Her class is very interesting, however the reviews that she posts online are far from really helpful for the exams. She's a bit paranoid about people cheating and learning about exams before hand; so it makes it hard for the people who really want to learn and absorb the material to do so. However, she's a nice person. The tests are the real pain.
Seriously lacks teaching skills, tests are ridiculously hard no matter how much you study. The info isn't what is gone over or discussed in class or in some cases even the book. She does give a lot of extra credit however...which you WILL need.
I disagree with what the others have said. I really enjoyed Dr. VanDellen's class. As a psyc teacher, she tries to teach in a way that will actually help you learn. She often does interactive learning and shows video clips. You have to write a lot, and quickly during lecture, but the tests are easy if you just study what you've written.
She is definitely not the best teacher. The test are ridiculously hard no matter how much you study, because her class lectures cover about 25% of the material for the test. You will definitely need the book! When i stopped taking notes in class and only read and outlined chapters in the book, my grades improved A LOT!
She really does her best to keep class interesting. shows a lot of video clips and movie clips to help students understand. taking notes really doesn't help on the tests. you're better off just doing the practice exams and flash cards on the book's website. If you know the vocab, the tests are easy. favorite class this semester!
Tests are pretty hard. I didn't get lower than a B, but the lecture notes don't cut it. Study the book more and take your own notes. But you should still go to class because she gives a lot of extra credit points! I had 15 extra pts. on two tests, which allowed me to get 100's on two of my tests! She's very interesting. Take her.
Her test are easy if you read the book. Her lectures are more like an outline for what you need to know for the test. She gives crazy extra credit so that helps a lot. However she is really rude and sarcastic and does not like to wait for the students to take notes. You can tell taht a lot of the time she does not knwo what she is talkind about.
Dr. VanDellen is a very nice teacher. She is challenging, but keeps it interesting. I got around a B-C on all her tests, but she gives lots of extra credit. Definitely go to class. She will test you on the notes. The book is also essential. She does not count one of the tests, and there is really no final if you do well on the tests.
Get the textbook; if you read all of the chapters before the tests you'll be fine. The only point of going to class is to get extra credit. Her average was extremely low on the first test, so be prepared for difficult exams. However, she lets you drop the lowest test (including final).
Dr. vanDellen isn't the easiest 1101 professor, but this class is manageable. It is critical that you read the book and outline each chapter on your own. Her lectures will guide you, but if you do not utilize the book you will fail. She gives ample extra-credit opportunities and you even get points for attending class.
The first two or three tests were tough, but they get EXTREMELY easy toward the end. Just read the book and do the tonssss of extra credit she gives out and you'll easily make an A. I ended up having over a 100 in the class and hardly actually attended class. You'll be fine as long as you read!
This class was extremely interesting. It is not the easiest class ive ever been it but it is fun. dr. vandellen is a great teacher. she makes coming to class fun. Her test are not hard if you come to class and read the book. on top of that she gives out a lot of extra credit so its hard to fail or even not get an A. Overall good class.
This class was very interesting and didn't take too much to get a good grade in. She gives you SOOO MUCH EXTRA CREDIT! She not only has days where you can get extra credit for just being there but assignment stuff as well. Her lectures are right from the book, so if you go to class you only need to review her notes for tests. I really recommend!
I though she was a good teacher. She gives a lot of examples which are really helpful for remembering the information. She also gives a TON of extra credit!
Mrs. vanDellen is AWESOME. She makes her class, though not mandatory, interesting. She also gives a TON OF EXTRA CREDIT that could possibly boost your grade a whole letter. Going to class can also earn you extra credit. She uses great examples and YouTube videos. The best way to get the stuff on the test is to memorize the bold words in the text.
Such a nice teacher!! She shows you clips of movies and tv shows (like harry potter & the office) and her class is very entertaining. tests are straightforward and she gives SOOOOO much extra credit! impossible to not get an A! and the final is optional :) I really enjoyed this class & learned a lot.
LOVED this class. Once I figured out how to study (5 MC tests, so study for RECOGNITION not Recall), I was fine. You don't HAVE to go to class, but lectures are usually fun. I recommend getting your experiment hours over with at the beginning so you can do extra credit at the end. And don't forget to turn off your cellphone before class!
