She is nice, but unfortunately, if you are paying for an education you are wasting your money by taking her class because she does not know what she is talking about.
She is very nice! Unfortunately seems very nervous, and that interferes with her teaching. She uses t/b definitions instead of simplifying them, so it is hard to keep up in lectures. She is helpful by posting her notes on W-CT before the lecture.I would give her another chance b/c she has potential.
I feel like I am in highschool with a student giving me a presentation. She is nice, however I feel like it is a waste of time. She is too nervous, and really needs to review her stuff before she gives the lecture. Sometimes i think she is literally reading us the text book.
Very sweet and nice lady, but she is so quiet and seems nervouse, students don't bite, we need discipline thats all!! she's very helpful, but just needs to put her foot down and find her groove in lectures. . in a few years i think she'll be great.
She's very nice, but seems nervous and doesn't seem to know how to control the class. Go to class. A lot of the q's on the midterms are from lectures. In a few years I think she will be an awesome prof. She just needs to find her groove.
Midterms questions are pretty randomly chosen, not always focused on expected material. Very nervous and has trouble with some words.
Professor Dumas is incredibly good-natured and will do whatever it takes to help you succeed in the course. Go to her classes, listen, and take notes and you'll do well. She rewards those who put in the effort.
she's very nice, and i can definitely see her being a good prof later on. at this point she's just a bit too nervous, and she needs to learn how to command a class. her notes aren't bad, and i recommend going to class, because a lot of the questions on midterms and finals come from her lectures.
booo her voice is annoying the lectures are boring.
Too nervous..its like watching a bad highschool presentation. LOOSEN UP
she's fantastic. the most helpful prof i have ever had. has us take notes like crazy in class, but i find the textbook is almost unnecessary because of that. definitely take a class with her (the high level ones are probably better)
just read the text for test. ive never seen a teacher sleepwalk through a semester more than this one.
she has *the* most annoying voice in the entire world. but the class was easy, and she's really funny sometimes.
Dumas was extremely helpful in every way--her classes though--have to change. She makes the material SO boring you don't even want to go--I agree with the sleepwalking through the lecture notes- she doesn't encourage any discussion or anything. She's a real nice person though!
Every sentence ends in a question - MOST ANNOYING VOICE. most boring class to sit though, however it was very easy since everything is straight from the textbook. Definately the worst prof Ive had in my university experience..
Her class is very boring and it could be a lot more interesting if she encouraged class discussion. The short answer on her exams are very sketchy becuase they are so vague and you could really put any answer but if it's not the one she's looking for you get 0. The TA's mark way to hard for a first year course.
i found, essentially, that her classes, essentially were interesting. But, essentially the exams were not essentially quite the same as the course. i counted. one time she said esstentially 23 times in the lecture.
wicked classes; we watched video clips every single lecture! made me want to go..her lecture notes that are on WEB CT are totally empty, so you have to go to class. but that's not that bad. and whatever she gives us for readings, she goes over in the lecture. It's my fave class this semester!!
Very good teacher, and an interesting class, however the midterms and exam are very hard, not a lot that people study is actually on the exam... My advice, go to class and do all the readings and it should be fine
I like Michelle. Shes the nicest prof if you actually have a chance to talk to her one on one and she teaches well. Some of her lectures are dry, which is my only complaint. Also, herexams tend to be pretty vague. Shes so flexible though and she has so much respect for guelph students.
awesome use of examples and visuals
the exams were marked extremely difficult, its as if the TA's were looking for every thing verbatim from the text (almost impossible)
Worst...prof....ever. Her lectures are so incredibly dry. She has moved on form the word "essentially" to "etc" and every sentence ends as if it is a question. I went to each lecture and I never found myself wanting to be there. .....It was so bad...
Dumas is a really fun prof, she tells some of the greatest childhood stories. Overall I thought that the course was dry, but I could have never remained awake was it not for her humor. Midterms and tests were very far, and if you go to every lecture and take notes you'll never even have to crack the textbook.
Cool Prof! Always funny and engaging. She understands the material well - approachable and down to earth. Very funny self- depricating sense of humour.
