Michelle was by far my favorite teacher I've ever had at WSU! She is so nice and helpful. She's so funny during class, and that makes the class more fun. She is willing to help anyone and goes above and beyond to make sure every person understands. Great teacher and person!
There is homework at the end of each chapter. The best professor EVER! She's so funny but everything is related to the class. She explains things until everyone understands it. She really cares about students and her prof ession. She is an amazing person. I am very Blessed to have had her class and I would definitely take it a million times again.
AMAZING person overall. Gets to know everyone.
The worst class I have ever taken. This new learning technique at wright state is not good at all. You are expected to learn on your own. She tries to make the class funny. She wants you to figure everything on your own. I don't know why she is teaching this class the way she is. AVOID!!!
Michelle made the class enjoyable by relating the chemistry topic to real life encounters. She took the time out to make it personal and made a connection with each student. She gave review sheets for exams and review sessions which were very helpful. This was fast paced but worth it!! Take her over other WSU chemistry prof's for sure!
She is an amazing teacher, she cares about students available for help. I would certainly recommend her for CHM1210 the material is boring but she makes it fun.
She's a big proponent of what she calls "active learning" which I came to realize far too late really just means she teaches the class like a seminar: she says her piece about one small aspect of the chapter and expects you to learn the rest yourself. If you have questions, ask your group, otherwise you better sit on Kahn Academy or the like.
She's the toughest professor i have ever seen. She's funny but she want you to learn on your own. It seems like she doesn't want help and she just want you to work. Lot of homework. I would not take it again with her.
Michelle is amazing at her job hands down, very personable and is overall a great person. She really does want you to understand chemistry and makes it fun too!
This was the worst class I've ever taken. Tries to explain chemistry at the speed of light. She simply doesn't teach, is lazy and dosen't care. Avoid her at all costs. Forces students to buy a $90 online book and assigns 50 Q HW a night. and never goes over it. HW is nothing like her exams. Tells students to ask table mates if we don't get it.
Continuation: She will not go over it before giving you the quiz from the homework. She also wants you to learn from your fellow classmates. Who are ALSO LEARNING this topic.
The worst professor I've ever taken at WSU. even if you spend a week working on the papers, expect to get a horrible grade. AVOID!!!
Don't ever take the Class with her. I swear she is a tough grader and she reads everything on lab report and exams. She's so accurate when she grades. She thinks that the students is like machine or a computer, that they can do anything anytime. Please don't take it. I'm saving you.
This class is so stressful and the assignments are back to back. Avoid taking this class if you have classes to be worried about.
Newsome is a terrible instructor. Her "lectures" are short and don't cover anything of relevance. The homework assinged through Tophat is not consistent with the chapters. Her grading is hard and the quizzes are even harder. She does not like to be emailed and will throw a fit if you email her. STAY AWAY!!
Do not take her! she is one of hardest teachers i have ever had at wright state univeristy. Grading is so strict and very hard and the TAs are suck ups to her who also grade hard. This class is a joke so please do not take this!
Showing up to class is a must, as her active learning classroom has no "real" notes. All examples are done in class. Group assignments are done in class and can't be made up. She moves fairly quickly, so if you don't understand something you must go to office hours. Funny and straight to the point. Interactive learning classroom with lots of work
Taking this class was the worst decision I've ever take. She does not listen students and she wants us to learn on our own. She thinks that we are all going to understand. Please dont take that class with her. Im saving you.
Just dont take it with her. Shes not respectful. Shes not helpful.
That class was the worst class ever. She doesnt want to help. Shes a tough grader. AVOID.
Don't take it with her because she is a really tough grader, and she doesn't care if you pass her class or not. She assigns you a lot of homework, and with stupid mistakes, she will deduct some points. Here exams are really difficult no matter how long you study for them. Avoid Avoid her.
Do not recommend. Class averages on midterms are in the low 70's to high 50's with no curve. Very tough, no real notes. Your grade an rely on the people in your group. Avoid the scale up CHM class at all costs.
Michelle has an active learning approach to teaching so if you like notes, run the other way. She has a tendency to assign "prep work" before class that isn't worth a grade but will remove your access to quizzes if you haven't done it. Your grade is reliant on the people at your table or Google. And overall there is a complete lack of organization.
Gives word problems on tests and does not give points for work. Marks off the whole thing if the answer is wrong and one word problem can be worth up to 18 points of the 100 point test.
