Dr. Andrews is a clear, engaging, and fun lecturer. She broke down tough material into digestible bits and did a great job of relating it all to the everyday world. I have no doubt she will be a favorite prof here for years. Tough class (it's econ): 3 midterms and a final. She really wants to see her students succeed and is always there to help.
Hardest class I've ever taken so far. She is a very effective teacher, but her tests are very challenging. Tests are very tricky and sometimes ridiculous. They are way harder than the homework. Avoid this teacher if you do not enjoy math.
Econ 410 with Sheran-Andrews was okay. She's decent at explaining material and her exams aren't impossible, but I wouldn't take a class with her again. Her office hours are very unhelpful and she doesn't provide much individual feedback. I wouldn't recommend her, but it's not the end of the world if you end up in her class.
Dr. Sheran-Andrews is one of the best professors I've ever had. She makes what could be dry material interesting and is always willing to explain a concept further if it doesn't make sense. Lectures are interesting and crystal clear. Tests are tough but not impossible. She's also really funny! Take her class and you won't regret it!
This is one of my favorite classes I've taken because the professor is great at teaching. Every word she says is important, so pay attention in class. She's strict and intimidating, but gives you the tools to be successful. She is very knowledgable and is great at breaking down concepts. The exams and homework are tough, but I've learned so much!
Excellent teacher. Knows her stuff and cares about it, along with her students. But beware: if econ does not come naturally to you, you will have to work. A lot. Multiple choice questions are hard and account for half of each test (missing two brings you down a full letter grade). But overall she's an effective teacher despite harsh grading.
Dr. Sheran-Andrews is extremely organized and passionate about Economics. She makes the class more difficult than it needs to be (the homeworks) but rewards you later with relatively easy tests and midterms. The recitations are optional and helpful about 50% of the time. The Besanko problems are very helpful for the homeworks and the tests.
MSA is by far my favorite professor this semester. Her lectures are extremely engaging and she very clearly shows that she wants us to learn the material. The homework/midterms are tough because of the format (10 MC + long form), but I feel that I have learned a lot from her class, beyond just memorization and regurgitation, but actual application.
Nice person, not the best teacher
Great Professor. Does a good job explaining material that can get very confusing very fast. Pay attention in class and make sure you understand things conceptually, not just on the surface. The tests are pretty short so each problem ways a lot which was kind of intimidating.
Great Professor. Helps you understand the material.
Great teacher and definitely passionate about economics. Class is pretty challenging and so consistently practicing the material, going to office hours, and seeking out help when needed is the way to go.
Michelle Sheran-Andrews really cares about her students. When she gets feedback, she really takes it into consideration and she really wants her students to do well. The material is tough but if you do the Besanko problems and the homework problems as practice then the tests won't trip you up.
Prof. Sheran-Andrews was very good. She is clearly passionate about the material and gives good lectures. The midterms are pretty difficult, especially due to time, so it is important to know the material inside and out. The best way to do this is to work the homework problems (from current and previous semesters) ad nauseum. Final was much easier.
Tough class, no way around it. Put in the time and you'll be ok. 6 homeworks, 1 will be dropped. 2 midterms and a final.
The class has three parts: Consumer Theory, Firm Theory, and Market Organization. She is amazing at teaching consumer but speeds through firm, so it can be confusing. Overall, her lectures are clear and spell out what you need to know for the exams (so don't skip). Weekly homework (six total); they help prepare you for the exams.
This class was the bane of my existence while in it, and if economic theory doesn't come easily to you, or you got below a B in 101, my best advice is take with friends and ride the struggle bus together, and don't take a chance on any other class known to be time consuming like BUSI 101 or you'll hate every Sunday and Monday of that semester
MSA is a great professor, but class will make you work. Some tips: 1) Come to class- good way to learn concepts/poll everywhere questions in class count for grades. 2) Do hw diligently- actually learn concepts, not just answers. 3) Learn to do basic calculus quickly. 4) Prepare for exams by redoing hw problems over and over. 5) Go to help sessions
She is LITERALLY the most awesome professor I have ever met. Super passionate about economics, very easily approachable even though it's a huge class. Very well organized courses, even though the class is slightly hard and you will have to work for it. I definitely think this was my favorite class at Carolina.
MSA is an awesome professor and actually cares about her students. If you go to her office hours she will get to know you and start engaging with you one-on-one despite the enormous size of the class. Econ 410 is tough and there's no way around it, but if you put in the time it's definitely manageable.
It shows when professors are really focused on teaching & not just their own research, and MSA is the perfect example. Everything she does is so carefully thought through to keep students accountable while also encouraging maximum learning. If you take advantage of the resources she provides, you will do well AND you'll learn a lot about micro!
Homeworks and tests are difficult so study groups will be your bestfriends. Super math oriented so if calc is your thing you probably won't have a tough time. Lot's of material, but an A is very attainable if you work for it.
Sheran-Andrews is a great professor who really cares about the subject and takes time to make sure everyone in the class understands the material. All though the class is difficult, put in the work for the homework and go to the help sessions and you will do well! I would definitely recommend this class!!
Extremely difficult class. I don't blame the prof as much as the course itself. The exam averages are in the mid 70's and you'll definitely have to put in a lot of time to study. Exams are most of your grade and HW/polls make up almost none of it. It isn't enough to know the material, you have to be able to solve questions quickly.
Sheran-Andrews is a solid choice for Econ 410. This class is really difficult. So far the worst grade I've got in college, but Sheran-Andrews does a decent job of getting the material across. I wouldn't recommend copying too many of the homework assignments, there's about one a week. They'll help on the 2 midterms and final.
Econ 410 is a hard class, with that being said, Dr. Sheran-Andrews does an amazing job at teaching this course. She's very accessible outside of class and her office hours/15 minute appointments are extremely helpful. The textbook (WHICH YOU CAN FIND ONLINE) was not that great, I would focus on HW and Besanko problems.
