Not very organized, writes lecture notes as we go. Tests are ok, just go to class, weekly quizzes in discussion based on vocab and concepts.

Good lecturer that teaches the material well. Helps prepare for the exams by giving study guides and practice tests. Tests itself is pretty hard but fair. Grading system sucks!
The lectures are long and boring. She expects you to remember a lot of detail on exams. She curves in the end even though she initially says she won't, so it is easy to pass but hard to get an A. Practice exams help with a few of the questions on exams. She is nice but she isn't always able to answer your questions. Overall okay.
very sad that her guest lecturers are so much more interesting than her lectures. Long and boring 2 hr lectures with too much details kills the class.its ridiculous how much detail she expects you to know. exams are tricky with multiple correct answers on MC, but you have to justify why your answer is correct. seems unfriendly and unapproachable.
VERY organized class! lectures were pretty useless..but labs were so FUN. professors igo and nelson were so helpful and T.A/tutors were not intimidating. made lab a fun learning environment. everything you need to know for midterms was in the notebook/ppt slides. a lot of stuff to hand in, so stay on top of that, otherwise not a hard class at all!
loved this class!
She says over and over that the class will emphasize (and test on) general concepts and understanding of those general concepts. But her tests are very specific and not related to the homework at all. Closest to test questions are clicker questions, which she doesn't do a great job explaining even if the whole class gets the question wrong.
Lectures are powerpoint which are rushed through. You should definitely review them before lecture so you're not rushing through notes. Clicker questions should be participation points, not points if you get them right. And the tests are way too hard. Everything feels like a trick question
While she meant the best and put in a lot of effort, ultimately she did not teach this class well. Her teaching is obscure and really just unclear. Her questions DO all seem like trick questions because she kinda sucks at making tests...often answers to test problems turn out to be "but answer B is MORE correct". No curve but grade cushioned.
Powerpoints are posted before class, and her study guides/ tests are pretty much the learning goals in her powerpoints. Tests were extremely clear and key points were emphasized in her lecture. Very knowledgeable and answered questions well. Go to lecture, take notes, then read the book to fill in the blanks. I recommend taking her!
Really drove home that you need to understand instead of trying to memorize - tests reflected that philosophy and were fair if you were able reach that level of learning. Clickers force you to go to class but they are a grade booster. Could talk a little faster and have more concise powerpoints, but would take again.
Easiest professor I've ever had by far. Take her if you want a good grade to go with your good understanding of bio.
I loved Professor Igo. Her exams were made in a way that if you understood the material you got questions right and she really tried to minimize straight up memorization. I would definitely take again.
This professor is really nice but I feel like her way of teaching is not so good. I was clueless during exams even though I studied a lot. I felt like she was making the subject unique by adding her "own flavor" to it. This class would be good if her exams would be less confusing.
MT1 120150, MT2 144150, Final 364400 88 A- studies definitions from book only before exams. same for final. missed no discussion. (learned more stuff from disc than lec.) some identical prob from practice exams. understand key concepts and ask questions on discussion. you dont really need lectures if you understand everything from disc
Professor Igo is an extremely responsible instructor who really cares about her students. She always email me back fast with good feedback. Also, she is very willing to answer all my questions. And she lowers the grade cutoffs after finals. Nice! However, she has wearied lectures structures and her tests are out of track from BIS2A.
This class was horrible. The tests are way too challenging compared to what she goes over in lecture. Her lectures are all over the place and she never really answers any questions she poses to the class. She has way too high of expectations. Unreasonable to not curve. Horrible class. Horrible professor. AVOID!!!
She doesn't teach in lecture, you need to learn the material yourself beforehand. The lectures felt pointless to me. I read the textbook and I felt like less than 50% of the material was actually on the tests. Nota Bene assignments three times a week, which were also pretty pointless!!
Her lectures are clear but her exams are hell on earth. I studied everyday for this class, I read the textbook, watched numerous youtube videos and went through powerpoints to master her material. I felt like I could get a 100% on her exam by the time I was done studying. Guess what I got? A 71%. Her questions are conceptual based.
I think they are implementing a new way to teach BIS2A that is more interactive. The material is dense, but she and other professors wrote a FREE online book that students get to read. Lots of assignments so manage your time, but she makes slides and study guides after each lecture so that you could really understand whats going on
She always spends the entire lecture telling us what she expects from us to understand, but she does not really teach anything. Worst professor I have ever had in UC Davis.
First midterm had average of 109/150. HW is tedious with online comments, disc manual, vocab pages, and online quizzes every week. Test is more conceptual than memorization (20 MC, 2 free response). Review all pre-lec/post-lec study guides and do practice exams. No curve but there's extra credit. Midterms (15%) final (35%) HW (15%) Disc (20%)
She gives pre-lect nota bene assigntments in addition to the regular discussion assignments. During lectures, she has practice problems that are sometimes also on exams.
She doesn't curve anything so good luck with that. Her tests are worded really weird and she's super specific about her answers and usually the answers are more of her opinion. The textbook isn't required but it's definitely good to have since she's pretty bad in lecture. tbh go talk to your ta's if you're having trouble bc igo is really bad.
