She's a really good teacher, she really helped me out when I was having trouble and does everything she can to help her students out.
A little dingy, but she's great! Keep on your toes for her flashlight extra credit. Make sure you always come to class for you never know when she will give you free extra credit. Easy A!
One of the best professors teaching this course. She was always willing to help students and and kept her lectures interesting. You will learn alot about biology and have fun in the process. She is always looking for ways to give extra credit points.
Great teacher! Really fun, intertaining, down to earth! She really wants you to learn and understand, so even if you hate biology you will like this class. If you study, it's an easy A.
she's a g8t teacher with a very strong backgrnd on plants! go michelle! you rock the botany lecture and during labs you droll. it was a great semester, although a bit of work you have to work for it.she's willing to help you and have the patient to repeat herself again. it's a fun class w/field trips
The worst teacher I have ever had.
She is a great teacher. Explains things very clearly and thoroughly. She seems to really care about her students.
Great teacher but I'd have to agree with the dingy part! & that's not a lie...she does like to give unexpected extra credit! It was great! I do reccommend Michelle.
A dork but really nice and hardly any homeowrk. Her test are comprehensive and not to hard.
An excellent instructor. She's very enthusiastic about teaching, and willing to put in a lot of effort to make sure her students learn a lot.
A really enthusiastic teacher. The tests aren't hard if you know what you're doing, and she's very generous with office hours.
very considerate teacher. wants you to do well and helps you out in any way she can. gives extra credit and bring a flashlight! will do well in class if you try
she is a nice lady. gotta love her glasses! Show up and she makes lab easy. The daily quizes are pretty easy. just do the b.s. pre-labs and extra credit.
Boring, Dull, but what the Hell!-- easy!
probably the best lab teacher ever. ver interested and makes you interested. She is clear and makes sure that everybody understands. I learned so much in her class, and it wasn't even boring! took us on a really cool fieldtrip too!
Great, funny professor. She makes things easy to understand and loves her students. Highly recommend her :).
If you are going to take bio 10, take this class. She is very helpful and gives chances for extra credit. She is entertaining at times and makes jokes. One of the few teachers who like their job!
One of the most helpful teachers I have ever had. Lots of material to learn, but do the study questions and you will ace the exams! Michelle is extremely helpful when you ask questions and her lectures are very thorough. She grades very fair also. Take any bio with her!
Great teacher. interested in the subject. offers lost of extra cred. class does require a lot of work though. attendance not mandatory, just read the book and you'll do fine. lectures do over material in finer detail though. Tests are pretty easy - mostly 1-2 sentence answers and selecting true statements from a list.
Awesome teacher!!! You can tell she has a real passion for what she teaches. She tries to make it as interesting and relevant to her students as possible. Very fair teacher - do the study questions and you'll be fine. Take this teacher!!!
Awesome techer!!! Take her! Very fair and makes class interesting. You can tell she enjys what she does. I wish all teachers were like this.
wow. michelle is one of the best teachers that i have ever had. even when i wasnt her student anymore i still went to her for bio help and she was very helpful. she really loves what she teaches and her lectures are very clear. fair grader, easy class, but a lot of busy work. take her! you'll learn tons and enjoy it at the same time!
why cant more teachers be like this? she loves teaching and you learn so much. take any class with her and you cant NOT get and A!!
Michelle is a great instructor. You can tell she has a real passion for her work. She is always throughly interested in what you have to say. Plus she's really funny.Really easy/interesting class. Gives you study questions and if you just answer the q's on your own you'll pass weekly quiz without a sweat. Plenty of opportunity for easy extra credit
Michelle was awesome! I've never had an interest in science really, but she made it fun and easy. She has a sweet personality and is very helpful. Do the study questions before the tests and the extra credit and you will pass her class (take the lab with her too if possible).
Awesome teacher, she love biology! Lecture is boring yes, but she throws in a lot of explitaves that grab your attention. Extra credit is abundant, and as long as you do the study guides you will be very well prepared for the exams!