Prep work every night & some light hw. Notetakers: sometimes it's hard due to the scale-up format. Exams are difficult but reflect the ACS exam at the end of the 6 weeks. 1 of 3 tests are dropped, which helps. Michelle is firm but fair. Her sense of urgency makes sense to me now and I appreciate it. Take ownership, work hard, and you'll do fine.
If possible do not take this class with her. She flies through lecture and doesn't actually teach. She either expects you to know how to already do things or teach yourself. On her exams if you don't have something the exact way she wants, it's wrong. She also makes her exams way too long for the time given so everything always feels rushed.
Michelle is a good person, very funny, and easy to talk to. But when it comes to the actual class she doesn't teach well. Exams are too hard and too long, usually have to rush to finish. only extra credit you'll ever get is through Kahoo or racing to get answers. so only select few get the extra credit because they are fast. avoid if you can.
Make sure you show up to class. Everyday youre either learning something or doing a lab. Every class is important. She gives great feedback. She also holds true to her deadlines. Overall great teacher, explains things in a way you can understand better , and jokes around a lot making the class that much more fun.
Expects that you have some chem background even though it's an intro course. Moves very quickly. Never gets homework back before exams to know what you need to work on. Be ready to teach yourself and I never miss a single class and am (was) a 4.0 student. No opportunity to review tests so what is needed to improve for final??? Who knows!
She is amazing, she takes a hard subject and makes it enjoyable. If your willing to do what is asked if you , youll pass just by doing it her way shell make sure you learn just be willing to do it.
By far one of the worst experiences I have had at Wright State. Avoid taking Michelle's section of CHM 1210.
I enjoyed the class a ton. It was hard but by far the best chem experience of my life.
She's really annoying and assumes everybody learns the same way. She forces you to work in groups. I felt like I never had to learn anything for myself. I learned more in my lab than I did in lecture. She can be funny, which is a saving grace, but she's very stuck in that what works for her must work for everyone else.
Show up to class, participate, do the prep work, take notes and you'll do fine. Exams are just like the review. Partial credit. Ask for help and you'll get it. She teaches an active learning class-if you don't enjoy that, take a lecture class (instead of getting upset and writing a bad review). If you haven't ever taken chem, take intro chem.
Good teacher with good intentions but she rushes through the material in the active learning class to the point where when you're lost you're just LOST. Im used to good grades but not in here. Im not even going to get started on Lab.
I enjoy Michelle's class. It can be tough at times and it is fast paced (which says the 1st day) but there are several SI sessions throughout the week and she is always willing to sit down and go over things with you again during office hours or SI sessions. This is a class which actually involves effort which most freshman aren't used to yet.
She gives multiple different things along the semester for you to pass this class. Shes funny and her testing is not difficult at all.
Amazing teacher and so funny! Actually cares about each student. Lots of office hours for help! Incredibly hard course though. Most people seem to fail her exams or do mediocre.
Her class is active learning, which was a great for a first chem class. She gives a lot of extra credit on quizzes and tests. In order to pass her class you need to pass the lab, so participation is necessary. You can score relatively average (low B) on tests and still end the class with an A through regular participation and doing the homework.
Worse experience ever had with a professor was with Michelle. She never replied to emailsthe times she did she was very rudeShe acts put out to do her job and fix grades that were her mistake. Once there was an average of a 30some and she saidIm not curving a test for the lack there of effortI teach the same way every year and the grades fluctuate
Out of all the CHM 1210 teachers she is your best bet. Test are difficult but easy to study for.
Michelle is amazing. She is so funny and incredibly kind. While her tests are hard, as long as you study and go to SI sessions, getting above an 80% on an exam won't be hard. I recommend getting to know her and show that you are dedicated and hard-working. She definitely WILL NOT put up with laziness or disrespect. I highly recommend!!!!
Michelle offers students the opportunity to succeed in her class. This opportunity is not easy, however. You can learn so much if you do the prep work, pay attention in class, and study her practice exams. That is also the key to doing well in her class. Go to as many review sessions as you can. She does problems that are similar to exam problems.