She is not the best teacher but the class isn't too bad as long as you study a little bit and understand basic concepts. All tests are almost all multiple choice but she phrases questions in a way that can be tough. There were a few instances where answers were marked wrong because "one answer was more correct". Just do the hw and you'll be fine.
She's not the best but no BIS 2A professor is that great, you could have someone MUCH worse. I found lectures to be helpful but some people got by without it. I don't really blame her for how hard the class is & some of the dumb things you have to do. But she does stress that you will be tested on applying your knowledge, not just memorizing facts
The professor was nice and works to help the students. She provided everything you needed to do well in the class, including lecture slides, podcasts, and supplementary material. This class is known to be a hard lower div to take, but you'll do fine as long as you keep up and put in the time. Definitely go to review sessions and workshops.
She has received high education which may make her think self-studying is very important. You have to read her pre-study guide. What is more, you have to make sure you know all of it. In lecture, she provides lecture problems. However, she may not tell you the answer and just let you think and discuss which makes people confused.
Quizzes+nota bene+discussion should be easy points, just don't forget about it. Tests are only difficult because of phrasing and often unclear answers, i.e.;A and B are both correct but A is MORE correct. Overall she was alright, but left me frustrated. Study the concepts from practice tests, know the learning goals, and do post study guides.
I found her lectures really helpful, she sometimes drops hints about tests. I suggest reading the textbook to gain a better understanding of the concepts. She has her own style of text questions so DO ALL practice exams and post lectures. Make sure you stay on top of nota bene, discussion packets, and study guides and you will be just fine.
She was an alright professor; accessible outside of class and willing to work with students. Provided many resources for students. However, her midterms are the worst exams ever. They're extremely difficult and are hard to prepare for (even with countless hours of studying). Overall, she's not bad, but prepare for her pretty awful exams.
Although she knows a lot about the subject matter, Dr. Igo does not teach the material clearly. You will definitely depend on your TA's for deeper understanding. Midterms were very challenging and did not match lecture material. Would not recommend this prof for bis 2a. Make sure to go to office hours to get help because it is offered every day!
Spends so much lecture time talking about useless things. Don't learn anything in the beginning half of the lecture time. When we're burnt out listening to her clicker/midterm/notabene speech, she starts to talk about bis. Online reading due before class where you'rere forced to make comments, useless unless you actually have something to say.
SERIOUSLY AWFUL. Her exams are the hardest, they completely throw you off even if you do know all the material. DO NOT TAKE.
I really didn't think Igo was that bad of a profesor. This class is a huge time investment but you have things buffering your grade other than just midterms. The midterms are not that difficult. Just do all the practice and pre and post guides. If you actually read and annotate the NB assignments its a good study tool.
A very average professor. She did well enough with how many students she had to teach, and I heard the other professors are the same or worse than her. HW due each lecture where you comment on readings. She expects you to read the assignments and understand them completely. Little extra credit and dropped assignments helps. Pretty difficult tests.
Very poor teacher. Assigns lengthy readings that need to have comments on every reading due at the beginning of every lecture. These readings are the only way I learned, as her lectures are useless and frequently not relevant to readings (Factiotti makes these not her). Also assigns additional homework. Graded clicker questions every lecture.
I like Dr. Igo because she teaches biology in a very conceptual manner, in a way that I can understand (she doesn't teach a lot of specific details). Her test questions are usually pretty clear and concise. If you actually study, you will pass.
Please do not take professor Igo. I only looked at the good reviews and they are not accurate. Not only does she spend 30+ minutes on announcements but she also doesn't know her material. When prompted to answer a question about her lecture material she was condescending and uninformative. Please please use this rating as a sign not to take her!
Igo provides a lot of material to learn from. Her lectures weren't helpful if you didn't spend some time reading first, because she assumes you know the material she's about to cover.
Hardest class I've taken so far. Makes Math 17b/Chem 2b look like a joke in comparison. Her midterms/final are mostly application questions. If you are bad with those types of questions DO NOT TAKE HER. "What would happen to x if y were removed?" There was a lot of reading that was assigned every week. Her lectures aren't clear either.
Dr. Igo is an extremely wonderful professor. To be successful you just have to really listen to her, she's clear on what she wants you to know. You can tell she speaks with passion, and that's always contagious and she continuously changes course in order to accommodate her students needs. There's a lot of hw but it really boosts up your grade.
Dr. Igo really cares about her students and gives them multiple opportunities to make up lost points by making HW out of less points than it is, offering extra credit on tests, and giving a few points of extra credit outside class. Read the assignments carefully and do the study guides. Easy A if you do the work.
There was SO much reading in this class and you'll have to put in a lot of time if you want to do well. There are three reading assignments per week along with a weekly discussion assignment as well as worksheets for discussion and additional homework assignments. I would stay away from her class if possible if you aren't comfortable with biology.
Prior knowledge in Bio definitely helps. Nice person, cares about student success, willing to put in her own time. Lots of reading, clicker questions for credit at lectures. Generous grading criteria. Midterms and final exam were not difficult imo. Do the reading, attend lecture/discussion, read questions carefully, go to reviews and you'll pass.
There was a lot of reading for this class, but you can't avoid that in Bis 2A. Lectures are helpful because she goes over concepts that people found difficult and over short answer material. The midterms were very similar to the practice exams and study guides, so use all the resources you have. Go to class and do the reading and you will do fine.