TAKE HER SHE IS WONDERFUL TEACHER . SHE IS THE BEST PERSON I HAVE EVER MET
Lectures are extremely boring, labs are even worse. They are so tedious and worthless. The book was useless--it didn't help on her study guides or anything. However, she is a sweet person and gives tons of extra credit. However, I hated this class, sometimes even more than zoology. The labs still give me nightmares. Pretty easy class though.
INSANELY wonderful teacher. Very passionate about Biology. Relates current issues to class. Tests are built for you to SUCCEED and pass. WARNING: If you are a punk who just graduated high school, don't know how to take notes, or are just going to college because your parents will kick you out of the house if you don't...you will HATE her class.
for sure the best instructor, that i have in west valley, such a nice lady, with extreme interest to help the students, she is not easy, but if she see u try for the class, she respond extremely kindly, make the lab fun, and motivate you to learn. i am bio major and 100 percent i recommend her to take bio classes. god bless her.
this class is the best! if you go and take notes, you will totally pass no problem. her lectures are interesting, i never even bought the book, we barely had any outside assignments. shes also really understanding about absesnces if your sick or something. i loved her class!!
Nice teacher, easy grade, helpful, and kind. However, she her teaching syle is a littel boring and in some cases really confusing. All u need to know is that don't study her lecture notes as the only source of studying. You mostly need to study yourself before her lectures, since she is so fast and doesn't think about whether you learn it or not!one
Extremely knowledgeable, interesting, helpful, funny. She was everything a teacher should be. I took her for lab and she made the best of a class I despise.
the most kind, fair, very helpful(will answer any confusion or question you have), field trips were fun and u learn some very interesting thing about plant. kind of disappointed that it was not hard as i imagine heheheheh.i think the subject requirement isnt hard so the class isnt too hard. need good memory to survive or do well in class
Good teacher. She knows what she's talking about. I hate Biology, but she relates it to things that matter in everyday life. I had class at 7:45 and managed to stay awake because she made it interesting. Very friendly lady. Lectures are fast paced, but available on angel. The tests are straight off the study guides. Definitely take this class :)
Awesome prof talks on your level so even if bio isn't your thing you can understand
She is so awesome. She loves science and tries her best to make it interesting. Very helpful and kind. Her class is fairly easy.. TAKE HER
BEST TEACHER EVER! I'm a bio major and to be honest was not interested at plants in the slightest but after taking Michelle's class, I'M IN LOVE! her absolute passion really rubs off on you not to mention she's funny and SO nice! one of my favorite teachers for sure!
Hard, but of course, Geary is the best. Gives good amount of x-tra credit and is the fairest teacher you will ever have in your life. She is so understanding, funny, nice, hard-working and brilliant. Do study guides, DO NOT slack off. Have good study groups! Material is very abstract and confusing. Hard to memorize, tedious but labs are awesome!
AWESOME!Had her for Cell&Plant Bio.Lots of material naturally. Very helpful about anything, she gets to know students by name and interests.Lots of extra credit, easy tests&quizzes.CellBio was much harder than plantbio. Take her for anyclass! If you take plantbio and love nature, you'll have a profound love for it even more!
I don't usually complain about hard classes, but it's like she thinks this is the only class you're taking. All of the extra papers, projects, and field trips are a complete waste of time and not interesting at all! Gives way too much to do in labs (3 hr lab and still can't finish everything). She is very nice though and will answer all questions.
Dont buy the Book. Just pay attention in lecture and do her study guides (they do take a long time so split the work) and you will get A's on her tests. Everything on the test in the study g. As long as effort is put in, she gives you 100% on the lab binders. Just form a good lab group and do the work quickly. Quirky Fun and Cool. Enjoyed her class
Don't get me wrong, this professor is super nice and pretty helpful, but I did NOT like her class! She never hands anything back, and when you ask for your grade, she never gives you an answer. This class takes a lot of work...I fell behind in my other classes because I was always doing projects for this one. Field trips/projects are pointless!