Interesting class with fairly easy midterms and assignments. Really doesn't stray too far from the text and she tells you what to expect on midterms which are pretty much exactly whats put on the exams. She seems more like a student sometimes her lectures are disorganized and dont expand on anything, simple concepts
I love Michelle! She is hands down the best professor I've ever had! I loved the way she lectured. I could bring my laptop to class and type everything she said, which made for some pretty detailed notes. The midterms were very easy. She tells you what is on them so if you study that, then you're set. I can't wait to have another class with her!
seriously the most unknowledgable professor at this university. Absolutely dreadful! Worst lecturer of all-time in the history of education. My high school law teacher was more engaging.
Learned absolutely nothing from this prof in class. Is really scattered, relays too many personal anecdotes, and marks written assignments pretty hard. You would only need to go to her class if you want the class participation marks. This is my second time having her, and both times I have not been impressed.
Easy to get good marks. Write down EVERY WORD in lecture. Literally GIVES you every question on the exam. All comes down to exact notes, using her exact words and memorization. Boring lecturer.
I really like the way that michelle lectures! I understand what she is saying because she does not waste her time talking about stuff that dont matter. you need to go to lectures because her exams are based on her lectures. Her exams are very fair as she tells you exactly what to study for. So when there is written questions and assignments they ar
Generally an easy professor who is good about giving hints away for the exam. Lectures were a bit dry, but overall good course.
Overall I really enjoyed Professor Dumas. Her lectures were interactive and was always open for questions while keeping the dry topics interesting. She really could relate to the student perspective well and her exams were pretty fair.
Need to attend class, midterms and exams are based on class. Don't bother with the text, very pointless and not needed. Does provide a good outline for midterms, but must be very specific with all assignments and exams as she is very picky! Can also be very rude!! A good class, but you need to work with the prof, pay attention, and work hard!
Good prof.. Midterms and the final exam were straightforward. If you go to the lecture, you will do well.
shes awesome, tells some hilarious stories. assignments are very straightforward and her teaching style is fun
I like that Michelle incorporated personal stories and jokes into her lectures. She was friendly and funny. She sometimes had videos from good movies or news stories which was really great. She participated in courselink frequently and was always there to help online, through email or courselink and in real life. She used a microphone which was goo
Very unprofessional. Lectures were boring, uneducated and too many personal stories about inappropriate topics were given. Marked papers with almost insulting comments; forget constructive criticism.
Has no understanding of how to help students achieve a good mark, and doesn't care learn. Takes it personally that student don't come to lecture, and punishes them for it with impossible midterms/exams. Terrible marker.. offers no constructive criticism, just vague criticism. i.e. "No!" "Wrong!" Keep up the GOOD WORK!!
The lectures were a drag. Though she would tell the occasional funny store, the lectures were not engaging at all. She did not give constructive criticism but not too hard a marker
You HAVE to go to class. Doesn't post notes online and exams are lecture based. Don't even read the textbook (if exam question isn't covered in class she will specifically tell you to look it up in the textbook). She's a hilarious lady. I don't agree with some of the harsh comments on here - she isn't bad at all.
"makes it personally that student don't come to lecture, and punishes them for it with impossible midterms/exams." then come to class and shut up..you go to university to go to CLASS and listen to lectures not chill at home...good prof, extremely easy exam just come to class and 85%
Best professor I've had in university. She;s engaging&knowledgeable, presenting material clearly. She's very approachable willing to discuss course-related and unrelated matters. She's very reasonable re:marking, giving feedback for improvement.I'd highly recommend that anyone take this/any other course that she teaches.
Go to ALL of her lectures AND study for her tests (from the detailed- if not generous- test reviews that she will provide) so you will earn an 80%+ NOTE: She rewards students that attend lectures and vice versa. Great prof.
I really liked Dumas. Totally appreciated her no BS style teaching. She doesn't want you to have to worry about the little things on midterms/exams, so she tells you areas to study. Also, I really liked how she kept lectures pretty casual. She talks really fast though with little breaks in speech, so it is hard to get down all the info in lecture.
She was by far the most unhelpful professor and does not care about the problems her students are having, or any questions they may need answered.
Worst professor at Guelph. She does not explain course content clearly, and if you ask questions, she becomes very confused. Very unorganized.
Worst professor ever. She was a sociology teacher teaching statistics. Doesn't double check her lecture slides and realizes IN CLASS that her math is done wrong. A student corrected her and she was completely lost and stared being sarcastic as if it was the student's fault that SHE messed up. Not just a one time thing, almost every lecture.