MSA is the best professor I've had at UNC. She is so nice and such a great instructor. Bottom line-- this is a math class. If you're good at math, you'll be just fine. If not, you're going to need to put in lots of time studying. Test problems very similar to weekly HW assignments. Graded polls in class, and optional TA recitations.
I really liked MSA and I dont think this class was too hard. It's easy to mess up on tests though, and look out because some people really struggle. I messed up on the final so study a bunch for that
I love MSA- By far the best professor I've had at UNC! This class is definitely tough, but she does a great job of explaining things in lecture, providing supplemental resources and practice problems, and being accessible outside of class. If you have a solid foundation in math, engage in class, and do the assignments you can do well in this class.
MSA knows her stuff and is a good communicator. However, where she falls short is the fact that you could rewrite Dante's Inferno with her playing the role of Lucifer and the story wouldn't change. Her tests are made to trick you (yet aren't too difficult) and she is mostly mean-spirited. She gets a 5 for being good, but that doesnt mean I like her
Michelle-Sheran Andrews really cares about her students and is so kind at office hours. Her class is obviously inherently hard, however she goes out of her way to provide extra resources and help for her students. Doing homeworks over and over and over again is the only way to continually nail down the material and hopefully recognize patterns.
This class is perhaps the only fair class I've ever taken. She's clear with everything she does, and her lectures explain things extremely well to her students. She'll try to explain things in different ways if you don't understand. Her tests are exactly the same style as her homework, so if you practice homework problems you'll be fine.
Class is extremely hard. does not spend enough time going over who to do problems in class. be prepared to each yourself all the material
Such a rough class but MSA is a really good professor. Meet with her out of class - shes nice and she seems to care about her students. Shes SUPER fair (but also SUPER tough). I would definitely agree that this is very math based. She does a great job of answering questions and using lecture time to do questions. Interesting class too but TOUGH!
410 is notoriously tough. No getting around it. But MSA is the best possible prof for it. TONS of extra material: practice Qs, outlines, study guides, (actually good) PP's, exam-relevant HW . PLUS: recitations, 3x/week help sessions, genius-level office hrs. MSA takes pedagogy seriously. Use her resources or don't whine about the class!
MSA has been the best teacher that I have had since I began my education at UNC. She is by no means an easy teacher, but she provides you with all the material necessary for you to succeed in her class. You get out of this class what you put into it. She is always available for office hours and super helpful.
MSA really cares about her students and tries to make the class as understandable as possible. Do all of the practice problems, and skip on the textbook!
Sheran-Andrews started the semester off with a great start by showing all the resources available and laid the class out really well. However, as the semester continues, the class slowly gets more confusing in terms of what the reacher expects from you on tests. Take advantage of office hours and keep up with the material in order to succeed.
Sheran-Andrews is very fair and straight-forward with her grading criteria but I didn't like her teaching style. She's very heavy on memorization (though she constantly claims otherwise) and often covers concepts in a convoluted way. Class is somewhat easy if you have a good grip on basic economic principles and calculus but very hard if not.
Not the best teacher for getting some subjects across, but will answer any questions she is asked so blame that on the students who obviously arent ready for the class. Huge class sizes and fast paced. Very fair and open to communication though. She tries hard and I loved her class.
Dr. Andrews put together the best organized class I've ever taken. She posts an abundance of resources online that are essential to doing well in the class, and reading the textbook is helpful for consolidating understanding of material. If you work hard and are diligent, you will do well.
MSA gives you everything you need to succeed in her class, it's just a matter of you using those resources. No need for the textbook, do the practice problems in advance so you have time to ask questions in office hours &look at help sheets! She is a great professor that truly cares for you to do well and wants to know how she can improve as well.
Don't buy the textbook - never opened it once. Midterms are exactly like homework and homework practice problems. Study those problems and hw until you understand everything and you will do fine on the midterms. Final is cumulative multiple choice. The difficulty is in how much material is covered and keeping up with all of it. MSA is kind though.
I didn't think the material was fundamentally challenging, there's just a lot of it to keep up with. Tests and homework seemed like they were designed to trick you on certain questions, but overall this is a very doable/fair class. Just read her online materials religiously and you'll be fine. No need for the textbook
he key to a good grade in this class - do the practice problems and do the homeworks over again to prep for the test. On top of being a phenomenal teacher, she gives you the resources you need to succeed. If you keep up with the workload throughout the semester, there's no reason you shouldn't make an A. Better than Econ 101 by a longshot.
MSA is probably the single best professor I've ever had. She explained concepts super well and provided us with practice problems and 'help sheets' that were extremely useful. The exams were the same difficulty, maybe even a little easier, than the homeworks. It's very possible to succeed if you put effort in, and you'll learn a ton!
she is absolutely fabulous. tests are incredibly hard though so beware. as long as you study hard and try your best you should be fine.
MSA is one of the best professors at UNC. You'll definitely need to do the hw and keep up with the material to do well in the class, but it's not impossible. Midterms aren't difficult but they are short so each question is worth a lot of points. Utilize the help sheets, extra practice problems, and office hours. Study for final well in advance.
MSA is the best! She is super kind to her students, and her lectures are clear, engaging, and insightful. She is really good at breaking things down and allowing students to understand real-world applications. Office hours are also really helpful! Just an incredible person and professor.
ECON410 is not easy. You have to work hard to get good grades. It is possible and with her help it's more than doable. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. She is so helpful and will work through any problem you don't understand. She remembers your name and believe me the difference between my first midterm and the midterm after I talked to her was significant.
I think MSA is a bit overrated. Her lectures are okay, but not amazing or particularly engaging. Main issue is the exams are so short. A plus is that the exams are in the exact format of the homeworks, but a bit easier.
Despite receiving a poor grade in the course, I recognize that MSA is an excellent lecturer and empathetic person. Kindhearted, helpful, and knowledgeable on the course material, Professor Sheran-Andrews does an excellent job of teaching microeconomic theory
I love love love MSA! We often joke that she is too nice to be an ECON prof at UNC. The material is challenging, but MSA made it so easy and understandable. Before the tests, do the homework and practice problems again, and you should be fine!