Great teacher super helpful. people cry about work but it really isn't bad. If you let it build up its a little rough i pulled this chem precal pe and I work and have a child if i can get an A anyone that loves the field can too. field trips are relevant as they expose you to things you never noticed before quality class and low stress.
Great teacher. Very nice and willing to talk about just about anything. She loves plants and shows so on the multiple field trips you do. Field trips are kind of blah, but thats debatable. She gives lots of extra credit on tests. I didnt need to buy the book, just do the study guides. Split them up with group members if you have to. Study those = a
Michelle is a spectacular teacher that cares so much about biology, and for this seminar she let's the class choose the topics she'll cover, which is amazing! This was a fascinating class, she gives plenty of extra credit, and you don't really nee dot use the book as long as you go to lecture and take notes. Take contemporary bio!
Plant side of the Cali Plants and Animals. Like Leticia, knows her stuff. I'm not a really big plant person, but on the field trips (which are literally walking every 25 steps and standing there for about 15 minutes)she made it very interesting. I would take her again, really cool teacher! I felt like she was also much nicer.
Good teacher. Labs are a bit boring and you will never accurately know your current grade in the class. That aside there is a decent amount of extra credit, and Prof Geary is very knowledgeable and approachable.
Extraordinary professor and human being. Her passion both for biology and for people shows-- on top of that, she is really approachable during office hours, which are so worth taking advantage of if you can. She helped me survive a tough semester on a personal level, taught me a lot about bio, and gave me fantastic book/life recommendations, too.
This class was hard. But I got an A, so it is possible
She is enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and has a passion for teaching. She is the best Bio instructor I have come across. She explains things very well and if you have difficulty with a concept she will go over it again. If you take excellent notes you will have all the answers to her exams. She does not try and trick you .Highly recommend
Such a great teacher!!! She knows so much about what she is teaching and teaches it well! Even if bio is not your thing she will help you to understand and help you find it interesting. She always talked about current events happening in the biology world which really helped. Her quizzes are easy and have SO much extra credit on them! Take Geary!!!
BEST BIOLOGY TEACHER EVER, LOOK NO FURTHER. She is not only extremely helpful during and after class, but she inspires her student's to look further and think beyond what is taught. Book not needed and her study guides are the best. Do them and you will get an A. People complain about her work load but that is because they are lazy and unwilling.
A VERY good professor unlike most others she has a passion for the subject! The workload is quite heavy but as long as you go to lab, and follow the study guides you can pass the class! Field trips are exciting too!
Awesome Teacher. Best Bio EVER
Professor Geary likes to teach and wants students to do well, and this comes across in the way she conducts her class. Also saves students money on textbooks by using PowerPoint. Straightforward grading with informative, humorous lectures made it an enjoyable class. It was a pleasure.
Geary is the best lab teacher at West Valley! If you show up you are guaranteed an A. She loves what she does and it shows! The weekly quizzes are super easy and you almost always get out early! I recommend!!!
only gave quizzes until the final. had very interesting lectures and discussions. she is very funny and very sweet. study guides for every quiz, if you do them you'll pass.
Truly going to miss being in her class. She is so passionate about what she does. Her lectures will not put you to sleep and her labs are fun as well. Gives occasional quizzes based upon labs but you review as a class before and they're not hard at all. 3 midterms, news articles, easy lab projects, a presentation, a species report, and final
I couldn't care less about Plant Bio but Michelle at least makes the class bearable. It's not her fault that I find the subject boring. That said, she is a very interesting character and it's my absolute pleasure to know her. Tests are very easy in my opinion if you spend time going over the study guides. I got 100% on all midterms.