Interesting professor! Go to class and you get extra points :)
An enjoyable class and an easy A. Her lectures are sometimes boring but she tries very hard to make it fun and interesting with some success. Specifically I love that even in a class of 100 she still remembered my name. Her extra credit asks you about your own experiences, which is great. I learned a lot in her class and it wasn't a pain at all.
This class was definitely worth taking for my core credit. Easy A coupled with interesting enough information and presentation. Don't take notes. Just listen to her. Scan the book for the bold and italicized words before the test and you'll be fine.
Dr. Vandellen is great! I had her honors class last semester and it was a really good class. It is not stressful at all if you do the reading. I only had trouble with one of the tests, but that was probably my own fault. Take this class- you can get an A and still learn a lot about psyc! Plus you get to watch movies in class which is always good!
She's awesome--i took her honors class and totally recommend it. the class itself involves a lot of self-teaching but is fun and entertaining while still promoting actual learning. you should get an A if you do your work...
Dr. Vandellen is a great teacher! She gives us homework that is helpful and group assigments so that by the time the test comes around we are prepared. The material is tough but she does a great job helping us understand it.
She really enjoys statistics and tries to stick to the basics because she knows not everyone does. Provides homework and group activities that are same as the tests while still making you think. Great class and great teacher. Extremely helpful and her notes are straightforward for what you need to know. Formulas provided on tests.
She's a nice lady but I did not enjoy this class at all. There were several times that HW problems would cover material we may not have learned yet because she wanted to see if we could figure it out on our own. That's fine if it is a class that is interesting but in statistics it's annoying.
A great class, one of my favorite professors!
Awesome, awesome, awesome! She realizes that most people don't like statistics, and really tries to make it bearable and interesting. Notes and tests are straight forward. Definitely take her class!
Awesome professor. She's not too hard, just read the chapters for the RAMs and you'll do fine. Not much outside of class work. Great person. I would recommend the class, and her, anyday.
She's a really great teacher. I was used to lecture classes and was kind of annoyed at first because that's what I was used to, but she really made the psychology topics easy to understand with her style of teaching. She's really funny too. Not rude and sarcastic at all. : )
She was AWESOME! I recommend taking her. This was the first psych class I've ever taken, but she made it so interesting that I will be taking more. At first I thought the RAMS (pretty much tests) took me a while to get used to, and I did horrible on the first, but for the following ones i studied harder & did well. A lot of extra credit!! Take her!
She is literally the best professor I have had at the University of Georgia. She took a class that isn't necessarily interesting and made it manageable. I didn't even buy the text book. Her notes are enough if you go to class, take notes and do the homework. She is also totally willing to help you out if you don't understand something. AWESOME!!
She never follows her notes pages... it's kind of hard to follow math if you don't write it down and she almost never writes her lecture down onto the overhead. It's frustrating! She was often disorganized and ditzy... A really nice person but I wouldn't take her again for a statistics class.
She was the best teacher I could imagine for a stat class! I have never taken stat before, I didn't buy the book and I didn't use her note pages. I just went to every class, paid attention and took notes and made over a 100 on each test. She makes everything make sense. The lab is useless but not hard.
Very nice and knowledgeable. Her grading scale is awful and can be a rude awakening at the end of the semester. 91.5 final average equated to a B+. She attempts to get to know everybody?s name. Never opened the book. Go to class and take notes and you?ll be fine.
An "A" in this class is like a 95 and up i believe BUT it's an easy class! I asked her questions during an exam cuz my calculations were so weird, and she would hint to me like "why is THAT number so high?" which not a lot of prof do! super funny and very sweet! tests are almost the same as notes! EASY A!
No attendance, but she WILL know if you aren't showing up to class, especially since your grade will reflect it without her having to do anything. There are plenty of grades to ensure that your final grade ends up being what you really deserve! Vandellen was super helpful and very sweet as a person! Would recommend taking her section of the class!
I thoroughly enjoyed her class. She doesn't have PowerPoints, so you can't refer back to them, but she does have notes that you can print out and fill in while she lectures. She also repeats herself (be sure to ask if she doesn't!) and encourages students to ask questions. She's quirky. Definitely would recommend for anyone who stuggles with math.