The worst part about Igo's class is her test, a lot of her questions are MCAT questions or just very similar in the sense of wording. I had questions about the test when I got mine back and even my TA had trouble answering it. Also she has open questions at the end of every midterms which are worded incredibly confusing.
I have only had this professor for two weeks and she is a terrible lecturer. She expects you to understand the material purely from the reading she assigns and she does not further explain it in lecture, so there is really no point in attending. Avoid her if you can.
AVOID Dr. IGO, she does not go into depth with the material and often looks confused throughout her very own powerpoint during lectures. I would say to skip lectures, but she uses clicker questions for points during lectures so try not miss any points as possible. The tests contain more material than what she actually covers in class.
First of all, this class is run in a strange way where one professor teaches the class and another writes/proctors the exams. I have no idea why this is the case. There is quite a bit of reading that goes extremely in depth about concepts. However, in lecture, only the very basics are addressed. The professor assumes a pretty good foundation. Avoid
Expects you to learn by reading NB, not what she teaches in lecture she said this. Tests you on stuff she didn't teach. Teaches simple stuff in NB and lecture but asks super in depth questions on the tests. Assigns HW that no one knows how to complete not even the TA's. Overcomplicates concepts and doesn't explain anything.
I would not take this professor again. Her lectures are super vague she expects you to learn everything off of NB readings. I learned more from attending the BIS2A workshops than from her lectures. I felt pretty confident about the content from going to workshops but her tests were awful. She doesnt curve. Dont take this class.
Imagine doing the readings, going to all the workshops, TA office hours for clarification, and not still be able to do well on exams due to unfair and poorly worded exam questions. Homework and discussion were just busy work. Although you may think you understand the material, nothing can really prep you for the exams. Avoid at all cost, trust me.
Just dont do this to yourself.
I went through the entire study guide, readings, lecture slides, clicker Q's, joined a study group, went to workshops, & office hours but still did bad on exams She has pre/post lecture study guides with like a 100 learning objectives she expects you to master. She doesn't curve which is insane because the average MT scores were really low.
She is nice!! She provides pre-study guides and post study guides that help you prepare for both midterms and final. There are two midterm exams. The second midterm and final have extra credits . Textbook is not required and Readings are posted online, which involve some suggested discussions she expect you to understand for the exams.
The discussion TA's are heavenly I learned more from them then Igo. My TA was a God send and I'm only passing the class because of her. You will mostly be depending on them so if you get a bad TA then RIP. Lectures are useless and you wont learn anything because she doesn't teach anything. I would say skip but she has graded clicker questions.
Let's be honest, it's bio so there's a lot of material and reading which is understandable but the way she manages the class is horrible. There are so many things you need to do and they don't even relate to each other. I like biology and don't afraid putting the work for school but she makes it so bad. A V O I D H E R A T A L L C O S T S.
Went into each test as prepared as possible and still barely passed with a 70 on both midterms. She doesn't test on the material, asks questions that are impossibly ambiguous and then doesn't curve. Discussion sections are helpful, definitely learned more from my TA than from Igo but still do NOT recommend her class. Would give 0/5 if I could.
Just don't do it. Find yourself a better teacher.
If you want to be constantly stressed out and cry then this is the class for you. But seriously she is awful. She has this ability to make easy concepts hard to understand. The tests are impossible to study for because she words them unfairly. The textbook for the class literally said if you don't understand just convince yourself you understand.
Igo's lectures are next to useless yet her exams are difficult. I believe she resuses some test questions from past and other professors' exams (don't quote me on this, though). However, doing a bunch of practice exams helped a bunch. Nota Bene readings were only slightly helpful, and discussion was a waste of time. Anyway, avoid if possible.
Yeah she was pretty bad, but honestly, Bis2A seems pretty content-heavy either way. If you end up taking her, STAY ON TOP OF YOUR CRAP. Take notes on nota bene. At least skim through her lecture slides because she reuses the clicker questions on her tests. Pay attention in discussion, you'll learn more there than in lecture. Don't fall behind.
Dr. Igo is probably one of the worst professors at UC Davis. The lecture slides were the most useless ever. The podcasts were supposed to help, but I barely used them. However, her exams are fair, according to my TA,and I aced one of the exams, so it's only bad because it's a point based class out of 1000 points. Just collect all the points possible
Dr. Igo is the worst professor I've had so far. Self taught the entire class. Learned more from my godsend TA than her. Don't do this to yourself!
I recommend you put reminders for NB readings and NB discussion hw's. You must attend lecture to get all clicker points/course points. To save you from bad notes (prof moves fast), go to lectures for clicker, listen to podcast and re-look at lecture slides on Canvas and take notes at your own pace. What dropped my grade was clicker and Final exam.
Igo's lectures are extremely vague and superficial, making them completely useless, but you have to attend because of the clicker questions. Basically, you have to learn everything from the long and tedious readings. The exams are tough because the questions are ambiguous and poorly worded. The class isn't curved either. Overall terrible class.
Dr. Igo is an awful professor. BIS 2A is not a difficult class, but she makes it as difficult as it can possibly be. She was incorrect multiple times throughout the quarter and would not admit it. Her lectures are completely pointless, yet you have to go to them because she uses iClickers. YOU NEED to take notes on NB. She's as bad as it gets.
