatory and she uses polls during her lectures to track participation. She's got a good sense of humor and makes lab less intimidating.
lectures can be a little hard to pay attention to but she has a nice sense of humor. lecture attendance for 1al was mandatory (used iclicker). made it clear what she wanted in lab reports. very approachable
Took chem 1AL last semester and Dr. Douskey was great. She was sweet and approachable, but Im really giving this course a 5 because of Nick Watanabe. Genuienly one of the best GSIs ive ever had at Berkeley and helped me and many other students feel like we understood what was actually going on in the lab and lab reports. Truly amazing and dedicated
It is unfortunate that STEM majors must take Chem1AL as they will have to take this course. The lectures are loosely related to the the lab reports and participation seems to be arbitrarily given or removed because the professor cannot accurately measure it. Thankfully the final exam is exactly like the practices so it isn't hard to do well.
I would honestly rate this class a 5 if lectures were not mandatory and there wasn't an emphasis on "green chemistry". Half of lab reports are hypothetical questions and lecture is useless if you spend 15 minutes reading the lab manual. Lab exam is the same as practice exams and reports are fair once you learn what your gsi wants to see.
Go to lectures, do the iClicker, and pay attention in lab, and you will be more than okay! This 5 is really for my GSI Li Teh and my teacher scholar Riya. I doubt I would have done as well in this class without asking them so many questions every lab, and I am so thankful for the time and effort they put in to helping me and answering my questions.
Dr. Douskey was a funny and efficient lecturer, but sometimes the lecture content was not really related or necessary for the lab that week. The actual labs were an unbelievable amount of work for how little units Chem1AL gives but still very doable. My lab GSI Nick was truly amazing and the best GSI I think I will ever have in my college career.
Practice exams look really similar to the real thing, spend time focusing on broad concepts/lab applications. Engaging lectures and really helpful during office hours
She was okay, just that there was so much busy work for no reason. Pre-lectures and labs did not have to be that tedious, and I spent way more time than I should have on assignments. Other than that, she's okay, and her lab exam was really easy.
A huge portion of the grade came simply from iClicker, which was a bit ridiculous. The exams were poorly written.
Way too much work for a 2-unit course. Lectures require attendance but are barely related to the labs. Finals exam is similar to the past papers but had many traps in the questions. The professor seems like a nice person but gives unappealing lectures. She tends to mumble and not project her voice, not to mention she also goes on many tangents.
Douskey's lectures were pretty irrelevant to the labs themselves, but she seems like a nice person overall! Lab rubrics weren't clear at all, its pretty common to get points off for minor things that were not specified beforehand, and there's lots of busy work. Labs+prelab quizzes took forever and were very tedious as well....
This professor is nice, but the biggest problem I had with her was her disorganization. The syllabus was extremely hard to find, and she does not make it clear what she expects in assignments, resulting in lost points. It is also very work-heavy. The class wasn't too hard, necessarily, and the final is very similar to the practice tests she posts.
lectures were such a drag and not very pertinent either to the lab, postlab report. final is a breeze if you do all the practice matierial because the content does not vary much between years. GSI makes or breaks this class, but most of the GSIs are great
If you're taking her for Chem 1AL, be prepared that it's a lot of work for no reason. SO much busy work. During lectures she's really disorganized, goes over time every class, and uses iClicker so you can't leave early. I didn't like her as a prof, but it really depends on your GSI. The lab exam is just like practice exams and is very fair.
labs are very straightforward and simple, but lab lecture is not taught very well. if you are not enrolled in chem 1a at the same time, it may be challenging becuase i forgot most of chem1a content and prof douskey didnt explain the concepts well enough for me to do well on final exam, so i had to self study it all again.
I don't know why people are complaining so much about this class, the only con I'd give was it was a lot of work for a 2 unit class, but besides that the professor was really funny, nice and engaging if you actually made an effort to talk to her or ask her questions. The final is also extremely light and earlier than most finals.
Overall, the professor is not as bad as other ratings suggest imo. Even though it could be a lot of work for a 2-unit class, I found it to be manageable and the final seemed pretty fair.
Funny professor but lectures aren't that helpful towards the lab. This class has a lot of busywork for a 2 unit class and it felt more time consuming than my 4 unit classes. Final was easy if you knew what was going on in the labs and VERY similar to practice tests given.