I really enjoyed Michelle's class. She has a very hands-on approach and enjoys teamwork. She does drops 1 HW, 1 quiz, and a whole day's worth of lab material. Plus 1 exam is dropped! She has a whole army of LAs, GTAs, a TA, and a SI to help. Between their study sessions and office hours as well as hers, its an easy pass. Her study guides are great
So far shes my favorite professor. Shes hilarious and offers lots of extra credit. She drops the lowest exam grade, lowest quiz grade, lowest lab grade, and you dont have to take the final if you have an A average on your midterms. Your midterm average is your final exam grade.
I enjoyed going to her class. She always made it fun and interesting. She always made sure people understood her and would do tons of examples in class. She also sets up all her quizzes with extra credit. You also get a notecard for each exam so you can use up to 4 notecards on her last exam. If you get an A average on exams you exempt the final.
Michelle is an awesome person I wish I was able to now her earlier on during the semester. She is a great lecturer and provides examples and practice problems for in class and out of class. She also makes a lot of jokes and comments. If you are struggeling go to her office hours and she will help you. Overall a great professor.
One thing you will not be in her class is bored. She makes lectures entertaining and keeps you involved. She prefers active learning so you will not be sitting in a lecture hall listening to her drone on and on. Her classes are difficult but if you do all of the work assigned and study, you will do fine. I don't know why she is rated so low.
Michelle is fantastic! With COVID, this class was moved online so Im disappointed I didnt get to meet her in person! Expect to work in her class. She will NOT give away grades. The material is hard and her exams are rough but she does offer a lot of extra credit. Go to her study groups! They saved my grade. Shes tough but fair.
One of my favorite professors! I wish I could have her again. She is very passionate about her students, but she will make you work. She does a lot of active learning, so expect to participate. Take advantage of her review sessions and you should have no problem.
Does not give informative lectures, often leaves students to their own device to learn. Had a habit of putting information on tests that was not learned in class.
Michelle is an amazing instructor. A lot of people in my class complained about her but I noticed those were the people who didnt try hard. If you pay attention and ask questions youll get a good grade. She also provides extra credit on some quizzes and with different opportunities. Does have a lot of group work though. Overall great professor.
Michelle Newsome teaches in a way that is easy to understand and pick up on the material quickly. Assignment corrections were allowed for half credit back and extra credit was offered. She made learning fun and projects were hands on. She does a great job building material off of prior lessons and everything learned is relevant to future chapters.
Very interactive class. If you have any questions, professor is accessible outside of class. Uses breakout rooms on Blackboard Collaborate. Uses ALEKS. Uses Tophat and you can go back to the slides. Nice person and good sense of humor. My understanding of Chemistry has drastically improved after taking this class.
Honestly I did not thank she was that bad. I actually really liked her. She is really funny in class and she is very keen on active learning so prepare to participate and be called on lol. She helps you if you dont know the answer but she can get frustrated when people dont pay attention and ask dumb questions so just pay attention.
This was my first time having Michelle as a professor and I wish I could have her every semester! Her class is very interactive and gives you a great chance to practice exactly what's going to be on the exams. She's extremely approachable and cares about her students. People who don't like her aren't willing to put in the work or come to class.
Michelle was a great professor. She has previously teached at the high school level and that is very beneficial for a college professor because the professor is usually more focused on making sure you know the material instead of just expecting you to learn it on your own. Very helpful, makes you think, and grades very hard. Make sure you focus.
Michelle was a great person though her chemistry jokes were really bad I really did enjoy her class but man it was probably the worst class I have ever had. It was sooo hard (for me anyway). She went too fast for me and I was behind. I even went to weekly tutoring sessions and still did horrible on all the exams and ACS (I passed with a C).
Michelle is so friendly and a great teacher. I hate chemistry, but I enjoyed coming to her class. Every class day there is homework due and some type of group activities, which I personally don't enjoy but know some people do. Her exams are not easy but it is possible to do well on them if you put in the effort.
Michelle is the best professor Ive ever had. Chemistry is tough so youll be glad you have Michelle who is a great teacher to help you get through it. The class is very interactive and focuses on active learning, which was so helpful for understanding concepts. Be prepared to take responsibility for your own grade, study, and participate in class.
An amazing teacher. Saved me from bad home situations in more than one way with her caring personality and eclectic teaching. Chemistry is difficult but she made exciting, and we didn't have to read a book. She explains in a way you can understand. A lot of homework but I like doing homework. She personally introduced me to my now closest friend.
