I really thought that her class was very hard. She also made us read two novels quickly, which is hard when you have OTHER CLASSES! Strict attendance & the only teacher that actually gave us a midterm & final ... almost impossible to study for.
She gave us way to much reading to do, and made her quizzes very tricky. Attendence is a must, and she takes it every day. I asked her for help, and wasn't helpful at all. She must think we shouldn''t have a life...I am an A&B student, and I was failing when I dropped it. I wouldn't recomend her!
I was always such a big fan of history classes, but the reading she assigns is extremely long and time wasting. I would recommend that you try to get another professor for history besides her.
I thought that her quizzes were really hard but she offsets them by making her exams REALLY easy! As the class went on I got more and more interested in what she was teaching. If you are taking this class I would recommend participating and going to class because she grades you on both.
If you like history then you will like her class. Her class can be hard, especially her quizes, but her exams are a lot better. I learned a lot and enjoyed the clas.
She takes attendance every day and grades on participation in class & groups. Her quizzes directly reflect the reading assigned for THAT day- usually very hard! However, I thought her exams were down to the point and fairly easy- takes awhile to study for! I am currently getting an A...
Great professor. She is probably the best professor I have had since coming to Oshkosh. You can tell she knows her stuff and is passionate about it. If you like history, you'll like her
Don't talk in her class! At ALL! Once you get on her bad side, you stay on her bad side. She told the class to discuss the questions on the board while she took attendence (yes, attendence!) so me and my friends were doing that. What does she do? Yell at us for talking, and eventually kicks me out of her classroom. Thanks Kuhl, Learned a lot.
i enjoyed her class very much but there is alot of reading to be done... i think it was a little ridiculous on the amount of reading we had to do ..other than that lectures are good and very through
She is a pretty good teacher, her quizes directly come from the reading, so if you read you will do fine. Her lectures are very good. A point of advice is READ and Participate, Let her get to know you you will be much better off!
She is one of the best professor that I have encountered on the campus. She is helpful and understand. She knows her stuff regarding American History. She is much better in upper level classes. If you took her in a lower level class, try her in an upper level before judging her.
Very well organized, a great lecturer. Her quizzes can be tough but if you do the reading you should be alright. I didn't participate very much, which I got marked down for. Very passionate about history. If you like to get out of class early, take another teacher - her lectures are perfectly timed out to end exactly at the last min. of class.
USHistory till 1877--Do NOT take the interum of this class. She DOES assign a week's worth of readings in ONE night. This is her first interum, and she is extremely unorganized. I'm sure she's okay during the regular semester, but interum is not good! I advise you to stay away from this interum unless you want absolutely no free time for yourself.
This class isn't that bad. Fitting a semester into three weeks may seem like a difficult task but she does it quite well. The readings are beneficial for your daily knowledge but you're not directly tested on it. She has followed the syllabus quite well, if something changed she would tell us. She is good at catering to the class and our ?'s.
Dr. Kuhl is one of the most well organized, passionate professors I have ever had.She goes above and beyond the textbooks to provide you with modern perspectives of US History. Her quizzes are tricky, but her exams are more than fair.If you attend class and do the readings, there is no way you cannot succeed. If you respect her, she will respect you.
She is awesome! Very well organized, very well taught course. She knows the material and makes it fun. If you can read English and can take notes you can easily get an "A" in her classes. Expectations and grading were very fair.
took interum, it was hard, weeks reading every night! but she is a very fair person, very well organized, knows what she is talking about and can even be funny. Good class, took some boaring topics and made a 3 hour lecture go by like an hour and a half!
She is tough but very helpful and makes class fun.
I had her for interim, and I always thought history was boring, but i gained new appreciaton for it. I like how she taught it.
ONe of my most favorite teachers! She is hard, but really fair. If you do the work, you will do well. Very accessible, if you go for help, she is more than willing to help. Makes class really fun! Take her if given the chance!
worst history teacher ever! She assigns sooo much reading, has hard quizes and takes attendence everyday. Who does that? She is one of those teachers that you wonder if they realize you are in other classes as well.
good overall teacher, makes you participate so you kinda have to pay attention even if you dont want to. overall a good teacher who makes everyone involved and is good at explaining material to the class. major hottie as well!