DO NOT take her if you don't want a career in psych. She talks extremely fast & rarely repeats what she says. She also doesn't post power points & brags about graduating from Duke even though her only published book is online. It costs $60 & is merely a collection of poorly written notes. Her grading scale is awful and even an 81.99 is a C+. No.
Well, Dr. Vandellen is overall a good professor. She gives help when you ask. Beware: She can be very moody and has a lot of attitude. And she is obsessed with the fact that she graduated from Duke. I got an A- in the class, because her grading scale includes a 94 as an A- for some crazy reason. Don't take her if you are easily offended.
Dr. Vandellen is clear and will repeat herself if you don't catch something. No textbook required and no attendance grade. If you go to lecture, you'll do very well. She does have a harsh grading scale (95 an A). But she makes statistics very easy to understand, which is not something I have experienced with any other instructor. Take her class!
She was wonderful! Made a sort of dry subject less dry. She's got a witty sense of humor and I loved it. She gives extra credit for attendance checks. Tests were pretty easy. Always made sure everyone understood things they were confused about. Willing to help students in any way she can!
Easy tests and lets you ask questions and actually helps you during them. Wants everyone to get a 100
Dr. Vandellen is awesome! She really enjoys teaching the class and she's very helpful. She teaches w/o powerpoints, so you want to make sure you listen. But she has review sessions before tests, and her website has a textbook and tons of practice problems. She also gives random in-class extra credit that helps you practice and adds points to tests
This class was just a seminar, so it was more informal than a lecture, but it was definitely enjoyable. Professor Vandellen is very kind and funny and tries to relate to the students. Low amount of work. Would definitely recommend!
great professor! Really helps you if you don't understand. Attendance isn't Necessary but if you went to class paid attention and did her practice problems your chances at getting an A are pretty high. She makes learning statistics not be so much of a burden.
She's fantastic. Really tries to know everyone's name despite the class being so large. She's funny, quirky, and smart. She doesn't use powerpoints and just jots things down on the document camera occasionally, so make sure you pay attention and take notes. She'll gladly repeat or rephrase anything you need though.
Dr. Vandellen is a great teacher, always willing to repeat herself, and answer any questions you may have. Tried her hardest to learn all the names even though our lecture was 200 people. Offers extra credit in the form of "group checks." Super easy class if you pay attention. I wouldn't recommend skipping class as you will miss a lot of material.
Never went to class and still got a B. She doesn't assign homework which is awesome. Random groups check assignments for EC. She was very nice. Probs an easy A if u go to class
I seriously LOVE Dr. Vandellen. She is SO nice, funny, and passionate about her field. She understands that not all Psych majors like statistics, so she teaches everything on a 'need-to-know' basis. The tests are VERY straightforward, and the online textbook that SHE WROTE is seriously BAE. It comes with great practice problems and few readings.
Dr. Vandellen is one of the best professors in the psychology department. There is no homework and attendance is not mandatory. However, I highly recommend attending class because her entire test is based on lecture. She understands that not everyone understands statistics and will be happy to repeat herself if something is unclear. TAKE HER!!!
Dr. Vandellen is the BEST! Take her class every chance you get! She is very clear in teaching concepts and is super helpful. She is the best professor I have had at UGA. She truly cares about her students and takes the time to help every individual. She goes above and beyond. She also teaches PSYC 5100 and it was awesome too!
Not as great as everyone makes her out to be. If you don't buy the online textbook and do the practice tests then making a good grade on her exams are pretty hard. Labs are terrible.
Dr. Vandellen is a great professor. I am so glad I took her. You will need to buy the online textbook to get her printable notes (super helpful fill in the blank) and practice tests (which are so similar to exams) but it isn't that expensive and is totally worth it. She explains the material super easy and clear. I am taking her again!
Loved having her. She teaches potentially complex stat and makes it super easy to follow. Beware, during the mc part of exams, READ EACH LETTER, because a slight change will change the answer. She's so nice, great at explainaing, gives ec. The lab with the class isn't super interesting. The class just has a positive vibe, and it's because of her
Super easy class. You don't have to be good at math, and especially easy if you've already taken stats (which I think is a pre-req anyway). Dr. Vandellen was a great prof, easy going, and a great person to consider doing psych research with if that's something you're interested in.
basically an online class, its so nice! the lectures are online and thus a lot of class days are optional. tests are taken in lab time and there are 6, the final can replace two of these. but the info is basic statistics so you should do great! she is so nice and always there to answer questions.
