Way too much writing. Fairly straightforward exams. Gives opportunity 2 do well.
Excellent Prof..she knows her stuff
NEVER NEVER NEVER take Psych 2810
If she knew how to teach the class may have been better.
She seems to know what she's talking about but her lectures are very boring and she doesn't give notes.
She makes class interesting. Her tests are fairly simple, if you study!
Doesn't give notes? Sure you just have to listen to what she says and pick out the important stuff...it's on the test trust me. Maybe you should go to class more.
Very nice but she doesn't give notes
I loved this course. I found her notes better than from 2011, I just listened and took stuff down. If you go to class and pay attention, it's an easy A. She's a good prof, I liked her.
Outlines must be wrote up on the way to class while driving. She knows what she's talking about but good luck trying to understand it. I never missed a class and did crap. Class average for the two mid terms were 49 and 45. she's a **** tho if that counts
the best prof i've ever had for dictating notes from. she goes slow enough to get everything down word for word without writing anything on the board. study HARD and go to every class: it's the only way to get an A
Undoubtedly intelligent but seems to have difficulty teaching; another prof who simply can't TEACH! She is however really approachable. Oh, she's 60 and dresses like she's 20.
very boring. She seems to have her head in the clouds because as she lectures she often loses her spot and makes me wonder if she wants to be ther anymore then we do. Her voice always sounds like she is nervous but she seems to know her s**t!!!
Nice woman, good class, a little scatterbrained. I think for a mother of a young child, she should probably dress her own age.
I FOUND THE EXAMS VERY HARD. I ENDED UP FAILING, AND I STUDIED REALLY HARD AND WENT TO EVERY CLASS.

Professional attire would go a long way. It's hard to have respect to someone who dresses like that at the University level of teaching.
Seriously, she should learn to dress more professionally. Her class was not interesting, and her notes....don't get me started. If I am to pass this course, its going to be great. I wouldn't recommend this course to anyone, let alone recommend her as a prof to anyone.
She's a really nice person, and she knows her topic inside out. There's no fronting about her, and she's very scientifically oriented; especially good with the chapters delaing with vison and brain development. And also, I don't think how she dresses is related at all to her teaching ability.
Hard to know what to say about this one. I find she goes slow enough to take good notes from but it rarely helps you on tests. I think she picks the more insignificant stuff to test you on. Her test are not predictable at all. She is a nice woman though...but she should dress her age.
Where do I begin...thank god the course is finally over is all I have to say. Not something I would put anyone through.
She will give you a second chance if you do not do too good on your first test. It sucks when she got to have assistance though, but I guess with about 300 ppl in the class, she can't do it all on her own, then again she didnt do anything but teach.........
scattered, gives poor notes, and poor lectures, doent know how to use the overhead, very hard to see. Tests are quite reasonable.. but dont put too much study into the book (she doesnt test much on it). classes are Boring. Not a bad course though, i did ok
Love her...good notes...very helpful...she talks way too fast tho...interesting...had her for 2010 too...good course ..enjoyed it...Hint: Study your notes...tests come almost directly from them...book not that important
I thought she was a very good prof. she knew her stuff and knew how to teach it. she gave very good hints for the exams and if you study you'll do really well, trust me. She makes the course interesting, I would highly recommend her.
IF YOU WANT TO GET MORE MUSCLES IN YOUR HANDS.. DO PSYCH2010 with michelle... she loves to see you writing everything that she says.......
Loved her...great notes...interesting...study her notes...dont focus on text book....her tests come almost completely directly from the notes.
Final exams are very hard, and there is so much to learn!
She is an amazing teacher, knows what she's talking about and presents it good to the class.Very friendly lady and dont mind helping her studendts after class. And for how she dresses, who cares as long as she's still a good teacher
I decided to wait to rate Michelle so I could experience a few more Psyc profs 1st. My suspicions have been confirmed. She is a lousy teacher compared to others here. She does cover everything in class (don't buy the book) but she doesn't give you enough time to write it all. Some exam q's are on info barely covered. AVOID!!!!!Try Mckim,or Fowler!!
This class was pretty easy, as long as you study at least a little bit. She had great notes, and the tests were mostly focused on the notes. I would recommend this course!
Great prof, good notes! Study hard and you will do fine!
I liked her. Make sure you know how to take good notes! Tests were a combination of m/c, short answers & fill-ins, which aren't too bad if you study her notes - and her notes are good, btw! I thought she was also nice when it came to asking her questions one-on-one as well. would recommend!
She was an awesome prof. She's a neuroscientist, and if you're smart and interested in the field, she was be very helpful. I also think she's a fair marker and test maker. University's not going to be easy, and she's definitly not going to "sugar coat" it, but if you work hard, it will difinitly pay off. She teaches you many extra things that help.
Best prof I have ever had at MUN!!!! She leaves out all the crap and just tells you the important stuff. Also a majority of the exam comes from the notes except for an occasional MC. I don't know who else teaches this course, but I can't imagine anyone being better.
worst prof i ever had
I like her teaching style. She makes it easy to understand and remember information. She seemed a bit conceeded but other then that she was nice.
worst proff i've ever had
A very good prof. I had her evening slot so it was difficult to pay attention for so long, but she understood that and gave us a break half-way and often let us go early. She tells you only the important things, makes it easy to understand and remember concepts and ideas. I’ll specifically look for her class again when I take the next psych course.
She was really dull. Made me think twice about taking another pysc course. But unfortunally I have to, but I will avoid her if I can. You should too.
Amazing Prof. anyone who says that she doesn't give notes must be brain dead, everything she says you have to write down. Tests aren't too difficult if you study the notes she gives you, doesn't focus too much on the text. Since when do you have to dress like a spinster when you have a kid? She's like 35 and in amazing shape. Giver her break.