Take notes on lecture slides once she posts them on Canvas. While some slides are vague/unhelpful, there were a decent amount of slides that helped clarify processes we learned in a straightforward manner. Treat post-lecture questions as mini-quizzes (I took them before exams). Workshops are helpful & I treated learning objectives as study guide ?s
Overall, Dr. Igo was a terrible professor. Her lectures were extremely unhelpful, and she would never explain concepts well. On the upside, the midterms and the final exam were fair, and she provided many resources for us to study from.
Dr. Igo is a very poor lecturer. This is a classic case of an Ivy League educated teacher who couldn't teach a high school biology course. The exams are based heavily on the readings. Also, the postlecture quizzes are a must if you want to do well. Save yourself some time, give your clicker to your friend and stay in bed for an extra hour.
Igo was very understanding in office hours and is willing to help students. The NB readings covered all of the material on the tests, and the tests were mostly fair and predictable. If you've taken chem, the energy story/design challenge sections are a waste of time though. Lectures included cool facts/applications of material to help remember it.
I love Dr. Igo! You have to go to lectures and do all the online readings in order to understand the concepts in the ways that she wants you to. Office hours are a must do; she has a much better chance at answering questions and more thoroughly explaining the topics. If you don't go to office hours, then there's not much she can do to help you.
Legitimately one of the worst teachers I've had at Davis so far. If you expect a high-quality teaching experience, look elsewhere. She contradicted herself regularly throughout lecture, her exams were filled with trick questions, and attending class was essentially useless. Just don't do this to yourself. You'd have better luck switching majors.
This was an interesting class but the way we did online readings was just stupid. The tests were extremely hard and i think she could care less about your individual learning. She just wants people to know what she does is hard but doesn't dumb it down for the rest of us regular people. Not impossible to pass if you work really hard.
I found this class so unnecessarily hard. Dr. Igo makes her tests ridiculously hard, with NO CURVE. Discussion sections are basically another lecture& while her lecture slides are posted online they offer you nothing. You're graded on the accurateness of clicker questions. Worst quarter of my life when I took her class, TA workshops are helpful tho
literally everything about this class is F'ed up. FOUR EXAMS, Mandatory online readings that are graded for participation based on your comments, discussion assignments graded on ACCURACY and weekly quizzes. None of this helps considering the lectures are incredibly superficial and don't really teach anything.
igo is a terrible professor. her lectures are not helpful at all. the first midterm had questions from subsequent lectures, aka material that hasn't even been covered yet. her survey for the exam as well as regrade requests both had extremely condescending questions like "how many hours did you spend reading the material?" five star reviewsfake
You will regret having BIS 2A with Igo. Her lectures are useless and boring. The Discussion is just another lecture, but at least you can learn something. The first mid-term assess things that you will learn next week's discussion. The average of the mid-term is D, and she claims there will be no curve. Worse professor ever.
Her lectures don't explain anything, every week waste my 3 hours listening to them; reading assignments are stupid but it's the only place where you actually learn things; exams are hard and she has multiple choice questions worth double but don't offer partial credit.
NO CURVE. Professor Igo is the worst professor I have ever had. The readings are ridiculously long but at least they teach you something. Her lectures are pointless. NB comments are boring and don't help or teach anything. First midterm was fairly standard for a Biology class but grading without a curve is downright ridiculous. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
Everything everyone else has been saying about Igo has been watered down. Words cannot even begin to describe how bad of a professor Igo is. She doesn't prepare you at all for her exams where the average of the first exam was a 60%. This class doesn't curve at all and she is dismissive of requests answering academic questions.
Igo's lectures are super unclear and don't relate to the exam material in a fair manner. Most of the things you need to know must be learned on your own. She doesn't provide much material to really get the things you need to know down. Additionally, the labs are super unhelpful as they cover the most basic knowledge of biology.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! Lectures are literally pointless you don't learn from it. You learn from your TA and yourself. So unclear, and the class is NOT curved even tho midterm average is 60%. She doesn't prepare you for the exams as they are extremely hard and multiple choice questions are worth 5pts. Miss a Question you basically lose 5%.
Tons of reading, lectures are useless, 4 test within 8 weeks of teaching, and no curve. Wouldn't recommend at all.
Just dont take her. Her lectures are extremely vague and unclear. I am basically teaching myself this class. Her exam questions are SO wordy and the test average in this class is not passing. There is no curve either. Im not sure how the other profs are for BIS2A but take literally anyone else
WORSE PROFESSOR EVER. IF THE MEAN OF THE MIDTERMS BARELY PASSING, ITS NOT THE STUDENTS FAULT. NO CURVES AT ALL TOO.
I do not know how this woman got a PhD. She is entirely unable to explain topics clearly, and I have not been able to understand a single one of her lecture slides. She is unhelpful even in office hours. The average of our midterm was a D- and she offers no option to curve. Reading comments are mandatory, and the website crashes often.
Let's tell an energy story about Dr. Igo! Her lectures are lazy, unorganized, and you can tell she would rather be doing anything else. Midterms are extremely difficult, filled with typos, and way more difficult than practice material. The online textbook is written by a 3-year-old. PLEASE take Bis 2A with a different professor.