Good luck trying to pass her class! Her tests are tedious-she wants you to remember every single thing from the lectures. She judges you on how well you know plant bio. Avoid! I give her C-. Forced me to change my major-her class was so tough.
Good teacher. A few homework assignments throughout the semester, and also a couple quizzes. Lectures felt quite long, take good notes and you'll be able to pass her tests.
Even though I wasn't her favorite, I still really liked this class. She's very smart, understanding, but tough. It's really awesome to have professors who are passionate about the subject, It's contagious! Her test are very fair, tough if you don't study, yet a lot of partial credit. One of my favorite classes!
Michelle is awesome, for all the people saying she sucks, you're delusional. She is incredibly smart and so down to earth. Tests are BIOLOGY exams so expect to know your info! I didn't open the book once and got an A. Study the lecture notes and do the labs/homework assignments. Offers tons of opportunities for extra credit as well!
If you want a professor who replies to emails and updates your grades throughout the semester-ahem, or even ONCE- do not take a class with Geary. I don't know if its the same with her other classes, but she never responds to any of mine or my classmate's emails in Bio 42. Wish there was a different prof. w/better communication with students.
Super sweet lady. She wants you to learn and succeed. If you show up and do the lab work she gives you a good grade. She gives you tons of extra credit and gives quiz study guides. Take her!
She is an amazing teacher. Clear, concise, gets down to the point and is more than willing to offer help if needed. 10/10 will take her again.
some of you must just be stupid or something, honestly, this woman is BRILLIANT. Its a course for biology majors, obviously it's not going to be easy. Yes, you have to work for the A but its doable. tests are fair/easy, don't buy a book, use her slides and do the practice tests, yes she responds to emails, she is very sweet, always willing to help.
I cannot recommend Michelle enough! She is so passionate about the topics she teaches that she makes plants the most interesting part of my day. If you attend lectures and do the practice tests you will get an A. No homework and labs are relevant to what we are learning in class. Lots of extra credit opportunities and accepts late work.
The move online was not great with Geary. Shes amazing in person, but graded maybe 5 hws throughout the semester and put questions exactly the same as the hw on the tests. Got 100% on all hw at the end, but 1/2 credit on tests. Tests harder when switched to online. Just be prepared for the amount of qs on the test in the short amount of time.
Geary is fine but this class is HARD for me. You have to know chem/bio VERY WELL to even do slightly well. I feel like we are all over the place, teach ourselves, no backbone or structure to what we need to study. IM LOST. I don't recc. this class unless you're very knowledgable in chem/bio. Quizzes are HARD/tricky. I wish i chose plant bio.
Geary is a great person but her teaching style didnt match with me. Tests are very hard. You have to think beyond what we learn. Her YT lectures are awful & i don't learn much so i have to read the textbook that takes 4ever & is hard to read. Poor textbook choice. Labs/hw help with grades so dont be put off with the amount. i dont recommend.
Absolutely my favorite professor, but the class was notoriously difficult and it lived up to its expectations. Make sure to not let yourself down at the beginning and get all the points possible. Best teacher, however!
Super slow grader. Literally didn't grade almost anything the whole semester. Not sure if it was because it was online or not. Make sure to listen to lecture videos carefully and take notes. Actual lectures are good for details but not that important overall. Don't worry if you do average/poorly on exams, participation brings grade up really well.
Does not input assignments throughout the entire semester so your grade may appear lower than it will be at the end of the course. No use of a textbook, lots of reading assignments and projects, but the extra points help. If I take her again I would prefer it to be an in-person class, as I do not believe her classes are built for online.
She is one of my favorite professors i've ever had. The material is hard but she makes in genuinely fun to learn and relates it to current real world issues. She's super understanding and works hard to make sure you succeed!
Many assignments, Labsters, and 1 group project. No clear grading criteria. Last minute w/ grades. 2 part exams - MC & short response - limited time w/ LOTS of ?'s. Low class avgs. ATTEND EACH CLASS MEETING - participation counts w/ Zoom poll & boosts grade. Pointless semester long plant project with tough data analysis for cell bio. Nice overall.