MSA is the best. Homework is easy to do with the help sheets. Midterms are exactly as the homework, just beware of the time constraint. I would take another class with her without a doubt just to be her student again.
MSA gives you all the tools to succeed along with clear grading expectations. However, when you take this course, know yourself. If you are good at calc and can easily understand economic concepts, you will excel. If you struggle with derivatives, good study habits, etc..., this class will be hard, and you will have to put in extra work.
Overall, this class was difficult but not impossible. I'm no math genius but I was able to understand most of the content if I studied well. My advice would be to do problem sets as soon as you can instead of waiting. Also, I thought there was not enough time for the midterms. I did better on the final than any of them because I had more time.
I loved MSA! She is one of the best professors at UNC. She knows the material and does a good job at explaining it. I don't think the material is difficult, but I thought the midterms were a bit tough because of time. Final is easier because you have 3 hours. If I prepared more ahead of time, I would've gotten an A in the course. MSA is the best.
MSA is awesome. She truly wants her students to succeed and gives them the resources to do so. The class is difficult at times, but if you attend lectures and put in the hours for all problem sets and other practice you should be find. Use the ECON AID CENTER! Take advantage of the resources available to you, and it will certainly help you.
Best Econ professor ever. She clearly knows what she is talking about, she knows how to let students understand her. I am planning to take every class she teaches.
MSA is easily the best professor I have ever had during my time at Carolina. If you get the chance to take 415 with her, you won't regret it. Taking a small class with her has been amazing, she really makes an effort to get to know you individually. The class itself was difficult but she really wants all her students to succeed!
If you want a good grade in this class, be sure to put in the work needed! MSA is a wonderful professor and her lectures are clear and concise. Her exams are fair as well, final is simple if you know your material. Just do the homeworks and you will be fine!
MSA is a sweet person and great lecturer, literally the best economics teacher I've had. She provides a lot of resources to her students which makes the fairly difficult content digestible. Attend class, do the practice problems, look at the help sheets, and go to the ECON Aid Center if you need help and you'll probably do well.
ECON410 is possibly one of the worst classes at UNC, but MSA makes it bearable. Her lectures are all great and the tests are fair as long as you do the homework. I would recommend that you print out the lecture notes online to follow along with in class. MSA has a radiant personality and loves her students/the class. Great ECON professor to have.
Very nice teacher and wants you to do good. You must be willing to work really hard to succeed in this class or you just will not pass. The resources are there to help you succeed. I would not recommend getting the book for the class. Graded off few things as well, 10 Homeworks and 4 tests. Also, recitation is not required which is the best part.
MSA is the best teacher I've had so far at UNC. If you're confused about anything in the course, definitely go to office hours. Get started on homework and study for tests as early as possible. If you understand the homeworks and practice problems, you should be fine on the tests. She is a very fair teacher and doesn't try to trick students.
MSA is a great communicator who comes across as very caring. However, the homework and tests can be especially tricky. Make sure you really understand the first few units WELL, because its extremely difficult to get caught back up later on. I barely scraped by in this class because I didnt work hard enough at the beginning, so stay on top of it.
Abandon All Hope, Ye Who Enter Here
So far, MSA is my favorite professor. Econ 410 is given a really bad reputation by advisors. Good news, they are wrong. Her grading is clear, she is very helpful, and gives the all the tips she can think of so you can get an A. If you listen to half of them, and do the work, you will do great.
MSA is an OUTSTANDING professor! Needless to say this class was very difficult and thankfully I was able to take it pass/fail and still receive credit. I would recommend MSA as your professor if you're needing to take Econ 410. Just be prepared to work!
MSA is absolutely phenomenal and one of the best professors at UNC. She's so kind and caring and always willing to work with you as long as you put in the effort. Make sure you understand the homework problems and do the practice problems and you're golden for all of her exams. They're pretty straightforward once you understand the formulas.
I'll give her 5 stars because shes a good professor, but I do not like her. She is very strict. Anyway, for spring 2020, 43% of the class made an A.
MSA is very straightforward in the things you need to do well in her class. There are no secrets. You WILL have to grind for exams to do well in them, and go through all the practice problems and the homework questions to give yourself a solid chance. Her teaching is flawless and she is the best professor I have had at Carolina. It's 100% up to you
What you see is what you get. You do the work you get the grade. Exams are difficult but fair. If you study the material you will do well, and MSA will certainly help you if you need it.
I was nervous about taking econ410, but MSA proved me wrong. This was overall my easiest A so far, and she structures the class so it is like that. I barely went to class, but used resources she provided to learn and study and they proved effective. The exams are essentially the HW questions, just slightly different. It is clear what to expect.
MSA was a great professor and is extremely clear in her teaching of Econ410. Go to class, utilize the Econ Aid center, and study the practice problems and you can get an A in this class. Econ 410 is a class that is not necessarily hard but can be very confusing, and MSA will guide you through this confusion if you put in the time. Great professor.
MSA is truly the best professor that I've had in my time at UNC. Econ 410 is a difficult class, but if you put in the time it takes to learn the material then you can do very well in this class. Be sure to go to office hours/EconAid center in the days before homework is due though! (tests come from hw problems!)
Econ 410 is not an easy class, but can be made so much easier because of how good of a teacher MSA is and more importantly, how many resources she gives to you. If you just study the practice problems and homeworks before her tests, they are very fair and you'll do very well.
It may seem daunting but she is truly an amazing professor and don't you dare take this with anyone else. She KNOWS HER STUFF and is very accommodating. Study a lot for the tests, but it's not impossible. It's very repetitive material as well so once you learn the first unit, that's the main hurdle, it's smooth sailing really. LOVE HER.
An amazing professor that clearly cares about her students. If you've done well in Math/Chem/Comp classes, then 410 is actually really easy in comparison. However, anyone can do well if they put the appropriate level of effort forward. Even if you're not a STEM person, just pay attention to MSA's awesome teaching and you will be more than fine!