She is a good instructor. Sometimes would get off topic or 'waste' time but otherwise a good teacher. Sometimes she was not the greatest at managing time but otherwise good. Good at attracting interest in topics taught.
Overall, the class reflected my expectations. There was a lot of reading, but there was only two tests and an exam. For the most part, attendance to the lectures is very important. The tests usually revolve around information given in class.
def the worst prof i had this semester, i am a first year student and i can understand now why people give up on university. WOuld not reccomend to anyone.
Boring teacher, she doesn't allow ample time to take notes and refuses to put them online for you to use. Not the worst teacher I've had but she's working hard for the position. She's nice, personally however a horrible teacher.
THIS WOMAN SHOULD NEVER TEACH AGAIN! Seriously, please say away if you can, she is definately way too boring.
Great professor! Really knows her stuff.
Good prof. Interesting lectures despite the fact that she had to look into a camera.
Great prof. Really knows her stuff
I think some people are being a bit unfair. I thought she was a very good prof. She seemed a bit uncomfortable with the video setup, but goodness knows I would be as well. Maybe the TV approach just isn't her thing? Her lectures were well-structured and her exam questions were reasonable - and those are the only two things that matter, really.
Dr. Mercer is a fair prof. SHe covers alot in her lectures and her tests follow her lectures. I recommend her
Sharing the stage with Dr Maddigan can be tough but I think she did a great job! She's a great prof and I'd definently take a course with her again.
She talks pretty slowly and has trouble at times, but isn't too bad. Perhaps with time she'll improve.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had and probably will always be the worst. no one likes her or her class and she doesn't give a**** about any of the students. Don't take a class from her. It will be hell.
she is a very nice person.. and tries hard to make her classes interesting.. she aslo lays eveything out for you and tell you what you need to know!.. she is great...IF you are not easyly bored!!
kind of annoying

She's pretty good. Somewhat boring but still a decent prof. Not the worst prof I have. If your like me and get bored easy then you should avoid having her as a prof. I guess she tries her best...
Umm..She was okay. Not the most interesting class, but she's a nice person and was willing to help her students.
She is not a very good teacher. You have no choice but to rely on the text book because she doesn't make any sense when she teaches.

Excellent prof. Puts alot of effort into her lectures and is really well organized
i think she is beyond ridiculous! I don't get anything out of her classes, the only thing to do is read from the textbooks to understand.
Great teacher. Great notes. Puts in a lot of effort.
Awesome teacher. Good for a 1001 course
I thought that she was well organized and explained things clearly. She used examples that the class could relate to. I don't know why some people are being so hard on her.
I don't know if it's the prof or the course, but I found her lectures to be very... "meh." You'll do fine if you read the text.
Not very good at showing up on time. Her notes are not very helpful, reading the text is way better. And her voice.. I know she can't help it, but it's irritating.
i really enjoyed her lectures. im now switching my major from hist to psyc b/c of my interest in the material. shes a great prof for this intro to psyc course and really sparked an insane interest in psychology for me. :)
Year is based on 3 tests, so textbook must be used a lot. She doesn't seem to help students that much, but I guess it's hard to do in a class of a couple hundred. Overall OK class and OK teacher.
Michelle Mercer was very boring, and didn't put any effort at all into trying to make the class interesting. She isn't very friendly or approachable, and doesn't seem to care about how well her students do. Avoid getting her if all possible !
I heard all these bad things about her,but since having her as a prof, she's nothing like what I heard! She's nice and she teaches well. Her tests are fair!
She's a pretty good prof. She knows a lot about the course material, and is always able to add a little more than just what her slides say. I would definitely appreciate if she would put her slides online. A lot of profs don't realize that some of us are auditiory learners, and can't write and learn at the same time.
I really enjoyed Dr. Mercer. Seriously. She was one of the better profs I've had. Sure, she's no Rick Maddigan, but then again-who is? I found her very easy to understand with both her lecturing and her notes. Just show up and I promise you have nothing to complain about. Easy peasy stuff guys. I'd definitely take her again.
VERY boring. Her speech is so disjointed that I'm convinced she smokes pot before class. She randomly stops during a sentence for several seconds before continuing, very strange and annoying. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HER IF AT ALL POSSIABLE!!! Try for someone like Maddigan if your doing 1000 level. If your doing 2010... good luck.
Avoid if at all possible. Lectures consist of reading directly out of the text.(with large pauses in middle of sentences)She also never keeps track of time and tends to go over, then gets irratated with people who get up after class has ended already ten mintues late.
Okay okay, definately not Rick (Rick was awesome!) But Dr. Mercer was pretty good! Though it appeared sometimes the class would never end, she sparked something in me that kept me with Psych, and then to go on to do 01 with Rick helped me choose my psych minor. Awesome course, it's worth to endure 1000 for 1001. :)

Threatened to call security because some people were talking and interrupting here already useless lecture. Got nothing out of it, and came close to suicide while in her lecture. 10/10
Lectures are more boring than any other course I'm doing. Not approachable at all, and seems to say at least one agitated and angsty comment per lecture about how bad we are. As said below, she did in fact threaten to have the entire class removed by security for disrupting what was a completely useless lecture.
she is okay. i found it annoying when she constantly made sexual references and metaphors to things relating in the course and i thought she dressed really inappropriately as a prof. she know what she is talking about and gives good notes but she isn't too eager to help you and seems annoyed and always busy if you see her about a question.
She is the worst teacher!!! Aviod her if you can..she's not approachable, rude, and her classes are soooooo boring. She is way to fast in teacher psy 1000. It is not fun at all!!!!