She does assign quite alot of reading and does attendance. She is very helpful explaining anything you do not understand. If you particpate in her class (you get graded for it) You will be more likely to understand and do well.
She expects a lot of reading out of you, but you definitely gain a better understanding of what she's saying, and will naturally do better. Participation is key. She makes you memorize important passages from US History. She's really smart and knows what she's teaching. Take her, if youre willing to work.
I didn't really like this professor.
Great Professor. Interesting lectures. Hard class, but if you read and participate it's not that bad. Gives Extra Credit.
I had this class for interim and they was way too much reading for three weeks. I would suggest not to take her for interim. Her grading scale is very difficult. She said she would give extra credit but never did.
Terrible teacher! Expects way too much reading from you! Never take this class for an interim!
Took 201 for interim. I used to think it was a bad choice; she fits a ton of reading and 3 exams into 3 weeks. Then again, if you just buckle down, do your reading and study, you'll do fine. Would be worse in my opinion if it was dragged out for 14 weeks. Make sure to read for class, she will call on you randomly!
She told me I have "tics" and I emailed her telling her how offened I was and she pretty much didn't even care! She sent me a deff. of what a tic is... I know what a tic is!!! And I don't have tics!!! She has a pit class and gives everyone the exact same exam so she's over paranoid! She needs to mix up the questions. I hate her!
I really enjoyed this class for interim. Yes, it is a lot of reading, but that's what interim is. 14 weeks into just 3. She made lecture very interesting and made history fun. She also gave out 3 free attendance quizzes in our class, so that's definitely a plus. Overall, good professor. Not a bad choice for interim if you are just willing to read.
Slacking on reading the text will definitely hurt you... However - I rarely read an entire chapter, and I got a B. If you're incompetent, you better read that book and take notes in every lecture. If you're bright, you have a bit of leeway. She is a really nice person, I thought.
Challenging but still interesting, be sure to show up to class!
I had Kuhl for an interim class and it was the most work I've ever done for 1 class.Do NOT take her for interim, she gives a ton of homework and readings and randomly will call on you during class.
Professor Kuhl is a very strict person when it comes to the rules she sets. Very little leeway on attendance or late work. However, if you read the chapters and show up to class she can be very helpful and even fun. She randomly calls on students for answers so be sure to have at least some knowledge of what happened in the chapter. Fair teacher.
As long as you read your assigned material and participate in discussions you'll be fine. Test are a little rough, 50% of the tests are one essay question of your choice of two. Always willing to help and answers your e-mails promptly.
must attend class. if you don't your participate grade (20% of grade) will be low. Must read before EVERY class. very time consuming & hard. I'd reccomend taking a different teacher.
I loved Dr. Kuhl. She is strict as far as making you read the text and being prepared for class. However, if you are prepared she is awesome! She can be super funny too! There is never any guessing with her. You know exactly what is going on and what is expected of you. Also, attend class and participate(20% of grade. Awesome teacher!
She expects alot but if you do the work and reading you will do well. She is very nice and always willing to talk to you about questions. You should get to know her well as that will benefit you
Dr. Kuhl is a great teacher. You can tell that she is actually interested in what she is teaching which you don't always find. She does expect a lot, but if you do the reading and assignments and if you pay attention, you should be fine. Make sure you study for each of her exams. It is not a class that you can just show up for and get an A. You nee
Reading wasn't too much for me. I found test to be easy as long as you paid attention in class and participated and if you missed the reading it was all discussed in class. Everything on the test was discussed in class. If you like history and can pay attention then this will be a fun and easy class.
LOTS OF READING!! Best to read the chapters/articles b4 coming to class. She will randomly call on people so you better know your stuff. There a some days where other students really participate and Dr. Kuhl wont need to call on someone. But thats usually toward the mid of the semester. Hint: Read Read Read! Good Luck :)!
There is a lot of reading for this class but they really do help to prepare you for the exams. She is a very good professor who wants to see you succeed. The tests and quizzes are super easy if you come to class and do some of the reading. Just don't text or talk during class or she'll get angry.