MSA was the best ECON professor I have had at UNC. She is not only a great person but an even better teacher. The class is hard, but she gives you so many resources and so much attention that the class is manageable and it is completely possible to get an A. MSA is the only professor anyone should take 410 with. She is the absolute best!
I spent 6-7 hours per day working on this class during summer because of how much work it was, but having MSA definitely eased the pain. She was always accessible via email and held office hours every day, which were basically small group Q&A sessions and they helped a ton. She puts up a ton of resources and keys and adapted to online really well.
MSA is a great lecturer and communicator. However, the material of this course is naturally hard to begin with, and I don't think the structure of this class made it any simpler to comprehend. With that said, she's very likeable and accessible, and will do her best to answer any questions you may have. I'd recommend her for 410, but get ready.
I took her for 410 and liked her enough to take 415 with her. I would say it's about as challenging as 410, but if I had to pick, I'd say 415 is a little bit easier. MSA is probably my favorite professor at UNC, but certainly my favorite in the Econ department. If 410 wasn't too bad for you, I'd recommend taking 415 with her. It's less math-heavy.
MSA is a fantastic professor. I had heard that ECON 410 was an awful course but she delivered it in a way that made the class a breeze. I found it really easy to ask her questions both in class and her lecture videos were concise and helpful. There is a fair bit of math-intensive work in the class but it really prepares you for the exams
ECON410 is hard but Dr. MSA made it enjoyable even online. She's nice, helpful, funny, and is willing to help us to understand difficult concepts during class and office hours. Her class is flipped but she always explains topics we learned from pre-class videos in class to ensure we fully understood it before moving on. She's always happy to help!
Undeniably the best professor I've had at UNC. If you enjoyed 410 and think highly of MSA this is a must-take. She teaches it each fall and the material is far easier than 410 and is applicable to real life. Simply fascinating if you love econ. Best professor in the UNC system in my mind.
Really sweet and funny. 3 midterms but u can drop 1. Grind before the exams and you'll be fine. Exams are very similar to problem sets and practice problems so do those over and over again. Polls during class for attendance. Calculus is all partial derivatives so not too complex. A lot of simplifying. Lowkey easier than ECON101.
MSA is an amazing teacher especially for econ410. She goes beyond her limits to accommodate every student. Her lectures are interesting and she solves all your doubts in the class. There are 3 midterms (she chooses best 2) and a final. Recitation and participation also count towards your final grade. Highly recommend yall to take MSA.
Dr. Sheran-Andrews is very kind, funny, and down-to-earth. Her class, while interesting, is difficult due to the heavy-weighted tests that aren't easy. However, overall, these tests are based heavily on the homework, classwork, and class problem sets also assigned. Participation is for a grade. Overall, she definitely cares about your learning.
MSA is easily one of the best professors I have had at UNC. The material that ECON 410 consists of can sometimes be challenging, but MSA works overtime to ensure that she makes it as easy to understand as possible. She supplies an amazing amount of material to ensure you grasp the class concepts and cares very much about her students' well-being.
A kind person and great at teaching. My only concern is with the tests she gives. Not nearly enough time to complete them in their entirety and extremely difficult.
Im a first-year, and if every professor I have for the rest of my time here was like her, I would be living in a dream. I never really paid too much attention in lectures, but most of the time you spend actually learning the material is before/after class time. 410 is not easy course material, but MSA does a great job. Would recommend.
So difficult, shes a very good professor, but I feel really stupid in the class. Ive got a 3.7 GPA, and this was the first class ive felt like a complete idiot in.
WHAT AN AMAZING PROFESSOR!!!!!! I have soo much respect for her! She works over time to make sure students understand the material. The class is not that difficult. The material is very doable and MSA does a great job taking complicated topics and really simplifying them. Its not that bad!!! Arguably the best Professor I ever had PERIODT.
TAKE MSA FOR 410! Like any higher level ECON class, this isn't going to be an easy A, but MSA cares about her students and will do everything she can to help you succeed. Listens to feedback and adjusts exams accordingly. Mandatory attendance, but you want to be in class anyway since some exam Q's are taken from lectures. Definitely read the book!
MSA was THE BEST professor I had as a 1st year! MUST TAKE! She is so sweet & kind, willing to understand as us students via "brags and drags" and plenty of office hours and resources like help sheets (USE THEM!). Class is not too hard but a GRIND! w/ study buddies with a small group to get the A! Content is great/interesting! 100% REC & RESPECTED!
She is super nice, makes the material as simple as possible (it's def not an easy A), and overall great prof. However, midterms and finals are graded harshly. It is kind of necessary to really understand every aspect of the material to make a decent grade. Also I didn't use the textbook at all so make sure you need it before you buy.
This rating is more of a reflection on 410 than MSA. I thought she was a pretty good professor and I'm pretty sure there aren't any better options. There are a few assignments each week but midterms and the final determine 80% of your grade. ECON 410 is the hardest business pre-requisite, don't let anyone say different. Your TA matters a lot.
MSA is amazing! Great choice for ECON410. Midterms will be graded leniently/harshly depending on TA but you can submit regrade requests. 3 midterms but she drops the lowest 1. Midterms are only difficult due to the time limit. Overall, a good class.
MSA is one of the best professors I've had at Carolina. The material is difficult and does take a good amount of effort to learn; however, MSA does a great job teaching in a way that makes the content easier to understand. Additionally, she is always willing to stay after class and answer questions. Highly Recommended for ECON 410.
I am currently taking Econ 410 with MSA, and honestly the best teacher I have had in a WHILE. The class itself can be very complex but I promise if you ask questions you will understand and pass the class. MSA as a professor rejuvenated my love for Econ and is probably one of the best professors at Chapel, she is very sympathetic and caring.
This was a teaching course. The professor is an inspiration, I'd take any course she teaches.
MSA has an incredibly structured, organized course. She is so knowledgeable about micro and has taught this class forever. Be prepared to do a lot of calc! There are so many resources if you need help however. You'll never run out of practice problems and there are so many people that can answer any questions you have. She's great at what she does.