I find people are too hard on her. Yes, she's a little boring but she's not inappropriate in anyway. If you don't like the prof, fortunately it's mainly all from the book or online slide shows so you'll be fine anyway.
Classes were boring and tests were hard. Wouldn't recommend her.
Classes are a little boring since she reads off slides for the most part, but she does show some good videos. She posts her slides online which is very helpful and is good when you need to miss a class. It's not an easy course with her, but if you study hard and study notes and the book, you will do fine in the course.
Class is so boring. Goes through the slides way too fast to even understand and the slides are really pointless for studying, better off reading the text than anything else.
I reallyliked Mercer. Notes were really good, but the lectures were also excellent. I'd definitely recommend her, but remember: Psych is a study-heavy course! You're definitely going to need to study a lot for quizzes and exams, but you should probably expect that on the way in.
Michelle Mercer was HORRIBLE. Never clarified when asked to do so, and forced people to talk in a lecture class. When no one answered a question she would not tell us the answer and then put it as a 15pt question on the midterm. It was a table about twins and genetics. No one understood it but she wouldnt go over it in class
Absolutely dreadful! The best way to pass this course is study straight from the book. Her powerpoints are useless, the only thing that's good about them are the videos and the examples she may provide in them. The psych exam is all multiple choice and chances are 1/10 will be on what you studied in the power points.
You'll get more out of making offerings of burnt cash to appease your text book than you will out of this professor. If you're the sort who can't learn everything from a book, stay away.
She is abosolutely useless. The best way to spend time in her class is to take a nap....she is a sleeping pill...
She is a nice enough person, but has a very annoying voice. Kind of boring but seems like she tries her best to make class interesting with videos and stuff. I wouldn't say avoid her but I would say try to get in her class either..
she is as good as a psych prof can be, its not that she is boring, learning psych in a classroom is boring, but thats not her fault. Her notes are a bit different, so to understand them you should be in the classroom cause she uses them as jotnotes to what she is saying. But for any psych class the best thing to do is study the book.
Good teacher, can be quite humorious. Can be boring at times, but its pysch intro. Study the book and pay attention in class for good marks
A lil rude
NO idea why people said she was rude OR boring, she is neither of those things. She's funny & a bit acerbic (in a good way) I loved her class & it was mostly because of Michele that I loved it. She's very clear on what's required & with all the cool videos & funny stories she told us I really have no idea how you were bored, try community college
Good prof.. but she makes a lot of sexually oriented jokes, which can be funny or just awkward. Slides for this course were not very helpful so read the book.
avoid at all costs...
Reading the text is a must. Not an overly hard/easy course, she did a good job of keeping the 75 min class entertaining.-- She was rude through email when I contacted her, but w/e she was a pretty good prof. All multiple choice testing(as you'd expect), would recommend.
It was teh text that was so, so difficult to read. Plus the teacher herself ws not exactly open to conversation.
I disagree with anyone that claims her to be a bad prof. LOVE HER AS A PROF, She's one of the nicest professors ever and she never hesitates to see you if you are having problems with the courses. She explain it over and over until you know it and loves it when people answer her questons in class. She is awesome for a prof. Study the book well.
Decent professor. She uses good analogies in class that make you remember things easier.
I actually find her quite humorous and interesting, Its not her fault that the lecture room is so hot that people fall asleep!
Entertaining prof, uses powerpoints and lectures as well as films and demonstrations. She makes things easy to understand and remember. If you come to class and pay attention, you're set
If you get Michele Mercer for your Psych course. RUN. She doesn't use portal, and only grades you on your 2 midterms + final. She's good at explaining but if you have a hard time studying and would rather assignments for extra marks do not choose her.
She was a half decent prof, she was very entertaining and I always had a fun time attending classes. She is a bit unorganized at times, but that's what made the class fun sometimes and not so serious. She doesn't use portal for assignments, she just has two midterms that make up 50% of your grade and the final. Overall I would take her class again.
She's not a bad prof, her lectures were interesting but I'd never take her again! She doesn't use psych portal nor do any quizzes or assignments. Grades based purely on exams which sucks for people who FAIL at multiple choice. Personally, find a prof that uses psych portal, it helps a lot more.
She knows what she's talking about, reading the text is a must in this course! She doesn't use portal which in my opinion is not a good thing and only had 2 tests plus a final, if you don't like reading don't do this course.
Prof. Mercer was teaching a weekly evening lecture and she wasted too much time cutting class an hour early which ended up screwing us over at the end of the semester. A decent grade is possible as long as the chapter readings are kept up. Not a stellar prof, but not terrible either.
Worst prof. in the world. Avoid her if you can, all my friends told me to avoid her and I regret not listening to them. Her teaching is as bad and as stupid as her tests.
I do not know where to begin. She's the worse prof EVER !!!! Her test are beyond stupid...I studied sooooo much for this course and still did bad on it...I'm an A student; I use the same technique when studying with all my courses and get As all the time....I read the chapters twice for this course and still did bad on it....SHE is EVIL !!!!
Had to photocopy ALL our sources for the term paper. Refused to help students with the paper/no time for students. Messy notes straight from the textbook. European words (passive smoking) still included. It took me a WEEK to decipher them. Left for a week, and chose to teach the minors class? Had her for intro, HAS NOT CHANGED IN 3 YEARS. AVOID!
very not helpful-left for vacation for a week before the 2nd midterm and wasn't there to help us during test.was disappointed the 1st test avg was 75("too hi").would not help with paper in the week before it was due.tests rely heavily on an old text book.long answer q's are very specific and difficult.looks down upon those who dont attend class
excellent prof - knows her stuff, funny and interesting
Great proff! Very clear and has fun stories
Terrible prof. She is unorganized and very rude to students. She will yap on and on about irrelevant things and completely go off topic. Not to mention she didn't even cover half of the stuff we needed to know for exams. Avoid this prof. If you are doing Psych 1000, just skip class. She only goes over notes ripped from the text.