She's a fun professor. Quizzes aren't that hard and tests are decent (half multiple choice half essay). Pay attention in class since she'll randomly call on students. A lot of reading is recommended though
LOTS of reading! She was very annoying and full of herself. A lot of class discussion so if you don't read you better hope she doesn't call on you. Very easy grader however.
Professor Kuhl was the best professor I've ever had. Attendance was mandatory but her lectures were all so interesting I wanted to go. There is a lot of reading but the textbook is pretty interesting. Definitely would take her again. I highly recommend professor Kuhl!
I really liked her teaching style and she was funny.
Very smart professor, she makes history lecture easy. Though her classes are very challenging, so if you are not an analytical person do not expect getting an A. Overall a great professor but would recommend her if your looking to boost your GPA
She is very passionate and knowledgeable about what she is teaching and it shows. Her class isn't the easiest and requires a lot of reading and going to class and listening to do well. She makes history interesting though and is pretty down to earth.
She was really good at delivering all the information we needed within the semester. She is also really funny in a quarky kind of way. She is difficult if you don't do your reading or don't show up. All you really need to do to pass the class is do your reading, show up and listen. The tests, quizzes, and writings are really not difficult.
A LOT of reading. However, I rarely read, and did just fine. Really pay attention in class, and at least skim the material. She grades fairly easily on written assignments. If you go to class and pay attention, you will be fine!!
If you are not willing to read and come to class, she is not the professor for you. If you are interested though, she allows you to rewrite papers and she is really funny. It's all about getting to know her and being able to ask for help. This was my first class with her and now she is my History Adviser. It's hard work, but makes you better.
I didn't really like Professor Kuhl's class. It was boring and a lot of information that was not clear.
YOU MUST READ AND ATTEND CLASS TO DO WELL. I mean a lot of reading for the history of pirates. She's nice but doesn't really show that she cares about her students but she does. But if you don't want to read don't take her.
Kuhl is a very interesting person. she has a degree in minority studies but teaches a class about pirates. yeah it sucks. she's not a very nice teacher she grades harshly! DO NOT TAKE HISTORY OF PIRATES!
The tests are hard but there's a silver lining. Work on your writing assignment early since you can get an easy A. It's a huge chunk of your grade
She is a very passionate professor who clearly knows the material! She expects her students to do the readings and think critically about them. She often looks at a variety of theories and encourages you to come to your own conclusion. Best teacher I ever had! Chose to get a History minor after taking this class!!
She knows so much about history. One of the best professors by far.
Reading and attendance are mandatory for this class or you will not pass. She knows the material well and is very passionate about history.
Great professor and easy to talk to. When you need help with assignments from class, she'll defiantly help you especially during her office hours. I would take the class all over just to have her as a professor again! D
she'll call peoples names from notecards and count participation, so be there!
If you have the chance to take professor Kuhl I would do it. She really cares about the success of her students and will go out of her way to help. She is a great teacher all around. I WOULD NOT take history 201 over interim. Too much reading and 6 hours of homework everynight. Other than that she is super nice friendly and great at her job.
The majority of year was reading two books and having tests on each. The class was pretty interesting (pirate history) so reading the books wasn't that difficult. She's a good teacher and tries to make the class as interesting as possible.
Knowledgeable and clearly loves history, BUT she doesn't have her class together! Disorganized, skips lectures, and wastes classes with open lectures!
I took her History 201 interim. It was very difficult, and there was over a 50% drop rate. But, it was well worth it. The three hour lectures went by quickly, and my grade went up by a whole letter with participation. Her purpose of making the class difficult is because she wants a degree from Oshkosh to mean more. She will help if you need her.
She is so passionate about African American Studies and wants to inspire that in her students, so if you're not receptive in that way you might not enjoy the class that much. LOTS OF READING, but nothing too hard except it take a while to finish Malcolm X. Participate a little everyday and she'll love you. Generous grader
There is a lot of required reading for the class. Apart from that the class is fine. The professor is very understanding and very knowledgeable about the subject matter. She also teaches a class on pirates so you can get her to go off on tangents easily if you mention pirates.