She was such an awesome professor! Has in class lectures for anyone who needs extra help but they are not required unless it is a day where you have to do a project with your group. She makes videos that make learning the class so easy.
I enjoyed her class. She seemed invested in her student and tried hard to remember everyone by name. She respects you and goes the extra mile to help. The class is not hard
Professor Vandellen is awesome, funny, and made stats easy. It's a flipped classroom where you do the problems on your own and ask questions in class (though many classes are not mandatory!). This means that if you get the material she does not waste your time and if you don't there are opportunities to ask questions.
Take Dr. vanDellen!! The content of this course could be difficult at times, but she really worked to make sure we understood. She offered extra credit and had an optional final exam. She really cares about her students & wants her students to succeed - a quality you don't find in teacher's often.
I was so worried when I found out this course was a short session 1 course. However, Dr. Vandellen really cared for her students and made this class a lot easier! Her lectures are clear and weren't super long. She taught a great four step system, and the exams are VERY similar to the homework. Final is optional and replaces the lowest test grade!
Dr. vanDellen was my professor for my FYOS. Amazing woman and very sociable. Weekly readings followed by discussions. As long as you talk during the discussion, you receive an A. She genuinely cares about her students and is a good resource at UGA. An amazing person to cross paths with during your time here.
You basically have to teach yourself in this class. There are 6 tests that are about 20 questions each. Final is optional but will replace two lowest test scores. She says at the beginning of the semester she does not reply well to emails so your best bet is to talk to her in person. Pretty easy, just be prepared for statistics problems.
She is always unavailable. She is rarely reachable through email and has an unprofessional attitude towards her students. She is extremely rude and her class is a little difficult because content and exams are not completely similar. She tends to go really easy on the homework but the exams are the complete opposite.I would not recommend her class.
Easy class with fair grading. The professor was extremely inaccessible outside of class, sending MANY emails about how she didn't want to be contacted or have office hours. Content was clear, but she is extremely unprofessional and honestly disrespectful of students. Inflated ego maybe?
While her guidelines are clear, this professor acts as if she is the only person of importance in the world. She is not understanding, unhelpful, and dismissive. Also, what do you gain from not bumping a grade ending in .99 to the next grade up. She may benefit from a classroom etiquette class
Just no. She does not care about you as a student. She threw a hissy fit because someone called her Mrs. She literally laughed at questions and deleted students' emails because your heinous had "better things to do". She said UGA forced her to teach this class. What a waste of a spot I hope another professor gets her spot who actually cares
Dr. Vandellen was great. She made difficult material much simpler. If you have a question, the best way to reach her is by going to class and asking in person. She is sassy but it's not in a rude way. I will say, what she says is what she says. She also makes an effort to know her students, which i found sweet. i definitely recommend her.
Easy class but terrible professor she is super rude and condescending she does not care about students. She acts like we should be blessed with her presence or something. I advise just never coming to class her videos explain what you need to know and its not worth hearing her attitude for an hour straight.
Dr. Vandellen was a really great professor. She teaches in a flipped-classroom format which means she has online videos you watch to learn the content and you come into class and ask questions and review. She is VERY helpful if you come into class and ask questions and even comes early and stays late so she can answer everyone.
I have very mixed feelings about this professor. She can be very rude at times by stating that she doesn't appreciate emails asking questions about her class (any kinds of questions). There are weekly test where she uploads her videos and her class times were sometimes a "get to know her" instead of the material. And the lab was TERRIBLE. Good luck
Class is easy. You teach yourself entirely and tbh her actual class periods aren't helpful ( honestly should've stopped attending). But she is self centered and should probably look to her own field on how to fix a ridiculously high ego. She will try and learn your name, but actually, she doesn't care about you at all. Unavailable and indifferent
Rude little lady. All I can say. Enjoy.