A terrible professor. I have had her for two classes and hated her BOTH times. Avoid class, studey the text like crazy, and bacsically whatever is on her notes, won't be on the tests
she is a good prof and all but she seems to have many sexual references to things. read the textbook and you should do fine. when she tells you to read a module or two a day you really should.
Horrible prof. She tends to rant about things that are for the most part irrelevant, she flips back and forth in the slides, and doesn't allow enough time to write much. She is very disorganized and always seems a little doubtful of what she's saying. I would NOT recommend her.
AVOID this prof. There is something about this prof which is just annoying. She's very disorganized and the way she speaks is just not clear. This is my least favourite class just because of her and the content is boring since it's an into. to psych.
okay professor. little evaluation so must do good on each one, however does accommodate their value to give you a higher grade if you show improvement. very slow at putting notes online (sometimes morning before lecture)but overall an alright professor
This course is hard enough, but with a teacher who doesn't make it interesting it's even harder. This is a subject that you HAVE to study throughout the semester for. Don't think you can cram before exams because it wont work! Evaluation is ONLY 3 exams. I would prefer to have quizzes so I know where I stand. I do not recommend her for this course
Personally, I liked the course but hated the fact that Dr. Mercer spend the whole class reading from the slides that she had posted online. It was a waste of time to go to class when you could read the notes at home yourself.
Great Prof! Very helpful, wants you to succeed. She gave our class extra marks on a test and a bonus question on the next one to improve marks. Great lecturer, very clear. Only improvement would be a participation mark or maybe some weekly quizzes, 2 25% tests and a 50% final is a bit daunting.
The worst!
Don't put yourself through this.
Great prof! She makes the class very interesting and she is actually hilarious! I would recommend her for anyone!
Great prof! Makes lectures interesting and tries to get everyone involved! She wants you to pass her class so she is willing to help you if you are willing to do the work!
I don't understand why people don't like her! She's a good prof and what she expects of you is very clear. You have to do some reading on your own but that's to be expected with any heavy course. Pay attention to her examples and read your textbook and you shouldn't have a problem. Highly recommend her!
She's an ok prof, pretty much tells you what's in the textbook. It's hard to really be a good prof when there's 2 or 3 hundred students in the class. Going to class will help you understand and she puts the slides online so you can follow along and highlight parts which is good.
Great prof! Makes lectures interesting and tries to get everyone involved. Obviously a heavy work load but that's what you'd expect from this class. Definitely a lot of emphasis on the textbook. Slides are just a reiteration of it, but if you actually read the textbook you should do fine!
Good prof, heard lots of bad things about her but I don't believe them to be true. Notes were good, she explained things good. Class was hard to stay awake in but thats just Pysch, not her fault. Overall good prof, would take again over others. Exams pretty easy, definitely fair.
Lecture notes are very well put together and she presents everything the expects you to know. She can be slightly dry at times, doesn't respond well to questions. I haven't been to her office hours, so i'm not sure what she's like personally. Fair tests, no unexpected questions. All in all, I read the text, made notes and got a relatively easy A.
This prof is fantastic! I enjoyed her lectures, I was actually excited to go to this class. She made me decide that I wanted to major in psychology because she made it so fun and interesting. EVERYONE should take this course from her.
She is an awesome prof. Very approchable. She makes lectures interesting and is always willing to answer question. She shows videos that help better your understanding on specific topics. Totally recommend her!!:)
NIce person, but I nearly fell asleep in each class. It's interesting material and she gives good slideshows but it just seems like she drones on forever. Just know her slides and read the text and you'll do well.
Her slideshows are perfect for this course. They are exactly what you need to get an A in the course. As long as you show up to class, read the slideshows and the book you will do perfect! i warn you though if you can get a 50 minute slot with her instead of an hour and 15. you will pay attention more and retain more information.
Michelle Mercer is a decent proff , you have to work for your mark & this a course you cant cram for , read the textbook & slides(which is used as lecture notes & posted online) & you will do fine , however only 2 tests (25% each w/ 80MC) & a 50% final.
Her lectures where hit and miss, i mean she had moments of brillance and moments where she could put you to sleep. She says nothing important in class just read your modules and text book and you'll do fine. I wish i could take back every class i went to and saved myself the trouble and did it online.
Decent lecturer, horrible tester. Her tests were so hard and she was really mean about how dumb my whole class was. Avoid if possible
No attendance required. Study the slides and book and save yourself a hour of falling asleep.
Dr. Mercer is a very helpful person, and cares that her students do well. Go to class, take notes as hers are incomplete, and study the notes and the book if you want to do well.
Michele Mercer is a great prof. Her slideshows were good and her lectures were actually quite interesting if your into psychology. Her tests are fairly good if you take notes and read the textbook. Heard a lot of negative things about her which I found to be untrue.
I found her to be a great prof! Sometimes the lectures were a little underwhelming but thats just because some of the material is dry, its not her fault. If you have a prior interest you will do fine, attendance is not mandatory but i found her very helpful for understanding some confusing topics. Tests arent easy but study and youre fine.
She is the worst prof i have ever had. Avoid at all costs. She takes pride in her class average being a 60 and enjoys the fact over half of the class in failing
I have to agree with the review below mine, AVOID IF POSSIBLE. Classes are boring, and like the review below mine said, she ENJOYS having a low class average. Also, she doesn't really seem to care about the class seeing how she never finished the last 3 chapters, and THE ENTIRE COURSE WAS RUSHED.
