lots of writing on overheads, but easy exams.

she "had no time to make up an exam" so it was from an exam bank, did not relate

Very willing to help, genuinely concerned with your success

All lectures come from the text books, and the exams have werid questions

her exams pick the smallest details from the text so that the class average hovers around a 52%
Exam questions were picky... based on US stats from text. Class average was slightly higher than 50%. Did not use web CT, which would have been helpful as there was A LOT of overheads. Class was boring.
need to know American stats and tiny details from text in order to do well in course
had to know minor, unimportant statistics from the textbook for exams...did not elaborate on overheads, just read what was written on them then moved onto the next one
The final exam had absolutely nothing to do with what was taught in the actual course! It was ridiculous.
I can not seem to get rid of this prof... She teaches every single FRHD course and is terrible. Marks way too hard, and exams are impossible unless you have a photographic memory. Has nothing to do with main concept, but silly details.
haaa, I can't get rid of her either!!! Life isn't fair.
The material is quite interesting but wow, does the prof ever suck....all her notes are basically the subtitles in the text..who really is going to memorize 600 pages of a text for an exam...no one!
had her for 3 times, she makes you apply everything for exams, had to read exam questions over a few times to understand what she means.
i've had her for 3 classes and in all of them exam questions were impossibly, picky or incoherent, lectures were dull and straight from the text and any questions asked were answered with rambling that left you more confused!
hardest prof EVER!! picks the dumbest details from the text (eg. "statistics canada 1998 defines family as...") and she will put all the right definitions for family but you HAVE to know what statistics canada thinks it is...impossible to do well on her exams and thats that...
Required grad course- COMPLETELY unwilling to help inside or outside class (basically unheard of in Grad school), ambiguous lectures that didn't explain anything, talks down to students as if they are really stupid for asking questions, exam average = 71% (most grad classes are 85%). Horrible.
she has the hardest exams i've ever had!!! she's brutal!!! you have to know the smallest deatils that seem extremely irrelevant on exams and none on her questions make sense- HORRIBLE prof!!!!
She has to be the most boring woman i have ever met. AND her exams are absolutely ridiculous...they barely cover anything taught in lectures, its strictly minor details from the textbook and you'd have to be a rocket scientist to remember all that crap. one word: HORRIBLE.
Michele doesn't seem to care about her students at all. She seems to want them to fail. She never really helped out. Her exam is very nit picky so you have to memorize the text verbatim. Her lectures were just headings. Watch out for the TA in this course too. Tara was good but not the other.
I doubt this professor has any knowledge outside of the textbook. Lectures are worthless and exams appear to ask questions in order to "get you", not test your comprehension of the material. I'm sorry, but she is bringing the Family Relations and Human Nutrition department down.
extremely difficult tests that do not measure your understanding of or grasp on the course content. instead of going to lectures, read your textbook 10 times in order to get a decent mark.
the final exam was set to make you fail!
She is quite clear in explaining stuff...alot more than psych profs are for the same material (my major). However, she is really dry and tells the worst jokes ever. The T.A was useless as well
This is my second year with this prof and i really regret taking her class again. She expects way to much for midterms and finals and is basically setting her students up to fail. Take my advice do not take a class with her!
Expects way to much from her students not reasonably whatso ever, dont waste your time or risk your grade average with her, she sucks
This woman used the word "funner" in lecture. She expects nothing more than regurgitation. If you do take a class with her, skip the lectures and just read your textbook, or you'll land up sitting in class feeling homicidal. She proves that monkeys with drug problems could get FRHD doctorates.
She was not sympathetic to students personal or academic difficulties. She indicated that students should deal with problems and refused to give any considerations.
I don't have a problem with her lectures, but definatly don't rely on them to get you through the midterm. Read the text!
All you need to know from her classes are random statistics that will not assist you in your future career. Read the text, skip the lectures and save yourself some agony.
Her thinking: "let me pick out random facts from the textbook to try and trick the students". Read the textbook (her lectures are basically from the text). Don't expect a great mark in her class.
now now. her exams were a bit of a pain in the butt. but she really does love what she does.. and loves her students. this past semester she went out of her way to help me. everyone makes her so so awful.. she's really not.