Worst prof at UCD I've had so far. She can't teach and on top of that, the exams are too difficult. Lectures are useless. Best way to learn is reading the long readings and going through learning objectives. Even despite that, exams are way too difficult and there is no curve at all despite the averages being a D. AVOID HER!
Worse Professor I have ever had. Did not teach whatsoever and test were unfairly difficult. Very unforgiving when it comes to turning in assignments. Also, very rude and unapproachable. I don’t believe she went to Harvard
Class is insanely hard and tests are difficult with the averages being 60s-70s every time. Her lectures do not help you at all and the NB readings, while useful, are insanely long and take way too much time. If you have a bad TA, this class is essentially a death sentence. Doesn't curve either which is INSANE
Awful. No matter how much we studied the exams are horrid. Too much reading, no curve when avg is 50-60. If you want to pass attend discussion, do NB, know the learning objectives, do post lecture study guides and practice test. Her lectures watch those on 2xs speed she’ll say like 1 important thing and brush by it. Nightmare course 4 MTs+final.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
worse professor I have had. She shows minimal care towards her students. If the class average is barely passing and is not curved, she should not be blaming her students. Before the second midterm, she made us watch a video which basically says that you need to put in the work to learn when the previous midterm scores were barely passing.
Her lectures are extremely useless. I literally learned everything from the TAs. She drops one exam + offers extra credit on her exams. But, she directly jumps from elementary biology to mcat topics without covering anything in between. She kinda expects you to just know everything. Not a bad class if you don't rely on the professor.
The worst professor ever. No compassion for students and wants to make lives harder.
This professor, and therefore class, has been atrocious. The lectures are useless, and you'll need to do a lot of self-studying and try to figure out what might be on the midterm. The averages for all the midterms have been failing, but she doesn't curve. I can't help but think she doesn't want us to pass.
I don't understand all the other reviews. The prof clearly tells us what the exam is going to be on. Use the learning objectives as a tool to prepare for the exams. Always read nota bene first before going to lecture. I can assure you that reading nota bene will make it easier to under her lectures. It's biology. It's going to be hard.
im sure youve read all the other reviews. if shes the only professor available for bis 2a rn...dont even bother taking it.
Igo’s lectures are not particularly helpful and oftentimes I would find it a better use of my time to just go to discussions and read about the subjects myself. Her tests are the real downside of this class because there were 4 midterms and a final. Each of the tests also contain a lot of confusing questions on topics that were not covered well.
Lectures are confusing and disorganized, often including unnecessary information that isn't tested on the exams. Her homework assignments are poorly made and hard to navigate, and are just in general a waste of time. Her grading system is very confusing and unclear. The exams often don't match the material that was taught in class.
Igo's lectures are so empty and provide no valuable takeaways for you to take notes on. She physically can't teach. I am sure she is a very nice person outside of teaching, but her teaching methods are just ineffective. Plus it's really hard to stay motivated when she refuses to curve even when the average is like a D.
RUNNNNN
Igo does not care about the quality of her lectures, but cares when people accuse her to be lazy and bad. Thats when she gets defensive.
You need to be able to know what questions to ask in order for her to explain in an understandable way. I think she expected us to grasp concepts right after lecture, and if you don't get it, you don't got it for the rest of the quarter. Class average was beyond low and we have a MT and final on the same day :')
Be ready to teach yourself most of the material and READ. Lectures were not useful AT ALL. I learned most of the content from my discussion TA and the readings. Test questions are weighted very heavily, so getting a few questions wrong on each MT/final will lower your grade significantly.
escape from Igo!
The lectures are pointless as the readings teach much more than that. During final review, she would always go off on a tangent and never answer the original question. Her practice exams and things along the line somehow always have errors or typos. How does that happen so frequently? Have one TA do the practice test and you'll see the errors ???
Pointless lectures, incorrect answer key constantly. Just an annoying class you have to deal with. She tried to cram an entire chapter in two lectures before finals
I only attended five lectures becuase I felt I was wasting my time. The discussion and readings were helpful enough that I have an A leading up to the final. She's very defensive and has a ton of mechanisms in place to avoid any self-fault. On the regrade form she says you can't question the validity of a mc question even though there were errors.
Professor Igo is an extremely horrible lecturer. Her lectures offered little to no use when it came to the exams. This was evident as the averages for the exams were a D- sometimes even bordering F's. Further, BIS 2A was completely self taught with only the discussions and textbook helping me in understanding the material. Avoid this professor!!
Dr. Igo's lectures are completely useless. I learned most of the contents from discussion and reading. There are four midterms in total and each multiple-choice question weights a lot. There is no curve for the class despite the average being very low.
Just read through all the other 1 star reviews. Bad lectures, makes a lot of mistakes, and is not productive or helpful. Igo is not a good professor or lecturer. Would not recommend having Igo as a professor unless you want to suffer
this is a hard class and you have to do a lot of self teaching. The lectures are not super informative but they give you an idea of what she wants you to emphasize learning. do the readings and go to discussions or you for sure wont learn enough to pass. Hard tests and she words the questions super weird so do a lot of practice problems.