Not helpful at all, didn't answer emails or questions, she seemed proud that her class average was so low, lectures were boring, and all she did was read from slides. Once in a while she had an interesting video though.
decent prof, but the lectures are pretty dry. tests are a lot harder than they need to be for a first year course.
decent prof, lectures are very dry. the tests are a lot harder than they need to be for a first year course.
Dr. Mercer gets her kicks from choosing exam material from the most obscure facts. She prides herself on failing 1/3 of her classes and is totally unreceptive to feedback. She frequently skips office hours and email feedback is vague and unhelpful.
Avoid this prof if possible. She completely over-complicates a decent topic and her tests are absolutely horrific. She phrases her questions in the most ridiculous way and then blames her class for being "stupid" when everyone fails the exams. On top of all of that, she is not helpful in emails and misses office hours frequently.
Avoid this prof if you can. Her notes are awful and she doesn't explain anything important in class. Her tests are hard and none of the material covered in class is important for them! stay away from taking psych with her.
Not a bad prof. As other reviews say, the material that she gives doesn't give any insight to what's on any of the evaluations. She knows her stuff but doesn't make it 100% clear to students.
Loved taking this course with Michelle! She pretty much told the class the long answer questions that were going to be on the midterm the class before!
The professor was not helpful and did not give any useful feedback throughout the course She did not make this course enjoyable to do I would not recommend this professor for this course
Michele is funny and interesting. She tries to get all of her students to understand material. Michele uses stories, videos, and lectures to help teach. Notes are posted online.
The type of professor you DO NOT want to have. Far too pretentious, which leads her to literally, and I'm not joking, take pride in a low average and strive for it. This professor is working against you. You MUST avoid.
Found prof provided poor communication, did not clarify questions when asked. Tests were hard and basically long answer questions were just pulled from notes with no emphasis on what was important. Just told to read, read, read, would not recommend for this course.
Received 6-word feedback on my assignment. An easy subject made difficult by convoluted questions and an emphasis on the professor's own casually-written, uncited, outdated notes. Received a good mark, but worked damn hard for it and didn't feel the professor actually did very much other than write unfair tests. I mean, what is a professor for?
Very pretentious and easily offended. Not the type of prof you feel able or even comfortable to go to for help as she gets angry if you ask anything as shes offended by the fact you have a question. Also not the type of prof who cares about seeing you do better. Bearable in lectures but not a pleasant person to deal with. Definitely avoid.
Michelle is by no means a bad prof, her lectures are usually interesting. She goes off the slides that she puts online so it is not necessary to go to class. I never had a bad experience with her and would take her again. She gave an extra 5% on the first midterm. Her tests are very fair, its not a hard course anyway, just read the book.
100% WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. Notes are horrible and all she does is read off the slides. She also seems offended whenever you ask her a question? Psychology is an interesting course but she makes it FAR from interesting.
Worst prof I've had. Would NOT recommend her for any course although I'm pretty sure she is the only prof for Psych 2010. HORRIBLE experience, the material she made us cover was ridiculous and literally set you up for failure. Just don't. Run. (Sucks because the course itself is interesting).
Excellent prof. Knows her stuff and is enthusiastic and funny. Encourages questions. She's tough but fair
Excellent professor. Made a boring topic interesting with her examples and videos. Knows her stuff
Dr. Mercer was a brilliant lecturer who cared a lot for her students. Her presentations were well laid out, clear and easy to follow. Her tests were fair and she gave us every opportunity to obtain excellent grades. I would take another class with her any day.
Not sure what all the negativity is about below, great prof, easy tests. Made it out of Psych 1000 with a 91%. Very easy.
I agree with the comments below in saying she was the worst prof I've had and I've been in university for 4 years! She does not care for her students and it's pretty obvious. She's disrespectful, rude and certainly not accommodating. Wouldn't recommend her to anyone and I won't be taking her again that is for sure!!
Took for introductory psych. Her lectures are good, and she covers the topics well, however the midterms and final are heavily based on the text so you still need to do a lot of reading. She loves getting the class involved with different participation exercises which really help with remembering some of the terms. And all her notes are online.
Average amount of work for a Psychology 1000 course. She isn't always clear when teaching the material in class but gives detailed notes. She can ramble off stories unimportant to the course. I would not totally discourage anyone from choosing her, I'd just warn them to be prepared to pay attention and take notes in class. She's an okay prof.
Very disrespectful. Her lectures are hard to follow. Avoid. You'll need the textbook. Her tests in no way correlate to what is taught in class
As a first year student in my first semester, taking this class was very difficult. She was helpful in lectures but there is just way too much information that was irrelevant when came time for the tests. Her tests are really difficult and she believes in reading all notes and textbook. Be prepared to study A LOT for her course.
Dr. Mercer made it very tough to truly understand some topics of Psych1000. She never went over anything twice and simply didn't care about her students (unless they were sleeping, of course)
Her lectures are incredibly interesting, but her tests are HORRIBLE! Worst psych prof to have, if you can get anyone else then do it. She expects you to read hundreds and hundreds of slides for her midterms which then ask very obscure facts that she didn't really go over clearly in class. Absolutely horrible, her tests are incredibly difficult.
Would recommended.
Very boring. Hard tests considering theres Midterm 1, Midterm 2, and the final. They're hard and so much memorizing. Lectures are very bland.
Avoid at all cost. Worst prof I've had so far
Dr. Mercer isn't horrible this course is based solely on exams 2 midterms 25% each and a final worth 50% if you don't test well don't take this course with her. She gives wonderful examples and puts all notes online you definitely need to go to class though because she explains things really well she gave everyone an extra 5% on the first midterm
She gives really good examples during her lectures. If you aren't prepared to read the textbook, along with attending class, do not pick her. She's very genuine.