She write the worst exams humanly possible. I have her again next term and am dropping the course and taking an extra year just so I never have to have her again. Its interesting material but its ruined by her midterm and exams.
Not helpful, regurgitated everything from the textbook. Confusing tests and midterms and terrible seminars.
Great Prof.Really fair!
she's awesome. really interesting lectures, fair exams, and fun.
impossible to stay awake, brutal exams, boring texts, doesn't use courselink, not recommended..
I dont understand why everyone is saying such rude things about her, yeah she has her own personality but so do you...prof preyde is AWESOME, she is incredibly helpful, her midterm & exams are VERY FAIR she gives you many choices, she is a GREAT professor definitely look forward to my class with her next semester she incorporates many materials
Worst prof I have ever had. Her tests are unfair, her TAs suck, they are not willing to provide ANY assistance at all. Emphasizes writing skills WAY too much, yet only gives us midterms to demonstrate these skills. Absolutely awful. Do not take unless you have too, and it sucks to have too :(
Super hard and unfair tests. Only 2 midterms and an exam worth 50%. I would say skip the boring lectures and just read the textbook. It is pointless and boring listening to her.
Lots of course content. First midterm and second midterm had two multiple choice and two essay questions. Boring in class but she is really sweet and cares about what she does. Read the textbook to clarify what she says in class.
Two classes a week which made them longer. She is cute and funny in her own way. Read textbook to supplement what she says in class. Fair midterms if you study enough.
Before starting the class, all these previous ratings really worried me! I thought I was in for a boring class and a horrible grade... The lectures and textbook are a little dry, but really aren't all that bad. I'd consider myself a very average student, and did well on the midterms. If you read the textattend lecture, you'll be fine.
Loved the prof. But the class was drier than the Sahara desert.
This course was my "bird" course this semester. We only had 2 midterms and a final, all were very fair and didn't require a lot of studying. Preyde regurgitates the textbook material, so you really don't need to go to lecture if you read the textbook. She is a sweet lady, but quite boring. I thought this course would be more interesting.
With all due respect, Professor Preyde has been my least favourite prof that I've had a class with. She doesn't engage the class, it's unfairly weighted (25% midterms and 50% exam) and she has awful presentation in her slideshows (when she says "with exceptionalities", she writes w/E". I basically learned from the textbook throughout this course.
Never went to class, didn't use the textbook and got a 90. She literally reads off the slides - even though half of her slides don't make sense and she doesn't elaborate. You have to look half of it up online. She's super dry and I was really looking forward to this class, but it was super boring and she's really boring
Her lectures were very dry and she wasn't too interesting. The material was interesting but she, as a professor, killed it for me. SUPER NICE lady, just shouldn't teach. Also found that she would give different answers to different students (not bias at all) for whatever reason, like a mind change. You need to read the textbook to pass.
WORST professor I have ever and will have at Guelph. If you can in any way avoid having her as a prof, DO IT. Her lecture slides make no sense whatsoever and are filled with made up acronyms. With two 25% midterms and a 50% exam, this class is a joke. Her tests do not even reflect the content in lecture or text AT ALL
Her class is two 25% midterms and a 50% final. The midterms consist of short answers which you cannot get perfect on even if you know the content as she also marks for grammar. Lectures are confusing and her slides are essentially her trying to copy the textbook but putting into different words to avoid plagiarism. Her explanations are confusing.
Midterms were short/long answers that were given before time, but only had 50 minutes to complete in-class. 50% of your grade was based on sentence structure and grammar which was not reasonable for period of time given. The topics were interesting but her slides are disorganized and have some outdated stats.
Im really surprised by Dr. Preydes reviews! She is a real gem. I will say that FRHD 3090 was very test heavy; two midterms and a 50% final, but its mainly based on class material. As long as you go to lectures, you will be fine! Her tests are designed to make you think. She is fair.
Great lady, awful prof. Slides made no sense. She gives different answers to students. Excessssssive amount of reading for tests that only have 20 MC. Focuses on grammar which is annoying during exams. She's an awesome lady, so sweet and kind. But she is unreasonable with her exams. (3 midterms, 1 final). This class stressed me out to the max.
A really kind woman, not a great prof. It really upsets me that she focuses on grammar and structure in exams rather than content. When you're given 50 minutes to complete a short answer & multiple choice you don't have time to make sure everything is perfect, and this is not an English course. Hated this class so much.
Worst Prof ever. Definitely should not be able to teach this course again. Short answer questions are completely based on grammar, syntax and dangling prepositions - not actual content. She should be teaching english or linguistics. Not helpful or approachable, reads off of slides, extremely monotone. HUGE disappointment, wasted elective.
She makes us do these short answer questions on our midterms that are worth so much and she expects them to be PERFECT because she gives them beforehand, such a hard marker when it comes to these questions. It is hard under pressure to remember everything we practiced beforehand and she's so tough.
One of the worst FRHD classes i've ever taken. It was very test heavy, going to lectures were pointless and unhelpful, and she cared more about grammar and punctuation on her midterms than the actual quality of your response.
