two words: TAKE HER. she is probably the most organized, fair science professor ive had. class notes are beautiful and help insanely. her tests are FAIR (but orgo is difficult), and no surprises--tests u exaclty on what she told u to know (and she makes that very clear). amazing prof
You have to take Organic with Sulikowski! She is such an amazing professor, keeps everyone entertained for the entire class, and is extremely organized and patient. If you go to class there is no reason you shouldn't do well! TAKE HER!
Best science professor. Ever. Straightforward and engaging, finding a way to liven up even the dullest material with entertaining personal stories. Her xeroxed notes and wit make class worth attending, plus the tests and curve are very reasonable too.
A very good professor. very intertaining too.
awesome awesome awesome! michelle is an amazing professor, very helpful, has great notes that allow you to really focus on the important points in class. presentations keep things interesting and boost grades. go to office hours! def worth any pain or suffering assoc. with organic. fun professor!
Awesome professor, Michelle is very helpful inside or outside class, and she really cares about your understanding of orgo. Tests are kind hard, but if you actually do the HW, you should do fine. TAKE HER, definately, she's the best!
AMAZING TEACHER!!!! Her tests are pretty tough, but she really cares about teaching and tries her best to help you succeed. Plus, shes pretty funny in class and office hours. She makes herself really available. TAKE SULIKOWSKI!!!!
Wow, I wish I had taken her when everyone else did because she is aweful in CHEM 101A. She is disorganized, inarticulate, and fails to prepare you for the exams. I understand that this is the first time that she is teaching the class, but she needs to get her act together. The lab is bad and the class is terrible.
She is one of the best teachers I've had in college.
Wow. It is so bad, that you just shouldn't take it. No one deserves this kind of BS in an introductory / non Premed major Chemistry class.
She tried to appease people by making the second test really easy, but the class is not structured well for a non-major class, and the requirements for various major projects tend to be unclear. Wouldn't take this class. Lab component isn't horrible and the TA is great, but just how useful it is is questionable.
Spare yourself the headache and take any other lab science. 100% not worth it as a non major requirement. Also, ridiculous assignments like poster presentations and peer reviews make students unable to take the class seriously.
I agree with post below. Do not waste your time, credits, or money on this class. Too much busy work. I never knew what was going on with any of the assignments.
Terrible class. She is not helpful at all and does not go out of her way to help students like other professors do. The class was boring and we learned very little. The worst class I have taken at Vandy, and most other I know agree. AVOID THIS CLASS! Other non-major science classes will probably be much more rewarding.
This woman didn't know what was going on most of the time. Doesn't respond to e-mails and is never clear on what the assignment is. The lab was okay, only because the TA was awesome. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
I enjoyed Sulikowski's lectures, they were clear, engaging, and easy to understand. She is funny and generally pretty nice and willing to help. The tests are very, very hard though.
Lectures were easy to understand and she's definitely knows what she's talking about. Tests are very hard, however, and there is a lot of material to cover in this course. From what I've heard, sophomore orgo is much easier-they didnt even have a final- so take that instead of this class.
SHE IS WONDERFUL!! I learned more in that class than any other and enjoyed it too!! Her teaching style is amazingly well structured and she is hilarious so it is entertaining as well. The tests are hard but organic is hard so what do you expect
Funny and engaging. Her class seemed very fair for organic chemistry. Tests covered the material which she taught in class, and were difficult but straightforward. The fairest grader I have had at Vanderbilt. She did have obvious favorites, but I'd try to get her for 218 or 220.
This class is Horrible!! The absolute worst teacher I have ever had. Went way to fast and skipped large sections in lecture(although the ones she "taught" were full of errors). Test are hard and she gives no help at all. Infact she will probably belittle you if you ask her a question. She overall is a horrible teacher and her stories are NOT FUNNY!
I didn't do very well in the class, but it wasn't because she doesn't teach well. Organic is a class that involves a lot of memorization, so if you devote time to it and don't get behind you'll be okay. She's hilarious and her preprinted notes mean there is a lot less drawing of structures.
WOW. Best professor ever! Dr. Sulikowski is so amazingly organized and clear. Her tests are definitely hard, but that's because the material is difficult. She makes it as simple as she can and is very helpful. She tries to do what she can to make sure people's grades aren't too low and because she's so funny and entertaining, class is never boring!
she is over-rated. she's not that good a teacher, and belittles you when you asks questions. she's not that great. however, she tells stories in class and she's funny, i'll admit, and makes class funny.