Her tests are bad & she's not the best at lectures, she just reads right from the slides.
Her slideshows were so confusing and not helpful at all, I had to use the textbook to create all of my notes. Class isn't mandatory because she rarely talks about important concepts for the test. She seems like she could be a cool person, but she's not a good prof.
solid professor that's understanding and wants her students to do well. Lectures are somewhat boring but necessary to attend
Not sure why people are complaining, tests were very straightforward and she gave interesting examples to help comprehension of key topics. Would definitely recommend!
A fun person. Can be unclear sometimes.
Not a terrible prof but her tests are atrocious. She tests on random sentences of information plucked randomly from the textbook and the long answers are based on material covered in the lecture. This makes the study load quite heavy.
Very fair prof in my opinion. Did well on term tests solely from reading her slides. Also gives opportunities for bonus marks for the class.
Material in PSYC 2010 was not overly difficult. Had to read the text book because slide shows were very brief summaries. Midterms and exams were supposed to be mostly based on lecture notes but was almost ALL text book related questions. Multiple choice questions had more than one correct answer - you choose the best and hope it's right.
100% need to use the Wileyplus program. Nice enough woman, slides and explanations are sometimes unclear.
I really like this prof. she gives bonus quizzes online to do before the exam which is awesome for practice and it also gives you an extra 3% on your final grade. She also gave everyone an extra 5% on their first exam, she obviously cares about her students. If you attend class and read the textbook, you should be fine :)
I struggle to keep myself awake in her lectures. Very boring prof. Tests are not bad though.
Nice prof with a lot of experience but speaks very soft and monotone making her lectures seem like they last an eternity. Attendance isn't mandatory but she gives good explanations to the material in class which helps. She gives practice quizzes online which, if completed, she will add 3% to a test. Posts all notes online before lectures.
I would not recommend this professor. Her lectures seem very long and I have often times, seen people fall asleep. Attendance in class is not necessary as she does not say much other than what is on the powerpoints. It is overall a boring class.
This prof is very knowledgable about psychology and gives many good examples to help with understanding. Also has lots of very simple tasks that make bonus marks easy. Makes lectures interesting. Strongly recommend
Mercer is very knowledgeable of Psyc. She is nice and caring but her lectures could put you to sleep while you are drinking a coffee. Her voice has a weird tone which also makes her hard to listen too. Overall she is a okay prof.
Michelle is a great professor. She is very on-topic during her lectures, and her slides are pretty easy to read. She posts them ahead of time, which helps as you can know the content you're about to learn ahead of time and allows lectures to just reaffirm the concepts you've already learned. Would recommend taking her.
6 quizzes (out of 8) worth 2.5% each, midterm worth 40%. Average psych course.
Exams are all multiple choice, easy if you read her slide shows. Everything posted online and take advantage of the bonus points offered. She easy to listen to and makes the heavy load of material enjoyable to hear about
LOTS of material, which requires a lot of time studying. She gives bonus quizzes that give extra marks and they are great help for the exams. Not too hard if you go to class and take notes. She gives a lot of relatable examples. Shes very interesting and intriguing so I love her lectures. Makes boring concepts fun. Didn't use textbook at all
Michelle is a sweet lady and tries to get the class involved with her lectures. I found the lectures to get boring at times and many people would fall asleep in her class. Ive never had the desire to fall asleep in a class until hers. She posts her power points online so attendance isnt mandatory. All you need is a large coffee and your laptop.
Michelles da bomb. She wears a different color pair of pants everyday. Course was a tough one, wish there was more things available to boost marks.
Great slides given. Doesn't use the textbook. Puts practice on WileyPlus but it isn't for a grade. Lectures are eh, she only reads from her slides, but her stories and games are cool. You could easily stay home and study and do just as good. Tests and final are all multiple choice and very straightforward ones at that.
This woman is by far the best prof I've ever had. She is super entertaining, classes are fun and she really helps break down course material. U will have to read to pass but she does help you gain extra percentages by quizzes. I just love her!
Taking psych 1000 online. She posts the bare minimum on D2L, you really need to read the textbook, you won't do well on exams or assignments on just her notes. Not very responsive to emails. But the course is pretty easy
Michelle is a great prof. She tries to engage students with fun games in lectures. Two midterms and a final. She gave everyone an extra 5% on the first midterm, and she offers bonus online quizzes that can boost your overall average by 3%. For this alone, I would recommend taking her. Read the textbook, and go to class and it will be a breeze.
Dr. Mercer's lectures are not the most interesting, but you can get the majority of the information from the textbook and her posted lecture powerpoints. She wants her students to succeed and provided us with the opportunity of getting an extra 5% through extra credit work. Would take again.
Dr. Mercer is a good Prof. her lectures aren't overly interesting but she is knowledgeable and can teach the material. Her slides aren't amazing so a textbook is recommended. Prepare for long tests that are comprehensive and test the entirety of the units covered.
Very easy class with a buddy, find someone to ask psych questions to in prep about a week before each exam and youll be fine.
You need to go to this class to do well. The format for both the midterms is multiple choice, fill in the blanks and long answers. The long answers come directly from her lectures. Her chapter notes are helpful but, could use some re organizing as there hard to follow sometimes. However, she does allow 5 extra percent if you do online quizzes.
Course was an all around MESS. All the course material is taught to you by ANOTHER teacher via videos that cover the bare min of the text chapters. You literally need to memorize every detail for the chapters (40 pages each) + the minor and "unimportant" things. Exams were WAY too difficult, phrased complicated and confusing af. No study guides.
You have to attend this class to do well and this is made very clear. If you have a background in biology this course is a good choice, otherwise it may be a bit overwhelming. Read the textbook, go to class, and youll do fine. Practice quizzes online for bonus marks, and she basically tells you what the long answer test questions will be in class.