HORRIBLE. MONOTONE. 50% OF THE CLASS DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO FINISH THE MIDTERM. BAD CLASS. (Take it with Walters if you can)
Do not take this class if you like finishing midterms. Class averages are terrible. i dont think she realizes most people need a 70 in her class. Lectures are useless, she makes mistakes on every slide, examples are terrible. If u get stuck in her class study the textbook
Had her 2 times now because I had no choice. She is the worst, no idea what she is doing and whispers to herself. Class always fails and she has to bell curve them to pass
She's really funny and nice, but she talk's way to fast and goes through her lecture slides quickly, which makes it hard to take good notes.
I took this class as a night class and was VERY interested after hearing first lecture. She is a great lecturer, but you need to come class because her slides are just the basis of what she talks about.
dumas is awful. she is rude to students whenever they ask for help, doesn't explain anything in class, and her exams are based off of stupid details for MC rather than knowledge of actual theories or concepts. When you go to her or her TAs for help, they'll tell you one thing, and then on the exam/paper you'll get that thing wrong.
Her lectures tend to complicate stuff that you would otherwise understand from reading the text. Examples used in class do not help with understanding content. Office hours are helpful, though, and her weight assignment for midterms/work made the course easier on the students. Try to have a background in the subject before taking this course
One of the worst professors I've ever had at the university. Does not explain anything, little room for questions, terribly written midterms, unrealistic expectations for finals, and overall does not provide good criticism or even any at all. Suggest NEVER taking a class with her.
She tries hard and answers a lot of emails and discussion points but she butchers you on assignments and exams. She marks on the most specific things.
Very very horrible professor. Midterms were far too long (no one completed them), marks are low in the class and her assignments were very time consuming. Do not take her classes.
Really interesting prof! She does talk fast, but her lectures are fairly straightforward and she gives great reviews. She's funny and definitely a fair marker. I would take another one of her courses again for sure!
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Ignores student questions in class, unclear instructions on assignments that result in marks being deducted without explanation, and midterms that are way too long. Oh, and she stopped answering questions about the final because some students complained about her to the department chair. Avoid if possible.
Overall, very helpful if you go to office hours and seek extra help. Definitely airs on the side of being unprofessional compared to other professors. Also does talk very fast.
Dumas is a great prof. She speaks fast and is a bit monotone but she tells you EVERYTHING you need to know for the midtermsfinal exams. She will tell you specifically pages to read from the textbook (so don't bother reading the weekly chapters, because she will pick a few pages from each reading). Make sure you attend lectures and LISTEN to her.
She fully and thoroughly explains everything you need to know for the midterm, paper, and final. She tells you the exact areas to study from the lectures and textbook, so you aren't scrambling to re-read everything. She devotes a WHOLE class to explaining the paper, which is worth 40 percent-I only lost 1 mark! Also she tells hilarious anecdotes!!
She doesn't take a second to breathe. I cant get any information down because she is talking too quickly.
Really nice person, but the hardest marker I have had in university. Your paper must be perfect if you expect anything higher than a 60. I'm avoiding taking another class with her specifically because of this reason.
I personally found her to be very clear and easy to understand, however, she goes very fast in lectures and has only a few words on her slides. She is a hard marker but if you go see her for help she will give very helpful feedback. Also before the midterm and exam she gave the exact page numbers to read, so you can wait to read the textbooks.
Her lectures are very fast and extremely boring. She is completely monotone when she talks and jumbles her words. As far as bad professors go, I would put her up there with Scott Brandon (if you've ever had him, you would understand). Her tests are impossible, I showed up for 90% of the classes and studied and l got a 55 and 50 on the exams.
Do not hope for her as a professor. She will talk so fast and you will be so annoyed by her monotone voice. You'll learn more from a textbook than her lectures.
Expect to be blown away by the fastest speaking prof out there. You better be a really fast note taker. Don't take a course with her as an elective.
Dumas was one of the worst professors I had in first year. Her lectures were long and she managed to make such an interesting course terribly painful. She very rarely explained herself and came off very unapproachable. I would try to avoid classes with her, though this course did have very interesting content.
Dumas's voice is the notes. You cannot afford to skip unless you plan on doing all of the readings. Exams were very tough with pages of notes to memorize in order to do exceptionally well. Very nice, helpful and funny lady though. She answered every question I had patiently. But the class is crazy tough and was not the easy elective I expected.