Dr. V was a fun lecturer and I enjoyed going to her classes. She made an effort to know students by name. She posted Zoom recordings of every class, online video lectures and textbook material; classes were optional. Dr. V was extremely approachable, even if she seemed cold at times (think tough love). Tough material, but she would definitely help
Her class is by no means easy especially if you take it online and a lot of people struggled with her since she kinda expected you to learn Rstudio by yourself but tbh I hate math and always will but I got a 94 in her class. She always is willing to help and does a really good job at connecting to her students but you do have to reach out to her.
She doesn't actually teach in her lectures so you pretty much have to teach yourself throughout the entire class. It is essentially another STAT class. She mostly relies on her TAs for the lab sections. Also kind of rude as a person and doesn't like to discuss questions unless you go to her in person. Does not allow make up tests for any reason.
if you want to teach yourself, take this course.
Almost 40% of grade is the coding lab. You work with your assigned group to get it done and it's not that hard. Tests are around 60% of your grade, and there are 5 of them. They are just like the practice problems. You learn all the class content on your own through videos, and it's math heavy. Coming to class is pointless she just goes over labs.
Has tests every two-is weeks. She's not a tough teacher, and most of your grades are from the lab. Her teaching isn't the best though. She always talks about how she's a researcher and not a teacher. She uses class time to show us stuff we were going to do in lab anyways. If you're good at stats this is a good class for you.
This class is pretty straightforward and easy to get an A as long as you actually put in effort to learn and practice the material. I didn't go to class after the first couple of weeks, but I watched all of the lecture videos and took notes, and I did all of the practice problems. I reviewed notes and problems before exams and was well prepared!
Flipped classroom, so coming to class was worthless. 40% of grade was groupwork w/ randomly assigned groups, that killed my grade. Not a hard class content-wise, but expect a ton of statistics and going over videos. She has a class email specially set up, so you can't email her at her actual email. One of the most disagreeable profs I've had.
Dr. Vandellen was great! Dr. Vandellen made it a priority to learn your name which I liked. The class is a "flipped classroom" meaning you are expected to learn the information outside of class. She attached short chapters to read along with a pre-recorded practice problem. If you are good at math/stats, this class will be very easy.
Dr. VanDellen was super nice and cares a lot about her students; the 30 out of 200 that regularly came to class probably agree. Test questions were very similar to the problem sets and labs weren't that bad. Take her!
Going to class was pointless because she didn't lecture about the material. You had to read a textbook that she wrote and watch videos and teach yourself. If you're good at math, it wasn't really difficult just annoying. The lab is a major part of your grade, but wasn't hard. She made it very clear that she is a researcher and not a teacher.
This class was not how it was outlined in Athena. Dr. Vandellen made it very clear she was a super smart researcher and that she was doing us a favor by "teaching" us. It was a flipped classroom, but not hard material. Additionally, the lab is all coding using R-Studio, which was insanely difficult and hard.
Vandellan is quite egotistical. She doesn't accept emails, answer questions, and makes sure you know how lucky you are to be taught by her. Otherwise, her online material was easy to follow and she makes EXCELLENT videos teaching the material. The tests are straightforward and the lab is easy.
Dr. V is one of my favorite professors I've had at UGA. Her tests contain red herrings which suck if you're barely hanging on, so make sure you know the logic inside and out. However, I interpreted this as her not patronizing us and pushing to make us strong future psychologists. She worked with me when I needed it and was approachable and kind.
Easy FYO. All discussion based. You lead 2 discussions during the class which is most of your grade (pretty easy just read something and come up with stuff to talk about/questions to ask). You have to write a reflection at the end but I think she gives everyone a hundred. She's willing to talk about/help with anything UGA, even unrelated to class.
While her lecture videos are very helpful, Dr. Vandellen lacks empathy. She doesn't answer questions directly saying,"you should have the confidence to answer ur own questions".The tests are straightforward and based on the practice problems. The labs are HELL if you don't understand the coding. If you struggle with stats,I don't take it for Maymester
Okay the other responses below mines are very true, no groupme's & she does answer questions like that. It's not that she lacks empathy, but she genuinely wants you to adapt some critical thinking skills. She has office hours which DEFINITELY helped. (It's a maymaster)You have to put a lot of study time into it, but she's a great teacher seriously.
Class was fine but she was pretty rude. Needs to learn there's a right way to talk to students.