Professor Igo is nice but does not lecture super well, her exams are extremely difficult. They are worded in a really confusing way. It is really easy to get lost in the work especially since you basically have to teach yourself the material. Had a midterm and final on the same day.. Drops lowest midterm, class has NO curve :(
very lazy professor. posts review material two days or maybe a day before a midterm. You really do not have time to prepare for a midterm.
the worst teacher i've had at uc davis so far. each question on midterms is weighted so heavily that it is nearly impossible to get a good grade in this class. insanely long readings assigned every other day, and test questions are often not aligned with readings/study guides. good luck :/
Please do yourself a favor and avoid at all costs. 4 midterms on top of a final and the tests are worded in the most confusing way. If you miss one question you drop a huge percentage on the tests. Lectures are very confusing and the professor doesn't show sympathy to students when the test averages were so low (50-60%). Disappointing :(
readings are heavy and long-winding. really have no idea why Igo doesn't prefer Lehninger or Life 12ed.
Dr. Igo is actually the single-handedly worst professor I have had at Davis so far. The averages on our midterms were all around 60% because the class is all self taught. Lectures and test questions are irrelevant to each other. The fact I did better in Ochem should say something about her teaching
I don't care how good of a student you think you are, Bis 2a with Dr. Igo will beat you down and make you feel miserable. She is incapable of teaching whatsoever, her lectures are incredibly convoluted and impossible to follow. You must learn from either dense walls of texts that she assigns or from YouTube. This class is awful and the tests suck.
I found that her lectures were relatively easy to understand and were a good overview or summary of the material that was expected for the exams, although it did not cover every little concept. The material that was to be tested was clearly marked ahead of time. This class did have some organizational problems, that made the class chaotic at times.
Dr. Igo is really bad at teaching. Her lecture used to be useful before midterm 3, but last two weeks were awful. All her lecture doesn't help you learning. It's hard to imagine how could you learn a new topic within last two lectures. Too much exams. Three midterms is enough, but if the fourth midterm is at final week, this makes nonense.
There is nothing I can say about this professor that hasn't already been said. My advice is to pay attention and ask questions during discussions. Overall, do not miss discussions since they are more relevant to the tests than the lectures are. For lecture material, the readings are more helpful than the lectures. TAs can help you, but Igo won't.
Highly don't recommend. Lectures are very unclear and make absolutely no sense. The Reading Assignments NB are very helpful, but crash due to overload of people commenting. This class is VERY TEST HEAVY. Even if you get 100% on all discussion Assignments and quizzes, but do not do well on 4 Midterms, you practically only will get a C. Goodluck!
SHE DOES NOT HAVE A 3!! PLEASE DROP HER, but IF YOU HAVE TO take her, the only way to pass this class is to go to discussions and use lecture time to do the online readings. Lectures are horrible, no use whatsoever. She can't teach and the tests are unfairly hard. Not to mention her side chick Easlon, who grades our tests, is also awful at her job
Watch out. The class and the grading rubrics are a mess. Lectures are a waste of time, because she spends them talking about irrelevant material. I got a B in this class because of a mistake by the graders and they couldn’t fix it because they only updated grades after the final grades were due. This Professor is a trap. Avoid at all costs.
The only reason I got an A was because of my amazing TA during discussion who taught me everything I needed to know for the midterms. The lectures are inconsistent with the schedule and material we learn in Nota Bene, which is the unofficial textbook. ALWAYS take notes on NB readings (cannot stress this enough)! Lectures are useless in this class.
She seems nice as a person, but as a professor her lectures are incomprehensible and not even worth attending. 4 exams + a final with averages being 50-60%. Exams took well over a week to grade despite being mostly MC and cutoffs aren't lowered. 2 discussions and 1 exam get dropped and lectures were recorded.
her lectures are awful and it's extremely difficult to follow along. i learned everything from my TA during discussions. the tests were hard and despite having low averages there is no curve or cutoff. avoid her at all costs.
one of the worst professors i've had at davis. she is terrible at lecturing, and the online reading assignments were incredibly long and had information that was never covered in class or on tests. the tests were so tricky and didn't properly test your knowledge in the class. loved my TA though. i wish i didn't attend lecture and studied on my own.
The class is solely based off from the textbook. Be prepared to read, and the test is not curved, even though her the test average is close to 60% every time. The whole class is not organized and hard to follow. She changes up the syllabus when she wants to. She also had midterm and the final exam on the final exam day, which is absurd.
Prepare to pay UC-rate tuition for courses taught by phony researchers way out of their element and miserable graduate students that barely understand their own material. Completely relied on YouTube as these so-called professionals fail at summarizing the most trivial of concepts. There are good ones, but not many. The biggest scam in history.
Her lectures are very very unorganized and it is hard to keep up with what to focus on exactly.
Plenty of works that have to be done for this course. And the exams are extremely hard. I got A- before final, and dropped to B- after that. Lectures are not clear. Do not choose her.
the combo of igo AND easlon was the ultimate set up for failure. I would attend lectures and walked out feeling like i learned NOTHING she just talks but doesnt get the message across. It was a horrible class and the TA was no help :/ overall do not recommend AT ALL.
You can go to all the lectures and walk out like you learned nothing. My TA carried our section. There is too much information on slides that is unnecessary for exams that are only about 20 questions and worth many points. Midterm 4 was given ALONG with the final.