Worst class I've ever taken! Marks consist entirely of midterms and final exams. Each midterm has 2 long answer questions on it which she expects you to prepare ahead of time and memorize. Written questions are graded almost entirely on spelling, grammar and your hand writing rather than on the actual content. This class ruined this topic for me.
This class was really disappointing. The information is really interesting, however, Dr. Preyde made the course really unenjoyable. She seems like a really great person, but the format of the course needs to be changed. It feels as though all students in her class are set up for failure.
I'm not sure how Preyde still has a job. Kind lady, worst prof I have ever had. Reads off her slides and is unable to answer additional questions on the topic. Never responds to discussion board questions, rarely responds to emails, and ignores questions in class. When highlighting different theories, she giggled through it rather than explain it.
I have had Preyde before for a different class, also a mandatory class, and my opinion hasnt changed in the slightest. If I had the choice I would not have taken this class. She does not respond to emails, discussion boards, or question in class. Terrible at clarifying assignments, and her grading is based mainly on grammar??? Very disappointed
This professor had no sympathy for the fact that we are in a pandemic & have other courses, as she assigned 9-11 chapters plus various other readings for EACH midterm. She avoids answering questions she does not want to answer, is horrible at giving clarification/insight. I've never had a BASc prof take marks off for grammar/structure of writing???
Marks based entirely on two midterms and a final which required lockdown browser and webcam even during pandemic which none of my other profs required. There are no written assignments that allow you to make up your mark. Final exam with webcam is over 100 multiple choice questions. Would never take her class again.
one of the worst profs i have had she would not listen to anything students had concerns about classmates went to dean as she would not listen to students.
Michelle should re-consider the topics she is teaching as she seems to care more about your grammar than actually knowing the class content. She is a very timid speaker and her lectures are dry and hard to sit through. 100% test based course w marks taken off for grammar in hand written essay questions. Gets defensive if you questions her at all.
Professor Preyde gives off horse girl vibes.
The course is graded based on 2 midterms (20% & 30% respectively), as well as a 50% exam. Lectures are dry as Dr. Preyde reads off of the slides. Expects perfect grammar and spelling on the short answer questions, despite the limited time given to complete the midterms. She expects us to write 4.5 pages in 80 minutes for midterm 2. Terrible class.
Extremely disappointed. I wish I did not take this class with her. Her outline is completely test based, having 2 midterms (20% and 30% of the final grade), and a final exam (50% of final grade). The tests are brutally difficult. She also is a dull lecturer, and reads off of her slides. I highly suggest staying out of Professor Preyde's classes.
Bad grade on the midterm = no opportunity to improve your grade Never answers emails or posts course updates. Very dull and INCONSISTENT. Outline said 1-2 essay q's for midterm 2, then weeks leading to the exam she decides it'll be 2 essay q's and 3 short answer. 2 days before the exam she removes the 3 short answer and only announced in class!
The only positive thing I can say is that she is very kind and responds to emails quickly. Her class is painfully dry and does not give students an opportunity to demonstrate/improve their learning. Instead of assigning an essay, she gives test questions in advance, and expects essay quality test responses. Would not recommend unless mandatory.
straight buns, sweet lady but not a good prof at all. Can't believe im paying for this. Slides are as bland as a mayo sandwich.
Extremely disappointed. I would give her a zero if I could. I would suggest not taking her classes as it is very hard to well in and the lectures are very boring.
Unfortunately this professor is incredibly disorganized and has very poor grading criteria for written short answer questions on midterms with no clear criteria given. I love the content of this class but students are graded so harshly and this is even affecting students who study and put their best effort in. This is unacceptable.
Unfortunately, this course was extremely difficult to pass, as the professor appeared to hold a strong bias against our generation. The class was poorly organized, with unclear criteria and inconsistent instructions for tests and assignments. It seems that her approach to teaching reflects a lack of genuine commitment to student learning.
She's a hard marker but a good Professor
Genuinely a good professor, tests are hard but easy to get an 80 if you do the work
Enjoyed this class, very knowledgable professor
You need professors like Preyde to give you a reality check and take things seriously. University is not a bed of roses, and what lies beyond the classroom is even worse. Preyde made my life miserable for a few months, and my endurance was pushed to the limit. Once I was done, I realized it was necessary, and I learned a great deal in her class.
Very easy to reach outside of class
I don't understand why there are so many negative comments. She's kind, responsive, and always available after class. Lectures cover the assigned readings. She gives hints for what's on tests, shares one short answer q beforehand, and gives make up opportunities. If you show up, do the readings, and study, it's an easy A. I enjoyed this class.
The lectures themselves were not very engaging. Prof is clearly knowledgeable about the course content. Was easy to do well in class as I went to most of the lectures.
I had to drop this class because of this prof. The content itself is interesting, but Preyde is so resistant to questions and feedback that it was damaging to my learning. She is a nice person, but I was very frustrated by her defensive response to student concerns. This class is tough but would be doable if not for her methodology.
She obviously spammed her RMP page with positive reviews (all from the same day) coincidentally right after an in-class discussion where students expressed frustration and uncertainty about her grading system.
