Makes lectures interesting by not just reading off slides. Very understanding and helpful.
SO the exam is less than a week away and we only know 25% of our mark which comes from the midterm months ago... We have no feedback/ marks from two assignments handed in well over a month ago and a few weeks ago... Although she gives outlines on specific things on midterm/exams, the midterm was very tough. 24% of the class failed. Wouldn't retake
We just received our final exam mark and the class average was 54%... keep in mind this is with her taking off 10 multiple choice questions which most likely made the average be a pass. Midterms and exams are extremely tough, unless you know youre stuff top to bottom good luck
Michelle is a very caring and considerate professor. There is a lot of content to remember but she goes out of her way to help with midterm and exam reviews. The assignments had very clear rubrics and was easy to know what was expected. The class average was low, but people who never show up to lectures and dont study obviously wont get a good mark
Hard marker, and did not give positive feedback on assignments and midterm. Her lectures were very boring and her slides did not give a lot of content of the course. Overall, would not recommend.
The test are not that hard because she tells you exactly what is going to be on (so you need to show up to class), but her marking is hard and will most likely bring down ur grade! Good luck!
Almost all exam content is from lectures that are long and a bit dry. She gives very specific criteria for assignments that must be followed exactly as outlined to get a good grade. Show up on exam and assignment review lectures or you wont know what to expect - they are very helpful. Expect to wait to get marks back. Nice prof, tough class.
This prof is monotone, but the course material is interesting. Attending lectures is a must if you want to pass. She gives clear criteria of what she wants for papers and what specific sections to study for exams, which was very useful. She is also very kind and helpful. However, she marks incredibly slow - don't expect to get anything back fast.
Terrible speaker, monotone as can be. Content heavy and is extremely horrendous at teaching it. Hard marker and a lazy one (takes forever). Only knew 25% of our grade going into the FINAL, and creates midterms and finals based 60-70% on non-course info. I would not recommend , would actually recommend this course with any other prof except DUMAS.
She posts the slides, but not in full- there are important details written on them and only shown in class. My class with her was three hours long and we rarely ever got out early- the lectures were long but interesting, just exhausting. She's a really sweet woman but took a long time to mark things.
The worst professor I've ever had. She has the worst slideshows I've ever seen In my entire life lol, her explanations for assignments are so confusing, you have to ask 395738 questions to fully understand what she wants from you. she's so monotone and sounds so uninterested all the time
Horrible prof, takes forever to mark things. Lectures are filled with pointless info and she does not explain anything well. Doesn’t answer emails, and can’t answer questions students ask her. I would absolutely not recommend her as a prof.
Professor Dumas is the most boring human being on the face of the planet. She does not seem interested in the course content whatsoever, and is visibly annoyed if a question is asked. Her assignment instructions are reasonably straight forward if you dig through the syllabus, but she is a hard marker regardless. I would avoid this prof if possible.
if you can, avoid this prof. lectures are incredibly boring, and prof speaks in a monotone voice the entire time. when asked questions that she does not understand, she gets defensive and rude. takes forever to mark and hand back assignments, going into final exam with a large portion of my grade undetermined because she has not handed us our grade
I have had horrible professors, some that mark hard, some that talk in monotone voices, some that give no feedback, some that take forever to mark, but Dumas is all of those wrapped into one horrible package. Avoid her at all costs, if you have to get up early to take a different prof, do it, again, avoid at ALL COSTS!
Professor Dumas' class has a textbook requirement, as the course used Pearson as a way to do chapter quizzes for each chapter of the textbook. The class is also extremely exam heavy; with over 60% of the course credit being from exams. Dumas is a hard marker, and will take forever to mark your work.
Monotone voice and doesn't seem to be interested in what she's teaching. She takes forever to mark things, over half of my rate was undetermined by the final exam. Very rude when asked a question, as if you should know it already. Will give instructions saying one thing, then take away marks because you did what she said.
I would rather burn my foot on a foreman grill than have to sit through one of her lectures again. Very easily irritated and often confused about what she is teaching. Monotone voice. Literally has no clue about the course material.
I will not pay thousands of dollars to receive some low-level education from an idiot on the streets. I'm second-guessing choosing to study at Laurier after this course. She is clearly faking her education, she has absolutely no idea what she is talking about. When did Laurier hire the crackheads from the streets of Brantford for lectures?
Her lecture slides were probably one of the worst i've ever seen, as she puts little to non information of them and only expands on them in class. Also has a very monotone voice which can make class boring. Besides that though she's not terrible. She basically gave us the midterm answers and her 2 major assignments were really easy.