This is my second time with Dumas as a prof and it was definitely better this time around. When I had her first year I was blown away by the speed at which she spoke, but either she slowed down or I 'm a faster typist now. I only go off her lectures and have done well in both courses. She does stumble a bit, but it gives you a typing breather..
The content of her course is interesting but I'm not really impressed with how she teaches. She can come off as unprofessional and is unapproachable in terms of asking questions about grades.
She was a very very tough marker and the worst part is that I have always been so interested in criminality and the justice system. If I had the chance to go back and change my course choices for first semester; I would have not picked this course- it brought my average down a lot. However, she is quite funny and the information is interesting.
Amazing professor. Go to class, take lots of notes, study hard, and you will do well. Go to her office hours for help with assignments and exams, she's very nice and helpful. She marks hard, but will tell you specifically what she is looking for which helps a lot. No need to do the readings as she tells you what pages will be on the exam.
This is my third time trying to leave a review for this prof to warn prospective students. She is awful not only in her lecturing style (monotone, condescending with students, refuses to re-grade assignments/tests) but also teaches information that is unsubstantiated and tries make the CJS look corrupt/more interesting to fit her narrative.
Yes, she speaks quickly and you need to be at lectures to get all the information. However, I found the information relevant/interesting, and because I was always so focused on getting everything down, time passed quickly. Also a tougher marker than expected, but overall one of my favourite courses.
The online notes that she provides are very vague and impossible to study from. Her lectures are long and boring, it can be very hard to stay awake for all of it.
She talks fast so be ready to type. Her lectures are what's on the exam, so don't skip class. The content is interesting and she presents it well. She does tell quite a bit of funny stories and does play clips of good tv shows and movies in class. She's a good prof but a bit of a tough marker. Other than that she's pretty awesome
Not the easy elective I expected! Don't take this course if you're in sciences because the work load is unreal. You need to be really good at note taking to do anywhere near decent in her course because she talks a mile a minute and goes through material way too fast. She's funny, but makes the course harder than it needs to be!
Nice lady, but really difficult to sit through one of her lectures. I had her for a 3 hour night class and I always had to leave halfway through cause I literally couldn't sit through her dryly reading off the slides all night. Get ready to type really quickly - she doesn't stop reading and doesn't take questions.
She's funny and seems nice but her teaching style is terrible. I had her for the 3 hour night classes and she could've done more to make that a less painful class but didn't. She read off slides and was incredibly dull. Though she gave an easy assignment worth 40% which really boosts people's mark, still worst class of this semester.
Michelle is not the most popular, but I really admired her. She is a brilliant woman, but there is a lot of content for her class and she tends to go very quickly in lectures and jump around a lot. I strongly recommend pre-typing note headings before class to save time. The textbook is very important to complete the assignment. Exams were hard.
Very funny, interesting lectures. Warning: she talks quickly with little info on the slides so be ready to write quickly. You CANNOT miss a lecture with her.
I found this professor to be an extremely difficult marker. She frequently boasts that students "never do very well" on assignments and tests, and that she has "very rarely increases a grade" for remarks. Overall she seems to design this course to make things more difficult for students, I would not recommend!
I absolutely love Dumas!! She is an amazing and brilliant woman. Yes, the lectures are usually 3 hours long and she talks fast but she has no problem repeating things. Very friendly in person and over email. Gives the BEST REVIEWS EVER. Literally tells you what is on the exam. Papers are easy and straightforward. Very fair grader. Amazing!!!
The course consisted of 1 Midterm, 1 Assignment and a Final. The midterm was fairly easy because it only covered 4, 3-hour lectures. The final paper had clear instructions, but it was graded rather tough and required very particular course material. The final was fair. She doesn't speak too fast anymore- must have slowed down quite a bit.
Do not recommend! Worts course ever
Stay away from this class if you can. One of the worst classes I have taken in my undergrad. Marks extremely hard and the rubric and instructions differ GREATLY. You really never knew how you were going to do. Also did not give marks back in a timely manner at all, still missing 30% of our grade from simple thing like quizzes and discussions.
Very friendly professor but a slow and really tough grader.
Dumas is okay, honestly. She wasn't bad, but she wasn't great. This course specifically is extremely lecture heavy (all pre-recorded), and you absolutely will not be able to pass this course with a half decent grade if you don't watch the lectures or do the readings. She did clearly outline grading criteria for papers though, that was very nice.