She's excellent at presenting the material to her class. I've never had a more organized teacher, which made learning the incredibly difficult organic material that much easier. She's very unapproachable even though she seems really nice and funny during class. Overall, I liked her a lot because her teaching style was amazing.
Simply a joy to have teaching the class. She gives you notes to "fill-in" which are what you need to study for the tests. She is very clear about what you need to know and tries to help you understand the material. She also knows when the class is getting dull and stops teaching and goes on some form of hysterical rant (mostly about Skymall).
She refuses to acknowledge the book. There were times when I showed her from the book that she was wrong and she said, "I don't agree with that." Also, she gets really defensive and starts to belittle you when you ask her questions. She also thinks she's really funny.
She is awesome! If you must take orgo go with her! She knows her subject is hard, but she will never test you on anything she didn't go over and she adds fun cartoons and anecdotes to help ease the dense material of her 75-minute class. The tests are hard but fair. I'm looking forward to another semester with her!
Orgo is tough. This is definitely the most human orgo experience you can have. She is so funny and helpful. The class is still very challenging and stressful, but it could have been worse.
Although the exams are harder than the other section, she explains the material a lot better and with more clarity. Also, the class pak she made is wonderful. If you study the class pak you should have be able to make a decent grade in the class.
She's really good about keeping your interest during long, difficult lectures. She's helpful during her office hours.
She is awesome. Her class pak makes everything so much easier to understand and study. Her expectations are very reasonable and she lets you know exactly what is expected of you. Orgo is hard so there are challenging questions but she will let you know what they are beforehand. She is also very helpful in office hours.
Organic Chemistry is very difficult. Personally, I did not like her personality. However, she is the best Organic teacher. She lets you know exactly what is expected on the test, and if you memorize the mechanisms, you will be fine. Keep up with the reading and problems.
Another great semester with Michelle. See post 2 down for more info. She was just as good and even more reasonable this semester. She really wants people to do well. Go see her if you don't understand something, she will help you figure it out.
Michelle is the BEST o. chem teacher you will have here at Vandy. The class is obviously hard, but if you go to class and listen to what she says to do, you will do fine. The average in my class is a high C/low B. She actually makes o. chem understandable. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
Class was a lot more difficult than what I expected. I took organic in high school, but this is just so much more in depth. Michelle is the best teacher in this hard class. Know reactions inside and out. Especially pay attention to reagents, that's what would always get me. Michelle made the class bearable, she's a nice genuine person.
Class Pak is great but I do not like her personally. She doesn't respond to e-mails and she can be a bit arbitrary in grading. Do not rely on a curve in this class.
I think she is overrated. She can be moody and is only moderately helpful during office hours. On a positive note the class pak she uses is good but one of the tests had a class average of 61 and she still didn't curve this semester. People fought to get into her class but I'm not sure in the long run it was worth it.
This class wasn't easy, but choose her over the other professors. If you study you'll get an A.
All in all, not too bad of a professor. Michelle has her annoying quirks like giving you 10 minutes for quizzes, being annoyingly sarcastic, and bringing up random material she promised not to on tests. That said, she's very organized, makes taking notes and studying easy by giving you a wealth of optional practice. Would take again with her
The best organic professor here! Very clear and organized. Her class notes that you fill in are great. She's definitely approachable and very helpful during office hours too.
Great professor. Clear, concise, and funny. Gives class set of notes, extremely helpful. That being said, it's a difficult class- tons of material. Study hard. Quizzes and tests are fair, won't be any surprises, but you have to know the material forwards and backwards. Gives random extra credit and group quizzes, so show up.
Very funny, interesting class. Material is somewhat difficult. No explicitly assigned homework, but requires studying before tests and quizzes. Take Mrs. S over any other organic prof. She is hilarious and can relate to college students
easiest orgo professor at vandy. take her and make sure you take her for both orgo I and II. spend I getting used to her style of teaching and test questions. orgo II with her is literally orgo I with different materials; once you grasp her ways in orgo I, orgo II with her is just pure memorization- an easy A+
Remains the best orgo prof. Class pack is incredibly useful, makes it pretty easy to miss lectures and still get the content. Tests are very fair. Orgo is tough but this is the prof to take it with. Funny too.