Everyone, please report this professor to your dean ASAP.
Good luck
Idk what to say :(
Our grade is still a mystery (more than 75%, because of ungraded work). Extremely boring with some light of hope with her telling us funny stories. The only reason I come to her lectures is because of the fill in the blank slides.
RUN....RUN....RUN.
Toughest grader ever, you have to go to class or you wont get the content, she doesnt post the lecture slides, lectures super boring and long, takes the whole semester to give you back an assignment. Would not recommend.
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TAKE THIS PROF. The essay that we had to submit she graded my down for links not working but if you go to my essay and copy and paste the links into google the links take you straight to the work. Lectures are so boring and if you do not attend you will fall behind because she does not post the lecture slides.
Professor Dumas was the worst professor I have had so far. Her lecture slides are hard to follow even when in attendance, but you can't miss one or else you will have no idea what is going on in the class. She doesn't do recorded lectures and leaves few vague words on the slides. Additionally, lectures are unbearably long with her monotone voice.
terrible lecture slides that she only expands on in class. hard marker for the assignments but she gave us great reviews for the midterm and exam, which were both easy. very monotone voice which makes classes boring and she gets confused when teaching her own content. helpful outside of class though.
Useless lectures but have to go because she doesnt show everything on slides if you only look online. Always sounds extremely bored, but is really entertaining when talking about anything else except criminology. Takes a long time to mark and is unclear
painfully boring lectures, indecipherable lecture slides, hard marker.
After reading the reviews I was nervous to have her, but I genuinely enjoy attending her class. It can be boring sometimes but you just have to power through some lectures. I will say that some of her slides are confusing due to abbreviations, but she explains them as she goes through them so it's really not a big issue. She can be pretty funny!
Her lectures are terrible they are so confusing and so hard to follow and actually learn
RIDICULOUS MIDTERM!!! She asked us to read 5 News Stories and then compare them to five separate criminology schools of thought. Not a big deal if it wasn't due essentially a WEEK before she made it due! Compare that to the one who RUNS the crim department; his midterm was one school of thought, and based on a song. Get this woman out of Laurier!
terrible professor
While the content is somewhat interesting, as I took this to complete my minor, Ms. Dumas has always seemed like she was bored during her lectures since the start of the semester. If she keeps class more engaging, especially the 8:30s, I see this being a better experience, but for now, she is quite dull and the lectures are a pain to sit through.
As a 2 year student in BBA, I was intrigued by what this class had to offer, unfortunately, this class experience was ruined for me by Professor Dumas. With her lack of engagement throughout EVERY class, it made 8:30 lectures unbearable as her students seemed more engaged then her. POST(1/3)
She will only mention key assignment information in class and wont post those instructions until after you have submitted your work. Takes forever to return any graded work (I got 0 feedback on any of my writing throughout the year even when I submitted my work on the first due date, and only received my marks when classes were done.) POST(2/3)
How is a student supposed to improve their writing skills and understand the professor's grading style if by the time you have submitted all your work for the course, you still haven't gotten any feedback or a mark? Attendance is taken everyday, she will fail you if she think you don't attend enough. The syllabus never mentions attendance marks.
Nice Professor, go to lectures and you will be okay.
Lectures are mind-numbingly boring. Seems like a nice lady, just not a good professor. Also doesn't respond to emails ever.
Lectures are not engaging because of her monotone voice. Lectures are also mandatory to fill in the blanks. She takes forever to hand back marks for assignments.
Do not take this prof. Classes were extremely boring. I did well on the exams but studied nonstop for weeks for them. Papers were marked extremely unfairly and she does not respond well to being challenged. Also takes forever to mark despite having TAs to mark for her. Impossible to do well in her classes.
She is very monotone and always seems uninterested in what she is teaching. She seems to lack education on topics she covers as she can not handle very basic questions students ask. Professor Dumas often sighs during the lectures.. Avoid her at all costs if you value your time, education, and money. Tough marker too.
LEAVE THE CLASS WHILE YOU STILL CAN - She is a very nice lady but when it comes to teaching it is not there what so ever. Talks like a robot with no enthusiasm, very hard marker, her class and lectures make you want to drop out, and for her papers she limits them so you cannot fully explain your points the way you want. SAVE YOURSELF
It is as if she is a combination of the worst teaching attributes possible. The structure of her slides are terrible, she excludes more than half of the important information in the slides student haves access to, which is unnecessary and borderline cruel. I would havelearned more about criminology in a kindergarten class.