The class is kinda disorganized and it's often unclear what is expected of the students. The lectures do not cover much solid material, so you end up relying on the readings. The readings are heavy on information that isn't covered on the tests. I understand the value of learning how to self-teach, but we were not given inclass resources to do so.
No textbook, instead uses Nota Bene. You will be required to read up to three chapters a week, making comments. The grading for comments is up to the indiscretion of the lecture TA. Igo's lectures are short recaps, so do not depend on them for the exams. Exams were written by a different professor. The TAs are amazing overall, professors not really
Igo is a terrible lecturer, she is very confusing. I did most of my learning for this class on my own and in the discussion sections. There were three long readings every week that you have to annotate for credit which was just monotonous. Exams were unnecessarily hard and the fourth midterm was taken on the same day as the final. Avoid her!
Learned most of the content from this class from NB readings. A ton of reading especially on the last week where she crammed everything. Majority of lectures in the first half of class were useless and just repeats of the readings. Last half of lectures were ok but sometimes she sounds incoherent. Took forever to release grades for mcq final.
Learning is done from Nota Bene and the internet. Lectures are impossible to follow and relate minimally to exams. I spent hundreds of hours doing extra work to get low Cs on the exams. The most poorly organized class I have taken at Davis. Little communication with students and no understanding or flexibility given circumstances.
I have to say I understand now why this class got switched to the last part of the BIS series. It covers some difficult material and while the tests didn't go too in-depth into it they were super tricky, making it easy to lose points if you don't read every questions closely. The massive amount of readings for this class was also kind of annoying.
Either I have totally no talent in Biology, or she does not know how to teach with clear logic and explanation...
I found professor Igo's lectures to be really unhelpful. Long note bene readings and discussions were the only places where useful information was taught. Grade heavily based on 4 midterms and final, the fourth midterm taken at the same time as the final. One good thing is that the lowest midterm score is dropped.
Bad lecturer, don't take her. I got an A mostly based on my own studying outside course, reading other textbook besides the one written by Dr. Faciotti. The textbook (NB reading) provided is terrible and low info density just like her lecture. Unless you are very good at self-teaching, don't take her, though the test is not super hard as other say.
Tests contain 5th grade grammar with doctorate level vocabulary that confuse you when you understand the concepts. Grade is very dependent on the tests.
90% of the lectures were useless info. Honestly could learn the material on ur own. Use prac exam questions and learning goals, even tho her prac qs may have a couple of wrong answer keys. Her exams were fair, but 2 wrong qs is already -12 pts so be perfect or get a couple wrong and get all the extra credit qs right. Good luck u WILL need it.
She was very bad with her students and would always say the wrong things in lecture
Igo's lectures didn't match up with the readings. She assigns hours worth of readings that are so dense and she doesn't explain it to the students very well. You have 3 midterms that are graded heavily and a final. One is dropped but even with that it's hard to get your grade up if you do miss/fail one. Not very good with communicating. AVOID!
The WORST professor I have taken here so far. Unaccommodating, useless lectures, long readings, hard midterms, so much extra busy work. She gave a midterm and final on the same day. Don't take her!!!
Horrible professor. avoid at all costs. bad lectures that didn't make sense logically, didn't line up with her readings she assigned. long readings and didn't explain readings well. introduced terms that made certain topics even more confusing and 100% useless. cannot teach for her life.
bad, bad, BAD!!! she can't teach, she yaps during lectures, and doesn't explain concepts well. doesn't tell you what's on the midterm until a week before and drops concepts that she has never taught before. should not be teaching and should be in a retirement home.
This is professor is by far the worse professor I have at UC Davis. She expects you to learn everything from long textbook readings that are very dense. She doesn't teach anything in lecture and instead talks about useless information 80 percent of the time. She is behind in curriculum yet expects us to know. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
Genuinely the worst professor at Davis. I'm shocked this woman is the associate dean. She doesn't lecture and expects you to learn only by reading an online forum that she developed which has many issues. Busy work assignments help your grade but she talks about herself and how she plans on doing rather than teaching any of the tested material. Run
Literally the worst professor ever. Also wanted to give this her 100th 1/5 rating :D She's just bad overall, not a good communicator, doesn't write her own midterms, copies off of other peoples slides and rebrands it as her own, doesn't even cover what she puts on her slides, and glosses over the important information. good luck if you get her.
If I could give a zero I would. Readings are so long and confusing. My finger turned purple from writing.. Save yourself. Lectures are useless.
The most helpful resources were the NB readings and your discussion TA, who essentially summarizes and fills in gaps in your knowledge. The while the content is not difficult, it helps to search up animations/diagrams! Just put in effort + use your resources. I wouldn't bother too much with lectures, but they're a good primer for course content.
Dr. Igo's lectures were very dull and I struggled to gain anything from them. It was much better to rely on discussions led by TA's, who were all excellent, attend TA workshops and exam prep, and read the Nota Bene readings, which were long and tedious, but still somehow more clear than the lectures.
Attending Instructor Igo's lectures felt like an optional time for me to attend as she mainly liked to reiterate topics frequently without trying to introduce new topics as needed. I would have preferred for her to have covered the new topics more in-depth rather than try to make connections from long ago to today's lecture.