The lectures are a waste of time, but the lab reports are graded pretty fairly and its a pretty easy A if you do the work and go to office hours. I have to say the GSI makes or breaks the class. My GSI was Josh Dillen and he was quite rude and condescending, but other GSIs were super nice (Keith was incredible)
Very unclear grading criteria, and the GSI is a make or break. I second the comment below about Josh Dillen being unhelpful and rude during office hours and lab, but I had a great experience with Haisley, Zakir, and Nick! Most of them are great:)
Kind professor on the outside, but quite uncaring and unsupportive when adjustments need to be made.
Lectures weren't that good, the lab manual is all you really need to understand what's going to happen during lab. The lab reports were fine but there was no rubric which sucked, they're also just sometimes lengthy and time-consuming. The final exam was pretty much the same as the practice exams provided. Overall, not the hardest class just tedious
Overall grade is mainly based off lab reports and those are pretty hard. Make sure to gain advice and help from GSIs by going to office hours. Final is similar to practice tests. This class will take up a lot of your time even though it is a 2 credit course so make sure to manage your time!
She is a great professor, and I don't understand why people are complaining. She is very approachable during office hours. I think all this criticism comes from the fact that this is the first lab class many students take at Berkeley, and they aren't prepared for the rigor P.S. Don't submit your lab report without going to at least one office hour
So much work. I basically lived inside the GSI OH room and did prelabs and lab write ups in there, begging GSI's to tell me the criteria because it made no sense. So much reading (2/3 hrs) for prelabs, mandatory lecture attendance. Only things that saved me was my GSI. Grading- prelab quizzes: 10% Participation: 5%, Lab reports 60%, final: 25%
Professor Douskey's structure for lab isn't the greatest. Her lab report style is weird and there's no rubric so you genuinely don't know what you have to do to get full points on a lab. I remember being docked for not writing a specific word (I didn't see anywhere that we had to). Her emphasis on green chemistry truly doesn't prepare you for 1A.
Lab reports were lots of unnecessary work and graded harshly. Doing the labs themselves weren't that bad since the expectations were clear and easy to follow along, GSIs are understanding and wanna leave as badly as you do. Final was just a copy and paste of the final practice exams she gives so just study those and you're guaranteed to do well.
Her lectures were usually unrelated to the actual lab, but she is a caring professor and her grading system is very fair.
Her lectures weren't the best, her notes were unclear, and most of the time, the lecture was irrelevant to what was actually happening in the lab. The lab reports were long and time-consuming. There is no rubric provided for the reports, but they are graded fairly. My GSI was Kevin Miura, and he was the best. Highly recommend!
Professor Douskey is kind of hit or miss. Some lectures were very helpful for lab, especially when she went over procedures. Other times she went on tangents and often didn't finish the slides. Labs are fine, but lab reports can be harsh with unclear grading. However, she's funny and warm, and the final is very similar to the practice finals.
Lowkey this class shaved off 2 years of my lifespan but Douskey seems like a good person! VERY tedious grading for lab reports. My GSI Zakir Talpur was the goat, he's genuinely kind and tried his best to help despite the chaos that comes with an overcrowded lab. Curve was also very generous! Got curved up from an 88.86% -> 90% at the end.
Labs are based off her book of lab manuals you are required to buy or print. Sometimes directions are unclear but GSI's help. Lectures are mandatory but don't help with anything. Also on the lab reports and final, grading criteria is very unclear and you will be marked down for not including information the question didn't ask.
Her lectures did not relate to the pre lab content and I ended up having to look most things up.
Very kind professor! It is only reasonable that she couldn't cover every procedure during her lectures. But she is overall very helpful!
This class soaked up way too much time for 2 units. The grading on lab reports were often unclear. I found that the lectures didn't help at all. The grading is pretty lenient but be aware it takes up more time than you'd expect. I often found myself stressing about lab reports.
Should be more than 2 units based on the amount of time it took to complete the lab reports. Not all labs are 3hrs. She's alright, but lectures weren't super helpful so it depends on your GSI. Labs are fine, but very strict grading criteria. Gives good resources for the final and it looks like the old exams, but explanation grading is confusing.
Funny lectures and lab final is identical to past exams (which she gives you). Some of the prelab work feels tedious but it doesn't actually take that long. Class depends on lab GSI as they're the one you actually spend the most time with.
prof douskey is a great lecturer, even though the lectures don't really match the labs. if you actually prepare your lab notebook, write down your data and complete your work on time, this should be a pretty easy class. some gsi's can be harsh graders so go to office hours if you want to clarify anything!