Organic can be a tough subject, but the professor was extremely helpful. The classpack was amazing. Her section had a much higher average than the other section of the class. The high average unfortunately made it to where there was no curve. however, she will never curve down. liked this teacher so much i am signed up to take her class next year
If you forgot to study one thing, you'd better pray. That's not to say she's not a fair prof. She's very clear about what you need to know and what you need to do to succeed.
Organic Chemistry is hard, but she's your best bet for getting through it. Obviously knows the material well, and can explain it. The Class Pak helps a lot, especially since you can study almost exclusively off it. Tells interesting stories in class, but doesn't let them distract. Fairer and better than her husband, from what I've heard.
She was a lot more difficult second semester than first semester. I would suggest nearly any other professor if you're taking her for 220B, because even though she is clear, her tests require a lot more problem solving.
TAKE ORGO WITH SULIKOWSKI!! This is literally not a question, DO IT! Her lectures are incredibly clear and as long as you study her notes and do all the practice problems you'll get an A. I got A's both semesters and I took the MCAT a semester later- barely even cracked open the orgo review books. Her class is very thorough!!
Avoid! Avoid! Avoid!
Sulikowski is a good lecturer and her class pak is very organized and helpful. However, her tests are much harder compared to other orgo professors. If you are good at studying on your own and reading the book by yourself, I would suggest taking someone else for orgo because the tests will be easier than Sulikowski's.
1) Classpak was so useful. Didn't really need the textbook. 2) Her lectures were fun. She has a good sense of humor 3) Strict grading, no curve. I did well on 4 of the 5 tests, screwed up the 3rd test and that dragged my grade down to just B 4) I thought orgo was going to be boring and hard but she changed my perception 5) Do attend lectures
Sulikowski is a great lecturer and her classpakmechanism book is a huge asset. Organic is a tough class, but she gives you all the tools to succeed. Don't skip class, pay attention, work plenty of practice problems, and an A is very manageable.
Lectures are pretty clear. The difficulty of the tests comes from the difficulty of the subject more than the teacher's ability. Had to still work very hard on my own time, since there's just so much material. Sulikowski's tests weren't too bad except for the difficult final. Again, work you put in is more important than the quality of teacher.
Dr. Sulikowski is one of the better options for OChem. If you're in a lecture she won't pretend to know you, but is very helpful if you show initiative and interest. KEEP UP with your work/flashcards/theory. Tests are fine if you keep up. Go to lecture, as she is clear on what you should know for exams etc. Good lecturer, not amazing, but clear.
She's your best option. Sometimes very unclear/unorganzied, but her exams are the most straightforward.
Probably the best choice for organic chem. General wisdom says that hare gives harder tests but curves the class. Clear on what you have to know.
4 easy midterms, though a killer final to balance things out. Great lecturer with an impressive style of deadpan humor. Would recommend.
Easy to medium midterms with a very hard final but also a pretty significant curve at the end. Should get a good result if you put in some work.
The four midterms are not difficult. With good studying it's not difficult to get solid A's on them. Class is optional (the textbook covers all the content), but she fills out her notes in class which helps with organization when learning the content. The final is absurdly difficult. No getting around it, but she does curve a bit after the final.
Professor Sulikowski is a solid prof. She is super smart and a great lecturer. Difficult class though, obviously, since it's organic. 4 exams throughout the semester (seems like every other week) and a final that's cumulative. Not a bad experience with organic
Dr. Sulikowski is great! While most things are in the textbook, she brings it all together on a more basic level in class . The material might seem challenging at first, but if you read the textbook, take good notes from it, go to class and do all of the homework, the tests will be easy ( A-able). She is also extremely helpful in office hours.
Orgo is a tough course, but this professor attempts to make it seem less daunting. While attendance is not required, her lectures are very helpful for understanding the material. She gives great pointers on how to study for her exams, which only cover the important details and are not overly specific. Extremely helpful during office hours!!!
Test averages were 75ish every time, but they should have been higher. If you simply took notes in class and did the assigned homeworks, the test were easy to ace. Sometimes in lectures she makes mistakes, and she'll admit it but beware because she normally doesnt catch her mistakes unless a student points it out. She wants students to succeed
She's really nice and pretty clear about the content each exam covers. Nonetheless, orgo is still a tough class no matter what but Sulikowski is your best bet for an A. Test averages were usually in the 80s or higher and getting an A isn't extremely tough.