I feel like CC100 sucks because of how much material there is to get through- dry lecturing. Used the textbook rarely- still passed but it's just a lot of material to memorize. Went to almost all lectures- still passed cause I did very well on all three assignments and was OK on the exam/midterm. Taking a law course before CC100 would be helpful.
Her lectures are extremely boring, she is a horrible marker and will mark assignments 1 day before the exam. She speaks with no tone and will bore you to death.
lectures are dull and impossible to sit through. takes months to mark assignments. assignment instructions are extremely confusing and dont reflect the feedback she gives on the assignments after she has finally graded them. lecture slides make no sense, class seems to not have any flow or basic topics, rather just a bunch of words mixed together.
The course content is interesting from the text however, her lectures are extremely boring. She speaks very monotone and after speaking to many students in the class, no one understands her slides. They have mainly abbreviations, and it is like random words on each slide. She is not interactive with us. She seems to be bored and unenthusiastic.
Do NOT take criminology with this prof. Lectures are required and SO BORING. The slides she puts on MLS are basically empty, & you need to go to class in order to gain access to any of the information for the exams. She's incredibly monotone & her lectures are actually impossible to pay attention to. Expect very slow grading & unclear instruction:(
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. Her lectures are extremely monotone, and even more boring. She takes forever to mark things, feedback doesn't matter if you don't get it before the next assignment.
Hhhhhhhhhhhhh
The professor spoke in a monotone during lectures. did not elaborate on anything on the slides, and slides were usually full of abbreviations. Marked papers hard and did not return previous ones before the next ones were due, so feedback was unhelpful. Do not take
Very hard marker, lectures are so boring it is almost impossible to sit through her lectures without zoning out
Really hard marker, and she doesn't give assignments back. Also, her lectures are painful
this professor genuinely stinks, not literally. does not mark previous assignments and has not marked assignment from beginning of year. please do not take this course with this professor, i advise you to take the online version so you do not have to go through what i did. very hard and weird marker during and lectures are boring asf.
lectures make no sense, are boring, sleep inducing, and leave everyone around you confused. pls do yourself a favour and take the online version of this class because it is a genuine waste of time and money.
The way she grades is INCREDIBLY confusing. She doesn't give back assignments, you can be taking the exam and not know what mark you have. She's funny sometimes but overall her slides are very vague and she only posts the unfinished versions of them. Honestly unless you NEED to take this class, do yourself a favour and pick something else.
Drop the class if you have her! You'll regret it
Avoid at all cost, really bad at teaching. Take another prof
Professor Dumas is kind and funny but her lectures and grading aren't the best. She posts incomplete lecture slides so if you want to have complete notes you'll have to attend class. Her and her TA's take forever to mark assignments and they are tough graders. She assigns 2 long chapters of the textbook to read per week plus other long articles.
One of the most clear and organized profs I have had. Her assignment instructions are clear, as well as her syllabus. Her lecture slides are concise and organized, as well as her syllabus. If you are unable to read a syllabus or lecture slide, then don't her class, but if you are literate, it will be a breeze. Pay attention and you'll do great!
Absolutely no care whatsoever for her class. Doesn't mark assignments until the very last second and has the most dry and painfully boring lectures that you cant even understand. I warn anyone who takes this class that it's the biggest waste of time ever and it takes her days to respond to emails.
Super clear and concise lectures/slides. Assignment instructions are very clear and she goes over assignment/exam expectations/instructions in lecture so you are able to ask questions. Takes a while to grade, but if you can read the syllabus, and attend lectures, you are pretty much guaranteed to swim through her class.
This is genuinely the hardest marking prof I have ever had. She barely explains where she takes away the marks and doesn't respond to grade appeals. She also marks things almost months later. And lastly, DO NO TAKE HER COURSE IF YOUR NOT GOING TO ATTEND THE LECTURES. Almost 75% of her final exam was lecture content and the exam review was useless.
She seems like a nice lady, and tries to be relatable/funny. The lectures however are very boring. She speaks really fast too, so it is hard to understand all the information she shares. She also takes forever the grade assignments.
She is alright when it comes to grading (not necessarily tough), but she takes foreverrrrrr to return your work with final marks, it is ridiculous.
This professor takes months to hand back papers and gives little to no feedback. Lectures are extremely boring and information on slides are not full and complete even when you go to class. The professor teaches like she would rather be somewhere else and could care less to be there. If you don't have to take this class, don't waste your time.