Professor Geary is extremely knowledgeable in her subjects and is very enthusiastic teaching them, even online. She's a joy to talk to outside of class and offers opportunities for out of class experience in research. Her exams are difficult, but if you get a C avg on all exams and do ALL the HW/Labs you'll get an A. Fantastic Professor.
Great professor at West Valley! I took her online class for Cell Bio in Spring 2021 too and for Botany which was a hybrid class. She really cares about the students and your success and is definitely willing to help you out. I would definitely take her again.
Dr. Geary is a great person and is incredibly knowledgable in her field. Cell bio is a tough class based on a lot of initial memorization and then building off it so biggest thing is to make sure you ask questions. Beware that she does not put in a single grade the entire semester so you will have no idea how you did in the class until it is over.
Michelle favors a hybrid class system with lectures being youtube videos and "lecture period" on campus being review. Her boring videos and take notes gets old fast. Study guides are key. Do all assingment and you will be fine even with lower test scores. Don'tmiss exam days because her online makeups are much harder than normal. Easy wtih effort.
I took her for plant and bio and absolutely loved her. She clearly loves her students, is so inspirational, easy grader, great lecturer, very funny, extremely passionate about plant, environment, and cell bio. She made me more resolved to go into a Bio major & changed my view on plant bio. She makes me so excited to be a bio major.
Professor Geary is an OK professor. Her lectures are terrible. 12-minute videos. During lecture time in class, she reviews 4 main points and then ends class early. Labs are not designed well either. Procedures are not clear. I've taken Geary for plant bio and cell bio. She does not respond to emails. Class is easy but the professor is not the best
1. Quickly preview LOs 2. Watch the lecture videos and PAY ATTENTION a. Take notes on things you really do not understand or need to know 3. Supplement with outside material eg Textbook, YouTube, 4. Make Anki cards using LOs 5. Attend discussion session a. Ask questions & participate. 6. Review Anki cards everyday
The lecture format needs getting used to, so take time to understand it and you're golden. Dr. Geary cares about her students, and during review she makes sure to be thorough to ask post-lecture questions. Tests are at the perfect difficulty. Labs are straightforward and reports too. She includes research in this class you can put on your resume
Best prof I've had. She's amazing and very caring towards students. Lots of opportunities for ec. Tests are hard but she curves it.The yt lectures you can honestly just put them on 2x speed and get through the prequiz easily. Go to every lecture and lab they are both important for tests. For a 5 unit class the workload is pretty easy not much hw.
I took both her environmental bio. lecture and lab and I enjoyed it as a non-bio major. There were no exams for the lab & lecture except for the final, and there were at least two group presentations and one individual. Majority of grades are based on participation and notes you take in class based off movies and lectures.
Dr. Geary is a wonderful professor. She is friendly, brilliant, and incredibly kind and she is my favorite instructor on campus. Good lecturer, tests are easy considering this is a 5 unit major class, lots of participation/group credit. One thing is she doesn't really respond to emails, you will have to hunt her down during office hours.
I took Ms. Geary's plant bio class in spring 2024. She became one of my favorite professors. She makes the class very fun and engaging, both during lectures and labs. I love when professors take classes on field trips, and we went on a few. Most of the assignments we did were the lab reports that she checked off at the end of each class
Dr. Michelle Geary is AWESOME! I've truly learned so much about plant biology and can't wait to apply it to my future research endeavors. I highly recommend seeing if you can take part in her various research groups as they are excellent for team-building and future field and lab experience. I am always excited to attend lectures and learn.
Very good professor! Labs are not too hard and lectures are good as well, though I did not fully like her lecture style. Regardless, good class and has a manageable workload. She's easy to reach by email outside of class and gives great feedback on many assignments! Very caring and definitely wants you to succeed.