MSA is the best! We watch videos before class that are short and very clear. Then in class we mostly do practice problems. MSA does a really good job of building content so learning comes easily. The Sakai page and Syllabus are really clear. The tests are hard but you are given a lot of study resources so you are well prepared.
MSA is a lovely professor and person. I have had the privilege of developing a relationship with her in 410 and outside of lectures. She loves teaching micro, and she is extremely open to helping students. She gives you all the resources you need, and overall, she is wonderful to talk to about econ and life outside class.
From my experience, MSA makes this class more challenging than it needs to be. The material is arranged in an intentionally confusing manner. Rather than presenting steps to solve the toughest problems, it is on the student and whatever groups they work with to figure them out.
ECON 410 is definitely a hard class but MSA is the best there is. You definitely need to put the work in to do well but she really cares about all her students and there are so many resources to help you understand the material. If you have to take 410 100% take it with MSA
An extremely difficult class. Would not recommend. The other prof had open note/take home exams.
I'm very confused why people say she's a good professor. Absolute worst I've ever had. On day 1, she said "You will never apply anything from this class to the real world." The structure of the course makes it nearly impossible to do well. She's also not accommodating. I had to study for 3-4 hours a day for 14 days to do well on the final.
MSA is truly a gem, but the exams are considerably more difficult than you would think. The only issue is that there is not a lot of time to really process a question on the exam since its only 50 minutes, but she is really generous on giving bonus points on the exams and is truly an amazing lecturer.
MSA could be a case study in why bad RMP reviews should be taken with a grain of salt... Econ 410 IS an extremely difficult course, with frustrating content and tests. However, MSA gives her students every opportunity to succeed. I got off to a rough start but recovered well thanks to MSA's help and grading policies. Honestly learned a lot.
This class is VERY hard (especially if you're not strong in math/calc). I have never worked harder in a class, yet done so poorly. MSA's exams are so challenging I had to plan a backup major at one point. On a positive note, even though she had 500 students, she met with me 1:1 after doing poorly on a test to help me review study strategies.
MSA made me want to switch to an economics major after taking her course just from her kindness and obvious love she has for teaching and economics. Initially, the class will be very overwhelming (math prerequisite knowledge, long syllabus, 12-16 hours of recommended studying/week). Once you settle in, though, it is very doable. Amazing professor!
MSA is an amazing teacher and truly cares about her students. I found this class to be much easier than 101. When studying for tests, do the practice problems & HW's as many times as it takes to understand the material (going back over videos didn't help me). I did average on the first two midterms but when I realized how to study, killed the class
During an incredibly difficult semester for UNC students, it was nice to know that we had a professor who cared for us in MSA. Many professors of large classes in popular majors can be cold towards their students, but this was not the case. MSA would stop lectures to make jokes when students seemed down, and she was always willing to help.
I wish I could've given her a 0/5. Flipped classroom & in-class examples were extremely easier than the homework&exams. no longer offering an index card so the exams will become extremely harder. When the tragedies occurred on campus she failed to accommodate the students who felt they needed to go home and refused to make it online.
MSA is awesome, she does everything in her power to help you succeed, and she is great at explaining everything. If you come in with knowing how to take a partial derivative and are good at math, this class is pretty easy (and super fun if you love derivatives). The ULA office hours are super helpful as well.
Lectures weren't boring & she was always in a great mood. Once you learn how to study for this class it gets easy. Only downside is that she is very against giving extra credit. Rewatch lesson videos before exams and do all practice problems! Practice problems are very similar to the exams.
ECON410 is a very difficult class, and that is because the material is very dense. Her homework assignments really do make you think, but they help on the exams. Exams are definitely not easy and you need good prior math skills like derivatives to succeed. She is a nice professor but with a big classroom of 500 kids, most due dates are firm.
MSA is a nice person and is also a great instructor. She was very considerate towards her students during tough times. The only criticism I have of her is that she could've provided more practice resources for her exams, which were difficult and a big part of your grade.
MSA is amazing, extremely accommodating by allowing notecards during the exam to transition into in-person testing and reweighting midterms. She provides all of the resources you need to succeed, do the practice problems, homework to prepare for the exams. It does require lots of calculus, partial derivatives. She also provided zooms as an option.
MSA is an absolute gem, she's a super dedicated professor. The class is more on the difficult side in terms of the material, but if you take the time to understand the material, the class isn't too bad. I would recommend taking the class with people you know and staying on top of the material. If you fall behind, it is really difficult to catch up.
It's not an easy class because of the course content but she is an amazing professor. Pay attention in class and do all the practice problems and it is manageable to get an A, but you will have to work for it.
LOVE MSA! After doing well in 410, took her Seminar class for ULAs. This is where you see her learning method and pedagogy SHINE. Her methods to make us better teachers combined with AWESOME TA MEGAN and good "psychology"-like readings so that we can all be better ULAS to assist in ECON, in addition to LEARNING HOW TO LEARN and be better students.
Econ 410 is a difficult class no question, but MSA does her best to help you succeed. If you do the practice problems and take the homework seriously, getting an A is manageable. She is very kind and caring and will work with you to help you understand the material and your mistakes.
Econ 410 was the hardest class I've ever taken. That said, if you must take it, do it with MSA. The material, tests, and homework are incredibly difficult. Personally, I worked hard but it was hard for me to connect topics critically, other students did well though. MSA did everything she could to help us despite that, she's brilliant and caring.
I LOVED MSA!! She was incredibly fair. If you do the work consistently and ask for help (especially at ECON Aid Center), you will do well.
This class is extremely difficult if you do not have a very solid calculus background. It is extremely easy to get lost in this class if you do not ask for help early. MSA is very very organized and tries her best to help students out. However, this is one of the hardest classes I've taken at UNC. She is a gem, the class is hell.
Very challenging course but she did her absolute best in making everything easier.