She is a very knowledgable professor that does a great job of explaining things clearly. The workload was very intense (Hist 201) during interim as she expects you to read 5-6 hours of material per night. The questions require thought provoking answers as well. Would not recommend taking an interim class from her.
Kuhl is truly everything I was looking for in a college professor. I took her history course for winter interim and while it was challenging due to the condensed content, she made it interesting and captivating. Her lectures are structured and organized and the textbooks correlate with what she talks about in meetings. Three exams worth 30% each!
I took this during interim so it was alot of reading. Only 3 tests
Very good at preparing you for her test. but she gives lots of home work in the form of reading sometime 100+ pages and typed questions to go along with them, she doesn't use canvas for grades, and isn't to good at getting papers back with feed back.
There is a lot of reading, but the reading helped me with the midterm/ final essay part of exams. Also she makes you do a lot of group work in a big lecture which I didn't care for at all. but overall she is a good professor and is pretty nice. had to take her for a gen ed history would recommend
Kuhl makes history interesting and fun to learn about! There are quite a few readings, but they are meaningful and help you understand the content better. I can honestly say that she is one of my favorite professors here at UWO
This class was really awesome. I genuinely enjoyed coming to class even though I usually don't have any interest in history. There are a lot of readings, but if you do them the midterm and final exams are pretty managable. Prof. Kuhl is an amazing professor overall.
Professor Kuhl was an amazing professor. She knew her stuff thats for sure. Her lectures were interesting and felt like she was telling stories the whole time. You need to read though. I took her US History until 1877 course, and reading is important, even though most of us gave up by midterms. Reading material is needed for exams. Great professor
Very insightful and interesting in class discussions. However, as soon as classes went online, she dropped off the face of the earth; little to no communication, no extra insights or feedback, no assignments. Online you only get out of the class what you read in the books, which you could do without a class. Has graded almost no assignments.
Dr. Kuhl is a nice person but as soon as classes went online she disappeared and for most of the time could not be contacted by email. She does not respond to most emails and she hasn't graded most of the assignments. Most of the class is just reading a book and taking notes which you could do without actually having to take this class.
She doesn't give 100s, but offers no critical feedback on assignments or papers, so students don't know what they are doing wrong or how to improve for the next time. The only comments I have received have been positive, but leaves me wondering why I get the grades I do if she doesn't have negative things to say about the work. Very frustrating!!
Prof. Kuhl is very understanding especially if you reach out in advance. Be ready to read!! You will read at least two chapters and have to answer questions about the chapters in great details. To receive an A on a chapter write up you need many examples and a lot of explanation.
The way the class was organized online made it difficult to know what was due and which lectures were for each week. Lots of reading and answering questions about it but not too difficult, need evidence and show understanding for full credit (same for exams). Lectures can be confusing and doesn't always relate to the readings.
Hours of homework followed by assignment drop boxes being created at the last minute. Be prepared to get called on randomly and you better have direct quotes to back up anything you say. Easily the most stressful course I've ever taken.
DO NOT TAKE!!!! Slowest grader, terrible professor. Super mean, by the time of the midterm, only 2 assignments had been graded and we have multiple due a week. Assignments don't help and are lengthy. It's all reading and answering questions. Took forever to grade. Note slideshows don't have words so can only write what she says and talks fast.
She makes you read a lot of books, and grades extremely hard. Most of the articles read in class did not make sense, like they were written in the 1800s and the questions that go along with the assignments are very specific and hard to understand. If you can avoid taking a class with her, I would highly recommend it.
If you are thinking about taking her class, DON'T She is truly the worst professor I have ever had. Terribly slow grader and so many assignments. She never responds to emails and her lectures are extremely hard to follow. Her exams have questions that were not discussed in class. She is VERY rude
She knows her stuff and gives interesting lectures. However, her expectations for homework are unbelievable. She expects you to read a chapter in the textbook (only about 15 pages) and answer questions usually twice a week. In order to get an A on HOMEWORK, I would write four pages double spaced and still not get full credit and no feedback.