Pretty good choice for Orgo. She explains the material well, gives out clear notes, and explains what to know for the test. Also, your lowest exam is dropped. Due go to class though because you cannot otherwise fill out her note packets (which are more important than the book to do well)
Hated this class, makes tests way too hard to look good against other professors. The tests are basically your grade and they are a billion times harder than the practice. Dropping pre-med because of her and so many others will to.
Very caring prof. willing to meet me outside office hours. Great stories. Clear teaching, tests are difficult.
Nicest woman ever!! Highly recommend for orgo
I took Suli as a remote student and she was so responsive. Also she was very understanding and accommodating for COVID-related concerns or incidents. I think people were mad about the curve, but she didn't decide it herself (it's department policy) and in the end the average was fair.
Suli is a good choice for organic chem as her tests are the easiest. However, this is offset by higher averages so lower curves. Most of the times she is very clear about what she wnats on a test. The only downfall is that sometimes she doesn't take that extra step of effort but thats more trivial than anything.
Sulikwoski is very nice and funny during her lectures, but she doesn't know how to explain concepts and goes extremely fast to the point where you can't even copy things down and process them. Tests are easier than Hare, but still really difficult. A lot of self-studying, reading textbook on your own, and doing practice problems.
You need to show up to class every single lecture. She did randomized credit points where people had to turn in pieces of paper if and only if they showed up in class to submit it. You also need to save all your notes and attend class to take notes. Sometimes the videos online did not work, and you really had to learn from those notes. Hard Class.
No matter what you do, orgo is going to be hard. That said, Dr. Sulikowski gives you the methods to succeed in orgo. If you follow her advice on studying habits, you will do well. She is known as the orgo professor that has easier exams, but you probably won't learn as much. I like Dr. Sulikowski and I am taking her class for orgo 2
Took her for 2221 too, good choice. Grades for partial credit fairly, and is caring/understanding. Midterms are easier than Hare's + more exam time in the T/R class. 2nd semester final was hard, but she did give a few bonus points. Read the book & go to lecture bc takes attendance randomly + covers stuff not in book. Class pacing got better 2nd sem
As others have mentioned, organic chemistry is simply a difficult class. However, Dr. Sulikowski always has very clear expectations and gives you the tools you need to succeed in the course. There's a lot of outside reading and practice problems regardless of the instructor you choose, but I enjoyed the class overall and recommend it.
I took the FYWS Food Chemistry with her and I absolutely loved it. She taught us the organic chemistry of food at an understandable pace. She let us write essays on anything relating to food and brought people from the library to help us advance our writing. I am so glad I took this writing seminar I feel like I learned so much.
I had Dr. Sulikowski for both Orgo 1 and 2 and felt like she genuinely wanted me to succeed. She's transparent about what to expect on exams, the final, and the class curve. She also posts answer keys for practice tests and gives participation credit opportunities (Dr. Hare doesn't). Orgo is going to be hard but Sulikowski is the best choice.
Sulikowski is caring and very funny. Orgo is a tough class -- it's gonna be rough no matter what professor you take it with. But Sulikowski takes short breaks occasionally to tell a story to lighten the mood, and is very clear with what you should know for the exams. Exams can be very hard -- it's orgo, make sure to study.
She says the most out of pocket things during lecture that makes the class erupt in laughter. Other than that her exams are pretty easy compared to hare and she's super nice. Sad to see her leave next semester.
Sulikowski is a good lecturer but can be unforgiving at times. Her exams are definitely easier than Hare's, but they are still very difficult. Lecture won't be enough if you want to get an A. This class will take a lot of time, arguable the hardest premed class, but it is manageable if you start early and do a lot of practice.
Roses are red. Violets are blue. Sully is my queen, and she'll be urs too. Do not be scared, her tests are fine. Your confidence will incline. Funny she is, boring she's not. She goes on tangents a lot. She's better than Hare, who will put you in despair. you will lose a lot of hair. Sad she is leaving, it's having me grieving. Goodbye Sully
Sulikowski is simply ahead of her time - she is the icon, she is the moment. The most hysterical, out-of-pocket woman, and I wouldn't want it any other way. Makes me so sad that she's retiring. She deserves everything and more.
It's orgo so it's always going to be difficult. Sulikowski made it fun and hilarious. Tests seemed to be much easier than Hare's too. It really sucks that she is retiring, Vanderbilt is losing a gem.