She has a goofy sense of humor, but it helps you remember things. Go to class and any review sessions you can go too!! Answers any questions you have. She will do anything to help you not fail as long as you try.
great class , have to do ur prep work, study hard. a lot of Aleks H.W
Even though I may not want to admit it I learned a lot in her course. She is a great professor and you can tell she really loves her students and her job. Her course is really hard and fast paced so you will have to study a lot on your own to truly understand the material. She seems like a great person but her course is very hard.
Material is hard but she gives lots of tips and tricks to succeed. Classes are MASSIVE so it's better to get a hold of an assistant for small things otherwise you'll have to wait a day to hear back. You're expected to be a responsible adult and do the required work in your own time. Ask lots of questions and go to SI sessions often, you'll be fine.
Let me be honest, Michelle is a great professor and she cares. I personally did not like her teaching style. It does not fit everyone. She uses more team work and expects you to go home and figure out answers on your own and come back the next day as if you mastered it. She moves on pretty quick so I highly recommend studying a lot outside of class
She's a kind person but I definitely don't recommend her for a teacher. She rarely answers email questions and gets off topic a lot in class. The only benefit of her class is that she gives extra credit. if I could give her a 0 rating I would.
Her chemistry course was one of the worst courses I took at WSU. She does nothing in the form of real notes. Class consists of group exercises, that may even be for a grade. She would also give quizzes on the material. Class is chaotic, loud, and overall unorganized. I would not take Chemistry 1 with her again.
takes points off for everything on exams even if they are correct. overall very hard to keep up with. doesnt teach new information , she just expects you to know it
Want to have a professor who actually cares whether you understand and is willing to help you get there? Someone who is passionate about the subject matter? Newsome is the one. She is by far one of the best professors I have had so far at Wright State...and if she taught beyond GenChem higher levels...I would consider taking a minor in CHM...
Michelle is an awesome Professor! She truly cares about her students and she is a professor who will help you grow during college career! She is someone who understands her students and is willing to help where help is needed She taught from slides she made, and we worked in groups so others can learn from each other! 10/10
She is an amazing Professor with highly interactive classes. She doesn't just explain she makes sure you remember it for a long time. I attended all her classes but attended SI sessions before exams. She provides many extra credit opportunities. Save all her prep worksheets because they are really useful for further chemistry classes.
Leaving a negative review everyday until the lab experience improves so I can feel better about wasting my money on this absolute poor excuse of a chemistry lab. I highly recommend taking your chemistry courses with a lab at a different university. Respect your time and money and go somewhere else
Such a frustrating teaching style. Manic and chaotic and very difficult to learn from. Expects you to learn something after seeing it once. You will chase busy work 24/7 in this class. The grading is arbitrary and unfair. She has suggested many times that she prefers to see students struggle. You must do it her way or you'll get a zero.
when I first met Michelle, I hated her, she was mean and hard to understand. by the end of that semester, I loved her. her class is chaotic and loud, but she will teach you chemistry. yes, I do agree her grading is very strict and hard and that can be frustrating. but do the prep and Aleks and listen to her and you will get very good at chemistry.
She is a great professor. This class was not easy and you have to do a lot of work outside of class, but if you do that you will be fine. Just make sure you know the materials, if you need to, absolutely study outside of class. The SI sessions are EXTREMELY helpful!! Overall, i learned more from her than from any other professor here.
WHAT A B WORD. That is all I have to say. Do not take her or seek her out for anything.
She will eat you!!!! Choose a different professor
Very rude when I had her. She would give a practice problem on the board and have everyone answer it. As the class was solving it she would rush everyone and say we should finish the problem in less than a minute and then whether the student was finished or not she would randomly call on a student to answer in front of the class. Did not enjoy.
Great professor! Even in a sped up summer course.
Guys! Be kind.Youl cause Severt another miscarriage due to stress. She is sensitive and moody. Her and Ritucci are trying hard for their baby. They make a great team! Their marriage is beautiful. She the best teacher and I'd take all of her classes. She is so pretty and smart! Cuz of her I have so much success. WSU is the best school cuz of her!
Do yourself a favor and look up: "YSHS teacher settles, resigns". She is disrespectful to others and does a lot of yelling. Would not recommend.
Don't listen to bad reviews; those come from people who don't come to class or take accountability. Holding students accountable is NOT a bad thing; some people are just soft. She is fantastic, I had a great time! She will also make sure you get a good grade if you ask questions and try.