People who criticize MSA are often at fault themselves. Her lectures are clear, and she provides the most resources to help out of any professor I've had. The material is very straightforward and just takes practice. If you have good math skills and understand the content, the tests are definitely doable, and the questions are very fair.
MSA is great with lectures and answering questions in class. She really wants us to do well and provides countless resources for reviews and practice problems for the exams. The class is not easy and does take a lot of studying, but if you stay on top of your work, you can be successful.
MSA truly is an amazing teacher and cares about her students. The students who criticize her often don't put in the time outside of class to understand the subject matter themselves. ECON 410 is a hard class, but she is constantly available for questions and help, as are the ULAs. Best professor I've had at UNC--take MSA for any Econ class you can!
MSA is the best teacher I have had at UNC by far. She is very clear about what is on exams & what you need to know. exams are fair & similar to homework in content and difficulty. provides so many helpful resources and office hours. You can really tell she cares about her students and their learning, she is passionate about teaching and it shows.
MSA is an amazing professor! I 100% recommend her to anyone taking ECON 410 or an econ class! She really cares about her students and was really accommodating to all of us so we could succeed in the class. She also provided lots of resources and practice problems that were very helpful for exam studying!
This professor the GOAT. Her resources are abundant and clearly organized on her sakai site. The class contains difficult material but she does give so many ways to learn it that you will do well if you put in effort.
The class is difficult just because of the amount of content. MSA prepares you extremely well for every exam, giving you more than enough resources to get an A on every assessment. From practice problems to office hours & Piazza, any question you have will be answered within 24 hours. Amazing professor despite having to teach such difficult content
I wouldn't hesitate to give MSA a 5 if it weren't for the tight time constraints on midterms. The exams were long and the 50 min time limit resulted in people rushing over things and making small mistakes; I made mostly average scores on the midterms but killed the final since there was significantly more time. Otherwise, she's a fantastic teacher
The course material is difficult, but MSA provides so many resources and practice problems that if you put in the work you'll be fine. Tests are exactly like homeworks and practice problems so once again, just don't put the class off and do your work and it's not that bad. MSA herself is a gem, so kind and always willing to help out.
MSA is awesome! She really cares about her students and gives you a lot of resources to do well. Beware though, 410 is super hard and you have to dedicate a lot of time to this class to do well. If you can do that, take 410 another semester because you can't do well by cramming.
MSA is a great professor. Her lectures are engaging and funny and she ties in current events. The math wasn't too bad for me, with the hardest being simple partial derivatives (that she teaches if you haven't taken calc 3). She drops the lowest hw or 2 and the lowest midterm. Attending recitations is optional but can help if you need the practice.
Exams are fairly difficult, but MSA gives you all the resources to comprehensively prepare for them. Seriously... I've never experienced a more organized professor in my academic career. For every single chapter, MSA provides videos, help sheets, guided worksheets, a powerpoint, and close to 50 practice problems. Also, she drops the lowest midterm!
Her lectures are engaging and she provides resources. Thats where the positives end. She cannot be reasoned with when it comes to grading and provides practice questions she says are similar to the exams and then proceeds to make the exams completely different while claiming, "trust me, i'm not trying to trick you." She always has an attitude.
This is a difficult class, but MSA provides soo many resources to help you learn the material and prepare for exams. She also drops the lowest midterm and 2 lowest homework grades. The lectures were mainly practice problems but she explained them very in-depth which was very helpful, and she also answered every question people asked in class.
MSA is an absolute gem of UNC! She is accessible outside of class, offers countless resources to succeed, explains things thoroughly, and takes time out of class to address students' (often unnecessary) concerns after exams. 410 is a hard class, but it's totally doable if you do the work. I had a 94 until the final, but it was my fault. Take MSA!
MSA is easily the best choice for ECON 410. A lot of people hate because it's naturally a hard class, but she puts in a lot of effort outside the classroom and provides you with resources to succeed. She also drops one of three midterms and two of nine homeworks. Recitations not mandatory but helpful. Would take again!
Super kind and super helpful. ECON 410 is naturally a tough course, but MSA does everything she can to ensure everyone succeeds. Using your LAs and online resources are key to getting a good grade.
MSA is a literal goddess. She is engaging and kind and organized. Econ410 is a hard class, but she explains the concepts well and is very generous with partial credit on exams. It is obvious that MSA truly cares about her students. I would give my left kidney and my appendix to have MSA teach me all the Econ courses I need for graduation.
A very hard course. She gives you everything you need to succeed but do not get behind. I would advise doing literally every practice problem she gives to study. Econ is strange...
Super super dense class but do the practice problems a TON and it'll help. Shes very nice and caring but this class is tough. Watch lectures again if confused about conceptual stuff.
MSA is the best choice for 410. Definitely the hardest class I've taken at UNC, but if you put in the work you can do decently. I wasn't the best at math but there's SO many resources (aid center, help sessions) you can use. Only thing is that they're usually really crowded during midterms szn. The exams are super hard tho but grading is fair.
Econ 410 is a very difficult class but MSA gives you plenty of resources to be successful if you put the work in. I really wound up enjoying the class as time went on and would 100% recommend taking 410 with her.
410 is definitely doable and you are given all the resources you need to succeed. If you haven't taken calc in a while, you'll struggle at first but you'll catch on as you do practice problems. Don't buy the textbook, you won't need it. Also, MSA is an amazing person and teacher. Love her and honestly love 410, it's not that bad if you put in work!
MSA is the person to take for Econ, it is a challenging class, but she makes it straightforward and genuinely wants success for her students.
MSA is the professor to take for 410. Do not try to take someone else because it is a challenging class and MSA is the best one at making the information clear and understandable. Wants each student to succeed but will not give any particular student extra advantages over others.
MSA is my absolute favorite professor at UNC. She has so many resources available to help you succeed and explains things very clearly. Her lesson videos are great and while she is not willing to bend deadlines, she has enough built in drops in the syllabus that you will be fine.