Dr. Dumas was not the best professor that I have ever had. Her lectures were very fast paced and hard to understand. The midterm was online and very difficult. The content on it included stuff that she said wasn't going to be on it. She was also very disorganized. But she made good jokes in lecture.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but may as well be as the slides she posts are incomplete and meant to be filled in like a fill in the blank. Grades genuinely take months to come back regardless of when submitted. Exams had material she stated wouldn't be on them. Zooms through the slides and is very monotone when presenting.0/10 for a first Crim class
I dropped out when the professor said to write your thesis statement as "my thesis is..." for an essay. Lectures were terrible, extremely choppy and messy. Would not recommend if you want to learn anything.
Doesn't take attendance but you have to go to get 50% of info. Ur not allowed to email within 24 hours of getting smth back so I did and then she ghosted me until the end of the year. Also punished me for citing her slides even tho she copyrights everything and doesn't cite a single thing herself
Read of lecture slides, poor teaching style, lectures are not engaging, class attendance from the first day to the last day went from full to almost empty.
Lectures are clear and concise. She practically gives you the answers for the midterm and final. Her paper instructions are incredibly clear – students just don't want to do the work (sorry, but AI doesn't write good papers.).
Worst prof at Laurier. Monotone, lifeless lectures with zero effort or enthusiasm. Takes over 2 months to grade with minimal feedback. Attendance is mandatory, but slides are incomplete and lectures are hard to hear. Even in person, it's nearly impossible to follow. Avoid Michelle at all costs.
ive gotten A-range in all other classes ive taken at uni. keep that in mind when looking at my grade in this class.
Honestly, the hardest marking professors. Does not have a TA to help her mark, will not receive marks back until months later. Do not expect her to be much help with understanding coursework, as she does not answer her emails. Does not take questions in class. Speaks in a very monotone voice, and does not care much if you pass the class or not.
she is horrible and takes months to give things back and marks very hard compared to her teaching.
She is a horrible teacher. She takes months to give you your work back thats worth 25% of your grade. Never take this class its the worst :)
She took a long time to grade heavy assignments; her material was not clear, lectures were monotone. Made exams were made very difficult, and some of them were not related to the material. Did not provide any review or helpful tips for tests and exams.
She is honestly a terrible prof. she takes insanely long to grade things. she doesn't answer questions, ignores students trying to ask questions in class. feed back does not make sense on assignments. terrible at teaching or even just keeping peoples attention. 0/5 I will NEVER take a class with this prof again.
Definitely not my favourite prof. The lectures consist of 100 slides and she just reads off them and lists them off without elaborating. Very hard to study for midterms and exams when she does not clearly define what she is talking about. She posts slides but they are fill in the blank. Takes forever to give assignments back (2+ months usually).
This prof was terrible, she makes interesting content boring. She's an unfair grader who gives no feedback, so you have no way of improving in this class. She takes over 2 months to give back any assignment, and you have no concept of where your mark stands before the final. Do not take any classes with this prof she's awful.
Do not take this class! Genuinely the worst class I've taken and she is horrible at teaching. Lecture were just reading of the slides and she marked so hard.
teaching style was horrific for me. her slideshows are so confusing and chopped up and she reads straight from the slide, monotoned. attendance might as well be mandatory as her slides that already barely have words, are mainly abbreviations, and like random words, are fill in blanks. I 100% would not recommend taking her class. 0/10
i find the other reviews to be very harsh and not fitting of Michelle's classes. I was in both her CC100 and cc200 class and found them very straight forward. yes they can be long but the content was interesting. people saying the class was hard or she is a tough grader most likely didnt show up to the class or even try.
GPS participation for every class, the most boring and unengaging lecture I have ever taken in my entire life. Should have learned my lesson after CC100.
Prof does not engage w the students, boring lectures, slides are not really informative. grading makes not sense, i had her first year and she was alright and i used the same format that i used with her first year during my second year and she took off a lot of marks. would not rec
Very lecture heavy, way to many textbook readings along with extra required readings. Takes forever to get grades back and she is a tough marker. Exam was nothing like the review and was very difficult.
fill in the blank slides so you have to go to the lecture to get the info and quizzes throughout text book you can't avoid doing the reading
If your thinking about taking this class just don't.
Michelle Dumas is definitely the WORST professor in all of Laurier. Not only was it annoying that you had to go to every single lecture because she wouldn't post the full slideshow, but she is also the worse at grading. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS if you want to have a high average.
Just don't. Switch out of her class if you have her, and if you are thinking about it, just don't.