DO NOT TAKE - even if you like history this class takes a lot out of you. The reading is INSANE - mostly hard to understand and long!! Not to mention the questions we had to submit twice a week every week all semester. they took me about 4-5 hours each assignment to get an get an A on them
This professor has some elements to her class that are interesting, as the in-class discussions can be interesting. However, she is a slow grader and is very disorganized despite preaching "organization". She plays videos without watching them and has a lackadaisical attitude during class. Interesting class, bad professor.
Dr. Kuhl's Guilded & Progressive Age class is pretty enjoyable. It requires a moderate amount of reading and bi-weekly homework. The home work requires a lot of critical thinking, so don't wait until the last minute. The lectures are really good. The exam timekeeping is pretty nerve wracking. You get 30 min updates. Just a heads up.
Professor Kuhl surprised me. Though it is quite a lot of work, she is a fair grader and if you do the homework plus a little studying for the two exams, she easily gives you an A. The Black Power lecture was very interesting and she is actually a nice person! Also, points for participation so contribute to the class discussions.
Theres a lot to like about this professor. She gives great feedback, theres usually only about one assignment a week, and her class is very conversational. While there are some lectures, there is also lots of opportunity to talk with groups or as a class discussion (participation here matters). She can be a tough grader, but appreciates hard work.
Took this class for my XS course to fill credits. Would not recommend and I had no time for other homework. There are multiple reasons due every week. Readings consist of 6 different articles with questions on each one. They are difficult to understand and take hours to do
Professor Kuhl was amazing and I'm genuinely grateful I took her class. She was really caring and understanding, and always made lectures interesting. She has a fun sense of humor as well. I heavily recommend taking any of her classes!
Professor Kohl has a bunch of assignments for History 201. Please be prepared to read everyday. It may get boring to read for her class, but just keep going. Her assignments are going to keep your grades steady. And I suggest you to try to participate when it comes to class discussions because it could be interesting.
I loved her lectures every week and found them very entertaining! Towards the beginning of the semester, she was assigning readings due every week with questions attached which were quite time consuming, but she lessened the workload significantly by the end of the year. She is super great and knows her stuff, would recommend!
If you have any learning disabilities don't take the class this professor is not inclusive to people who need accommodations. This professor is rude to people who need accommodations as well " How did you make it to college?" I have also had issues with tests in this class the professor won't want to give you any accommodations.
You will have no time for any other class, she assigns weekly reading assignments that include 6 different articles all of which include questions that take hours to complete. You will have no time to get homework done in your major-dedicated classes because this Gen Ed Professor feels the need to swamp you in work.
Too much homework, she had inappropriate answers on the mid-term, and overall it was an awful class. Avoid her and her class if possible. Not a good teacher or a good person, any good ratings are probably because that person talked extra in class.
Avoid taking this professor. Too much work, the class is boring, she is rude, doesn't answer emails in a timely manner, etc.
Dr. Kuhl is an amazing professor her history 201 course is lecture heavy but I found her lectures to be quite entertaining. She does a great job making connections with her students and accommodating to their needs. Her course is heavy on readings would be difficult to be completed successfully without reading the books assigned to the course.
All I have to say is good luck. You get 2 lengthy assignments a week which includes about 40 pages of reading and 25 questions. She also doesn't grade assignments until more than a month after you turned it in. You also have to go listen to the posted lectures after class since she talks to fast you can't understand any of it.
LOTS OF HOMEWORK, but worth it. Her lectures are the most entertaining things ever. While the homework was a lot I genuinely took a lot away from this class and would take it again.
She is very homework heavy, Which includes readings twice a week that take hours to do. I would spend at least three hours per homework just to get a B on it. Her lectures you had to take notes from her talking and she talks fast and you don't know what's important to write .I will say she is understanding if you do go to her office to talk to her.
I've had Professor Kuhl twice now and, yes, her class can be heavy with assignments but at the end of the day you are in college... Her classes are very insightful! As long as you do your assignments, exams are a breeze!
Expect a heavy workload with this professor. The readings and assignments are extensive, but engaging class discussions make it worthwhile. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for efficiently preparing for exams.
Has incredible information to relay and always willing to discuss anything outside of class during office hours and other times!