Great professor that provides numerous resources, practice problems, and help sessions to help students succeed. Content is challenging, but exams are fair and not designed to trick you. Her lectures are very engaging and help you master the material. I definitely recommend taking ECON 410 with MSA!
ECON410 is a difficult course but MSA offers a lot of resources, is very organized, and is genuinely good at teaching. As long as you stay on top of your stuff in this class and put in effort to understand the material as you go, you'll be fine.
If you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of having to take ECON410, you must choose MSA. She is the best at getting you through this weed-out class. She is highly organized and provides you with every resource you could possibly need. Make sure to attend ALL lectures and you'll be fine.
Hands down the best professor at UNC. Passionate, caring and extremely knowledgable. I fought tooth and nail to get into her summer class and did not regret it.
Humble and kind energy in the classroom. Expectations are clear and concise. Resources are organized and bountiful. She did her part, the course is on you.
MSA was my favorite professor at Carolina. She was fair, encouraging, and willing to spend time out of class helping students understand the material. I got a C+ in her class (totally fair), so be ready to study. Her 410 class was tough, but I enjoyed learning from her so much I took another class with her - would do it again.
Dropping the lowest quiz grade???? Praise the goddess that is MSA.
MSA is the best teacher you will ever have. Pre-class assignments and problem sets are short, but useful. She creates study guides for every quiz that are super helpful for studying. Very responsive to students ideas and questions, via campuswire, email, and office hours.
MSA is one of the best econ lecturer I ever had. She is funny and obviously passionate about what she teaches. She has very clear grading criteria and wants you to succeed. If you just keep up with her class, attend lectures, do the homework, and use the resources she gives you, you will get an A. I was sick for three weeks so I fell behind.
MSA is a true gift to the ECON department. After having her for both 410 & 415, she is my favorite professor by a mile. She is kind and takes time to get to know her students individually. For a professor to teach such difficult classes and consistently be rated amongst the highest, you know she is worth it! When I think UNC, I also think MSA!
This is my second class with MSA and she's an amazing professor (probably one of the best in the department). The content is an extension of 410 so a lot of the lectures are familiar which is nice. She was really accessible outside of class and a 10/10 class!
MSA once again is unmatched in her ability to teach complex concepts in a clear, concise way. Her teaching style and quizzes were set up well for us to succeed in the class. Overall, relatively easy class but very enjoyable and interesting.
MSA is the absolute best. She is super sweet and cares so much about each student. She's amazing at explaining concepts in a way that makes sense. She also told so many funny stories in class that related to the material which made it memorable. I never struggled to pay attention during her lectures because they were so interesting.
I wish that there was a way to rate her as more than a 5. MSA is the sole reason that I am interested in economics now. She's worth the wait to take her if she isn't teaching 410 at the moment. The only reason that I rate her as a 3 in difficulty is just because the material is more difficult than average.
She is an amazing professor, but the course might be one of the hardest at UNC. Take 410 with her if you need it, but prepare to lock in like never before.
She is the best professor at UNC. This class wasn't the hardest but definitely not easy, however she is super accessible and gives tons of resources. Study hard, do the practice problems and an A is definitely attainable
MSA made ECON410 so much easier than I thought it would be. She's a great lecturer and truly cares about her students. The exams aren't too hard as long as you pay attention in class, watch the lecture videos, and study practice materials.
MSA is a fantastic professor and if you have to take this class at all, take it with her. She provides so so so many resources, and those are the key to doing good in the class. Truly understand the content to a deep level, and know how to apply concepts in conjunction with when to use them! Exams are SO fair & class felt easier than ECON 101 tbh.
MSA is easily the best prof I've ever had at UNC. If you do the pre-class videos and pay attention during lecture you will be fine. The midterms were not too bad, and I thought the final was a little easier. Your grade in this class will reflect how much work you put in. If you are willing to work, I would definitely recommend taking 410 with MSA.
MSA gave us many resources to succeed in this class including lecture videos, help sheets, etc. Exams and homeworks were somewhat difficult but the amount of practice and guidelines she gave make it possible to do well if you put effort. In general she and the TAs were very helpful as far as answering questions if there was confusion.
She really knows her stuff. Try to go to class as most of my notes are from class. I didn't really use the textbook at all. Everything builds off of each other so make sure to know the beginning units very well. I took this 2nd semester freshmen year and thought it was doable- used all the resources she gave. Def go to her help sessions with TAs.
GOAT status in the economics department. Networking with other students and engaging with genuinely enticing class content. No exams. Procrastinating the portfolio is not advisable, but you'll survive...probably. Best of luck to any future ULAs.
MSC is good at explaining concepts and providing resources. My complaint is that 78-83% of the grade comes from timed exercises and exams. Only 17-22% of grades will be determined by things that students can take their time on. This class feels like taking the ACT and is a neurotypical-focused class where testing alone judges your capability.
I took this course with MSA because of her reviews on here, but I strongly advise to not take this class with her. While there are a lot of resources available, they are not beneficial and are overwhelming. Her lectures are all over the place and have no structure. Everyone I know in this course with her is extremely confused.
I don't understand how her reviews are so high. Everyone I know in upper level econ courses says her class is taught very poorly for learning the basics that are needed later on. Do not take this class with her.
Do not take this class with her. Just had our first exam and she purposely tries to trick you. She is an awful teacher, I've had to teach myself everything on my own. Studied more than I ever have and still did bad on the exam.
MSA is the goat. Not only does she make 410 understandable, but it provides a great foundation for a lot of the stuff you use throughout the econ major. She's hilarious and charismatic too.
Class is not that bad you should be fine as long as you are decent at basic calc. Tests are actually way easier than she makes them seem. Like she will hype up how hard they are and say you will need to apply concepts in new ways we have not seen. This is not true, practice problems were for sure harder than exam.
You need to be good at calculus and algebra, I struggled at first and I'm pretty good at math. MSA is super nice and very passionate. She gives tons of resources/ practice problems, but the class structure is annoying. She expects a lot of time outside of class, which is fair but if you don't watch pre-class videos you will be lost during lectures.