Hands down the rudest prof. Does not care about her students. AWFUL.
Dr. Mercer was a good prof! She tries her best to make some dry psych lectures accessible and relatable to real life and shows fun videos to help with engagement. Approachable and clear expectations. Lectures fairly similar to powerpoint notes but refers to text often for testing. Overall a great educator who is passionate about her subject!
Super unforgiving when it comes to grading and does not care at all about her students
I took Psych 1000 online, and it although it did involve a lot of work, I liked Dr. Mercer. She gave assignments every two weeks, they were timed and difficult but it helped you learn the material. The assignments also helped you prepare for the midterm, but the midterm was much easier. Reading the textbook is NECESSARY though to do well!
I really liked psych1000 with Michelle Mercer. She gave us many quizes online to prepare us for the exams. She was really good at explaining concepts in class. The course was fairly easy. It is not mandatory to attend classes but it helps a lot to come. Also its very important to read the textbook all the time.
Dr. Mercer is a great prof if you don't mind that attendance is mandatory. She has good notes, but goes into detail in the lectures and basically tells you what she will test on. If you skip class, you won't have all the details you need to answer the long answers. If you're a bio major, I would highly recommend 2010, as it's an easy A.
PSY2010 is the 4th psychology class I have taken at MUN. Michele Mercer is great at teaching in an in-class setting, very informative on the subject, likes having class discussions on topics. That said her tests by far have been the hardest I have ever done; timed our last midterm to 40 min. When switched to online instruction it wasnon-existent.
Professer Mercer was my favourite prof in my winter semester! I took psych 1000 with her and She completely sold me on psych as a career. Her lectures were very interesting and she also gave real life scenarios to help you relate to the information. She offered bonus marks which is the reason I passed with an A! Highly recommend.
Wouldnt give students lettuces for online classes. She would just post 90page slide shows each week. Theres little to no communication with her. She doesnt answer her emails and when she does she gives little to no help. You cant miss any assignments due to accidents, internet lag, etc... because she wont allow you to redo it for any reason.
Michelle is a very hard prof to reach. She never response's to your emails and if she does she is very vague or get's mad at you for using the wrong email. She won't allow you to redo any assignments or midterms for any reason even a funeral. She doesn't post lectures or communicate with students very often. slideshows are very empty and useless.
The instructor fails to provide lectures for her online psychology course. Often times she even throws in questions on exams that are not in the textbook. Very tough grader and shows a lack of empathy for students. Doesn't give back exams and provides insufficient materials for study.
She made it very clear that there would be no makeup assignments, Even for a funeral or death in the family. Very harsh in my opinion. Would not recommend for anyone doing psychology, especially for first year students!
She is not very understanding. Quizzes are pretty easy but the midterm was super hard!
Done class online with her & she only posted her notes and told us to read the book (said that her notes werent really good enough to study off of and told us to focus more on reading the book). Posted no lectures of herself going through the notes either. She didnt teach me the course, the book did.
If you email about any issue, all she will say is to look at the course outline. She is not understanding when it comes to missing deadlines & assignments as she told one student in an email that even a funeral is not an reason to get a deferral. Wouldnt take her again
Doing an online class with Dr. Mercer was the worst class of my first semester at MUN. She provided zero resources besides the book and useless PowerPoints without context. Don't try to email her because "her inbox is full", maybe considering she does nothing for our class she should have time to open some of her emails.
Very hard to get in contact with, her mailbox is always full and she didn't post any other way to reach her. She is a tough grader and doesn't care about her students.
rude, tough grader, doesn't give enough, seems to want students to fail.
I did psychology 1000 with her, and I dropped it just before the deadline. It seems like she wants her students to fail; shes very rude to students. Don't bother trying to reach her as she claimed to be "too busy" to answer student emails. I personally don't recommend her.
Unfair assessments, seems to want students to fail, tests are impossible to complete, doesnt care to respond to emails/questions.
Took her for fall 2019. I dont have anything bad to say about her. Sort of surprised by the recent reviews on her. But i guess she is a different person when teaching remotely. From my experience, a solid choice, and happy to talk if u have a question. Was always happy and enjoyed to have a laugh with students. overall course was real boring tho
The worst prof I have had at MUN She may appear to be kind in class but it seems to me and others that her goal as a prof is to make students hate her. During COVID she has shown zero effort to help students The textbook is what teaches you. she does not like emails. she does not do anything in the course besides tell you to email TA's. AVOID.
If I could give zero I would. Her questions were vague even with lots of studying. She will question specifically about statistics regarding a topic which in no way a student will be able to memorize. No communications whatsoever (emails unanswered). Expects you to memorize every little detail every unit. 70 MC and Fill in Blank question in 60mins
The course is very interesting but you need to read the book for all the quizzes and mid terms.
Her recorded lectures give very little information about the topics, she only reads what is on the slides and don't go into detail. There's also sections of the chapter she makes you teach yourself. Make sure you study the book inside and out
A new timed assignment every week! assignments were 45 minutes in length with 50 questions. She said because of the pandemic she's making the online tests "harder"
She does not post her own lectures just short videos from other people. Expected to read the whole chapter from text on your own and take a 30 question quiz in 20 mins each week. Summary PowerPoints are very vague, quiz questions contain very detailed thigs from the text that no one would remember. AVOID and choose a prof that will teach you.
Extremely rude. There is no point to ask her questions or for help as she answers her emails in little detail and in a way that comes off as extremely rude and does not help at all. AVOID
Don't know how the high rating from March 2021 can be seriously considered helpful. Most ratings of Michelle Mercer since Fall 2020 rated her as 1 or 2 for quality; 4 or 5 for difficulty. Never answered questions; just said read the book. Tests included material not covered in lectures. Huge numbers of slides without explanations. Worse prof ever.