Professor Igo is by far the worst professor I have had so far. It felt like she was reading the material for the first time, and was consistently late to class. In addition to not knowing the material, all she did was read off the slides, without adding any additional information. When students would ask her questions she would shut them down.
unreasonably long pre-lecture readings where half the time the actual lecture just barely correlates with the topics covered in reading. generally very disorganized and it's unclear what the students are expected to know
Lectures were not useful at all. Would make mistakes in her slides and not understand her mistakes. Would not properly respond to student's questions. Her lectures would not cover all of the content in the slides and made students self-teach rest. Content taught was not at the required level of detail for the test. Readings were disorganized.
If she is your only option for bis 2a, don't take it with her. She is definitely knowledgable about the subject but often seems annoyed when you ask questions. Readings include way too much information and often don't match up with lecture/discussion.
Igo's lectures are very undetailed and do not help in preparation for exams. She doesn't really answer student's questions and often ends up getting sidetracked on an unrelated tangent during lecture. If you pay attention to what your TA says during discussion and read the NB readings thoroughly, you should be ok.
Psychotic teacher do not take because she does not teach whatsoever. Her final is hard as sh
Her lectures are really slow, rambling, disorganized, and hard to learn from. She'd spend so long talking about unimportant topics (the scientific method!) and then wouldn't have time to cover foundational stuff (proteins, photosynthesis, etc.). Does not teach you half the stuff you need to know for this class. Kind but not an effective teacher.
She should not be a college professor. Just terrible. She never displayed even the slightest degree of competency in the subject.
Definitely not the worst professor I've ever had, but she is so BORING. What i always love to see in my professors is a passion for what they do. Someone who enjoys teaching their subject to others, and she definitely was lacking in passion. Her lectures were very boring and filled with useless information. Would not take again
2 midterms. long NB readings before every lecture. not the best explainer/lecturer. goes through her slides really fast. slides don't have much info. not the best at answering questions. exams weren't impossible, but definitely tests your knowledge and they are harder than namekawa's. lecture not mandatory. wasn't a mean person at least.
She taught us more about how to talk to our neighbours instead of her bis2a content. You learn all her content through long and wordy NBs filled with extra information. Didn't go through most things we need to know in her "lectures." Went to lecture reviews for her portion. Test questions weren't bad for the most part so that's her only positive.
Was decent at teaching, and the samples were fairly representative on what she would test us on. Overall a pretty average experience.
For someone who talks a lot about the design challenge... her lectures weren't very organized. Readings were long and time-consuming. Most students would only comment in the first paragraph and show no engagement with the rest of the material past commenting requirements. Attend lecture reviews and discussion, they will be way more helpful!
Igo was not the best lecturer, she wouldn't really teach or explain content, she just talked about the design challenge which was not useful. Her exam questions are a bit challenging, but they are doable if you do the practice TA exams. Overall, if this class is taught by her and another good professor, you will be fine if you study a lot.
Prof Igo is a very smart woman and I feel like she'd be a much better prof teaching upper div / grad classes. It was hard to understand her bc of the advanced words/examples she used. Her lectures were slow and she rarely finished all her slides. The nota bene readings she assigns were too long for a two day assignment. TA review sessions saved me.
Lectures were useless. Long and pointless readings filled with information that was never relevant to the course. Impossible to guess what would be on the test and what wouldn't. Learned better when I didn't attend lecture and just watched the recording since she would spend the entire lecture talking about essentially nothing.
Readings were super long and irrelevant, yet lectures had no depth and revisited the most basic concepts (I dreaded attending). Test questions were reasonable. In our class she primarily organized some readings and lectures, not grading of assignments.
I feel as though this class needs to be completely reorganized and rewritten. Lectures were very unclear and talked about everything except the important main ideas we actually needed to know. Test questions were beyond the scope of the class and turned simple topics into confusing questions. Other ways to get points up with discussion and stuff.
Oh no! What everyone else said. She is very knowledgeable, but would explain things in the most confusing way possible. Also had wrong information on slides, but refused to accept that she was wrong.
You're better off learning quantum physics from a goldfish. worst prof I've ever had by far. You learn nothing and her exams are hard. For lec, she'd legit just stick pics on her slides and stare at them like its the 1st time shes seeing them, then give the most useless explanation and tell you you can learn the remaining 50 slides on your own. BAD
She was okay, but kind of disorganized. The readings that we had to do for her part of the class went over way more things than we did in class and that were not on the final, so it felt unnecessary and made it more difficult to know what we actually needed to learn. Spent a lot of time on basic things at the beginning so harder things were rushed.
Her lecs were incredibly unorganized and she didn't add any important information to them, instead she skipped over half of the slides saying we "already knew that" even though it was not a prereq. Her readings are absurdly long and often times not even on the exams. Her exam questions are difficult and go past purely understanding the material
Do not recommend taking BIS2A with her, but if you do she only teaches the 1st midterms material, so not that bad. Her lectures were hard to follow and I could not understand what information I needed to know. Got a D on the 1stexam but ended w A bc of Namekawa. I think the best way of succeeding is self studying using outside resources.
It was like she was a random person who'd faked getting a bio PhD and was just up there improvising.
Professor looks at every slide like she has never seen it before. Lectures both very slow and uninformative. Professor doesn't know answers to discussion worksheet that she and the department have been using for years. Terrible at answering questions: tells us to look up explanations on internet. Gives very few study resources. Vague test questions