MSA provides a lot of resources however the amount of resources she provides is overwhelming. In addition, I've found the pre-recorded lecture videos to be unhelpful as later on in the semester what she teaches in class doesn't align with the lecture video and it can be confusing. 75% of your grade is two midterms and final with no curve.
MSA is one of the best professors I have had at UNC. She's an incredibly good lecturer that makes difficult content easy to understand. She had pre-recorded videos and a lot of resources to help students. She's always available for questions and her tests are very fair. The exams are not easy, but if you pay attention and study, you will be fine.
ECON 410 is difficult, but MSA does a great job making the material make sense. Plenty of resources/practice problems to study for exams as well, which is nice. While attendance in lecture/recitation is technically mandatory, she offers an alternate grade scale that gives extra weight to tests to replace attendance grade. Overall great experience
One of the most organized professors I've had, and she seems passionate about what she's teaching! She provides a lot of resources to help out. This class required a lot of work, though, so be ready to put in the time. I just don't like how the midterms/final determine almost your entire grade.
GET READY TO MAKE THIS CLASS YOUR LIFE OTHERWISE YOU WILL HAVE TO RETAKE IT…this class will LITERALLY BECOME YOUR LIFE. IF YOU THOUGHT ECON101 WAS HARD GET READY FOR DOUBLE THE STUDYING AND DOUBLE THE STRESS. Make sure to STAY ON TOP OF HW/go to EconAid, if you check out for even a week you're SCREWED because new things build off previous concepts.
Nice professor and fair gradings. Materials are not hard if you are good at algebra and calculus. You only need to understand the concepts and apply mathematical way to solve problems. All 3 exams have an average of ~78% (she even curved the final exam by 3 points to make that). This semester 28% got an A and another 8% got an A-. MSA is the GOAT!
dare i say the best professor ever at UNC. extremely organized, very helpful in OH, basically gives you the answers to homeworks if you go. homeworks are super similar to exams, just practice those. so much practice probelms and there are review sessions every week if you need it. the best professor fr, so easy to interact with as well.
BEST PROFESSOR FOR ECON!!!
Best Econ professor! If you watch the pre-recorded class videos, pay attention during lecture, and study the lectures and practice problems before tests, you are guaranteed success. There are also a lot of resources outside class if needed.
MSA is great, easily one of the best professors at UNC. ECON 410 is on the difficult side. A is possible if you lock in and grind. Need to put in a decent amount of work outside of class.
MSA is awesome! So many resources to take advantage of if you are confused about a topic. Class is mainly practice, so watch videos to have a clear understanding of the topic. Exams can be tricky but if you can do the homework, you can do the exams. 410 is difficult, both conceptually and math but MSA is easily the best professor available for it.
MSA is awesome! The math itself isn't even that hard as long as you're familiar with basic calculus/derivatives. She provides so many resources to help you succeed and you learn mainly from practice especially the homeworks. There is a lot of content but as long as you stay on track and start studying for the tests early you'll be fine!
Very good professor and tests are very similar to homework and recitation. Lots of resources to get help outside of class. Just have the fundamentals from calc 1 down and your set.
In all honesty, she's a great professor, and it was a great class. She's a great lecturer who knows her stuff and is always organized. Calc-1-based econ, which I didn't have too strong of a base in. She made the class manageable and offered a ton of resources. The class itself is challenging, so be ready to put in the work.
Great professor worth waiting for the long waitlist. Really knows so well how to explain stuff clearly and concisely. Love the flipped class mode
MSA seemed to be a good teacher but the way she taught did not work for me and I really struggled in this class. Go to office hours, study hard, but she wasn't as great for my experience as people told me to expect.
Incredibly respected and organized professor. Clearly a ton of experience in instructing 410, and her online resources reflected that. Review the homeworks and do practice problems pre-exam. Review sessions were also very helpful. Exams are tough but fair.
I love MSA. Recommended to literally everyone that needs to take ECON 410. Honestly I didn't have McDonough for 101 so I felt like I barely learned anything about Econ but still just fine because of all the materials -- you just have to know calculus so review that if you don't. MSA is going to make an amazing grandmother one day
Mother. I wish she taught 101 I definitely would've actually absorbed the information more. Just do the work and don't take this class in general if you can't do calculus because that's on you. Everything else she helps you so much with
She's lowkey hilarious.
She has the magic of explaining complex stuff in the easiest way to understand. Very kind, interesting, approachable, and generous about grades. Exams are extremely similar to the homework. I personally feel the pace of the course is slowed by the class size (~200 people) and many polls during class (each could take up to 10-15 min of class time)
Econ 410 is not a breeze. Content picks up pretty quickly, math intensive (calc 1), etc. However, MSA made this class extremely feasible. She was always there to help before/after class and in office hours. 2 midterms, a final, and HW are pretty much your entire grade. A is def possible if you keep up w the course videos and ask questions!
MSA is an awesome instructor, as she was able to explain abstract concepts very clearly. As long as you strongly lock in September, you'll be fine the rest of the semester. Many resources are provided throughout the semester.
MSA is amazing! ECON410 is a heavy course, but she has an insane amount of resources. This class is also a flipped classroom (but I never watched the video and did fine, just gotta grind a lot later). Looking over 101 materials/taking it the previous semester can definitely be helpful. Grading is fair, though she doesn't curve or give extra credit.
MSA is hands-down one of the best professors I've had at UNC. I love her! Somehow, she is able to explain every single micro concept clearly and do it with patience and care. She is very generous with weighting your best exam heavier, dropping homework grades, etc. If you are going to take 410, take it with her!
I like everything about how MSA does ECON 410. She is warm and caring but commands the room and lectures with confidence. She provides a wealth of helpful resources and gives fair exams. If you can get the math down (hardest concepts are exponent rules and partial derivatives), then nothing is more difficult conceptually than the stuff from 101.
MSA is a great teacher. This class is not very hard if you are good at calculus and have prior exposure to a lot of the math beforehand. Very fair grader and wants students to suceed.