Never answered questions; just said read the book. Tests included material not covered in lectures. Huge numbers of slides without explanations. Worse prof ever.
Very hard first year course. She isn't helpful at all and refuses to answer emails. Lecture slides are useless and if you don't know the textbook word for word you are completely screwed. Timed assignments that make you answer 50 questions in 45 minutes and a midterm with 60 questions in 60 minutes. I do not recommend her at all, take Mark Herbert!
I had psych 1000 online with Michelle, and it was not fun. Her lectures are honestly pointless to even watch as the information on the quizzes, midterm and finals are nothing like the information which she gives. Reading the textbook is necessary if you want to pass this course. She also doesn't tend to give good responses to questions you may have
Avoid if you don't like teaching yourself! The textbook is your savour in this course as every single evaluation comes from there. Lectures are not worth watching as they're extremely condensed and don't have a lot to do with things you actually need to know.
Not a good prof, I loved the course material but the prof made me hate it. Test are really hard. Would not take her again.
Absolute Bruh moment. Mic Drop
Awful, just awful. Michelle is such a rude uncaring prof. there is no point in trying to ask her anything because in return you will get a saucy remark. I did not enjoy this course at all especially because Michelle did not make it one bit enjoyable. her lectures mean nothing, its being tested on the textbook for every assignment, test or quiz
she is the worst prof at mun by far, do not take her if you have other profs to choose from. she is super rude and her quizzes were super unfair.
Be prepared to use the textbook as your main source of information majority of her questions on her assessments come from the book. Shes also the worst prof Ive ever had. Super rude and dont even bother trying to get something deferred. Shell then post in brightspace saying how you should never have to defer something regardless of the reason
Would rather take any other prof over her. Doesn't like to answer questions (gives rude responses), gives more questions than you have time to answer on a test, and refuses to listen to feedback/help at all. If you take a remote course you will be teaching yourself with the textbook.
She is the worst prof I have ever had! Do not take her courses!! she is extremely rude and will not reply to any of her emails, she doesn't care about any of her students, she doesn't teach you anything (You have to teach yourself) and her exams are so hard, she has the most irrelevant questions on her exams. She should be fired, worst prof ever!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF, if it wasn't for the money I would have dropped. Expected to know very small details in textbook that no one remembers. Quizzes each week that are 30 MC/20 mins. No one has time to study that hard for one quiz. She does not even post her own lectures and the slideshows are very vague. I love psyc and this course, minus prof
Such a horrible prof! Such a rude person, I was very stressed about my exam and contacted her for help and she responded with a link for technical issues. No concern for her students. With all her reviews I don't know how she still works at mun, she should be fired. If you want to save your mental health do not take ANYTHING WITH MICHELLE MERCER!
AVOID! Much info from the textbook that is so minimal. The prof does not post her own lectures just small clips of someone else, notes are vague and require a lot of textbook reading. Love the course not the prof for the course. Makes you discouraged. Makes me feel like dropping out. Mental health comes first and yours will not with this course:(((
Do not take her course! She is the worst teacher ever, doesn't care about students or students' mental health, I don't know how she is not fired yet, she deserves to be fired due to her lack of teaching or caring and give a job to someone who deserves it and who would actually help their students
The worst professor Ive ever had. Does not care about her students or their personal lives. Does not include nearly enough information on notes and makes no efforts to help students in any way. Recommended students drop her class 6 weeks into semester because of the software she decides to use after refunds had gone down to 25% return
Dr. Mercer is one of the worst profs I have had to take during my time at MUN. Not only does she set the tone at the begining of the semester she does not wish to be contacted for any reason except what SHE deems as emergency related, she will blatantly tell you to drop her course if you suggest at any point you are struggling or if you want help.
TERRIBLE PROF! her lectures and slides were useless so not only did she waste her own time by making them, but she wastes students time by them listening to her bland, monotone voice read them. If you have Michelle just read the book, don't even waste your time attending her lectures.
HORRIBLE! Really wish I had read these reviews before taking her class. If you email her with the email in the syllabus, she will get mad at you and doesnt want to be contacted period. Super rude and unproffesional responses that dont even make sense half the time and she doesnt post relevant lectures
I have never had a prof so unwilling to help her students. Any email sent was responded to in a rude manner. The midterm was ridiculously hard, you have to know the textbook front and back and she doesn’t post lectures.
Never experienced a prof so horrible in my entire life. Exhibits no empathy for her students and will go out of her way to make your life harder. She is a bully and I would avoid taking her at all costs. I have maintained a 4.0 for my entire degree but I am struggling in her course. If you go to her for help, she will be extremely condescending.
This professor leaves a lot to be desired. She is NOT interactive in the class. Her lectures don't match the book or become close to cover the book, which she pulls the questions from. Essentially, just read the book . Do not bother with the lectures. She is very abrasive in her responses as well. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS
Pretty good actually her videos have a lot of information
Michelle was vey absent in this course and literally told us not to email her at all, she gives difficult timed assignments every week, which are just difficult quizzes, and 2 tests which are worth a ridiculous amount. The only good thing is that she is very clear in her expectations... READ THE TEXTBOOK
I took Michelle Mercer for psychology for an elective and only took her since she was the only prof left. I understand why now. Very unhelpful, told us not to message her with our questions because she has thousands of students and we are not her priority. No point in looking at her slides since her exams are based solely off the book.
Worst professor at MUN. Her lectures are pointless since none of the concepts taken are addressed in the exam. You can only do well if you study from the textbook, otherwise good luck.
